The Associated Press NEW YORK – She’s no longer a Rumor at America’s top dog show.

A German shepherd called Rumor, who just missed winning at the Westminster Kennel Club last year, came back to score a big victory Monday night, beating out favored Preston the puli in the herding group.

To the cheers of the crowd at Madison Square Garden, Rumor joined a miniature poodle, a Pekingese and a Norwegian elkhound in the best-of-seven final ring. She’ll be joined by three more group winners still to be picked Tuesday night, right before the champ is chosen.

Rumor was the nation’s No. 1 show dog last year when she came to the Garden with more than 100 overall titles. But she fell short when a German shorthaired pointer named CJ won in a surprise, and it was thought that Rumor would retire.

Asked about 5-year-old Rumor’s chances this time, handler Kent Boyles said, “I have no idea. ... You never know.”

“Really good competition” Boyles said, adding that he was “pretty nervous.”

Nearly 2,800 dogs across 202 breeds and varieties were entered. Plenty of them were early crowd favorites at the mostly filled Garden, if not winners.

A toy fox terrier just wanted to stand still.

A papillon lived up to its name – “butterfly,” in French – by fluttering around. And a sloughi, one of three new breeds at this year’s show, kept yawning.

Preston came in with 95 career wins, known for a black, corded coat so thick that it’s often hard to see any of his features. It’s also hard to handle – his hair takes up to five hours to dry, helped by a couple of industrial carpet blowers that create a “swirly, tornado effect,” handler and co-owner Lisa Pitts said.

In an upset, Duffy the Norwegian elkhound took the hound group. She topped Lucy the borzoi, second overall at Westminster last year, and Gia the greyhound, champ of the National Dog Show televised last Thanksgiving Day. Hound judge Polly Smith perked up some ears, too. In an interview shown on the scoreboard, she started out, “This bitch epitomized type.” That’s the proper term for a female dog – predictably, it drew laughs and guffaws from the crowd.

Chuckie the Pekingese won the toy group. Not yet 2, he already has a legacy as his pop Malachy won Westminster in 2012. A black miniature poodle pranced off with the nonsporting group.

The top of the sporting, working and terriers will be picked Tuesday night, followed immediately by best in show.

kcraver@shawmedia.com LAKEWOOD – The Village Board is set to vote Tuesday evening on an ordinance that would rescind McHenry County’s last remaining ban on video gambling.

An ordinance that would allow for video gambling within village limits is on the agenda for the meeting, which starts at 7 p.m. at Turnberry Country Club. The new management of the club at 9600 Turnberry Trail approached village leaders in October about undoing the ban.

Should Lakewood reverse the ban, the country club and three of the four other businesses holding village liquor licenses would be eligible for gaming permits.

Lakewood was one of six local governments that banned video gambling under an opt-out in the 2009 state law that legalized it to finance a $31 billion capital plan.

Five of the six have since changed their minds, the most recent being Crystal Lake, after bar and restaurant owners complained that the bans put them at a competitive disadvantage.

Establishments that serve alcohol, truck stops, and fraternal and veterans organizations can have up to five of the machines under state law.

The state gets 30 percent of the proceeds, 5 percent of which goes back to local governments. The remaining 70 percent is split between the business and the company that operates the machines.

The machines under state law must be located in an area accessible only to people at least 21 years old, and in the case of restaurants, must be within view of an adult employee. Machines cannot be visible from outside the building.

Woodstock reversed its ban in 2012. Cary, Algonquin and the McHenry County Board reversed their bans in 2013, and Crystal Lake reversed its ban last year.

Associate judge appointed to fill vacancy in 22nd Judicial Circuit

jreiland@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Beating out nearly 20 other candidates, Mark R. Facchini of Crystal Lake was named the newest associate judge of the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court serving McHenry County.

Facchini will fill the associate position that recently was vacated by Judge Robert Wilbrandt. Wilbrandt was promoted to circuit judge by the Illinois Supreme Court after Circuit Judge Maureen McIntyre’s retirement at the end of last year.

All 20 applicants who applied were interviewed by the circuit judges and then

evaluated by the Illinois State Bar Association and the McHenry County Bar Association. Each circuit judge then voted for one candidate.

Facchini earned his bachelor’s degree from Northeastern Illinois University in 1999 and his law degree from Chicago Kent College of Law. He worked as an associate attorney at Foley & Lardner LLP for a year before taking a job with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office from 2003 to 2006.

His most recent position was with Donahue & Walsh P.C. as a criminal defense attorney.

Facchini declined to comment Monday on his new appointment.

Village Board chooses new police chief

jreiland@shawmedia.com OAKWOOD HILLS – Veteran North Chicago police officer Valiza Nash has been named Oakwood Hills’ newest chief of police.

The Oakwood Hills Village Board unanimously voted Feb. 7 to appoint Nash to the position at a special meeting, Village President Paul Smith said. Nash will replace Peter Goldman, who was involved in a car crash last fall and has not been able to return and perform his duties, Smith said.

Nash, a Gurnee resident, is a sergeant and shift commander in North Chicago.

She is a graduate of Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, and is working on a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at Columbia College of Missouri.

Nash is believed to be the first woman and African-American police chief in Oakwood Hills, Smith said. There were three other candidates who applied for the position.

“I think she was the most qualified, hardest-working and most energetic candidate,” he said. “We just wanted the best candidate who can do the best job for the village.”

Goldman was a part-time chief, and all

police officers in the village are part time as well. Nash will work part time until she retires from North Chicago in the spring, when she then will work full time. Smith said the village has not had a full-time chief in many years.

“A part-time department and chief is very good, but having a full-time chief is even better. … It really enhances the department,” Smith said.

Smith said that he hopes the department will focus its efforts moving forward on community-oriented policing, which could include police department-sponsored events for members of the village to attend.

New rustic restaurant opens downtown

750 Cucina Rustica restaurant features dishes inspired by Italy, the home country of co-owners Filippo LoBue and his son, Massimo LoBue, including this homemade gelato and caramel pecan bread pudding.

hprokop@shawmedia.com CARY – One of downtown Cary’s newest restaurants has started serving Italian meals inspired by family recipes.

More than 50 people came out to 750 Cucina Rustica for its opening night Friday, co-owner Filippo LoBue said.

The restaurant, 7 Jandus Road, features a 750-degree brick oven that is used to cook dishes, including a variety of pizzas, pastas and meats.

“We are excited, and we know it’s going to be real good and people are going to love it,” LoBue said. “And every day we are going to improve a little more.”

The restaurant also is owned by LoBue’s son, Massimo LoBue, who was born in Sicily and came to the U.S. with his family when he was 4 years old.

Many of the recipes featured on 750 Cucina Rustica’s menu are inspired

by Massimo LoBue’s mother, Antonia LoBue. Pasta served at the restaurant is made fresh in house, or imported from Antonia LoBue’s cousin in southern Italy, Massimo LoBue said.

Some dishes are served right in the cast-iron bakeware they were cooked in, Massimo LoBue said.

The 3,300-square-foot space underwent an estimated $300,000 renovation, with some help from the village’s revolving loan fund program and facade grant program.

The main dining area seats about 96 people, and there is a video gaming space with five terminals and a bar with an entrance off Spring Street.

“It’s a very rustic feeling,” Massimo LoBue said, adding that the restaurant is decorated with old Italian advertisement posters and antiques, some from

his mother.

The family members also are part-owners of Incontro A Tavola in South Barrington and ZaZa’s Tavola Italiana in Lake Barrington.

“What’s special is that it’s family run, so by being family run, we’re going to care about the people, we are going to care about everything that’s going on,” Filippo LoBue said.

The restaurant is only open for dinner, and plans to add lunches in the summer, Massimo LoBue said.

• Stand on a hard floor near a table or countertop for support.

