Council OKs process to expedite City Hall roof repairs

OREGON – Even City Hall couldn’t escape damage from the April 4 hailstorm.

The City Council agreed Tuesday to forgo the bid process for roof repairs, clearing the way for City Manager Darin DeHaan to expedite the process.

“This allows us to speed up the process so we can repair the roof,” DaHaan said, adding he still would seek estimates from several contractors for the work.

DeHaan said the city’s cost to repair the roof could be between $28,000 and $35,000, depending on how much damage is found. Because of the age of the roof, insurance will not cover 100% of the cost, he said.

“It had been in our comprehensive

He said air conditioning units will have to be removed when the work is done.

DeHaan said he was in the process of seeking estimates from contractors who could perform the repairs.

The hailstorm hit portions of Ogle County on the afternoon of April 4, leaving a trail of damage on roofs, autos and trees in Oregon.

families and friends. Funds raised through the Tootsie Roll Drive help support the Knights of Columbus programs in Illinois such as Special Olympics and homes for some intellectually disabled. Local organizations that split $4,640

inches in diameter in some instances –hit the area about 12:15 p.m. and lasted for about four minutes, stripping bark from tree branches, denting cars and overflowing gutter systems on homes.

The hail created rivers along some streets as catch basins clogged, leaving piles of hail along the curb and at some intersections.

The city’s street department had to clear some streets with an end loader.

The hail didn’t discriminate, damaging police cars and other public buildings in its wake.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said his department had about 23 squad cars damaged by hail.

The storm also brought a “flood” of contractors to town with some going door-to-door offering free hail damage estimates.

Sauerkraut Days’ fireworks steal the show

Organizers estimate more than 800 people attended 4-day community event

FORRESTON – Forreston Sauerkraut Days’ first fireworks in 19 years stole the show, event organizers said.

“Honestly, everybody is still talking about the fireworks because they were so awesome,” said Jane Koeller, Sauerkraut Days Committee chairperson. “I think that kind of set the tone for the whole weekend. The fireworks were so good and everything else just followed suit.”

She credited Forreston Mutual Insurance with making the firework show possible. The company stepped in to cover two-thirds of the cost.

“There are people that are firework connoisseurs, for lack of a better word, and they said they have never seen better fireworks [than] this year,” Koeller said.

Forreston Sauerkraut Days kicked off with fireworks on Thursday, Aug. 3, and concluded with a community breakfast and church service Sunday, Aug. 6.

The bulk of events took place Friday and Saturday, including the Forreston American Legion Post No. 308 sauerkraut lunch, a parade, the Cabbage Patch Kids Fun Run, a dunk tank, kids inflatables, the American Legion Car and Bike Show, a watermelon eating contest, pork chop dinner and more.

Koeller said committee members Jeremy and Maria Whitehead, who manned a food tent, estimated more than 800 people attended.

“It was nice seeing so many people out and about and enjoying things and taking part,” Koeller said. “We can give them these events, but if they don’t come take part, what’s the point. The fact that the people also take part in it and come enjoy it, that’s so rewarding for the work we do.”

The Forreston Sauerkraut Days Committee is made up of Koeller, Jeremy Whitehead, Maria Whitehead, Katie Kalina, Holly Bawinkel, Julie Heeren, Kim Vinnedge, Dorene Mulder, Kathy Bickford, Shaunna Zettle and Amy Houston.

“We’ve already started talking about new and improved things for next year,” Koeller said. “We’ll have our closure meeting for this year in the last week of August, close up this year and start talking about next year.”

One thing that will be returning are the fireworks put on by Crafter Fireworks of Mineral, Illinois.

“We already have them booked for next year,” Koeller said.

Peek Home deeply imbedded in Polo community

The story of the Peek Home is deeply imbedded in the Polo community and will be in our hearts forever. It is so much so that we never tire of hearing the story over and over again. That is why a couple of years ago, a hundred people showed up at the Polo Senior Center to hear the history of the home and the children who lived there many years ago.

All of us like to reflect back on our childhood and the home we grew up in by looking at pictures, listening to the stories family members tell and even revisiting the spot that we remember so dearly.

This past week was no different for Tom Nelson, who grew up at the Peek Home and was brought there as a child. The trip from Aurora seemed to take forever and it was on April 1, 1953. It was no April Fool’s Day joke.

