CHANA – Before walkers and runners lined up to start the 6th Infinity Run last weekend, Stephanie White reminded participants of the reasons for the event – Maggie and Amos.
“We do this to remember Maggie and Amos with happy thoughts,” said White, a social worker at Chana Education Center and co-worker of Maggie (Rosko) Meyer.
Maggie, 31, died in a house fire on Oct. 19, 2016, in Byron, along with her 3-year-old son, Amos. She was a school teacher at the Chana Education Center at the time of her death. Duane C. Meyer, Maggie’s ex-husband and Amos’ father, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death. His case is pending in Ogle County court.
Shortly after their deaths, Maggie’s friends and coworkers formed The Maggie & Amos Foundation, a 501(c) (3) organization, to keep their memories alive and help other schools and agencies with youth-related projects.
In January, a record-breaking number of requests were received for The Maggie & Amos Foundation’s “Fall” in Love Learning Grants and $8,700 was awarded to 22 educators in eight school districts. The maximum grant amount was $500.
There were a record number of applicants and number of projects funded, said Megan Dettman, one of The Maggie & Amos Foundation’s main coordinators. “That was really cool and we were able to give to a lot of different schools,” she said.
White echoed that sentiment Saturday, thanking everyone who was participating, donating or sponsoring the event.
“Maggie loved to run races, whether it was a 5K or a triathalon – she just ran,” White said. “We want to keep
happy memories of Maggie and Amos alive and seek all that was good about Maggie and Amos.”
Maggie was an advocate of students with disabilities and heavily focused on community inclusion and service to better the lives of others, White said.
Eight-month-old Penny Rose had the perfect seat for the run – literally.
Wearing a little pink hat, she leaned back comfortably in her stroller – powered by mom and dad Richard and Brittney Nelson of Polo – and watched the runners start the 5K.
At the race’s midpoint, Penny Rose had seen enough of the course and opted for a nap.
“She crashed at the two-mile mark,” Brittney said.
At the end of the race, the family sat outside the Chana Education Center eating breakfast.
“Yep, she woke up just in time for her bottle,” Brittney said, smiling. Saturday’s event started at the Chana Education Center with the 5K
and 1-mile Fun Run and Heritage Tractor Show, followed by breakfast in the school’s cafeteria. Events continued at the Rochelle Conservation Club – a few miles east of town – with a corn hole bags tournament and free children’s activities that included bounce houses, face painting, a scavenger hunt and silent and live auctions.
Live music by Burn N’ Bush and the monthly steak fry by Rochelle Conservation Club wrapped up the day’s events.
All proceeds from the event will be used to continue the foundation’s mission.
To date, the foundation has provided more than $42,000 in educational grants, scholarships and free children’s programming to local schools, libraries and communities.

The program begins at 10 a.m.
In 1928, Strong bought 360 acres of property overlooking the Rock River to build a summer home for his family. It’s now called the Stronghold Camp & Retreat Center.
Unfortunately, Strong spent only one summer in the almost completed castle before dying of a heart attack on May 10, 1931, at his home in Winnetka, Illinois. He was only 47.
His wife, Josephine, divided her
time between the Winnetka home and Stronghold until her death in 1961.
Stronghold was sold to the Presbyterian church in 1962 and operated as a four-season retreat center until 2019 when it separated from the presbytery.
Today, Stronghold Camp & Retreat Center is a nonprofit that operates year-round without underwriting by the Presbyterian church. The castle and camp have become a wedding destination location with guests able to stay overnight on the property while they attend wedding celebrations.
Pierce is a former college professor at Maryville College in Tennessee who was brought to Illinois in 2016 to manage the transition from the private to public institution.

By RACHEL RODGERS and EARLEEN HINTON rrodgers@shawmedia.com and ehinton@oglecountynews.comFRANKLIN GROVE – Restoration efforts at Franklin Creek State Natural Area that include clearing certain trees and growing prairie have a group of horse riding enthusiasts and others raising concerns about aesthetics and making the trails less “user friendly.”
