SAFE PASSAGE Nonprofit Spotlight

With its mission to ensure that everyone has the right to live free from violence and abuse, the nonprofit Safe Passage has been dedicated to achieving its goals throughout DeKalb County since 1981

“Our agency promotes the right for nonviolent and abuse-free relationships,” said Becky Versluys, the agency’s executive director, “through advocacy, intervention, and prevention ”

Versluys took over Safe Passage’s role as executive director in July 2025, but she is no stranger to the organization Her passion for helping others in need began when she started there as a secretary 28 years ago She says she worked behind the scenes for many years and is poised for her new role as it enters its Capital Campaign to build a new shelter

“The need is critical for us to build a larger facility,” she says “Currently, we are able to serve 20 clients in our shelter, but with this expansion, we will be able to serve up to 50 clients and have a sufficient number of beds to keep families together and operate more efficiently in one building.”

According to statistics on the Safe Passage website, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate

partner in their lifetime In addition, Safe Passage responds to more than 6,200 annual calls to their hotline from domestic violence and sexual assault victims

To spread the word about ending domestic violence, Safe Passage’s key fundraising event is “Paint the Town Purple” which takes place during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in

October throughout DeKalb County

“We have high visibility with educational information about domestic violence at many businesses and also hold a family fun run,” notes Versluys Many different events take place including a candlelight vigil and support from local libraries, to name a few

The success of Safe Passage for its vast,

Lisa Casner, Safe Passage adult domestic violence counselor, talks about the banners behind her made by survivors to represent their own resilience during the annual Safe Passage Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil and Survivor Speak-Out on Oct. 7, 2024, inside the Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb.

caring support of individuals and families who experience abuse cannot be possible without the added loyalty and commitment of its many volunteers

Versluys says the need for additional volunteers is always there “We have various tasks like helping at the shelter, the hot line, organizing, helping with our fundraisers, and much more ”

Safe Passage is making a difference with compassionate intervention and proactive prevention to keep individuals and families safe throughout DeKalb county
