Oregon native joins West Point Hall of Fame Crowell grew up in Oregon, lived on N. 4th Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in Oregon’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is part of a series of the articles he has written. By Otto Dick “West Point, N.Y. – Five All Americans, the first American to walk in space, a Heisman Trophy runner up, an Army Athletic Association Award winner, two legendary coaches and an administrator who also contributed as a multi-sport athlete, are among the candidates selected in the Army Sports Hall of Fame. “Carleton Crowell served as the head coach of Army’s track and field (1951-75) and cross country teams (195474) for more than 20 years. “As a Black Knights’ cross country coach, he registered a mark of 125-55 while his outdoor track and field teams finished 87-57 during his tenure and his indoor squads compiled a 139-50-1 mark, that translates to a winning percentage of .684. collected an impressive 34 victories opposite Navy in Star meetings. “Crowell also coached Ron Zinn and Ed Bagdonas who competed at the Olympics.” The above was a news release concerning a special plaque unveiling ceremony to be held in the Kenna Hall of Army Sports regarding the induction of Carleton Crowell, an Oregon native, and nine others, into the West Point Sports Hall of Fame. The official induction into the Hall of Fame occurred Friday, Sept. 13, 2013. A special black-tie Hall of Fame Induction Banquet was held at Eisenhower Hall later that evening. This group was also honored during Army’s football game against Stanford. Carleton Crowell’s grandparents homesteaded in Marion Township in 1836. The following year they settled on a 510 acre farm in Marion Township. Crowell’s ancestor’s first wife died in 1841. He had nine children with his second wife Sarah. One of these children was Solon W. born in Marion Township March 4, 1866. Solon W. and his wife Edith, who was originally from Creston, had three children, Cecil, Carleton and Jeanne.

Carleton’s father, Solon W., was a successful attorney and acquired several farms in Ogle County. He graduated from Carleton Crowell lived with his parents at 700 N. His grandfather homesteaded in Ogle County around the same time Oregon was founded, and then his father was a successful attorney and landowner. Carleton Crowell attended Oregon Public Schools graduating in 1931. He finished second in the quarter mile at the state track meet in the spring of 1931.
