Study says games, crafts might protect aging brain

CHICAGO – Even in your 70s and beyond, simple activities including web-surfing, playing bridge and socializing can stave off mental decline, new research says.

Benefits were greatest in computer users and in those without a gene variation linked with Alzheimer’s disease. But even among seniors with that trait, mental decline that sometimes precedes dementia was less common among those who engaged in mind-stimulating activities.

The results don’t apply to costly, computer-based games that purport to keep the brain sharp – those were not studied. The benefits were found from activities that many seniors have access to.

“They don’t have to spend their life savings” on fancy gadgets, said Dr. Yonas Geda, the study’s senior author and a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic’s Scottsdale, Arizona, campus.

The study was published Monday in the journal JAMA Neurology. The researchers noted that the statistical link they found with reduced risk does not prove the activities were responsible.

The study looked at five types of activities that are thought to help keep the mind sharp: computer use; making crafts; playing games including chess or bridge; going to movies or other types of socializing; and reading books. The idea was to see whether these activities could help prevent mild cognitive impairment.

That condition involves problems with memory, thinking and attention that don’t interfere much with daily life but which increase risks for developing Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

Almost 2,000 adults aged 70 to 93 without any memory problems participated. They lived in Minnesota’s Olmsted County, where the Mayo Clinic in Rochester is located. They were asked whether they had engaged in any of the five activities during the previous year and if so, how often.

They were tested for the condition in mental exams at the beginning and every 15 months for about four years. During that time, 456 study participants developed the mild impairment.

Analysis found a protective effect from each activity except for reading books. Study participants who engaged in any of the other activities at least once weekly were 20 percent to 30 percent less likely to develop the condition over the four years than those who never did those activities.

However, when he returned from his latest trip, he had a different experience when he got off the plane.

The Crystal Lake-based surgeon was stopped for questioning Sunday at O’Hare International Airport after returning from Iran.

“For the most part, it was just standard questioning I’ve been asked before, but this time it was a little different,” Heydari said.

“It just felt like the only reason I was pulled out of the line is because of my country of origin.”

A former McHenry County prosecutor was among dozens of lawyers who flocked to O’Hare International Airport over the weekend to assist travelers who were held after President Donald Trump signed an executive order barring the entry of citizens from seven predominately Muslim nations into the U.S. The Chicago-area attorneys were some of the reported hundreds who volunteered their time at airports across the country to help travelers being detained over the weekend.

Lake in the Hills man pleads not guilty in connection with crash that killed CL man

jreiland@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – A Lake in the Hills man formally denied allegations that he was driving under the influence of alcohol in a multiple-vehicle crash that killed a Crystal Lake man.

Hector Chavera, 41, was arraigned Monday in McHenry County court and pleaded not guilty to aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing death, a Class 2 felony; aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm, a Class 4 felony; aggravated driving with a revoked license, a Class 4 felony; and driving with a suspended or revoked license, a

Class 4 felony.

If convicted of the most serious charge, Chavera faces up to 14 years in prison. Chavera is next scheduled to appear in court March 13.

The crash occurred about 5:40 p.m.

Oct. 15 on the Route 31 Algonquin Western Bypass north of Route 62.

Chavera, co-defendant Erik A. Escutia and Alex Misurelli, 35, of Crystal Lake were driving separate motorcycles north on Route 31 when all three crossed the raised center median into oncoming traffic.

Misurelli was struck by a Honda Accord and killed.

The driver of the Honda was a 25-year-old man from Palatine who

was treated at an area hospital and released.

Escutia and Chavera also were taken to hospitals and released.

Escutia and Chavera allegedly were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, according to court documents.

Escutia, 34, of Woodstock, was arraigned Jan. 23 and pleaded not guilty to aggravated driving under the influence causing death and great bodily harm, Class 2 and Class 4 felonies, respectively. He next will appear in court March 6.

Both men are out of McHenry County Jail custody after posting 10 percent of their $40,000 bonds.

Bora said the first hour was “pretty hectic” as they were trying to make contact with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials and simultaneously speaking with family members who were waiting for their loved ones at the airport.

As more lawyers showed up throughout the day, Bora said they “took over” the McDonald’s seating area in order to interview family members and make phone calls.

Once they had determined that everyone who was being held had a green card, they filed writs of habeas corpus and tried to reach out to elected officials for further assistance.

Bora said demonstrators started showing up in increasingly large numbers, and between the groups of protesters and the attorneys, they were able to bring attention to the issue.

“If the protesters hadn’t showed up, the issue wouldn’t have received the attention it deserved,” he said. “It was an atmosphere of people determined to not let this happen.”

