N.Y. eyes testing for texting in car crashes

ALBANY, N.Y. – Ben Lieberman just wanted to find out what may have caused the head-on collision that killed his 19-year-old son, Evan, on a highway north of New York City. It took a lawsuit and six months in court to get the cellphone records showing the driver of the car his son was in had been texting behind the wheel.

Lieberman doesn’t believe getting that information should be so hard.

He’s channeling his grief over the 2011 accident into a proposal that would allow police at accident scenes in New York to immediately examine drivers’ cellphones with a device to determine if they’d been tapping, swiping or clicking.

It’s been called a Breathalyzer for texting.

“You think people are already looking at phones and it just doesn’t happen,” said Lieberman, who is partnering with the Israel-based tech company Cellebrite to develop the plug-in device that’s been nicknamed the “textalyzer.”

The idea already faces obstacles from constitutional and privacy advocates who are quick to note that police need the owner’s consent and a warrant to get cellphone records. They’re also concerned such technology would be used to access all of the personal information people may have on their cellphones.

tense for gobbling up people’s private cellphone information, and we know that cellphones typically contain our entire lives,” said New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman, who is no relation to Ben Lieberman.

At least 46 states have laws barring texting while driving and 14 ban all hand-held devices, but some safety advocates say more needs to be done to enforce the laws.

Deborah Hersman, the CEO of the National Safety Council and a supporter of the “textalyzer” legislation, noted that in 2016, 40,000 people died on the road, a 14 percent jump from 2014 and the biggest two-year jump in 50 years.

“There can’t be a more compelling reason than life or death for saying why we should have access to this information,” Hersman said.

Cellebrite said its technology, which is about nine months away from being finished, sidesteps privacy concerns because it’s designed only to determine usage, not access data. Company officials said the device would only be able to tell if someone physically clicked or swiped the phone during the time of the accident, and then investigators could use that to determine whether they should get a warrant for more detailed information.

“For this device, the whole purpose is not to get any data,” said Jim Grady, the chief executive officer of Cellebrite USA. “So no, police won’t be able to, unless they rewrite our code.”

kelyons@shawmedia.com MARENGO – Police spent Sunday investigating an officer-related shooting that occurred Saturday evening, when a teen was shot after allegedly pointing a firearm at a veteran Marengo police officer.

Crime scene tape surrounded a ranch home at 709 E. Prairie St. on Sunday morning, and McHenry County Sheriff’s squad cars blocked off the residential street as investigators took photographs and collected evidence.

Marengo police released a statement Sunday, but it did not mention the age or condition of the juvenile other than to say that he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Law enforcement sources said later Sunday that the juvenile was 16 years old and was expected to be released from the hospital as early as Sunday.

Police cordoned off a home in the 700 block of Prairie Street in Marengo, where an officer-involved shooting occurred Saturday night.

A law enforcement source also said the teen was wanted on juvenile warrants, but the source did not know the nature of the charges.

The statement said that police were responding to “suspicious ac-

tivity” just after 11 p.m. in the 800 block of East Prairie Street before the shooting occurred. The home is less than a mile east of the Marengo Police Department.

“Initial reports indicate that

upon arrival, officers were confronted by a juvenile armed with a firearm,” the statement said.

Marengo Police Chief Richard Solarz said police would release more details about the incident on Monday, but he said police were not responding to a domestic call or a party.

Solarz said the officer who fired the weapon was not injured and is on administrative leave, which is normal department policy after an officer-involved shooting.

The officer, who was not named, has been with the department for 10 years.

According to a Marengo Fire Rescue Squad radio call at 11:16 p.m., fire district personnel were called to 709 E. Prairie St. in response to a report of a male subject who had been shot in the abdomen. The radio report said officers were at the scene.

McHENRY – The city of McHenry, in partnership with the McHenry Township Fire Protection District, is planning to build a Safety Town to teach young children safe practices at home, school and within the community.

The miniature town’s construction will start Friday on the Municipal Center campus, adjacent to the McHenry Zone Skate and Bike Park, 330 Knox Drive. Construction is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the help of city

Most of today’s cars come with long-life coolant.

This coolant has better additives and it definitely protects longer than the old green ethylene glycol.

Still, Douglas McAllister, owner of Douglas Automotive, is concerned that with less frequent oil changes, extended coolants and spark plugs, that such intermittent changes will be misconstrued by the car owner as no maintenance being required, or the maintenance services will be forgotten about completely.

A client who has extended the life of antifreeze by adding rust inhibitor every-other year asked McAllister if such was a wise move.

“You probably will get a whole bunch of different answers from professionals in the business, and none of them would be wrong,” McAllister said. “Over time, coolant will turn acidic and the additives start to wear out, which can cause gaskets and other components to deteriorate.”

If you have an older car that is using regular coolant, McAllister recommends flushing it out and changing it every-other year, or about 30,000 miles. With a long-life coolant you can at least double it and maybe a little longer, depending on how the coolant looks.

Can the coolant go to 100,000 miles?

Maybe, but why push it to the limit? The savings does not outweigh the possible wear and expense this can cause.

“You can also test the coolant to make sure it is not acidic and that it still protects against freezing,” McAllister said. “This can be done using a special dip strip from the auto parts store.”

Lastly, anytime you need to change a component, like a hose or a water pump, you will be losing a good amount of coolant anyway.

“This repair is a great opportunity to change out all the coolant,” he said. “It is very probable such a repair will time out with the change interval anyway.”

“My whole family has pre-existing conditions,” said Lea Grover of Cary.

“My husband’s care costs over $35,000 a month. … My daughter with asthma will lose coverage. My daughter with a spinal cord [defect] will lose coverage.

My premature daughter on the autism spectrum will lose coverage. I – a sexual assault survivor – will lose coverage.”

Grover is one of many who joined protests this week across Illinois in an effort to express disapproval to local legislators who voted to approval the controversial American Health Care Act, which could replace the Affordable Care Act. She attended a protest outside U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam’s Barrington office Saturday, holding a large sign showing a photo of her family.

woman for the Illinois Health and Hospital Association.

“We [currently] have serious concerns about the harm it could cause to patients,” she said. “But at this point, we are waiting to see what the Senate does and what revisions it makes. That won’t be released until May 22, and once that comes back, we will have a better idea of what the true impact will be.”

Black Jack’s legacy explored in program LOCAL HISTORY Kurt Begalka

Few, if any, soldiers’ careers compare to the depth and breadth of that compiled by Gen. John L. “Black Jack” Pershing.

Pershing was commanding the U.S. Military Academy color guard when President Ulysses S. Grant’s funeral train crossed the Hudson River.

