Cyborgs at work: Employees can The daily get implanted with microchips TWEET

STOCKHOLM – The syringe slides in between the thumb and index finger. Then, with a click, a microchip is injected in the employee’s hand. Another “cyborg” is created.

What could pass for a dystopian vision of the workplace is almost routine at the Swedish startup hub Epicenter. The company offers to implant its workers and startup members with microchips the size of grains of rice that function as swipe cards: to open doors, operate printers, or buy smoothies with a wave of the hand.

The injections have become so popular that workers at Epicenter hold parties for those willing to get implanted.

“The biggest benefit I think is convenience,” said Patrick Mesterton, co-founder and CEO of Epicenter. As a demonstration, he unlocks a door by merely waving near it. “It basically replaces a lot of things you have, other communication devices, whether it be credit cards or keys.”

The technology in itself is not new. Such chips are used as virtual collar plates for pets.

Companies use them to track deliveries. It’s just never been used to tag employees on a broad scale before. Epicenter and a handful of other companies are the first to make chip implants broadly available.

And as with most new technologies, it raises security and privacy issues. While biologically safe, the data generated by the chips can show how often an employee comes to work or what they buy. Unlike company swipe cards or smartphones, which can generate the same data, a person cannot easily separate themselves from the chip.

“Of course, putting things into your body is quite a big step to do and it was even for me at first,” said Mesterton, remembering how he initially had had doubts.

“But then on the other hand, I mean, people have been implanting things into their body, like pacemakers and stuff to control your heart,” he said. “That’s a way, way more serious thing than having a small chip that can actually communicate with devices.”

Epicenter, which is home to more than 100 companies and some 2,000 workers, began implanting workers in January 2015. Now, about 150 workers have them. A company based in Belgium also offers its employees such implants, and there are isolated cases around the world where tech enthusiasts have tried this out in recent years.

The small implants use Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, the same as in contactless credit cards or mobile payments. When activated by a reader a few inches away, a small amount of data flows between the two devices via electromagnetic waves. The implants are “passive,” meaning they contain information that other devices can read but cannot read information themselves.

Ben Libberton, a microbiologist at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute, said hackers could conceivably gain huge swathes of information from embedded microchips. The ethical dilemmas will become bigger the more sophisticated the microchips become.

“The data that you could possibly get from a chip that is embedded in your body is a lot different from the data that you can get from a smartphone,” he said. “Conceptually you could get data about your health, you could get data about your whereabouts, how often you’re working, how long you’re working, if you’re taking toilet breaks and things like that.”

Libberton said that if such data are collected, the big question remains of what happens to the information, who uses it, and for what purpose.

So far, Epicenter’s group of cyborgs doesn’t seem too concerned.

“People ask me; ‘Are you chipped?’ and I say; ‘Yes, why not?’ ” said Fredric Kaijser, 47, the chief experience officer at Epicenter. “And they all get excited about privacy issues and what that means and so forth. And for me it’s just a matter of I like to try new things and just see it as more of an enabler and what that would bring into the future.”

The implants have become so popular that Epicenter workers stage monthly events where attendees have the option of being “chipped” for free.

That means visits from self-described “body hacker” Jowan Osterlund from Biohax Sweden who performs the “operation.”

He injects the implants – using pre-loaded syringes – into the fleshy area of the hand, just next to the thumb. The process lasts a few seconds, and more often than not there are no screams and barely a drop of blood. “The next step for electronics is to move into the body,” he said.

Sandra Haglof, 25, who works for Eventomatic, an events company that works with Epicenter, has had three piercings before, and her left hand barely shakes as Osterlund injects the small chip.

“I want to be part of the future,” she said, laughing.

Voters will decide who represents them on village boards and city councils, school and community college boards, township boards and a wide range of other local governments such as park, library and fire district boards.

Although the polarizing results of the Nov. 6 presidential election have continued to dominate the news, this election in many ways has a much more direct effect on you and your pocketbook. These local governments levy your property taxes, and McHenry County has the 29th highest burden na-

Despite this, few voters participate in local elections in odd-numbered years. Two years ago, barely one county voter in 10 bothered to cast ballots. Several races in the past several odd-year elections were decided by one vote.

Several races with large numbers of candidates, along with several races featuring candidates running on anti-tax platforms, make this election an interesting one.

Voters in Woodstock School District 200 have 10 candidates to choose from for four open seats. Issues in the district

include high taxes and possible school consolidation because of declining enrollment.

In Crystal Lake-based High School District 155, where taxes and the unpopular decision to build new bleachers that prompted a lawsuit are on voters’ minds, nine candidates are running for four seats.

McHenry school districts 15 and 156 have 11 and seven candidates running, respectively. In District 15, which oversees McHenry’s K-8 schools, voters will elect six of the district’s seven seats because of previous resignations.

JOHNSBURG – Faced with a civil rights lawsuit in a high-profile murder case, Johnsburg officials are staying quiet.

Mario Casciaro’s attorney, Kathleen Zellner, filed a lawsuit March 27 seeking money damages from the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, members of the Johnsburg Police Department and the village. Attorneys claim in the lawsuit that McHenry County authorities violated Casciaro’s rights and caused him a loss of freedom, emotional distress, mental anguish and embarrassment during a murder investigation that gained national attention.

“Mario Casciaro was maliciously pursued and harassed by law enforcement for years, then wrongfully accused and charged with murder in connection with the disappearance of Brian Carrick almost a decade after Brian went missing,” the lawsuit said.

None of the defendants in the case has had attorneys file appearances on their behalf as of Monday afternoon. Calls made to Johnsburg Police Chief Keith Von Allmen and Village Administrator Claudett Peters were not returned.

McHenry County jurors found Casciaro guilty of first-degree murder by intimidation in March 2013 after the conclusion of three trials, one for perjury and two for murder, in connection with Johnsburg teenager Brian Carrick’s 2002 disappearance. Carrick last was seen Dec 20, 2002, at the grocery store where he worked, which also was owned by Casciaro’s parents.

Casciaro, now 33, was the only person convicted in the case. He served 22 months

“Although (Casciaro’s) conviction has been reversed, he has suffered greatly and will continue to suffer as a result of Defendant’s misconduct. This lawsuit seeks redress for his injuries,” according to the lawsuit filed by Casciaro’s attorneys.

City officials to consider tightening Woodstock’s ‘truck stop’ ordinance

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – City officials will meet Tuesday to consider amending an ordinance that would make it more difficult for gas stations to get video gaming machines.

Under the Illinois Video Gaming Act, licensed truck stop establishments are allowed to operate video gambling machines at their operations. The gaming act law has a broad definition of what counts as a truck stop; however, and city officials want to tighten up Woodstock code in part to make sure gas stations can’t get machines inside.

“Recently, a gas station in a nearby community was able to prove that they met the Video Gaming Act definition of a truck stop, and that community had to issue a video gaming

Continued from page A4 Lamb and others testified that Casciaro was dealing marijuana, and as one of his sellers, Carrick owed Casciaro drug money.

Prosecutors relied heavily on the testimony of Lamb, who said he likely threw the punch that killed the 17-yearold. Prosecutors have said Casciaro used Lamb as the “muscle” or a “henchman” to intimidate Carrick into paying the drug debt.

