Adele sweeps Grammys with 5 wins; Bowie gets 5

LOS ANGELES – Although Adele flubbed during her live performance at the Grammys, she walked away the belle of the ball: She took home five awards Sunday night, including album, record and song of the year.

She beat Beyonce in the top three categories with her comeback album “25,” and repeated her accomplishments from 2012, when the British star also won album, song and record of the year at the Grammys. She’s the first artist in Grammy history to sweep the top three categories twice, and now has a total of 15 Grammys.

She used her speech to honor Beyonce and her groundbreaking “Lemonade” album, which also was nominated.

“The way you make my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel is empowering,” Adele said at the Staples Center in Los Angeles when accepting album of the year.

“I adore you. You move my soul everyday ...

I adore you and I want you to be my mommy,” Adele said to a very pregnant Beyonce just minutes before picking up song of the year for “Hello.”

The night for Adele wasn’t all good though: The singer, who had trouble with her live performance at last year’s Grammys, asked to restart her tribute to George Michael, telling the audience: “I can’t mess this up for him.” She stopped and used an expletive after singing some of a new arrangement of Michael’s “Fastlove,” as videos and photos of Michael played in the background. She re-sang the song and earned applause and support from the crowd, though Adele was teary eyed.

Michael died on Christmas Day. At last year’s show, the British singer had a hiccup after a microphone inside a piano fell onto the instrument’s strings.

A number of other icons were honored, including Prince: Bruno Mars – rocking a glittery, Prince-like purple blazer, worked the guitar like a pro while singing the icon’s “Let’s Go Crazy.”

The Time – who worked closely with the Prince – brought the audience to its feet with funky performances of “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.”

“Make some noise for Prince y’all,” Mars yelled. Mars also was a winner Sunday – he won for his producing work on Adele’s album. Adele’s other wins included best pop vocal album and pop solo performance.

David Bowie, who died last year from cancer, won all five awards he was nominated for.

“Blackstar,” his final album released days after he died, won best alternative music album and engineered album, nonclassical (Bowie is listed as one of the engineers on “Blackstar.”) In the latter category, he beat out Prince, who also died last year. The title track won best rock song and rock performance.

Chance the Rapper won the first award in the live telecast for best new artist. He also won best rap album – the first streaming-only album to do so – and bested Drake and Kanye West.

Huntley Outlet Center shops set closing dates

hprokop@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The Huntley Outlet Center soon will be a ghost town, as most stores have set closing dates for later this month through midMarch.

The mall at Route 47 and Interstate 90 was less than half full when it was bought in April by Huntley Investment Partners LLC, which consists of California-based Craig Realty Group, Chicago’s Prime Group Inc. and Elgin’s Capital Realty and Development.

Since then, the property

has fallen into disrepair, and stores have posted liquidation sale signs in windows as their closing dates near.

Wilsons Leather, Ann Taylor Factory Store, L’eggs Hanes Bali Playtex and Huntley Antique and Jewelry Mall have announced February closing dates, and Bass Factory Outlet has set a March 12 closing date.

Darna Furniture and Banana Republic Factory Store have not yet announced closing dates.

“It’s about being passionate about all things real estate,” said Miller, a managing broker at Coldwell Banker Honig-Bell in McHenry. “To me, that involves doing sales, management, participating in a leadership level and mentoring new people who come into the industry.”

In recognition of Miller’s work, the trade association Illinois REALTORS recently named the McHenry broker the 2017 Illinois Realtor of the Year.

The award is given to an association member who best represents the professional qualities of being a real estate agent, recognizing his or her leadership and service to civic, community and

charitable causes.

“I love what I do,” Miller said. “I never expected to be honored for just loving what I do. It’s always been an ongoing and uplifting practice of ‘What can I do to help the industry?’ ” Miller was nominated by the Heartland REALTOR Organization board of directors and then was selected for the award by the state association’s Realtor of the Year Committee.

The announcement was made late last month at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Riverfront Conference Sue Miller Center in East Peoria.

“I was shocked and honored to win,” Miller said. “It is a very humbling honor to receive this from your peers because it does recognize you for making a difference.”

Douglas McAllister, owner of Douglas Automotive, explained that it might seem counter intuitive to do that, but it’s the right course of action.

Miller has been actively involved with the association at the local, state and national levels, while also serving in a variety of other leadership capacities.

At the national level, Miller has served on the National Association of Realtor Board of Directors and on other units such as the Equal Opportunity-Cultural Diversity and Real Property Valuation committees. She also is a member of the Women’s Council of REALTORS and the Heartland REALTOR Organization, among others.

Miller said she manages 30 agents and still does the work she expects them to do.

“I still list, sell and put people in my car and help them make the biggest decision of their life in terms of financially buying a home or investing in real estate,” Miller said.

According to Illinois REALTORS, Miller will be honored at a banquet June 6 in Springfield.

MARENGO – The General Federation of Women’s Clubs Illinois offers a number of scholarships for students who will be attending an Illinois school, including the $500 Arthur Grant Smith Scholarship for drama, the $300 GFWC Illinois Centennial Library Science Scholarship, the $1,000 Hamilton Ridge Scholarship for music, two $1,000 Illinois Cottage Park Ridge Vocational Scholarships for Girls, two $1,000 Lincoln Lodge Vocational Scholarships for Boys, the $1,000 Lorado Taft Scholarship for art and the $1,000 Vina Miller Memorial Scholarship with emphasis on international outreach.

Illinois DNR seeks volunteers for state park positions

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteers for positions at Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Road, Ingleside; Moraine Hills State Park, 1510 S. River Road, McHenry; and McHenry Dam, McHenry Dam Road, off River Road, McHenry.

Docents are needed at Volo Bog to greet visitors, answer questions and promote awareness of programs and events at the site.

Docents also tend to the Friends of Volo Bog’s Tamarack Shop.

Weekend bog naturalists also are sought, to lead guided bog tours. A three-day training workshop for docents and naturalists will continue Feb. 19 and 25.

Docents also are needed at Moraine Hills State Park, with training beginning in April.

Volunteers are needed for the Habitat Restoration and Stewardship Team at Volo Bog, Moraine Hills and McHenry Dam to help with planting, seed-gathering and more.

In addition, volunteer gardeners are needed tend the native prairie and woodland gardens at the three sites from late March through mid-November.

Culver’s to host fundraiser for diabetes research

nlinhart@shawmedia.com McHENRY – The Culver’s in McHenry is partnering with JDRF Illinois to host a fundraiser Thursday to help raise money for type 1 diabetes research.

The fundraising event, called “The Family Mini Mix Up,” will be from 4 to 8 p.m. at 1101 Adams Drive, McHenry.

Along with collecting donations from guests, Culver’s will offer specially priced $2 mini concrete mixers, with $1 from each mixer sold benefiting JDRF. According to the Illinois chapter of JDRF, guests who have dined at Chicago-area Culver’s restaurants since mid-January have donated their spare change to the organization.

MCC foundation receives $10K grant to support vets NORTHWEST HERALD CRYSTAL LAKE – The Friends of MCC Foundation recently received a $10,000 donation supporting a laptop and textbooks grant in McHenry County College’s Veterans’ Services program.