He crossed into Mexico in 1916 with a force of nearly 10,000 men in pursuit of revolutionary Pancho Villa. And during the pivotal 1918 Meuse-Argonne Offensive of World War I, Pershing’s redeployment of about 600,000 American soldiers to the forests of the Argonne led directly to Germany’s request for an armistice.

Years later, during a December 1922 speech before the Women’s Republican Club of Massachusetts in Boston, Pershing predicted a new and deadlier war was coming.

“As we look out upon the world today, we find complicated situations in Middle Europe, in the Near East and in the Orient,” he said. “The nations lately at war seem ready to fly at each others’ throats, and a war more terrible than the last is openly predicted. Suspicion, jealousy and hatred are followed by repudiation, calumny and threat of war. It is not inconceivable that America might again take up arms in defense of the principles of liberty and justice, which inspired our action in 1917. It would be folly now to revert to our proverbial listlessness.”

“He believed in keeping the country strong and vigilant,” local historian Ed O’Brien said. “The best way to prevent a war is to train to fight the next one.”

After Pershing’s graduation from West Point, the Missouri native entered the Army and served with distinction until 1924, when the “rules of engagement” demanded retirement. The previous night, the 64-year-old war hero had become the first chief of staff to radio address, coast to coast, to an audience estimated to be 25 million.

In a famous speech calling on Americans to support troops of the American Expeditionary Forces, Pershing underscored the enormity of the task confronting the Yanks.

“Three thousand miles from home, an American Army is fighting for you,” Pershing said. “Everything you hold worthwhile is at stake.”

GOOD VISION AND DRIVING SAFETY It is important that drivers know that age-related eye diseases and refractive errors can narrow their range of vision, increase their sensitivity to glare, and restrict light’s ability to reach the retina. Any of these symptoms can compromise driving ability and impede highway safety. One study illustrating these potential dangers involved licensed adult drivers who wore lenses that simulated refractive blur and cataracts. Researchers found that the study’s participants with simulated blurred vision could only recognize a pedestrian 52% of the time; those with simulated cataracts could only do so 30% of the time. Drivers with normal vision recognized pedestrians at distances that averaged 3.6 times farther than drivers with blurred vision and 5.5 times farther than drivers with cataracts.

Americans vented similar frustrations this past week in Republican districts crucial to GOP majority control of the House, sounding off about health care and President Donald Trump’s abrupt firing of FBI Director James Comey. Democrats see in these displays evidence of the enthusiasm necessary for them to break the GOP’s monopoly control of Washington in next year’s midterm elections.

ISU student fights human trafficking

NORMAL – An Illinois State University computer science major has been working with a Nebraska-based initiative to fight human trafficking.

The Pantagraph reported that Matt Price has been doing programming work for the Human Trafficking Initiative for about 1½ years.

His sister, Crysta Price, started working on the issue five years ago as a research project at Creighton University in Omaha.

She is now co-director of the initiative, which is the research arm of the Nebraska Human Trafficking Task Force.

Crysta focuses on data science while Price is responsible for programming that scans online data.

Saturday’s incident began when Salters grabbed the officer’s gun at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva and took two nurses as hostages. After negotiations broke down, a SWAT team moved in, and the officer shot Salters about 5 p.m.

Man charged in robbery on Chicago-area expressway

CHICAGO – A suburban Chicago man suspected of taking part in the robbery of a man by deliberately crashing into his car and then stealing $120 from him at gunpoint has been arrested.

The Chicago Tribune reported that 55-year-old Peter Ely of Mount Prospect appeared in court on Saturday. A judge ordered him held in lieu of $2 million bail.

The robbery occurred on Jan. 6 , 2016.

Authorities said a man was driving on Interstate 90 near Bryn Mawr when a van struck his vehicle from behind. They allege that Ely climbed from the van, put a gun to the driver’s head and took the money.

Torch-wielding group protests statue removal

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A group that included a well-known white nationalist carried torches and chanted “you will not replace us” at a weekend protest in Virginia over plans to remove a monument of a Confederate general.

The protesters on Saturday evening called on officials to halt the removal of a Gen. Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville and were swiftly condemned by the city’s mayor, who said the event appeared to hearken “back to the days of the KKK,” the Daily Progress newspaper reported.

N. Korea: New long-range missile can carry heavy nuke

The Associated Press SEOUL, South Korea – North Korea said Monday the missile it launched over the weekend was a new type of long-range ballistic rocket that can carry a heavy nuclear warhead.

North Korean propaganda must be considered with wariness, but if confirmed, the claim marks another big step forward in the country’s escalating efforts to field a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

Outside experts don’t believe the North can do that yet, but each new test pushes them closer to the goal.

The launch Sunday is an immediate challenge to South Korea’s new leader, a liberal elected just five days earlier who expressed a desire to reach out to North Korea. The country’s push to boost its weapons program also makes it one of the Trump administration’s most urgent foreign policy worries.

The missile flew for half an hour and reached an unusually high altitude before landing in the Sea of Japan, the South Korean, Japanese and U.S. militaries said. Tokyo said the flight pattern could indicate a new type of missile.

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency called the missile a “new ground-toground medium long-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12” that’s “capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead.” Leader Kim Jong Un was said to have witnessed the test and “hugged officials in the field of rocket research, saying that they worked hard to achieve a great thing,” according to KCNA. The launch jeopardizes new South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s willingness to talk to the North, and came as U.S., Japanese and Eu-

ropean navies gather for joint war games in the Pacific.

“The president expressed deep regret over the fact that this reckless provocation ... occurred just days after a new government was launched in South Korea,” senior presidential secretary Yoon Young-chan said. “The president said we are leaving open the possibility of dialogue with North Korea, but we should sternly deal with a provocation to prevent North Korea from miscalculating.”

Moon, South Korea’s first liberal leader in nearly a decade, said as he took his oath of office last week that he’d be willing to visit the North if the circumstances were right.

The U.N. Security Council will hold closed consultations about the launch on Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.N. Mission for Uruguay, which holds the council presidency this month.

Although Trump has said he’d be “honored” to talk with leader Kim Jong Un under favorable conditions, Haley seemed to rule out the possibility. “Having a missile test is not the way to sit down with the president, because he’s absolutely not going to do it,” she told ABC.

LONDON – Employees booting up computers at work Monday could see red as they discover they’re victims of a global “ransomware” cyberattack that has created chaos in 150 countries and could wreak even greater havoc as more malicious variations appear.

