Super Bowl ads go political in a big way

NEW YORK – Messages about America, inclusiveness – and, yes, even “four years of awful hair” – kept bubbling up in Super Bowl 51 ads from Airbnb, the NFL and a line of personal care products.

But there was still plenty of escapism and light humor for those who weren’t into the politics.

As the New England Patriots edged out the Atlantic Falcons on the field in Houston, Airbnb touted inclusiveness with an ad showing faces of different ethnicities and the copy: “We all belong.

The world is more beautiful the more you accept.”

Coca-Cola aired a previously run ad in the pregame in which people sing “America the Beautiful” in different languages. Even a hair care brand dipped into politics: The “It’s a 10” hair brand indirectly referenced Donald Trump’s famously unruly ’do in its Super Bowl spot.

It’s tough to be a Super Bowl advertiser in during any year. But this year, a divisive political climate has roiled the nation since President Donald Trump took office in January, making it even tougher for advertisers.

Paying $5 million for 30 seconds to capture more than 110 million expected viewers, advertisers had to walk the line with ads that appealed to everyone and didn’t offend. Some were more successful than others.

“Anxiety and politics just loom over this game, so anybody who gives us the blessed relief of entertaining with a real Super Bowl commercial wins,” said Mark DiMassimo, CEO of the ad agency DiMassimo Goldstein.

Several ads aimed for just that.

“When it comes to politics, most brands prefer to stand on the sidelines, for good reason,” said Kelly O’Keefe, a marketing professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. “Brands used to worry about whether their ad could be interpreted as right or wrong. Now they have to worry about whether it will be interpreted as right or left.”

But there still were plenty of ads that walked the line.

An NFL ad conveyed what all advertisers hope the Super Bowl becomes: a place where Americans can come together. “Inside these lines, we may have our differences, but recognize there’s more that unites us,” Forest Whitaker intoned in a voiceover as workers prepped a football field and gridiron scenes played.

Airbnb’s ad was one of the more overtly political, showing a variety of different faces with the tagline “We accept.”

Some thought the ad was a hit. “Kudos to them for making a strong statement,” said O’Keefe. But others, such as Villanova University marketing professor Charles Taylor, thought it didn’t have a clear enough link to the brand and risked coming off as a “purely political statement.”

Some advertisers took the safest route possible by re-airing ads they’ve used before – an unusual, though not unprecedented, move. Coca-Cola, Google and Fiji water aired rerun ads.

SUPRISES

A debut Super Bowl spot by the “It’s a 10” hair care brand introduced its line of men products by joking about Donald Trump’s hair.

Snickers got tons of press by airing a live ad in the third quarter. On a Wild West set, Adam Driver seems to not know the ad is live. The set falls apart (on purpose). “You ruin live Super Bowl commercials when you’re hungry,” the ad’s tagline reads.

McHenry County blacksmithing club unites local hobbyists

nlinhart@shawmedia.com McHENRY – During his contracting days, Jerry Freund occasionally would do some welding and metalworking for his jobs.

“That’s when I knew I really liked blacksmithing,” Freund said. “The problem was I never really had a place to do it at for fun.”

The 81-year-old McHenry resident then got the idea to turn his shed into an area for forging. However, Freund knew he wanted to share the forge

with others.

“I knew there were blacksmiths in the area, but there was no cohesion between them,” Freund said. “So I wanted us all to come together here.”

Sharing his passion with others, Freund started his own blacksmithing club last spring. The club, called Anvil and Hammer, has more than 20 members and meets monthly at Freund’s McHenry home.

At the meetings, club members have been forging their own materials.

LAKE IN THE HILLS – A Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting was awarded to the village of Lake in the Hills for its comprehensive annual financial report for the budget year ending in December 2015.

This is the 16th consecutive year the award, presented by the Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S. and Canada, has been presented to Lake in the Hills, according to a news release from the village.

The certificate is the highest form of recognition for governmental accounting and financial reporting, according to the release.

The village’s report was judged by a panel to meet the high standards of the program such as demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users to read the report, according to the release.

McHenry County residents protest Trump’s recent orders Activists speak out against ban on Muslim travel, limitations on religious freedom

bkeeperman@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – McHenry County activists joined a nationwide movement Sunday in protest of President Donald Trump’s recent executive order.

About 50 protesters gathered Sunday along Route 14 at McCormick Park in Crystal Lake in an effort to show support for equal rights and speak out against both Trump’s recent controversial Muslim travel ban and another leaked executive order regarding religious freedom, which could allow businesses to discriminate against individuals in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community.

Crystal Lake resident Jill Kuhns organized the rally as part of a nationwide movement initiated by the Metropolitan Community Church.

“It’s impactful when you combine it with a nationwide protest, a nationwide statement,” she said. “I think together we stand stronger.”

Kuhns, a member of the LGBT community herself, said these issues would have a direct effect on her family and her civil rights. She said she has a lot to lose.

“I stand to lose my freedom to walk into any business establishment and be served,” she said. “I stand to lose that much dignity and respect. I stand to lose more if it continues – my rights in my relationship with my partner and so forth.”

As speakers shared their stories through a megaphone and protesters waved flags and signs, people who drove down Route 14 shouted and honked their horns. The display was uplifting, said Patrick Murfin, a member of Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation in McHenry.

“This is an expression of how deeply people feel,” he said. “There is a reservoir out here that people don’t expect. I suspect we can do this again whenever

Grass-roots activism historically is the only thing that incites change, he said.

“People who wait for the oppressor to cross a hard line before they act out are always too late,” he said. “It’s critical we speak out now. We have to push back, otherwise we stand by and watch this country go down very dangerous ways.”

People of all ages and demographics were at the event Sunday, including ac-

tivists’ friends and people with kids. For Kate Kutrubis, it’s important to stick up for her fellow humans.

“There are a lot of reasons we need to protect each other,” she said. “It seems to me that there are a lot of people in our system that don’t view fellow Americans as human beings. … I have twin children, and I don’t know what they will turn out to be doing, but I want them to have the same opportunities, and love, and to be able to do what they want to do.”

GOP dinner to feature retired Blue Angels flying team leader

kcraver@shawmedia.com The retired leader of the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels aerobatic team will be this year’s guest of honor at the McHenry County Republican Party’s Lincoln Leadership Dinner.

The speaker for the March 11 dinner, which will be at the Crystal Lake Holiday Inn, 800 S. Route 31, will be retired Capt.

Thomas Frosch, who ended a distinguished 24-year military career with a three-year stint leading one of the world’s oldest and most Thomas respected precision flyFrosch ing teams.

A Michigan native, Frosch graduated in 1992 from the U.S. Naval Academy and earned his flight wings three years later.

He flew the F/A-18 Hornet, participating in multiple carrier deployments

After several years as a test pilot, Frosch attended the Naval War College in 2005 and earned a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies.