The donation went toward the Pay it Forward grant, which helps ensure veterans have the materials they need on the first day of class. It was sent by an anonymous source and will benefit student veterans during the spring semester.

“This anonymous gift arrives at MCC at a critical time in the school year,” said Loreen Keller, interim dean for Humanities and Social Sciences who also serves as the veterans’ program administrator.

“It’s a shame they’re tearing down the building,” Matousek said. “Everybody’s really feeling bad about it, but it is what it is.”

No demolition permits have been submitted to the village regarding the property, Huntley Village Manager Dave Johnson said.

However, property developers have said industrial use was being considered for the 77-acre property, and there is expected to be a major overhaul of the property when a new use is determined.

Property owners could not immediately be reached for information.

“It’s an important part of the future of our community, and we’re going to certainly examine and analyze thoroughly any plans that are submitted,” Johnson said, adding that no formal proposals have come before the Huntley Village Board.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Edward Tipper, a World War II paratrooper who was portrayed in the HBO series “Band of Brothers,” has died. He was 95.

He died Feb. 1 in the Denver suburb of Lakewood, said his daughter, Kerry Tipper.

Edward Tipper was a member of the famed Easy Company, part of the 101st Airborne Division, and parachuted into France as part of the June 6, 1944, Allied D-Day invasion.

The company’s exploits were retold in “Band of Brothers,” based on research by historian Stephen Ambrose.

Tipper was interviewed for the se-

ries and was portrayed by actor Bart Ruspoli.

A few days after the parachute drop, Tripper’s eye and leg were badly injured by a mortar shell. He was hospitalized for a year.

Tipper was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Doctors gave him a list of things he couldn’t do, but that became a checklist for things to master, his daughter said.

“He was defiant above all,” she told The Denver Post. He took up handball, not because he liked it, but to prove he could do it, she said.

He was an avid skier and kept that up into his 80s, Kerry Tipper said.

LOS ANGELES – Grammy-winning jazz singer Al Jarreau, who transcended genres over a 50-year career, died Sunday at a Los Angeles hospital, just days after announcing his retirement from touring because of exhaustion, his manager Joe Gordon confirmed.

His official Twitter account said he died surrounded by his wife, son and a few other family members and friends. He was 76.

Jarreau was hospitalized earlier in the week and was said to have been improving slowly. The cause of his death was not revealed, but he had experienced a number of respiratory and cardiac issues in recent years.

The Milwaukee native won seven Grammys over the course of his half-century in music. His biggest single was 1981’s “We’re in This Love Together” from the album “Breakin’ Away.” Jarreau was also a vocalist on the all-star 1985 track, “We Are the World,” and sang the theme to TV’s “Moonlighting.”

“We feel very fortunate to have worked with Al, one of the most distinctive and extraordinary vocalists in the music,” said Concord Records

President John Burk in a statement.

“He was truly a force of nature and a beautiful human being that will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by us all.”

Jarreau is one of the few artists to have won Grammys in three separate categories – jazz, pop and R&B. Time Magazine once called him the “greatest jazz singer alive.”

News of Jarreau’s death came as the Grammy Awards were kicking off in Los Angeles.

“He was really one of the most creative vocalists who ever lived,” jazz singer Tierney Sutton told The Associated Press on the red carpet. “His voice was Al Jarreau like an instrument.”

Sutton collaborated with Jarreau on the Joni Mitchell tribute album “After Blue” from 2013.

“Al Jarreau was incredible,” Jill Scott told the AP. “He was one of the most awesome, strange performers I ever met – and I mean strange in the best way. He was all about elegance, whether it was drinking a cup of tea or saying good morning.”

Scott, an R&B singer, recorded with Jarreau and George Benson in 2006 on “God Bless the Child.”

Kennedy: ‘We’re not an authoritarian country’

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy said he thinks what President Donald Trump has done so far in office will “hopefully spark a re-examination of who we are as a people.”

The member of one of the nation’s most famous Democratic families told The Associated Press in an interview he sees threats to the constitutional form of government, and said his father, the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, of Massachusetts, believed that Americans should never take democracy for granted.

“He lost his brothers serving this country, whether in World War II or in elective office, and just knew that this country needed to be the beacon that everyone looked at it around the world,” Kennedy told the AP. “He’d be so distressed right now to see people cynically tear apart what so many people have laid down their lives to build.”

The former eight-term congressman from Rhode Island left office in 2011 and has stayed in the public sphere as an activist for better care for mental health and addiction, with endeavors such as The Kennedy Forum. He now lives in

Illinois worker pay battle to resurface in court, assembly

SPRINGFIELD – The question of whether to continue paying government workers during Illinois’s budget stalemate will surface again this week as a court takes up the state attorney general’s motion to halt payments and lawmakers consider a threat by Gov. Bruce Rauner to veto one of two proposals to keep them going.

A judge in St. Clair County on Thursday is scheduled to hear Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s request to end paychecks until the state breaks its nearly two-year-long budget gridlock. She is asking the judge to reverse a previous court order requiring Illinois to pay state employees even in the absence of a budget, arguing that stopping pay is constitutional and will hasten a budget agreement.

Girls, 11 and 12, shot in head in separate Chicago attacks

CHICAGO – Police are investigating separate shootings on Chicago’s South Side that left two young girls in critical condition.

The Chicago Tribune reported that an 11-year-old girl was sitting in a parked vehicle Saturday night when she was hit by gunfire in the back of the head.

A 12-year-old girl was shot in the head while playing with friends in an unrelated shooting the same night.

The weekend’s gun violence also claimed the lives of a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman in separate incidents.

The Tribune reported that at least four others were wounded Saturday in separate attacks.

Illinois teachers learn to help students affected by trauma

DECATUR – Six schools in central Illinois are participating in a pilot project to train teachers, administrators and other adults to help students who are affected by trauma.

The program began through a Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration grant to train school district personnel and community members, the Decatur Herald & Review reported. They learn to approach their work with awareness of trauma, which can affect children’s brain development and their emotional and physical health.

The agency’s statistics show that in the past year, 60 percent of youth nationally have been exposed to violence, including assault with a weapon, sexual victimization, child maltreatment and dating violence.

Schools participating in the program include Franklin and Muffley Schools, Phoenix Academy, Argenta-Oreana, Sangamon

Valley and Deland-Weldon schools.

The program’s goal is to expand the project next year until all schools in the area are involved.

Bradley to build $86M business, engineering site

PEORIA – Bradley University in central Illinois is moving forward with plans to build a new, $86 million business and engineering complex.

The Peoria Journal-Star reported that faculty and staff will begin moving out of an existing building after spring graduation to make way for the new complex. It will be built on the current site of Baker Hall, which will be demolished.

The 270,000-square-foot building is intended to attract more students, businesses and local community members to campus. It’s also part of efforts to jumpstart collaboration between the engineering and business departments.

The board of trustees gave the go-ahead to proceed with the plans after the Peoria university raised almost half of the total cost. The building is scheduled to be completed in 2020.