As a loose global network of cybersecurity experts fought the ransomware hackers, officials and experts on Sunday urged organizations and companies to update older Microsoft operating systems immediately to ensure they aren’t vulnerable to a second, more powerful version of the software – or to future versions that can’t be stopped.

The initial attack, known as “WannaCry,” paralyzed computers that run Britain’s hospital network, Germany’s

national railway and scores of other companies and government agencies worldwide in what was believed to be the biggest online extortion scheme ever recorded.

Microsoft took aim at the U.S. government for “stockpiling” software code that was used by unknown hackers to launch the attacks. The hackers exploited software code from the National Security Agency that leaked online.

The company’s top lawyer said the government should report weaknesses they discover to software companies rather than seek to exploit them.

“An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the U.S. military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen,” attorney Brad Smith wrote on Microsoft’s blog.

New variants of the rapidly replicating worm were discovered Sunday and one did not include the so-called kill

switch that allowed researchers to interrupt its spread Friday by diverting it to a dead end on the internet.

Ryan Kalember, senior vice president at Proofpoint Inc. which helped stop its spread, said the version without a kill switch was able to spread but was benign because it contained a flaw that wouldn’t allow it to take over a computer and demand ransom to unlock files.

However, he said it’s only a matter of time before a malevolent version exists.

“I still expect another to pop up and be fully operational,” Kalember said.

“We haven’t fully dodged this bullet at all until we’re patched against the vulnerability itself.”

The attack held users hostage by freezing their computers, popping up a red screen with the words, “Oops, your files have been encrypted!” and demanding money through online bitcoin payment – $300 at first, rising to $600 be-

fore it destroys files hours later.

The ransomware attack was particularly malicious, because if just one person in an organization clicked on an infected attachment or bad link, all the computers in a network would be infected, said Vikram Thakur, technical director of Symantec Security Response.

“That’s what makes this more troubling than ransomware was a week ago,” Thakur said.

It hit 200,000 victims across the world since Friday and is seen as an “escalating threat,” said Rob Wainwright, the head of Europol, Europe’s policing agency.

“The numbers are still going up,” Wainwright said. “We’ve seen that the slowdown of the infection rate over Friday night, after a temporary fix around it, has now been overcome by a second variation the criminals have released.”

WASHINGTON – American democracy is “under assault” on separate fronts from President Donald Trump and Russia, the former U.S. intelligence chief warned Sunday, expressing dismay over the abrupt firing of FBI director James Comey amid a probe into Moscow’s meddling in U.S. elections and possible ties with the Trump campaign.

As Trump works to fast-track Comey’s successor, lawmakers from both parties urged him to steer clear of any politicians for the job and say he must “clean up the mess that he mostly created.”

“I think, in many ways, our institutions are under assault, both externally – and that’s the big news here, is the Russian interference in our election system,” said James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence. “I think as well our institutions are under assault internally.”

When he was asked, “Internally, from the president?” Clapper said, “Exactly.”

Clapper spoke after Trump’s sudden firing of Comey last week, which drew sharp criticism because it came amid the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. Clapper said America’s founding fathers had created three co-equal branches of government with checks and balances, but with Trump as president, that was now “eroding.”

Garland never got a hearing due to Republican obstruction, and the high court vacancy was filled last month by Neil Gorsuch.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said the new FBI director should be someone “not of partisan background” with “great experience” and “courage.” Declining comment on a Garland nomination, Schumer left open the possibility that Democrats might withdraw support for a new FBI director unless the Justice Department names a special prosecutor. Under Senate rules, Republicans could still confirm an FBI director with 51 votes. Republicans hold 52 seats in the chamber to Democrats’ 48.

A suicide at age 8? Rare, but not unheard of

NEW YORK – The death was startling even to the coroner: a boy only 8 years old apparently killing himself in his Cincinnati bedroom.

Now Gabriel Taye’s January death is being re-examined, after it emerged that he was bullied and knocked unconscious at school two days before he died.

Hamilton County Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco’s office has ruled Gabriel’s death a suicide, but she said last week that she was reopening the investigation to re-examine the boy’s injuries and whether there were contributing factors to his death.

“It was very hard for me to believe that an 8-year-old would even know what it means to commit suicide,” Sammarco said.

“It’s possible, but at this young age,

it’s very uncommon,” Kraus said. Even if a child has an idea of suicide, “many kids this young really don’t conceptualize the permanency of what they’re doing and what could happen.”

Experts stress that at any age, suicide is a complex decision that often reflects a combination of life events and psychiatric problems, whether diagnosed or not.

Warning signs can be harder to read in young children than older people, said Dr. Alec Miller, chief of child and adolescent psychology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

But while kids might not have the vocabulary to discuss depression, it still might show up, perhaps as a change in behavior or complaints about aches or fatigue with no physical explanation, Kraus notes.

Gabriel had no history of mental health issues, said Carla Leader, a lawyer for his mother, Cornelia Reynolds.

People who knew him describe him as a happy-go-lucky kid – “a very loving little boy who always had a smile on his face and would bring a smile to your face,” said Carolyn Emery, whose children went to school with him.

Gabriel was at school Jan. 24 when, as seen on a choppy surveillance video the Cincinnati Public Schools system released Friday, he apparently tried to shake hands with a boy who had hit another child. Attorneys for Gabriel’s mother said the boy pushed Gabriel into a wall, knocking him unconscious.

GOP marks success by reversing Obama rules

WASHINGTON – Final score: Republicans 14, Barack Obama’s last-minute regulations, one.

Congressional Republicans anxious to show voters they can get something done are hailing their reversal of more than a dozen Obama-era regulations on guns, the internet and the environment.

Over a few months, lawmakers used an obscure legislative rule to ram through changes that will have far-reaching implications for the coal industry, broadband customers, hunters and women seeking health care at Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.

The deadline for scuttling the rules that Democrat Obama imposed during his final months in office was last Thursday. The 1996 Congressional Review Act had given Republicans the power to make the changes with a simple majority, within a set time.

While the rest of Washington focused on the furor over President Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey, Republicans were celebrating their effort to reverse the rules, arguing that it would boost the economy and make it easier for businesses to operate.

“I am almost speechless when I think about the success,” said Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla.

Senators pointed out that Congress had only once before used the legislative tools stemming from the Congressional Review Act to quash a regula-

tion – until this year. In all, the GOP was able to reverse 14 regulations that had or will get Trump’s signature.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader in the Senate, argued that overturning rules passed at the end of the Obama administration hardly constituted an agenda.

“The fact that they are bragging about these highlights how little else they have accomplished legislatively,” Schumer said.