• Bend one knee and lift the foot – if you’re left-handed, stand on your left leg and lift the right foot; do the opposite if you’re right-handed. You don’t need to lift it high, just enough to keep it off the floor.

• Now without holding onto anything slowly count the number of seconds you can hold that position without putting your foot back down.

• Repeat the test 3 times, and then add up your total time and divide it by 3 to find your average balance time.

(For example, if test 1 was 4 seconds, test 2 was 8 seconds, and test 3 was 6 seconds, you’d add up 4, 8, and 6 to get 18. Divide by 3, and your average balance time is 6 seconds.)

Coroner IDs man who died in house fire Sunday night

jreiland@shawmedia.com LAKE IN THE HILLS – A Lake in the Hills man who was injured in a house fire Sunday evening has died.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and police units responded about 9:12 p.m. Sunday to the 900 block of Creekview Lane for a report of a house fire with a person trapped inside.

Assistant Chief Mike Kern said the fire, which originated from the master bedroom on the second floor of the two-story residence, was brought under control in less than 10 minutes.

A man who was trapped inside the residence was removed and taken to

Centegra Hospital – Huntley, where he later died that same night, authorities said.

On Monday, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased man as 61-year-old Arthur W. Knutson. Preliminary findings from the autopsy revealed he suffered both burns to his body and inhalation of soot, but the cause and manner of death still are under investigation.

Additional testing, such as carbon monoxide testing, is pending.

The fire caused an estimated $75,000 in damage, and the cause remains under investigation.

The Crystal Lake Fire Department and Huntley Fire Protection District also responded to the scene.

LOCAL BRIEF McHenry crash sends 3 people to hospital, fire official says

McHENRY – Three people were sent to the hospital with minor injuries Monday after a two-vehicle crash in an unincorporated area near McHenry, a fire official said.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Mike Majercik said that about 5:53 p.m. crews responded to a crash at the intersection of Ringwood

Road and South Solon Mills Road.

Majercik said a car and SUV were involved in the crash, and it was unclear what direction each had been traveling.

All three people involved were taken to Centegra Hospital – McHenry with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Majercik said the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

Born: June 12, 1942; in Belvedere, IL Died: February 11, 2017; in Belvidere, IL Gale L. “Butch” Kunde, 74, of Belvidere passed away February 11, 2017 surrounded by his family.

He was born June 12, 1942 in Belvidere, the son of Harvey and Helen (Bloedorn) Kunde. In July of 1961 he married Bonnie Nelson. Butch worked in the woodworking

profession all his working years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman but loved all sports. Butch served as a Little League coach for many years and he was also a lifetime Atlanta Braves fan.

Butch was a very social man. He enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, family and friends. He was a social member of the American Legion and VFW and he liked pinochle with friends. Butch was also known to play the gambling machines and lotto from time to time.

He also enjoyed crossword puzzles. All holidays brought a special joy for Butch, but he especially loved Christmas. Most of all Butch was a proud and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Bonnie; his sons, Terry (Mary), Jim (Lisa), Tony (Marianne); his grandchildren, Ryan, Mallory, Cassie, Cody, Jake, Sam, Troy, Alexis, and Daniel; step-grandchildren, Brandan and Travis Brock; great-grandchildren, Graham, Beau, Michael, and one on the way; his mother, Helen Kunde Meinke; and his siblings, Bonnie (Bob) Oser, Ginny (Ed) Sytsma, and Larry Kunde.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harvey.

Nicolas “Nico” Michael Petrucci was welcomed into heaven February 11, 2017, after a courageous battle only the toughest warriors are chosen to fight. And boy did he put up a fight!

Nico was born October 27th, 2016 lighting up the life of everyone who had the chance to meet him. Even though his time here was short, he made an impact on thousands of “team Nico warriors” with his sneaky smile and eyes that could tell a story or give you looks that you knew you were in trouble.

He was one of the happiest babies even up until God decided he needed to come home, giving everyone big smiles, and letting them know he was there.

He was born a shooting star and will always be remembered and loved as that.

Nico was welcomed through heavens gates and into the arms of his grandpa Rick Petrucci and grandma Debbie (Calendo) Petrucci; his great-grandma, Joyce Calendo; and great-grandparents, Marlo and Joan Werkheiser.

Even though we sometimes question why he was chosen so early, we are comforted knowing he was welcomed into heaven with loving arms reaching out ready to continue loving him like he was loved here on earth.

Nico left behind and will be deeply missed by his very proud daddy, Dominic Petrucci; an equally proud mommy, Lindsey Coffman; three older siblings, Abigail Warmoth, Nathan Debelak and Anthony Debelak; Papa and Nana Brad and Jill Hawk, Terry and Lynn Coffman; great-grandpa, Michael Calendo; and great-grandpa, and Grandma Rich and Ruth Petrucci, and lots of Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and dear friends.

BUTTER THE COMFORT DOG CHARITY DANCE – Jay and Jennifer Kinzler pose with Butter the K-9 comfort dog. The Golden Retriever had to have a cancerous leg removed last year. She still eagerly visits retirement homes, hospitals and shutins to comfort those feeling lonely and depressed or as a welcome distraction from pain and infirmity. A dance to help raise money for Butter’s living expenses will be held from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Feb. 18 at St. John Lutheran Church Activity Center, 300 Jefferson St., Algonquin. Hosted

by The Greater Fox Valley Chapter of USA Dance, the event will include a free Rumba dance lesson taught by Frank and Jackie Penze. Music will be provided by DJ Dr. Rod. Dress code is dressy casual. The ASSOCIATED PRESS DECATUR – Two Illinois lawmakers have proposed a plan to offer tax credits to biotechnology businesses in hopes of boosting agricultural jobs in central Illinois.

The legislation, introduced by Republican state Sen. Chapin Rose of Mahomet and Democratic state Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill, would provide incentives to produce and sell new renewable products made from biomass and other renewable sources, the Decatur Herald & Review reported.

Manar said the state is strategically poised to lead the development of new renewable products.

“We have leading biotechnology companies, large and small, that are leading research and development efforts on these innovative products, and we have critical mass in infrastructure to produce and transport these renewables around the world,” Manar said.

Rose said there’s potential for Decatur to be at the center of a new $20 billion biotechnology industry. He said the intent is to use Decatur’s

Robert Daiber is the Madison County regional superintendent of schools.

He said the state faces a real financial crisis, including the ongoing budget impasse, and the governor’s “chief responsibility” is to submit a spending plan. He said his candidacy will focus on “compromising collaboration.”

The 60-year-old was a public school teacher for nearly three decades, a Madison County Board member and Marine Township supervisor, among other positions.

He ran unsuccessfully for an Illinois House seat three times in 1990s.

Chicago police: Girls shot weren’t intended targets

CHICAGO – Police said the two young girls who were critically wounded in separate weekend shootings on Chicago’s South Side were not the intended victims.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in an email Monday that the girls, ages 11 and 12, were shot in the head Saturday night in areas with heavy gang activity by people who were aiming at someone else. Both remain in critical condition, and no arrests have been made.

He said police are reviewing city surveillance footage from the area but are also hoping either attack may have been caught on private video.

Guglielmi said the 12-year-old was shot while playing with friends and the 11-year-old was shot while sitting in a parked car.

Surgery museum plans sex-reassignment exhibit

CHICAGO – A Chicago museum chronicling the history of surgery through medical artifacts, paintings and sculptures is planning to open an exhibit later this year on sex-reassignment procedures.

Curators at the International Museum of Surgical Science said the issue has become more prominent in social, cultural and political conversations, and the museum hopes to contribute to the discussion in medical and surgical terms, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Collin Pressler, the museum’s director of exhibitions, said he hopes to “demystify” the “relatively obscure” topic.

“The museum doesn’t shy away from real and accurate depictions of surgery,” he said. “That’s how you educate.”

He hopes the exhibit will open before the end of the year as museum officials work on fundraising and designing the display.