OROVILLE, Calif. – Thousands evacuated their Northern California homes Sunday evening after authorities warned an emergency spillway in the country’s tallest dam was in danger of failing and unleashing uncontrolled floodwaters on towns below.

About 150 miles northeast of San Francisco, Lake Oroville is one of California’s largest man-made lakes, and the 770-foot-tall Oroville Dam is the nation’s tallest.

At least 130,000 people were asked to evacuate over concerns the dam’s emergency spillway could fail. Hundreds of cars were in bumper-to-bumper traffic on highways and at least two shelters said they were at capacity.

The erosion at the head of the emergency spillway threatens to undermine the concrete weir and allow large, uncontrolled releases of water from Lake Oroville, the California Department of Water Resources said. Those potential flows could overwhelm the capacity of downstream channels and levees.

Butte County Sheriff Koney Honea said engineers with the Department of Water Resources informed him shortly after 6 p.m. that the erosion on the emergency spillway at the Oroville Dam was not advancing as fast as they thought.

Two inches of water still were coming over the dam, but that was significantly down from

earlier flows, he said.

The evacuation order went out around 4 p.m. after engineers spotted a hole that was eroding back toward the top of the spillway.

“Unfortunately, they couldn’t advise me or tell me specifically how much time that would take, so we had to make the very difficult and critical decision to initiate the evacuation of the Orville area and all locations south of that,” he said. “We needed to get people moving quickly to save lives if the worst case scenario came into fruition.”

Honea said there is a plan to plug the hole by using helicopters to drop rocks into the crevasse.

Water began flowing over the emergency spillway at the Oroville Dam in Northern California on Saturday for the first time in its nearly 50-year history after heavy rainfall. Officials earlier Sunday stressed the dam itself was structurally sound and said there was no threat to the public.

Residents of Oroville, a town of 16,000 people, should head north toward Chico, and other cities should follow orders from their local law enforcement agencies, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Yuba County Office of Emergency Services asked residents in the valley floor – including Marysville, a city of 12,000 people – to evacuate and take routes to the east, south or west and avoid traveling north toward Oroville.

Protesters in Mexico demand respect The ASSOCIATED PRESS MEXICO CITY – About 20,000 people staged a march through Mexico’s capital Sunday demanding respect for their country and its migrants in the face of perceived hostility from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Many marchers carried Mexican flags and dressed in white as a sign of unity and to signal the non-political nature of the march. One of the banners read: “Gracias, Trump, for unifying Mexico!”

The marchers protested Trump’s plans for a border wall and increased deportations of migrants. Trump also has pressured U.S. corporations to provide jobs in the U.S., not Mexico.

Mexicans have called for unity in facing the challenge posed by Trump’s policies, but the march featured almost as many banners criticizing Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto as the new U.S. leader.

NEW YORK – The revolution may not be televised – but it apparently will be tweeted. And Facebooked. And Instagrammed.

Not long after President Donald Trump temporarily barred most people from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the U.S., social activist Dex Torricke-Barton took to Facebook.

“I’m thinking of organizing a rally,” he posted. Within a few hours, more than 1,000 people expressed interest. The resulting protest a week later, in front of San Francisco’s City Hall, drew thousands more.

Torricke-Barton is far from alone.

From organizing protests on the fly to raising money for refugee and immigrant rights groups, people have been using social media to fuel the resistance against Trump in ways their organizing predecessors from the 1960s could have hardly imagined.

Roots of protests

In Queens, New York, for instance, a group of 27 women met up to write postcards to their state and local representatives during a “Postcard-Writing Happy Hour” organized through Facebook.

And on Ravelry, the social network for knitters and crocheters, members have been trading advice and knitting patterns for the pink “pussy hats” that emerged as a symbol during the Women’s March on Washington and similar protests elsewhere after Trump’s inauguration.

it’s mixed between digital and physical,” said Jayna Zweiman, one of the founders of the Pussyhat Project. “We harnessed social media for good.”

In 1969, activists planned massive marches around the U.S. to protest the war in Vietnam. The protests, called the Moratorium, drew millions of people around the world. But “it took months, a lot of effort, a national office of the organization to get it off the ground,” said Christopher Huff, a Beacon College professor focused on social movements of the 1960s. “The women’s march was achieved at a much larger scale at a fraction of the time.”

This immediacy is both an asset and a disadvantage. While online networks help people rally quickly around a cause, Huff said, they don’t necessarily help people grasp the “long-term effort” required to sustain a movement.

Online, then off

In Silicon Valley and across the tech world, Trump’s travel ban created a stir that went well beyond the industry’s usual calls for deregulation and more coding classes for kids. Between aggregating donations, issuing fiery statements, and walking out of work in protest, tech company executives and employees took up the anti-Trump cause at a scale not seen in other industries.

New York-based Meetup, for instance, broke with nearly 15 years of helping people form and join interest groups on a non-partisan basis. “We’re vital plumbing for democracy,” the company wrote in a Medium post this week. “But after Donald Trump’s order to block people on the basis of nationality and religion, a line had been crossed.”

So Meetup held a companywide “resist-a-thon” – a riff on the hackathons

tech companies hold to devise new technologies – to help people get involved in the anti-Trump movement known as “the resistance.” It then unveiled more than 1,000 new “#resist” Meetup groups that people can join for free (it’s normally $15 a month to run a group). As of Wednesday, some 35,000 people had joined the #resist Meetup groups, and scheduled 625 events around the world.

Torricke-Barton, who in earlier incarnations wrote speeches for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Alphabet Chairman Eric Schmidt, said he and two sisters of Iranian descent organized their last-minute protest using Facebook groups and Messenger. That’s quite a contrast to Torricke-Barton’s earlier experience protesting violence in Darfur more than a decade ago.

Follow the money

Shortly after Trump’s order, the venture capitalist Bijan Sabet tweeted a link to the fundraising platform Crowdrise alongside an explanation of his support for the American Civil Liberties Union – and then asked his followers to do the same.

Sabet figured it might take as long as two months to reach his $50,000 goal.

It took three days. That weekend, the ACLU raised $24 million, far more than the $4 million it receives in a typical year. Sabet, whose father is from Iran, said he’s seeing civic involvement “level up,” and that social media is pushing that along. Previously, he said, people would maybe say, “yeah, I’m a bit frustrated, but I don’t have all the information, I don’t know how to get involved.”

Now, there’s no excuse.

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Pentagon is launching efforts to solve a baffling World War II mystery: whether dozens of U.S. sailors listed as missing from a ship disaster were actually recovered and buried all along as unknowns in a New York cemetery.

More than 130 victims of the USS Turner’s 1944 explosion and sinking near New York Harbor are still officially missing. But WWII researcher Ted Darcy found papers last year indicating at least four of them were buried as unknowns in a Long Island military cemetery. He believes the rest could be there too.

After The Associated Press initially reported on Darcy’s findings in November, the Pentagon office responsible for recovering and identifying the nation’s war dead said only that the records that could confirm exactly how many of the Turner’s sailors are buried in the cemetery were missing.

But in recent days, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said it is now “taking the steps to send out inquiries and conduct archival research” to try to locate the files associated with the Turner unknowns buried in the cemetery in Farmingdale on Long Island.