Earlier this year, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Middle Rock Conservation Partners and The Nature Conservancy cleared an area near the horse trails to get rid of what they describe as “weedy” trees of mostly box elder and some cherry, elm and honey locust. They then planted a mix of more than 100 wildflowers and grasses.
“At FCNA, open grown oaks are crowded with trees that are not oak,” according to project details from Middle Rock. “Thinning the small trees serves oak regeneration and wildflower recovery, which benefits wildlife.”
According to signage at the park: “This will create a diverse habitat for all kinds of wildlife and support the rare oak woodland next to it. The oak woodland needs more sunlight, increased air movement and occasional prescribed fire.”
The projects are meant to promote the oak-hickory forest in the park and follow state conservation goals of protecting species in greatest need of conservation, site superintendent Matt Hoogerwerf said.
“The recent habitat projects are designed to restore Franklin Creek State Natural Area, identified as a high-priority focus area, to an oak-hickory-dominated upland forest as set forth in the Illinois Wildlife Action Plan,” he said.
“The Wildlife Action Plan, created in 2005 and updated in 2015 with the help from over 100 partners in conservation, attempts to ‘assess the health of Illinois’ wildlife and supporting habitats, identify the problems they face and, most importantly, outline the strategies and actions needed to conserve them over the long term.’ ”
Marge Dixon, a horse rider and member of the Franklin Creek Horsecamp and Trails group, said she has been using the trails for 35 years and the trees provided not only shade near the trails but also beautiful scenery.
Concerned about recent and future plans for tree clearing and increased prairie, Dixon hosted a meeting at the park at the end of May and said about 40
or 50 people attended.
“This is one of the most diverse woodlands in Lee County. The diversity of trees makes it beautiful,” Dixon said. “There’s got to be some kind of compromise.”
She said she wants people’s concerns to be heard and to find a way to work with officials to ease off the clearings.
Jim Lillyman, chairman of the Franklin Creek Conservation Association, and John Nicholson, the organization’s co-chairman, joined Dixon and other area residents Wednesday in asking state Rep. Brad Fritts, R-Dixon, to intervene in plans to remove further trees along the trails.
Nicholson said the area wasn’t a prairie historically and it has been a recreation area for local residents, created by volunteers who built shelters and trails.
“It wasn’t a prairie unless you go back 20,000 years,” he said.
The park includes 12 miles of equestrian trails and camping only for those
“We use that area. We should have some voice,” said Jim Merrell, a horse rider who lives west of Polo. “The grasslands are beautiful and what they are doing north of Naylor Road is fine. But not many people can get in to see it on horses or by walking.”
“We have a premiere horse facility that people come from all over to enjoy,” David Dixon said.
Franklin Creek State Natural Area is located in Lee County, northwest of the village of Franklin Grove and east of Dixon. Franklin Creek flows throughout the park, which spans about 900 acres and includes a 198-acre nature preserve.
The mill spring provided water power for the largest grist mill in Lee County, constructed in 1847.
It also is home to the Franklin Creek Grist Mill, which is leased to the Franklin Creek Conservation Association and owned by the IDNR.
Franklin Creek Conservation Association members are the stewards of the grist mill and use it as a Welcome and Education Center, hosting activities and events as well as temporary and permanent exhibits.
Lillyman said the FCCA advocates for all users of the park and will try to keep it as a “people’s park.”
Fritts said he would seek additional information from everyone involved in the project to see if a compromise could be reached. He also said he plans to ride horses at the site soon.
Fritts’ visit to Franklin Grove marked the first day of his 2023 Summer Tour that includes traveling office hours and coffee and conversation events held on alternating weeks until Aug. 30.
Photo provided by Michal Burnett, Ogle County Historical Society Walter Strong is shown outside Stronghold Castle with his dog in 1930.Kendall Kyker was just about ready to head home from a long day of work June 9 when someone reported a “big old hole” in front of the Shell station along Route 26.
Kyker sped over to the intersection of Colden and Division avenues.
“Yep, there it was, a very big hole,” he said. “They said you could fit a car in it and I believe you could have.”