Lamb was given full immunity for his testimony against Casciaro. Lamb testified that after he punched Carrick in the face and Carrick “fell down,” Casciaro told Lamb to leave, which Lamb said he did. Carrick’s body has not been found.

Lamb later recanted the entire story in a signed affidavit and during a national news TV program about the case, where he said prosecutors told him what to say. The lawsuit contends that after Lamb was arrested in late 2009 on drug charges, Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs viewed his arrest as an opportunity to implicate Casciaro in Carrick’s disappearance.

“Defendant Combs interrogated Shane Lamb, concocted a made-up story implicating Lamb and (Casciaro) in Brian’s disappearance, and coerced Lamb into adopting it,” Zellner wrote in the lawsuit.

Attorneys also said that based on Combs’ “sheer dislike of (Casciaro),” he directed law enforcement’s efforts to implicate him. Prosecutors have vehemently denied such allegations.

Zellner also has argued that there was “overwhelming evidence” proving that Render was the sole perpetrator in Carrick’s death. Render was the only other person who forensically was connected to the crime scene, as his blood was in and around the cooler, the lawsuit said.

Render was charged in 2008 with concealing a homicide, but the charge later was dismissed. He died in 2012.

Attorneys in the lawsuit argued that police “deliberately” withheld evidence related to Render that could have helped Casciaro. They also claim that Johnsburg Police Chief Keith Von Allmen diverted the investigation because he was friends with Render’s father.

McHenry County State’s Attorney

Patrick Kenneally, who helped prosecute Casciaro, said that although the allegations were without merit, the lawsuit itself was not unexpected.

“We knew this was coming,” Kenneally said in a statement. “This is an opportunistic lawsuit filed on behalf of a defendant convicted of felony murder by a McHenry County jury. The allegations in the lawsuit, while imaginative, are entirely without merit. We are eager for our day in court to prove where the real injustice lies, and once again, the sad truth about what happened to Brian Carrick in 2002.”

Zellner could not be reached for comment about how much money Casciaro was seeking.

Alderman Andy Glab made the motion Monday to accept the proposal from Mad Bomber.

“I did enjoy Mad Bomber quite a bit last year,” Glab said.

Alderman Jeffrey Schaefer seconded Glab’s motion.

“I do think that either one of these proposals and companies would be definitely qualified,” Schaefer said.

However, the motion failed to carry, as Aldermen Richard Wimmer, Patrick Devine, Scott Curry and Vic Santi voted “no.”

“I think Melrose did everything right, and now they’re being punished for it by this motion,” Wimmer said. “I don’t think Mad Bomber should have the opportunity to go forward this year. ... Nothing against them; I just think it’s procedural.”

Santi then made a new motion to accept Melrose Pyrotechnics’ proposal, which was seconded by Curry. The new motion passed unanimously.

McHENRY – The McHenry City Council approved a motion Monday to allow Epic Deli to sell wine and beer at its tables.

Council members voted, 7-0, to grant a Class H liquor license to the sandwich shop at 2616 Schaid Court, McHenry.

The license application was submitted by Jeannine Wildey, owner and operator of Epic Deli LLC. The Class H liquor license permits the retail sale of beer and wine for consumption on premises at tables only.

“I was so glad when they came to McHenry, and having a liquor license should help them expand,” Alderwoman Geri Condon said after the meeting.

Epic Deli, which offers an extensive menu of sandwiches, sides and

desserts, relocated from Johnsburg to McHenry in July.

In a separate matter, the City Council also considered two proposals for the annual Jaycees Day Fireworks display and celebration July 1.

Included on the agenda at the City Council meeting March 20 was a motion to approve a contract with Melrose Pyrotechnics to produce a 25-minute fireworks display in conjunction with the annual Jaycees Day Fireworks celebration in Petersen Park.

During that meeting, representatives from Mad Bomber Fireworks Productions addressed the council, saying they failed to receive the notice to submit their proposal and were interested in performing this summer in McHenry.

After some discussion during that meeting, the council decided to review both proposals.

Hills village boards and the Woodstock City Council. Woodstock voters also will choose from three candidates for mayor.

In Hebron, three candidates are running against Village President John Jacobson, who has been beset by legal issues and drug problems.

In Crystal Lake, three incumbents and two challengers are running for three open seats, and in neighboring Lakewood, an anti-tax slate consisting of a village president and three trustee candidates is seeking to gain a majority on the seven-member board.

A number of township races are made interesting by Democratic challengers seeking to chip away at the Republican Party’s dominance over McHenry County politics. Democratic candidates are running for seats in Algonquin, McHenry and Nunda townships. In McHenry Township, voters will choose among a whopping 12 candidates – four Republicans, four Democrats and four independents – for four open trustee seats.

Most of McHenry County falls within the boundaries of McHenry County College, where five candidates are running for two open seats on the board of trustees. Voters in Harvard will decide two referendum questions asking them to raise property taxes.

The county clerk’s office will be closed to regular business Tuesday.

He started his life as a mason bricklayer and later owned and operated (with a childhood friend and neighbor “Skip”) a gas/service station in Chicago. Harry served 2 tours in the U.S. Navy during WWII and Korea. He enjoyed playing pinochle and poker with friends, watching westerns, fishing, cars, and had to have ketchup at every meal. He was extremely fond of having friends and family over for “cocktails.”

In the winter of 2002, after a lifetime of living in Harvard, Edna and Arnold moved to the Northern Lights Apartments in Hayward, WI in order to be closer to the family. She made many new friends, enjoying life at a more leisurely pace by visiting and playing cards with her good neighbors in the apartments.

Edna and Arnold became associate members at First Lutheran Church of Hayward, where she was most active in the kitchen, making snacks for Bible School and Wednesday Night Dinners. She enjoyed the church library, reading every large print religious novel they had.

Both Edna and Arnold helped their daughter at LCO Elementary School by reading and playing learning games with the students.

After Arnold’s passing in 2008, Edna continued to enjoy her life at the apartment for six more years. With the encouragement of her son, she became active at the Hayward Senior Center, visiting, playing cards, and having lunch. The last three years, Edna’s home was at Care Partners Assisted Living in Hayward where she enjoyed visiting, playing Bingo and cards with residents, staff, family and friends. Throughout life this “sweet” woman touched the lives of many.

Edna is survived by her son, John Wittmus of Hayward; and her daughter, Sandra (William) Ferris of Stone Lake; granddaughter, Amy (Samuel) Ramirez; great-grandsons, Samuel William and Daniel John of Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico; granddaughter, Molly (Jeff) Gewedik; great-grandchildren, Edward Philip and Sophie Marie of Maple Grove, MN. Also surviving are several beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Alice Worden of Walworth, WI; and her husband, Arnold.

Services for Edna will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Harvard, IL. There will be a time of visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Hamlin also wrote about her pride in many of her accomplishments, like being in an exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, about one-hit wonders.

Hamlin wrote that she was the first Latina to be on that list, and she also was the first Latina to appear on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” show.

Hamlin lived in New Mexico at the time of her death. She left behind Cray, Sanders, and son Joey Tafolla, along with four grandchildren.

PHOENIX – The singer of the 1960s hit “Angel Baby,” a song covered by artists such as John Lennon and Linda Ronstadt, has died.