Darcy and loved ones of the missing crew members hope that the records could be found, identifications made and that the long-lost remains of the Turner be reburied in marked gravesites with full military honors.

“I’d like to see if we can have closure on this, find out who’s in the graves,” said Richard Duffy, a 61-year-old retired

mechanic from Ballston Spa, New York, who was named after his fallen uncle.

The Turner, a 10-month-old Navy destroyer, sank off Sandy Hook, New Jersey, after a series of internal explosions on Jan. 3, 1944. The Navy never determined what caused the initial blast, but an inquiry found that munitions were being handled below deck around the time of the first explosion. Half of the nearly 300 men on board survived, but scores of others were killed and listed as missing. Some remains were recovered from the sunken wreckage during the yearlong salvage operation, but an exact number remains unknown.

Margaret Duffy Sickles was not quite 5 years old when her family in Whitehall, New York, received word that her brother, 18-year-old Fireman 1st Class Richard Duffy, was among the missing. After reading the AP story in November, she sought the help of New York congressional delegation, hoping it could persuade the Pentagon to make an attempt to identify the remains buried on Long Island.

“I will work with the families to cut through red tape and ensure that the Department of Defense’s POW/MIA Accounting Agency does everything it can to try to properly identify these brave Americans,” said U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, a Democrat.

Sickles, of Kingston, said identifying any of the remains after 73 years would be difficult but not impossible given advances with DNA and other technology.

“It’s quite possible my brother isn’t even among any of those” buried on Long Island, she said. “Nevertheless, it was something we didn’t know about until this story came out.”

THESSALONIKI, Greece – Authorities in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki said an unexploded World War II bomb found under a gas station was defused Sunday and safely taken to an army firing range outside the city, paving the way for over 70,000 people to return home.

The roads in western Thessaloniki and the suburb of Kordelio, where most of those forced to evacuate earlier Sunday came from, have reopened. Authorities had shut down a 1.2-mile radius for experts to safely work on the bomb.

The U.S.-made 275-pound bomb was “badly corroded, but its detonation mechanism was still in very good condition,” said Army spokesman Col. Nikos Fanios.

The Army had initially estimated that the bomb weighed 500 pounds.

Officials said it was 5 feet long.

The bomb will be either detonated or dismantled at the firing range, Fanios said. He added that similar bombs had been found in previous years near the Macedonia Airport east of the city, but, with the area being mostly open fields, no large scale evacuation had been deemed necessary.

Sunday’s evacuation started at 7 a.m., with police went house-to-house ringing bells and knocking on doors to remind people to leave.

Bomb disposal experts started work at 11.30 a.m., 90 minutes later than planned, but defused the bomb

in only 30 minutes, Central Macedonia governor Apostolos Tzizikostas announced.

Calling the operation “a total success,” he said it was the largest peacetime population evacuation in Greece and estimated it involved 70,000 people.

Many people left the area in their cars, but some were bused to schools and sports halls elsewhere in the city.

“We heard on TV that, if the bomb explodes, it will be like a strong earthquake,” Michalis Papanos, 71, told The Associated Press as he and his wife, Yiannoula, headed out of their home.

Alexander Bogdani and his wife, Anna Bokonozi, left on foot, pushing a stroller with their toddler daughter.

“We are afraid for the child,” Bogdani said.

The city’s main bus station was shut down, trains in the area were halted and churches canceled Sunday services. The city also booked a 175-room hotel where people with limited mobility were taken on Saturday.

Among the evacuees were 450 refugees staying at a former factory who were bused to visit the city’s archaeological museum.

One resident recalled the day the bomb fell.

“The bombing was done by English and American planes on Sept.

17, 1944. It was Sunday lunchtime,” said Giorgos Gerasimou, 86, whose home is half a mile away from the bomb site.

Public has right to know We are not concerned for ourselves.

When we hear about the Trump administration imposing media blackouts on some federal departments, it’s not the journalists covering the presidency that we worry about. And it’s not reporters we are anxious for when we hear the president and his advisers say they rely on “alternative facts” that only serve to support their opinions. Or when specific media outlets are frozen out as retribution for their commitment to reporting actual facts.

No, we are upset on behalf of you. The fundamental tenet of journalism is this: We subscribe to the idea that freedom is only achievable when a country’s citizens have access to factual information they can use to make their own decisions. While not the only conduit of information, journalists are often the ones that provide it. When we are impeded from doing so, we raise a little hell because our audiences expect nothing less.

It is why the press decried President Donald Trump’s ordered media blackouts at the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of the Interior and the Agriculture Department. It is understandable for a new administration to review the way information is shared, or that some information is sensitive and disclosure of it would harm national security. It is unacceptable to completely stop its dissemination, which is what happened on Inauguration Day when the EPA was told it could not issue news releases, blog updates or posts to the agency’s social media accounts.

When the press is stymied from doing its job, it’s taxpayers who are shortchanged. But it is being painted in a different light: The media are, according to Trump officials, the opposition party. During his first full day in office, Trump said he had a “running war with the media. They are among the most dishonest human beings on Earth.”

He has since slammed the New York Times and Washington Post. His spokesmen are forbidden from going on CNN. These are outlets that have reported factual information he has not liked, and his reaction has been to punish them.

That’s not to say journalists are infallible. Like all professions, there have been bad apples. And mistakes are made even by the good ones. Reputable media organizations correct and apologize when that happens. But the core commitment to our audience has never changed. We will fight for your right to have access to information. And we will remind elected officials that if they truly have the best interests of their constituents at heart, they will not demand to be the owners of information but stewards of it on behalf of those they represent.

Time to hurt animals?

To the Editor: As he was signing edicts hurting one group after another over the past two weeks, it was only a matter of time before Donald Trump got around to hurting animals, already the most oppressed sentient beings on earth.

The animals’ turn came when he took down the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) site that reports on government regulation of roughly 9,000 animal handling facilities. These are labo-

ratories, dog breeders, fur farms, circuses, zoos and aquariums. The site is used every day by animal protection activists to monitor government enforcement of the 1966 Animal Welfare Act, the only effective federal law protecting animals.

Taking down the APHIS inspection site is a huge setback for animal protection. It will almost certainly lead to reduced government inspection of animal facilities and more animal suffering, a virtual repeal of the Animal Welfare Act. Ironically, this oppressive act was launched by the same dark-of-night process as that of pulling more than 100,000 visas from thoroughly vetted Muslim immigrants one week earlier – no notice, no hearings, no due process, no public announcement.

The oppressive mindset doesn’t really care who the victims are.

Hopefully, the courts will.

The good news, of course, is that the United States isn’t going to pay for it. Trump tweet: “Mexico will pay for the wall!”

That’s right, Mexico will pay for it! How that will happen isn’t entirely clear, but Trump says they will pay for it, eventually, “100 percent.”

That $21.6 billion is a bigger chunk of Mexico’s budget, making up about 1.9 percent of their total economic production in 2015.

Trump’s team has suggested that one mechanism for forcing Mexico to pay for the wall is by increasing tariffs on Mexican products sold in the United States. Those increased costs would be borne by American consumers, mind you, but this would, I guess, get Mexico to pay out of pocket to protect its industries?

