Deadly traffic stops could mean changes to driver’s ed

RALEIGH, N.C. – Deadly encounters between police officers and motorists have lawmakers across the country thinking driver’s education should require students to be taught what to do in a traffic stop.

A North Carolina bill would require instructors to describe “appropriate interactions with law enforcement officers.” Illinois passed a similar law recently, and another awaits the Virginia governor’s signature. Mississippi, New Jersey and Rhode Island also are considering them.

Many lawmakers want to make police interactions more transparent and improve community relations, in particular with people who feel unjustly targeted or mistreated because of their skin color.

Most don’t pretend to legislate exactly how drivers should react, leaving the details to be worked out by state law enforcement or education and driver’s license agencies. The 2017 “Rules of the Road” for Illinois, published in February, could provide a model, making detailed “suggestions” about proper driver behavior.

“The goal here is to reduce what could be a tense situation that can be very stressful on both sides,” said Dave Druker, with the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, which oversees licensing 2.2 million new and veteran drivers annually.

The overall message? Use “a common-sense approach” and don’t be confrontational, Druker said.

accountability group SAFE Coalition NC, said it could help young drivers control their emotions at traffic stops. But he said North Carolina needs companion legislation “so that police officers can understand to control their emotions” as well, and be trained that racial profiling is unlawful.

Dawkins said that even drivers who have been taught to show “all kinds of respect” could be vulnerable if an officer sees their hands move from the steering wheel: “I make a quick movement, that that quick movement can result in me losing my life,” he said.

Law enforcement officers worry about exactly the same situation: When motorists reach under their seats to get a driver’s license, officers have to consider whether they’re reaching for a gun, said Eddie Caldwell, executive director of the North Carolina Sheriffs Association, whose organization has strongly endorsed the North Carolina legislation.

The Illinois guidelines, now included in expanded form in driver licensing materials, encourage drivers to avoid this situation by keeping both hands clearly in sight on the steering wheel “until the officer instructs them otherwise.”

Virginia Democratic Delegate Jeion Ward said her measure, which the General Assembly overwhelmingly passed and is now on Gov. Terry McAulliffe’s desk, aims to make sure all young drivers are properly informed.

“Heaven help us if they are getting information off of YouTube or the internet,” Ward said.

“We just have to make sure that our young drivers have the correct information so simple infractions will not become something more serious.”

Nonprofit animal sanctuary receives donations after mobile truck giveaway in Crystal Lake

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Debra Heath of Oakwood Hills hosts food giveaways Friday mornings at Nunda Township Hall in Crystal Lake. The food distribution helps feed about 75 people a week, Heath said.

“We go through the meat to make sure it’s still edible, make sure the packages aren’t damaged or opened and determine how much food we have as opposed to how many people show up so we have enough for everybody,” said Heath, who is a member of the First United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake and runs a mobile food truck sponsored by the church.

But after everyone’s gotten their food, her efforts don’t end there.

Whenever there’s still remaining food after the event, she drives about an hour north and takes the leftovers

up to an animal sanctuary in Wisconsin to help feed the animals. Heath started donating the food to Valley of the Kings Animal Sanctuary and Retreat about three years ago.

“We always had this leftover food, especially leftover bread, and I had no place to put it besides throwing it away,” Heath said. “We usually bring two to three boxes of bread. And another thing I do bring out when we have it is meat that’s been exposed to germs. Meat that can’t be given to people, but it’s okay for animals.”

Heath said she goes up there just about every Friday.

“It’s an amazing thing. It’s really fun to feed tigers chicken legs,” Heath said.

Established in 1973, the animal sanctuary is run by Jill Carnegie in Sharon, Wisconsin, with her husband, Jim.

MCC to offer trip to Irish-themed show

CRYSTAL LAKE – The McHenry County College Trips and Tours Program offers a day trip to an Irish-themed show and meal at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 15.

The mansion is a National Historic Landmark. Participants can get in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day as they enjoy an Irish-themed show featuring the Celtic band Mulligan Stew and an Irish meal. The cost is $135.

nlinhart@shawmedia.com McHENRY – Those who want to play slots in a quiet environment while drinking beer can do so at a new video gambling parlor in McHenry.

Big Fran’s Boardwalk Gaming officially opened Feb. 16, offering customers gambling machines, food and alcoholic beverages. The new gambling lounge is at 3401 W. Elm St., the former location of Stuc’s Pizza in McHenry, which closed in January and also was owned by Fritz Larsen.

“What sets Big Fran’s aside from the other gaming locations is that this place is relaxing, has

Big Fran’s in McHenry has five video slot machines and a full bar. As for food, Larsen said customers can order from a small menu that includes frozen pizza products from Halftime Bar & Grill in Johnsburg,

which Larsen also owns.

“We also offer free pop, water and snacks to our customers,” Larsen said.

The McHenry venue is Larsen’s second Big Fran’s location.

He opened one in Johnsburg last September. Both are named for his mother, Frances, who

died in June 2015.

Since the Johnsburg location opened, Larsen said he has donated 5 percent of his proceeds from that venue to local charities in his mother’s name.

“In three months, we were able to donate just under $1,000 to three different charities,” Larsen said. “I plan to donate at the McHenry venue as well.”

Larsen said the money is going to the McHenry Pigtail League, Home of the Sparrow and FISH of McHenry Food Pantry.

“I’m guessing between the two locations I should be giving back anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000 a year,” Larsen said.

Expanding his brand, Larsen said he’s looking at adding another location in McHenry County and one in Lake County.

Big Fran’s in McHenry is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Sundays through Thursdays and from 10 a.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays.

Students prepare to compete in McHenry County Spelling Bee

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – The McHenry County Spelling Bee is almost here, and some students are using traditional studying methods, while others are using more unorthodox ones.

“One of the ways I’ve been preparing is by dribbling a basketball or passing a soccer ball around with my dad, while also trying to spell,” said Sam Larsen, an eighth-grade student at Cary Junior High School.

“It helps me focus a little bit more and practice sports at the same time, since I play both soccer and basketball,” Larsen added.

With his own unique approach, Larsen said he’s been studying really hard and is excited to be a contestant.

“I want to do as well as I can,” he said.

The 2017 McHenry County Spelling Bee will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday in McHenry County College’s Luecht Conference Center, Room B170. The event is sponsored by the Regional Office of Education, MCC and the Northwest Herald.

student at Northwood Middle School in Woodstock, said she doesn’t have any specific strategies when studying.

“I’m just constantly looking over definitions and the pronunciations of the words so when they pronounce it I know the word they are talking about,” Freeman said.

Students had to compete in school and regional spelling bees to get to this point. Freeman said some tricky words she came across were “tchotchke” and “jnana,” but she was able to spell them

both.

Also participating in the spelling bee are two students from Crystal Lake Community Consolidated School District 47.

“I’m studying by using the packets and an app called Quizlets. I’m really nervous, but mostly excited,” said Trini Fend, a sixth-grade student at Lundahl Middle School in Crystal Lake.

“I used the resources that are on the Scripps website, and my mom found a bunch of new words for me to study,” said Serena Huberty, an eighth-grader at Bernotas Middle School in Crystal Lake.