After serving as second in command of another deployed air wing, he joined the Blue Angels in 2012 and led it for three seasons until 2015.

Frosch retired last October with more than 4,200 flight hours and 830 carrier landings.

His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Individual Air Medals with Combat “V” devices, and three Navy Commendation Medals – one with Combat “V.” Tickets are $100 apiece, and $50 for Republican precinct committee members. Sponsorships for the event can be bought as well. Cocktails will be served at 5:30 p.m., with the event kicking off at 6:30 p.m.

New shop selling soaps made from goat milk, other natural products

nlinhart@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Annette Gast has been making soap out of goat milk for the past six years.

This led her to start her own business called Silver Prairie Natural Soap Co. “We have a farm in Harvard where we have several Swiss dairy goats that we use the milk for our products,” Gast said. “We strive to make the products fresh and to the highest standards we can.”

Gast said she’s built a customer base over the past several years by selling her soaps at craft shows, home shows and fairs.

However, she said she felt it was time to open her own store in Woodstock.

On Thursday, Gast, along with sales manager Chrissy Huelsman, opened a soap shop at 124 Cass St., the space

Along with goat milk soaps, the new shop carries a full line of products, including coconut milk soap, shea butter soap, natural shampoo soap, shaving soap and body creams. Gast said she has made close to 16,000 soaps in the past year.

“We make very quality soaps, and the goat milk soaps are just so smooth,”

Gast said. “We even have soaps that are specifically formulated for pets.”

Gast lives at the Harvard farm with her husband, Tom, and two daughters, Alexandra, 16, and Pernille, 14, who help with the company.

“Both of my daughters are very involved with helping out with the goats and do a great job,” Annette Gast said.

Alexandra said her responsibilities include milking the goats and setting up for craft shows.

“And I’ve been helping set up this store of late,” she said. “This company has actually really helped me grow as a person. My social skills have gotten better as a result, and I’ve learned the basics of business. This company is part of our family now.”

The soap shop is open six days a week. Its winter hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The soap shop is closed Mondays.

The chess team consists of eight team members from both the east and west campuses, including McHenry West senior John Bicek. This will be Bicek’s second time going to state.

“I’ve been playing chess since I was 3 and decided to get competitive with it,” Bicek said. “I’m actually really excited to be going back to state, and I’m hoping I can do really good.”

McHENRY – The McHenry High School chess team is competing for the state title next weekend.

Coach Christian Rosenzweig, who also is a science teacher in McHenry Community High School District 156, said his team is ranked near the top half in the state to start the competition.

“We’re expecting to end a little bit higher than that,” Rosenzweig said. “We’re shooting for top 20, but it would be really cool if we can get first place.”

The statewide competition has more than 100 teams competing for the state title. The event will start Friday and go through Saturday at the Peoria Civic Center. The tournament is formatted so each player has 55 minutes to make their moves during a match.

With hospital emergency rooms already treating 270,000 eye injuries annually, it is hard to fathom that some individuals are intentionally putting foreign bodies in their eyes that pose the risk of eye damage and vision loss. These cosmetic eye alterations begin with decorative (“costume”) contact lenses that may be so ill-fitting that they scratch the cornea. Using these non-prescribed contacts almost pales in comparison to “silicone iris implants,” which were originally developed for people with damaged or poorly pigmented eyes. However, some risk elevated eye pressure, infection, and glaucoma by having overseas doctors insert them over their natural irises for cosmetic purposes. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) warns against this procedure and others that can lead to serious complications.

Outdoor entertainment area plans move on

Include volleyball courts, bocce ball, horseshoe pits

hprokop@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Huntley village officials have given the OK for Tee 2 Green Indoor Golf to begin the formal development review and approval process for its proposed outdoor entertainment center.

The plan is to create an area with two sand volleyball courts, a bocce ball court, horseshoe pits, an open entertainment area with seating and games, and an area for food and beverage service on a 1-acre parcel located east of the business’s parking lot, according to

village documents.

The building is in Huntley, but the outdoor space is in unincorporated McHenry County.

Marc Tintner, owner of the business at 11173 Dundee Road in the Huntley Tech Center Building, proposed to annex about 1 acre of the property adjacent to the east of the building after trustees encouraged him to do so when the proposal came before them in April.

Tintner also requested the $3,000 capital development fee be waived and the property be rezoned as manufacturing, according to village documents.

At its Committee of the Whole meeting Thursday night, the Village Board questioned Tintner on the type of fence he was using, landscaping and the condition of the parking lot.

“I like the idea, and I think you could make it look really nice, and the area needs it.”

chain-link fence and nets to keep balls and people in.

by Feb. 15 to keep with Tintner’s proposed timeline of opening the outdoor center for spring and summer.

The owner of the property previously said he was not interested in the annexation, Nordman said. However, Tintner said the owner has since indicated he would sign the agreement.

While everyone’s working on their own projects, Freund said he is focused on making more equipment for the forge.

“I had just finished making a hydraulic press, and now I’m in the process of making manufacturing dies for it,” Freund said.

For a more fun project, Freund said he also recently forged his own bottle opener.

“The last club meeting we suggested that everyone bring a bottle opener that they made just to show off how far they’ve come,” Freund said. “It’s neat to see everyone’s different designs.”

One of the club members, Mike Werner of Marengo, said he’s in the process of making a knife out of a railroad spike.

“As a retired firefighter, I’ve always been interested in fire and metal but never had the opportunity to work with it,” Werner said. “Then I saw Jerry Freund’s ad in the newspaper about the club and thought it was interesting, so I got involved.”

In addition to learning how the forging process works, Werner said Freund also showed him how to make his own forge, which Werner now has at his Marengo home.

“But mine is an outdoor forge, so I can’t really use it in the winter,” Werner said. “It’s nice working at Freund’s

“The club is awesome because it gives you a chance to do something you can’t find anywhere else,” said Jeff Freund, Jerry’s oldest son.

The blacksmithing club’s most recent meeting was Saturday, and the

next meeting will be in March on a date still to be determined.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS MEXICO CITY – Mexican bakery magnate Lorenzo Servitje has died at the age of 98 after building his Grupo Bimbo into an international snack and bakedgoods empire that acquired brands like Entenmann’s, Thomas’, Freihofer’s and Stroehmann.

Grupo Bimbo said Servitje died Friday in Mexico City, but did not mention the cause of death.

The head of Mexico’s Business Coordinating Council, Juan Pablo Castanon, called his death “a great loss for Mexico.”

Servitje was born in Mexico on Nov. 20, 1918, the son of a Spanish immigrant who started a bakery.

Servitje launched Grupo Bimbo in 1945 with other partners, starting with

With the Super Bowl still fresh in our minds, it is worth revisiting another homegrown champion of the gridiron – the Golden Tornadoes of 1920.