It’s not totally clear.

We looked at this a few weeks ago. If we increase tariffs on products from Mexico, Americans would need to buy 36 billion Mexican avocados to pay off the wall. Inspired by Matt McDaniel’s calculations from that analysis, we can report that this is enough avocados to build a wall solely out of avocados that stretches the length of the U.S.-Mexico border and reaches 242 feet into the air (assuming a fourinch by 2.5-inch avocado). At 1,163 avocados high and 30.9 million avocados long, it would be porous - given that avocados aren’t perfectly square - and it would rot pretty quickly, but: still.

Incidentally, it wasn’t Isaac Newton who said that thing about bridges and walls. It was Joseph Fort Newton, a Baptist minister who was also a noted Freemason and author. That’s probably more fitting. If anyone knows about both building things and the intricacies of the government, I’d offer that it’s a Freemason.

One of this week’s 286,000 leaks from the executive branch of the government was a document from the Department of Homeland Security putting a price tag on a wall on the border with Mexico.

You remember the wall! President Donald Trump, then-candidate Trump, talked about the wall a lot on the campaign trail. His concerns about immigration from Mexico and Central America were among the first articulated in the speech announcing the candidacy, but his advocacy for a wall predates that by a wide margin. Here’s a Trump tweet from before his candidacy on the subject. “ ‘We build too many walls and not enough bridges.’ -- Isaac Newton” Oops. Wrong tweet. Meant this one.

“SECURE THE BORDER! BUILD A WALL!” The Wall is synonymous with Trump by now. He even got into high-profile fights over it, as when he was criticized last February

by Pope Francis. “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,” Francis said. “No leader, especially a religious leader, has the right to question another man’s religion or faith,” Trump responded, clearly angry that the pope hadn’t read his tweet from 2013.

But we never really knew what it would cost. Trump said it would cost about $8 billion, when prompted on the campaign trail.

Our fact-checkers were skeptical, figuring, after consulting with experts, that it could near $25 billion if built to the specifications set by Trump. At least, the low-end of those specifications. Over the course of the campaign, Trump’s wall varied in height from 30 to 55 feet.

In October 2015, it was at 50 feet, for example, made up of giant slabs of concrete.

That’s a lot of wall and a lot of concrete.

One assessment of the wall estimated that its construction alone would increase demand for concrete in the United States by 1 percent in 2018 and 2019.

Anyway. The Department of Homeland Security, as mentioned, has an estimate, reported by Reuters: $21.6 billion, with a three-and-ahalf year construction period.

Let’s talk about that number. $21.6 billion is a lot of money by normal-American standards, though not necessarily by American-government standards. Spread out among every person in the United States, it comes to $67.73 each. Or, spread out among all of those who paid federal income taxes in 2015 – about 137.3 million people – it’s $157.31 each. As a function of total government spending in fiscal year 2017, it’s about one-half of 1 percent, though, of course, it would be spread over several years.

If we compare the price estimate to estimat-

ed spending in the 2017 fiscal year, though, we get a sense of how pricey the wall is. Per the Office of Management and Budget, it’s more than will be spent this year on:

Treadmill or run outside?

Dear Doctor: Is walking or running on a treadmill as good as walking or running on concrete streets or sidewalks?

Dear Reader: This is an interesting question, because the definition of “as good as” is quite ambiguous. Good can be defined as having cardiovascular, or other, health benefits, but it also can be defined as having mental or social health benefits, such as those that come from running or walking with another person. For the purposes of this question, let’s look at the cardiovascular aspects.

A 1985 study in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise measured the amount of oxygen consumed during both treadmill running and outdoor running. The level of oxygen consumption, termed VO2, is a measure of energy expenditure with exercise.

The subjects ran 950 meters on a treadmill and outdoors. The subjects also ran at varying speeds and at different elevation grades.

The investigators found no difference in the amounts of oxygen consumed with either the outdoor or treadmill running. This was consistently seen, even when there were changes in speed or elevation grade.

A 1996 study in the Journal of Sports Sciences similarly looked at the differences in VO2 in nine athletes who ran both outside and on treadmills at varying speeds and elevation grades. This study showed some significant differences in the VO2 between outside and treadmill running. Overall, those who exercised outside consumed more oxygen than those on a treadmill. This may be partially related to the wind resistance seen with outdoor exercise.

The authors concluded running outside on flat terrain was similar to treadmill running at a 1 percent elevation grade. So, if you want to equate your treadmill running to what you might experience outside, place your treadmill at a 1 percent grade.

from outdoor running in one respect: Your muscles respond differently. Because a treadmill is powered by a machine, not your body, the hamstring muscles are not used as much – something you may notice if you normally run on a treadmill and then decide to go running outside. In that case, to prevent an injury, slow your pace.

A significant benefit from running on a treadmill is the belt of the treadmill is much more forgiving than the concrete of the sidewalk. While there has been no long-term study regarding the benefit of treadmill running on the joints, it stands to reason exercising on a treadmill could decrease the incidence of knee and back injuries.

Alternatively, one definite positive from outdoor running is it’s less monotonous than treadmill running. The changes of scenery and terrain keep things interesting. When I run on a trail, I constantly am looking at the rocks I have to avoid, and I often have to move laterally to follow the trail. When I get to the top of the mountain, looking down at the expanse of earth below me, I get a perspective that is much different than running on a treadmill. This cannot be measured, but it motivates me to run again. If you like running or walking on a treadmill, by all means continue doing this. The cardiovascular benefits are similar to outdoor exercise, and it may be less hard on your joints. The most important thing is to take the time and exercise, whether it be inside or outside.

DEAR ABBY My boss wants to do a day of Jeanne community Phillips service with the staff to help others and improve relationships in the workplace.

I thought it was a great idea; a lot of my co-workers were unsure and wanted more information about what specifically we would do. My boss said she would get more information and send it out to us. However, a few of my co-workers are outright opposed to the idea and think they shouldn’t be required to do it.

A year ago when this came up, one of them said they shouldn’t have to give up their free time. I think it’s wrong to turn down a chance to help others when they are able. What should I do to make sure my boss’s intentions are understood while not being off-putting or appearing holier-than-thou? – Bleeding Heart Dear Bleeding Heart: The person who should be making her intentions clear is your boss. It should not be your responsibility.

Frankly, I can see both sides of this question. Some companies do this not only to “do good,” but also to build goodwill in the community and team spirit in the office. Usually, participation is voluntary.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend and I have been together for two years. He’s eight years younger than I am. We have a great relationship except for our worldviews. While I am liberal, he is very racist. When the subject comes up, our conversations can become very heated.

I believe everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, but both of us have a hard time validating our opinions for each other. My boyfriend never directs his racist comments toward anyone in particular, but it’s hard for me not to take it that way.

One of my best friends is African-American, and my son is dating someone who is biracial. A novel event for mixed teams was held from October 31 to November 2, 2016. Four teams played online in three venues. The Bridge Base Online (BBO) team was at the Silver Cloud Broadway Hotel in Seattle; Lavazza competed at the company’s research center in Turin, Italy; and the Chinese Contract Bridge Association (CCBA) and Yeh played in the Beijing International Convention Center.