Huberty was a contestant in last year’s McHenry County Spelling Bee and came in third place.

“I’m hoping to do better than last year, and I really want to get first this time,” Huberty said.

A total of 12 students from McHenry County will compete in Wednesday’s spelling bee. The winner will move on to compete in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, which takes place from May 28 to June 3 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

Residents weigh in on Fox River Corridor Plan at Cary open house

hprokop@shawmedia.com CARY – About 50 people came through an open house Thursday at Cary Village Hall to give their feedback on the Fox River Corridor Plan in Lake and McHenry counties.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and the McHenry County Planning and Development Department are working with other local governments to create a plan to improve water quality, multimodal transportation access, commerce and recreation and open space along the Fox River, according to CMAP’s website.

“This is the first time we’re able to really hear from the public in terms of what they would like to see change in the future or remain the same in the future,” CMAP associate planner Kate Evasic said at the open house.

The project focuses on the Fox River area spanning from Route 176 in Burtons Bridge to Cold Springs Road in Cary, and includes portions of Cary, Fox River Grove, Island Lake, Lake Barrington, Oakwood Hills, Port Barrington, Tower

Lakes and Trout Valley.

At the open house Thursday, CMAP representatives were available to answer questions on the plan, and residents provided comments on the strengths and weaknesses of the river in categories such as transportation, natural resources and business and tourism on the river.

Rachel Young, a Fox River Grove resident who has lived on the river in Cary and Fox River Grove, said she would like to see more family-friendly dining on the river and safety improvements to congested areas.

“I just think that the Fox River is a unique recourse that we have here in Chicagoland, and it’s great to see that there’s an organization that’s preserving it and promoting it both for recreational use and environmental use,” Young said.

Some comments written next to maps of the Fox River at the open house included not developing Jack’s Channel to preserve wildlife, and adding bike and pedestrians paths to cross the river at Route 14 and Rawson Bridge Road.

back and identify common themes in what residents have said they would like to see in the area in the next 10 to 15 years.

“Because we’re talking about an area that spans seven villages, two counties, with McHenry County Conservation District land and Lake County Forest Preserve land, it’s going to be a lot of focusing on how the different jurisdictions can coordinate activities,” Evasic said.

A draft of the plan is expected to be completed in August and later would be adopted by McHenry County and possibly Lake County so recommendations can start to be implemented, Evasic said.

The project is funded through the Local Technical Assistance program, which provides planning assistance to communities. CMAP has a $100,000 budget to create the plan, and McHenry County contributed a local match of $20,000, Evasic said.

“We take in abused, unwanted, retired and injured exotic animals,” Carnegie said. “They come from a variety of places.”

Carnegie described Heath’s efforts as a “godsend” because they help with the sanctuary’s feed bill. Carnegie said the sanctuary’s budget is $350,000 a year, with the majority of that money going toward food for the animals.

Valley of the Kings also accepts donations from anyone who is willing to give. Carnegie said those interested in donating can drop off donations at the sanctuary’s gate.

“We take people’s freezer-burnt meat, but do not accept pork, sheep, lamb or fish,” Carnegie said. “We can also use blankets and towels, because we are always in need of them.”

He passed away peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2017, in Crystal Lake.

Skip was an electrical engineer and manager for Motorola Solutions for 35 years. He enjoyed spending time with amateur radio, dog agility training, and amateur photography.

Skip loved the outdoors, biking, camping, sailing and taking trips with his family.

The newlywed couple welcomed their first born son, Mark. In 1955, they relocated to the Wonder Lake area. Soon they received another gift, a daughter, Kristine. With her husband being on the road for work, Yvonne became very sociable with her neighbors. To become more independent, in her thirties, Yvonne finally learned how to drive. At the age of 40, Arthur and Yvonne were blessed once again with another son, Kirk, who she said always kept her young.

Throughout her lifetime, Yvonne held different jobs, including selling Amway and hydroponic plants and had her own greenhouse.

Yvonne always had many friends and enjoyed spending time with them doing a variety of activities. She was always concerned for others, worried of their well-being, and always willing to lend a hand to help anyone.

Yvonne was an old-fashioned gal who didn’t care for modern technology much. She stayed active by continuing her cardiac rehab until her health declined in the past year.

Richmond has stories worth telling LOCAL HISTORY Kurt Begalka John Shiel has become enamored with a town he worked near for years but never lived in.

But he believes that detachment from Richmond gives him a unique perspective to talk about – and the many treasures a simple walkabout will reveal. Starting April 22 he intends to do just that with a new series he’s calling “Sidewalk Stories.”

Shiel, a retired interpretative naturalist with McHenry County College, will share some of Richmond’s most compelling stores during a 2-mile walk along the village’s sidewalks and roadsides.

“I got yapping with people about the lovely nature of the town, and I just talked myself into doing this. It was pre-organic,” Shiel said. “I’ve been around the town for almost 40 years, even though I lived in Johnsburg and now Wonder Lake. I know that it is dripping with cool, old stuff.”

Sidewalk tours run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on eight Saturdays starting next month. Other walks will be May 13, June 3, July 1, Aug. 26, Sept.

16, Oct. 14 and Nov. 4. In certain cases, stories could be tailored to fit into appropriate themes, such as patriotism on the July 1 walk.

“When I went to Ireland and spent a month touring there, the guides had a different style than I had ever seen,” Shiel said. “It gave me some framework, some techniques, about how I might do it here. It was fascinating. It opened my eyes … and my imagination.”

All of the walking tours will start from the old wooden bridge on George Street behind Anderson’s Candy Shop.

“After a loop around Richmond’s antique downtown, bridges and walkways, we’ll pass through a remarkable gallery of very impressive Victorian homes,” Shiel said. “Add in a couple of old churches, a retired school and the settlement’s original burial ground, and we’ll end up at the old farmhouses on Broadway out in McConnellville, where Richmond truly began.”

Ample parking stretches along the railroad trail from George Street north to Broadway Street. The best access for most drivers will be to turn west off Main Street/Route 12 onto Broadway.

The boon behind legalized casinos has been the tax rates; gross receipts on the state’s most lucrative boats are taxed at 50 percent.

But if new casinos are introduced, existing gambling houses would suffer, so the measure adjusts the tax rate to as low as 16 percent for table games and 20 percent for slot machine revenue.

The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, the Legislature’s bipartisan fiscal agent, found that annual revenue would be $560 million, only about 18 percent more than currently collected.

SPRINGFIELD – A proposal to expand casino gambling in Illinois would put new casinos in six locations, raising revenue for a cash-strapped state that’s been without a spending plan for two years.

The massive gambling expansion is part the wide-ranging “grand bargain” to end Illinois’ two-year deadlock over an annual spending plan. Although the grand bargain was derailed this past week, the casinos plan did get the endorsement of the Senate.

The measure is in the mix to raise revenue and draw votes from areas of the state that could cash in on what has been a lucrative industry for a quarter-century.

Despite Senate approval, the gambling legislation can’t move forward unless accompanied by the dozen or so other bills in the grand bargain. The overall spending deal is on hold after Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner voiced opposition to remaining parts of the plan.