Republicans have a long way to go in their efforts to repeal and replace the health care law, cut taxes and boost infrastructure spending, all Trump priorities. Still, the GOP made clear soon after election victories in November that one of the first orders of business would be to go after Obama administration rules.

The effort has had strong backing from business groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Rifle Association and prominent anti-abortion groups – all key constituencies that generally back Republican candidates. The Chamber endorsed eight of the 14 repeal resolutions that Congress passed. One still awaits the president’s signature before it can become law.

Republicans reversed Obama rules that enhanced protections for waterways near coal mines, required contractors to disclose violation of 14 federal labor laws for the previous three years when bidding on contracts and imposed tight restrictions on what broadband companies such as Verizon, AT&T and Comcast could do with their customers’ personal data.

A chilling message

We will be the first to acknowledge that reporters can be persistent - sometimes even obnoxious - in asking questions. But that, at least in the United States, has not generally been considered a crime. So it’s more than a little troubling that a reporter in West Virginia was handcuffed, placed under arrest and put in jail after trying to ask a question of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

The events unfolded Tuesday in the State Capitol in Charleston when Dan Heyman, a journalist with Public News Service, pestered Price as he walked through a hallway with questions about whether domestic violence would be considered a preexisting condition under the health-care legislation passed last week by the House to replace the Affordable Care Act. “You refuse to answer? Tell me no comment,” Heyman said moments before officers of the West Virginia Division of Protective Services, also known as the Capitol Police, pulled him aside and arrested him.

Heyman was charged with a misdemeanor count of willful disruption of state government processes.

The complaint alleges he was “aggressively breaching” the Secret Service agents who were with Price and White House adviser Kellyanne Conway on their listening tour about efforts to fight opioid addiction.

A spokesman for the Capitol Police insisted the arrest was not about his questions but his physical actions.

Why then did the complaint note “the defendant was causing a disturbance by yelling questions at Ms. Conway and Secretary Price”? Heyman, 54, regularly covers the Capitol. He had been cleared through security to enter the building and was displaying his credentials. He says his only physical action was to hold out his phone to record Price. Heyman’s lawyer observed at a news conference Tuesday night, “I’ve never had a client get arrested for talking too loud or anything similar to that.”

We would like to think Heyman’s arrest was simply an overreaction - or misunderstanding - by police unaccustomed to press scrums that have become routine in news coverage. We would have hoped that Price and Conway would have thanked the police for their devotion but made clear that no reporter should be arrested for doing his job. No such luck: On Wednesday, Price commended police and justified their actions since “that gentleman was not in a press conference.” Also on display Wednesday was President Donald Trump’s disdain for America’s independent press as he allowed Russian media but not the American press into his Oval Office meeting with Russian officials.

Whatever the outcome of charges against Heyman – and we would urge West Virginia officials to use some common sense and drop them - a chilling message has been sent.

To the Editor: A couple of days ago, I went shopping, stopping first at Joseph’s, then at the dollar store in Crystal Lake.

After I arrived at the dollar store, I noticed my wallet was missing. I went back to Joseph’s and it was not there. I retraced my steps back to the dollar store and did not find it on the ground anywhere. A man’s wallet, like a lady’s purse, contains the critical items of daily life activity – cash, identification information, credit cards. It also contains many personal items. I went into full panic mode as I considered what I had to do to replace items and block use. Before I left the store, I decided to ask the cashiers if anyone had turned in a wallet. One of them said “yes” and proceeded to show me my wallet – intact. She said a customer found it just inside the store and turned it in.

We live in a world that in many ways is no longer kind and considerate of others. There is a growing feeling of intolerance. There also is a greater attitude of aggressiveness among people. Thankfully, the person who found my wallet showed kindness and consideration. It gives me a renewed sense of hope that people are basically good and decent. Whoever that person was, I would like to say “thank you.”

Bad health-care bill

To the Editor: With the pressure on, I keep watching how Rep.

Hultgren responds to his constituents. He will only take appointments at his McHenry office with people he knows to be his supporters. When his constituents request a town hall meeting, he responds with an event in which he answers submitted questions with no chance for a response.

Rep. Hultgren voted for the Financial Choice Act which rolls back consumer protections and puts us back in the same spot before the financial crisis. Now, Rep. Hultgren votes for Trumpcare. Democrats did not get a copy of the legislation and amendments, and it was pushed through without a Congressional budget office report. How can you vote on a bill without knowing what it costs and how many people it will affect?

The last CBO report on March 13, 2017, reported Trumpcare would reduce Medicaid by 880 million, and 24 million would lose their insurance. There is a claim that pre-existing conditions are covered in Trumpcare and that is partly true. Basically, individual states will be allowed to charge super high rates for those people.

What I do know is that with something so personal and important to our families and ourselves, Hultgren cannot even take the time for honest debate and discovery or reach out to his constituents. No major medical organization supported this bill. We all want good health care, and people shouldn’t have to choose if they can afford to live.

Sergei Lavrov’s official job is foreign minister of Russia, but his visit to Washington Wednesday won’t be remembered for any diplomatic breakthrough – just for Lavrov’s dripping irony and skill at provoking adversaries. Lavrov’s style, which mirrors that of his boss, Vladimir Putin, is often criticized as unfit for a diplomat. But I’d argue that Lavrov knows exactly what he’s doing and that the medium is the message here.

In Washington, Lavrov feigned astonishment for a U.S. reporter who asked about Tuesday’s firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey: “Was he fired? You’re kidding! You’re kidding!” The Russian foreign ministry gleefully tweeted out the video.

He also smuggled a photographer from the state-owned news agency, TASS, into his meeting with President Donald Trump as his official photographer. TASS immediately published photos of Trump beaming at his Russian visitors, Lavrov and Ambassador Sergei Kislyak, who are obviously delighted by the reception. With the U.S. press kept out, these happy photos from their Russian propaganda source created an uproar.

Sarcasm, provocation, a desire to throw interlocutors off balance always bubble just below the surface of Lavrov’s communications. He regularly stuns Western conversation partners with crude or offensive comments.

At a recent meeting of North Atlantic Treaty Organization ministers, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson quipped, “You cannot tango with Lavrov because he’s not allowed to dance that one.” He meant that President Vladimir Putin determined policy in Russia and Lavrov wouldn’t be authorized to make deals. “My mother used to tell me: Always be a good boy, don’t ever dance with other boys,” the Russian foreign minister responded.