The event consisted of a round robin of 16-board matches. The final result was Lavazza 83.64 victory points, CCBA 65.98, Yeh 49.59 and BBO 40.79.

The highlight for the BBO team was the participation of Bill Gates, who partnered Sharon Osberg. Their teammates were Jill Meyers-Bob Hamman and Sheri Winestock-Fred Gitelman.

Today’s deal was one that Gates played. At his table, North-South were “happy” with three clubs, made with an overtrick.

But in the given auction, Meyers bid a game-invitational three clubs, and Hamman went for game in no-trump. West led the spade two: three, ace, six. East returned the spade nine: king, four, heart five.

What did Hamman do next?

Declarer could have gotten lucky in clubs, but knew that that was against the odds -- 16.96 percent, to be precise. Instead, Hamman played a diamond to the ace and a heart to his 10. With hearts 3-3, West had no defense, but she surprisingly led another spade, so Hamman immediately claimed nine tricks: three spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club.

That gave BBO 10 international match points against Lavazza.

Gasienica’s father and his grandfather were ski jumpers in Poland. Patrick’s father, Albert Gasienica, moved to the United States as a teenager.

Patrick has been ski jumping since he was about 8 years old.

“It runs in my family,” he said.

Young ski jumpers start on the smaller hills: 5 meters, 10 meters, 20, all the way up to 90 and 120 meters.

His coach at Norge, Scott Smith, has been working with him for about six years, although he has known Albert for even longer. “[Patrick] is a very talented jumper,” Smith said. “He’s not afraid. He loves to go far. It’s a sport where when you get to that high level, you have to go to the bottom of the hill to win.

There were fewer skiers jumping, but it didn’t lessen the excitement any for Norge Ski Club’s 112th annual International Winter Tournament. A postponement and windy conditions meant fewer competitors for Sunday’s main event.

It did not, however, mean a smaller crowd.

A total of 12 competitors jumped in four ski jumping classes. Last year those four classes combined for 53 competitors. Because of the postponement from the original Jan. 21 to 22 dates, no international competitors jumped Sunday.

Skiers from Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota participated.

Those who did compete had a better chance to reach the podium, including three Norge members.

Cara Larson, 16, of Barrington finished second of two competitors in the U20 women’s class. She won the event last year. Hunter Gibson, 15, of Fox River Grove took second in the U20 men’s class. Patrick Gasienica, 18, of Richmond, took third in the Class A, the highest level of competition.

“It was a lot of fun,” Larson said. “We haven’t jumped this hill since the summer. It was a lot of fun to get back on it and kind of put on a nice show.

“All the people, you don’t get this at every competition. It’s really great to see this many people cheering you on.”

Andrew Urlaub of Flying Eagles Ski Club (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) had the day’s longest jump in competition of 77.5 meters. His 225 edged Gibson’s 208.1.

Gasienica finished behind Brian Wallace of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Nick Mattoon, also of Flying Eagles Ski Club.

“I jumped pretty good, could have been better, obviously,” Gasienica said.

“It was really windy. You didn’t know what you were going to get. It was kind of nerve-wracking up at the top. In the end it was good.”

Winds during competition reached as high as 26 mph. The temperature was 43 degrees and sunny, which kept the crowd happy. That same crowd-pleasing weather was what kept Norge organizers at the site overnight for the past three days making sure the hill was ready for competition.

The job wasn’t done Sunday, either.

Crews applied liquid nitrogen to the track between rounds to make sure the snow stayed firm.

“It was not in perfect condition,” Larson said. “But rarely do we get perfect conditions.”

Practicing at Norge lately has been challenging. Warm weather has kept snow off the ground and even forced Norge’s signature event, its 112-yearold International Winter Tournament, to be postponed from Jan. 21 to 22 until this weekend.

Gasienica said it actually is easier to practice in the summer, when they use a porcelain track and a turf landing hill. In the winter, using the natural surface, skiers can’t jump unless there’s snow. Gasienica said he still goes to the gym every day, even when he can’t jump.

Smith estimates Gasienica is the fifth or sixth Norge skier to qualify for junior worlds. The competition in

Utah was tough. Gasienica finished 53rd in the 100-meter hill size and was a member of the U.S. team that finished 11th on the 100-meter hill.

“Junior worlds was a good experience,” he said. “I could have done way better, but I’ve got next year.”

Smith noted that the weather hindered Gasienica’s ability to practice.

Before this weekend’s tournament, Norge members had not jumped the hill since the summer.

“It’s a great achievement to make the junior worlds team,” Smith said.

“The biggest thing with Patrick, with living here, it’s tough with weather like this. You can’t jump. Our biggest challenge right now is getting him on

skis and jumping.”

Gasienica also plays soccer at Richmond-Burton. He said he plans to attend McHenry County College and continue to pursue ski jumping after high school.

Norge has a total of about 40 kids in its ski jumping program. Smith coaches a handful of the more experienced ski jumpers.

The tournament at Norge this weekend was another chance for Gasienica to jump on his home turf.

“I just like the feeling you get when you’re through the air, flying,” Gasienica said. “It’s the rush you get.

It’s surreal. It’s an amazing experience and feeling.”

When the Bulls announced they were firing Tom Thibodeau despite two years left on his contract, it also came with a seemingly classless kick out the door.

“When everyone is on the same page, trust develops and teams can grow and succeed together,’’ board chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement regarding the removal of the then-Bulls coach that afternoon. “Unfortunately, there has been a departure from this culture.’’

There was no retaliation from Thibodeau. He chose to take the high road. Or maybe he just chose to wait to deliver his statement.

Make that two statements and counting after Sunday.

For the second time this season, Thibodeau had the last laugh, sweeping the season series from the Bulls by manhandling the visiting team, 117-89.

Sure, the Bulls were undermanned with Dwyane Wade (right wrist bruise), Jimmy Butler (right heel bruise), Nikola Mirotic (back spasms) and Paul Zipser (left ankle/illness) all out, but if they think they were going to get any sympathy from Thibodeau, think again.

Even with coach Fred Hoiberg forced to start the likes of Taj Gibson, Robin Lopez, Doug McDermott, Michael Carter-Williams and Jerian Grant, it was still no excuse for letting a 21-34 team come out and sprint ahead for a 34-17 first-quarter lead.

“Oh, without a doubt,’’ Taj Gibson said, when asked whether these two wins meant extra for Thibodeau. “I know him too well. When most people think it’s not a big deal, it’s a big deal to him. You saw he kept coaching the whole game. He even left some of the guys in late.

“I could see his hand shaking all the way on our end. I know he really wanted to win that game, and nothing is going to change. He’s going to be the same guy.’’

Gibson also understood why Thibodeau always will enjoy beating his former team.

“He doesn’t forget things,’’ Gibson said. “He’s going to always have the Bulls on his radar. Just the way the game goes.

A lot of people tend to hold grudges, but it’s none of my business. That’s between him and the guys [above].’’

