The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reminding residents of Jo Daviess and Carroll counties that a black bear has been observed by multiple landowners over the past several weeks in the vicinity of Mississippi Palisades State Park and in recent days frequenting private residences south and east of Galena.
Seeing a bear may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and their presence should not necessarily be perceived as a threat to human safety. Nevertheless, it’s important to remember bears are wild animals and should be treated as such.
Lincoln to be topic at July 20 presentation in Morrison
Ron Koehn of Fulton returns to Morrison’s Heritage Museum on Sunday, July 20, to present a program about Abraham Lincoln and his presidency (1861-65).
Koehn will emphasize the qualities and attributes that served Lincoln well as president.
The IDNR encourages residents throughout Jo Daviess and Carroll counties to avoid direct encounters with this bear and to check their property for food sources that may attract it to their residence. Through learned behavior, bears often investigate anything that may yield a food reward such as bird feeders, barbeque grills, garbage cans and dog food. Once a bear finds a food source, it likely will return, so prevention is key.
Human conflicts with bears can be prevented by following these Bear Wise basics and by using the BearWise checklist:
• Never feed or approach bears.
• Secure food, garbage and recycling.
• Remove bird feeders where bears
While taking undergraduate college studies, Koehn came to realize that Lincoln stands out as a premier U.S. president. The program will

• Avoid leaving pet food outdoors.
• Thoroughly clean and store grills and smokers after each use.
• Alert neighbors to bear activity. People who encounter this bear should give it sufficient space while backing away slowly and quietly. If encounters with this animal persist after cleaning up food sources, contact Chris Jacques, the IDNR’s large carnivore program manager, at chris. jacques@illinois.gov or an IDNR District wildlife biologist for advice.

See how wheat is harvested and how it ends up as freshly baked bread
By EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com
If the daily grind of modern-day living is wearing you down, the Bos Brothers’ Old Fashioned Threshing Bee may be the elixir to help you catch your breath, step back in time and experience “field to table” firsthand.
Antique farm machinery in a spectrum of colors and styles will descend again on the Bos Brothers Historical Farm, located on Springhill Road south of Erie, for the 10th anniversary show Friday, Saturday and Sunday,July 25-27. Show hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
The Old Fashioned Threshing Bee will give visitors a glimpse of how farmers harvested wheat before automated, air-conditioned combines with global positioning navigation arrived.
Visitors also can view demonstrations that show how some agricultural-related skills were done before automation – all for free.
“We will be focusing on harvesting wheat and processing it to the final step – homemade wheat bread,” Katie Lewis said. “We will also have other activities going on throughout the weekend.”
Those activities include hand quilting, pottery throwing, rug weaving, crochet demonstrations, macrame demonstrations, basket weaving, wheat weaving, wood turning, broom making, blacksmithing, pinning and treddle sewing.
Other demonstrations include plowing by hand, a sawmill operation, a working shingle mill, a rock and lime crusher, and, of course, threshing.
Modern harvesting involves the use of a combine harvester that reaps, threshes and winnows – separates the chaff from the grain – all in one machine.
Visitors to the show will get to see both methods.
“We will be harvesting wheat all three days,” Lewis said. “We will be combining some of the wheat field. The wheat we don’t combine will go to the threshing machine, then to the flour mill and then to the cook shack to make wheat bread.”
Lewis is the daughter of Chuck Bos who with his brother Kevin, started the
harvest shows in 2016. The family has been busy planning, scheduling and organizing this year’s show – a task that Lewis and her family embrace more as a “labor of love.”
The Bos farm family alternates its harvest show with its threshing show on odd and even years. Last year’s show concentrated on corn.
“It’s a lot of work, but we really love it,” Lewis said. “We enjoy seeing the people outside, getting to see new things and seeing where their food comes from. We love to see people come to the show and slow down.”
There is no admission fee.
“We run off of donations and sponsorships,” Lewis said.
To help cover the costs of the show, visitors can deposit donations in milk cans located on the showgrounds or stop by the registration barn.
“We have a wonderful group of people demonstrating for us,” Lewis said. “It makes for a fun weekend.”
Here’s a look at more show events planned this year:
• Learn about honeybees with honey and maple syrup available to buy.
• John Deere Unstyled Tractor Field Days. “Unstyled” John Deere tractors are those made before 1939 when John Deere began covering the radiator, fuel tank and other parts with styled sheet metal. It took a few years before all models became “styled.”
• Church service in the barn at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
• Truck and tractor pull with Back
Road Pullers at 1 p.m. Sunday.
• A portable saw mill powered by Charles Hubbard of Chana, who will bring his 1916 Case steam tractor. The 20,000-pound tractor was used by Hubbard’s grandfather.
• The Bos’ behemoth Aultman and Taylor kerosene powered tractor owned by Chuck and Diane Bos. The popular 30-60, complete with 90-inch drive wheels and standing 11.5 feet tall and more than 18 feet long, was produced from 1910 until the company was sold in 1924.
Lewis said the shows would not be possible without the support of friends and neighbors.
“We have so many friends and families that help us,” Lewis said. “We
25-27.
couldn’t do it without them.”
For more information, visit bosbrothershistoricalfarm.com.
History of the name
Bos Brothers is how the Boses were known throughout the area. Clarence Bos had four boys – Robert, Bill, Charles and Peter. (Charles is Chuck and Kevin’s dad.) They all farmed together in the 1950s and 1960s in the Erie/Geneseo area.
“My dad remembers their grain trucks had the name Bos Bros. Erie ILL on it,” Lewis said. “That is how they were known in the community as the Bos Brothers. So the show is named after them. And we host the show in Erie, so it’s perfect.”