In this, Lavrov’s style mirrors that of his boss. In 2006, Putin memorably told Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to say hi to then-President Moshe Katsav, accused of raping and sexually harassing women: “He turned out to be a strong man, raped 10 women. I never would have expected it of him. He has surprised us all, we all envy him.” The Kremlin, whose communication was a little more self-conscious back then, had to explain that Putin didn’t condone rape and that his words were meant as a hard-to-translate joke.

Putin’s crude jokes are often written off as a product of his childhood on the streets of St. Petersburg. He’s only as polished as an intelligence officer who served in the former East Germany needed to be. Lavrov, however, is a highly professional diplomat. He knows the protocol, speaks three languages besides Russian, and is sophisticated in his tastes and interests. Even his verse, while not touched by genius, is competent and far less embarrassing than the poetic efforts of many other Russian officials.

Lavrov knows well how his remarks sound to Western ears. He is also aware that sarcasm and taunts are often considered unprofessional and seen as a sign of bad manners in the English-speaking world, especially in the U.S. And yet he keeps saying things that would have gotten any Western diplomat fired, playing out barbed comedy routines and engaging in practical jokes worthy of a college student.

His style is the message: Russians won’t play by others’ rules, it says. But this isn’t about touting Russia’s size and its nuclear arsenal; it’s more of a mischievous enticement, a dare.

VIEWS Leonid Bershidsky Putin’s Russia has allied itself with Western populist forces, whose stand against political correctness and the constant self-censorship that comes with it constitutes a strong voter appeal. During the election campaign in the U.S. last year, I was told many times that Trump’s penchant for uncensored speech was his most attractive quality. The Dutch say the same of Geert Wilders, the French of Marine Le Pen. The freedom to say whatever one wants without wondering if it could be construed as misogynist, racist, homophobic or offensive in a myriad other ways is, to many voters, a bonus.

Post-Soviet Russians have relished their freedom to say whatever they want, to be sarcastic, crude and informal, to be provocative and thus project confidence. Cursing in the workplace, a lack of respect for propriety and protocol, an absence of linguistic and ideological constraints were prizes to a society that had just cast off the Communist straitjacket.

In his 2014 book, “After Newspeak: Language Culture and Politics in Russia from Gorbachev to Putin,” Michael Gorham wrote, “One obvious reason for post-Soviet reticence toward Western notions of political correctness is that the Soviet era featured a state-sponsored form of PC that was both ubiquitous and hypertrophied.

The well-documented clichéd, wooden language of official speeches, documents and newspapers assumed such a degree of dominance that it came to symbolize in the Gorbachev-era revolts against that system, all that was wrong with it.”

In recent years, a backlash to this unfettered freedom has developed in Russia. The advent of a Western corporate culture and many intellectuals’ admiration of sanitized Western discourse have constituted one line of attack. Russian Orthodox conservatives attacked from the opposite flank.

Stringent laws weed out previously copious profanity from film and theatre. Religion has become a dangerous conversation subject. Public discourse has turned more staid.

Lavrov has fun making his pitch for a politically incorrect Russia – the Russian embassy in the U.K. put up a photo of Darth Vader taking a selfie with the sardonic caption “Come to our side – follow us on twitter on #StarWarsDay” – and it’s having an effect. Trolled by official Russian accounts, Western diplomats have started responding in kind.

New kinds of political correctness are developing in Russia, both on the pro-Putin and the anti-Putin side. Yet for export, so to speak, Lavrov is still able to offer Russia’s post-Soviet spontaneity and contempt for rules. What other foreign minister would allow his department’s hotline to play an English-language answering machine message asking callers to press three for election interference? Lavrov can; that’s his way of selling Russia as a freer country than its Western adversaries.

My big problem with Lavrov isn’t that he’s eccentric and prone to stretching the limits of propriety in the early post-Soviet style. It’s that this display of inner freedom is disingenuous and cynical. The policy behind this facade is one of lies and ruthlessness. It’s hard to enjoy Lavrov’s sense of humor with that in mind.

24 Understanding risk factors for macular degeneration Dear Doctor: I was recently diagnosed with wet macular degeneration and am now receiving periodic injections for the disease. What causes it? Are there any risk factors, such as drugs or diet?

Dear Reader: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of adult blindness in industrialized countries. AMD causes damage to the central portion of the retina, leading to a loss of central (foveal) vision. Central vision is necessary to see those details that allow people to read, drive, watch TV and perform many of the activities of daily living.

There are two types of AMD, a dry type and a wet type. Each causes a change in the retina, which consists of layers of cells in the back of your eye. For those who remember using a camera with film, the retina is like the film upon which images are exposed.

Dry AMD is much more common than wet AMD, constituting 85 to 90 percent of all cases. There has been no single cause established for dry AMD, which occurs when a mixture of protein and fat (called drusen) builds up behind the retinal layers. Dry AMD leads to a slow progression of vision loss over many years. People with dry AMD in both eyes have a 1 to 4.7 percent yearly risk of developing wet AMD. As for wet AMD, it’s caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels behind the retina.

These blood vessels leak, causing both fluid and blood to pool behind the retina. I regret to say without treatment, the prognosis is not good. The condition can lead to rapid vision loss, causing blindness within months or weeks. While wet AMD accounts for only 10 to 15 percent of all cases, it accounts for 80 percent of the blindness caused by AMD. The biggest risk factor for both types of AMD is age, with people ages 55 to 64 having a 0.2 percent risk of developing the condition, and those older than 84 having a 13.1 percent risk. ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley increases the risk of developing AMD by a factor of two to four, and the risk persists many years after stopping smoking. It also causes the degeneration to progress faster.

Other risk factors: Having a family history of early-onset or severe AMD and having had a previous stroke or heart attack. There may be an association between AMD and aspirin or blood pressure medications (especially beta-blockers and nitroglycerin), but as of now no causality has been defined.

Heavy alcohol consumption (more than three drinks a day) has been associated with early-onset AMD, but not with late-onset.

In regards to diet, one study followed the dietary habits of 2,525 patients with age-related eye disease. Those who adhered to a Mediterranean diet had a 26 percent reduced risk of developing advanced, severe macular degeneration. Mediterranean diets are high in nuts, fish, vegetables, fruits and whole grains and low in red meat, processed meats and saturated fats.

Antioxidant combinations that include vitamin C and vitamin E, as well as supplements of lutein with zinc, also have been linked to a decreased risk in progression of AMD. So it is possible that deficiencies in these substances may increase your risk.

People who want to decrease their risk factors for AMD should stop, or not start, smoking; they should avoid heavy alcohol use; and if their diet is high in saturated fat, they should consider switching to a Mediterranean diet.

tell the woman how hurt you feel after having befriended her all these years. Time is our most precious commodity. The more time you spend plotting retaliation, the more space this ungrateful woman is taking up in your head, and it’s not healthy – for you.