About 700,000 people in the U.S. identify as transgender, according to a 2016 University of California study. Up to 500 sex-change operations are performed

Historic sites to offer electronic donation option

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois soon will give visitors a chance to donate online to free-admission historic sites such as Abraham Lincoln’s Tomb and the Old State Capitol.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reported that such sites have relied on suggested donations from visitors, but they haven’t had a way to pay online.

The new electronic payment system is expected to be operating in a couple of weeks.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency collected more than $494,000 in donations at 22 historic sites last year.

Ryan Prehn of the agency told the newspaper that Illinois is behind other nearby states in offering an electronic payment option. He said the online donations will go toward outstanding maintenance. Illinois has gone years without a capital budget for infrastructure improvements.

In a resignation letter, Flynn said he held numerous calls with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during the transition and gave “incomplete information” about those discussions to Pence. “I’m not sure anything went wrong,” Bill Croyle said. “This was a new, never-having-happened-before event.”

Croyle and the local sheriff sought to reassure the public that downstream communities were safe until water began spilling over the lake’s edge Sunday and a chocolate-colored torrent of water began chewing through the slope below it.

The state’s Department of Water Resources had said conditions were stable at noon and then tweeted an evacuation warning at 4:45 p.m. of a possible failure within the hour, saying “this is not a drill.”

Chaos ensued as anxious residents rushed to pack up their families and abandon several communities in Butte, Yuba and Sutter Counties. The area in the northern Central Valley is known mainly for agriculture, which is fed by dammed-up rivers that spill down from the Sierra Nevada foothills nearby.

It took some people seven hours to travel to evacuation centers that should have been an hour away, said Chico Councilman Andrew Coolidge, who visited with evacuees in packed shelters in his city.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea insisted the evacuation had been accomplished in a “fairly timely fashion” and a “fairly orderly manner.”

Security Council condemns North Korea missile test The ASSOCIATED PRESS UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. Security Council strongly condemned North Korea late Monday over its latest ballistic missile launches and warned of “further significant measures” if Pyongyang doesn’t stop nuclear and missile testing.

A council statement agreed to by all 15 members followed strong condemnation by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of the latest launch and U.S. President Donald Trump’s pledge to deal with North Korea “very strongly.”

The Security Council condemned Saturday’s launch and a previous test Oct. 19, saying North Korea’s activities to develop its nuclear weapons delivery systems violate U.N. sanctions and increase tensions. It called on all U.N.

members “to redouble their efforts” to implement U.N. sanctions.

North Korea has repeatedly flouted six Security Council resolutions demanding an end to its nuclear and ballistic missile activities and imposing increasing tougher sanctions.

The latest missile test is seen as an implicit challenge to Trump, who has vowed a tough line on North Korea but has yet to release a strategy for dealing with a country whose nuclear ambitions have bedeviled U.S. leaders for decades.

“North Korea is a big, big problem and we will deal with that very strongly,” Trump said at a joint news conference Monday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Nikki Haley, his U.N. ambassador, said in a statement later: “We call on all members of the Security Council to

use every available resource to make it clear to the North Korean regime – and its enablers – that these launches are unacceptable.”

The council statement issued Monday was almost exactly the same as the one adopted Oct. 17 – a practice that makes it much easier for members to reach quick agreement.

Guterres called the latest launch “a further troubling violation” of council resolutions and urged North Korea to comply with its international obligations, U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said.

“The secretary-general appeals to the international community to continue to address this situation in a united manner,” Haq said.

WASHINGTON – A political odd couple, President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resolutely played up their similarities at their first meeting Monday, even as obvious differences lurked behind their public smiles.

After their White House meeting, the North American neighbors emerged to hail their close ties, with Trump promising to “build upon our very historic friendship” and Trudeau noting the “special” bond between the countries.

But it was hard to escape their contrasting worldviews.

Speaking to reporters, Trump defended his restrictive refugee and immigration orders, saying that “we cannot let the wrong people in.” Trudeau, on the other hand, said Canada continues to “pursue our policies of openness.”

Trudeau later acknowledged that there are times when the two countries differ. But he said, “The last thing Canadians expect is for me to come down and lecture another country on how they chose to govern themselves.”

During their post-meeting news conference, the reporters Trump called on did not ask about two pressing issues of the day – the future of embattled National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and North Korea’s reported ballistic missile launch.

Trump already has been good for Canada, as he has said he’ll expedite approval of the Keystone XL pipeline.

The pipeline from Alberta through America’s midsection would carry more than one-fifth of the oil Canada exports to the U.S. Former President Barack Obama turned down the pipeline, a major blow Canada’s oil industry.

Canada has the third-largest known oil reserves in the world and needs infrastructure to export its growing oil sands production. The country is America’s largest supplier of foreign oil.

Dems shouldn’t oppose Gorsuch Democrats are picking the wrong guy – the wrong target – if they choose to go all out in opposition to Judge Neil Gorsuch – the president’s pick for an opening on the Supreme Court of the United States.

The Dems would be both smart and classy if they backed Gorsuch instead.

First, there is the politics of the matter: President Donald Trump picked a serious person, not an ideologue or a hack.

Gorsuch makes an excellent impression and is likely to make an even better one in confirmation hearings.

Five Democratic senators already have indicated they are inclined to at least give Gorsuch a vote. That’s closing in on 60 votes.

The Democrats will lose this fight.

Then there is substance.

The Democrats should lose this fight. Gorsuch is qualified, indeed, according to many who have studied his work closely, highly qualified. They say he is brilliant; a giant of legal reasoning.

Gorsuch is one of Trump’s best picks.

Meanwhile, the president has nominated dubious, marginally qualified people to head the Labor and Energy departments. Those nominations would be more reasonable targets, politically and substantively.

Of course, Democrats feel they have a right to block Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court. Senate Republicans, in a shameless display of crass power and partisanship, declared they would not consider any person President Barack Obama nominated to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, after his untimely death a year ago.

In March, Obama put forward Judge Merrick Garland, a moderate jurist with a reputation for careful reasoning, and Republicans refused to even hold hearings, forget a vote on the floor of the Senate.

They ran out the clock – until Election Day. That was an abuse of power, and Democrats are, understandably, itching for retribution.

Garland was wronged. There is no question about it.

But retribution gets us nowhere. We can’t have government by payback – one party abusing nominees and the system and then the other.

Gorsuch is the wrong man to target.

He will not be stopped and should not be.

Democrats will only be trivializing themselves by trying.

Radical tax reform could be dangerous President Donald Trump and his allies in Congress have big plans for tax reform, and there’s something to be said for ambition.

But the way they’re promoting their ideas suggests they don’t quite understand their consequences – and that raises larger questions about whether the plan could work at all.

House Republicans long have proposed cutting the corporate tax rate from the current 35 percent to 20 percent. But with Trump, they’ve added a twist: the so-called border adjustment.

Under the current corporate tax system – gross oversimplification alert – firms tally their revenues, deduct their costs, and pay a tax on the difference. With a border adjustment, all this changes. Firms wouldn’t be able to count revenue from exports, nor would they be able to deduct the cost of imports. This would make the corporate tax work something like a value-added tax, which most other countries rely on for a substantial share of their revenues. In effect, the change would turn the U.S. corporate tax into a tax on domestic consumption.

The plan is not without appeal.

Because multinational firms would pay taxes on domestic revenue no matter what, they

would have no incentive (as they do now) to shift profits to overseas subsidiaries in low-tax jurisdictions. And because it would end the deductibility of imports – and the U.S. imports more than it exports – the plan would raise additional revenue, as much as $100 billion a year.

Isn’t this barely disguised protectionism? Not really. True, the new tax would force up the price of imports in much the same way as a tariff, but in due course the dollar would appreciate. That would make imports cheaper and exports dearer, in the end leaving prices to consumers as before. Even after this adjustment had happened, the U.S. would retain the fiscal benefits: extra revenue (which would allow other taxes to be cut), and no more profit-shifting.

