Kraft Heinz withdraws $143B bid to buy Unilever The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Ketchup maker and packaged food giant Kraft Heinz has withdrawn a $143 billion offer to buy Unilever, backing away after the mayonnaise, tea and seasonings maker rejected the bid as too low.

The companies announced the decision Sunday in a joint news release, saying that Kraft Heinz has “amicably” abandoned the offer.

The deal would have combined Kraft Heinz brands such as Oscar Mayer, Jell-O and Velveeta with Unilever’s Hellman’s, Lipton and Knorr.

The merged company would have rivaled Nestle as the world’s biggest packaged food maker by sales.

Analysts said Kraft Heinz, co-headquartered in Chicago and Pittsburgh, is still in the market for acquisitions. The fact that it bid for all of Unilever and not just its food business indicates that Kraft Heinz is potentially open to acquiring other packaged consumer goods, one analyst said.

also has a stable of personal care brands such as Dove soap. Unilever rejected the offer on Friday, but despite that, Kraft Heinz said at the time that it was still interested in the deal.

Such acquisitions might not lead to big changes that customers would notice on supermarket shelves, but shifting tastes are partly driving deal-making in the food industry.

Part of the challenge is the proliferation of smaller food makers marketing products that seem more wholesome, which makes it harder for the established companies to drive up sales simply by selling more of well-known products or by raising prices, as they have in the past.

“That obviously has its limits,” said David Garfield, head of the consumer products unit at consulting firm AlixPartners, said last week.

Instead, major packaged food companies are being forced to dig deeper to find cost efficiencies or tap into new markets, Garfield said. That can include mergers that result in consolidated manufacturing systems, or that give companies access to distribution networks in regions of the world where they don’t have a big presence.

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – President Donald Trump has made it clear he opposed abortion by reinstating the Mexico City policy, barring international nongovernmental organizations that perform or promote abortions from receiving U.S. government funding, and by frequently saying he would defund Planned Parenthood.

Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence also has maintained a long anti-abortion position and attended the 2017 March for Life in

Washington, D.C. As a result, McHenry County churches, pregnancy centers and anti-abortion groups are optimistic of the movement’s future under this new administration.

“We’re hopeful that ultimately there will be a change with this new administration,” said Judy Cocks, director of First Way Life Center in Johnsburg, which provides emotional and financial support for pregnant women and girls in crisis.

“There’s a lot of enthusiasm that our prolife legislatures will send the movement in the right direction,” said Linda Pieper, president

of Right to Life McHenry County.

March for Life started 44 years ago, after the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade that made abortion legal. It has since grown in attendees and takes place nationwide. One of the thousands of attendees to march this year was Allyson Svigelj, public relations and promotions coordinator at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Crystal Lake.

Svigelj went with two adults and 14 youths from St. Thomas to attend the Washington march Jan. 27. It was her sixth time marching.

McHenry County Sheriff’s Office receives grant for AEDs, training Crisis intervention training aimed at dealing with people with mental illness

jreiland@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office received a $17,500 grant from the McHenry County Community Foundation for equipment and training, the office announced Thursday.

The sheriff’s office plans to buy Automatic External Defibrillators so every deputy can have one in their squad car.

The grant also will help pay for deputies to attend Crisis Intervention Training, according to a news release.

The 40-hour statewide training program is designed to educate police officers on how to interact with people living with mental illness. The specialized training teaches law enforcement officers how to recognize and interact with those who have a mental illness in order to maximize safety for everyone

involved during a potentially high risk situation.

“My most sincere thanks to the McHenry County Community Foundation for their assistance in these two critical tasks,” Sheriff Bill Prim said in a news release. “It would be difficult to identify areas where financial assistance would as easily and directly translate into improvement of the health and welfare of our county.”

• The $1,5000 Future Educator Scholarship, for current seniors attending McHenry County public high schools, recognizes scholastic ability, community contributions and commitment leading to a degree in education. Applications are available at www.mcrta.org. The application deadline is March 15.

• The Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation Scholarship will be awarded to college sophomores or juniors who are residents of Illinois or graduates of an Illinois high school. Applications are available at www.irtaonline.org. The application deadline is March 7.

County website to make ordinance lookup easier

kcraver@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Trying to find a particular ordinance on the McHenry County government website can be like trying to navigate a maze.

The main page has no link to ordinances. While the county health ordinance and the Unified Development Ordinance can easily be found on the health and planning departments’ respective pages, finding most others requires navigating a number of links and requiring knowledge of the ordinance numbers or the dates in which they were passed.

A County Board member, its chairman and the state’s attorney announced that the problem is going to be fixed by spring.

The problem was brought to Franks’ attention by board member Mary McCann, R-Woodstock, who has raised the concern in the past.

“After Mary McCann informed me that most county ordinances, which local taxpayers are required to follow, are extremely challenging to find online, I was stunned,” Franks said.

“Sadly, she is 100-percent right, and we need to fix this as quickly as possi-

ble,” Franks said.

The online code book is expected to be up by May 1.

Kenneally, who is the county’s highest law-enforcement official, called access to the letter of the laws and ordinances people must follow “a basic principle of liberty and self-governance.”

“Putting county ordinances up online in a well-organized, convenient setting will make participating in county democracy a simpler process for our constituents and make our government more accountable to them,” Kenneally said.

McCann called the lack of easy access to online county ordinances “deeply concerning,” but said that she was heartened to see Franks and Kenneally now making it a top priority.

Both the new chairman and the new state’s attorney took office in December.

SHAW MEDIA FOX LAKE – The Village of Fox Lake is inviting the community to “Take the Plunge” into the frigid waters of Nippersink Lake to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois starting at 1 p.m. Sunday from the shores at Lakefront Park.

In its 10th year, Fox Lake village officials said they are thrilled to be a part of the Polar Plunge challenge where thousands of jumpers at 21 locations across Illinois take a flying leap into frigid waters to support the cause.

Organizers said Miss Illinois Jaryn Franklin will be a judge at the plunge.

Franklin’s platform is “advocating for individuals with disabilities.”

Participants are required to raise a minimum of $100 in donations from family, friends, and co-workers to take a dip. The money collected will benefit the Special Olympics Illinois Athletes from Lake and McHenry counties.

Additional incentive prizes will be rewarded to participants who collect $250, $500 and $1,000 in donations.

Anyone may participate, but people younger than 18 must have a waiver signed by their parent or guardian.

District 12 hosting pre-K, kindergarten Orientation Night NORTHWEST HERALD RINGWOOD – Johnsburg School District 12’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten enrollment process will start with an Orientation Night on March 21.

The Orientation Night will take place at 6 p.m. at the Ringwood School Primary Center, 4700 School Road, Ringwood. “Playgrounds are very expensive, so we’re very, very appreciative,” Director of Parks and Recreation Laura Barron said.

“We’re very excited to get started,” Barron said. “We hope to have the projects done in June.”

Business expo coming up at Wauconda High School SHAW MEDIA WAUCONDA – The Wauconda Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Business & Community Expo on Saturday.

Although the federal government does not generally pay for abortions, the government is the largest source of funds for Planned Parenthood, according to NPR. Svigelj said she believed Planned Parenthood’s other services are overemphasized.

“Our tax dollars could be better served going to the 13,000-plus women centers throughout the country that do things Planned Parenthood doesn’t do,” Svigelj said.