The Sept. 16, 1920, edition of the Woodstock Sentinel reported on the formation of a new American Legion team in Woodstock – gleaned from the proverbial cream of the crop, including then halfback and future county Sheriff Lester Edinger.

“Eighteen of the 35 names turned in at the meeting have played Army and college football under the best coaches,” the Sentinel reported. “Lester ‘Doc’ Edinger was chosen captain of the team. Everyone is acquainted with Doc’s ability on the gridiron. With his executive ability and four years’ experience at Army football, he is sure to mold together a fighting machine that will plow through all football teams in this section of the country.”

Lawrence Reed, a Legion member who also coached the top-notch Woodstock High School team that year, was tabbed to lead the squad – ably assisted by Clyde Zoia.

The paper proclaimed that the Notre Dame graduate’s experience playing guard in South Bend, Indiana, and for the powerhouse Racine Cardinals of Chicago would be a tremendous boon.

“Woodstock lovers of the pigskin are looking forward to a series of firstclass games,” the Woodstock American reported.

They were right. The team went 7-1, winning all but its initial game against the Rockford Specials – which they later avenged. In fact, the Tornadoes outscored opponents 188 to 25 en route to the division crown.

Large crowds filled the stands at the county fairgrounds to watch them whoop up on the likes of the Chicago Chalmers, Rockford Wolverines, Elgin Mohawks, Beloit (Wis.) A.C. and the powerful Madison (Wis.) Badgers … “among the crack football teams of the Wisconsin League,” according to the Woodstock American.

In a 20-0 pounding of Beloit A.C., the Sentinel writer relays a conversation overhead on the field about Woodstock center Jack Dressell, who wound up scoring a touchdown.

The National Football League didn’t get its start until 1920. And college football still might be

as popular as the NFL today, if anyone could watch it for free. Think about it, Fighting Illini fans – a moment of silence, please – Illinois actually earned trips to Rose Bowls in 1947, 1952 and 1964. And they won – convincingly, no less – 45-14 over UCLA, 40-7 over Stanford and 17-7 over Washington.

But nowadays, a cord-cutter like myself would not be able to watch those games. Samuel Chi of RealClear Sports said college football signed a 12year, $7.3 billion deal to have all of its games – playoffs and all of New Year’s bowl games – televised exclusively by the network through the 2025-26 season. But the partnership actually dates to 2010, when the former Bowl Championship Series moved from Fox to ESPN for its last four years.

According to the Sporting News, broadcast networks will have gone 16 years without airing a single major college football bowl game by the time

the current College Football Playoff TV deal expires in 2026.

The result should not surprise anyone. The Associated Press reported that College Football Championship rematch between Clemson and Alabama attracted 680,000 fewer viewers on TV and online than last year’s game.

It also reported that one-sided games, and the ill-fated decision to play the college semifinal tilt on New Year’s Eve, resulted in a 13 percent drop in TV ratings for New Year’s six bowls as compared with the previous year.

And the storied Rose Bowl? It had the fewest viewers since 1999.

But I think I have a solution. What we need are fewer gold diggers and more Golden Tornadoes.

Lawmakers consider expanding Illinois immigrant protections

CHICAGO – Illinois legislators are proposing to boost immigrant protections statewide in response to President Donald Trump’s executive orders on immigration, a move advocates say would essentially give the state “sanctuary” status.

One proposal says schools, medical facilities and places of worship don’t have to give access to federal immigration authorities or local law enforcement working on their behalf.

Another proposal would limit cooperation and communication between local police and immigration authorities.

“If there was ever a moment for things to move, it is now, when we’re seeing immigrant communities under unprecedented attacks,” said Mony Ruiz-Velasco, a leader of a suburban Chicago immigrant organizing group called PASO. The legislation’s chances of passage are uncertain. Backers of Trump’s moves say he is just fulfilling promises he made during the campaign, and warn that “sanctuary” cities and states risk losing their federal funding.

Reward offered in vandalism of Chicago synagogue

CHICAGO – A community activist is offering $500 for information about the vandal who smashed a window at a downtown Chicago synagogue and put stickers with swastikas on the building’s front door.

Activist Raul Montes told the Chicago Sun-Times that he hopes the reward for what he calls a “hate crime” will prompt someone to provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

Reaction has been divided to a series of immigration-related executive orders signed in Trump’s first days as president, including one designed to allow local law enforcement to investigate, apprehend or detain immigrants living in the country without legal permission. Some states, such

Chicago sued for banning ads in ride-share vehicles

CHICAGO – A lawsuit has been filed against the city of Chicago that seeks to overturn an ordinance banning advertising inside the private cars used by ride-share company drivers.

In its federal lawsuit filed Thursday, the Minneapolis-based technology company Vugo contends that the city’s ban violates the company’s constitutional rights to free speech and equal protection.

Vugo attorney Jeffrey Schwab said the regulations favor the taxi companies at the expense of Uber, Lyft and other ride-share company drivers.

Vugo’s network allows ride-share drivers to display ads, news and entertainment on a tablet attached to the back seats of their vehicles.

South Shore rail line’s 5-year plan worth $1.1 billion

CHESTERTON, Ind. – The board of trustees in charge of the South Shore commuter train line between Chicago and South Bend has approved a five-year plan worth more than $1.1 billion.

The Northwest Indiana Times reported that the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District’s Board of Trustees list includes new rail cars and rerouting the railroad near South Bend International Airport. Other plans include laying two lines of track in some areas, extending the railroad south from Hammond to Dyer and federally mandated safety projects. The Hammond-to-Dyer extension is the priciest endeavor with a $604 million price tag.

Rep. John Cabello, a Republican from Machesney Park, noted that any entities adopting sanctuary status risk losing federal funding. Trump has threatened to strip federal money from sanctuary states.

“We’re kind of playing a dangerous game,” Cabello said of Illinois’ plans, adding that Trump is simply following through on campaign promises.

“He is doing absolutely everything he said he was going to do.”

Democratic Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch of Hillside, who sponsored the schools bill, said his bill would offer peace of mind for immigrants in schools, churches or hospitals.

If all of the efforts are successful, about half of the money for the projects would come from the federal government and the other half from local sources.

White House predicts courts will reinstate travel ban

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Rebuffed in its bid for a quick reversal, the White House said Sunday it expected the courts to reaffirm President Donald Trump’s executive power and reinstate a ban on refugees and travelers from seven predominantly Muslim countries from entering the U.S..

The case promised to extend into Monday at least, when fresh legal filings were due, and observers had no doubt the Supreme Court ultimately will have a say.

The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, in a brief order overnight, denied the administration’s request to set aside a Seattle judge’s ruling that put a temporary hold on the ban nationwide.

The lawsuit by Washington state and Minnesota said Trump’s order harmed residents and effectively mandated discrimination. Their lawyers had until 2:59 a.m. EST Monday to submit briefs opposing the government’s request. The Justice Department then had a 6 p.m. EST deadline to respond.