Rose Hamlin, the 71-year-old lead singer of Rosie and the Originals, died in her sleep on March 30, according to a post by her daughter, Debbie Cray, on the late performer’s website.

Hamlin was born Rosalie Hamlin on July 21, 1945, in Oregon. She was raised in Alaska before moving to California when she was a preteen.

Hamlin was 14 years old when she penned “Angel Baby,” a song that Lennon would later call one of his alltime favorites.

Cray said Hamlin hadn’t performed in years over concerns for her

health, but she had taken up tending a “lovely garden,” according to her post on the website.

Cray said that her mother was a nature and animal lover who kept chickens and enjoyed fishing, planting trees and camping.

She had a great sense of humor and loved playing pranks on people, Cray said.

“I think she really enjoyed just being Rosie the mom and grandma. I think after a while like that was just a separate life,” Cray said of her mother’s music career.

Hamlin wrote in her autobiography online that she penned “Angel Baby” about a teenage love and struggled for years to get credit for the song after a man was listed as its writer.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Senate Democrats, contending that immigrants are hiding in their homes because of aggressive actions by President Donald Trump’s administration, promoted legislation Monday that would bar law enforcement from entering state-supported schools or health facilities without a warrant looking for immigrants in the country illegally.

Senate President John Cullerton’s said his “TRUST” act is a response to growing anxiety in immigrant communities because of federal raids and anti-immigrant rhetoric from the new Republican president.

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid on Chicago’s northwest side last week led to the shooting of a man by an agent.

“We’re drawing a bright line between do’s and don’ts for police,” Cullerton told a Chicago news conference hosted by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.

Illinois man pleads not guilty in 40-year-old cold case

KANKAKEE – An Illinois man accused of killing his wife and scattering her dismembered body in two rivers nearly 40 years ago has pleaded not guilty in the cold case.

A Kankakee County Grand Jury charged 70-year-old Thomas A. Small last week with two counts of murder and one count of concealing a homicide, the Daily Journal reported.

Small is accused of bludgeoning his 26-year-old wife, Diane Marie Riordan Small, inside their home in Bradley on Oct. 15, 1980. Court documents say Small hid his wife’s body in an attic for about two days before taking it to Coles County, dismembering it and tossing it into the Embarras and Vermillion rivers.

No discipline for N’western frats after sex assault claims

EVANSTON – Northwestern University said no disciplinary action will be taken against two fraternities after sexual assault allegations.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Northwestern made the announcement Friday. The move comes after Northwestern administrators in February issued a security alert when reports were made that as many as four female students were possibly given a date rape drug during a

“TRUST” act in 2014. Andy Kang, director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice and a primary author of the Illinois adaptation, said Oregon, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Vermont have similar laws. New York and Maryland are considering versions.

The measure has four main tenets.

First, it creates “safe zones,” barring law enforcement authorities from entering state-supported school or health facilities without a warrant. In addition, no local officers can be deputized as federal officers for an investigation without a warrant.

Cullerton stressed that the measure would not keep police from investigating crimes or apprehending suspects.

“But the prevailing criteria to detain an individual should not be based on someone’s citizenship, immigration status, background or beliefs, but by the blind exercise of the rule of law,” Cullerton said.

The plan would also set deadlines for police to complete paperwork for immigrant crime victims who cooperate in an investigation. Those who cooperate are eligible for special visas that allow temporary residence, but police are often slow or negligent in completing them.

And expanding on the sanctuary city idea – places such as Chicago, Evanston, and Urbana where immi-

grants in the country illegally are largely left alone – Cullerton’s legislation would ban local participation in any sort of registry based on religion, race or immigrant status.

Currently, there is no such registry, and Sheldon Nahmod, a constitutional scholar at Chicago-Kent School of Law, said no president would have an easy go in such a registration law being declared constitutional.

The U.S. Supreme Court has found that Washington can’t withhold funding as a punitive measure, Kang said.

He said it’s unlikely a local police department could find itself losing federal dollars for skirting cooperation with the feds.

The legislation will have a hearing Wednesday in the Senate Executive Committee. House Democrats have introduced some similar measures to limit local police cooperation and bar immigration authorities from schools, churches or hospitals without warrants. Republicans have raised objections.

Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis would not comment on whether the governor supports Cullerton’s initiative, but said, “Illinois is a welcoming and diverse state and the governor believes in comprehensive immigration reform.”

The Southern Illinoisan reported that Ryan Povolish last Tuesday pulled from Kinkaid Lake a crappie that weighed in at 4 pounds and 8.8 ounces – breaking the record of a fisherman who pulled a 4 pound, 8.2 ounce crappie from Rend Lake nearly 40 years ago.

When he hooked the fish, Povolish initially believed that he had hooked a bass.

But when his buddy, Josh Jackson, pulled out the fish, he said neither of them could believe that he’d caught a crappie that big.

Democrats claim votes needed to block Gorsuch McConnell: GOP will confirm nominee Friday

WASHINGTON – Democrats claimed the votes they needed Monday to block President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, but the victory was only fleeting, setting up a historic showdown with Republicans who intend to rewrite Senate rules and muscle Neil Gorsuch onto the high court.

The coming fight was assured as the bitterly divided Judiciary Committee voted, 11-9, along party lines, to send Gorsuch’s nomination to the full Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has vowed he will be confirmed on Friday.

Short of the 60 votes needed to overcome procedural hurdles, McConnell is ready to lead Republicans in a unilateral voting change so significant in the rules-conscious Congress that it’s been dubbed the “nuclear option,” lowering the confirmation threshold to a filibuster-proof simple majority in the 100-member Senate.

Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware became the key 41st vote for the Democrats on Monday, declaring during committee debate that Gorsuch’s conservative record showed an activist approach to the law and that he evaded questions during his confirmation hearings. Coons also said that Republicans’ treatment of former President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, left lasting scars after they denied him so much as a hearing following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia early last year.

“We are at a historic moment in the history of the United States Senate” because of actions by both parties, Coons said. “We have eroded

the process for reaching agreement and dishonored our long traditions of acting above partisanship.”

By day’s end, 43 Democrats had said they won’t support Gorsuch.

The long-term consequences of the coming confrontation could be profound, as the rules change Republicans intend to enact would apply to future Supreme Court nominees, too, allowing them to be voted onto the court without any input from the minority party. And though predicting a justice’s votes can be difficult, confirmation of the 49-year-old Gorsuch is expected to restore the conservative majority that existed while Scalia was alive, which could then be in place or even expand over decades to come as some of the more liberal justices age.

For Republicans and Trump, Gorsuch’s confirmation will be a moment of triumph, a bright spot in a troubled young administration that’s failed on the legislative front with the health care bill and is under investigation over Russia connections.

The nomination of Gorsuch, by contrast, has won universal praise from Republicans, some of whom call his appointment Trump’s best move so far as president. Gorsuch has spent more than a decade on the federal appeals bench in Denver, where he’s issued consistently conservative rulings, and he appeared on Trump’s list of potential candidates partly generated by the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation during the campaign.

Gorsuch’s confirmation will also be vindication for McConnell’s strategy of refusing to fill Scalia’s seat last year, instead leaving it open for the next president, even though few imagined then that that person would be Trump.

