Clarke schools to work with superintendent search firm By BAILEY POOLMAN

Clarke Community School Board passed a motion to use search firm McPherson and Jacobson for only certain aspects of the superintendent search during a board workshop March 17. Clarke Community Schools Superintendent Benita Gonzales turned in her resignation at a regularly scheduled school board meeting Feb. 24, which was then approved by board members.

Gonzales’ last day is June 30. Workshop During the workshop, board members discussed which facets of the superintendent search they wanted to conduct themselves, and which they wanted McPherson and Jacobson to conduct. “They brought us, like, sample questions, told us legal and illegal questions, helped with the groups that way (during the last search),” said Ruth White, Clarke’s board secretary. It was decided McPherson and Jacobson would conduct back-

ground and reference checks on the applicants, while board members will direct the rest of the search. “I don’t think we need them (McPherson and Jacobson) as in-depth as we did before,” said Clarke Community School board member Kelly Bailey. “We just did it. I think we learned a lot from them. I don’t feel like we need them here each and every step like last time.” Another big change for applicants is less groups to conduct interviews.

“We had a variety of groups at that time, and I’ve heard some comments back about that, too,” said Clarke Community School Board President Gerard Linskens. “Basically, seven groups interviewing the superintendent candidates.” The seven groups were made up of different group aspects of the community, such as teachers, students and community members. Now, the seven groups are three: community, made up of community members; school, consisting of teachers, administration and stu-

A night of stars Glazebrook shares story of winning free trip to Academy Awards red carpet It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. That was what Kim Glazebrook of Osceola, originally of Chariton, was offered when she won a free trip for her and a guest to see the Academy Awards red carpet. “I just wanted to go. I’ve had a thing about stars,” Glazebrook said. Glazebrook gets People magazine in the mail, and every week there is a “treat of the week.” She said she sometimes wins little prizes like bottles of shampoo. However, there are big prizes like a trip to Los Angeles for the Academy Awards. “I just do it every week,” Glazebrook said. “All I do is click a button and you’re entered. So, why not do it?” Experience Glazebrook took her son Justin Paige with her to Los Angeles. They got to sit in the bleachers all day and watch the Hollywood stars arrive. They received breakfast lunch and dinner, as well as a gift bag, which contained Pantene products, facial products, body wash, snack bars, a People

cup with a straw and lid and shirts that have “Oscars” written on them. Places were also set up for hair, makeup and massages. While Glazebrook and her son couldn’t go inside the Academy Awards for the actual show, they went into a theater for a viewing party with the ceremony on a big screen. The Academy Awards were March 2, and Glazebrook found out she had

won the trip Jan. 27. “It was a lot you had to go through,” she said. “They had to do a background check. You couldn’t have any felonies, any warrants … they had tight security.” The picture on Glazebrook’s credential badge for the event is a passport photo. The stars Glazebrook said she saw just about everybody walk in, however, her favorite

stars were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. “They were the last ones to walk in,” she said. “There were five sets of bleachers and we were right in the middle. And, we were in a good spot.” Glazebrook said she and her son were in the bleachers right behind Robin Roberts of Good Morning America. Please see OSCARS, Page 4

During Osceola City Council’s regularly scheduled meeting March 18, several projects were discussed and continued. Council members passed motions to continue with the branding project and downtown cityscape projects. Branding project Osceola City Council held a public meeting to openly discuss the next step in creating a consistent city logo. The next step is to create a committee to do more research for the project and present the information to the board. “The idea now is that we’ll go back into committee form and begin doing the actual groundwork on this project, and then bounce it back to a public meeting,” said Ty Wheeler, Wheeler city administrator/clerk. “So, there will be a series of public meetings, and then committee meetings where we’ll begin to develop the concepts.” During the meeting, Bill Trickey, executive director of Clarke County Development Corporation, put forth $6,475, half the amount of the project, in the form of a check from the development corporation toward the branding project. “Some, or all, of this was to present a kind of unified image and unified front for a lot of things, including things like industrial recruitment and looking at how you approach housing development,” said Osceola City Council Chairman Dr. George Fotiadis. “If nothing else, I’d even argue approaching the state or federal government in terms of even grant appli-

cations, that kind of a unified front. This is who we are.” Council members motioned to accept the money and continue with the project. “We don’t want anyone to think we’re jumping into this quick. We’re not,” said Councilman Dan Hooper. “Our next meeting is April 24, so there’s a good time lapse in between this meeting and the next meeting.” More work will have been done on the logo before the next meeting in April. “We’ve got a lot of things and ideas right now,” Wheeler said. “Consistency is the key in a brand, and you look at any good brand and you recognize it immediately. That’s what we’re trying to do.” Downtown streetscape project More discussion was made on the downtown streetscape project, which came about after a light pole fell on West Jefferson Street, causing damage to a vehicle and bringing down Christmas lights and power lines. The council voted to establish a committee to do research and create options for the council members to look at. According to Wheeler, officials with Veenstra Please see CITY PROJECTS, Page 4