“We’ll accomplish the stay and will win the case on the merits,” Vice President Mike Pence said.

Members of Trump’s Republican Party scolded him for Twitter attacks on U.S. District Court Judge James Robart, appointed

by President George W. Bush, and accused Trump of stepping over the line that separates the executive from the judiciary. To Trump, Robart is a “so-called judge” whose

“ridiculous” ruling “will be overturned.”

Trump renewed his Twitter attacks against Robart on Sunday. “Just cannot believe a judge would put our country in such peril. If something happens blame him and court system. People pouring in. Bad!” He followed with another tweet saying he had instructed the Homeland Security Department to check people coming into the country but that “the courts are making the job very difficult!”

Pence defended Trump, saying “the president can criticize anybody he wants.” Pence added that he believes the American people “find it very refreshing that they not only understand this president’s mind, but they understand how he feels about things.”

At issue is the legality of a presidential action undertaken in the name of national security. Whatever the outcome and however the case drags on, a president who was used to getting his way in private business is finding, weeks into the jobs, obstacles to quickly fulfilling one of his chief campaign pledges.

“The president is not a dictator,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. “He is the chief executive of our country. And there is a tension between the branches of government.”

The government had told the appeals court that the president alone has the power to decide who can enter or stay in the U.S., an assertion that appeared to invoke the wider battle to come over illegal immigration.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – President Donald Trump said he respects Vladimir Putin, and when told the Russian leader is “a killer,” Trump said the United States has many of them.

“What do you think? Our country’s so innocent?” he told Fox’s Bill O’Reilly in a taped interview aired Sunday on the Super Bowl pregame show.

Trump has long expressed a wish for better ties with Moscow, praised Putin and signaled that U.S.-Russia relations could be in line for a makeover, even after U.S. intelligence agencies determined that Russia meddled in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign to help Trump defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton. Putin has called Trump a “very bright and talented man.”

During Putin’s years in power, a number of prominent Russian opposition figures and journalists have been killed.

In the interview, Trump says, “I do respect him,” then is asked why.

“I respect a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to get along with him. He’s a leader of his country. I say it’s better to get along with Russia than not. And if Russia helps us in the fight

‘La La Land’ dancing to Oscars with DGA win

The Associated Press BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – “La La Land” director Damien Chazelle waltzed off with the top honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards, Saturday. It’s the latest stop on the ebullient musical’s journey to the Oscars, but it wasn’t all song and dance at the annual awards ceremony in Beverly Hills. The evening also took on a more somber, urgent note as many directors and presenters also grappled with President Donald Trump’s refugee and immigration ban.

“I wanted to celebrate the act of dreaming and what art means. Art does connect people and transcend borders,” Chazelle said. “I want to be part of that transnational dialogue of movies.”

At 32 years old, Chazelle, a first-time nominee, is the youngest ever recipient of the DGA feature film award which all but guarantees an eventual Oscar win on Feb. 26.

Rarely has the DGA winner not gone on to win the directing prize at the Academy Awards. “La La Land” recently won the top honor at the Producers Guild Awards and is nominated for a record-tying 14 Oscars.

Earlier in the evening “La La Land” stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling presented Chazelle with the directing medallion. While singing his accolades, like the fact that he shot the musical in 40 days using 35mm film, 93 locations and 1600 extras, Gosling also joked that Chazelle “directed his own birth in a single take.”

Chazelle was up against Barry Jenkins for “Moonlight,” Kenneth Lonergan for “Manchester by the Sea,” Garth Davis for “Lion,” and Denis Villeneuve for “Arrival.” All but Davis are also nominated for the Oscar.

award for “Lion,” however. Starring Dev Patel and newcomer Sunny Pawar, “Lion” tells the true story of an Indian man who was lost as a 5-year-old and 25 years later used Google Earth to retrace his steps to his hometown and his birthmother, not knowing the name of either.

“I had the first half of the film relying on a 5-year-old child who did not speak English,” Davis said. “This movie demanded that the whole cast and crew make this film from their hearts.”

Nate Parker also was nominated for the first time feature award for “The Birth of a Nation” – the only major awards recognition for his film.

The Directors Guild also recognizes excellence in directing in documentaries, live, scripted and reality television and commercials. Ezra Edelman won the documentary award for “O.J.: Made in America” which he called a “labor of labor.”

Other winners included Steven Zaillian for “The Night Of,” Tina Mabry for “An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win,” Miguel Sapochnik for “Game of Thrones” and Becky Martin for “Veep.”

Sir Ridley Scott also was given the 35th Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Christopher Nolan, Billy Crudup and Michael Fassbender. Fassbender described Scott as, “direct, generous, loyal, competitive ... and a bit of a loner who prefers the company of dogs to most people.”

Beyond the self-congratulatory air typical of a Hollywood awards season event, many were compelled to address the refugee and immigration ban as it relates to the entertainment industry and the art it creates. Davis said he’s spoken to “a lot of refugees who have said that this film has given them the courage to find their families.”

Right values of leadership “I want us to be honest with one another,” a new leader on the national stage said late last week.

“We’re on the same team. We share the same mission. Honesty will undergird our foreign policy, and we’ll start by making it the basis of how we interact with each other. . . . Let us extend respect to each other, especially when we may disagree.”

The leader in question was Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and his audience consisted of State Department employees.

Wise as they were, Tillerson’s comments stood out for their rationality and evenhandedness only because they were uttered amid the rapid deterioration of such formerly commonplace standards of political culture. The president of the United States, in particular, continues to operate according to a different standard: insulting allies, intimidating civil servants, improperly threatening recipients of federal funds. Such behavior can only hurt the United States’ standing and undermine the peace abroad.

Tillerson’s remarks may reassure State’s professionals, who were told by President Donald Trump’s spokesman to “get with the program” or quit after hundreds of them signed a letter of dissent over Trump’s harsh executive order on immigration.

Alas, cleaning up after Trump could be a full-time job for Tillerson; the president’s penchant for verbal excess apparently extends even to the prime minister of a close ally, Australia, with whom he had cross words on the phone the other day. He followed that gratuitous clash with a tweet berating a U.S. commitment, inherited from the Obama administration, to resettle up to 1,250 refugees at Australia’s request as a “dumb deal.”

Trump defended his brusqueness toward the Australian prime minister and other world leaders at the National Prayer Breakfast. “Believe me. When you hear about the tough phone calls I’m having – don’t worry about it,” Trump said. “We’re going to be a little tough, folks. We’re taken advantage of by every nation in the world, virtually.”

This is wrong, spectacularly so. The U.S. occupies a privileged position atop the world’s power pyramid, and it benefits from well-designed mutual relationships such as the alliance with Australia.

Like Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis took the opportunity of his arrival to recognize a brightness in America that Trump too often misses.