The showdown over the “nuclear option,” expected on the Senate floor Thursday, is likely to be accompanied by much hand-wringing from senators bemoaning the decay of the chamber’s traditions of bipartisanship and comity.

Alongside subsidized private insurance for people who don’t have jobbased coverage, the ACA expanded Medicaid to serve millions more low-income adults. With the repeal effort stalled,

some of the 19 states that have refused the expansion may come forward.

That gives the Trump administration an opportunity to steer an important program in a different direction.

WASHINGTON – With prospects in doubt for repealing “Obamacare,” some Republicans say the Trump administration can rewrite regulations and take other actions to undo much of the health care law on its own.

Some of those moves could disrupt life for millions of people, many in states that the new president carried. And then there’s the risk of court challenges.

“In a world where Obamacare is not going to be repealed and replaced, do you work to try to make it succeed, or do you take steps to undermine it in order to continue blaming President Obama and the Democrats for the dysfunction of the health care system?” asked Nicholas Bagley, a University of Michigan law professor who’s analyzed the administration’s leeway to make changes.

“Right now we don’t know the answer, and we are getting conflicting signals from the administration.”

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office recently concluded that insurance markets would probably be stable “in most areas” under the Obama-era Affordable Care Act, or ACA. But President Donald Trump has said “it’s imploding, and soon will explode.”

GOP congressional leaders, who had to pull their repeal bill, describe a multipronged attack on “Obamacare” that includes administration action. Democrats warn of “sabotage.” Enduring political turmoil is seen as contributing to insurers’ worries about returning to the health law’s markets next year.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – A bomb blast tore through a subway train deep under Russia’s second-largest city Monday, killing 11 people and wounding more than 40 in a chaotic scene that left victims sprawled on a smoky platform.

Hours later, anguish and fear rose again when police found and defused a shrapnel-packed explosive device at another St. Petersburg station.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which came while President Vladimir Putin was visiting the city, his hometown. In the past two decades, Russian trains and planes have been frequent targets of terrorism, usually blamed on Islamic militants.

News reports initially said police were searching for two suspects, and Russian state television showed a photo of one suspect wearing what appeared to be a skullcap characteristic of Russia’s Muslim regions. However, the Interfax news agency later cited unspecified sources as saying police now suspect the blast was the work of a suicide bomber linked to radical Islamists.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said it was looking for the “perpetrators and organizers of the terror attack.”

St. Petersburg, a major tourist destination famed for its imperial palaces and lavish art museums, had been spared previous attacks.

“From now on, I will be scared to take the subway,” said Marina Ilyina, 30, who brought flowers to the station where the train stopped after the bombing. “We in St. Petersburg thought we wouldn’t be touched by that.”

The explosion occurred in midafternoon as the train traveled between

stations on one of the city’s north-south lines.

The driver chose to continue on to the next stop, Technological Institute, a decision praised by the Investigative Committee as aiding evacuation efforts and reducing the danger to passengers who would have had to walk along the electrified tracks.

The National Anti-Terrorism Committee said the death toll was 11, with 45 people being treated for wounds in hospitals.

Amateur video broadcast by Russian TV showed people lying on the platform of the Technological Institute station, and others bleeding and weeping just after the damaged train pulled in.

“Everything was covered in smoke.

There were a lot of firefighters,” Maria Smirnova, a student on a train behind the stricken one, told independent TV station Dozhd.

Within two hours of the blast, authorities had found and deactivated another bomb at another busy station, Vosstaniya Square, the anti-terror agency said.

That station is a major transfer point for passengers on two lines and serves the railway station to Moscow.

Russian law enforcement agencies confirmed that the device was loaded with shrapnel, and the Interfax news agency said it contained up to 2.2 pounds of explosives.

Interfax cited an unidentified law enforcement official saying that investigators think the suspected suicide bomber left the bomb at the Vosstaniya Square station before blowing himself up on the train. The agency said authorities believe the suspect, a 23-year-old who came from ex-Soviet Central Asia and was linked to radical Islamist groups, carried the explosive device onto the train in a rucksack.

Local races have meaning

Today might lack the splash, the 24-hour vitriol, the social media onslaught and cable news soap opera of Nov. 8, 2016, but it’s an important day, nonetheless.

No, the tilt of the Supreme Court isn’t at stake nor are matters of national security. Thankfully, none of the candidates are demonized or have turned to demagogue status. They’re mainly just people who want what’s best for their communities, although some have different opinions about priorities.

But what these people, many of whom are either unpaid volunteers or paid small stipends, do over the next four years will have tremendous impact on your communities. They’ll decide matters regarding public education, street repairs, how to pay for budget-crushing pensions, who picks up your garbage, how to keep jobs and business in your town and attract others.

Those are things that will affect your lives on a short-term and long-term basis. What they decide and how they choose to govern will absolutely matter to you in a meaningful way as opposed to a political zinger you can post on Facebook.

No, local government isn’t the only thing that matters in making strong, thriving communities, just as the U.S. is bigger as a whole than the people who happen to govern it at a given moment. But it’s certainly hard to maintain strong, thriving communities with dysfunctional governments.

Only about 10 percent of McHenry County residents will bother to show up today (or in early voting) to select our next set of leaders in races that include mayor, village president, city council, village trustee, school boards, fire districts and key township positions.

That doesn’t mean 90 percent of our residents don’t care about their communities. There are many other ways to lead and get involved, but that doesn’t absolve our responsibilities as citizens to participate in elections.

The issues and problems theses taxing bodies face aren’t someone else’s problem, they are very much our problem and we pay for them literally and figuratively.

It takes some guts to run for public office, particularly these local offices where individuals take on often thankless tasks of making decisions that will probably upset some people. They at least deserve our attention once every few years.

Europe is firm but fair on Brexit talks With talks on Britain’s exit from the European Union finally about to begin, one procedural issue looms large: Do the negotiations on three big subjects – exit terms, transitional arrangements, and a future comprehensive agreement on a U.K.-EU partnership – move in parallel or in entirely separate stages?

Disagreement over this seemingly minor detail could sink the whole effort.

The U.K. has far more to lose in these negotiations than the EU, but if the talks break down it would advance the interests of neither side. An understanding of how the talks should proceed is therefore needed at the start – and a formula suggested last week by the European Council offers grounds for optimism.

The EU is concerned, in the first instance, that Britain settles its liabilities and meets its other obligations to the EU when it leaves. The U.K. wants that dis-

cussion to happen alongside talks on future arrangements, so that concessions in one area might be traded against concessions in another.

The problem is that the European Commission has proposed an exit bill of as much as 60 billion euros (to cover planned investments, EU staff pensions and other costs), a figure that one British minister has called absurd. If the EU presents these terms on a take-it-or-leave-it basis, and the British government is unable to justify them to its citizens, the talks could fail almost before they’ve begun.

Last week, the European Council, the body representing EU governments, issued draft guidelines to its negotiators. The overall posture is firm but fair – and on this issue of sequencing, the council isn’t ruling out compromise. Describing the first phase of talks, the guidelines said the council will “determine

when sufficient progress has been achieved to allow negotiations to proceed to the next phase.”

A good choice of words. “Sufficient progress” is sufficiently vague to allow negotiators to move on to other matters before exit terms are signed and sealed.