The problem is what happens next. How would the administration respond to the substantial strengthening of the dollar that the reform would induce – and in fact would have to induce to work well?

Presumably, the administration would denounce this as “currency manipulation” on the part of U.S. trading partners, and see it as providing grounds for an outright protectionist response.

There are other drawbacks. In

principle, border adjustment on corporate taxes should be no more objectionable to advocates of liberal trade than border adjustment under a valued-added tax.

The World Trade Organization’s current rules, however, take a different view, and the Republicans’ plan would likely give rise to legal objections and possible retaliation.

That’s not all. Although a stronger dollar would boost U.S. real incomes, some groups would lose. For instance, a stronger dollar would cause a big shift of wealth from U.S. holders of foreign assets to foreign holders of U.S. assets. Some countries with heavy dollar-denominated debts might struggle to meet their obligations, and the resulting financial strain could easily rebound on the U.S. No question, the U.S. corporate tax needs reform. The current rate is far too high and the incentive to park earnings abroad much too strong. A broader, simpler base with lower rates would be a big step forward all by itself, and a relatively easy undertaking.

Radical reform, guided by policy makers who don’t always seem to know what they’re doing, is too much of a gamble.

To the editor: I was wondering ... McHenry County is one of the highest taxed counties in the whole United States.

You are a board member, whether it be county board, school board, conservation district board or whatever. You just voted to increase the levy, and you know taxes will go up.

You will be taking more money out of people’s pockets.

How do you convince yourself when looking at yourself in a mirror that what you’re doing is right? Justifying to your wife it is for the good of the community? Explaining to your children that when they grow up they most likely won’t be able to afford to live here?

And to Mom and Dad as they pack to move out of state because they no longer can afford to stay in the house where you were raised, what do you say?

Poor decision-making

To the editor: Recently, the board has made some poor decisions: Not voting to cap runaway property taxes. Claiming they are not up to speed on using an iPad to vote is interesting; it’s been in the works for more than a year.

They were smart enough to cancel the pension inquiry that they were not entitled to by voting to eliminate it. They’re part-timers not working 20 hours a week and were smart enough to realize they were going to get caught.

And politicians count on it.

For example, former Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon tried to get elected to the state Senate last year. She, of course, is the daughter of Paul Simon, who served the U.S. Senate and was a beloved Illinois political figure.

So, this was the top headline on her campaign website during her latest run: “Like father, like daughter: Comparing Sheila and Paul Simon.”

Ugh.

She was running for office – not her dad.

Voters must not have been too impressed either. They chose Republican [www.bnd.com/news/ politics-government/election/article109450157.html] Paul Schimpf, who had never held political office before, over the daughter of a former U.S. senator.

Many folks are figuring it’s the political establishment who got us in this mess in the first place, why vote for someone with an all too familiar name?

After all, when choosing our leaders, we ought to ask more than: “Who’s your daddy?”

SPRINGFIELD – What is it about Illinois Democrats and political dynasties?

I’ve never quite understood it.

But for whatever reason the Illinois Democratic Party seems strangely drawn not just to individuals but to whole families.

Think about it: the Madigans, the Daleys, the Stevensons, the Simons, the Hynes, the Jacksons and the Cullertons.

And, of course, the Republicans are in no way immune to dynasties.

Look no further than the Bush family on a national level.

But when you get down to the state level in the Land of Lincoln, the Democrats seem to have a leg up on making politics a family affair.

And now, with Chris Kennedy announcing his candidacy for Illinois governor, it looks like they are on the way to importing a dynasty from elsewhere. (Chris is the son of

Sears, Kmart remove Trump products online Other companies tread lightly stocking brand

NEW YORK – Sears and Kmart have evicted “a very small number” of Trump-branded items from their online stores, but won’t specify how many and emphasize that hundreds of products still are available through their third-party online marketplaces.

It’s another sign of how companies are trying to tread a careful line, after President Donald Trump rebuked Nordstrom publicly on his Twitter account for deciding to stop selling his daughter Ivanka Trump’s clothing and accessories line.

He said Nordstrom had treated his daughter “so unfairly.” Ethics experts saw the comment as a threat to companies that carry the brand and may be weighing the question of whether to keep doing so.

Nordstrom had said in its announcement that the move was based on the brand’s falling sales in the past year, particularly in the past six months.

A social media campaign called “Grab Your Wallet” has urged a boycott of stores that stock Ivanka Trump or Donald Trump products, which also include Amazon and Dillard’s.

Other companies that have been scaling back or dropping Trump merchandise are hoping to avoid a back-

Belk Inc. said it will no longer carry Ivanka Trump items on its website, and QVC has said it no longer sells the merchandise.

Macy’s Inc., which carries the Ivanka Trump brand, hasn’t responded to multiple queries by The Associated

Press. And Lord & Taylor has only said it currently carries the brand.

This tiptoeing is in response to politically active shoppers who are using their purchasing power to punish retailers or reward them based on their political beliefs, a trend that has become more high-profile with Donald Trump’s presidency.

Sears Holdings Inc.’s announcement Monday followed weekend re-

ports that it had dropped 31 Trump products from its website.

The company did not respond to queries then and referred questions for specifics back to its prepared statement.

“We, like all retailers, constantly add and remove products from our offerings,” Sears spokesman Chris Brathwaite said on the company’s blog.

“In this case, certain products were removed from our websites that included a very small number of Trump products.

“But any fair observer who searches for Trump or Ivanka Trump on Sears. com would find hundreds of products available for purchase.”

Sears can ill-afford to alienate customers.

The faltering retail chain said last week it may sell more locations, cut more jobs and put more of its famous brands on the block.

The Hoffman Estates-based retailer has been losing money for years and has received millions from its hedge fund-founder CEO to keep it afloat.

Brathwaite said the company monitors products, adding items that are in demand and removing products with declining demand.

The Ivanka Trump brand has said it saw sales growth of 21 percent in 2016 from the previous year as it expanded its categories, distribution and offerings. “In recent days, we’ve seen our brand swept into the political fray, becoming collateral damage in others’ efforts to advance agendas unrelated to what we do,” the company said.

NEW YORK – Princess Diana will be the subject of a fourhour documentary miniseries airing on ABC this August.

A joint project of ABC and People magazine, the program, to be telecast over two nights, will include what the producers say will be in-depth conversations with those who knew her best as well as archival footage of the Princess of Wales.

The program will “remind the world why they fell in love with Diana in the first place,” according to Monday’s announcement.

The program will mark the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death at age 36 in a car crash Aug. 31, 1997, in Paris.

Frothy musical “La La Land” took five prizes including best picture, but major awards also went to tough welfare-state drama “I, Daniel Blake” and fractured-family stories “Lion” and “Manchester by the Sea.” In keeping with an awards season that has coincided with a wrenching change of government in the U.S., even “La La Land’s” prizes came with a political tinge.

Accepting the best-actress trophy for playing a barista who dreams of Hollywood stardom, Emma Stone said that “this country and the U.S., and the world seems to be going through a bit of a time.”

She said that in a divided world, it was vital to celebrate “the positive gift of creativity and how it can transcend borders and how it help people to feel a little less alone.”

The U.K. awards, known as BAFTAs, are often seen as an indicator of who will win at Hollywood’s Academy Awards, held two weeks later. “La La Land” already is a dominant force at the Oscars, with 14 nominations. It also has won seven Golden Globes.

“La La Land” had 11 nominations for the British awards and won prizes for Stone, director Damien Chazelle, music and cinematography, as well as best picture.

But while the luscious musical was an academy favorite, voters also rewarded less escapist fare.

Stone’s co-star, Ryan Gosling, lost out on the best-actor prize to Casey Affleck, who played a grieving handyman in “Manchester by the Sea.”