“You represent an America committed to the common good,” Mattis told the uniformed and civilian members of his department and their families, “an America that is never complacent about defending its freedoms; and an America that remains a steady beacon of hope for all mankind.” He was right, but that beacon remains steady only with constant vigi– The Washington Post lance and work.

To the Editor: This is in response to Brenda Czaya’s letter on Saturday, Jan. 28: “Visit constituents.”

If the letter writer is so upset with Rep. Peter Roskam for “repeatedly refusing to meet face to face with constituents in a town hall,” why do all the people in the 6th district continue to vote for him?

The only way the politicians in the state of Illinois are going to change, and things change for the better of the residents, is to change the people who represent us in Washington and Springfield. If people took a minute to vote, they’d notice there is usually a challenger to the incumbent on the ballot. You need to vote the incumbent out, make change. Maybe even help find a new candidate who can and will do the things they say, not just say things to get elected.

The state of Illinois is a mess and is not going to get better until the residents decide to do something about it. If we leave it up to the pol-

iticians, nothing is going to change.

Maybe instead of “stealth visits,” we need people who will make some noise and do what is best for the everyday citizens of this state.

Clown show

To the Editor: The McHenry County Board is a clown show, apparently. In December, 18 supposedly conservative Republican members voted to raise the county tax levy by $80,000.

Then last week, newly elected board Chairman Jack Franks tried to place a referendum on the ballot of the upcoming municipal election asking citizens if local governments should need taxpayer approval to raise property taxes. This time, 17 members voted against allowing us to simply consider the question.

They even refused to turn on their county-issued iPads and vote electronically, because they didn’t want the people to know how they voted.

Franks seemed to be the only person in the room with any sense.

In an effort to work together, Franks delayed his plan to place a referendum on the ballot about eliminating the office of the Recorder of Deeds because the Republican who holds that office, Joe Tirio, asked him to.

He also asked for more input from the board on a question regarding the board’s size after several members asked him to. Franks has shown a desire to work together repeatedly, yet many board members are clearly partisan hacks who will not work with him to cut taxes and bring voters into the reform process.

We don’t need Springfield and Washington-style obstruction in McHenry County.

Many members of the board have been exposed for the hypocrites they are, while Franks’ consistent advocacy on behalf of taxpayers continues.

Donald Trump’s statement that his preferred replacement for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would provide health “insurance for everybody” surprised those who have followed the contentious debate over the health-care law since its passage in 2010.

Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., Trump’s nominee for health and human services secretary, signaled agreement with the president when he said during his confirmation hearing that a Republican replacement for the ACA should cover more people.

In recent years, however, Republicans have emphasized that gains in insurance coverage should not be the sole barometer by which health-care reform is measured. Rather, they have said, the affordability of that coverage is the key to a better health-care system with fewer uninsured Americans. The ACA’s cardinal sin is its focus on access first, while doing little to address cost.

As a general matter, the conservative focus on lowering health-care costs first is exactly right. Yet Trump was also right to argue that the ACA’s replacement ought to have universal coverage as a goal. Democrats should not be allowed to claim this health-care moral high ground uncontested.

For too long, Republicans have shied away from calling for “universal coverage” because they’ve equated it with the Democratic push for a government-run, single-payer health-care system. But that simply isn’t the case. Market-based reforms can both lower costs and lead to health insurance coverage for more Americans.

Indeed, any health-care reform that can’t compete with the ACA on coverage is sure to face significant political headwinds. It also would make it far less likely that Democrats can be persuaded to support replacement legislation. Perhaps most important, this is a fight that conservatives can – and should – win.

The starting point for this seemingly audacious claim is the fact that the ACA has been a significant failure even for those who value universal coverage above all else. While the law has unquestionably decreased the number of uninsured people in the United States, the Census Bureau reported last year that 29 million remained without health coverage in 2015.

(About a quarter of these were undocumented immigrants or residents of states that opted against the Medicaid expansion.)

In 2015, the Internal Revenue Service found that 19.2 million taxpayers either paid the individual-mandate penalty or received hardship exemptions from that mandate – meaning that tens of millions of people went without health insurance, primarily because it’s too expensive.

Republicans have traditionally been more comfortable talking about the importance of ensuring that every American has access to

quality, affordable health insurance. Indeed, “universal access” has been a relatively noncontroversial way for conservatives to avoid making promises about how market-based health-care reform would affect the number of Americans who remain uninsured after the passage.

The apparent gap between what Trump appears to be proposing (universal coverage) and what Republicans have supported (universal access) isn’t nearly as wide as many analysts think. This gap is both narrow and bridgeable: There are policies that can ensure universal access to health insurance while also putting our nation on the path toward universal coverage.

Any market-based replacement for the ACA should include four key elements to move us toward universal coverage.

First, it should expand access to consumer-directed coverage arrangements such as health savings accounts coupled with high-deductible insurance plans. These products not only help reduce costs but also give consumers greater control over their own care. Such increased control incentivizes individuals to do what consumers do best: make value-based decisions that collectively drive down costs and improve quality.

Second, assistance should go to those who need it but be tailored to their individual situations. Low-income Americans should have access to a more innovative and modern Medicaid program, while the working poor should have access to a tax subsidy to help them afford private plans.

Third, those with pre-existing conditions should have access to mechanisms, such as properly funded high-risk pools, to help them both acquire and afford coverage.

Finally, the federal government should allow for alternative pathways to private, tax-preferred coverage by allowing health plans to be sold across state lines, as well as by giving unions, churches and other civic organizations the opportunity to offer coverage to members.

Taken together, these policies provide a powerful set of tools to both drive down health-care costs and expand coverage to every American.

Trump and the Republican Congress have a remarkable opportunity not only to do away with the ACA and all of its shortcomings but also to put in place reforms that will truly improve our health-care system.

Republicans in Congress should not hesitate to embrace Trump’s call for universal coverage.

Indeed, they should work with the new administration to pass legislation to make this goal a reality.

Aspirin helps heart attack patients Dear Doctor: I just read your column about a daily aspirin regimen, which raised these questions for me: If someone appears to be in the middle of a heart attack, should you try to give them an aspirin? Also, does it pay to keep aspirin in the house just for that purpose?

Dear Reader: To answer your questions, let’s first review how heart attacks happen.

They are caused by a sudden decrease of blood flow to the heart via the coronary arteries.

Although a heart attack can happen suddenly, the risk rises over time if you have vascular damage to the lining of these arteries. That damage, termed atherosclerosis, occurs when cholesterol and other substances form plaque inside the coronary arteries.

When plaque in one of the coronary arteries is disrupted, small particles in the bloodstream called platelets attach to one another at the area of the disruption and form a blood clot. This blood clot causes a sudden lack of blood flow to the muscle of the heart and thus a lack of oxygen to the heart. Without oxygen, that portion of heart muscle will die.

Aspirin targets the platelets at the core of these clots. Platelets clump together at the site of a wound. Usually, that’s a positive.