The greater the scope for compromise across the full range of issues, the better the prospects of a successful, mutually advantageous result. EU governments will need to resist the temptation to harden this “sufficient progress” language as things move forward.

The disentangling of Britain from the rest of Europe is likely to be one of the most difficult and complicated international negotiations ever undertaken.

The chances of this ending well, especially for the U.K., are poor.

But if Europe’s leaders adopt these guidelines, they’ll deserve some credit for choosing not to cripple the talks from the start.

I am so glad the GOP balked at these officials’ selfishness and held an “old-fashioned caucus” (saving all taxpayers from a $40,000 primary) and nominated real tax-fighters.

NEW YORK – If you’re driving for Uber or renting out a room through Airbnb to make some extra cash, don’t forget – you likely need to pay taxes on what you earned, even if it’s a parttime gig.

Unlike full-time jobs, where taxes are automatically withheld from every paycheck, it’s usually up to freelance workers to keep records and put aside money to eventually pay the IRS. And since the IRS considers on-demand workers to be self-employed, it also helps to keep track of expenses that can help reduce your tax bill.

Here are some tax tips for those working as part of the on-demand economy:

NO FORMS DOESN’T MEAN NO TAXES

You may not receive a form at the end of the year listing everything you earned. That doesn’t mean you can skip paying taxes. You may owe the government on what you earned and could get in trouble if you don’t pay.

Those earning money through on-demand apps such as Uber or Lyft need to report the income on a Schedule C form, said Fred Slater, a certified public accountant and principal at MS 1040 LLC in New York. And if you used Airbnb or other home-renting sites to bring in income, use Schedule E. Any money you made is easily traceable since transactions take place online. “You’d be nuts not to report it,” Slater said.

KEEP TRACK OF EXPENSES

Much of what you spend for on-demand work can be used to reduce your tax bill. If you’re driving your car for Uber or Lyft, for example, car washes, fuel costs and auto repairs can be deductible, said Frederick Towles, an accountant at The Towles Group Inc. in Uniondale, New York. But you’ll need to keep records of what you spend throughout the year. And also keep track of the miles you drive getting to a customer and during the ride, Towles said. Galaxy S8 phone aims to dispel Note 7 combustion debacle

NEW YORK – Samsung seems to be playing it safe – at least with its battery – as it unveils its first major smartphone since the embarrassing recall of its fire-prone Note 7.

The Galaxy S8 will come in two sizes, both bigger than comparable models from last year. To maximize display space, there’s no more physical home button. The S8 also sports a voice assistant intended to rival Siri and Google Assistant.

But battery capacity isn’t increasing, despite the larger sizes, meaning more breathing room for the battery. Samsung had pushed the engineering envelope with the Note 7 battery, which contributed to spontaneous combustions. That recall cost Samsung at least $5.3 billion. Although many customers remain loyal, any further misstep could prove fatal.

The phone, announced Wednesday in New York, will come out April 21. The standard-size S8 will cost about $750 and the larger S8 Plus about $850 – both about $100 more than comparable iPhones and rival Android phones.

“That’s a big bet that its phones will justify a higher price, whereas it could have used these new phones as a way to drive higher sales after a couple of years of stagnation,” said Jan Dawson, an analyst with Jackdaw Research.

About that battery

Samsung has blamed the Note 7 fires on multiple design and manufacturing defects in its batteries.

Inspectors concluded some of the batteries were too small for their capacity, putting pressure on the internal structure.

The company says phones now will go through multiple inspections, including X-rays and stress tests at extreme temperatures. And Samsung no longer is trying to squeeze a lot of battery power in a small space. The S8 Plus model, for instance, has 3 percent less battery power than the Galaxy S7 Edge, but the phone itself is 12 percent larger.

Samsung says software and chip improvements mean the new phones still will last all day.

Bigger, taller screens

The S8 phone’s display measures 5.8 inches diagonally, compared with 5.1 inches on the S7. The S8 Plus will be 6.2 inches, compared with S7 Edge’s 5.5 inches and the Note 7’s 5.7 inches. Samsung is getting rid of the “Edge” distinction and bringing curved sides to all S8 phones.

Samsung also has made it easier to look at apps without scrolling as much. It enlarged the screen by minimizing the frame, or bezel, surrounding the display; gone is a horizontal strip with the home button at the bottom. Instead, Samsung is embedding a virtual home button in the display and moving the fingerprint sensor to the back. In addition, both S8 models are taller than their predecessors, but widths are roughly the same. That makes them easy to hold in one hand.

The company says it will first consult regulatory authorities and carriers and assess local demand. It’s not yet known when and which countries such phones would be sold.

Samsung killed the Note 7 phone after dozens overheated and caught on fire. Samsung recalled one set, but found problems with the replacements as well. The spontaneous fires prompted Samsung to recall millions of phones and take a $5.3 billion hit on its earnings.

Samsung conducted extensive tests since then and has blamed multiple design and manufacturing defects in batteries made by two different companies. That means Samsung could replace phones with safer batteries.

For phones that aren’t returning to the market, Samsung says it will reuse components and recycle what’s left.

But there’s a major caveat: Bixby will work only with selected Samsung apps, including the photo gallery and messages, along with Google Play Music. Not all touch commands will have voice counterparts right away. Other apps will be able to adopt Bixby, but Samsung has had a mixed track record in getting other companies to support its homebrewed functions, such as an “Air View” feature for showing pop-up previews of content. Samsung claims its new voice assistant, Bixby, will do much more than rivals from Apple, Google, Microsoft and Amazon. For one thing, Samsung says Bixby will be able to handle any smartphone task currently managed by touch. As with previous models, the S8 is water and dust resistant and features a memory card slot to supplement 64 gigabytes of built-in storage, which is higher than the base models of most rivals. The S8 will get an iris scanner to let people unlock the phone by looking at it ; the feature was new in the ditched Note 7 phone.

Twitter eases character limit

NEW YORK – Twitter has found more creative ways to ease its 140-character limit without officially raising it.

Now, the company says when you reply to someone – or to a group – usernames no longer will count toward those 140 characters. This especially will be helpful with group conversations, where replying to two, three or more users at a time could be especially difficult with the character constraints.

When users reply, the names of the people they are replying to will be on top of the text of the actual tweet, rather than a part of it.

Last year, Twitter said it would stop counting photos, videos, quote tweets, polls and GIF animations toward the character limit. Twitter also said it would stop counting usernames, but the change did not go into effect until now.

Twitter, which has been struggling to attract new users, has been trying to appeal to both proponents and opponents by sticking to the current limit while allowing more freedom to express thoughts, or rants, through images and other media.

Facebook adds more Snapchat-like features

NEW YORK – Facebook is adding more Snapchat-like features to its app.

The company says it wants to let your camera “do the talking” as more people are posting photos and videos instead of blocks of text.

Facebook is rolling out an app update starting last Tuesday. With it, you can tap a new camera icon on the top left corner. That opens up the phone’s camera to do a photo or video post.

You could have posted photos from the app before, but it took an extra tap.

Once you open the camera, you’ll find Facebook’s other new Snapchat-like features, including filters that can be added to images. Other effects, such as animations and other interactive filters, are a new twist to dressed-up photos.