Farmers uncertain how weather could affect crops

CARBONDALE – Unseasonably high temperatures have allowed Illinois farmers to work in the fields, but many of them are wondering how the weather will affect their crops and orchards.

The Illinois State Climatologist Office said February’s statewide average temperature was 40.1 degrees as of Tuesday. Warmer-than-normal temperatures are forecast for the first half of March, too.

State climatologist Jim Angel said the temperatures have raised concerns that a sudden freeze could damage Illinois

orchards and other crops.

“Seventy-degree weather belongs in April, not February,” Angel said.

Some farmers are wondering whether the recent warm weather is a good thing, University of Illinois Extension Office director Aaron Dufelmeier said.

“Over the past couple of weeks, the almost summerlike weather has allowed farmers to put on anhydrous and do some early spring tillage,” Dufelmeier said.

“Unlike most years, the soil conditions are more favorable than the so-called typical year.”

Coliseum to remain closed through Illinois State Fair

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Fairground’s Coliseum won’t open its doors to guests and shows this year – not even for its namesake fair in August.

Mayors warn about cut to Great Lakes initiative

ing Great Lakes region mayors in the U.S. and Canada is sounding the alarm against potentially drastic cuts to an ecological recovery initiative for the Great Lakes.

The Trump administration’s potential cuts to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative were reported by the Detroit Free Press last week. They would slash annual funding for the $300 million program to $10 million. The initiative combats invasive species, curbs nutrient-fueled algae blooms, cleans up toxic messes and restores sensitive fish and wildlife habitat.

“Cuts of this magnitude would be devastating to the efforts of our two countries over the past five decades to restore the resource,” said David Ullrich, executive director of The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative. His group represents mayors from more than 125 U.S. and Canadian cities in the Great Lakes basin.

Republican leaders of Congress appeared willing to honor the president’s request, but the move has potential risks for the president, particularly if the House and Senate intelligence committees unearth damaging information about Trump, his aides or his associates.

Trump claimed in a series of tweets without evidence Saturday that his predecessor had tried to undermine him by tapping the telephones at Trump Tower, the New York skyscraper where Trump based his campaign and transition operations, and maintains a home.

Obama’s director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said nothing matching Trump’s claims had taken place.

“Absolutely, I can deny it,” said Clapper, who left government when Trump took office in January. Other representatives for the former president also denied Trump’s allegation.

The FBI has asked the Justice Department to dispute Trump’s allegations, a U.S. official told The Associated Press on Sunday. The official wasn’t authorized to discuss the request by name and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

No such statement has been issued by the Justice Department. DOJ spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores declined to comment Sunday, and an FBI spokesman also did not com-

The New York Times reported that senior American officials say FBI Director James Comey has argued that the claim must be corrected by the Justice Department because it falsely insinuates that the FBI broke the law.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said without elaborating Sunday that Trump’s instruction to Congress was based on “very troubling” reports “concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election.”

Spicer did not respond to inquiries about the reports he cited in announcing the request.

Spicer said the White House wants the congressional committees to “exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016.” He said there would be no further comment until the investigations are completed, a statement that House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi took offense to and likened to autocratic behavior.

“It’s called a wrap-up smear. You make up something. Then you have the press write about it. And then

you say, everybody is writing about this charge. It’s a tool of an authoritarian,” Pelosi said.

Spicer’s chief deputy, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said she thinks Trump is “going off of information that he’s seen that has led him to believe that this is a very real potential.”

Josh Earnest, who was Obama’s press secretary, said presidents do not have authority to unilaterally order the wiretapping of American citizens, as Trump has alleged was done to him. FBI investigators and Justice Department officials must seek a federal judge’s approval for such a step.

Earnest accused Trump of leveling the allegations to distract from the attention being given to campaign-season contacts by Trump aides with a Russian official, including campaign adviser Jeff Sessions before he resigned from the Senate to become attorney general. The FBI is investigating those contacts, as is Congress.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement that the panel “will follow the evidence where it leads, and we will continue to be guided by the intelligence and facts as we compile our findings.”

Tax audits plummet as IRS makes cuts

WASHINGTON – As millions of Americans file their income tax returns, their chances of getting audited by the IRS have rarely been so low.

The number of people audited by the IRS in 2016 year dropped for the sixth straight year, to just over 1 million. The last time so few people were audited was 2004. Since then, the U.S. has added about 30 million people.

The IRS blames budget cuts as money for the agency shrunk from $12.2 billion in 2010 to $11.2 billion last year.

Over that period, the agency has lost more than 17,000 employees, including nearly 7,000 enforcement agents. A little more than 80,000 people work at the IRS. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said budget cuts are costing the federal government between $4 billion and $8 billion a year in uncollected taxes.

“We are the only agency if you give us more people and money, we give you more money back,” Koskinen said in an interview.

So is it safe to cheat on your taxes?

Not necessarily, according to tax experts.

people to cheat,” said Joseph Perry, a partner at the accounting firm Marcum.

“I think there are a certain group of people that will always try to push the envelope to get away with things that they think they can get away with.”

As Koskinen put it: “If you’re a taxpayer, you don’t want to roll the roulette wheel and have the little white ball land on your number because then we’re not very happy.”

Most people don’t have much of an opportunity to cheat on their taxes because the IRS collects a lot of information to verify taxpayers’ finances.

Employers report wages, banks report interest, brokerages report capital gains and lenders report mortgage interest.

In 2016, the number of people audited by the IRS dropped by 16 percent from the year before. Just 0.7 percent of individuals were audited, either in person

or by mail. That’s the lowest audit rate since 2003.

The higher your income, the more likely you are to be audited. The IRS audited 1.7 percent of returns that reported more than $200,000 in income. Agents audited 5.8 percent of returns that reported more than $1 million in income.

Both audit rates were steep declines from the year before.

The most well-known audit in Washington is one on President Donald Trump, who has cited it in refusing to release his tax returns. The IRS, however, has said an audit would not prevent an individual from releasing the returns.

Corporate audits were down by 17 percent last year. Just 0.49 percent of corporations were audited, the lowest rate in at least a decade.

Republicans in Congress began cutting money at the IRS after they took control of both the House and Senate in the 2010 elections. They became more enthusiastic about the spending cuts after it became public that the agency had improperly singled out conservative political groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax-exempt status during the 2010 and 2012 elections.

Koskinen was not at the IRS when

the political groups were mistreated, but some Republicans in Congress have been unhappy with his cooperation in their investigations.

When asked about IRS money, many Republican lawmakers inevitably mention the mistreatment of conservative groups.

“Go look at all the areas where they’ve wasted money, mismanaged taxpayer resources,” said Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. “Not to mention the fact that, you know, one of the reasons we went after them so hard is they did target people for their political views.”

Democrats argue that it’s a costly move.

“You know, when somebody doesn’t pay, that means that others pay more,” said Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, the top Democrat on tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

“But I think there’s no question that the majority [Republicans] here and apparently the president, they have had a target on the IRS.” Tony Reardon, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents IRS workers, questioned Trump’s proposal to increase military spending by billions while the GOP targets the IRS.