“So I support the administration if they defund Planned Parenthood and was proud to see Pence and (Trump adviser Kellyanne) Conway support the movement and be so vocal at the march,” Svigelj said.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, in 2015, there were 361 reported abortions performed on McHenry County residents. However, Svigelj said the anti-abortion movement is not just about unborn babies.

“The pro-life movement is about life,” Svigelj said. “We want to support life from beginning to end. Everything that we can do support people, love our neighbors and show the love of Christ to every aspect of people’s lives.”

Kendzior attended both the marches in D.C. and Chicago this year. This was Kendzior’s first time going to the D.C. march and the second year she’s gone to the one in Chicago.

“The Chicago march is nice because it’s nice knowing you’re making a difference at a local level,” Kendzior

said. “And I think one of the best ways to talk about Roe v. Wade is at a local and state level, because that’s where change really can happen here is at the state level.”

Kendzior said the D.C. march typically takes place on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, but this year it was moved because of Trump’s inauguration.

“Both marches have a lot of joy in them, but they’re also very somber

because you’re walking to remember the millions of lives that have been lost since that court decision was made,” Kendzior said.

Kendzior said being anti-abortion isn’t a political issue to her, but a moral issue.

“For me, it doesn’t matter who the administration is,” Kendzior said.

“This is something you should walk in anyway because life matters so much.”

The March for Life in D.C. came a week after the Women’s March took place, where hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets to get their voices heard.

Meanwhile, Mary Ewert, vice president of McHenry County Citizens for Choice, said while many are concerned over the direction of the Trump administration, the reaction is resulting in explosive growth for the nonprofit, pro-abortion rights organization, as women are fearful the government will prioritize religious belief over women’s health care.

MADISON, Wis. – Clyde Stubblefield, a drummer for James Brown who created one of the most widely sampled drum breaks ever, died Saturday. He was 73.

His wife, Jody Hannon, told The Associated Press that Stubblefield died of kidney failure at a Madison, Wisconsin, hospital around noon. He had been suffering from kidney disease for 10 years, and had been hospitalized for a few days, she said.

Stubblefield performed on several of Brown’s classics in the 1960s and early 70s, including “Cold Sweat,” “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud,” “I’ve Got the Feelin’,” and the album “Sex Machine.”

But he was best known for a short solo on Brown’s 1970 single, “Funky Drummer.” Rolling Stone magazine said it was sampled on more than 1,000 songs and served as the backbeat for countless hip-hop tracks, including Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power,” Dr. Dre’s “Let Me Ride,” LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” and RunD.M.C.’s “Run’s House.” It even turned up on Ed Sheeran’s “Shirtsleeves” and George Michael’s “Freedom ’90,” the magazine said.

Hannon said Stubblefield saw “very little” in royalties and never expected them.

But Stubblefield was held in high esteem by his fellow musicians. When Prince got wind in 2000 that Stubblefield was deep in debt from a fight against bladder cancer, he personally paid $90,000 to cover his bills, she said.

16 Algonquin’s circus history The circus circuit had connections to Algonquin.

They were called “freaks” or “geeks.” But one thing is undeniable: They were remarkable.

In a day and age when being different meant being unemployed, many of society’s afflicted and dispossessed turned to sideshows – a “Congress of Human Oddities” (ironic word choice) – to make a living. Two of those performers lived in Algonquin.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced last month that it would be folding its tent after 146 years.

Feld Entertainment Inc., which bought the circus in 1967, announced that Ringling’s two circus units will perform their final shows May 7 in Providence, R.I. and May 22 in Uniondale, N.Y. “The decision to end the circus tours was made as a result of high costs coupled with a decline in ticket sales, making the circus an unsustainable business for the company,” the company stated in a press release. “Following the transition of the elephants off the circus, the company saw a decline in ticket sales greater than could have been anticipated.”

The inspiration behind the self-proclaimed “Greatest Show on Earth” was Phineas Taylor Barnum. P.T. Barnum’s penchant for promoting paid off handsomely after a number of schemes that included public showings of a 161-year-old man, a monkey-fish hybrid and the 2-foot5-inch General Tom Thumb.

But circus sideshows had another very important function: entertaining audiences and generating cash between performances under the big top.

They were divided into two types. Working acts such as sword swallowers, fire eaters, magicians and daredevil stunts that included knife throwing and being shot out of a cannon. The rest were marketed as “human oddities” and ranged from tattooed and bearded ladies, to those suffering from a physical deformity or abnormality. The spectrum included midgets and giants.

Among the latter was Arthur Caley, billed as “Col. Routh Goshen,” “Col. Ruth Goshen,” “Colonel Gosham,” “The Middlebush Giant” and

LOCAL HISTORY Kurt Begalka either the “Palestine,” “Manx” or “Arabian” giant. In fact, Goshen was born around 1820 in Sulby, on the Isle of Man. Newspaper accounts have him touring the U.S. from 1878-80.

Algonquin historian Don Purn discovered that Goshen, the youngest of 12 children, paid $2,200 in 1868 for three lots along River Road and four lots along Algonquin Road. In 1871, the Weekly Wisconsin reported on the Algonquin resident’s visit to the Scientific American Magazine office where he purportedly was described as a native of Turkey, born in the hills of Palestine to a family with 14 other children and had parents who each weighed 500 pounds. As for the rank of colonel? That supposedly came courtesy of the Austrian Army … if you believe that kind of thing.

Upon his death on Feb. 12, 1889, newspaper accounts listed Goshen as 7 foot, 6 inches tall and weighing 630 pounds.

He left behind an estate said to be $10,000 – despite being married three times and divorced twice. His betrothed included a German snake charmer and Mary Welch of Elgin, cousin to circus fat lady Phebe J. Dunn.

As a teenager, Welch became enamored with Goshen and visited him often while he was performing across Illinois.

As for Dunn, her career started off innocently enough.

An 1862 edition of the Woodstock Sentinel reported that she taught at McManaman School near Three Oaks and S. Rawson Bridge roads. She also taught students at Wienke District 55, a one-room schoolhouse located at Haeger’s Bend and Chapel Hill roads.

The 1935 “History of Algonquin” notes that Dunn “had a special bench constructed for her accommodation since she was too heavy to occupy an ordinary chair – even if she could get into it.”

The author notes that for years after her death, Wienke students placed flowers on that bench in her memory.

Dunn’s father, George, once owned 120 acres of farmland in Algonquin Township. Phebe, one of six children, later

In 1864 she toured with Goshen as part of Barnum’s Museum and Woods’ Museum. Goshen often donned a military costume with a white feather in his hat. Dunn was frequently pictured with a large snake coiled around her.

Dunn reportedly tipped the scales at 437 pounds by the age of 16. She died in 1869 at age 25 in Crystal Lake and is buried in Dundee Township West Cemetery, West Dundee.

You can wrangle over Ringling’s use of animal acts,

if you wish. That is not my intent here. What I do know is that another culturally significant piece of our past – like transcontinental commuter rail service, the golden age of movie palaces and auto camping – has been left by the roadside.

People can argue all they want over whether the world is better place for these changes, but there is one indomitable fact: We’re a different place. And that is worth at least a drum roll … a moment of wistful reflection.