Also new is a “stories” tool that lets you post photos and videos that stay live for 24 hours. This feature already is available on Messenger and Instagram, which is owned by Facebook.

Cosby Judge expects 2-week trial; jury to be sequestered NORRISTOWN, Pa.– The judge in Bill Cosby’s criminal case expects the trial to last about two weeks and hopes to have a jury in place before the proceeding opens June 5 in suburban Philadelphia.

At a pretrial hearing Monday, Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill said he hopes to pick jurors in late May. He insisted the jurors’ names will not be made public.

The jurors will come from the Pittsburgh area and be sequestered throughout the

trial nearly 300 miles away in Norristown.

Cosby, 79, is accused of drugging and molesting a Temple University employee at his home in 2004. He faces 10 years in prison if convicted on felony sex assault charges.

Harrison Ford won’t face penalties in runway incident LOS ANGELES – Harrison Ford’s attorney said the actor will not face any penalties over mistakenly landing on a taxiway at a Southern California airport earlier this year.

Attorney Stephen Hofer writes in a statement that the Federal Aviation Administration will not fine Ford, and the actor will retain his pilot’s license without restriction.

Ford mistakenly landed on a taxiway at John Wayne Airport in Orange County on Feb. 13 after flying over an American Airlines jet that was waiting to take off.

The FAA confirmed it had concluded its investigation into the incident, but the agency said it does not comment on individual pilots.

Ice compresses applied for 15 to 20 minutes every four to six hours, for three to five days, also can be quite effective in managing the swelling and pain.

Less frequently, it becomes necessary to drain the excess fluid from the bursa with a needle and syringe, a procedure known as aspiration. If we suspect infection rather than injury plays a role, we will send the fluid out for analysis.

In many cases, bursitis will resolve itself over the course of a few weeks or, perhaps, months. In some instances, though, the pain may be persistent. When patients don’t get relief from rest, icing and anti-inflammatories, the next step can be a cortisone injection into the site. Cortisone usually provides speedy relief from pain and can be targeted to a specific location.

We have found that gradually adding a gentle stretching program and some easy strengthening exercises can aid recovery.

An elbow band, which reduces the pressure of the muscles in the forearm, can help with pain. Your family doctor will be able to help you with all of these.

Dear Reader: Our skeletons are marvels of mechanical engineering. They create a scaffold for our muscles, skin and circulatory system, shelter our inner organs, and provide the leverage that makes it possible for us to move about. Wherever our bones meet, particularly in our joints, tiny fluid-filled sacs known as bursa act as cushions. They allow bones and connective tissue to glide easily over one another with minimal friction.

When injury, repetitive movement or sustained pressure causes one or more bursa to become inflamed, the resulting pain and tenderness are characteristic of a condition known as bursitis.

Age can play a role in bursitis, as can rheumatoid arthritis. The pain arises when an injured bursa fills with excess fluid and then presses against surrounding tissues and nerves.

The most common locations for bursitis are the hip, knee, shoulder and, as you have discovered, the elbow. The condition is diagnosed via a physical examination of the area, and tests such as an X-ray or an MRI. When a physician suspects infection may play a role in bursitis, she or he will take some fluid from the affected area for testing.

Since we’re not sure what treatment you may received have already, we’ll run down our approach with our patients. We begin by addressing the underlying cause, which is inflammation. Rest is important. Bursitis can be brought on by a specific activity, such as tennis for bursitis in the elbow, or throwing a ball or lifting a toddler for bursitis in the shoulder. We recommend that our

Prairie Ridge goalkeeper Taylor Golt ran off the field at halftime to ring out her gloves, which were soaked with water. The senior finished with seven saves.

“I think it’s great in conditions like this to get on the board right away,” Prairie Ridge coach Andre Watson said. “Sometimes, in conditions like this, skill can go out the window in a hurry, so it was nice that we could establish our game.

“I give Belvidere North a lot of credit. They came out, they played, they possessed and they did a very good job of moving the ball around. I thought we did a nice job of closing down what

they had.”

Berkland’s opening score came off a rebound. Junior transfer and Illinois commit Makena Silber ripped a hard shot that goalkeeper Erin McKinney initially saved, but deflected out to Berkland.

Berkland nearly added another goal in the second half, but her goal was wiped away on an offside penalty.

“I think we’re looking really good,” Berkland said of Prairie Ridge’s 3-0 start. “Our goal is always to win conference. We definitely want to try and beat (Crystal Lake) South and Huntley.

Bear gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead in the 15th minute when she followed her shot that clanked off the crossbar. Silber crossed the ball in from the right wing, and Hannah Stovall flicked it over to Bear, who was making a backpost run.

Bear’s second goal in the 25th was off a cross and assist from Stovall. “[Stovall] sent an amazing ball through,” Bear said. “It was laid right to my feet. That was all her.”

CRYSTAL LAKE – With a rainsoaked and muddy field, Prairie Ridge’s Jena Berkland said she felt as though she was playing parts of Monday’s nonconference girls soccer match against Belvidere North in slow motion.

“It was pretty hard,” Melissa Bear Berkland said. “My shoes are full of water.”

Despite the conditions, the junior forward gave her team a much-needed lift seconds after the first whistle, scoring on a rebound in the opening minute to give the Wolves a lead they never would concede.

TAR HEELS GET REDEMPTION

After last year’s heartbreak, UNC wins school’s 6th national title

The Associated Press GLENDALE, Ariz. – It’s OK, Carolina, you can open your eyes.

An unwatchable game turned into a beautiful night for the Tar Heels, who turned a free-throw contest into a championship they’ve been waiting an entire year to celebrate.

Justin Jackson delivered the go-ahead three-point play with 1:40 left Monday, and North Carolina pulled away for a 71-65 win over Gonzaga that washed away a year’s worth of heartache.

It was, in North Carolina’s words, a redemption tour – filled with extra time on the practice court and the weight room, all fueled by a devastating loss in last year’s title game on Kris Jenkins’ 3-point dagger at the buzzer for Villanova.

“I wanted to see this confetti fall on us, and we’re the winners,” said Carolina’s Joel Berry II, who led the Heels with 22 points. “We came out here and we competed. It came down to the last second, but we’re national champs now.”

Berry, along with most of Roy Williams’ players, returned for another run. To say everything went right for them at this Final Four would not be the truth.

The Tar Heels (33-7) followed a terrible-shooting night in the semifinal with an equally icecold performance in the final – going 4 for 27 from 3-point land and 26 for 73 overall.

Gonzaga, helped by eight straight points from Nigel Williams-Goss, took a two-point lead with 1:52 left, but the next possession was the game-changer.

Jackson took a zinger of a pass under the basket from Theo Pinson and converted the shot, then the ensuing free throw to take the lead for good. Moments later, Williams-Goss twisted an ankle and could not elevate for a

Isaiah Hicks made a basket to push the lead to three, then Kennedy Meeks, in foul trouble all night (who wasn’t?), blocked Williams-Goss’ shot and Jackson got a slam on the other end to put some icing on title No. 6 for the Tar Heels.

Williams got his third title, putting him one ahead of his mentor, Dean Smith, and behind only John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski and Adolph Rupp.

“I think of coach Smith, there’s no question,” Williams said. “I don’t think I should be mentioned in the same sentence with him. But we got three because I’ve got these guys with

me, and that’s all I care about right now – my guys.”