SELMA, Ala. – Throngs of people converged in the city of Selma, Alabama, for the annual re-enactment of a key event in the civil rights movement.

Sunday marks the 52nd anniversary of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge over the Alabama River in Selma.

On March 7, 1965, African-Americans seeking voting rights launched a march across the bridge en route to Montgomery but were attacked by police. That violent episode became known as “Bloody Sunday.”

The march is credited with helping build momentum for passage of the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. Attendees included the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Congresswoman Terri Sewell, Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill and North Carolina NAACP President Dr. William Barber.

WFSA-TV reported that a number of Selma church services kicked off Bridge Crossing Jubilee events including at the historic Brown Chapel where speakers remembered the battle for African American voting rights and the role the Chapel played in that fight.

Merrill’s speech however upset some audience members. He told on-

“Standing on this historic ground, where people died for voting rights, we cannot accept this hypocrisy of voter suppression,” Barber said.

The service continued, despite the moments of tension, with Congresswoman Sewell calling for unity and activism and other leaders asking for respect and peace.

This year’s march re-enactment was planned despite a dispute over city fees that forced organizers to change plans for a festival-like event leading up to the bridge-crossing commemoration.

The city asked for thousands of dollars to cover the costs of police, fire and cleanup workers, but Sen. Hank Sanders, D-Selma, and other leaders of the event refused to pay.

Instead, they moved a music festival to private property rather than holding it on a blocked city street as in past years.

Organizers of an annual Civil War re-enactment held in Selma canceled their event when presented with a similar bill from the city.

This year’s crowd for the bridge crossing was expected to be far smaller than the one in 2015, when then-President Barack Obama and his family led tens of thousands of marchers on the 50th anniversary weekend.

The wrong plans for health care “We’re going to have insurance for everybody,” President Donald Trump told The Post in January.

“There was a philosophy in some circles that if you can’t pay for it, you don’t get it. That’s not going to happen with us.” Yet that is exactly the direction Republicans appear to be heading.

In his first speech to a joint session of Congress, Trump stressed providing “access” to coverage rather than re-articulating the goal of insuring everyone, embracing rhetoric Republicans have used to defend policies that would likely reduce the number of Americans with decent health-care coverage. The president then seemed to endorse the broad outlines of the sorts of repeal-and-replace schemes that mainstream Republicans such as House Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.) have backed.

It still may be too early to say what Trump really favors. The White House says he will release a proposal within the next few weeks. Yet the president’s thinking on health care long has been scattered. During and after the campaign, Trump condemned both high deductibles and high premiums, seemingly promising to lower both. In fact, these two figures generally move in opposite directions, and only spending massive amounts of federal money would change that. Tuesday night, he called for a fantasy plan that would “expand choice, increase access, lower cost, and at the same time provide better health care.”

Certainly, Republicans have not proposed any such magical plan. A fair reading of every major Republican replacement plan so far – including the one the president’s Health and Human Services secretary authored and the one that Ryan proposed last summer – would reduce access to decent coverage.

The latest example is a draft bill circulated among lawmakers in Feburary and leaked at the end of last week. Though a new draft is apparently under discussion, the February plan tracks with earlier Republican proposals, which is to say that it adjusts benefits toward healthier and wealthier people, even at the risk of leaving low-income Americans out of the system.

Though the bill contains some attractive provisions, such as limiting irrational tax breaks for employer-sponsored health insurance, it makes several cardinal errors. Obamacare linked the federal subsidies that health-care consumers get to people’s incomes. The GOP would break this link, showering benefits on wealthy insurance-buyers who do not need them and shortchanging poorer people who may well find themselves unable to afford adequate coverage.

As Trump belatedly noted the other day, healthcare policy is complex. But the essential questions facing Republicans remain simple. Will as many or more people be covered under an Obamacare replacement plan? Can the GOP make such a commitment without severely degrading coverage quality? So far, Republicans have the wrong answers.

IT’S YOUR WRITE Hard to be proud

To the Editor: I am the daughter of Polish immigrants who were welcomed to this country and worked hard to make a better life for themselves and their children. They struggled and worked hard to provide for their families. My two brothers fought in two wars having the scars to prove their love of this country and to keep it free. We were “Proud To Be Americans” then and I am, to this day, proud of all that my folks and siblings did to keep this country free and welcoming.

Today, I am not proud to be an American. Our leadership has become extremely hateful and divisive. We have a leader who condemns everyone except Russia. We are having our freedoms taken away. We have a leader who mocks the handicapped, degrades a prisoner of war along with one who died for his adopted country not to mention his low regard for women. I am ashamed of America and what it has become and can’t understand how anyone with a conscience can favor such leadership. Yes, we are all discouraged with Washington and the leadership we have had but now it is even worse than I can ever remember. And the hate they are encouraging and represent is heartbreaking.

I am a senior citizen with not too many years ahead of me. I pray daily something changes in this country and that I can again say I am “proud to be an American” before I go on to my next life.

Is Hultgren hiding?

To the Editor: Where is Rep. Hultgren? There is legislation threatening to remove regulations on the financial institutions, supported by Rep. Hultgren; legislation allowing retirement fund advisors to not consider their clients first in HR4293, supported by Rep. Hultgren; removing regulations that protect clean water HJR 38, supported by Rep. Hultgren; talk of changes in health care, social security, changes on relations with Israel ... where is Rep. Hultgren?

As the president appoints cabinet members and advisors who threaten the environment, public schools and civil rights, I have heard nothing from Rep. Hultgren.

Many representatives are conducting townhall meetings during their recess. I did not see any notification on Rep. Hultgren’s.

I also noticed that Rep. Hultgren only has one office in his district. It is in Campton Hills. It seems he should get around more if he only is going to have one office.

I feel like I’m looking at a “Where’s Waldo?” picture. It feels to me that Rep. Hultgren does not like to engage with his constituents. It seems like he is taking us and, particularly McHenry County, for granted.

When someone is hiding, it makes you wonder ... why?

Eight years ago, amid the financial collapse known as the Great Recession, America broke up with its 43rd president with such relief it might as well have dumped his clothes on the White House lawn and screamed from an open window “get out!”

In 2008, at the close of his second term, President George W. Bush’s approval ratings had plunged to 25 percent, among the lowest in presidential history next to Harry Truman and Richard Nixon. His would-be Republican successor, candidate John McCain, actively distanced himself from the Bush administration and comedians relentlessly mocked the man.

So during his presidential “afterlife,” as his wife calls it, the eight years of America’s rebound relationship with cool guy Barack Obama, Bush eased into an existence of purposeful inconspicuousness.

He wrote a book, as most past presidents do, learned to paint and said nothing controversial.

He left former aides to defend Bush, the legacy and Bush, the man. Most of those who worked with him adored him and were often baffled that others didn’t.

It would be an exaggeration to say that his liberal critics are now seeing in him what his closest aides saw all along.

In the first few months of 2017 and amid a book tour that landed him glowing spots on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” and in People magazine, Bush is getting a reappraisal.

Time helped. So did President Donald Trump.