Once you have spoken to her and gotten this off your chest, go on with your life. Continue to see others in the group on an individual basis, if necessary. If they are real friends, I’m sure they’ll be glad to do that.

Dear Abby: I am a 34-year-old single mother (by choice) of a beautiful 3-year-old boy. Because of infertility problems, it took years for me to conceive. I love my son beyond measure and, when I’m not working, I’m usually shuttling him to extracurricular activities and making time after cooking and cleaning to play with him.

Because my world revolves around being a mom, I have a hard time participating in adult conversations without talking about my son and how proud and happy I am to be his mom.

I realize this can be irritating to others, and it has become frustrating for me.

I’m educated, opinionated and well-read, but I seem to have lost the ability to relate to other adults and make friends away from my role as a mother. However, because you want to expand your repertoire, broaden it by bringing up current events, which should give you plenty of fodder for conversation.

friend has decided she can no longer tolerate my husband. She feels he doesn’t “respect” her. This is far from the truth, in my mind. We have supported her emotionally and financially from time to time for many years. My husband does have a habit of making clunky jokes (anything for a laugh or to fill the void). But a real friend should see beyond that to the loving, supportive person he is at his core.

We are now banned from her social group.

Following West’s excellent lead, East’s demon defense stopped South from discarding a heart loser on dummy’s second high club.

Once declarer sees the 4-1 spade break, he should realize that he needs West to hold the diamond king. After taking trick four in his hand, South should cash the diamond ace and run the diamond queen.

When that wins, he continues with another diamond, ruffing out West’s king. Then declarer can draw trumps ending in his hand and claim.

Exceeding expectations

Starting rotation key in Crystal Lake South’s stellar run

shammond@shawmedia.com In an early April game, Crystal Lake South pitcher Andrew Engelking pitched 82⁄3 innings, allowing only one earned run, in a 10-inning win over McHenry. Engelking often starts the opener of the Fox Valley Conference’s three-game series and knows that a good start from him sets the tone for the series.

“That gives a team momentum,” Engelking said.

It’s no surprise a team that averages seven runs a game in FVC play sits tied at the top of the standings with Huntley. But the Gators do more than just hit.

South has pitched well enough to start the season 26-3, and the rotation is spearheaded by right-handers Engelking and Kyle Lang at the top.

“Our hitters know that our pitchers are going to give us the best chance to win games, and I think the trust is there,” South pitching coach Mark Tschappat said. “We’ve been down in a few games this year, and guys out of the pen have stepped up and helped and given our offense a chance to come back.”

A number of different pitchers have started in the third rotation spot, including Noah Tyrrell, Riley Tannhauser and Blake Kuffel.

“Our conference is stacked with so many dominant pitchers and guys that have signed Division I and throw 90plus,” Tschappat said. “Our guys just go out there and battle and hit spots and keep us in games. They’ve really exceeded all my expectations, for sure.”

Gators head coach Brian Bogda is quick to highlight the work of his pitching coach. Tschappat handles just about everything with the pitchers, including calling pitches from the dugout.

“He knows us well, and he knows all of our pitches and where we can locate them,” Lang said. “He has confidence in us and knows what pitch to throw in what situation.”

Lang, a junior, played on varsity as a sophomore. Bogda said his ability to go deep into games has improved.

Engelking, a senior who will play at St. Xavier University next year, also played varsity as a sophomore and has taken on a leadership role this year.

Bogda said Engelking is almost like having a fifth-year senior on the team.

“When there’s some adversity, he doesn’t seem to get too frazzled,” Bogda said. “Last year he’d be rattled, and we’d have to be looking to get somebody else in.”

Lang said he looks up to Engelking and that he follows the senior’s lead.

Both of them trust their defense, which

has been solid behind them.

Tschappat said Lang has stepped up this season. The South coaches figured he would be a top of the rotation starter, but he has been better than expected, as evidenced by a one-hit, complete-game shutout win over Huntley on Thursday.

“I feel like I’ve been throwing pretty well,” Lang said. “(I’ve been) keeping the ball low in the zone, going deep into games, trusting my defense.”

Each of the No. 3 options has had his day. Tyrrell threw a one-hit shutout a week ago against Hampshire and has not given up an earned run in his last 132⁄3 innings. Tannhauser threw a

complete-game shutout a day earlier against Crystal Lake Central. Kuffel threw a five-inning shutout against Prairie Ridge a few weeks ago.

The Gators feature 11 pitchers, six of whom are exclusively pitchers.

“What’s been nice about it is we really have had a chance to delve deeper into preparation and visualizing and executing pitches, those kind of things,” Tschappat said.

South is right in the thick of things in the FVC after splitting a pair with Huntley last week. The teams are tied with one head-to-head matchup remaining Monday. Both have four games remaining in conference play.

For the last year, the Prairie Ridge girls soccer team has been looking forward to this week, and the ones that they hope will come after.

A year ago, the Wolves were seconds away from reaching a sectional final, only to give up a late overtime goal and lose their sectional semifinal on penalty kicks to the eventual Class 2A state runner-up, Deerfield.

Most of the core from that team is back, bolstered by some new additions, and the Wolves ran up a 13-2 regular-season record, finishing second in the Fox Valley Conference. Prairie Ridge coach Andre Watson said that the way last season ended has been a motivation all season.

“Absolutely, they were ready from day one to get back to playing and to get back to the playoffs,” Watson said. “They definitely have unfinished business.

That has been a theme the entire season, that they left something on the table last year and that this year they are so focused right now, very focused on being successful in the postseason.”

The Wolves finally get to begin that mission this week as the 2A and 3A girls soccer postseason gets underway with regional semifinals Tuesday and Wednesday. Prairie Ridge opens the postseason Tuesday against Chicago Mather.

Eight-run eighth propels Sox past Padres

CHICAGO – You don’t always have to hit it far to hit it effectively in baseball.

But you do always have to keep your head in the game.

An eight-run eighth inning by the White Sox Sunday proved that, with the biggest “hit” in the 9-3 victory over San Diego arguably a pop-up out to first that scored Todd Frazier from third.

The reason Frazier scored? Padres first baseman Will Myers turned his back on Frazier.

“It was just one of those things,” said Frazier, who had reached on a walk with the bases loaded, driving in the first run of the frame. ‘‘You read what’s going on and take a chance.

“I was just thinking his back was turned, and he threw the ball [home] high enough. It worked out perfectly.’’

