East Lake Park to add RV campground By HILARY FERRAND
OST news editor hferrand@osceolaiowa.com
“Camping’s kind of the ‘in’ thing right now,” said Clarke County Conservation Board Executive Director Scott Kent. Since taking over in February 2016, Kent has made some big waves at East Lake Park. With help from Elizabeth Simpson, program manager at the Clarke County Development Corporation (CCDC), Kent has applied for more than $1 million in grants. The effort is paying off with many upcoming improvements covered almost entirely by approved grant funds. Projects include a 25-site RV campground at the park with full water and electricity hookups, dumping station and shower house. “There was a lot of
thought that went into the design of the campground as far as the convenience of pulling in, backing in, individual hookups. We went into a lot of detail on that, trying to make it as nice as we could,” said Kent. The campground road will wind north around the Prairie shelter. Nine pullin sites and 16 back-in sites will branch off the path. “We looked at several around and got a lot of feedback from local RV campers and what they wanted,” said Kent. “For instance, a lot of your older campsites only had up to 30 amp hookups and with today’s bigger RV systems they’re requiring 50 amp, so our boxes will have a 20, 30 and 50 breaker box they can hook into.” In the future, buddy sites — areas where four or five RVs can camp together — and a bathroom with a
shower house will be added. “With the shower house, we’ll have to put in a wetland sanitation system. That would also allow us to have a dump station for the RVs,”
he said. “Eventually, there will be a loop that goes into the trees for primitive camping — basically, tent camping, sleeping bags, whatever people want to use.”
It’s a long-awaited development for people in the area who enjoy spending time in the Great Outdoors. “Right now, there’s not a campground in Clarke
Diehl honored to receive community service award
By HILARY FERRAND
Living a life of service doesn’t result in many thanks. Tuesday night was an exception for one outstanding Osceola volunteer. Ann Diehl received the 2017 Community Service Award at the Osceola Chamber Main Street and Clarke County Development Corporation annual dinner Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Lakeside Hotel and Casino. “A lot of things are being explained now that I didn’t understand,” said a surprised Diehl, who’d noticed unexpected friends and family in the crowd. “Thank you all so much.” Diehl’s record of service goes back more than four decades. She was on the Clarke Community School Board for nine years, serv-

She’s served on numerous committees, written grants and campaigned for improvements all over Clarke County. “I honestly can’t think of anyone who deserves this more than Ann Diehl,” said Chuck DeVos, event emcee and lead pastor of LifePoint Church. He’s not the only one who thinks so. In 2007, Diehl received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. Together with her husband, the late Fred Diehl, Ann was recognized for her efforts in restoring the Osceola Train Depot last year. “I love Osceola. I was born and raised here, and I came back,” said Diehl, “and I’m glad I did.”

County that’s in a park area,” said Kent. “There’s been such a demand from local people. They want to be able to go camping and then run home and take a shower — or run home and check their livestock. They want somewhere close to home.” How soon they will get it is another matter. The first phase of development is set to begin this spring. “Our goal this year is to get all the roads in, the electrical and the water — the infrastructure,” said Kent. In the meantime, two Osceola Eagle Scouts will be making their own marks on the park. Through their efforts, the park will gain a new soccer field and a refurbished basketball court. More information on those improvements can be found in next week’s edition of the Osceola Sentinel-Tribune.

West Lake is a popular spot for ice fishing, but this weekend there will be crowds on surface like Osceola has never seen. When Cody Mundy started the West Lake Ice Out ice fishing tournament four years ago, he had no idea it would become as popular as it is. “It’s the second-largest in the state,” said his dad, Charlie Mundy. A quick look at the list of door prizes and giveaways makes it easy to tell why it’s so popular. Cody Mundy estimates between 150-200 two-person teams show up on the
ice 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 29. The estimated payout for first place is $1,500, and that’s based on 100 entries. If all goes as planned, first prize could be twice that. However, that’s not the only thing people look forward to winning. “This year we have lots of safety equipment,” said Mundy, but door prizes also include reels, warming shoe inserts and other fishing supplies. “Everybody goes home with door prizes,” said Mundy, stressing he tries to make the $75 entry fee per team worth the expense. “We have the banquet, so we’re feeding them an extra meal. entered Hunter. He was hooked.” The Davis and Diawara brothers also got started by following in family footsteps. “I used to high school rodeo along with my sister,” said their mom, Michelle Diawara. “Trey went to the Junior High Nationals Finals in New Mexico for two years. Josiah started at the Clarke County Youth Rodeos at age 2.” Equipment costs and travel are a major investment, and practice sessions are arduous. Still, it’s a sport that teaches children how to stay focused and persistent, even when the going gets tough.