Some of the rethinking of Bush stems not from anything Bush has said or done, but simply from the contrast with President Trump, a comparison bolstered by his recent appearances on talk shows and in news segments.

After the “Ellen” show posted a video of the former president joking about his inner “Rembrandt” and learning to paint, viewers flooded the comments with unexpected praise.

“A few years ago I would have rolled my eyes at the [sight] of this man, but 6 weeks of Trump makes W look like a pretty decent guy,” one woman wrote.

“Perspective is a funny thing.”

Added another: “I used to be a big critic of him and still don’t agree with much of what he did while in office. But, given who is now in office and how scary 45 is making the world, I’ve come to actually like this man.”

It was an idea comedian Aziz Ansari explored in January during his monologue as host of Saturday Night Live, the same show that spent years writing unflattering skits of President Bush and has since turned its humor to a new GOP target.

“George W Bush made a speech after 9/11, and it really helped,” Ansari said. “Things changed. . . . He said Islam is peace.”

The monologue came one day after Trump’s inaugural address, which took on a dark and menacing tone, echoing his campaign rhetoric, which was often critical of Muslims and immigrants.

Ansari compared Trump’s language to that of Bush in 2001, when he walked shoeless through the Islamic Center of Washington six days after Islamist terrorists flew planes into the Pentagon and World

Trade Center, killing thousands of people. Flanked

by Muslim men and women, the president delivered a unifying speech that was praised by both parties and skyrocketed his approval ratings.

“It was about basic human decency and remembering why the country was founded in the first place,” Ansari said.

And, by his own admission, the comic said he realized he had found himself in a perplexing position.

“What the hell has happened?” he said during the monologue. “I’m sitting here wistfully watching old George W. Bush speeches?’ Just sitting there like, ‘What a leader he was! ... He guided us with his eloquence!’”

Some of the harshest criticism lobbed at Bush as he left office was about the Iraq War. Bush defended his decision to invade Iraq, even though his administration misrepresented the existence of Saddam Hussein’s “weapons of mass destruction.”

But some one-time critics, who would never have credited Bush with wisdom, are now looking to Bush for just that. And to a large extent, he has delivered, appearing to criticize Trump in a way he never did Obama.

In an interview with Today’s Matt Lauer, for example, Bush defended the news media against Trump’s “enemies of the American people” attack.

“We needed the media to hold people like me to account,” said Bush. “Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power.”

“I think we all need answers,” he said, when asked about Russia’s attempt to intervene in the election through hacking. Asked whether there should be a special prosecutor, he said “I’m not sure the right avenue to take. I am sure, though that that question needs to be answered.”

Bush later said he didn’t intend for his comments to be construed as criticism of Trump.

Most endearing, perhaps, was the open affection for Michelle Obama that Bush has displayed during his book tour (“Portraits of Courage,” featuring his paintings of post-9/11 veterans.)

The fondness took flight online last fall when, at the opening ceremony of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., cameras caught Michelle Obama and President Bush in a brief but clearly warm embrace.

The New York Times called it “the embrace seen round the world,” sharply symbolic at a time of political strife.

“That surprised everybody,” Bush said on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” Thursday when the host asked about his “good friend” Michelle Obama.”That’s what is so weird about society today, that people on opposite sides of the political spectrum could actually like each other.”

In an interview with People magazine, Bush said: “When I saw her, it was a genuine expression of affection.”

Their friendship seemed to remind onlookers that even if they disagreed with Bush the president, there was no harm in feeling warm toward Bush the man.

Hep C testing unnecessary for most Dear Doctor: My doctor recommends I be tested for hepatitis C, and I’ve also seen commercials urging people to get tested for the virus – but I have no risk factors. Is it really necessary to get tested for it?

Dear Reader: The majority of people who become acutely infected with hepatitis C will not have any symptoms. Of people who acquire the infection, 15 percent to 45 percent will clear it on their own; that is, their immune system will ward off the virus.

However, anywhere from 55 percent to 85 percent of patients will develop a chronic infection and a chronic inflammation of the liver.

Many of them won’t have symptoms until the chronic infection leads to cirrhosis of the liver. That development can occur more than 20 years after the onset of infection.

New cases of hepatitis C are rare, with only 0.3 per 100,000 individuals, and are largely caused by injecting drugs via a needle used by someone with the virus. This practice was most common in the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, and those at most risk were born between 1945 and 1965.

Based on this data, a 2012 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended a one-time testing for hepatitis C for those born in the United States between 1945 and 1965, saying that it would reduce death rates and liver cancer rates from the disease.

In years past, treatment of hepatitis C consisted of interferon-based therapy. This type of therapy was poorly tolerated by patients, with horrible side effects from the drug, and it cured patients only 45 percent of the time.

New antiviral therapies for hepatitis C do not contain interferon and are well-tolerated. They are simple to take, with once-

But the cost of the treatment is exorbitant. One 12-week course costs $94,500; another course of treatment costs $84,000. Due to the costs, insurers will not cover these medications unless there is some form of liver inflammation.

Now think about the population of people born between 1945 and 1965. These patients are between 52 and 72, and many of those at high risk have already seen a doctor and had multiple liver tests.

The likelihood of them being newly diagnosed with hepatitis C is low, and the likelihood that the infection will lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer if liver enzymes have been persistently normal is similarly low.

By screening people who have little risk of the complications of hepatitis C, we will be diagnosing more people without allowing them to get treatment.

Because of that, the focus on hepatitis C screening should be on those with high risk of infection and a high likelihood of transmitting hepatitis C to others. With injection drug use increasing in this country, this population needs to be actively screened.

If you’ve been seeing a doctor regularly, have had no previous risk factors and are not at a high risk of new infection, there may be no need to be screened for hepatitis C.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My ex-boyfriend and I broke up Jeanne two years ago.

Phillips We were together for nearly three years. A year into our relationship, we rescued a puppy. We broke up when she was 2. Since then, we have shared her on and off.

This arrangement worked fine because we have both been single.

I am now in a new relationship and feel that my ex and I should cut ties. We recently had a falling out, but he still wants to share the dog “until she is no longer in the picture.”

Abby, I don’t feel that it’s feasible for us to continue sharing our dog for the next 12 to 15 years. My ex has post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and I know she helps him.

However, I feel like I can provide a better home for her and give her more attention.

Now South has no diamond losers because if necessary he can ruff them.

So he uses Blackwood to uncover the heart ace, heart king and spade king.

When he finds them opposite, he bids seven hearts.

How should the play proceed after West leads the diamond king?

The only danger is a 4-0 trump split. If East has all four hearts, declarer is down. But if West has them, South is safe as long as he starts with the trump queen, keeping dummy’s ace and king over West’s jack and 10. Declarer continues with a second trump, winning West’s 10 with the king. He returns to hand with, say, a spade, plays a heart to dummy’s nine, draws West’s last trump and claims.

South’s 13 tricks are two spades, five hearts, one diamond and five clubs.

Note that without the descriptive splinter bid, seven hearts is effectively unbiddable.

akantecki@shawmedia.com Taylor Glenn’s college football stock started to take off the summer leading up to his senior year.

