Friday, Jan. 20, Donald John Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. His pathway to the presidency surprised most Americans. The 70-year-old father of five is the oldest man to take his place in the Oval Office, and he is by far the wealthiest, with an estimated net worth of $3.7 billion. Trump rallied the blue-collar vote by promoting a vision of prosperity — creating 25 million new jobs for Americans, lowering the national debt and reducing taxes across the board. In the 2016 Presidential race, Trump initially had little support, but went on to beat out 16 Republican

Kelsey Haltom, 9, daughter of Brian and Regina Haltom of Osceola, won first place in the seventh annual “MLK Call 2 Serve” essay contest at the city and state level. Haltom is a student in Mrs. Olson’s 4A class at Clarke Community Elementary School. “When Mrs. Keiger and Mrs. Lampe shared that with me, they were extremely excited,” said Clarke Community Schools Super-
intendent Steve Seid during a presentation at last week’s school board meeting. The essay contest asks children how they can live by Martin Luther King Jr.’s example in one of the following seven ways: courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service. The contest is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Office on Status of African-Americans and the State of Iowa Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee. “She wrote about service she does,” said Haltom’s mother, Regina, which

Clinton retained popularity among the people, but it wasn’t enough to win the election. Trump received 304 electoral votes to Clinton’s 227, though just 62,979,879 popular votes to Clinton’s 65,844,954. In Clarke County, Trump was the candidate of choice with 2,706 votes to Clinton’s 1,463. Having served as the Clarke County Republican Central Committee Chairman for more than a dozen years, Ray Negler considered this one of the most polarizing elections he’s seen.

The $29 million, 63,000 square-foot hospital expansion, which concluded in May 2016, transformed Clarke County Hospital from a traditional smalltown hospital to a fully modernized medical center. The new emergency department opened in November, and 3D mammogram equipment was unveiled in January. Opportunities for advanced care in Osceola continue to grow, including where practitioners are concerned. “We’re doing a lot from a physician standpoint because they’re keeping busy here,” said Brian Evans at a recent meeting for the Clarke County Development Corporation. “With the expansion we’ve had, we’re filling it up,” said Evans. “Actually, we’re looking into our old space for more practitioner space.” Potential plans include adding more specialists and specialty projects, such as the pain management clinic discussed as of late. “On the pain management clinic, we are doing some initial investigation and research on the opportunity of offering a pain management clinic at CCH. This is just research right now,” said Redmond, “nothing concrete.” Evans offered a heartfelt thanks to the CCDC during the meeting as well. “We want to recognize the Clarke County Development Corporation for their support in providing the matching grant that allowed us to afford to do our expansion project,”