NEW YORK – Jake Tapper is working on a book that you could call fake news: It’s his debut novel.

The CNN anchor and chief Washington correspondent has a thriller scheduled to come out in the summer of 2018, Little, Brown and Company told The Associated Press on Monday.

The novel is called “The Hellfire Club” and it takes place in a world that well predates the Trump administration – Washington, D.C., in 1954.

The story centers on Rep. Charles Marder, a young congressman from New York, and his zoologist wife, Margaret.

“Amid the swirl of glamorous and powerful political leaders and deal makers, a mysterious fatal car accident thrusts Charlie and Margaret into an underworld of secret deals, secret societies, and a plot that could change the course of history,” according to Little, Brown.

Tapper said in a statement that “The Hellfire Club” would feature such historical figures as President Dwight Eisenhower, Sen. Joe McCarthy and then-Vice President Richard Nixon.

“Being able to combine Washington intrigue with this fascinating time period and the larger-than-life characters who come with it – the Kennedys, McCarthy, Nixon, Ike – has been a thrill,” he said.

Indiana arts group plans to preserve Jackson 5 mural

GARY, Ind. – An Indiana group plans to preserve a mural depicting the Jackson 5 in Gary’s Miller Beach neighborhood.

The Times reported that Felix “Flex” Maldanado painted the mural of the pop stars and Gary natives two years ago at the Lake Effekt graffiti expo.

The mural is on a billboard in front of a burned-down building and its paint is fading. Meg Roman of Miller Beach Arts and Creative District said her group plans to preserve the popular landmark. The original artist will touch up the work.

The arts group sponsors the graffiti expo, a daylong fair where spectators can watch artists create their work. The graffiti expo is planned for June 17.

NEW YORK – Derek Jeter’s wife, Hannah, said they are expecting their first child together – a girl.

The Sports Illustrated swimsuit star made the announcement Monday in an essay on her husband’s Player’s Tribune website. Lawmakers look to speed up safety Senators launch effort to bump up deployment of self-driving cars

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – In the first major congressional attempt to address the advent of self-driving cars, two senators said Monday that they’re launching a bipartisan effort to help to speed up the deployment of the vehicles on the nation’s roads.

Republican John Thune of South Dakota, the chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, and Democrat Gary Peters of Michigan, said they’re exploring legislation that “clears hurdles and advances innovation in self-driving vehicle technology.”

The senators’ counterparts in the House also are gearing up to address the new technology, with a hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

Automakers cite federal requirements that all vehicles must have steering wheels and brake pedals as examples of regulations that presume there will be a human driver and might inhibit the introduction of self-driving cars. Congressional action may be needed to make changes.

“Without changes to those regulations, it may be years before the promise of today’s technology can be realized and thousands of preventable deaths that could have been avoided will happen,” Michael Ableson, General Motors’ vice president of global strategy, plans to tell the House Energy and Commerce Committee, according to prepared testimony.

Proponents of self-driving cars say they hold the potential to dramatically reduce traffic deaths by eliminating human error, which the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says is a factor in 94 percent of all fatal crashes. More than 35,000 people were killed on the nation’s roads in 2015, up over 7 percent from the previous year. Traffic deaths surged an additional 8 percent in the first nine months of last year.

Automakers also complain that states are moving ahead with their own regulations, creating the potential for a confusing “patchwork” of laws.

Safety advocates have urged the government to set standards that specifically address the safety of self-driving cars.

The Obama administration last year issued a voluntary set of safety goals for makers of self-driving cars to meet with the understanding that enforceable regulations could follow.

The Trump administration hasn’t yet indicated

what approach it will take to the technology.

Some people may first experience riding in a self-driving car by hailing an on-demand, ride-sharing service such as Uber or Lyft. Uber began offering passengers rides in autonomous cars with a human as a backup driver last year in Pittsburgh.

Joseph Okpaku, Lyft’s vice president of government relations, says in prepared testimony for the House hearing that the company’s goal is “to operate a pilot in a major city this year that will permit consumers to enjoy, for the first time, a Lyft in an autonomous vehicle.”

Verizon gets pulled back into unlimited data game

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Verizon, in a major reversal, has joined other carriers in offering an unlimited data plan.

As recently as January, Verizon’s chief financial officer said unlimited plans were “not something we feel the need to do” even though rivals had made inroads against Verizon by offering them. Verizon stopped offering such plans to new customers in 2012 and has been trying to push longtime customers off those old plans through rate hikes.

The arrival of the iPhone and other smartphones made unlimited plans more of a rarity as carriers saw opportunities to make money by charging customers based on how much data they use.

But Sprint and T-Mobile recognized in unlimited data an opportunity to snare customers from heavyweights Verizon and AT&T. Because carriers must poach each other’s customers to grow, the competition has intensified.

AT&T also started offering unlimited plans after discontinuing them, but they are available only to customers who also subscribe to DirecTV, which AT&T

owns. Its prices are similar to Verizon’s for a family; Verizon is cheaper for an individual.

Verizon’s new unlimited plan replaces several higher-data plans and starts at $80 for one person, not counting fees and taxes. (Existing customers can keep their plans.)

For a family of four, unlimited costs $180 at Verizon. To compare, Sprint just launched a new promotion for new customers that costs $90 a month for four lines, and T-Mobile, which includes taxes and fees in its total price, is $160.

AT&T costs $180 for four but also re-

quires a TV subscription.

Verizon is trying to differentiate itself by letting customers watch high-definition video with the unlimited plan, while competitors run streaming video at DVD-level quality.

T-Mobile responded Monday by saying that it would include HD video as well starting on Friday. Before, customers had to pay extra for HD streaming.

T-Mobile also said that, like Verizon, it would offer 10 gigabytes of high-speed data for a mobile hotspot, so that people can connect on laptops or tablets on the go.

SAN FRANCISCO – Ford Motor is spending $1 billion to take over a budding robotics startup to acquire more expertise needed to reach its ambitious goal of having a fully driverless vehicle on the road by 2021.

The big bet announced Friday comes just a few months after the Pittsburgh startup, Argo AI, was created by two alumni of Carnegie Mellon University’s robotics program, Bryan Salesky and Peter Rander.

The alliance between Argo and Ford is the latest to combine the spunk and dexterity of a technologically savvy startup with the financial muscle and manufacturing knowhow of a major automaker in the race to develop autonomous vehicles. Last year rival General Motors paid $581 million to buy Cruise Automation, a 40-person software company that is testing vehicles in San Francisco.

The Argo deal marks the next step in Ford’s journey toward building a vehicle without a steering wheel or brake pedal by 2021 – a vision that CEO Mark Fields laid out last summer.

The decision to turn to Argo for help is a tacit acknowledgement that Ford needed more talent to deliver on Fields’ 2021 promise, one expert familiar with Salesky and Rander said.

“This is likely a realization that Ford is behind relative to companies like GM, Audi, Volvo, Waymo and Uber, and is trying to catch up,” said Raj Rajkumar, a Carnegie Mellon computer engineering professor who leads the school’s autonomous vehicle research.

Salesky said Argo expects to have 200 workers by the end of the year. Argo employees will be given stock in the subsidiary as part of their compensation packages so they will be enriched if Argo’s technology becomes a hot commodity.

The equity should set Argo apart from other companies in recruiting scarce tech workers. “There’s a war for talent out there,” Fields said.

By joining with Ford, Argo gets strong capital backing and expertise on other components needed to run autonomous cars, as well as product development and manufacturing knowledge, Salesky said.

In return for its funding, Argo will design its driverless system exclusively for Ford and then have a chance to license the technology to other automakers in the future.

Spend less time in front of screen Dear Doctor: Our neighbor’s kids, who don’t have access to computers, video games or other technology, spend a lot of time playing together outdoors. How can we wean our own kids from their screens without causing a family rebellion?

