Forthesecondtimeinfivemonths, buildingsatanOgleCountyriding centerhavebeenseverelydamagedby strongwinds. “Ireceivedacallat6:29p.m.onSundaythatourloafingshedwasgoneand ourentryway,whichwehadjust pickedupandmovedtothesidein ordertoworkonthebarn,hadbeen tossed,”saidDonnaFellows,Pegasus SpecialRiderspresidentonMonday. “Theyjuststarteddismantlingthe barnonAug.22torepairthedamage inMarchandnowsixdayslaterweget moredamage.”

LocatedonCarthageRoad,southof Oregon,justnorthoftheLeeCounty line,thecenterwasstillreelingfrom thatstorm,whichtookthesouthendof the“hoop”arenabarnoffitsmoorings, rattlingthe11horsesthatwerehoused underthewoodenhaymowatthe southendofthe62-by-420-footbuilding.Thehorsesandtwocatsthat residedinthestructurewerenothurt.

Thewindalsopushedthenorthend ofthebuildingin,twistingandbendingthelargegaragedoor. The“hoop”buildingwasconstructedin2002.Itsroofandsidesconsistedofalargetarpcalleda“coverall”thatstretchedoverthesteelframe. Sectionsofthetarpweretornfromthe frameanddepositednearby,while somesectionsremainedontheframe withlargegapingtears. Thelargearchedentrywaythatwas atthenorthendofthebarnwassalvagedfromtheMarchstormand movedjustafewyardsawayfromthe barnwhilecontractorsbegandismantlingthemainstructurelastMonday. ButSunday’swindstormchanged allthat,twistingtheentrywayand dumpingitontoitssidewhilestrippingmetalsidingfromtheloafingbarn anddepositingitacrossthedriveway whilewrappingsomepiecesaround severaltreestothenorth. Thehorsesandcatswereagainrattledbythedestruction, butunhurt, Fellowssaid.

Anothersentimentwas“Weasapeopleareone,it’sthegovernmentsthat setusapart.”Thedaywasamemorableandvaluableexperience.

Thetripknownas“RoutetoRoots” wasledbyDr.WolfgangGrams.The groupincludedaGermanTVcrewof NDR/ARD,aNorthernGerman branchofthePublicBroadcastSystem makingadocumentaryoftheirjourney. Icamewellpreparedtomakecontactsarmedwithacopyofanoldmap ofOstfrieslandmarkedwiththelocationswheremyancestorshadlived andmyfamilytree.Althoughmy father could speak fluent Plattdeutsch, adialectknownasLowGerman,Icannot.Iknewthatonlyafewinthegroup couldspeakEnglish.

BYOTTODICK ThisHistoricalRecordsSurveywasundertakeninthe winterof1935forthepurpose ofprovidingemploymenttoneedy unemployedhistorians,lawyers, teachers,researchandclericalworkers. Thisprojectwasorganizedtocompileinventoriesofhistoricalmaterials ofgovernmentagencies, inthiscase OgleCounty. Thissurvey’spurposewastolocate, describelandandclassifycounty recordstomakethemeasilyaccessible tocountyofficials,thegeneralpublic andresearchworkers.

terEmma,marriedtoRev.Wolfe,lost themostandJohngavehissisterthe bigbeautifulhome.HeandLillian movedtoanothersmallerhouseonthe property. WhenwemovedtoPoloin1938 all thishadtakenplaceandwemoved across the street from Emma.John andLillianliveddownthe hillabit. Lillianwasmymother’sfriend.When grandchildrenwouldarrivefromColorado,Iwouldbeinvitedovertoplay withthem.Iwasalwaysinaweofthe grandandglorioushome. Eventually Rev.Wolfe diedand EmmaandtheirdaughterLydiacould nolongerkeepupthehome. Itwas soldin1943toCharlieWolfwhowas norelationtotheWolfefamily.Iloved theSantathatalwaysstoodonthe stepsgoingupstairsatChristmastime. Icouldseehimfrommybedroomwindow.Thehousehasbeenownedby numerouspeoplesincethenandIhave alwayslovedit.