And it led to a perfect ending for the Sox, who came back from a 3-1 deficit to take the interleague series – their first series win since April 28-30 against Detroit. ‘‘We’ll take a win any way we can,” Frazier said of the second consecutive comeback.

A night earlier, the winning run came after a walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single.

This time, the big inning featured four walks, a booted ground ball by shortstop Luis Sardinas and Frazier’s heads-up baserunning.

“I think the guys showed a lot of patience controlling the [strike] zone,” manager Rick Renteria said of the inning that saw 14 Sox bat. ‘‘You always want to keep your head up until the play is completely done,” he added of

The inning came too late to give starter Jose Quintana a victory, that going instead to Michael Ynoa (1-0).

But it kept Quintana from a potential hard-luck loss after he made one mistake pitch to Hunter Renfroe in the seventh.

Renfroe’s three-run homer gave the Padres the lead, Quintana having allowed only four other singles.

“We took the series and I think that’s the most important thing,” said Quintana, who went seven innings.

“Take the series and we have a good flight [to the West Coast] for the road trip. The most important thing here is

the team won.”

Quintana’s 60th career no-decision – the most in the majors since 2012 – is a frustration his teammates share for him.

“Man!” Frazier said, comparing Quintana to past teammate Bronson Arroyo. “But those guys pitch for a long time.”

What will matter more for the Sox is for Quintana to continue what has been an improving arc in his last four starts.

He is 2-1 with a 2.77 ERA (8 earned runs in 26 innings) in that span compared to an 0-4 mark and 6.17 ERA in his first four starts.

Renteria is just as confident in his left-hander.

“He doesn’t let anything that happens in the past and let it affect him in terms of results,” Renteria said. “I think his idea, his preparation and his feel for wanting to get after the hitters in terms of his plan, his mindset, is very even keel.

“I think you see the same guy every single day. When he goes out there, even if the results aren’t what you expect, he still goes out there and commands a presence on the mound.”

One hour makes a difference for Sox on West Coast trip

How much difference does an hour make? When it comes to traveling west, the difference can be significant.

“When I was with Cincinnati, it was a three-hour [time] difference,” third baseman Todd Frazier said. “One hour doesn’t seem like much, but I think a two-hour difference is better than three.”

The White Sox’ first West Coast trip is a three-city stretch against Anaheim, Seattle and National League West team Arizona, one of baseball’s

early surprise teams.

Typically the West Coast is a challenging trip, with Anaheim in particular a tough locale for the Sox. They lost all three games played there last season and have lost 11 of their last 12 played there. Since 2012, they’ve lost 15 of 19 games in Angel Stadium.

Set to throw: Right-hander James Shields, sidelined since April 21 with a right lat strain, will throw for the first time Monday.

“I feel great. I’ve really just been following the process. They wanted me to go 12 to 14 days with no throwing and let it heal,” he said.

“It’s frustrating. You want to throw, but I understand the process. I’ll throw [Monday] for the first time and see how it goes.”

A big boy now: After striking out a career-best nine in his Saturday start, rookie right-hander Dylan Covey “became a big leaguer” in Shields eyes.

“He showed emotion. He attacked hitters. He can build off that,” Shields said.

Covey gave up a first-pitch home run to Manuel Margot, but worked into

the fifth, leaving with the bases loaded and charged with another run. But manager Rick Renteria was pleased with his performance.

Roster move: After the game the Sox optioned infielder Cody Asche to Triple-A Charlotte and will add a pitcher today. Asche appeared in 19 games and is hitting .105 (5-for-57).

Jeter gems: Todd Frazier counts his framed photo as an All Star teammate of retired Yankees star Derek Jeter among his treasured possessions.

“He played the game the right way,” Frazier said of Jeter, whose No. 2 was retired Sunday by the Yankees.

It might seem like hoping against hope, but manager Joe Maddon keeps sounding an optimistic note about Arrieta eventually looking like his old self.

“It would be great to have that occur,” Maddon said.

“He’s shown flashes of that, I think, this year, also. I have so much faith and confidence in him and his methods and just him.

“You’re pretty aware that I don’t get caught up off the bandwagon very easily. I really believe he’s going to be fine.

I believe it’s going to be almost like a snap of the fingers, everything’s going to fall back into place, and you’re going to see this slow method of better, better, better, great.”

Maddon agreed with his pitcher about Sunday.

“I thought Jake was outstanding,” he said. “I thought he had his best stuff all year. They hit two home runs. Give them credit for that. But otherwise, the swings and misses, the pitches in the zones, the takes on their part, I thought he was outstanding.”

A return to 2015 form is almost too much to ask for, and Maddon knows that.

“I think all of a sudden you’re going to see something’s going to click and he’s going to be back close to where he had been,” the manager said.

“It’s hard to be where he had been when he won the (Cy Young) award.

Leadoff man Schwarber continues with problems at the plate

ST. LOUIS – Cubs leadoff man Kyle Schwarber continues to struggle as the Cubs head home from a 2-4 road trip to Colorado and St. Louis. But manager Joe Maddon still talked optimistically about the young lefty slugger.

“I’ve seen a great swing, and the ball fouled back,” Maddon said. “Like straight back, meaning he’s just underneath the ball just a little bit. It’s not like he’s slow or not on time – he is.

He’s just underneath the baseball.”

He also has the lowest batting aver-

age (.179) among major-league leadoff hitters with at least 100 plate appearances, has one of the lowest on-base percentages (.313) and takes an 0-for14 streak into Monday’s scheduled day off.

Schwarber did draw five walks during the trip, including one Sunday, when he also worked 3-0 counts in two other at-bats against Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright.

Maddon said he talks with Schwarber daily about things such as keeping “an organized strike zone,” as he does with many of the young hitters.

Maddon said he doesn’t believe the

struggles are a carryover from Schwarber missing all of last season with injury or of too-high expectations coming off a celebrated World Series performance.

Heyward return pushed back: Maddon said right fielder Jason Heyward (jammed right index finger) likely won’t be ready to return from the disabled list on his first eligible day, Tuesday, as originally expected.

Heyward is improving but has lingering discomfort in the finger swinging the bat.

“I’m betting not Tuesday,” Maddon said. “But not far after Tuesday.”

This and that: The Cubs are using the off day to keep Jon Lester on his regular, fifth-day starting schedule, which means his next start comes Thursday against the Reds. Eddie Butler, who made an impressive Cubs debut Friday, is pushed back to Saturday against Milwaukee.

• Shortstop Addison Russell (shoulder) returned to the lineup Sunday after missing three games.

• Ben Zobrist (back) and Kris Bryant (stomach illness) both were out of the lineup again Sunday but available off the bench, with possible returns to the lineup coming Tuesday.