Berry recovered from ankle injuries to lead the Tar Heels, but needed 19 shots for his 22 points. Jackson had 16 on a 6-for-19 night and, overall, the Tar Heels actually shot a percentage point worse than they did in Saturday night’s win over Oregon.

Thank goodness for free throws. They went 15 for 26 from the line and, in many corners, this game will be remembered for these three men: Michael Stephens, Verne Harris and Mike Eades, the referees who called 27 fouls in the second half, completely busted up the flow of the game and sent

Meeks, Gonzaga’s 7-footers Przemek Karnowski and Zach Collins, and a host of others to the bench in foul trouble.

The game “featured” 52 free throws. Both teams were in the bonus with 13 minutes left.

Somehow, Collins was the only player to foul out.

Most bizarre sequence: With 8:02 left, Berry was called for a foul for (maybe) making contact with Karnowski and stripping the ball from the big man’s hands. But as Karnowski was flailing after the ball, he grabbed Berry around the neck and, after a long delay, got called for a flagrant foul of his own.

That resulted in four straight free throws, a 52-all tie

and booing from every corner of the massive Phoenix University Stadium.

Zags coach Mark Few handled it with class, calling the refs “three of the best officials in the entire country.”

He might have wanted further review on the scrum with 50 seconds left. The refs were taking heat on social media for calling a held ball, which gave possession to the Tar Heels, on a pile-up underneath the Carolina basket. It set up the Hicks layup to put Carolina ahead by three. One problem: Meeks’ right hand looked to be very much touching out of bounds while he was trying to rip away the ball.

Under team control with club options in his contract in 2019 and 2020, Quintana, an All-Star, would bring a hefty return in a trade.

The Sox were close on two trades during the offseason, one on Christmas Eve believed to involve closer David Robertson, that were killed at the goal line by two ownership groups.

Sox, Tigers to try Opening Day again Tuesday

The White Sox’s season opener with the Tigers on Monday at Guaranteed Rate Field was rained out and rescheduled for 1:10 p.m. Tuesday.

The game, which was scheduled for 3:10 p.m. with Jose Quintana opposing the Tigers’ Justin Verlander, was called off at 4:51. All tickets for the game, used or not used, are good for admission Tuesday, which was an open date. The Sox announced parking will be free for fans.

Rain had been forecast for much of the day, but the Sox still tried to get it in despite rain that began around noon.

During a break from the wet stuff, both teams went through opening ceremo-

nies, with Sox players entering the field in Mustang convertibles and introduced individually. Tigers players also were introduced, REO Speedwagon band members played the National Anthem and 2005 World Series hero Scott Podsednik threw out the first pitch.

After that, however, the players ducked into their clubhouses and did not return. More rain followed, dooming the opener for another day.

“We waited as long as we could, but we feel like we didn’t have a large enough window,’’ manager Rick Renteria said.

The Sox announced, “in consideration for how the postponement might disrupt the schedules of fans” that fans holding tickets for the opener also can exchange unused tickets for a free low-

er box or outfield reserve ticket for any home game, excluding May 29-31 vs. the Red Sox, June 24 vs. the A’s, June 26-29 vs. the Yankees, July 18-19 vs. the Dodgers and July 26-27 vs. the Cubs, based on availability.

Rodon update: General manager Rick Hahn indicated left-hander Carlos Rodon could miss another five or six weeks as he works his way back from upper biceps bursitis.

Rodon, who is in Arizona, is on a throwing program and will be re-evaluated Monday. He made one start during spring training and would be starting from ground zero again. Hahn said Rodon is “feeling good.”

“If there’s the least bit of discomfort or any stuff like that, we’re going to take a step back and start this thing

over,” Hahn said. “As I told Carlos directly, there’s zero reason for us to rush through this.”

“Surreal feeling” for Covey: Dylan Covey, being groomed as a fill-in in the rotation, stayed in Arizona on Sunday and threw about 75 pitches as he builds up endurance. Because of the rainout Monday, the Sox will need a fifth starter.

Covey, a Rule 5 pick from the A’s, originally was scheduled to throw in Arizona on Monday, but making his first Opening Day roster was so “surreal,” he asked to be in Chicago, so he threw Sunday instead.

“It’s my first one and they understood and made adjustments to the schedule to get me here,” he said. “I appreciate that.”

To tank or not to tank, that really wasn’t much of a question as far as general manager Rick Hahn was concerned when he mapped out a plan to rebuild the White Sox. “Here’s the rub with that,” Hahn said.

“There’s been a lot of successful rebuilds, even in our town. ... Many of them were predicated on bottoming out and getting high picks and spending good money and spending it well internationally.”

It all makes sense, and fielding a weak roster worked for the Cubs, who lost a lot and didn’t mind and stockpiled talent via the draft, as Hahn pointed out.

“The higher you pick, the better off you are,” Hahn said, stating the obvious. “That said, we’re a little bit different from some of the other clubs that had to embark on this process.”

That’s because the Sox’s roster wasn’t “totally barren of big league talent” when the rebuild began. Hahn said the rebuild could move more quickly if current players perform well now and enhance their trade value.

“So it’s not all black and white,” he said. “We don’t have to pick first, that’s not the intent of this 2017 season.

It certainly isn’t the focus of (manager) Ricky (Renteria) and the players.

“There’s value in that clubhouse that we aren’t just going to give away in the pursuit of the first pick of the draft.”

The biggest piece of value was lefthander Jose Quintana, who was scheduled to pitch against the Tigers in the first game of the season Monday.

or ‘We should or shouldn’t do this.’ ” And so the Sox take a team into the 2017 season that, although not positioned to win – they were six games under .500 with Chris Sale and Adam Eaton, and they are gone – but not looking like a 100-loss team, either.

“There is a lot of talent in this room,” Robertson said. “The White Sox made a lot of trades in the offseason. They acquired a lot of talent. I know they are calling this a rebuilding team, but we’re very capable of doing what we need to do to get to the playoffs. I honestly think that.”

Did you say playoffs? Robertson was asked.

“Yeah, what’s wrong with that? Right now we’re 0-0,” said Robertson, who pitched for the Yankees in the 2009 World Series. “If we finish 90-and-whatever, we have a good chance. There’s no reason we can’t do it. I’ve seen other teams get in the playoffs that you wouldn’t expect.

You just have to have a ticket to get it.”

There’s nothing wrong for the Sox’s big picture with having a motivated team. As Hahn said, the better they perform, the better for their plan.

Robertson has two years remaining on his contract at $12 million this season and $13 million in 2018. He was signed before the 2015 season as a needed piece for what the Sox thought was a contender.

And he could be dealt to a contender if the Sox find themselves far away from 90 wins at the trade deadline Aug. 1.

“That’s not my decision,” Robertson said. “I’m here to help my team win ball games. If I am traded, so be it. I can only do what I can do, and that’s show up and help finish ball games.”

NHL ices Olympics, says no to 2018 Games in South Korea

The NHL announced Monday that it will not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, refusing for the first time in 20 years to halt its season for three weeks so its stars can chase gold for their home countries.

From Alex Ovechkin and Jonathan Toews to Connor McDavid and Henrik Lundqvist, the world’s best players called playing in the Olympics important. The league decided otherwise.

Commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly informed the NHL Players’ Association that the matter was “officially closed” after weeks of speculation.

The NHLPA said in a statement that players are “extraordinarily disappointed and adamantly disagree with the NHL’s shortsighted decision.”

The NHL had allowed its players to participate in the past five Olympics dating to 1998, giving the Winter Games pro-level star power akin to the NBA players who participate in the Summer Olympics.

Georgetown hires Ewing as men’s basketball coach

WASHINGTON – Patrick Ewing put Georgetown basketball on the map, turning the Hoyas into a national power as the menacing force in the middle in the 1980s.

Three decades later, Ewing is the Big Man on Campus again.

Georgetown hired Ewing on Monday, bringing the Hoyas legend back to take over a program that had fallen on hard times over the past two seasons and helping the former All-American center finally realize his long-held dream of becoming a head coach.

Better without Wade? Butler: No

Dwyane Wade goes out with a dislocation in his right elbow nine games ago, and the Bulls take off. Not just the 6-3 record in Wade’s absence, either.

The numbers all across the board scream, “Who needs D-Wade?”

Well, Butler does.

“Playoff time is different,” Butler said, when asked about the idea of the Bulls functioning better with their veteran 35-year-old sidelined.

What Butler would admit is that Wade definitely changes the offensive dynamic on the floor in regular-season games.

“I wouldn’t say [we’re better without him],” Butler said. “I would say that we get to space the floor a little bit more. It’s one … and it’s not a bad thing, but it’s one half of the isolation piece because I do it, and whenever he and I both do it, the ball does stop, but he gets a lot of baskets doing that, so we’ll take that.”

Here’s what life without Wade has looked like for the team:

Before Wade went out, the Bulls’ offense was averaging 102.4 points a game, and in the nine games without him, it has averaged 108.5.

Butler’s season average was 23.9 points, 5.5 assists and 6.2 rebounds a game, but without Wade in this ninegame stretch, he’s averaging 28.5 points, 8.1 assists and 6.0 rebounds.

Then there’s Rajon Rondo, who has the ball in his hands more often without Wade on the court. Rondo was averaging 7.8 points, Jimmy Butler 6.7 assists and 5.1 rebounds for the season, and in the nine games without Wade, he was averaging 11.5 points, 8.4 assists and 6.1 rebounds.

“A different kind of basketball is coming,” Butler said with a laugh, pointing out that regular-season numbers mean nothing when playoff basketball is around the corner.

As Butler explained, the game slows down in the postseason. Because two teams are facing each other in a best-of-seven series, they learn each other’s weaknesses and how to exploit

them. One All-Star isolation player on the floor is good in the playoffs, but two? Better.

That’s what a Wade return will mean.

“Oh, I’m taking that,” Butler said of Wade possibly returning for postseason basketball. “I’ll get a lot of spotup jump shots with him on the floor running that action. If everybody is doing their job, taking that shot from the perimeter when they’re open, we’ll take that. Gladly.

“Because late in the games, especially playoff games, everybody isn’t going to be able to key on me and double me. Not when there’s another guy that can go get a bucket.”

Coach Fred Hoiberg shared a similar opinion.

“I don’t think that’s the case,” Hoiberg said, when asked whether he felt the team worked better Wade-less.

“Dwyane, especially when we get into fourth quarters, if we get a little bit stagnant, he’s the guy that we can give the ball to and good things happen.

“I’m proud of the guys for stepping up, especially our young guys when they’ve gotten this great opportunity to play.”

Anisimov. Desjardins also has Stanley Cup-winning experience. Tootoo brings gritty play and leadership, although his enforcer skills rarely come in to play in the playoffs, when fighting all but disappears. Jurco and Hinostroza are more offensive-minded, with speed and skill to burn.

Quenneville has been high on Hayden since he came to the Hawks from Yale, and the rookie seems to have a leg up on the competition. He set up Tootoo’s goal Sunday against Boston with hard work along the boards and a nice centering feed from behind the net. In his first handful of games, Hayden also proved he could hang with Toews and Richard Panik on the top line, should the need arise.

“He’s been fine no matter where he’s played,” Quenneville said. ”He gives us a little physicality, play along the walls, size, net presence. That’s how he has to play no matter who he’s playing with.”

Hayden’s confidence is growing with each game.

“It’s definitely nice getting a few games under my belt,” he said. “My linemates and the rest of the players have done a good job of helping me adjust to the pro game, and I think as I play a few more games here, I’ll get more confident.”

ST. LOUIS – The 2015 Cubs found their identity during an August sweep of the San Francisco Giants. They then went on to the National League Championship Series.

Last year’s team identity evolved over time, but it was shaped by Kyle Schwarber’s knee injury during the first week of the season and a slump before the All-Star break. That team had more than enough wherewithal to overcome those two challenges and go on to win the World Series.

This year? Although the Cubs have brought back essentially the same cast of characters from last year, team identities always change.

“This is a new journey, a new group,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said Sunday before the Cubs lost their season opener, 4-3, to the Cardinals. “I know we’re pretty much all the

In other words, reaction to any one win or loss can make it seem like the team plays 162 seasons a year, not 162 games.

Over the upcoming 161 seasons, er games, the Cubs’ identity will develop. After an off-day Monday, the Cubs and Cardinals will resume their three-game series Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.

“Every year an identity emerges, a new challenge emerges,” team president Theo Epstein said. “Every year you face adversity in baseball. We didn’t find out what ours was until the third game of the season last year. It started to reveal itself.

The same thing will happen this year. There is no lack of urgency or freshness or desire out there.

Once we get into the rhythm of the season after Opening Day, it will feel normal, and we’ll have our 2017 identity.”

Six forwards vying for 2 open playoff spots

mlazerus@suntimes.com Despite his tinkering tendencies, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville would much rather take a hands-off approach to his postseason lineup. In his ideal world, he would find the right 12 forwards and the right six defensemen, and their play would force him to leave them alone. No mid-game line juggling.

No shuttling players in and out of the lineup on a game-to-game basis.

That, of course, rarely happens.

Even during the Blackhawks’ three Stanley Cup runs, Quenneville constantly had moved things around. Just a few of the many examples include moving Dustin Byfuglien from forward to defense to forward again in 2010, putting Bryan Bickell on the top line in 2013, and scratching Antoine Vermette in the conference final in 2015.

This spring’s lineup seems pretty well established, with 10 forwards and six defensemen locked in. The top three lines (assuming Artem Anisimov

returns for the postseason, as expected) and all three pairings are well-established.

But there still is a fierce competition for the final two spots in the lineup, as six players – Andrew Desjardins, John Hayden, Vinnie Hinostroza, Tomas Jurco, Dennis Rasmussen and Jordin Tootoo – are fighting for the two wing spots on the fourth line. And they have three regular-season games left in which to audition.

“We’re wide open as far as guys pushing and looking to take advantage of it here,” Quenneville said. “Nothing’s set in stone.”

Of those six players, each has his strengths and weaknesses. Hayden has been impressive in his 10 games, giving the Hawks a big, physical body with some offensive punch. Desjardins and Rasmussen are versatile defenders who can take faceoffs, and can take some of the penalty-killing burden off Jonathan Toews, Marian Hossa and