Glenn participated at combines at Northern Illinois and Northwestern, and there is where college coaches first really took notice of the 6-foot-2, 250-pound defensive lineman from Alden-Hebron.

“He opened some eyes there,” 14-year Alden-Hebron coach John Lalor said.

“He was the ninth-fastest defensive lineman at the (Northwestern) camp. People started to look at him differently.”

Glenn’s eye-opening performance landed him an invitation to Valparaiso for a prospect camp, and, before he even left the field, coaches told him he had an offer ... his first.

“I was overjoyed; I had no idea how to take it,” Glenn said.

On Thursday, Glenn gathered with friends, family and coaches at Alden-Hebron to celebrate his commitment to the Division I Crusaders and coach Dave Cecchini. He made his official decision two weeks ago, and also had strong interest in attending D-III Wisconsin-Platteville.

Glenn, ranked in the top two of his class at A-H, plans to major in mechanical engineering.

Glenn is the 19th player under Lalor to play in college, and the first to go D-I. The last athlete from A-H to go D-I was left-handed pitcher Mark Winkelman, who went to Creighton in 2009.

The last football player to go D-I was Bill Whinery (Colorado) in 1974, Lalor said.

Valparaiso finished 4-7 overall and 3-5 in the Pioneer Football League last year, and is 9-24 over the past three seasons under Cecchini as part of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

“It’s been my dream ever since I was a kid,” said Glenn, a Northwest Herald All-Area second-team selection at tight end.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing D-I football, and I mean, I worked my [butt] off and didn’t think it would actually happen. When my dream finally came knocking on my front door, it was amazing. It felt great.”

Glenn really started to dream big after the Giants were knocked out of the Class 1A football playoffs his junior year.

“After my junior season ended, I really got serious about playing college football,” Glenn said. “The next day (after the playoffs), I was in the weight room. I trained every day up until my senior year.”

Lalor noticed a change both physically and mentally in Glenn around that time.

“That kid plays at 110 percent all the time, and he’s going to have to at the next level,” Lalor said. “He’s going to find out at college, there’s a lot of bigger guys, too. But his motor is always going.”

In a Northeastern Athletic Conference loss to Hiawatha this season, an opposing player stepped on Glenn’s right hand, cracking and breaking it. He taped up the hand and played the rest of the game with the injury, finishing out the Giants’ season.

“The kid has a high tolerance for pain, let’s just put it that way,” Lalor said. “He broke his hand, and he’s like, ‘Coach, just tape it up. I’m going to play.’

He’s ready to take it to the next level.”

Glenn played just about anywhere and everywhere for the Giants last season. Valparaiso recruited him as a defensive lineman, Glenn’s favorite position. He also played middle linebacker for A-H because opposing offenses would just run the ball to the side of the line he wasn’t on.

On offense, the versatile Glenn played fullback, left tackle, right tackle and tight end. He even split out wide for Lalor from time to time, and he once threw a touchdown on a pitch-out.

Glenn said that, in addition to his physical attributes and football instincts, the coaches at Valparaiso liked his coachability and the ability to adapt and correct mistakes on the fly.

Glenn likes the 1-on-1 battles at de-

fensive end, and that it’s all about “outsmarting, outpowering and having a better technique than your opponent.”

“He’s quick to come off, he’s got the size to come off, and he’s fast enough to do it,” Lalor said of Glenn’s prospects as a defensive end. “I suspect he’ll get redshirted his first year, and they’ll get him in the weight room. Get him faster and let him try to grow into his body some more.”

Back at Alden-Hebron, Glenn said he was overcome with emotions during his ceremonial signing. He thanked his parents, Paul and Linda, for their support and help in the process.

“They’re both really proud of me,” Glenn said. “They know this has been a dream of mine. It kind of got emotional there. Seeing my parents, it looked like my mom was about to tear up.

“To do it in front of all the people that have supported me this whole time, it was awesome.”

Lalor said Glenn’s story should motivate other athletes from the community to dream big, too. Glenn’s photo and a copy of his letter of intent soon will be put up in a display case at the main lobby of the school, along with some of the other athletes who went on to play in college.

“It just proves to kids that even someone from little Hebron, depending on the amount of hard work that you put in and if you’re really dedicated, can play at a higher level,” Lalor said. “His family should be proud, and the community should be proud of him for getting it done, too.”

Old partners, pals reunite as pairing with Oduya’s arrival

But there’s a lot to like about the reunion. For one thing, if Oduya and Hjalmarsson draw the toughest defensive assignments, as coach Joel Quenneville has suggested, that should give Keith more favorable matchups, particularly during home games. For another, Seabrook is a right-handed shot, which makes breakouts and D-to-D passes easier.

Hjalmarsson, a left-handed shot, prefers playing his off side for defensive reasons, but it can be limiting offensively.

The arrival of Oduya should ease the burden on Keith, too. Keith is averaging 25 minutes, 53 seconds of ice time a game, sixth in the league – the most he’s averaged since the 2011-12 season, when he shared the league Duncan Keith lead with now-teammate Brian Campbell at 26:53. It’s only an extra shift or two a game compared with what he had been playing the past four seasons, and Keith said he hadn’t noticed the difference.

“I think that maybe gets overblown a little bit,” he said.

But every little bit counts while trying to preserve your top players for the playoffs.

“Duncs likes playing [big] minutes, but you’d like to have them a little bit lower,” Quenneville said.

“It could be a little bit lower number if you have three pairs and you’re comfortable with everybody against anybody. That could get him down some.”

In the meantime, Keith and Seabrook are working out the kinks and trying to remember each other’s style. For Keith, that means often ceding the first quick pass out of the zone to the stretch-pass-specialist Seabrook, and perhaps playing a little more conservatively without the defensive-minded Hjalmarsson by his side. For Seabrook, it means sometimes joining the rush a little sooner, and being ready for a pass that could come from any angle at any time.

“I thought it would take a little more time, but it’s already feeling comfortable again,” Seabrook said.

“It’s feeling back to normal, back to the way we used to play. It’s been fun.”

EVANSTON – With a regular-season Big Ten championship already locked up, Purdue wanted to send a few more positive notes to the NCAA Selection Committee.

Vincent Edwards scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half, and Caleb Swanigan added 20 points and 14 rebounds to help No. 16 Purdue beat Northwestern, 69-65, Sunday.

Purdue (25-6, 14-4 Big Ten) clinched the outright regular-season conference title earlier in the week, but had to hold on in the final seconds to fend off Northwestern (21-10, 10-8) in front of a raucous sellout crowd.

Bryant McIntosh had 25 points and six assists for Northwestern. The Wildcats have lost six of nine.

“A lot of people wanted to downplay that we didn’t have a lot to play for. But anytime you get a chance to play an NCAA tournament team on the road and get that kind of victory it is going to help your NCAA résumé,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said.

No. 21 Wichita St. tops ISU in championship

The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – No. 21 Wichita State left no doubt as to whom the top team in the Missouri Valley Conference was.

Conner Frankamp scored a career-high 19 points and Markis McDuffie added 16 as the Shockers beat Illinois State, 71-51, in the MVC tournament championship game Sunday, earning an automatic NCAA tournament berth.