POLO HISTORY

It is hard to imagine being transported from your home as a child to another place many miles away. This place would be your home for the rest of your childhood and the stories you tell would be about growing up with other children in the same situation. This past week several of us drove to the Peek Home to meet the new owner and to listen to Nelson as he told us stories of growing up in the country near Polo. Tom has returned to the community that welcomed him so warmly as a child. He is part of the Polo Historical Society and has put

together a little booklet on the history of Peek Home.

This is part of the story of Peek Home we recently put together as a display in a cabinet donated by Ed and Karen Olsen. We would like to light up the cabinet and we still are working on that part.

Tom also is working on his writing skills by taking classes at Sauk Valley Community College. He will be writing a book about his experiences growing up at Peek Home and he showed us last week some of the spots he loved dearly while he lived there.

Tom showed us the playground equipment he loved to play on as a child. He also pointed out the bedroom he had as a child.

He still can envision the baseball diamond where they played baseball as kids and he pointed out the barn

area where he helped milk cows. They had to get up at 4 in the morning when it was still dark.

When the chores and breakfast were done, he walked to a new school called the Moore School. He started out in the third grade ready for new experiences.

As the years went by, Peek Home was where he learned to drive, to date as a teenager and where many fond memories were made.

When he was asked several years later if he wanted to go back to the city to live, he was quick to answer, “Why would I want to go back to that environment when this is now my home?”

Nachusa Grasslands a wonderful site to see bison

Marilyn and I have visited the Nachusa Grasslands many times searching for bison. When we see them, we usually stop and turn on the hazard lights. This is a rare privilege we have right here in Ogle County.

The Nachusa Grasslands is a 3,800acre restored tall-grass prairie located in Lee and Ogle counties. It is managed by the Nature Conservancy staff and volunteers.

Most of Illinois was tall-grass prairie at the time of statehood in 1818. Most of the prairie has since been plowed up for farmland. The first major land acquisition of 400 acres occurred in 1986. More acreage was added to create the Nachusa Grasslands’ 3,800 acres.

Tall-grass prairies receive more than 30 inches of rain a year and shortgrass prairies receive only 12 inches each year.

Controlled burning maintains the prairie, clearing away dead vegetation and preventing trees from shading out the grasses and herbaceous plants.

They also depend on the presence of large grazing animals, particularly bison.

In February 2020, a fire destroyed the site’s pole barn along with much of the equipment used to care for the preserve.

A wonderful visitor center is located at 2075 Lowden Road. The prairie, wetlands and woods are open to the public every day from dawn until dusk. Trailhead signs are posted at Clear Creek Knolls, Big Jump Prairie, Stonebarn

Savanna, Thelma Carpenter Prairie and Meiners Wetlands. You are encouraged to hike the trails and explore the prairie.

There is a public restroom and a water hand pump at the Visitor Center.

The most hunted animal on the prairies were the bison. They were driven into fenced pens called buffalo pounds to be killed with bows and arrows or spears or driven off a cliff called a buffalo jump to kill or injure the bison. This was followed by the policy of killing by European Americans and Canadians for commercial reasons.

This caused a dramatic drop in bison numbers from millions to a few hundred in a century’s time and almost caused their extinction.

Thirty bison from the Wind Cave bison herd were released at Nachusa in October 2014. This was the first conservation herd in Illinois.

Today, there are about 130 bison at Nachusa and during this year’s mating season there were 30 calves.

It’s a great site seeing the mothers with their offspring. If the buffalo are close enough to us, Marilyn usually counts the calves.

Add the Nachusa Prairie to your list, along with the Black Hawk Statue, White Pines State Park, Castle Rock State Park, Oregon Depot, Chana School, Stronghold Castle and the recently refurbished Oregon Coliseum.

Let’s show pride in this wonderful community.

Prince Charming gets all gussied up at 4-H Fair

OREGON – Ellie Schier has her own Prince Charming and he’s definitely beefier than any two-legged Disney version and has his own unique “once upon a time” story.

“He was just a little calf and he was really sick when he was little so we had to put him in the garage for about a month,” said Ellie, a member of the Carefree 4-H Club. “We didn’t think he’d make it, but he did and here he is now.”

The 9-year-old from Mt. Morris was busy giving Prince Charming, her 1,275-pound Angus cross calf, a bath, prepping him for his next showing at the Ogle County 4-H Fair, held in conjunction with the Ogle County Fair.

Ellie soaped up 18-month-old Prince Charming as her mom, Emily, helped at the washing station behind the beef barn.