Fred traveled to 48 of the 50 states. The only two states he and his wife didn’t go to were Alaska and Hawaii.
Fred Allen Boggs grew up very poor in his childhood. In his adult life, he moved to Illinois to start his family and his career. In his later years, Fred enjoyed building all kinds of gadgets and fixing up all of his tractors, just to share his talents with the world.
He was influential because he struggled when he was poor, he was very hardworking and his legacy of creativeness still lives on to this day.
Fred Allen Boggs was born May 31, 1942, in Monteagle, Tennessee. Fred’s mother’s name is Nell and his father is Henry. Fred had four siblings. Their names are Dot, Peg, Charlie and Danny. Danny is the youngest of the siblings and Fred was the second youngest. Charlie is the only sibling who wanted to stay in Tennessee. Fred’s older brother was 15 years older than Fred. The other three of Fred’s siblings moved up to Illinois with him to start a new life and get a fresh start.
Also, Fred had an Aunt Kate who lived nearby. Aunt Kate passed away in the 1990s. She was about 100 years old when she died.
Fred went to school only through the sixth grade and after the sixth grade, he dropped out of school. As a result of dropping out in the sixth grade, he wasn’t able to learn how to read, write or even do simple math.
Fred grew up very poor in his childhood. Even though his family was very poor, it didn’t affect his happiness as a child. Fred grew up in a shack with a tin roof with all of his family members.
He grew up on Monteagle Mountain. The other name for this mountain is Cumberland Mountain. Fred grew up when segregation was still a thing. Segregation is when they separated white people from colored people.
Fred’s parents were in their mid 40s when his mother had Fred. Without a doubt, one of Fred’s favorite memories as a child was playing with his friends in the mountains. In addition, Fred always would drive around the mountains when he was bored.
Fred was married to Marie Alice
Boggs. Her last name before they got married was Sullivan. They were married for 61 years. Fred moved all the way up to Illinois in his early 20s to find a wife and that’s how he found Marie. As a result of moving all the way up to Illinois from Tennessee, he was not in any other marriages in his lifetime.
Fred and Marie had four children. Brian Schnell was the only son out of the four. Their three daughters are Regina, Becky and Billy. Billy, unfortunately, passed away in 2013.
Fred has six grandkids and seven great-grandchildren. Fred helped raise his granddaughter Erica and his oldest great-granddaughter Adrianna.
The types of jobs that Fred had were maintenance and being a moonshiner. A moonshiner is someone who illegally made alcohol when alcohol was illegal during the prohibition. It was called moonshine and he helped run it around and he helped make the alcohol.
What he did in maintenance was working in factories and working on all sorts of cars. During his lifetime, Fred was not involved in any version of the military.
Fred was able to fix any problems with cars no matter what was wrong with the car. He was extremely gifted in the maintenance and mechanic industry. He may not have been as gifted in the school aspect of things but he was undeniably the best mechanic/car person in the whole family.
Fred always liked to switch between cars. He could never stick with a certain type of car for a long period of time. When Fred used to drive a box truck for Buddy L Toy Company, he was driving under the Truck Eating Bridge and he didn’t realize that the truck wouldn’t fit under the bridge and he completely crashed into the bridge when he was delivering toys to the company store.
Fred retired from Collis in 2004.
Fred’s favorite foods were cornbread and fried okra.
Fred’s favorite hobby, without a doubt, was going on motorcycle rides with Marie. He would do that for a lot of his free time. Fred loved to take rides on his motorcycle back to Tennessee to remember all of his childhood memories and catch up with some old friends while he was there.
It was his favorite place to have a vacation. Fred had to get rid of his motorcycle in his 60s because of heart problems and poor health.
Fred unfortunately passed away from vascular dementia on Sept. 7, 2023, at Silvercrest Nursing Home in Davenport, Iowa.
Fred was 81 years old when he died. He is buried in Fulton next to his wife Marie and his daughter Billy.
Fred’s wife Marie also was 81 years old when she passed away in 2021 due to COPD, which is a sickness that makes you have difficulty breathing and affects your lungs.
Fred’s hardships in his life were his wife Marie passing away and his daughter passing away.
Fred’s achievement is that he built his own tractor by hand and with all scraps and nothing else but his head.
Fred’s lifelong friends are Mackenzie, who was a motorcycle friend, and Leon, who was a friend from Tennessee. Fred always visited Leon on his vacations back to Tennessee and they enjoyed a lot of their time together.
Fred spent his free time riding motorcycles and spending time with his grandchildren. Fred rode throughout 48 of the 50 states with his wife Marie and the only two states they didn’t go to were Hawaii and Alaska.
They had five to 10 horses in their pasture at their home.
The advice that Fred gave the younger generation is “It’s important to go to school and get a good education.”
In conclusion, Fred Allen Boggs was hardworking while having mul -
tiple jobs and he is gone but not forgotten.
While Fred did not have the best education and he grew up poor, he found time to love his family. Fred, while loving motorcycles, started a great family and loved his grandchildren.
Even though he is gone, his memory still lives on in our hearts to this day.
I loved doing this project because I got to learn a lot from my great-grandfather that I never would have found out if I didn’t do this activity.
As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life.
Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.
The project was a collaborative effort between students’ history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Ms. Shabani and their families. It was inspired by the original project that longtime English teacher Mrs. Wiersema made a tradition in her eighth grade class.
Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you all will enjoy their stories, too.