When a surprise freezing rain event made travel in the metro-east a nightmare during rush hour Dec. 16, Tyler, the interim commander of Illinois State Police District 11, made sure he was out on the roads supporting his troopers and assisting motorists. Even though he could have easily pulled rank and stayed at district headquarters, Tyler never made that an option.

“My first job is to be a trooper and to serve my community members,” Tyler said. “The rank doesn’t matter. Serving others is the most important. Whether I’m making a decision about major operations or whether I’m out changing a tire, it’s going to get the same energy. I was going to be out there as long as my guys were out there.”

On Jan. 16, the interim tag was removed from Tyler’s title. The 45-year-old was promoted to captain, his latest promotion in an 18-year career with Illinois

GOP rips Illinois comptroller for buying used $32K SUV

CHICAGO – Illinois Republicans criticized Democratic Comptroller Susana Mendoza on Sunday for spending $32,000 on a used SUV when the state is months behind in paying its bills, an attack her office dismissed as an attempt to distract from GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “failure.”

The comptroller’s office, which controls the state checkbook, bought the 2016 Ford Explorer from a central Illinois dealership and paid for it in full in January, shortly after Mendoza took office, the Chicago Sun-Times first reported.

Illinois GOP Chairman Tim Schneider on Sunday called the purchase “outrageous,” noting Illinois has $11 billion in overdue bills because of the state budget stalemate.

That has led to social service agencies and other vendors going unpaid or waiting months to get money that’s owed them.

“I don’t think buying a 2016 SUV for the comptroller’s office is a priority,” Schneider said. “I think that can wait.”

Tyler caught the law enforcement bug at an early age while growing up in tiny Hazelhurst, Mississippi, a town of 4,000 in the southern part of the state. A state trooper befriended a 15-year-old Tyler, who went on ride-alongs and learned what it took to be an officer.

“I knew right then and there that I wanted to be that man,” Tyler said.

Mendoza’s office said the money came from an administrative fund that’s not used to pay state bills and isn’t related to the bill backlog.

Director of Communication Abdon Pallasch said Mendoza has reduced the office fleet from nine to eight vehicles and the SUV replaced a car that was inoperable. He said Rauner has a larger state vehicle fleet, and noted state agencies controlled by Rauner have spent $11 million on vehicles over the past two years, not including leases.

“The governor’s party’s phony outrage at one purchase of a used car instead of the state’s $11 billion dollar backlog of bills he refuses to address is a transparent attempt to silence the state office-holder who has been most vocal in holding the governor accountable for his failure to do his job,” Pallasch said.

Mendoza, who defeated former GOP Comptroller Leslie Munger in November, has repeatedly blasted Rauner as responsible for Illinois’ nearly two-year budget fight.

That has made her a frequent target of the Rauner-funded state GOP, which has linked the former Chicago city clerk to Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Illinois are monitoring the use of a synthetic opioid they say was recently introduced in the area and poses a major threat of overdose.

Williamson County officials said U-47700 is eight times stronger than heroin and can be purchased online from Chinese manufacturers at a low cost.

The Southern Illinoisan reported that the drug, also referred to as “U,” “U-4,” “Pink,” or “Pinky,” was introduced throughout Illinois last year. It has claimed the lives of about 100 people in Illinois since then.

Williamson County Coroner Mike “Junior” Burke said he can confirm one case in which the synthetic substance was identified in toxicology reports.

“I’ve been fortunate that I’ve only had one,” Burke said. “And I know it’s coming. It just hasn’t hit here yet, at least in Williamson County.”

Williamson County State’s Attorney Brandon Zanotti said that case is under investigation.

The drug can be ingested, snorted and incorporated into heroin, which increases the chance of an overdose.

“What they do, cutting it into heroin, it lowers the cost for the dealers while also making it more potent, and I guess gives more of a euphoria for the person buying it,” Zanotti said. “The issue we have is heroin on

Illinois Ag Department to talk plan to fight gypsy moths

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Agriculture is holding a series of meetings to discuss plans to fight the leaf-eating gypsy moth in northern Illinois.

The moths are particularly destructive to oak trees, but will feast on more than 250 species of trees and shrubs. Large populations can strip plants bare, potentially leading to tree death.

Agriculture Department officials plan to apply naturally occurring bacteria across thousands of acres beginning in mid-May to prevent male moths from breeding. The bacteria will be applied via helicopter or airplane near LaSalle, Plano, Wilmington, Yorkville and Starved Rock State Park.

The state said it’s considered safe but people may want to stay indoors for 30 minutes after it’s applied.

The public is invited to learn more during open houses in Pontiac, Oglesby, Oswego and Freeport.

Draft DHS guidelines seek to aggressively detain immigrants

WASHINGTON – The Homeland Security Department has drafted sweeping new guidelines aimed at aggressively detaining and deporting immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, according to a pair of memoranda signed by DHS Secretary John Kelly.

The memos dated Friday seek to implement President Donald Trump’s broad directive to crack down on illegal immigration. Kelly outlines plans to hire thousands of additional enforcement agents, expand on the priority list for immigrants marked for immediate removal and enlist local law enforcement to help make arrests, according to a person briefed on the documents, who confirmed the details to The Associated Press.

“The surge of illegal immigration at the southern border has overwhelmed federal agencies and resources and has created a significant national security vulnerability to the United States,” Kelly wrote.

He said apprehensions on the southern U.S. border had seen an additional surge of 10,000 to 15,000 a month from 2015 to 2016.

The memos leave in place one directive from the Obama administration, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allows young people who were brought into the country illegally as children to stay and obtain work permits. The program has protected about 750,000 immigrants since its inception in 2012. Trump previously has indicated his desire to end the program, but at his press conference last week indicated that he would “show great heart” toward the program.

The memos were reported first by The Washington Post and other news organizations. A U.S. official familiar with the documents did

not dispute the accuracy of the memos signed

by Kelly, which originally were scheduled for release Friday before they were postponed for White House review.

A White House official said the White House has raised objections with the documents and is working with DHS to finalize the policy. The official was not authorized to discuss the process publicly and insisted on anonymity.

Under the draft guidelines, Kelly seeks to “expeditiously hire” 10,000 more enforcement agents and 5,000 Border Patrol officers.

Seeking to fulfill Trump’s campaign promise to build a wall along the Mexican border, Kelly also calls on Customs and Border Protection to “immediately begin planning, design, construction and maintenance of a wall, including the attendant lighting, technology (including sensors), as well as patrol and access roads.” He describes the wall as necessary to deter illegal immigration and calls it a “critical component” of Trump’s overall border security strategy.

He says the department also will prioritize for more immediate removal those who have been convicted of a crime; charged with a crime; committed fraud in connection with a matter before a government agency; abused any program related to public benefits; or have not complied with orders to leave the country.

Joanne Lin, senior legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, criticized the proposed guidelines as a Trump style of immigration enforcement in which “due process, human decency and common sense are treated as inconvenient obstacles on the path to mass deportation.”

“The Trump administration is intent on inflicting cruelty on millions of immigrant families across the country,” she said in a statement.