Kyker has been working side by side with Martin & Co. as the Colden Street Project – a $3.5 million storm sewer improvement plan – enters its second year. The project encompasses about 10.5 blocks in both the downtown business district and residential neighborhoods and is meant to help regulate water buildup on Division Avenue during torrential rain events.
The sinkhole was formed by an old leaky stormwater sewer pipe located under the state highway’s concrete base and asphalt topping, Kyker said, as he looked into the
hole with Travis Coil of Martin & Co.
“It’s an old pipe made from clay tile,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons we’ve been doing this project.”
Coil and Kyker estimated the hole to be 10 feet long, 7 feet wide and 10 feet deep. They jumped into action and had a city dump truck bring large loads of gravel to fill in the hole temporarily.
“We knew we were going to run into this type of thing anyway, but this is bigger than we thought,” Kyker said. “This is actually on the list to get fixed.”
Coil said his crew was working west of the intersection when the hole appeared.
“It’s a good thing it happened while we were all here. It would have been really bad if it would have happened after dark,” he said. “This was literally a preexisting condition, but God was here and said, ‘Fix it now.’ ”
One lane of the highway was shut down as the emergency repairs were made. The highway was expected to be OK for travel over the weekend, Kyker said, with more repairs scheduled for this week.
It is summertime and that means reunions.
For me, this year was the gathering of the Isley family in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, at the Drury Plaza Hotel.
It is hard to believe that we started out 40 years ago at the home of my Uncle Bill and Aunt Maxine Zickfield beside the rose gardens in Cape Girardeau.
My sister Ruby Jean took it from there and two years later we gathered at the Pere Marquette State Park and I remember crossing the river on the ferry. We had lost my Uncle Bill, but Elizabeth came just a few days old in her little carrier and we all were introduced to the latest member of the family.
Organizer Ruby Jean had us for five reunions at the Holiday Inn in Effingham, Illinois, and we loved that little place with its outdoor pool. It had an overhang covered patio where the older people could visit and watch the families playing in the pool. We commented this weekend on how
Betty Obendorfmuch we enjoyed that spot. But we outgrew it and Ruby Jean looked for another spot.
The Northfield Inn at Springfield was not even completed when Ruby Jean lined us up for seven reunions in Springfield. They had things for the kids to do and an ice cream shop, which was a favorite place to visit in the evening.
We gathered Friday evening at a big restaurant for fish that was wonderful. We had a long table of Isley cousins chattering away. We kept the museums busy the next day and we had an indoor pool for the kids.
We celebrated my Aunt Carma’s 90th birthday at Northfield Inn and time marched on. We lost Aunt Carma at 100 this past year.
When we said goodbye in 2018, lit-
tle did we know that would be the last time we would see my brother Ed, and Ruby Jean by that time was in the nursing home in Polo. But cousins in Missouri picked up the reins and we went back to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in 2021.
This year, those Missouri cousins again planned a great time for us and we started gathering Friday afternoon at the Drury Plaza Hotel in Cape Girardeau. Early Saturday morning, Claire from Metropolis and Holly and Rose from LaPorte met up for the first time and they instantly connected. Olivia from Cape Girardeau joined them that evening and those little girls had what they called a “blast.” That is what it is all about. Family getting to know one another.
At noon Saturday, we all gathered at the farm of cousin Mike, his wife, Nancy, and their son John. We had a wonderful picnic lunch and the kids had a great time playing in their pool. Visiting was superb. Mike is a minister in Cape Girardeau and has church groups there.
Our evening dinner for more than 60 people was at the Drury Hotel and we celebrated my 91st birthday. We also met the newest member of the family that evening. We even had a fire alarm and the fire trucks came to the reunion.
Many memories are made at these reunions and we have many picture boards and a big genealogy family tree that my sister Ruby Jean made years ago.
The young people pore over that tree each time and they are fascinated with it. Histories of my grandparents, stories and memorabilia of family members are out on a long table. By the time people leave, they know more each time about the family, and the tradition my aunt and uncle started goes on.