Bora said that when speaking with family members, he could tell many were very scared, afraid and unsure of what was going to happen to their loved ones, but they remained appreciative of the attorneys and demonstrators who were in attendance to show their support.

Moving forward, Bora said he plans to continue to assist at O’Hare for free when necessary. He also said he hopes the recent federal court orders are expanded so that the executive order can be looked at more carefully.

“It doesn’t seem that the goal was very well thought out prior to executing it,” he said.

Before the competition, students will be donating gifts to hospice patients at JourneyCare to show appreciation for the community’s support for the class, and working to perfect their presentation, Cook said.

“I think that we’re all going to definitely learn a lot by working with all new perspectives going forward,” Bressett said. “It’s definitely going to be one of the most memorable experiences of our lives getting to compete nationally at a business competition.”

CARY – Seven Cary-Grove High School students will travel to New York for a national business competition this spring.

The school’s Virtual Enterprises International class recently reached its $8,500 goal to fund the trip thanks to donations from the community, said David Cook, who teaches the capstone business class for juniors and seniors.

“We were all really grateful that we can now focus on a lot of things and perfecting this presentation rather than being stressed out with this fundraising,” senior Jack Bressett said.

Cook’s 24 students spent the first half of the semester working on a concept for a unique home furnishings business called Auggie’s. The class simulates the various components of running a business, and students are broken up into teams including sales, accounting and web design.

Marengo chamber starts ‘Queen of Hearts’ raffle The rumors are true! The Marengo Union Chamber of Commerce has started the first of three “Queen of Hearts” raffles.

Drawings are at 7 p.m. every Tuesday night at Trio Grille, 101 Franks Road, Marengo. Tickets can be bought beginning the Wednesday after the Tuesday night drawing.

The winner does not need to be present to win. Rules and regulations are available on our website. The second board and location will be announced once the queen has been found.

Several Illinois politicians also have spoken out on the controversial order.

“Such detention is unacceptable and must be remedied immediately,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, wrote on Medium. com.

Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, also said he was against the order, Rep. Randy saying it was “overly Hultgren broad” and has an “inconsistent” interpretation.

“This has led to unintended consequences, like the barring of legal permanent residents and the rejection of Syrian Christians at the airport, a religious minority that was supposed to

be protected by the executive order,” Hultgren said. “Keeping America first means keeping our principles first. ... We should have our arms open to those who are fleeing oppression and seeking safety, not turning them away at the door.”

“I’m a physician and health care provider, and we take care of people from all over on a daily basis,” Heydari added. “We take care of them without any kind of discrimination such as race, religion or political views. So that’s why I’m at odds with a policy that is trying to turn away refugees and people in need.”

Heydari, a general and bariatric surgeon for Centegra Health System, has dual citizenship in Iran and the U.S. He first left Iran for the U.S. on Jan. 20, 1981 – the day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as the nation’s 40th president – and has lived in Crystal Lake since 1995.

About 10 years ago, Heydari returned to Iran after his father died, and an Iranian passport was required for his travel. Since that trip, Heydari said he’s visited Iran in the past several years to see his 88-year-old mother, who has a hard time traveling because of her age.

“I really was not detained when I got back from that trip, I was just taken for extra questioning,” Heydari said. “Everything was very cordial. It just took an extra 12 to 13 minutes of delay.”

Heydari said officers asked him basic questions, such as where he was in Iran, why he left for Iran and who else was he visiting, among other inquiries.

“I really felt the immigration officers here were polite, and I felt they were very apologetic for taking me to questioning. It was just something they had to do. And like I said, I feel they did so because of where I’m from and the new order,” Heydari said.

Even so, Heydari said he was concerned for a younger woman who also was pulled aside.

“She just reached out to me and said she was kept for about two and a half hours of questioning, but was thankfully released and is back home now,” Heydari said.

Heydari has a wife, who is a U.S. citizen, and has three American-born children. He said he considers his family to be “extremely” American.

The event will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the high school, 1500 Kings Road, Carpentersville, and all of the concert’s proceeds will benefit POMP’s scholarship programs.

“The Music Changes Lives event is a fun way for the DCHS Music Department to showcase our talented students to our community while raising funds for scholarships,” DundeeCrown choir director Lisa Bettcher said.

The afternoon will feature musical performances by the school’s jazz bands, chamber orchestra and chamber choir.

A silent auction and 50/50 raffle also will be held during the event.

She enjoyed teaching her fourth grade students for many years at Johnsburg School District 12, until her retirement in 2012.