The Associated Press DACHAU, Germany – U.S. Vice President Mike Pence paid a somber visit to the site of the Dachau concentration camp Sunday, walking along the grounds where tens of thousands of people were killed during World War II. Pence was joined by his wife, Karen, and the couple’s 23-year-old daughter, Charlotte, as they toured the exhibits at the former concentration camp that was established by the Nazis in 1933 near Munich.

by Abba Naor, a survivor of the camp, and other dignitaries as he passed through the wrought-iron gate bearing the inscription, “Arbeit macht frei,” or “Work sets you free.” The Pences placed a wreath beneath the International Memorial at the center of the camp, toured the barracks and viewed the ovens inside the crematorium.

The Pences also stopped at religious memorials at the site and later attended a church service on the camp’s grounds.

The concentration camp for political prisoners and Jews near Dachau was the first such facility in Germany. In 1935, other groups, among them Jehovah’s Witnesses, gays and emigrants, were sent there. After a larger facility was built, more political prisoners and more than 11,000 German and Austrian Jews were sent there in 1938. In time, more than 200,000 people from across Europe were held at Dachau and subsidiary camps, and more than 40,000 died. The camp was liberated by U.S. forces in April 1945.

Making his first overseas trip as vice president, Pence spoke to foreign diplomats and defense officials at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday and met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders.

Shortly after his arrival in Brussels later Sunday, Pence said the American people appreciate the nation’s alliance with Belgium and he’s looking forward to his meetings with European Union and NATO leaders Monday.

Fed. should hike interest rates

Inflation in the U.S. rose in the year that ended in January by 2.5 percent – faster than expected, and well above the Fed’s target of 2 percent. It was the latest sign that the economy needs a rise in interest rates when the Federal Reserve’s policy-making committee meets next month.

Before the new inflation number, most analysts had thought the next rise would come later in the year. Afterward, it looked like a closer call, with trades in derivatives suggesting a probability of roughly 40 percent that the mid-March meeting would raise rates. That should make it easier for the Fed, which doesn’t like to surprise investors, to do the right thing.

The central bank has long said it will be patient about getting monetary policy back to normal, not wishing to stifle a recovery that’s been no better than tepid. But it also has said that its interest-rate decisions won’t be tied to a fixed schedule, but will depend on data as it arrives. The new figures tilt the balance in favor of further tightening, sooner rather than later. Granted, the signal from inflation is more ambiguous than you might think. The unadjusted index of consumer prices is distorted month to month by swings in volatile energy and food prices.

The Fed prefers to keep an eye on a different measure of inflation – the price index of personal consumption expenditures. This went up by 1.7 percent, excluding food and energy, in the year to December, still a little below the central bank’s inflation target.

In addition, the current low unemployment rate of 4.8 percent most likely exaggerates the tightness in the labor market. As the economy expands, some of the many workers who’d previously dropped out of the labor force altogether (and therefore don’t count as unemployed) have started looking for jobs.

This is why, despite rising employment, the jobless rate actually edged up in January. An expanding labor force gives the economy a bit of additional headroom.

Yet bear in mind the Fed’s current policy stance is anything but neutral. The short-term interest rate stands at 0.5 percent to 0.75 percent – low by historical standards – and the Fed’s balance sheet, swollen by large-scale bond-buying operations, continues to supply strong monetary stimulus. A quarter-point rise in rates next month would only make the Fed’s policy a little less expansionary.

A balance has to be struck. Moving too soon risks choking off some jobs that might otherwise be forthcoming. But waiting too long could leave the Fed no choice but to tighten policy abruptly amid fears of a surge in inflation – and that would be much worse for jobs.

There’ll be fresh data between now and the next Fed meeting, but as things stand, choosing not to nudge interest rates higher in March would be taking patience too far.

To the Editor: According to Russ Schert’s letter of Feb 10, since the Democrats are acting like kids, they should be

sent to bed with no dinner. How are they acting like kids? By doing almost, but not quite the same thing the GOP did to President [Barack] Obama, which was to deny him any cooperation.

According to Mitch McConnel, the senate majority leader, the GOP’s first priority was to prevent Obama from getting a second term. How did that work out for you, Mitchy boy? Nevermind that the country was in its worst financial straits in 80 years. The really important thing was to prevent a second term to the man who worked night and day to turn around an economy the previous administration (Bush 43) had sent into the crapper, metaphorically speaking. And Obama did it. All the while trying to get the GOP leadership to work with him toward that common goal. Would they do that?

Hell no! And Mr. Schert speaks of the lack of cooperation that Trump Is getting from the Dems.

So, Mr. Schert, you asked who took the ball and who took the bat from a recent session. The answer is the Grand Old Party. They did it nine years ago, and you’re just noticing? Now, that is sad.

Route 31 widening concerns

To the Editor: IDOT hosted an open house to get public comments on its plan to widen Route 31 all the way up to Route 120 and east to the 31 turn.

In addition, they plan to acquire the vacant land along the west side of Boone Creek south of 120, some of which we own, for water management and an access road.

McHenry does not seem aware of IDOT’s interest in this western section of the undeveloped Riverwalk. When I spoke to the city manager, he thought the project was just widening 120 at that point.

The Riverwalk will revitalize the downtown area, the property IDOT plans to acquire has C5, the highest zoning, and could accommodate a multifamily housing project.

Water management is not “highest and best “ use and defeats some of the efforts made

by Mayor Lowe, the Smith family and so many others to create a beautiful extensive Riverwalk for generations to come.

The issue with the ouster of Michael Flynn as national security adviser is not the mishandling of classified information, despite some of President Donald Trump’s tweets about it. It’s about Flynn’s detractors selectively disclosing to the public the communications of U.S. officials, and how this represents a chilling abuse of power.

The backdrop to this is all the open questions about how Russia influenced the last election, and whether Trump’s associates colluded in this operation. That is a necessary investigation. If Trump and his advisers had anything to do with that, it’s a high crime.

The good news is that the FBI, in conjunction with the intelligence community, is now probing the matter. So is the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. There is also renewed momentum for a more formal independent commission to examine all of this as well. That’s important.

But it’s worth asking what any of this has to do with Flynn. He failed to give all the details of some December phone calls with the Russian ambassador but at no point has been accused of working with Russia in its campaign to hack leading Democrats, distribute their emails on the internet or sabotage the election in less grotesque ways. While others in Trump’s orbit, including his former campaign manager Paul Manafort, are allegedly being investigated for this), The Washington Post has reported that Flynn is not now a target of an FBI probe.

So what law did Flynn violate? According to the New York Times, he may have violated the Logan Act, an antiquated statute that prohibits private citizens from negotiating with foreign adversaries. The Times reported that Obama administration advisers believed Flynn might have negotiated a deal with Russia just after Obama had imposed new sanctions and expelled Russian spies as punishment for Moscow’s interference in the election. On Thursday, The Post reported that Flynn may have misled FBI agents investigating the phone calls.

There are a few important points here. To start, there is no indication that Flynn made any quid pro quo with the Russians. The Times reports this, and I have confirmed it with my own sources. Second, the Logan Act, which dates to 1799, is likely unconstitutional. The Justice Department does not prosecute Americans violating it. And in this case, the private citizen was about to become the national security adviser. If it’s illegal for incoming U.S. officials to discuss policy with foreign adversaries, then the hard work of preparing the transition of a foreign policy agenda for an incoming administration will be outlawed. The FBI investigation is more serious, but so is disclosing the bureau’s ongoing investigations to the press.

