If a person has made plans for their family members if anything should happen to them, shouldn’t the same sentiment apply to their beloved pets? For Joy Durham, manager of Clarke County Animal Shelter, one of her goals is to have people realize the importance of advance planning or placement for pets. Durham said, last year, the animal shelter got four calls between Clarke, Decatur and Ringgold counties of older people who had lived on farms and were moving to nursing homes or in with relatives. They had many outdoor dogs and cats and no plan in place. “Like, literally, two of them, there was 135 cats in one and 85 cats in another call,” she said. Make arrangements This enforced Durham’s beliefs that family members

should make arrangements well in advance for their elderly relative’s pets. “Because the calls I got were, ‘They’re leaving the property on Friday and we need to have the animals gone by Monday,’” she said. “ … I know sometimes tragic things happen. Darlene Oliver likes to meet new people through her business Darlene’s Delights and Variety Store, especially since she was born and raised in Des Moines. “This is all new to me — small town, living in the country. And, moving here, they’re just so friendly here,” she said. “It’s a huge difference from Des Moines to here, and I love to interact with other people. I’m getting to know people through the store, so that’s a plus for me.” Darlene’s Delights and Variety Store actually came to be through conversations she had with her husband. Oliver also runs a silk-screening business, and didn’t have anything to do during the day. One day, she was sitting at her home with her husband and talked about how she’s always wanted to open a variety store. Your New Store Front That began the process of finding a building for a business location in Osceola, which led to Osceola Chamber Main Street’s (OCMS) “Your New Store Front.” OCMS received a $5,000 business innovation grant from Main Street Iowa in 2014 and is using it to set up a short-term leasing website. The website is called www. yournewstorefront.com. “We did it primarily for business expansion,” Derek Lumsden, OCMS executive

director, said earlier in the spring. “If someone wanted to try something new, and they weren’t sure if it was going to take off.” Oliver started out small in a location on the west side of the square in March. She moved to her current location later in the spring. Her store is located on East Washington Street between the offices of Clarke County Publishing and OCMS and Clarke County Development Corporation. “We moved over here and it’s been really great,” Oliver said.
