Warmolts established first hospital in Oregon Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in Oregon’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is part of a series of the articles he has written. By Otto Dick The 1942 Oregon Reporter newspaper announced “Oregon’s New Hospital Now Enters Service. The hospital was located north of the Catholic Church at 305 N. Fourth Street. This 109 by 72 feet building faced with white brick was designed by architect Willis Hubbard, Rockford, and the builder was Charles Mongan, Oregon. The open house coincided with the National Hospital Day. “Through this day, visitors passed through the corridors and the service room, surgical, research, sterilizing, obstetrics, nursery and invalid wards, nurses’ lounge, attractive reception room, doctors’ office quarters and other completed appointed

departments, of a modernly perfect hospital. (May 6, 1942 Oregon Reporter) I enjoy their wording in the older newspapers. Warmolt’s Clinic operated for 26 years before closing in 1969. Dr. Lambertus Warmolts, an Oregon High School graduate, opened his first hospital in 1923, shortly after his graduation from medical school. This was a home, which that he remodeled into a hospital, located just south of the Oregon Golf Course overlooking Rock River. Warmolts’ second clinic was located on the corner of Washington and Third Street. This facility included his

office and a 13 bed hospital with an operating room. He attempted to organize doctors of Byron, Mt. Morris, Oregon, and Chana to build a combined hospital; however, this attempt failed. He then purchased the property owned by St. Mary’s Catholic Church for his clinic. With the help of Dr. Kloster and visiting several small hospitals, he planned the layout for his new clinic. His plans included the centralized reception area with a pool located in the center of the room. There were seven private rooms and two four-bed wards with an obstetrics and nursing ward.

The following occurred in Dr. Warmolt’s three facilities. His first patient at his home converted into a hospital was a baby with her the mother lying on a camp cot for the delivery. My wife, Marilyn, was delivered at his second hospital located on the second floor on East Washington Street. It’s hard to imagine climbing a long set of stairs to see Dr. Warmolts or enter his hospital. After Marilyn graduated from Northern Illinois University in their first B.S. Nursing Degree Program