It’s also been reported that Flynn had contacts with Russians during the election. That’s a bit more troubling but means very little in and of itself. It’s also not unprecedented. In 2008, an Obama foreign policy adviser, Daniel Kurtzer,

traveled to Damascus to offer the government there his views on the Syria-Israeli peace talks.

Many Democrats, including former Secretary of State John Kerry, met with Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations during George W. Bush’s final years as president at a moment when our military leaders accused Iran of killing U.S. soldiers in Iraq by providing militias with improvised explosive devices. If Bush’s FBI had launched Logan Act investigations in that period, would Democrats have cheered on the leaks of the investigations?

Flynn might have concealed his contacts with Russian nationals in the last year. He did attend a 2015 conference in Moscow put on by the Russian propaganda network RT, for which he was paid by his speaker’s bureau. Some reporters have raised the prospect that Flynn’s receipt of money that initially came from Russia violated the Pentagon’s guidelines for retired members of the military.

The weakest reed in all of this is the charge that Flynn would be susceptible to Russian blackmail because he did not tell Vice President Mike Pence the full story about his phone call.

According to The Post, then-acting Attorney General Sally Yates felt compelled to take this information to the White House at the end of January because she was so concerned that Flynn was compromised.

This sounds like concern-trolling to me. If Flynn forgot the brief discussion of sanctions in his phone call with the Russian ambassador, as he claimed in his resignation letter, it’s far-fetched to think the Russians could coerce him to betray his country to not expose the “lie.” This is why it’s so important to release the transcripts of these phone calls to the public, as former U.S. attorney Andy McCarthy argues in his National Review column.

Nonetheless, the damage is now done.

Republicans are saying that Flynn should be asked to testify before Congress. His security clearance has been suspended. He has retained a lawyer. Flynn will likely spend months and possibly years defending himself because he briefly talked to the Russian ambassador about sanctions a few weeks before he was about to become Trump’s national security adviser.

If that’s all there is to this, then the Democrats and the FBI should be ashamed of themselves. There is a far more important matter to investigate: the Russian influence operation against the U.S. election and whether Trump and any associates aided and abetted it. So far, no one has alleged that Flynn had anything to do with that. This hasn’t stopped his accusers though from trying and convicting him in the press. Flynn’s enemies waged this campaign by disclosing communications that we should be able to trust the government to monitor with proper discretion. Thanks to these leaks, that trust has eroded.

26 Patient care a priority regardless of gender Dear Doctor: Do hospitalized patients really get better care from female doctors compared to men, as a new study – and now many headlines – claim?

Dear Reader: My initial reaction when I saw this study was one of denial. As a man, I viewed the study – and the host of media articles reporting on it – with something like hostility; it seemed no less than an attack on my gender. After I calmed down a bit, I read through the research.

The study, published recently in JAMA Internal Medicine, looked at a random sample of data – totaling more than 1.5 million hospitalizations – from four years of hospitalizations among Medicare patients being cared for by general internists. The authors separated the patients into two groups based on the gender of their physicians, then evaluated quality of care by the death rates of these patients within a 30-day period after hospitalization and also by the rates of readmission to the hospital after being discharged.

The authors found the death rates of patients cared for by female internists were slightly lower than the death rates of patients cared for by male internists: 11.07 percent versus 11.49 percent. This was not a staggering difference – amounting to one fewer death in 233 patients – but still, it was a difference.

Further, readmission rates were lower for patients of female doctors compared to patients of male doctors: 15.02 percent versus 15.57. This means one fewer readmission in 182 patients.

Even as a man playing devil’s advocate, I can’t blame confounding factors – differences in patient characteristics – for the findings. Female doctors took care of more female patients, slightly fewer patients with heart disease, lung disease and diabetes, but slightly more patients with kidney disease.

But these were only minimal differences, and the authors took those differences into account, making adjustments for them in

Yet there were two differences between the female and male doctors that may be of substance: the physicians themselves. Female physicians in the study were on average 5 years younger than their male counterparts (42.8 years versus 47.8 years). Not to be ageist, but younger doctors may have a greater ability to use hospital computer systems, may be more likely to utilize social services for their patients, and may be more willing to alter their practices based on the latest studies.

Another important aspect is female physicians on average took care of fewer hospitalized patients than their male counterparts, with female internists taking care of an estimated 132 hospitalized patients a year versus male internists’ 181. The busier schedule of the male internists may increase the chances that some aspects of care will be negatively affected. The authors tried to correct for both the age and patient load issues, but that’s not easy to do.

As provocative as this new study is, it’s far from conclusive. A 2013 study in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine found no differences in care between male and female physicians in the rates of death, hospitalizations or health care expenditures.

In summation, this research does nonetheless offer a reminder to all physicians, regardless of gender or age, that many factors affect patient death rates and readmissions – and we can’t afford to let any of them fall through the cracks.

But it may be she wants more free baby-sitting service. You say you have her children almost every weekend. That hardly seems to me like she’s keeping them from you. Remind her working a full-time job and taking care of her children the amount of time you already do is as much as you can handle, and you need time with your daughter and her son. There are only so many hours in a day, and you need time to rest if you’re going to go the distance. If that’s not enough for her, so be it. If she chooses to punish you for it, it is her children who will also suffer – not just you.

akantecki@shawmedia.com Dundee-Crown’s girls basketball players raised up both hands – showing all 10 fingers – after Thursday’s Class 4A McHenry Regional championship victory over Crystal Lake South, 45-22.

The Chargers collected their third straight regional title, but D-C’s “two hands up” look after a convincing win against the Gators had to do with another impressive streak: 10 straight wins.

Fans joined in on the postgame fun, pictures and selfies, raising their hands and displaying signs of unwavering support. One sign – despite a common misspelling – might have summed up D-C’s wild run best: “Ridiculus.”

It really has been.

On Jan. 10, a 53-38 loss to then-Fox Valley Conference leader Hampshire looked devastating to D-C’s conference title chances, sending the reeling Chargers to 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the FVC. A conference title really wasn’t even on their minds.

What happened after that game was a remarkable turnaround, including eight straight wins to earn a share of the conference title. D-C then beat Prairie Ridge, 55-34, in a semifinal, before defeating South to earn its third regional championship in as many years.

The Chargers (19-11) last had a regional streak that long when they won four in a row from 2000 to 2003.

“Once we were down in that rut, we were still hopeful,” said senior Paige Gieseke, who averages 10 points, five rebounds and three assists a game.

“We were still hopeful that we could still finish strong. We definitely put in all the extra work and time to make it a successful season, which it was.

“And we’re not done yet, we’re going to keep going.”

Standing in the way of D-C’s path to its first sectional title since 2003 is Rockford Boylan, a team also riding a 10-game winning streak. Boylan, ranked fifth in The Associated Press’ most recent Class 4A state poll, dismantled Auburn and Guilford in its regional by a combined score of 120-56.

The Chargers play Boylan in a Class 4A Hampshire Sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Monday. The winner plays either Streamwood or Rockford East in the

The other local team with this year’s longest winning streak, Johnsburg, hosts a Class 3A sectional semifinal against Carmel at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Johnsburg (24-8) has won eight straight, including a forfeit win over Chicago Senn in a regional semifinals.

Boylan (29-1) – which swept the Northern Illinois Conference, going 16-0 – has dropped only one game this season, a 70-60 loss to Rock Island, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 4A, at the DeKalb Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament.