“He came from our family farm and he was very little,” Emily said. “Ellie nursed him along and last year she was able to show him as a bucket calf.”

His name was a no-brainer, putting his Disney namesakes to shame.

“He looked like a cow prince,” Ellie said, smiling. “And he is more handsome.”

One barn over, Brooke Ewald, 20, of Byron was washing down her very vocal ewe, Dime.

“She’s always like this,” said Ewald, rinsing off the bleating 6-month-old. “Her mom’s name is Penny, so we named her Dime. She is very vocal.”

In the hog barn, Addy Miller, 13, of Byron watched as her cousin, Caylen Kirchner, 10, of Leaf River carefully directed Jazzy, a 275-pound Berkshire gilt, to her washing station.

“She’s 7 months old and she’s very good,” said Addy, a member of the Carefree 4-H Club.

At the other end of the sheep barn, Henry Hoffman, 10, of Mt. Morris and his buddies Warren and Wallace Meiners, 10 and 6, of Oregon were carefully petting one of the quieter ewes.

“We just like to come and see the animals,” Henry said.

The 170th Ogle County Fair concluded Sunday after a five-day run at the fairgrounds at 1440 N. Limekiln Road, just west of Oregon. Events included a queen pageant, tractor and truck pulls, the Big Hat Rodeo and demolition derby.

History of the fair

The first Ogle County Fair was held in October 1853 on the lawn of the Ogle County Courthouse. In the early years, it was held at several places and on one occasion in Byron.

In 1856, a group of citizens bought

10 acres of land in the north section of Oregon along state Route 2. An additional 10 acres was bought in 1858, followed by the acquisition of six acres from Mr. E.S. Potter in 1901. Ten more acres were later bought from the estate of James H. Cartwright. The grandstand was constructed in 1925, followed by the horse barn in 1927. The fair encompassed about 40 acres by 1968.

A larger venue was created in 1993 west of town and a fair board was created and the new organization was chartered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Wrecking havoc: Sterling, Rock Falls drivers smash their way to trophies at demolition derby

OREGON – Jacqueline Shaner knew she had to have one last special ride in her 2008 Chevy Equinox. Her brother, Justin, made sure it was extra special.

The Rock Falls siblings crawled into the multicolored SUV on Aug. 5 to square off against 11 others in the Mini Van/SUV demolition derby event at the Ogle County Fair.

“This was my car and it was very special to me because my dad had worked on it for me before he passed,” said Jacqueline, 26. “It has 228,000 miles on it, so I decided to give it to my brother for the demolition derby and I told him I’d ride along with him.”

With Justin, 33, behind the wheel, the #siblings vehicle – painted by Jacqueline across the hood – banged and scraped its way to a third-place finish after being hobbled by a hit to a rear quarter panel late in the heat.

After a quick lift from a skidloader, the SUV started back up and wobbled off the field under its own power.

Justin was happy with the thirdplace finish, considering it took him only three days to change his sister’s ride into a demo car.

“If we hadn’t have gotten hit there, I think we could have had second place,” he said.

He prepped the car mechanically, but his sister was in charge of aesthetics.

“I had no say into what went on this car,” Justin said, smiling. “She decorated it.”

Justin has driven in demolition heats before, but it was the first ride for Jacqueline.

“It wasn’t scary, but it was painful,” she said.

Justin thinks the SUV has at least one more race in it.

“I guess we’ll see for sure. We’re planning on going to Milledgeville,” he said.

That demolition derby is Saturday at the Carroll County Fair.

The Shaners weren’t the only Sauk Valley drivers to fare well at the fair.

Tyler Bielema, 18, of Sterling outlasted three other competitors in his 1999 Crown Victoria in the Young Guns heat. He maneuvered the big blue and white behemoth around the track before knocking out Gavin Smith of Lacon with a shot to his radiator.

“I didn’t know any of the other guys in the race, so I just went out and played defense for a while,” Bielema said.

He found his ride in Kansas.

“I worked on it about nine months,” said Bielema, who plans to run it

Saturday, too.

The quickest turnaround time for a ride at the event had to go to Brenton Muntean, 24, of Sterling, who transformed a 2000 Chevy Malibu into a gray heap of metal in just about six hours.

“I had another car I was going to run, but it needed a strut, so I stayed up to 4 a.m. working on a friend’s car, got an hour and a half of sleep and made this one,” Muntean said.

Muntean, with his cousin Jaden as his passenger, finished second, outlasting 13 others in the Open Wire Compact heat.