Farmers National Bank announced an expanded partnership with local law enforcement across all four of its branch communities to combat the growing threat of ATM and ITM fraud.
In response to a rise in skimming devices being placed on banking terminals, Farmers National Bank joined forces with other banks in Geneseo in March to purchase and donate a Skim Scan device to the Geneseo Police Department, bank officials said in a news release.
The portable devices enable officers to easily and quickly detect illegal skimmers during routine patrols, helping protect customers from identity theft and financial fraud, according to the release.
Following the success of the initial collaboration, Farmers National Bank has donated Skim Scan devices to police departments in Morrison, Mount Car -
roll and Prophetstown, demonstrating its continued commitment to building safer communities and protecting local residents, according to the release.
“At Farmers National Bank, we take the security of our customers and communities seriously,” said Tiffany Tipton, marketing manager of Farmers National Bank. “By partnering with our local police departments, we’re not only helping stop fraud before it happens but also reinforcing the strength of community cooperation.”
The devices are being used by officers to check ATMs throughout their towns, giving law enforcement another tool in their efforts to proactively stop criminal activity.
The initiative reflects Farmers National Bank’s ongoing investment in community well-being, innovation in fraud prevention and dedication to being “A Real Community Bank,” according to the release.

Hadley Vandermyde, 6, chosen by Performance Pony Company
SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
A young cowgirl from Morrison has been selected a member of the Performance Pony Company’s 2025 Pony Pro Team.
Hadley Vandermyde, 6, was chosen because of her dedication to her pony and desire to continue learning while helping others, the company announced in a July 1 news release.
Hadley and her ponies Jubilee and Tutti Fruity compete in barrel racing, pole bending, flag race and plug race events at about 15 events each year.
“Hadley’s favorite things to do with her ponies are to ride and run barrels, braid their hair and give them love. Some of her goals include running a full pattern without trotting, becoming a better rider, winning first place at a bar-
rel race and always having fun,” according to the release.
Hadley’s reference letters echo those sentiments.
“Hadley is a responsible pony owner and makes sure her pony has food and water, a clean stall and a hug every day. Hadley loves ponies, pictures of ponies, stories of ponies, talking about ponies, and, well, everything about ponies. If you ask her about ponies, be ready for a serious answer,” Daniel Kolar said.
“At the start of this year, Hadley and her pony Jubilee were still trotting with a little bit of loping. By the middle, they were running the whole pattern in both barrels and poles. Hadley put in time to condition her pony to be able to do this and she has taken lessons to help improve her horsemanship and riding skills. She is responsible for getting her pony ready to ride and making sure her pony is taken care of,” Kristen Purvis said.
Members of the 2025 Pony Pro Team are chosen specifically for their desire to ride and compete on small horses and ponies while using Performance Pony Company equipment and pro -
moting the brand.
“As part of the team, throughout the year members participate in bimonthly team Zoom meetings and individual challenges. These meetings consist of fun group activities that help expand their knowledge about the industry, equipment, strategies to perform better mentally and physically and ways to become better horsemen and horsewomen,” according to the release.
On the opposite months, Pony Pros complete individual “challenges” that also are designed to help them learn new strategies and prepare them for the future.
“For example, our February challenge was to complete a Mood Board to set the tone for the year. In the month of April, their challenge was to decipher the difference between the facts and feelings while competing to help them master their minds and think more like champions think,” according to the release. “We are proud to have Miss Hadley Vandermyde on the Pony Pro team.”