Both D-C and Boylan have played 30 games, but Boylan is averaging almost 20 more points a game (62.3 vs. 43.1). The Titans had a 19-game winning streak to start the season, defeating Huntley, South, D-C and Jacobs in their first four games by an average score of 54-28.

Boylan beat the Chargers, 56-27, on Nov. 19 to send the Chargers to a 0-3 start. D-C lost two out of its next three to fall to 1-5.

The key to the Chargers’ turnaround, coach Sarah Miller said, has been on the defensive side.

“It’s not done yet,” said Miller, who is 52-48 in two-plus seasons. “I’m proud of how far we have come and grew as a group, but we’ve talked about this being a second season. A third regional title was not the goal. We want a sectional. We want to keep making history.”

“We’ve got to keep riding with defense. I was so proud of everyone.

We’ve got those powerhouse leaders, but our freshmen stepped up and

played well in moments, and our bench was loud. Our team culture, ... I was just so proud of everybody.”

Senior forward Allison Michalski, who scored 19 points in the regional final, leads D-C with 10.5 points, five rebounds and three steals a game.

Gieseke, a 6-foot guard, is shooting a blistering 54 percent from the field and has a knack for finding her teammates at the most crucial times.

Junior Maddie Tripp, a 6-2 center, averages 5.5 points and five rebounds, and juniors Kennedy White and Anna Kieltyka both are averaging more than four points a game.

“Our fans have been super supportive, we have our coaches’ support and we all trust in each other,” Michalski said. “It’s been a great run right now.

We’re all feeling very confident, and we want more.”

While D-C is looking to capture its first sectional title in 14 years, Johnsburg is aiming for two straight. The Skyhawks – who last year set a school record with 28 wins before falling to North Lawndale College Prep, 50-41, in a supersectional – will have to get by Carmel (19-11) first.

The winner will play Antioch or St. Viator in the sectional final Thursday.

Johnsburg (24-8) took care of business against rival Richmond-Burton, 75-38, in the Class 3A R-B Regional final to earn back-to-back regional titles for the first time since winning seven straight from 2005 to 2011.

Well-liked coach touched many lives in his 92-plus years

Chuck Cuda had several brushes with greatness in his younger years.

While attending Morton High School in Cicero, he once caddied for Bob Hope, and was a starter on the Mustangs’ 1941 boys basketball state championship team.

Cuda also guarded Waukegan star Otto Graham, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, in a basketball game, and he was basketball teammates with Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Robin Roberts at Michigan State.

Between high school and college, he spent four years with the U.S. Army Air Force as an instructor for B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-29 Bombers.

“He lived one [heck] of a life,” McHenry resident Frank Cuda said of his father, who died Jan. 27 at age 92.

Although Chuck Cuda achieved excellence as an athlete, he really stood out later as a coach. For 38 years, he taught and coached at McHenry, proudly mentioning that he only missed six days in those 38 years because of illnesses.

Cuda left an indelible mark with athletes, particularly in golf, where he was the Warriors’ coach for 37 years.

Cuda’s 1982 team finished second in the Class AA state tournament; his 1978 team took third. Cuda was inducted into the Illinois Coaches Association Hall of Fame for golf in the early 2000s.

“He affected so many kids, and he had a good time doing it,” Frank Cuda said. “You see any of the people he ever coached and they all say, ‘Charlie was just fun to have as a coach.’ He was successful at it. He knew what he was doing, but on the other hand, he made sure everyone enjoyed it and had a good time. He had a more easy-going style, but got the most out of the kids, and just enjoyed being with the kids all those years.”

Jim Buenzli, who owns the Golf Academy, a teaching facility on Terra Cotta Avenue in Crystal Lake, played for Cuda on McHenry’s 1978 thirdplace team.

“He was totally fair,” Buenzli said.

“If you were beating somebody ahead of you, you got their spot. He didn’t care if you were a freshman, sopho-

He rewarded you for working hard and making yourself better. If you got a little lazy and lost your spot, it would kick you in the butt a little bit. You can’t ask for more of a coach than that right there.”

Buenzli recalled his sophomore year when Cuda often had Buenzli and three classmates in the lineup. With that varsity experience, two years later, the Warriors took third place.

Former McHenry golf coach Jeff Varda assisted Cuda, then took over the program when Cuda retired.

He later taught and coached Cuda’s grandchildren because Frank and his brother Steve both remained in McHenry. Annie Cuda, Chuck’s widow, was married to him for 69 years and still lives in their McHenry home.

Although Frank talked about his father’s easy-going coaching style, Jeff Varda said Chuck also had a fire burning inside.

“He was serious about his coaching; he had a down-to-business kind of style when it came to competition,” Varda said. “He was competitive, no doubt about it.”

Varda laughed when remembering one of Cuda’s biggest pet peeves.

“He really disliked his golfers playing baseball,” Varda said. “He was firmly convinced you couldn’t make that transition from the baseball swing to the golf swing. He was kind of old-school.”

But Cuda himself developed a reputation as a pretty good 16-inch softball

player around McHenry, in addition to his love for golf.

Chuck Cuda played golf and basketball at Michigan State, attending school on the G.I. Bill. When he came to McHenry, he taught business and typing and started his illustrious coaching career.

After he retired, Cuda became McHenry’s official scorekeeper for basketball games. Pat Wirtz, a lifelong McHenry resident who later taught with Cuda, never had him as a coach, but has other stories.

“I must have been in eighth grade, Frank was in sixth, and we’d go to their house, Mrs. Cuda still lives there, and play basketball,” Wirtz said. “Charlie and Frank against Jerry Glosson and I, 2-on-2. Charlie was great. He liked to throw the ball up against the backboard and when the grade school kids turned around, he’d grab the rebound and go make an easy layup.”

Wirtz said Cuda used to organize basketball and co-ed volleyball games for faculty members. Wirtz and his wife, Ann, eventually took over as scorekeepers when Cuda gave up that job.

“When I was teaching at East Campus, I was in special needs in the resource room and I’d be in the hallways,” Wirtz said. “Charlie might see me from his classroom and talk a little bit. He was a very friendly person. I don’t think anybody disliked him; he was just a good guy.”

State like his father, and a couple of years ago, one of Frank’s friends spoke with Spartans men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo. So when Michigan State came to play at Northwestern, Chuck and Frank were invited to the shootaround the afternoon before the game. They watched the Spartans and chatted with Izzo.

As they were walking through the Welsh-Ryan Arena hallways, Chuck stopped when he saw a picture of Graham, who played basketball, football and baseball at Northwestern.

“He said, ‘Otto Graham, I guarded him,’ ” Frank said with a chuckle. “My dad would never brag about that stuff.

What a life – Bob Hope, Robin Roberts, Otto Graham … and he’s just here in McHenry, coaching and teaching.”

And achieving his own greatness.

At Chuck Cuda’s funeral luncheon, Frank’s son, Andrew, eulogized his grandfather.

“I grew up in McHenry, and I can’t tell you how many times someone who I did not know told me how much they loved playing for my grandfather,” said Andrew, the oldest of seven grandchildren. “But it wasn’t just his athletes who praised him. His students did as well. It was through my grandfather that I came to realize how much positive impact one single person can have on a community. My grandfather leaves behind not just a wife, two sons and seven grandchildren, he leaves behind an entire community – a community that would have been very different without him.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Jose Abreu traditionally has been an early arrival to spring training, a worker bee whose serious attention to detail and his hitting craft says “come early, stay late.”