“I thought we played very well against a very good team,” Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall said. “I thought it was a very thorough performance. We defended well. We made our free throws. We got the ball inside. We rebounded well. We shot it well. So that results in a 20-point win, and that’s

hard to do against that team.”

The teams had split their regular-season series and shared the conference championship, with Illinois State earning the top seed over Wichita State based on RPI. The Shockers (30-4) have won 15 straight games since losing at Illinois State on Jan. 14. The Redbirds (27-6) had won eight straight games since losing at Wichita State on Feb. 4.

“Our loss at Illinois State really woke us up,” said Frankamp, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding player after scoring 37 points in the final two games. “We got right back to work after that and changed a few things, and it’s really helped us.

We’ll continue to work, and, hopefully, make a run in the tournament.”

Brent Seabrook figured he had a second or two. Wheeling around the offensive zone midway through the second period Saturday night in Nashville, Seabrook was a step or two behind the blue line when Jordin Tootoo flung a pass across the ice to Duncan Keith at the point. Seabrook thought an ensuing pass could be headed his way, but he wasn’t quite expecting Keith to one-time Tootoo’s relay.

Brent “I wasn’t expecting Seabrook that pass so quick,” Seabrook said. “With Duncs, you’ve got to be ready at all times.”

Seabrook lunged ahead and got the puck, and his shot turned into a Tootoo goal in the Blackhawks’ 5-3 victory. In only their third full game back together, the old partners and pals are starting to relearn each other’s games. The pair was a mainstay on the Hawks’ blue line for years before they were broken up in the spring of 2015, with Niklas Hjalmarsson moving up to the top pairing.

But with the looming return of Johnny Oduya, Keith and Seabrook are back together. And they couldn’t be happier about it.

“I don’t think it’s a secret that I enjoy playing with Seabs,” Keith said. “He’s my best friend, my closest friend. It’s fun to be out there on the ice with him.”

Despite their long history together, the transition hasn’t been perfectly smooth. As well as the duo played offensively Saturday – Seabrook had two assists, Keith chipped in another – they also were on the ice for all three goals against. But both said, after a few games, that it’s starting to feel like old times again.

“I’d like to think you’re able to slip back into it fairly seamlessly, but there is a little bit of an adjustment,” Keith said. “We haven’t played together very often, other than maybe late in the game, when we’re pressing

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Reynaldo Lopez had a much better outing his second time out, and Tyler Saladino homered in the White Sox’s 4-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Lopez was clipped for five runs in 11/3 innings against the Reds in his first start. On Sunday, Lopez pitched three innings and held the Diamondbacks to a run on three hits and a walk while striking out three, including four-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt twice.

Reynaldo “It was a good sign Lopez for me because he is one of the best in the league,” Lopez, 23, said through a translator. “When I faced him, I thought this was a moment I could challenge myself and see if I’m able to be in the majors. And I did.”

Lopez, one of the prospects acquired in the Adam Eaton trade with the Nationals, made six starts last season for the Nats, pitching to a 4.91 ERA. Sox personnel had Lopez at 100 mph on their radar gun. Guns vary, however, and MLB Gameday and scouts had him topping at 96. In any event, Lopez looked good.

“I made a good step,” Lopez said. “I had better focus today than I did last time, and I was able to keep my pitches low in the zone.”

The Sox are 6-3-1 in Cactus League games.

ONE CRACK OF THE BAT In an otherwise quiet day for Sox batters, Saladino homered to deep left center against Tom Wilhelmsen, and Nicky Delmonico continued to make hard contact with a triple off the center-field wall. Delmonico has four extra-base hits this spring and is batting .316.

PUT ME IN, COACH Peter Bourjos and Jacob May played center field, a wide-open position in camp. Manager Rick Renteria said Leury Garcia and Adam Engel, who played left, also are in the mix.

Charlie Tilson was thought to have the inside edge, but a foot injury has kept him out of action.

“He started jogging [Saturday],” Renteria said. “Felt pretty good. The intensity – it’s not high intensity yet, but he’s feeling good about the jog. We’re going to continue to just monitor it and see where it goes. He’s still been hitting and doing a lot of baseball activity.”

Capra in training mode, too Coach promises aggressive style from 3rd-base box

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – It’s spring training for the third base coach, too.

It especially is true for Nick Capra, who hasn’t been on the field since 2005 and takes over for an in-the-trenches White Sox squad this season. Capra needs these games to get ready for the season, arguably more than any other third base coach in Arizona and Florida.

“No doubt. It’s been a while since I’ve been out there,” Capra said. “There are a lot of things I have to relearn and program my mind to do. The process shouldn’t be a tough transition, but there are a lot of things to think through before I get in that box.”

Playing it safe won’t be Capra’s style. He promises to challenge opposing outfielders with an aggressive style of waving guys home.

“They understand we’re going to be aggressive,” Capra said.

Capra, who turns 59 this week, spent parts of five of his 17 years in the majors with the Royals and Rangers. He has 22 years with the Sox, including 10

as a minor league manager, a job that usually doubles as third base coach.

When Rick Renteria was hired as manager, third base coach Joe McEwing became his bench coach, and Capra, the Sox’s director of player development the past five years, came on board in uniform.

Having experience in that box near the hot corner is a plus, but Capra is the first to tell you it’s different with major leaguers.

“Absolutely,” he said. “The game is quicker, and major league players are a little more polished.”

Nick Capra It also is the hotter corner for split-second decisions, where a right or wrong wave or hold can be the difference in a run or big out. And Capra will get some runners thrown out because of his is aggressive style.

“That’s the way I’ve done things my whole career,” Capra said. “Be aggressive and make good decisions. I have to train [players] to make good decisions, and I have to train myself to make good decisions.”

And he has to be ready for the blowback when a runner is waved home and thrown out in a key situation. Capra knows it comes with the territory.

“You need thick skin,” he said.

“It’s going to happen; hopefully, it doesn’t happen a lot. That’s the nature

of the beast. I’ll have to deal with a lot of second-guessing on what I do. But I’m going to be aggressive and help us win ballgames, not lose them.”

To keep criticism to a minimum, Capra has begun studying players’ assets and weaknesses. He’s watching outfielders’ arms, infielders’ cutoff and relay quirks, all that stuff.

With a background in player development, Capra’s move to Renteria’s staff made sense as the Sox rebuild, general manager Rick Hahn said, and he also is watching the Sox as a baserunners coach and helping McEwing work with infielders.

Meanwhile, McEwing transitions into his role as bench coach next to Renteria, a guy he seemed attached to at the hip last season.

“His experience as a (minor league) manager and as a player gives him a lot of good insight,” Renteria said.

Renteria and the coaches have conversations that cross all lines of the game, not just exclusive to the coaches’ area of expertise. McEwing and Capra have been hitting instructors.

Hitting coach Todd Steverson has managed in the minors, so he knows the challenges of coaching third that Capra is relearning.

“We’ve all played this game; we know how difficult this game is,” Steverson said. “We all give feedback to each other. It’s a good thing all the way around.”

Quintana, pitchers off to WBC this week

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Jose Quintana is leaving the White Sox on Monday. Not for another major league team, but for the World Baseball Classic to pitch for Colombia.