Jaden gave an enthusiastic wave to the crowd from his seat when the heat ended.

Upcoming demolition derbies are 7 p.m. Saturday at the Carroll County Fair and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Whiteside County Fair in Morrison.

Cheryl was born in the city of Beloit in Rock County, Wisconsin on May 15, 1958. She was the third child, and the second daughter of Harley David Houghton and Joyce Yvonne (Hovland) Houghton.

On December 27, 1980, she married Douglas Paul Merchant at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Morris, Illinois.

She was an avid gardener, golfer, skier (both snow and water), scrapbooker (slash “wine enthusiast”), and traveler. Memorable trips include visits to Spain, France, Germany,

Switzerland, Mexico, the Virgin Islands, and Hawaii; as well as frequent golf trips to Arizona and visits with family in Colorado. Her warm-hearted personality, sparkling smile, and boundless love for life, family, and friends will be dearly and deeply cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Doug; children Aaron Merchant of Urbana, IL; Cliff Merchant (Susan Weston) of Avon/Eagle-Vail, CO; Jacqlyn (Jackie) Merchant-Abdar (Omid Abdar) of Champaign, IL; Alex Merchant of St. Louis, MO; siblings Debby (Richard) Johnson, Robeline, LA; Kris Houghton, Berthoud, CO; Craig (Renee) Houghton, Rock City, IL; Angela Ochoa, Bolingbrook, IL; Scott (Sherrie) Houghton, Golden, CO; sisters-in-law Susan Bracken, Ocala, FL; Betsy (Ron) Myatt, Herrin, IL; Patricia (Jim) Elliott, Frederick, MD; Debra Merchant, Mt Carroll, IL; brothers-in-law David Merchant, Lanark, IL; Donald Merchant (Mary Woods), Freeport, IL; Jose Ochoa, Jr., Batavia, IL; step-mother-in-law Virginia Merchant, Bettendorf, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law Paul K. Merchant; mother-in-law Elizabeth J. (Fuchiek) Merchant; and sistersin-law Sara (Daehler) Merchant and Rebecca (Holland) Houghton.

How to support children in their own reading to learn

It’s hard to believe that it is time to go back to school again!

As our children and grandchildren begin a new school year, we want them to be interested in learning about their world. In this information age we all spend time – maybe more than ever –reading to find out, reading to learn.

For this month, let’s look at how we can support our children and grandchildren in their own reading to learn.

It used to be that educators said students in kindergarten, first and second grades were learning to read. From third grade on, the focus changed to reading to learn. Literacy leaders now say the focus should be on reading to learn from the very beginning.

The change comes for several reasons. One is that we need to be careful when working with beginning readers to always make sure they understand that the purpose is to understand what is read. Our goal is always to make meaning from the text, whatever it is.

READING MATTERS

Mary Gardner

Sometimes young readers are working so hard to figure out words that they do not see that those words on the page or screen should make sense.

Another reason for the change is the use of technology. Our young children and grandchildren are skilled at using any number of digital devices. Many of them are skilled at reading and understanding their way around games, music, text messaging and using apps. So in many ways they come to school with lots of experiences in reading to learn. They may not be reading and understanding traditional books, but we must accept and build upon the knowledge they bring.

Consider taking a family reading-to-

learn inventory. Ask everyone in the family to write down each time in a day or a week that they read something. Count everything including text messages, email, cereal boxes, labels on a shampoo bottle, recipes, etc. At the end of the designated time, look at the lists created by each family member. Have a discussion about the different kinds of reading.

Decide together the categories according to the purpose for reading, such as reading for entertainment, to learn how to do something or for information. This could lead to several discussions about our purposes for reading, but for sure it will point out the many ways we read to learn.

We also can point out times we are reading something to get information or to find out how to do something. It is important for young readers to know that even grownups need to read to learn something.

If you have a reluctant reader or are

concerned that your children or grandchildren may not be reading enough, you might consider focusing on reading to learn something new. Reading for an authentic purpose such as reading directions or a recipe may be motivation to read more. Help support a child’s interest by looking for books, newspaper or magazine articles or internet sources that provide more information about that interest.

Our children and grandchildren may not be “reading” in the traditional sense of sitting down with a book. However, they are reading and seeking out information in many ways. So no matter what ages they might be, we can and should support and encourage them as they use reading to learn.

• Mary Gardner is a retired teacher who specialized in reading and still is an instructor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Northern Illinois University.