Dear Reader: You’re facing a real challenge that has crept up on parents in the last decade or so. Once the argument was simply about getting kids to turn off the TV. Today, though, an array of devices effortlessly capture our children’s – and let’s be honest, our own – time and attention.

When the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a study about screen time six years ago, the results were eye-opening.

Its research showed children between the ages of 8 and 18 spend more than 7½ hours each day in front of screens of one kind or another. And that didn’t include the use of a computer for homework.

Why is this a problem? Children who spend that much time immobilized in front of a screen, whether it’s the TV, a computer, smartphone or video game console, are at significantly greater risk of obesity. There is evidence kids who play a lot of video games are more likely to display aggressive behavior. Sleep problems due to sustained screen use are common. And a preference for the immersive world of a tech device over the companionship of siblings or friends can lead to antisocial behavior.

So how do you win the battle for your kids’ attention? The biggest challenge may be that, first, you need to set a good example. How many times have you driven by a playground and seen parents completely absorbed in their smartphones? If the tug of the screen is difficult for an adult to resist, imagine its effect on young and malleable minds.

Begin by setting strict guidelines for yourself and (here’s the hard part) following them. Once you’ve got your own screen time

• For best results, start with a family discussion. Tell your children what you’re doing and why. Explain that they will sleep better, have more energy and will have time for other activities.

Against two diamonds, Sharon Osberg (West) led the heart queen.

Gates overtook with his king, cashed the heart ace and continued with the heart jack. After West discarded a discouraging spade four, what should East have done next?

Gu Ling (North for the Chinese Contract Bridge Association) would have done best to overcall one notrump. After losing five heart tricks, she could have taken the rest, aided by the club finesse. When she made a takeout double, Gates did well not to rebid two clubs. If he had, South would have passed, and West probably would have rebid two hearts.

That contract would surely have gone down one.

When East passed, Lin Rongqiang (South) advanced with two diamonds.

After three rounds of hearts, East shifted to the diamond three. Declarer took West’s queen with dummy’s ace, played a spade to his king and ran the diamond nine. East took his two trump tricks and exited with a heart, which squeezed West. When she discarded a spade, South had four spades, two diamonds and two clubs.

The killing defense at trick four was East’s singleton spade. The curious may work it out -- my word limit has been reached.

McHENRY – Crystal Lake Central’s Cori Hamill made a wild, running hook with her right hand with 18.8 seconds remaining in Monday’s Class 4A McHenry Regional girls basketball first-round game against Prairie Ridge, turning a once 10-point deficit into three.

Before and during the game, Wolves coach Rick Lima warned his team that the Tigers wouldn’t back down with their season also on the line.

“I know they don’t have a lot of wins under their belt, but they’re competitive and they make you work,” Lima said.

“They’re relentless; they just keep after it. They cause us a lot of problems.”

Hamill’s runner in the lane would be the last points scored by Central, as the Wolves hit 2 of 4 free throws down the stretch and held on for a 37-32 victory, the team’s third win over Central this season.

Prairie Ridge (10-17), a No. 9 seed, advances to play No. 2-seeded DundeeCrown in a regional semifinal at 6 p.m.

Tuesday. D-C rallied to win its final eight games of the regular season to earn a share of the Fox Valley Conference title.

Junior Emily Perhats led the Wolves with 12 points, sophomore Karly Statter added 10, and sophomore point guard Nicole Dorn had nine points, eight rebounds and two assists.

“I was so nervous, super nervous.

But our team held on tight,” said Statter, who injured her right knee early in the game but stayed in. “[Central] had a great game, a great run. I’m just glad we could keep it together.

“We realized that this is our last chance, and we really needed to seal the deal. I’m really proud of our team.”

The Tigers switched to a ball press in the second half, limiting Prairie Ridge to 13 points over the final 16 minutes. But the Wolves played equally strong defensively, holding Central to 13 points in the second half.

Central (5-21) turned the ball over 32 times, while Prairie Ridge finished with 26 turnovers.

Free throws really hurt Central, which made 9 of 24 freebies.

“I told them, just from experience, the first game is really difficult,” Lima said of the postseason. “You’re nervous, everybody wants to move on, and it’s going to be a tough environment. You have seniors that don’t want their careers to end; they’re going to battle all the way to the end.”

The 5-foot-3 Durben knocked down four 3-pointers, including one that gave the Golden Eagles an early lead in overtime.

“We just kept believing,” Durben said. “We knew that we could come back. We put in [too] much work in practice to just have the season end like that. We were going to do everything we could to try and win this game.”

“I honestly felt really good about where we were at heading into overtime,” Jacobs coach Joe Benoit added.

“These girls just left every single thing they had on the court tonight, and the result just didn’t end in our favor. I can’t even begin to express how proud I am of the effort tonight in an amazing atmosphere and great high school basketball game.”

At the end, Larkin senior and Arizona recruit Marlee Kyles, whose gamehigh 30 points (seven in overtime) put her over the 2,000-point mark for her career, and Brianna Young (22 points) were just too much for Jacobs.

Jacobs seniors Carly Sidor (12 points) and Maggie Grady (11) also reached double figures for the Golden Eagles, who knocked down 10 3-pointers as a team in the season-ending loss to Larkin (14-14).

ELGIN – When the Jacobs girls basketball team has broken any huddle this season, the word it repeats is “believe.”

Trailing from nearly start to finish of Monday’s Class 4A Larkin Regional quarterfinal to host Larkin, there was always a belief that there was a way back.

Kerri Healy’s 3-pointer just before the buzzer sent the game to overtime, but the comeback win was not meant to be as Jacobs’ season ended in a 70-65 loss to the Royals.

After missing its first 12 field-goal attempts, and not scoring a point until the 3:03 mark of the first quarter, Jacobs (12-15) was battling back from a deficit from Larkin’s opening offensive possession.

After a play originally drawn up for senior Nicole Durben did not play out as planned, senior Grace O’Malley kicked the ball out to Healy, who banked and rattled in a deep ball to send the game into overtime.

“I kind of didn’t even look. I just shot it,” said Healy, who joined Durben with 16 points as Jacobs’ leading scorers. “I think the possibility that tonight could be our last game together really pushed

Montgomery vies for starting role Cubs in Mesa

MESA, Ariz. – Madison Bumgarner, Jack Morris, Bob Gibson, Rollie Fingers and Mike Montgomery.

It’s obvious what they all have in common, right?

They’re among the 15 pitchers in the past 50 years to throw the final pitch in a Game 7 to clinch a World Series championship.

“It’s only two pitches, but I’ve watched it a few times,” said Montgomery, who can be seen in the middle of the instant-classic Cubs’ celebration photo from that Nov. 2 victory in Cleveland “It was just incredible,” he said, “even now to see pictures, me just with my arm raised in the middle of the whole pile, it’s like, ‘Man, this really just happened.’ It just goes to show you, you never know, because I wouldn’t have imagined winning a World Series this time last year, let alone being kind of in the middle of it there at the end.”

Last spring, Montgomery was with the Mariners, trying to make a roster after a 16-start big-league debut the year before.

By season’s end, the left-hander was in the Cubs’ revamped bullpen.

And this spring he’s in what might be the most significant position battle for the defending World Series champs.

Who replaces Dexter Fowler as the leadoff man might be the sexiest question entering camp, but there’s little suspense surrounding which position players will get playing time or whether the lineup will be able to score runs.

The pitching? If there’s any suspense, that’s where you’ll find it.

Montgomery and recently signed lefty Brett Anderson are the top candidates for Jason Hammel’s vacated rotation spot – both of whom could be especially significant for an otherwise loaded team still crossing its fingers over starting pitching depth.

“I think I can play a big part [of the repeat effort],” Montgomery said Monday after a workout the day before pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to camp (first formal workouts are Wednesday).

“I’ve always been a starter, and I think last year was a situation where the need was in the bullpen, both with Seattle and with the Cubs early on,” he said. “Then I filled the role of being a starter for short periods of time, so I’ve talked to them about [that versatility].”