My sister Ruby, who put her heart and soul in all those reunions, would have been pleased.

The Blue Star Memorial Program was a project started by the National Garden Club in 1945 to honor men and women who served during World War II.
The designation of Blue Star highways was achieved through petitions to state legislatures and cooperation with the state departments of transportation. In 1951, a uniform marker was designed to include all men and women who had served, were serving or would serve in the armed forces.
On Nov. 4, 1955, Illinois Route 2 from South Rockford to Sterling running through Byron, Oregon and Dixon was designated a Blue Star Memorial Highway. A sign was erected in 1970 during the Vietnam War paying tribute to the U.S. armed forces.
The sign was sponsored by the Rock River Garden Club and is located at a rest area on the banks of the Rock River on Illinois 2. It is a short distance from the Lee and Ogle counties border.
The Blue Star Highway sign is one of eight located in northwest Illinois. Three others are located on IDOT property. These are at the Turtle Creek rest area on Interstate 39 and Interstate 90 southwest of South Beloit and the Willow Creek Rest Area on Interstate 39 in Lee County.
During World War II, the Blue Star became a marker for sons and daughters who were serving in the armed forces. The Blue Star was seen on flags and banners in homes as well as in churches and businesses.
The program started out as highway memorial markers and then memorial markers at locations such as
national cemeteries, parks, veterans’ facilities and gardens.
The term Blue Star has come into use as a reference to having a family member in active service, and the Gold Star refers to the loss of a family member in military service.
The Silver Star is used to represent those discharged from service because of wounds.

Festival runs through June 18; activities for all ages to be offered
POLO – The 57th Polo Town & Country Days is featuring new and returning activities for all ages.
The festival started Wednesday, June 14, and is set to run through Sunday, June 18, in downtown Polo.
“It’s hard to find events in small towns that are thriving,” said Joey Kochsmeier, Town & Country Days Committee first vice president. “If the community wants to keep things going like this, then it really needs to be supported.”
Megapasses for the carnival are $60, Kochsmeier said. Single-day passes will be available for $25 Friday and Sunday, he said.
“We’re lucky to have the carnival come to town when we’re so small,” Kochsmeier
said. “There’s not many communities that can say they throw their own carnivals like we can.”
On Friday and Saturday, there will be an ax-throwing trailer open from noon to 8 p.m., hosted by Hauling Axe 815.
“That seems to be big with people right now, so people can participate in that if they choose to,” Kochsmeier said.
New this year will be dinner under the festival tent from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, he said. Families will be able to enjoy live entertainment and dinner in the shade.
On Friday, there will be the P&C Little Rascals Petting Zoo outside the festival tent from 1 to 3 p.m.
The Father’s Day Grande Parade starts at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by the band Just 4 Fun playing live in the festival tent at 1:30 p.m., Kochsmeier said.

MORRIS, IL –
Robert “Bob” Noel Bennett, age 83, passed away on June 8, 2023 at KSB Hospital surrounded by his family.
Bob was born on February 19, 1940 in Chicago, IL, the son of Joseph and Mary (McCabe) Bennett.
Bob graduated from Providence St. Mel High School in 1958, was in the Army from 1958-1960 and graduated from DeVry Tech in 1964 with an Associate’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. On June 8, 1963, Bob married the love of his life, Carol Sylvester, at St. Pascal Church, Chicago, IL.

