OHS kids help with Service Day Oregon High School art students used their talents to breath new life into an old ticket booth for the Autumn on Parade festival. During the annual OHS Service Day on Sept. 18, students painted the festival’s wooden Fun Zone ticket booth. OHS art teacher Cheryl Bunton supervised the project after AOP members were contacted by Shannon Creemens, a counselor at OHS and coordinator for the service day. “We really appreciate the students help and creativity with this project,” said AOP President Marseyne Snow. During OHS Service Day, students participated in a Walk for a Cause at the LandersLoomis Field while also having an opportunity to complete service projects on and off-site at a variety of locations. The Fun Zone is part of the Autumn on Parade festival that features attractions for kids.

Demolition of the former Ogle County Sheriff’s Office will move forward, pending approval from the county. A Loves Park company submitted the low bid of $96,615 for the project. Long Range Committee Chairman Don Griffin and architect Guy Gehlhausen, Saavedra Gehlhausen Architects, Rockford, held a bid opening Sept. 17 to reveal the quoted prices to have the building removed. The scope of work includes demolition and removal of the two-story structure at the corner of South Second Street and Jefferson Street in Oregon. The work also requires that foundations and demolition and removal of associated items and utilities. Asbestos abatement will need to be completed on the building before demolition and an underground fuel oil storage tank will need to be removed. “We have four bids for this project,” said Gehlhausen. One at a time each bid was opened and the amount as

announced. Packard Excavating, Rockford, bid $112,378 with a 60 day turnaround. Martin and Company, Oregon, bid $123,335 with a 90 day turnaround. Northern Illinois Services Co., Rockford, bid $112,907 with a 14 day turnaround. N-Trak Group LLC, Loves Park, bid $96,615 with a 60 day turnaround. “The next step is committee and board approval,” said Griffin. “N-Trak appears to be the low bidder but we will look over the contract.” Gehlhausen said the bid with contingencies was under the budget set by the county to demolish the building. Ogle County used the building as the sheriff’s office for approximately 30 years before opening the new Ogle County Public Safety Complex in April. The former building was originally used as the offices of E.D. Etnyre before the company donated it to Ogle County after its operations were moved to a new facility on S. Daysville Road. The county board will meet Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the Ogle County Courthouse.

Vehicle windows shot in Oregon The Oregon Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in solving who is responsible for shooting out the windows in seven vehicles over the weekend. According to a press release from Police Chief Darin DeHaan, police were called to the 500 block of South Second Street around 10 p.m. Sunday night because the window of a vehicle had been shot out with a small projectile. Upon further checking in the area, six more vehicles found with similar damage. “The damage appears to be random, and the victims

do not have anything in common. This may be related to similar damage reported in the county,” DeHaan said in the press release. Police believe the damage took place between 10 p.m. on Sept. 19 and 3 a.m. on Sept. 20. Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the Oregon Police Department at 815-732-2803 or on Facebook. Ogle County Sgt. Greg Kunce said a similar incident took place at Mt. Morris Estates within the last several days. He said the window of a vehicle there was damaged by what appeared to be BBs.

Bison bring crowd to Nachusa Grasslands Autumn on Prairie Don Muggenborg and Mary Ellen Waterson both noticed something different at the Nachusa Grassland’s annual Autumn on the Prairie Saturday — a lot more people. The Lemont and Batavia residents had journeyed to the Grasslands’ event before...before the bison’s return that is. “I’ve been here before, but we’ve never seen such a crowd,” said Waterson. “but they didn’t have bison before.” The bison herd arrived at the Grasslands last October and have since added brand

new baby bison this year. That bison buzz brought more than 1,200 visitors by mid-afternoon to Saturday’s event. Visitors patiently waited in the bison tour line as organizers kept busy shuttling eager people back to the bison area with tractors and hay racks. “We’ve had a very good turnout today,” said Bill Kleiman, Grasslands manager. “We are trying to keep up.” On sunny and mild day, visitors could also learn about native species and Grasslands habitat, take a

walking tour into the prairie, try and catch a butterfly, or ride a horsedrawn wagon through the tall grass. Waterson and Muggenborg walked slowly along one of the self-guided tours stopping to read signs that described particular plants. “We have bison at the Fermi-lab in Batavia. Do I go see them? No, but I came here today to make a trip out of it,” Waterson said. Nachusa Grasslands is owned and operated by the Nature Conservancy.