Butler felt the same way when it came to Thibodeau. Asked whether Thibodeau always will enjoy beating the Bulls, Butler replied, “As he should. Not only because it’s his former team, but because you want to win as many games in this league as possible, as he knows, as we all know. Wins are hard to come by, so I’m sure he’s excited along with those guys over there.’’

Thibodeau again downplayed any hard feelings he still carries for the Bulls, but his actions spoke loudly. That meant keeping Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins on the floor until the final few minutes with his team up 20 points. ““I had a great five years there, so I pull for them when they’re not playing against us,’’ Thibodeau said.

Hoiberg optimistic Butler will be OK after rest

jcowley@suntimes.com MINNEAPOLIS – Four games into this road trip, Fred Hoiberg was talking about building “momentum’’ and understanding the “urgency.’’

By Sunday, the second-year Bulls coach was simply looking for enough warm bodies to throw on the court.

The Bulls entered the finale of the six-game ice show trip without Jimmy Butler, Dwyane Wade, Nikola Mirotic and Paul Zipser.

Obviously, it was the Wade and Butler injuries that were the most concerning, especially because they might drag on longer than first expected.

Butler had been dealing with the foot problem since the win in Oklahoma City, and felt good enough to come back and practice Thursday after missing three games. Maybe not the best decision, especially because that scrimmage brought pain back into the

foot area.

Butler gutted through the loss in Phoenix but admitted afterward that the pain wasn’t subsiding.

Now, the Bulls have to figure out whether they should shut down Butler for the rest of the week leading into the All-Star break or let him play against Toronto and Boston.

“It’s really a day-to- Jimmy Butler day situation with the heel,’’ Hoiberg said. “Jimmy knows his body pretty well. He’s comfortable that if he sits these next two days, he’ll feel significantly better.’’

Hoiberg was asked whether he felt it was a mistake to play Butler against the Suns, and responded, “No.’’ The idea of advising Butler to sit out the All-Star Game in New Orleans also has not come up yet, the coach said.

“I don’t want to sit down and not

play,’’ Butler said of the All-Star Game. “At times you got to think about the body and what’s going on.

Like I said, if I can suit up, I feel like I have to do that.’’

Wade won’t have that worry, as his All-Star break will be just that – a break.

The concerns for the 35-year-old and his wrist, however, were serious enough for him to have an X-ray on Sunday, and possibly an MRI on Monday in Chicago.

Wade suffered the injury against the Suns, when he fell down and landed on both wrists.

“Obviously, I’ve played through a lot of things, so I can play through this if it’s manageable, but not [Sunday],’’ Wade said. “Can’t even bend it. So we’ll see.’’

In Rondo’s corner: Former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau knows Rajon Rondo from their days together on the 2008 world champion Boston team, and while he didn’t get caught up

in Rondo’s Instagram firestorm last month, Thibodeau has a pulse on what Rondo’s about.

“The public part is maybe not the best way to do it, but being truthful is the only way you can build trust,’’ Thibodeau said. “So I think that’s important. He’s always had great leadership ability. And again, I don’t know what went on there. “[Rondo’s] unique. He’s got a great mind. I always found him, at that time, I thought he was fantastic with our team. At that time, we had a lot of personalities on our team, and it was positive. We probably wouldn’t have won a championship without that personality.’’

White Sox starter Jose Quintana remains on the trading block as pitchers and catchers are set to report to spring training Tuesday in Glendale, Arizona.

Whether the trade noise affects Quintana during the spring and/or during the first few months of the season bears watching.

When he was hours away from signing a five-year, $26.5 million extension in the spring of 2014 (which includes club options in 2019 and 2020), Quintana had the roughest outing of his life, failing to retire all nine batters he faced in the first inning of a Cactus League outing against the Athletics.

Then 25, Quintana would admit to a rare case of nerves. Hahn would say that “it played very much on his mind during spring training.”

Aside from that hiccup, Quintana has been unaffected by everything else,

within the farm system: right-handers Zack Burdi, Michael Kopech and Spencer Adams; left-handers Jace Fry, Matt Purke, Brian Clark and Aaron Bummer; catcher Zack Collins; outfielder Courtney Hawkins and infielders Danny Hayes; and Nicky Delmonico.

This isn’t all that bad, considering the Sox haven’t had a winning record since 2012 and are rebuilding now, but it should have an asterisk, with a potentially fluid roster, especially near the trade deadline. Barring an unexpected flirtation with being in contention, closer David Robertson, third baseman Todd Frazier, left fielder Melky Cabrera and starting pitchers Miguel Gonzalez and Derek Holland – to name a handful – could be gone by the trade deadline.

Cubs face challenges that come with championship

The Cubs’ biggest need entering spring training this year?

Ask Theo Epstein, and his first answer is the one he gave last year and likely will give for the next four: pitching.

The Cubs’ never-ending quest for pitching depth aside, Epstein is quick to add one potentially enormous challenge for this year’s team – one as rare as last fall’s championship itself.

“Generally speaking, teams that win it all sometimes face unique challenges, where a lot of things come up that pull everyone associated with the organization in different directions,” the team president said. “And locking back into that team-first, competitive, connected mindset is really important.

“That’s where having such character guys is important,” he added, “and I really trust our group to get locked back

in again.”

Epstein, of course, faced the same challenge as the Boston Red Sox’s general manager in 2005, coming off Boston’s first championship in 86 years.

But it’s hard to imagine that even that Red Sox experience is a full match for the competing distractions Theo Epstein and mind-altering substance of this championship for this century-long suffering franchise and its wildly celebrated players.

These guys not only did the national talk show circuit as those Red Sox, but they twerked on “Saturday Night Live” – where they also sang “Go Cubs Go” with Bill Murray. Jimmy Buffet crashed their White House visit last month. Anthony Rizzo was recognized by somebody while vacationing in Thailand. Ben Zobrist signed autographs on

his front lawn. MVP Kris Bryant and his new bride received piles of wedding gifts from fans. Even rookie relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr., a South Carolina native, was honored this month by the South Carolina state legislature for his part in the Cubs’ championship.

How does anyone top that?

Maybe they don’t.

But that doesn’t change the job they face as pitchers and catchers report for spring training Tuesday. And it definitely doesn’t make it any easier to win it all again as they enter a second consecutive spring favored to do exactly that.

In 14 seasons running baseball departments for two franchises, Epstein has had eight playoff teams, three World Series champs and helped end the two most storied “curses” in American team sports.

One thing his teams haven’t done is repeat, although the Red Sox won 95 games and reached the playoffs again in 2005.

“The primary reason why it’s hard to repeat is just because it’s really difficult to win the World Series,” he said. “In any given year if you’re any old team, you have a 3 percent chance. If you’re the best team, you might have a [10 percent to 12 percent] chance. It’s just hard to do.”

Throw in a post-title celebration – never mind the post-title Celebration of the Century – and the challenges can increase.

“When you win you get pulled in a lot of different directions,” Epstein said.

“And there can be a tendency to at some point, no matter how high the character, to start thinking about yourself a little bit more.

“You have to work really hard – we all do – to avoid any kind of organizational arrogance, any sense of entitlement, to really understand that of all the great thing that happened last year, the most special aspect was we all got to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.”

White Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training Tuesday at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. It will be a group that includes the most closely watched trade candidate in baseball, left-hander Jose Quintana.

Steady, focused and resolute, Quintana calmly answered questions about his precarious position as the Sox’s most valuable trade chip during SoxFest, saying he not only hopes to remain but expects to stay on the South Side.

It seems more a matter of when, not if, Quintana is politely shown the door.

Although deals are indeed made during spring training, the big ones involving players of Quintana’s stature are not commonplace. If he stays, look for him to start Opening Day (April 3 against the Tigers), then go through the trade-rumor mill again as the nonwaiver Aug. 1 deadline approaches. Barring injury or a first-time sag in performance, the 2016 All-Star figures to bring the return general manager Rick Hahn is fixed on securing.

Hahn’s objective? Get a similar package of prospects to what Chris Sale and Adam Eaton yielded to check off the goal of trading the Sox’s top three players, according to wins above replacement, as the first phase of the rebuilding plan.

When the time comes, Quintana will be missed. In the meantime, with Sale gone, he’ll be the leader and ace of the pitching staff starting Tuesday. Barring a trade, that is.

MADISON, Wis. – The Northwestern Wildcats were dancing on the sideline before the second half started. They were downright giddy by the end of the game, stomping off the Kohl Center court.

In beating No. 7 Wisconsin, 66-59, Sunday, Northwestern secured an important win for the school’s bid to make its first NCAA tournament.

Bryant McIntosh scored 25 points, and Dererk Pardon added 11 for the defensive-minded Wildcats (19-6, 8-4), who confounded the Big Ten-leading Badgers in part by doubling dominant big man Ethan Happ.

“I’ve talked about it since I’ve been here,” fourth-year coach Chris Collins said. “We’re trying to build a program to emulate what Wisconsin has done.”

Nigel Hayes scored nine of his 13 points in the second half for the Badgers (21-4, 10-2), who had their eight-game winning streak snapped.

“For us, getting everybody’s best shots, knowing that we’re marked is good for us,” coach Greg Gard said.

“Nothing that happened this game is surprising, areas we need to improve upon.”

The Badgers didn’t let up despite falling behind by 10 points with 1:16 left, closing to 60-55 in 30 seconds after Zak Showalter hit two foul shots.

But McIntosh followed with two free throws with 42 seconds left, and Wisconsin ran out of time. McIntosh finished 10 of 23 from the field.

“I thought I was a gunner, but I never put 23 up in a game. ... I’ve got nothing to say to him anymore,” Collins, a former

Duke guard, joked as he looked in the direction of a smiling McIntosh.

Wisconsin opened the second half with a 10-0 run, looking as if it had solved its offensive woes. Northwestern pulled away for good answering with an 8-0 run capped by Pardon’s dunk with 13:24 left to take a 39-32 lead.

Minus leading scorer Scottie Lindsey because of illness for a third straight game, Northwestern relied on defense to end a two-game skid.

Michigan 75, Indiana 63: At Bloomington, Indiana, Derrick Walton Jr. scored 25 points, and Moritz Wagner had 11 points and 10 rebounds Sunday to lead Michigan past Indiana.

The Wolverines (16-9, 6-6 Big Ten) won their second straight. It was only their 14th win over Indiana in Bloomington.

De’Ron Davis finished with 13 points to lead the Hoosiers (15-11, 5-7). Josh Newkirk and Juwan Morgan each had 11 for Indiana, which has lost three in a row.

Wichita St. 81, Loyola 64: At Chicago, Landry Shamet and Conner Frankamp each scored 16 points, and Wichita State defeated Loyola.

Wichita State (23-4, 13-1 Missouri Valley) led, 40-36, at the half shooting 13 for 26 from the floor and 9 for 11 from the free-throw line. Loyola (16-11, 6-8) kept pace, going 14 for 33 from the floor and 5 for 6 from the line. But the Shockers outscored Loyola, 19-10, in the first eight minutes of the second half and led, 59-46, on a pair of Rauno Nurger free throws.

Clayton Custer scored 19 points, Aundre Jackson finished with 15 and Milton Doyle added 13 for the Ramblers.

STORRS, Conn. – UConn guard Kia Nurse sees a lot of herself when she watches her teammates play, and she knows that’s not an accident.

The Huskies have a chance to win an unprecedented 100th consecutive game Monday against No. 6 South Carolina. Nurse and her teammates said that consistency comes not just in the way the team plays, but in the type of player Geno Auriemma and his staff bring into the program.

“You know that every time you go out on the floor as a Connecticut player you have to sprint the floor,” said Nurse. “You have to run hard.

You have to dive on loose balls, because that’s what everyone else does.

That’s what they did to build this place.”

Auriemma said he has found there is a specific type of player who can

thrive in his program, which has won 11 NCAA titles, including the past four.

He and his staff obviously recruit talented players. But beyond that, he wants someone who is supremely confident in her own ability and someone who impacts whatever team she’s on in multiple ways, making those around her better on and off the court. He also wants someone whose top priority is the team and winning.

He said he can tell whether a recruit will be a good fit by the way she answers his questions and by what type of questions she asks him.

“The majority of the kids we get, they talk about winning championships,” he said. “Whenever a kid says to me, ‘What position am I going to play?’ or, “What’s my role going to be on the team?’ I go, ‘Well, you’re probably not going to have one, because you’re probably not coming to Connecticut.’ ”

That’s just how Spieth wanted it.

Staked to a six-shot lead, Spieth never gave anyone much of a chance by putting for birdie on all but one hole.

He closed with a 2-under-par 70 for a four-shot victory over former U.S. Amateur champion Kelly Kraft, a close friend from Dallas who couldn’t get a putt to fall that might have put a little pressure on Spieth.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS Allianz Championship: At Boca Raton,

Florida, Scott McCarron eagled the par5 18th hole for his third PGA Champions Tour victory in his past 17 starts.

The 51-year-old McCarron hit a 7-iron from 179 yards to 6 feet to set up the eagle, his second of the day after an 80-foot putt on the par-5 seventh. He closed with a 5-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Kenny Perry and Carlos Franco.

McCarron finished at 17-under 199 on The Old Course at Broken Sound.

He opened with consecutive 66s to take a share of the lead into the final round.

EUROPEAN TOUR Maybank Championship: At Kuala

Lumpur, Malaysia, Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay shot a final-round 63 to win his second European Tour title.

Zanotti began the day six shots off the lead at Saujana Golf and Country Club, but a birdie on the 71st hole saw him hit the top of the leaderboard for the first time all week.

He claimed a one-shot victory over American David Lipsky, who closed with a 67.

MONROE, Ga.– Fire officials said former NFL linebacker Quentin Moses and two other people died in a house fire in Georgia.

Monroe Fire Department Chief Keith Glass told local news media that the 33-year-old Moses, 31-year-old Andria Godard and her 10-year-old daughter Jasmine Godard died after the fire started about 6 a.m. Sunday. Moses was found unconscious and moved outside the house.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Moses was a defensive end for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2003 to 2005. He played four seasons with the Miami Dolphins from 2007 to 2010 as a linebacker.