Lloyd V. DeVries, 102, of Shannon, Illinois completed his long earthly journey, Tuesday June 6, 2023 at FHN in Freeport, IL. He was born September 23, 1920, near Harper, IL to Lewis and Carrie (DeWall) DeVries. He attended country school and Shannon High School. On December 18, 1945, he married Gladys Swalve at Forreston Grove Presbyterian Church. In March of 1946, they moved to the home farm near Shannon where he lived the remainder of his life, and earned a living as a dairy, hog, and crop farmer. Until her passing, they celebrated 65 years together. They improved and expanded the farming operation as they witnessed remarkable inventions and innovations. He enjoyed working with his family and neighbors, first threshing and later baling, and chopping silage, picking ear corn and later combining shelled corn. He finally retired from harvesting in 2020, doubting he could climb the ladder to get into the cab. He returned in 2021, to harvest his neighbor’s corn, planted with a 6-row planter with his 6-row corn head, resulting in a satisfying 258 bushels per acre. He did continue
community. During this time, he worked at Kable Printing from 1964 to 1971 as an electrician while volunteering for the Mt. Morris Fire Department. He then joined the Schaumburg Fire Department in 1971 until he retired in 1994 as a Lieutenant. Memberships include the Sunset Golf Course (board member for 16 years), Mt. Morris Moose Lodge, VFW, and the American Legion.
So, who was Bob Bennett? He was an excellent handyman, could fix anything, and knew electrical and plumbing like the back of his hand. (If God is a carpenter, he’s about to get a lesson.) He owned a tool for every need and sometimes duplicates. But if you borrow a tool, don’t put it back in the wrong spot! Everything has its place even inside the house. Did you know he used to drag race at the Byron Dragway in his 1964 light blue Chevy Nova? He could even steer with his knees! Boy, how things have changed. He could be seen cruising the town in his car or in his “jazzed up” golf cart at the same speed in both … SLOOOOOW! Bob was always buying or selling vehicles, so much so we’ve lost count on how many he owned over the years. One of his mottos was “Everything’s for sale.”

He was a member of Forreston Grove Presbyterian Church where he was ordained a ruling elder in 1956, a member of Carroll County Farm Bureau, serving on the FS board, as well as a member of Holstein Association. He is survived by: daughter, Lois Graff of Casper, WY, son, Larry DeVries of Shannon, four grandchildren: Mark (Cheryl) Graff, and Greg (Heidi) Graff of Casper, WY, Jill Graff of Douglas, WY, Eric (Josie Heath) Graff of Boise, ID, and great grandson Jason. Oh and, have you experienced his mad dance moves? Guaranteed trip to the chiropractor the next day.
Sunset Golf Course will miss his wealth of knowledge and “strong suggestions” on every aspect of its business. He could remember how he wired the electricity in the golf cart barn, how the irrigation system functioned, the history of the equipment, and on and on.
Not only did he love playing poker and golf, his daily routine meant a visit to the Peppermill at 4:30pm SHARP every day, parking in HIS spot, and sitting in HIS seat at the bar. Bob may have been a man of few words but he was always listening. When he did speak it was brief, intentional, and you grasped the message.

BAILEYVILLE – The Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information about a police impersonator who stopped a female motorist in rural Baileyville, north of Forreston, on May 30.
The motorist was stopped in the area of South Baileyville and East German Valley roads about 6:20 a.m., according to a Stateline Area Crime Stoppers post. The female motorist was told she was being stopped for “almost speeding” and for a registration light infraction, despite the fact that the daylight conditions at the time of the stop would have made it impossible to observe the lighting infraction.
During the course of the stop, the suspect asked for the motorist’s driver’s license and insurance information, and returned both documents after briefly reviewing them at the driver’s window, according to the post.
The suspect is a heavy-set white
male appearing to be 30 to 40 years old who is 5-foot, 10-inches to 6-foot tall with short, dark hair, a thick, dark-colored mustache and bushy eyebrows, Crime Stoppers reported.
The suspect vehicle is a white SUV with a yellow stripe on the side, a black brush guard mounted on the front of the vehicle and a light bar mounted on top in a manner in which it extends past both front doors, according to the post.
The light bar was not activated at the time of the stop; however, red and blue lights mounted on the front grill of the suspect vehicle were activated, according to Crime Stoppers.
If anyone has any information on this case, they should contact the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office or Stateline Area Crime Stoppers.
Tips can be submitted to Stateline Area Crime Stoppers by phone by calling 1-866-TIPS NOW, through the Stateline Area Crime Stoppers “P3 Tips” mobile phone app, or online at statelineareacrimestoppers.com.