ST. LOUIS – The numbers aren’t getting any better for Jake Arrieta and the Cubs.

Arrieta’s ERA rose from 5.35 to 5.44 Sunday, and the Cubs’ record fell to 1819 with a sleepy 5-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

The game was played in front of 47,925 fans. For the second straight day, a Cubs-Cardinals game set an attendance record at the ballpark.

The Cubs and Arrieta keep insisting that the numbers will start trending in the right direction. Of Arrieta’s eight starts this season, only three have been quality starts.

Two years ago, Arrieta won the Cy Young Award with a 22-6 record and a 1.77 ERA. His second half was one for the history books. Although he was not as dominant last year, Arrieta still managed an 18-8 record with a 3.10 ERA. In Sunday’s game, he worked six innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. Yadier Molina tagged him for a two-run homer in the second inning after Jedd Gyorko led off with a single.

Matt Carpenter added a two-run shot in the third.

Control wasn’t an issue, as Arrieta threw only 85 pitches while walking one and striking out five. But the Cubs still are waiting for Arrieta’s velocity to rise from the low-90s.

“It was actually pretty good,” he said of his day overall. “Probably some of the best stuff I’ve featured this year.

Pretty good command. Just a couple of mistakes I made were capitalized on by those guys for a couple of two-run homers.”

SPORTS BRIEFS Ducks even NHL Western Conference finals

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Nick Ritchie scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period, and the Anaheim Ducks roared back from an early two-goal deficit to even the Western Conference finals with a 5-3 victory over the Nashville Predators in Game 2 on Sunday night.

Jakob Silfverberg, Sami Vatanen and Ondrej Kase also scored while the Ducks cracked imposing goalie Pekka Rinne with a thrilling surge of four goals in less than 19 minutes. The Predators hadn’t allowed four goals in any game during their Stanley Cup playoff run before Anaheim finally got rolling for its sellout crowd.

John Gibson stopped 30 shots, and Antoine Vermette had an empty-net goal for the Ducks.

Ryan Johansen, James Neal and Filip Forsberg scored for the Predators Game 3 is Tuesday night in Nashville.

Rinne made 22 saves for the Predators, who faced relatively little adversity while steamrolling the Blackhawks and St. Louis in the first two rounds on the way to the first conference finals in franchise history.

Truex wins at Kansas; Almora released from medical center

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Martin Truex Jr. pulled away from Ryan Blaney and Kevin Harvick on a late restart Saturday night, winning the NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway.

Brad Keselowski made a pass on the final lap to take second, followed by Harvick and Blaney. Kyle Busch rounded out the top five after winning the Truck Series race Friday night.

The race was halted with 67 laps to go when a broken brake rotor turned Joey Logano’s car into Danica Patrick, sending her hard into the fence in the first turn. Aric Almirola had nowhere to go and slammed into Logano, the force of the impact lifting his car into the air.

Logano and Patrick were treated and released from the infield care center, while Almirola, who fractured a vertebra, was airlifted to the University of Kansas Medical Center and released Sunday.

Jeter’s No 2 retired by Yanks; Monument Park plaque unveiled

NEW YORK – Derek Jeter held a microphone and spoke without notes to the crowd that filled sold-out Yankee Stadium. His No. 2, the last of the single-digit pinstripes, had been retired and a plaque in his honor dedicated that will be placed in Monument Park alongside tributes to Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and other team greats.

“I say this very humbly,” he told the fans.

“There isn’t a person or player I would trade places with that’s playing now or ever.”

Three years removed from a big-league career that spanned 1995 to 2014, Jeter personally picked Mother’s Day for his tribute.

Warriors rally for the win after Spurs lose Leonard to injury

OAKLAND, Calif. – Stephen Curry scored 40 points and hit a tying 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining, and the Golden State Warriors rallied from way down after Kawhi Leonard was lost to an ankle injury to beat the San Antonio Spurs, 113-111, on Sunday in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

Draymond Green gave Golden State the lead for good on a three-point play after the Warriors trailed by as many as 25 points.

Leonard left in the third quarter after he re-injured his left ankle, and the Warriors capitalized with an 18-0 run.

Kevin Durant scored 10 straight points during a key fourth-quarter stretch on the way to 34 points, while Zaza Pachulia had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Leonard had 26 points and eight rebounds. LaMarcus Aldridge delivered another clutch playoff performance with 28 points and eight boards.

Somehow, these unusually careless, cold-shooting Warriors found a way to keep their unblemished postseason record alive at 9-0.

Leonard first went down after stepping on a teammate’s foot along the bench after taking a shot. Pachulia later slid into him as he came down from shooting and Leonard fell into the Spurs bench, grabbing his ankle.

Losing Leonard could be a story of this series. He shot 7 of 13 in 23 minutes to go with eight rebounds and three assists. He made all 11 of his free throws.

He sat out Game 6 of the last round against Houston, a 39-point, series-clinching win on Thursday, after injuring the ankle in a Game 5 overtime victory.

Durant has repeatedly spoken of elevating his game when it matters most – and wow, did he do it at the very moment the Warriors needed a huge lift on their home floor.

LAKE FOREST – Tarik Cohen stands 5-foot-6, but John Fox said the Bears rookie running back “views himself about 6-6.”

Addressing the media for the first time as an NFL player, Cohen’s big personality shined as the Bears concluded their rookie minicamp. He joked about the biggest difference he noticed coming from the MEAC to an NFL practice, albeit with mostly firstyear players.

“First thing is less cutback lanes.

So as many 80-yarders I had in college, not going to get quite that many on this level,” said Cohen, known for his explosive runs at North Carolina A&T. “But I still think I could pop out a few here and there. The defense is way faster than the level I was at.”

Cohen wanted to spend the weekend showing coaches his versatility as a receiver, runner and special-teamer.

He took reps as a punt returner, something he was too valuable to do in college. His role on offense will likely be on third down, Fox said, as a “joker back.”

Jeremy Langford had five receptions on third down last season, which led the Bears but tied for 40th in the

“I would definitely say it did, just getting used to a higher level of play than I did play traditionally in college, as well as just terminology and how certain things work,” he said. “I think coming out here, I didn’t even feel a gap. Like, I felt pretty used to it pretty quick.”

Roster move: The Bears signed tryout player Titus Davis, a wide receiver from Wheaton Warrenville South and Central Michigan.

He was with the Chargers in the 2015 preseason and is the older brother of Titans first-round pick Corey Davis.

The Bears waived rookie wideout Levonte Whitfield.