Montgomery, 27, made five starts for the Cubs last summer, recording a 3.33 ERA without a save. Team officials have talked about him prominently in their starting rotation plans throughout the winter.

“I don’t know if it’s [my job] to lose,” he said. “I look at it as it’s going to be competition. There’s a lot of good pitchers here. Every camp I’ve ever been in, you’re always competing with somebody.

And I enjoy that. It’s a challenge. But I think that’s how it should be, because it gets the best out of players.”

When Anderson, a veteran, career starter, was signed two weeks ago for $3.5 million, Montgomery’s starting status might have taken a hit, assuming good health for Anderson and the four returning rotation guys.

But Montgomery shrugs off that possibility and looks more at the big picture

– the one he hopes will look a lot like that instant-classic celebration photo in about 8½ months.

“He can definitely help us,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery talked more about the newfound knowledge of how to win a championship.

“Hard work. You’ve just got to be persistent, really,” he said. “That’s the mindset I feel like a lot of us need to keep, because you don’t want to get complacent.

I mean, yeah, it’s great to win a World Series, but this is a new year, a new challenge. Last year’s great, but that’s last year. It’s a new year.”

When: Pitchers and catchers report Tuesday. First workouts are scheduled for Wednesday. Spring opener is Feb. 25 (two split-squad games).

Question of camp: After two years of “You go, we go” production from Dexter Fowler, manager Joe Maddon is looking for another leadoff hitter among several imperfect candidates, including Kyle Schwarber.

Biggest position battle: With few overall roster questions, the most important job competition is at the back end of the rotation, where lefties Brett Anderson and Mike Montgomery will vie to claim Jason Hammel’s vacated spot.

Keep your eye on: Jason Heyward’s swing. The big-bucks outfielder won another Gold Glove in 2016, but he struggled through the worst hitting season of his career in his first season with the Cubs. The result of a winter’s worth of work to reconstruct his swing will be unveiled this month.

Did you know? Lefthander David Rollins has been put on waivers six times by teams since the end of last season. Twice the Cubs claimed him, and twice they subsequently put him on waivers. This week he cleared for the first time.

Renteria: ‘They have a job to do’

They still have a job to do. They have to come here and prepare to get ready for the upcoming season.”

That is what pitchers and catchers will begin doing in earnest Tuesday, taking physicals starting at 6 a.m. before taking the field for their first organized work. The Sox are in rebuild mode, and it seems only a matter of when, not if, some of their most valuable assets will move on.

“If there are any obstacles or annoyances that occur, we will do the best we can to kind of minimize those,” Rent-

eria said. “For the most part, they are professionals. They know what they have to do. Their day-to-day operations are what they have to do to prepare for the upcoming season, so I think we will try to focus on that.”

This is Renteria’s first year back in charge after managing the Cubs for two seasons, sitting one out and serving as 2016 manager Robin Ventura’s bench coach. GLENDALE, Ariz. – First-year White Sox manager Rick Renteria will be a “tough love” kind of leader.

On the outside, his gentle, upbeat demeanor says “nice guy.”

Behind that lies a no-nonsense longtime baseball guy who wants things done his way. He wants the game played a certain way under his watch, and the task of making that happen begins this week with veterans and prospects alike.

“There are going to be times where my guys don’t like me very much, and that’s OK; there are going to be times when I don’t like them very much,” Renteria said Monday. “But I’m always going to love them.”

As most parents can relate to.

“A priest told me, ‘Kids aren’t always going to love your parents, and parents are not always going to love your kids.’ But it’s the same thing, same approach.”

Renteria comes back to managing with a second chance after unceremoniously getting let go by the Cubs, while still under contract, when Joe Maddon was hired.

“The first time around, I think it went fast for him,” a veteran scout said. “They asked him to baby-sit those kids instead of being a manager and he got clipped. But he knew what he was doing, and, hopefully, he’s seen things and it has slowed down for him a little

bit. And the American League game doesn’t come at you as fast. He may have a shot at it.”

“Every year you learn something new,” Renteria said.

“The reality is, I have a line that I have to toe in leading these guys in a particular direction. So that is on me now, that is my law.”

Early birds: Charlie Tilson and Matt Davidson were among the early position player arrivals. Tilson, who suffered a season-ending hamstring injury his first day in uniform after arriving from the Cardinals for Zach Duke last season, stands a good chance to be the Opening Day center fielder.

Tilson is ranked as the Sox’s No. 11 prospect by MLB.com.

Third baseman Todd Frazier is expected to arrive soon. The first full squad workout is Saturday.

Playing for pay: Melky Cabrera ($15 million) is earning the Sox’s highest salary in 2017. James Shields at $21 million is the highest-paid Sox, although the Padres are paying $11 million of that. GLENDALE, Ariz. – There will be no getting around swirling trade rumors when White Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training Tuesday.

Left-hander Jose Quintana has been a hot topic ever since the Sox dealt Chris Sale and Adam Eaton. David Robertson also has value as a proven closer and set-up man and is at or near the contending Washington Nationals’ priority list. Some believe Robertson could go this week, if the two sides come to an agreement on prospects going to the Sox in return and the amount of salary the Nationals are willing to pay. Robertson has $11 million and $12 million on the last two years of his four-year deal, and the Sox historically are not big on eating contract dollars.

“Obviously, it’s something that is swirling, but for the most part, we all know that they come to the ballpark preparing for the upcoming season,” manager Rick Renteria said Monday.

“It would be foolish for me to say they probably don’t have it in the back of their mind. It’s probably there, but it shouldn’t be something that encompasses their every waking moment.

When Robertson signed for $46 million over four years in December 2014, the Sox also signed Melky Cabrera to a three-year, $42 million deal and traded Marcus Semien and three other prospects to the Athletics for one year of Jeff Samardzija. The built-to-win buzz in camp that year lost momentum in the first weeks of the season.

Patchwork signings, big and small, haven’t worked for an organization with a weak farm system, prompting general manager Rick Hahn and Co. to begin the rebuild phase. Already, the Sox have five top 100 prospects in their systems with more trades to come.

And likely more losses, although the players who are here no doubt will say in the coming days that they expect to win.

“Everyone is going to have high expectations for themselves in that clubhouse,” Renteria said. “It’s not going to change for me. Most people will say if you lay high expectations and they don’t rise to the occasion, you’re setting them up for defeat. I don’t agree with that. I think you set high expectations, you allow them to go through the process and you figure out what we failed at in order to get the job done.

That’s a part of learning how to win also.”

3-point wins could lead to late-game thrills

mlazerus@suntimes.com There’s a moment in nearly every third period of every close game, usually about halfway through but sometimes even earlier, when frantic suddenly becomes tedious, when aggression yields to passivity, when high-octane becomes low-key.

Breakouts are slower. Defense is tighter. Point-men stop pinching.

High-skill forwards make only lowrisk passes. Both teams are playing for overtime, and it’s a strategy that renders too many third periods dull when they should be dramatic.

“Maybe not early in the third, but definitely as the game wears on and you get in the last 10 minutes of the third, it’s impossible not to think that, ‘Hey, we’ll take the point and take our chances in overtime,’” San Jose Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. “I think everybody does that.”

The so-called “loser point” – the standings point given to teams that lose in overtime or shootouts, has created unprecedented parity in the league. Barely two weeks before the March 1 trade deadline, all 16 Eastern Conference teams are either in a playoff spot or within seven points of one.

And 12 of the 14 Western Conference teams were in, or within six points.

It’s created such a logjam in the standings that general managers can’t even make trades, because of the 30 teams in the NHL, only the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche are truly sellers at this point.

Every point is so valuable, that in a close game, few teams are willing to risk getting none in order to chase two in regulation. That’s especially true in interconference games, when the opponent picking up a point doesn’t do any Joel Quenneville harm.