For Quintana and his wife, who are from Colombia, and their families, this is a pretty big deal.

“They’re excited for this tournament,” the Sox pitcher said. “They ask me every day how I feel. ‘How was your day?’ We have a lot of friends going to Miami and watch the games. It will be a good time.”

Quintana, who has assumed the role of the Sox’s staff ace now that Chris Sale is gone, has worked ahead of schedule to be ready to face Team USA on Friday. How he feels is super important to the Sox, who are trusting he doesn’t get overworked or push too hard this early. A 65-pitch limit in accordance with WBC first-round rules

comes as some comfort to Sox management, which views Quintana as their staff ace and most valuable trade chip.

“The WBC has a lot of energy,” said Sox manager Rick Renteria, who managed Team Mexico in 2013, a team that was involved in a brawl with Canada. “When they’re in there competing, they’re intent on having success.”

As will starting pitcher Miguel Gonzalez, who is from GuadaJose Quintana lajara and will pitch for Mexico about an hour away at Estadio de Beisbol Charros de Jalisco.

Gonzalez expects a friends-and-family cheering section of more than 100 to watch him pitch, most likely in Mexico’s second game, he said.

“On my dad’s side of the family there’s 16 brothers and sisters, and my mom’s side, there’s seven,” Gonzalez said. “There’s definitely going to be cous-

ins, friends and family there for sure.”

Gonzalez and Quintana pitched simulated games Friday. David Robertson and Nate Jones, who are pitching for the U.S. team, each worked a scoreless inning in the Sox’s game against the Angels on Saturday.

Kopech scratched: Prospect Michael Kopech, who gave up a home run and allowed four runs in his spring debut Tuesday, was slated to pitch in relief Sunday, but instead will throw in a simulated game Tuesday along with veteran Derek Holland.

Kopech, who touched 101 mph in his outing, wasn’t sharp with command and will focus on specifics with pitching coach Don Cooper.

“We have to get him stretched out in a controlled setting and get him specific work, like say, ‘Let’s work on fastball arm side or changeups this inning,’ ” Cooper said.

Renteria said he expected Kopech to get another start this spring.

OUCH! Third baseman Jeimer Candelario, one of the more impressive prospects in camp, left the game after getting struck by a pitch on the left ankle. The team said he suffered only a bruise.

when Contreras was a rookie.

But Lester said he already feels a comfort level with Contreras, and he thinks Contreras’ exceptional arm will make up for any catching up he has to do on what had been a Ross-Lester-Anthony Rizzo triangle of tricks for handling the running game.

“I forgot how good of an arm he has until that first throw down to second base (after first-inning warmups),” Lester said. “I’ve got to remember to get the [heck] out of the way.

“We’ll figure it out,” he added of the building relationship with the catcher who is expected to be the starter for the final four years of Lester’s contract.

“It’s just a matter of throwing innings and pitches and all that stuff. I’m not concerned with it at all.

“Willie’s such a good kid and cares, and he wants to learn and get better. I don’t see any reason why this is ever going to be an issue for anybody.”

If he’s right, and the 33-yearold left arm holds up to recent form, he might even have a shot at adding another Cy to the family.

New coaching-box emphasis to be an adjustment for Jones

MESA, Ariz. – Gary Jones picked his spot for self-preservation reasons as much as anything, stationing himself farther into foul territory and a little toward the on-deck circle from his third-base coaching box.

“I wasn’t trying to gain an advantage,” he said.

“The only reason I did it was to try to protect myself as far as getting hit by a batted ball from a right-handed hitter.”

Gary Jones Now an amendment to major league rules emphasizes the coaching-box restriction, mandating coaches stay roughly in the boxes before the ball is put in play. How vigorously umpires enforce it – or how severe the penalty might be – remains to be determined.

An apparent goal is to keep a base coach from stealing catching signs, al-

though Jones said it’s hard to be sure of that because MLB officials never talked to him or, apparently, other coaches.

“The only thing that disappointed me is if I was one of the guys that it was changed for, they didn’t ask me why I stood down there,” he said. “I don’t know if they assumed that I was trying to take advantage or something like that, which I wasn’t. My whole purpose was for safety reasons.”

That issue was spotlighted 10 years ago when Mike Coolbaugh, a first base coach in the Rockies’ system, was killed after being hit by a line drive in a minor league game.

“Obviously, I’m working on it now in spring training because it’s kind of a different angle for me not being able to get down as far as I would like sometimes,” Jones said.

“It’s going to be an adjustment. The biggest adjustment is just going to be once the ball is hit, scrambling to get down the line where I normally would get to create that angle that I like to have.”

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No, that’s not a typo on Jon Lester’s bio sheet.

He and his wife named their newborn daughter Cy in November. Well, technically Cy Elizabeth.

But, yeah, Cy. Like that Cy. “That’s more of a coincidence than anything,” the Cubs’ star left-hander said.

“It’s not after Cy Young. It’s just a name we really liked.”

Lester couldn’t explain the origin of the affinity he and his wife developed for the name.

But if you’ve watched him pitch the past several years – especially last season for the Cubs – it’s not hard to imagine how familiar and appealing the word might be considering how often it has been mentioned near his own name.

on this staff in this organization,” said Lester, who reiterated that pitching in an opener stinks because starters go in cold with no trends, rhythms or recent scouting.

He’s 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA in five openers, and his teams are 1-4 in those games.

“It’s just a weird game,” said Lester, who said Game 1 playoff starts are easier because of all the known quantities that have built up. “That first one is just always a little bit different. But at the same time, it’s fun. It’s a lot of different emotions going into it.”

The bigger potential issue is he’ll open without the safety blanket of his personal catcher for the past four seasons, David Ross of “Dancing With the Stars” fame.

Ross became an expert at keeping runners and bunters in check for Lester, who has had problems throwing to bases, dating to his amateur days.

Against the Rangers, he and young catcher Willson Contreras worked together for nine batters – half their total together all of last season,

HAMPTON, Ga. – Kevin Harvick was faster than everyone at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Harvick ruined a dominating performance by speeding on his final pit stop, allowing Brad Keselowski to steal a NASCAR Monster Energy Cup victory Sunday.

“I’m just snake-bit here,” Harvick said. “But it’s my own doing.”

Harvick won the first two stages under NASCAR’s new race format and led a staggering 293 out of 325 laps overall.

But, after a late yellow came out when Austin Dillon lost power, the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford eclipsed the 45-mph speed limit going into the pits.

“I thought I was being conservative,” Harvick said. “I guess I wasn’t.

I was just pushing it too hard.”

The ensuing drive-thru penalty pushed Kyle Larson to the lead, but he couldn’t hold off Keselowski, who surged ahead on the backstretch with six laps to go and cruised to a 0.564-second victory.

Keselowski, who had his own misfortune at Atlanta in 2013 that cost him a shot at making the Chase, wasn’t about to turn down Harvick’s gift.

“We’ve had races where we led a bunch of laps and things just fall apart at the end,” Keselowski said. “That’s just how this sport works. You take advantage of the opportunities when they come. We certainly caught an opportunity.”