Any time you get a cut in your skin, these platelets activate and attach to one another to stop the bleeding. Aspirin reduces these platelets’ ability to attach to one another. In heart disease, aspirin works to prevent clots, but also to prevent the clots that have formed from becoming worse.

The first large study to show a benefit from aspirin among people suffering from a heart attack was a 1988 study published in the medical journal Lancet. As part of this study, researchers gave people who recently had symptoms of a heart attack either aspirin or a placebo. The aspirin was given at least 24 hours after the beginning of symptoms, with the median time being five hours after onset.

The measured death rates at five weeks of the 8,587 people who took the aspirin showed a decrease in death from vascular disease of 23 percent, compared to the 8,600 in the placebo group. It is difficult to know how much of this benefit was from the immediate aspirin and how much was from the daily aspirin given for 30 days.

In healthy people taking aspirin, the anti-platelet impact takes effect about 20 minutes after swallowing the compound. But in those who are having a heart attack, the absorption of aspirin decreases, so it may take up to two hours for aspirin to have the same effect. A 2002 study in Israel that was published in the American Journal of Cardiology showed lower death rates among people who were given aspirin sooner rather than later. The earlier users in this study received aspirin on average 1.6 hours before the onset of symptoms.

The American Heart Association recommends immediate aspirin be given at doses of 160 to 325 milligrams to people with symptoms of a heart attack. Because of the decrease in aspirin absorption in those having a heart attack, the recommendation specifies the aspirin be chewed. If someone around you is having a heart attack, the most important thing is getting that person to the hospital.

If you have an aspirin, give it to the person immediately. And, to answer your question: Yes, it would be a good idea to have aspirin in the house for this purpose.

oodstock point guard Matt Shook has one primary goal for himself in the last month of the season.

“Not get hurt again,” Shook said.

The senior missed more than six weeks with a broken bone in his right hand. He returned Jan. 20 for a few minutes of playing time, three hours after being cleared by doctors. He scored four points in a loss to Johnsburg.

Shook returned in full Jan. 24, scoring 12 points in a win over Woodstock North. Then he broke out for 18 points in Tuesday’s win against Marengo, and had 14 more in Thursday’s win over Harvard.

The injury occurred in a game in December, when the ball hit his finger at an odd angle. Shook thought maybe it was jammed and played through it for two games. It turned out to be a broken bone in his ring finger.

The injury was painful. So was having to watch his teammates from the sideline.

“I just like to play with the team,” Shook said. “When I heard it was broken and I can’t play, it made me sad. It’s hard to watch your team play without you.”

Coach Al Baker said it was even harder for Shook because the Blue Streaks (9-15, 4-4 Kishwaukee River Conference) struggled so much during that stretch. At one point, Woodstock lost seven consecutive games in early January.

Shook always was at practice and was like another coach on the sideline during games. Baker called him “one of the smartest players I’ve ever coached.”

“I will use him as an example in the future when other guys get hurt,” Baker said. “(He was) contributing in every way he could. He channeled it in exactly the right way.”

In the past three games, Shook averaged 14.7 points a game – the Streaks won all three. For the season, he is averaging 13.2 points a game. He also leads the team with 4.2 assists a game.

Woodstock boys basketball coach one for the Streaks. The Indians had been tied for first in the KRC, and the loss was only their second in conference play. It was a statement for a Woodstock team that opened conference play 1-4, near the bottom of the standings, before the current winning streak.

Baker said the Streaks made some defensive adjustments in recent

weeks. They also have been shooting well lately, apparent by their 73 points a game during the three-game stretch.

It shouldn’t be overlooked that the recent success coincides with Shook’s return.

“Having Matt, who’s really steady for us in the point guard position, has helped, too,” Baker said. “We’re playing our best basketball of the season right now, which is good.”

Woodstock averages about 56 points a game with Shook in the lineup, and only 51 without him, Baker said. His ability to see the floor and know what all 10 players are doing is one of his biggest assets.

Shook is just happy to be back on the court. With four games remaining in the regular season, he still has time to make some noise. “(We want to) finish the season out strong,” Shook said. “We had a bad stretch, so finish it out strong.”

With the Hawks safely ensconced in second place, this is what much of the focus on the last two months of the season needs to be – tightening up the rookies’ games and making sure they’re ready for the postseason, when the stakes are so much higher, and every mistake is magnified.

“It’s huge for us,” defenseman NIklas Hjalmarsson said. “We can’t just rely on our top guys to get points every single night. It’s tough for those guys, too, to play against other teams’ top D-men all the time. You can’t count

on them to get two or three goals every night. So it helps us out a lot when the whole team contributes.”

Hartman continues to lead the charge, with 12 goals on the season – all of them at even strength – and three game-winners. Of all the rookies, he has exceeded expectations the most, and already has entrenched himself as a key player, a fixture in the lineup who can play top-line minutes or in a checking role, and produce in either situation.

“You don’t really try to come in with too many expectations,” he said. “The first thing was just to make the team.

Then it was to stay as long as possible.

To be able to contribute is nice, and it’s rewarding.”

Time for young guys to step up, show some consistency

jcowley@suntimes.com SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Fred Hoiberg said he has confidence in his young players.

“Absolutely,” the Bulls coach insisted after Sunday’s practice.

That could be tested this week, as the Bulls announced that Jimmy Butler (right heel contusion) and Cristiano Felicio (right leg sprain) were unable to practice, and how much they play on the remainder of this six-game road trip was in doubt.

Felicio is most definitely out for at least the remainder of this week, as he recovers from a leg injury he suffered in Friday’s loss to Houston.

The hope is Butler’s recovery is much quicker, as Hoiberg called him day-to-day.

“Yeah. I sat my [butt] on this bench right here,” Butler said, when asked what exactly he was able to do Sunday.

The good news was Butler went through an injury similar to this current one last season, and didn’t miss any games with it.

His performances definitely dipped, but he played. The bad news was Butler said, “ain’t Michael too much you can do Carter-Williams about it,’’ as far as recovery, and might take the rest-it approach.

“Yeah,” Butler said, when asked if rest was the only real option. “It’s crazy because that probably is what’s best for it. I don’t know if we’re going to do that just yet. But it’s all about how I

feel. I’ll wake up and try to do more on it [Monday] and see how it holds up.

“Right now, it’s not really pain because there ain’t no weight on it, but when you get out there, I’d rate it a six or a seven (on a pain scale). (It) hurts.”

Hoiberg has options.

What kind of options? Well, it seems to depend on the day and the game.

In the loss to HousDenzel ton, Michael CarValentine ter-Williams earned the start for Butler, and possibly played one of his better games in a Bulls uniform, scoring 23 points, grabbing nine rebounds and handing out six assists.

This was the same Carter-Williams who lost his starting job two weeks ago, hinted that he might be better served

elsewhere when he went four games without even getting off the bench, and now has resurfaced.