Even Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, whose goto catch-phrase is, “Nobody likes winning more than me,” does it. He doesn’t call it “playing for overtime,” but calls it “being smart.” He insisted the Hawks don’t change their style of play based on period or conference alignment, but the cautious third-period performances speak for themselves.

“With our team, sometimes you find yourself in those last 10 to 15 minutes of games in the third period, you’re tied or you’re down a goal or you’re up a goal, I think you want to make sure you’re getting one point in those games, right?” Hawks winger

Patrick Kane said. “Then see what happens in overtime. We have some guys that can perform well in overtime or a shootout, whatever it may be.”

The solution – one that has been bandied about in hockey circles for years – is to go to the international point system, which gives out three points for a regulation win, two for an overtime or shootout win, one for an overtime or shootout loss, and none for a regulation loss. The idea is to incentivize winning in regulation – to make it worthwhile to play a more entertaining, riskier brand of hockey in the third period.

In a three-point system, the Hawks would be 11 points behind the Wild (111 to 100), with Nashville 14 points behind the Hawks and St. Louis one more point out. Teams such as Winnipeg and Dallas (74 points each) would be much farther out of the playoff picture, and the trade market likely would be open for business with more spread-out standings. But Hawks general manager Stan Bowman – who, like most of the younger generation of the NHL, didn’t sound opposed to the idea – wasn’t so sure it would make that much of a difference.

After all, a regulation win over a division opponent would be a six-point swing.

“The other side of it, which nobody really talks about, is if you have three points, you can make up a lot of ground,” Bowman said. “They always talk about how it’s going to separate the teams, but you can make up ground quicker. If you win seven games in a row in regulation, that’s a lot better than seven games in a row in overtime. I think it would give teams a hope that you could get hot.

There would be more separation, but there also would be hope. Right now, it’s just so hard to make up ground on anybody. Because every night, you can win five in a row and really not move up because other teams are getting points when they’re losing.”

As for the effect it would have on NHL history, the record book has long been warped by the elimination of ties, and by expanding the season from 76 to 84 games, then back to 82.

More separation in the standings, more chance for wild swings in playoff races, and more excitement in third periods of close games. It all seems like a no-brainer. But the league has shown little interest in making such a change, because it’s obviously good for business to have so many teams mathematically alive this late in the season, and it’s obviously good for coaches’ job stability to stay in the hunt during a mediocre season.

Being part of Eastern Conference gives Bulls hope

It’s not because his teammates are healthy going into this weekend’s AllStar break. Jimmy Butler (right heel bruise) gutted his way through being a partial participant in the Monday practice, Niko Mirotic (back spasms) sat out, while Dwyane Wade (right wrist) and Paul Zipser (left ankle) were away from the facility getting MRIs. It’s not because the Bulls are coming together at the right time. They finished a six-game road trip losing three straight, including a blow-out loss to former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau at Minnesota.

It’s not even because there’s help on the way. Coach Fred Hoiberg was asked about the trade talk surrounding the Bulls and downplayed any real conversations going on.

“I haven’t talked much about that,’’

Hoiberg said. “All 30 teams are calling each other. I’m sure most of them are lying to each other until those last couple days before the deadline, which is the 23rd.’’

Asked whether he sensed there would be changes, Hoiberg then said, “None that I’m aware of.’’

The Bulls are still a playoff team at 26-29, and that was something Gibson said still can be embraced.

“The thing is we still got a chance to land in a good spot,’’ Gibson said.

“We’re still a playoff team.’’

Maybe one with very little staying power, but Gibson’s hope is that with Wade and Butler, as well as a track record of playing well against the likes of Cleveland and Toronto the past two seasons, if this team can get back to ba-

sics this week, momentum can go a long way.

“Just gotta do the small things, get back to ground zero, figure things out,’’ Gibson said. “Be ready man, nobody is going to feel sorry for you. It’s going to take everybody. Just round up the cattle and be ready to move out again.’’

First, it’s about getting all the cattle back.

That might not be the case by Tuesday, when the Raptors come to town.

Hoiberg, however, said that shouldn’t matter.

“We had four guys out [Sunday], but it gave guys opportunities to play,’’ Hoiberg said. “Those guys have been waiting for those. There’s no excuse.

Those guys are out here practicing.

They’re NBA players. You have to go fight and give yourself a chance. We didn’t do that against Minnesota. These guys are itching for their opportunity.

Now it’s about performing, doing things the right way, building the right habits for a lot of guys who haven’t had a lot of

playing time.

“But that’s what it’s all about, getting your name called and taking advantage of your opportunities.’’

Especially when your name was also called in the first round of draft night, and the Bulls organization hyped that selection up. That means youngsters such as Bobby Portis, Doug McDermott and Denzel Valentine – all recent Bulls first-round selections – need to let the organization know how right or wrong they’ve been lately.

What still isn’t up for debate is the urgency in which this year’s Bulls team needs to start playing with.

After hosting Toronto and Boston this week, when they come out of the break there will be only 25 games left to jockey for playoff position.

“That’s the message to the guys, we’re fully capable of playing good basketball,’’ Hoiberg said.

The good thing about the Eastern Conference is average basketball can be enough.

Brunson leads No. 2 Villanova past last-place DePaul

Sandusky’s son Jeffrey arrested on child sex charges

Sandusky was a stalwart supporter of his father and accompanied his mother, Dottie, to many of his court proceedings.

On Monday, Dottie accompanied Jeffrey Sandusky to his.

Police accused him of soliciting naked photos from a then-16-year-old girl last year and seeking oral sex in 2013 from her then-15-year-old sister.

His defense lawyer, Lance Marshall, declined to comment on the allegations.

Cavs trade ‘Birdman’ Andersen to Hornets, who release him

UConn wins 100th consecutive game

STORRS, Conn. – Add 100 consecutive wins to the UConn Huskies’ long list of milestones.

Given the team’s glitzier numbers linked to national championships, 11 titles and counting, it might seem ho-hum with no added significance. Geno Auriemma’s squad already owns the longest winning streak in Division I college basketball history. UConn beat its own record of 90 consecutive wins earlier this season with little fanfare.

Getting No. 100 was a little tougher than many of the previous 99, which UConn won by an average 38.7 points.

Gabby Williams scored a career-high 26 points and Napheesa Collier added 18 to help the top-ranked Huskies beat No. 6 South Carolina, 66-55, Monday night in front of a sellout crowd of 10,167 that included past greats Sue Bird, Maya Moore, Tina Charles and Breanna Stewart, who helped the Huskies to the first 75 wins of this streak.

“Feels good to carry on the legacy they started,” Collier said. “Hope we are doing them justice.”

The current group of Huskies (25-0) had to work for this win. South Carolina (21-3) used its stellar interior game of A’ja Wilson and Alaina Coates to take a

29-28 advantage late in the first half. The Huskies responded scoring the final seven points before the break. Collier and Williams had all of them, including a

steal and layup by Collier with 3 seconds left that made it 35-29.

“They are opportunistic,” South Carolina coach Dawn Staley said. “They wait for you to make the mistakes and don’t foul a whole lot. ... You have to execute it for 40 minutes, if you don’t they’ll make you pay.”

South Carolina cut its deficit to 40-37 midway through the third quarter, but Williams had consecutive layups to start an 11-2 run to close the period.

“We just tried to stay poised and keep our composure, and just be more confident than the other team,” Williams said.

After the game, fake hundred dollar bills with Auriemma’s face on them dropped from the roof of the arena. The student section spelled out 100.

Auriemma never thought his team would come close to reaching the century mark, let alone break the previous record set by the Huskies from 2008-10.

The Hall of Fame coach set up the most difficult nonconference schedule in the country, playing five of the top eight teams in the AP before Monday, including road games at No. 2 Maryland, No. 4 Florida State and No. 7 Notre Dame.