This year, Abreu started on time. Not that he hasn’t been working – he worked out hard at home during the offseason getting his large frame in shape for his fourth major league season. It’s just that, at 30, Abreu seems to be seeing the good in making sure there is enough in the tank to get through a 162game season.

On Sunday, in his first meeting with reporters at spring training, he seemed resigned to the fact that getting off his feet more often and being a designated hitter more might be in his best interest.

Thursday’s 75 points against R-B was the most Johnsburg has scored all season. Coach Brad Frey – who is 97-87 in five-plus seasons, including three straight campaigns with 20-plus wins – said he was surprised his team played so efficiently despite a 10-day layoff.

“We came out Thursday, and apparently there was no rust shake off,” Frey said. “I thought we played one of our better games all season. ... I guess my concerns were unfounded. The girls came out and played really well.”

Frey believes last year’s success has had a positive effect on this year’s team. The Skyhawks essentially are the same team, minus one starter, Jazza Johns. Junior Kayla Stefka, Morgan Madsen and Megan Madsen have made the loss less noticeable with their dominating play.

Stefka (8.8 points, 6.7 rebounds) already is among the school’s all-time leaders with 125 blocks, and Morgan Madsen (10.2 points) and Megan Madsen (2.5 assists), both sophomores, average seven-plus rebounds a game Stefka believes rebounding will carry the Skyhawks far in the postseason.

Renteria knows Abreu doesn’t like to DH. He also is confident in his own assessment of what’s best for Abreu and the team overall. So Abreu will DH some.

“Absolutely,” Renteria said. “Not only him but there are probably three or four guys. We are going to use that slot to kind of alleviate being in that both-sides-of-the-ball situation when we have to, when it accommodates a particular need for us.

“These guys want to grind and play through a lot of things, which we are very happy they do, but I have to be able to use my own common sense and my eyes and my conversations with our staff to see what it is we can alleviate these guys from actually being out there on both sides of the ball at times.”

Abreu started by saying he’s impressed with the young talent in camp.

“The atmosphere is good,” he said. “Also, I’m impressed with the kind of communication Rick is having with the players and coaching staff.

“If we can keep rebounding the basketball at both ends of the floor like we have been, with the type of energy and fundamentals we’ve shown, we’ll be tough to beat,” said the 6-0 Stefka.

Leading the Skyhawks on offense is junior shooting guard Aannah Interrante, who averages 16.2 points and leads the team with 88 3s. She had a six-game stretch this season where she scored 156 points, averaging 26 points a game.

Interrante scored 22 in the team’s regional final win against R-B, and also had 22 points in the team’s final regular-season game against Marian Central on Feb. 6.

Four-year varsity player Cortland Sommerfeldt, who left Thursday’s game with a knee injury and is getting an MRI on Monday before determining whether she can play in the sectional semifinal, said the team has higher expectations this season after getting so close to state a year ago.

As you’d expect, Abreu likes having a boss who speaks his language.

“That’s direct communication between us and that’s very, very good.”

Abreu struggled, by his standards, though the first four months of 2016, then rallied to finish with a .293 average, 25 homers and 100 RBIs. He hit .362 with 18 RBIs in August and .316 with 26 RBIs in the last month.

“Yes, those were different challenges, especially in my mind,” he said of the first four months. “I never in my life experienced some kind of struggles like I did last year. But that put me in a better position as a player, as a person, too.

I’m in a better position now for this season because I learned from the experience.”

When the season was over, Abreu said he held a meeting at his house with his family to “explain to them how the season was.”

“Sometimes they can’t register how the process is in a long major league season. I explained the challenges, the problems. Once the meeting was over, last season was in the past.”

Sommerfeldt’s injury, contributing nine points and six assists.

“I know some of my teammates are saying the same thing, but we all feel like we have unfinished business after last season,” said Sommerfeldt, who recently became the program’s all-time leader in steals. “Hopefully, we use that as a learning experience and can make it to state.”

Frey said it’s hard to compare this year’s team to last year, but he does notice at least one difference.

“It’s hard to gauge how well you’re playing at the end of the year when you’ve had one game, but we were more subdued after we won Thursday,” Frey said. “It was more businesslike, and I think they have loftier visions.

“Last year, we just played until we got beat. We’re still having fun this year, but I think they’re all looking at a bigger prize.”

“Right near the top is a few events in my hometown, where just having them give me a standing ovation and seeing how much it meant to them and how much pride your hometown takes in what you’re doing abroad. It’s special to know that you were able to do something that made a lot of people happy.”

As for the present, Zobrist (who turns 36 in May) is getting ready for another season of being a super-utility player.

“If you’re taking a regular out of the lineup and they perceive a big drop-off regarding the lack of their presence, they really don’t like to do that. With our guys and the number of really quality players that we have, when you give somebody a day off, the guy getting the day off doesn’t mind as much.”

Zobrist said he’s unsure how things will unfold this year. His versatility is one thing working in his favor, so much so that Maddon said that there should be a category for super-utility player in the All-Star Game.

Zobrist has won back-to-back World Series, in 2015 with Kansas City and last year with the Cubs, for whom he hit .357 (10-for-28), including the goahead RBI double in the 10th inning of Game 7 at Cleveland.

“My favorite thing that I experienced from all the celebrations and people sharing their experience of the celebration with me, I think the biggest thing that stuck out to me was how that championship really connected families and family members,” he said.

“For so many people, it was almost like a reunion of sorts, even loved ones who have gone before, just a remembrance of times in the past where they had always hoped that the Cubs would win together and it hadn’t happened. For it to finally happen, I think it was a family experience. You realize that it’s not really about us. It’s about families experiencing life together and enjoying the entertainment of watching Cubs baseball together. For them, it’s family time.”

Maddon to ease starters into game action

bmiles@dailyherald.com MESA, Ariz. – Cactus League games for the Cubs will begin Saturday, but don’t look for any of the big-name pitchers to see action in the first several games.

Because of the short offseason, manager Joe Maddon is going to take it easy on Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks and John Lackey.

Lefties Brett Anderson and Mike Montgomery, who will be in the mix for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, figure to get early starts, as will some of the prospects. The Cubs have 40 pitchers in camp.

As for the “Big Four,” Maddon said Sunday it will be “into March” be-

fore they get game action.

Although several teams have announced their starters for Opening Day, Maddon said he has not thought ahead to opening night, April 2 in St. Louis. Jake Arrieta started last year’s opener in Anaheim. Either he or Lester figures to get the start against the Cardinals.

Life behind the plate: Schwarber

Kyle Schwarber said so far, so good on the catching end of things. Schwarber has caught one bullpen session, working last week with John Lackey.

Rain washed out mound work Saturday and Sunday, but the Cubs are

limiting Schwarber to one or two days a week behind the plate as he makes a comeback from last April’s knee surgery. He was able to be the designated hitter in last fall’s World Series games at Cleveland.

“Oh, yeah, it was definitely nice to be back there,” Schwarber said Sunday. “I haven’t done it in almost 12 months, so it was good to be back there.

It’s fun to challenge yourself in some ways back there. It was cool.”

Schwarber set up with one leg out, but said that’s no big deal.