Then there’s first-round pick Denzel Valentine, who has had quite the rookie roller coaster, and spent the first two games of this road trip playing in the D-League for the Windy City Bulls.

Jerian Grant and Paul Zipser each have caught Hoiberg’s eye lately, as well. Although he won’t commit to who will pick up the slack, he has no concerns that the slack will be picked up.

Hockey players don’t let things go easily. So although Christian Dvorak’s deflection goal in the third period of Thursday night’s victory over the Arizona Coyotes proved meaningless, Ryan Hartman still was kicking himself about failing to block Shane Doan’s shot from the point that led to the tally. Hartman was standing maybe two feet in front of Doan when he fired, yet the shot still somehow Ryan Hartman made it through.

Maybe Hartman can forgive himself after his spectacular, diving break-up of a sure Jamie Benn goal late in the third period of Saturday night’s win in Dallas – a play that basically saved the game. For Hartman, it was even more satisfying than the goal he scored earlier in the game.

“Yeah, it was,” Hartman said. “I missed a blocked shot that ended up in the goal the other night. To be able to kind of do the reverse thing there was definitely nice for me.”

Nice for the Blackhawks, too. Of all the positive signs that came out of a gut-check victory in Dallas – the superb second period, the third-period

fortitude, the brilliant play by Patrick Kane to tie things up – perhaps the most significant was how much the rookies contributed to it.

Hartman had a goal, four shots on goal and the game-saving block. Tanner Kero had a terrific hustle play to set up Hartman’s goal and won his first five faceoffs. And Gustav Forsling, despite some defensive hiccups, was an offensive juggernaut, firing nine shot attempts in the game, including the second goal of his career.

With Hawks general manager Stan Bowman saying earlier in the week that he’s leaning against making a big splash at the trade deadline because he expects the rookies to keep getting better and to keep increasing their roles, it was an encouraging performance.

“That’s huge,” Kero said of the vote of confidence. “They’ve given a lot of roles to young guys this year, and we’re trying to do everything we can to prove we deserve them, and that we belong.

As a group, I think we’ve done a pretty good job of that this year. There’s room for improvement every day, but we’re all trying to earn our spot and stick.”

There still are growing pains, of course. Forsling’s defensive game was as distressing as his offensive game was impressive. His turnover behind his own net led to Tyler Seguin’s goahead goal midway through the third

PATS WIN OT THRILLER Brady leads biggest rally in SB history

pfinley@suntimes.com HOUSTON – Tom Brady led the Patriots to the greatest comeback in the history of the Super Bowl – if not all of American sports – on Sunday.

Playing in the first overtime in the history of the game, former Bears tight end Martellus Bennett drew a pass interference call on De’Vondre Campbell in the end zone, giving the Patriots the ball at the 2-yard line four minutes into the extra session.

Two plays later – eight plays after the Patriots called heads to win the coin flip – James White took a toss right and fell over the end zone line for a stunning 34-28 victory.

Commissioner Roger Goodell indeed presented the trophy to Patriots owner Robert Kraft amid a chorus of boos as loud as any cheer all night. Kraft – whose franchise had feuded with the commissioner in the wake of “Deflategate” – called the Super Bowl win the sweetest yet.

“A lot has transpired in the last two years,” he said, to a roar of Patriots fans, who made up the majority of the 70,807 crowd at NRG Stadium.

Asked if he felt redemption, Brady said that it was “all positive.”

“We all brought each other back,” he said. “We never felt out of it. It was a tough battle.

They’re a great team. I give them a lot of credit. We just made a few more plays than them.”

No team to trail by more than 10 ever had rallied to win the sport’s biggest game.

In the history of the NFL playoffs, teams were 93-0 when leading by 19 or more .

School alum Tevin Coleman caught a six-yard touchdown pass, beating Lincoln-Way Central’s Rob Ninkovich to the right pylon, the Falcons went up, 28-3, in the third quarter.

They didn’t score again.

Brady, who never has overcome such a large deficit, went to work with 8:31 left in the third quarter.

“He was the same as he always is – cool, calm and collected,” receiver Danny Amendola said. “He’s the leader, the general, the best ever.”

He marched the Patriots on the next drive, but it took a whopping 6:25 before White caught a five-yard pass. Stephen Gostkowski’s extra point attempt hit the right upright, however. His 33-yard field goal with 9:48 to play in the game pulled the Patriots within two scores, 28-12.

The Patriots were given new life when, with 8:24 to play, linebacker Dont’a Hightower blitzed and sacked NFL MVP Matt Ryan on third and 1 – why they were throwing is anybody’s guess – and forced a fumble that was recovered by teammate Alan Branch at the Falcons’ 30.

With 5:56 remaining, Brady – who finished 43 for 62 for 466 yards and two touchdowns – found Amendola for a six-yard touchdown. White took a direct shotgun snap for a twopoint conversion, and the Patriots were back within eight.

At their own 10, the Falcons came out throwing, dumping off to Devonta Freeman for a 39-yard gain. Julio Jones’ gorgeous, balletic, leaping catch down the right sideline moved the ball 27 yards to the Patriots’ 22 seemed to seal the game.

But it didn’t.

Rather than run the ball – and the clock – the Falcons kept trying to throw. Ryan took a sack and the Falcons were whistled for a holding penalty, and they had to punt from their own 45 with 3:38 to play.

“We always play aggressive and play to win,” Ryan said.

“We had opportunities as players, and we made some mistakes on the field.”

Brady, having scored 17 straight points, started at his own 9, down eight.

On third-and-10, Chris Hogan caught a 16-yard pass.

Malcolm Mitchell caught an 11 yarder, and then Julian Edelman made one of the great catches in Super Bowl history.

“We followed his lead. He was motivating us the whole game, even when we were down. He just willed us to another victory.”

When the Patriots won the overtime coin toss, the game, for all practical purposes, was over.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn knew his guys never quit, but he did admit his kids wore down.

Brady was a surgeon in overtime, completing five straight passes to take the Pats to the Atlanta 15, and it looked like his sixth to Martellus Bennett would seal the deal, but DeVondre Campbell interfered on the play, setting New England up at the 2. On second down, White took the ball in for the win.

Thirty or 40 years from now, we still will be talking about this one, and it still will be almost impossible to believe how Brady and the Patriots came out on top.

Brady’s pick-6 Pats’ 1st in playoffs since ’86

pfinley@suntimes.com HOUSTON – The last time the Patriots threw a postseason pick-six, the Bears’ Reggie Phillips returned backup Steve Grogan’s pass 28 yards for a score to go up, 37-3, in Super Bowl XX. Robert Alford changed that Sunday.

With 2:21 left in the first half and his Falcons already leading the Patriots by two touchdowns, the fourth-year corner returned a Tom Brady pass 82 yards for a touchdown. He sauntered the last 20 yards with no Patriots player near him.