“Everyone thinks it’s a new style, but it’s not really new,” he said. “I did it last year. No one really noticed it.

I just did it with my left knee down.

It’s just a little adjustment from the left knee to the right knee.”

Keeping the faith: Maddon said he has full faith in relievers Pedro Stop and Hector Rondon, both of whom were injured late last year and had a tough time regaining their usual form.

Strop suffered a knee injury while Rondon suffered a triceps strain in August. Strop’s was a freak injury, as he hurt his knee trying to field a ball.

“It’s not a lack of trust; he just got hurt,” Maddon said. “When you get hurt like that at that time of the year, it’s hard to play catch-up.”

Maddon said he blames himself with Rondon for getting “greedy” in his use of him. Rondon lost his closer’s job when the Cubs traded for Aroldis Chapman in July. This season, Rondon will work as a setup man to Wade Davis, who came to the Cubs in a trade from Kansas City.

MESA, Ariz. – When asked if there were any residual benefits to being the World Series MVP, Ben Zobrist didn’t hesitate.

“Yeah, sure, I got one sitting out in the parking lot,” he said Sunday, a few minutes after the Cubs held a rain-curtailed workout.

Zobrist was referring to his 50th anniversary Chevy Camaro convertible he won for being MVP. Of course, there were a whole bunch of honors and privileges that came with helping the Cubs win the World Series last fall.

Among them were a whirlwind trip to Disney World, being the grand marshal of a parade in Franklin, Tennessee, where he and his family reside, and getting the key to his hometown of Eureka (just east of Peoria).

“I’ve got a few extra keys on my key ring now,” he said.

And then there were some pretty big moments on some pretty big stages.

“Getting to go to the White House and meet President Obama and the first lady at the time, and a few weeks after that, I got to go the National Prayer Breakfast events and meet a whole bunch of congressmen and senators and then shake the hand of President (Donald) Trump and Vice President (Mike) Pence,” he said. “Being put in arenas that you’re not used to being put in just because you were able to do something as an athlete is pretty special.

Manager Joe Maddon said he had a “great conversation” with Zobrist on Sunday morning, and the topic of rest came up.

Another factor affecting Zobrist’s playing time will be the continued development of Javier Baez, who earned regular playing time last season at second base because of his exceptional defense.

“He understands how important it is with the rest component,” Maddon said. “We’re going to continue to talk about it. With the depth, we can do things like that. You could give guys rest and feel as though you’re not giving anything up on the field because that’s also important to the guy that you’re keeping out.

Kane, Hawks have fun in rout

mlazerus@suntimes.com BUFFALO, N.Y. – After he somehow slipped the puck past Buffalo goaltender Robin Lehner with a sneaky wrist shot from the right dot, Marian Hossa didn’t raise his arms in triumph, didn’t pump his fist, didn’t even smile. He just skated, almost sheepishly, toward the bench.

After he left Lehner flailing helplessly like a fish out of water with a dizzying bit of stickhandling, Patrick Kane punched the air and yelled, “It’s showtime!” in giddy celebration behind the Buffalo bench.

Hossa’s was the game-winner.

Kane’s made it 5-1.

“I don’t even know what I was saying after that – kind of blacked out in that moment,” Kane joked. “A little bit too jacked-up for a 5-1 goal, too.”

But, hey, hockey’s fun when things are going well. And things are going well for the Blackhawks these days, with Sunday’s 5-1 rout of Kane’s hometown Buffalo Sabres their sixth win in seven games, and their second straight strong performance out of the bye week.

The Hawks’ first four goals came from four different lines, Jonathan Toews continued his hot streak, Kane reached the 20-goal plateau for the 10th straight season, and Scott Darling made 25 saves for the victory – the Hawks’ 11th straight over Buffalo, and the 399th of Joel Quenneville’s Chicago tenure.

Quenneville talks a lot about the Hawks being at their best when they’re rolling four lines. They’re even better when all four lines are rolling.

“I think this is what the coaches were trying to find since the beginning, trying to find four lines that can score,” said Richard Panik, who had an eventful night with two penalties, several golden scoring chances and an assist. “And now, finally, every line is playing unreal.”

The win was especially validating after Saturday night’s dominant effort against Edmonton ended in a hard-luck loss. The Minnesota Wild – Tuesday’s opponent in another Central Division showdown – keep piling up wins and might seem almost out of reach, but the way the Hawks see it, if they keep playing the way they’ve been playing the past few weeks, it might not matter.

“That’s kind of the identity of our team – when we’ve got four lines going, we play really well and we’re hard to stop,” Ryan Hartman said. “We’ve just got to keep that up.”

The West bench gave a hearty mock cheer, acknowledging the hubbub over the duo’s frosty relationship since Durant bolted the Thunder for the Warriors in the offseason.

The players tried their hardest to entertain. Westbrook tried to bounce the ball off the glass and dunk it but failed. LeBron James tried a bounce pass from beyond the 3-point arc for an alley-oop – Durant, “guarding” James, blocked the ball after it bounced and turned it into a layup at the other end.

Thomas tried a dunk-contest slam – bouncing the ball and jumping to dunk it, but missed. He grabbed the ball, dribbled into the corner and nailed a three-pointer.

James connected on one showtime play on a fast break when he threw the ball off the glass with his left hand and dunked it with his right hand from the other side. He slapped hands with a fan in the first row on his way to the other end of the court.

The frivolity continued in the second half when James took a jump shot from just inside the half-court line – and missed. On a West turnover, West guard Steph Curry literally laid down just below the free throw line to clear the way for East forward Giannis Antetokounmpo to drive for a fast-break dunk.

BLACKHAWKS 5, SABRES 1

NEW ORLEANS – Jimmy Butler will never forget the his first All-Star Game experience.

“It was so surreal,” the Bulls’ swingman said. “It’s like, ‘Well, maybe I do belong here.’ That’s all I was thinking.”

But this time Butler was at a different level. Selected as a reserve in his first two All-Star Games in 2015 and last year, Butler was introduced as a starter for the East team Sunday night at the Smoothie King Center, with LeBron James and ahead of East reserve Carmelo Jimmy Butler Anthony.

“Now it’s how to get here every year,” Butler said. “That’s the fun part. That’s the next challenge – how you continue to play at a very high level and maintain that year-in and year-out. A lot of guys have done it for 10-plus years. Hopefully, I’m one of them.”

Although honored to be a starter, Butler was a little out of his element in a rag-tag game that was not much more than a half-time entertainment show of NBA-level circus feats. Butler had six points on 3-of-4 shooting in the West’s 192-182 victory in an almost totally noncompetitive game.

Chicago native Anthony Davis of the hometown New Orleans Pelicans was the game’s MVP, scoring 52 points on 26-of-39 shooting to lead the West.

With the teams scoring at a cartoonish rate, Butler often was still on one end of the floor when a basket was scored at the other. He joined the scoring fun when he took a pass on the baseline and drove for an uncontested dunk. Almost everything was uncontested in this game.

The players had their fun with it.

At one point, 6-foot-11 DeAndre Jordan came out of a timeout seriously guarding 5-9 Isaiah Thomas. He quickly switched off.

There was one notable bit of intrigue in the early going when brothers-turned-embittered-rivals Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook both were on the floor for the West after Westbook entered the game with 6:07 left in the first quarter.