It marked the second-longest interception returned for a touchdown in NFL history; the Steelers’ James Harrison had a 100-yarder eight years ago at the end of the first half against the Cardinals’ Kurt Warner.

ots offensive possession. They benefited from three-straight Falcons defensive holding flags on three straight third-down attempts that otherwise fell short of the sticks.

Shea! Former Bears linebacker Shea McClellin was flagged for lining up over the longsnapper and trying to hurdle him during the Patriots’ second extra point attempt, Martellus which resulted in a Bennett fumbled hold.

The Falcons moved up 5 yards and made the kick to go up 14-0.

McClellin had blocked a field goal earlier this season the same way. He started the game at outside linebacker, but was swallowed up on the first play, Devonta Freeman’s 37-yard run.

Marty: Martellus Bennett was the Patriots’ second-leading receiver in the first half, catching four balls for 37 yards, but had a memorable mistake.

The former Bears tight end was flagged for a holding penalty on Brady’s 12-yard pass to running back James White that got the Patriots to the Atlanta 3 with 12 seconds left in the half.

The ball game back to the 20, Bennett caught a dumpoff pass for minus-3 yards, and the Patriots had to settle for a 41-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal to trail 21-3 at halftime.

Bennett was one of seven Patriots listed as questionable for the game – he had a knee problem – but he had planned to play all along.

This and that: Lady Gaga repelled from the NRG Stadium roof – which was opened specifically for the halftime show – and performed 13 minutes of

her hits. ... Before Luke Bryan sang the national anthem, three members of the original “Hamilton” cast – Renee Elise Goldberry, Jasmine Cephas Jones and Phillipa Soo – sang “America the Beautiful.” They substituted “brotherhood” for “sisterhood,” which drew immediate applause from Falcons coach Dan Quinn and many in the crowd. ... Former President George H.W. Bush, who was wheeled to midfield alongside wife Barbara, flipped the coin. It marked their first public appearance since they were hospitalized last month. ... Pope Francis recorded a message for Super Bowl fans that aired on the NRG Stadium video board about 90 minutes before kickoff. ... The NFL honored Hall of Famers from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including former Bears star Richard Dent, who waved to the crowd, and the late Walter Payton.

HOUSTON – The New England Patriots’ 34-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons certainly is now the greatest Super Bowl ever played, but, man, it was one weird ride getting there.

Like everything else he does, Tom Brady might have said it best afterward: “It was a [heck] of a football game.”

Strange as it seems, the one thing we thought we were sure about in this Super Bowl LI matchup turned out to be the problem, for the Patriots that is ... or so we thought.

A scoreless first quarter stunned everybody, but after Falcons rookie Deion Jones – who was all over the field all night – ripped the ball out of LeGarrette Blount’s arms at the Falcons’ 29 just 41 seconds into the second quarter, it was like hitting the ignition on a Ferrari.

It was supposed to be the cagey veteran Patriots who would be ready for the moment, while the upstart Falcons with a roster full of starry-eyed kids were likely to get caught up in the moment and learn from the NFL royalty on the other side of the field.

But nobody told the Falcons that.

Jones wasn’t ready to concede anything, saying, “I think the defense played really well. I’m real proud of my guys.

They left everything they had on the field. I couldn’t ask for more from them.”

All that was missing for Atlanta in the first quarter was Julio Jones.

But after the Blount fumble, Ryan hit Jones on successive first-down throws for 19 and 23 yards, and suddenly the Falcons were in business at the Patriots’ 29.

Clippers’ Pierce starts in emotional Boston farewell

BOSTON – Paul Pierce walked back onto the parquet floor one last time, dropped to his knees at center court and gave the Boston Celtics leprechaun logo a big kiss.

“Lucky’s been through it all with me, the ups and downs. He helped me out on a couple of occasions,” the former Celtics captain said. “It’s the last time I’m going to touch this floor as a player. I’m sure I’ll be back as a fan.”

With a deafening cheer and a shout of “Let’s go, Pats,” Pierce was back in Boston on Super Bowl Sunday to give Celtics fans one last chance to celebrate the player who helped the NBA’s most-decorated franchise return to the top of the league.

Restored to the Los Angeles Clippers’ starting lineup by current and former coach Doc Rivers, Pierce was greeted with a long and loud ovation at his introduction, when the new Boston Garden rang out again with his nickname: The Truth.

A highlight video at the first timeout appeared to bring him to tears.

“Fans really showered me with a lot of love,” Pierce said after the Celtics won, 107-102. “You really don’t know what you’ve meant to a team while you’re playing. It hit me a lot tonight, but I’m sure it’s going to hit me a lot more when I’m done playing.”

Tennis umpire hit in face by ball, Canada defaults vs. Britain

OTTAWA, Ontario – In a startling ending to a Davis Cup match, Canada lost to Britain on Sunday when a 17-year-old player, frustrated by missing an easy shot, suddenly launched a spare ball that hit the chair umpire in the left eye.

Britain advanced to the World Group quarterfinals with Kyle Edmund’s 6-3, 6-4, 2-1 default victory over Denis Shapovalov in the decisive fifth match.

Shapovalov had just been broken by Edmund, hitting wide on a simple backhand, when he took a ball out of his pocket and wildly smacked it.

The ball struck umpire Arnaud Gabas of France in the face, and the contact resulted in an automatic default. Gabas put ice under his eye as swelling and bruising began and was taken to Ottawa General Hospital for a precautionary evaluation.

Shapovalov immediately went to check on Gabas after the accident and appeared to be shaken, holding his head in a towel.

“Obviously this is unacceptable behavior from me,” Shapovalov said. “I just feel awful for letting my team down, for letting my country down, for acting a way that I would never want to act.”

“I can promise that’s the last time I will do anything like that,” he said.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Second-ranked Baylor and No. 3 Kansas entered the week preparing for a marquee matchup that could play a role in whether one – or both – earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.

They both ended the week losing at home to unranked opponents, part of a wild Saturday that saw six of the top 10 teams in the AP Top 25 stumble, a reminder that even the country’s best teams are going to have to fight their way to the regular-season finish line.

Baylor, which lost, 73-68, Wednesday at Kansas, lost at home to Kansas State after nearly rallying from 19 down to tie it late. Kansas lost, 92-89, in overtime to Iowa State the same day, snapping a 51-game winning streak at Allen Fieldhouse.

It marked the first time in the 69year history of the AP poll that the Nos. 2 and 3 teams have lost at home to unranked opponents on the same day, according to ESPN Stats.

“You are going to lose some, and you just have to learn from them,” Jayhawks center Landen Lucas said, “so while it’s tough, we just have to make sure we are a better team after this.”

A long list: No. 5 Arizona, No. 7 West Virginia, No. 8 Kentucky and No. 9 Virginia joined the list of Saturday’s upsets.