A devoted pet lover, she also was an avid reader and cribbage player. Jill greatly enjoyed three exciting trips she was able to take with her cousin and friend, Marilyn Sue Clark. She also took delight in keeping in touch with her many teacher friends after retirement. An active and valued member of Ringwood United Methodist Church, Jill was also a member of the PEO Sisterhood,

Carol was a business owner in Round Lake co-owing the Sinclair Gas Station and Repair Shop in Round Lake Park, the Oaks Drive Restaurant in Round Lake, the R&C Corral Restaurant in McHenry with her husband. She also worked at National Tea in Fox Lake as a checker and in produce and Thornton’s in Round Lake, and Wilson Liquors in Ingleside-all the while plotting her next business endeavor.

For a time, Carol and Dick lived in Birnamwood, WI, where they owned a rustic campground and a restaurant on their property.

Japanese arcade pioneer, ‘Father of Pac-Man’ dies

TOKYO – Masaya Nakamura, the “Father of Pac-Man” who founded the Japanese video game company behind the hit creature-gobbling game, has died. He was 91.

Nakamura, who died on Jan. 22, founded Namco, part of Bandai Namco, in 1955. It started out as just two mechanical horse rides on a department store rooftop but went on to pioneer game arcades and amusement parks.

Bandai Namco, formed in 2005 from a merger of two game companies, confirmed Monday that Nakamura had died.

Pac-Man, designed by Namco engineer and video game maker Toru Iwatani, went on sale in 1980, at a time when there were few rival games, such as Space Invaders. The plucky yellow circle with the huge mouth was a huge hit.

It’s estimated to have been played more than 10 billion times: Guinness World Record has named it the world’s most successful coin-operated arcade game.

The game was nonviolent but just challenging enough to hook players into steering the Pac-Man for hours through its mazes on the hunt for ghostly tidbits.

The iconic Pac-Man adorns T-shirts and other merchandise and inspired animation shows, a breakfast cereal and even the nickname for Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.

BRIEFS Survivor of B-52 crash in Maine dies at age 94 in Nebraska

OMAHA, Nebraska – One of two survivors of a bomber crash that claimed seven people in the unforgiving wilderness of Maine has died more than 50 years later.

Retired Col. Dante “Dan” Bulli went on to continue flying the strategic B-52 bombers during the height of the Cold War after a long recovery from his injuries following the crash. He was 94 when he died Dec. 30 in Omaha, Nebraska, said his son, John.

Bulli was at the controls Jan. 24, 1963, when the vertical tail broke off in turbulence over Maine after the B-52 departed Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts during a simulated low-level bombing run. The bomber crashed into Elephant Mountain in western Maine.

Seven people died. Bulli and the only other survivor, Gerald Adler, spent 20 hours in the bitter cold before being rescued.

Nakamura was a key player in Bandai Namco’s global growth. His pet saying was that his company delivered varied and total entertainment. He took pride in having fun and games for his job.

The company reported Nakamura’s death but would not comment on its cause or other personal details, citing his family’s wishes. A private wake and funeral were held for the family, but a separate memorial is being planned, Bandai Namco said.

BERLIN – Brunhilde Pomsel, a former secretary of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels, has died. She was 106.

Pomsel lived most of her life in relative obscurity until a German newspaper published an interview with her in 2011, prompting a flurry of interest in one of the last surviving people who had access to the Nazi leadership’s inner circle.

Her death was confirmed Sunday to The Associated Press by Christian Kroenes, a director and producer of the film “A German Life.”

In the documentary, Pomsel talks about her three years working for the man responsible for spreading Adolf Hitler’s ideology in newspapers and across the airwaves.

Groups bail out strangers to free poor from jail

CHICAGO – Activists who say too many poor people are unfairly languishing in U.S. jails because they can’t afford to post cash bail are increasingly deploying a new tactic: bailing out strangers.

Community groups are collecting donations from individuals, churches, cities and other organizations in more than a dozen cities, including New York, Chicago, Seattle and Nashville, to bail out indigent prisoners.

Although many bail funds are still in their infancy, they’ve freed several thousand people in the last few years, and the number is growing.

So far, the overwhelming majority of defendants still show up for court even when they have no money on the line, according to the groups. Once free, the defendants are better able to fight their case, often leading to charges being dropped or reduced.

“Many, many people are having their lives ruined pre-trial because they can’t afford to get out of jail,” said Max Suchan, who co-founded the Chicago Community Bond Fund, which had bailed out 50 people as of December.

AFSCME holding vote on whether to authorize strike

SPRINGFIELD – Members of Illinois’ largest public-employee union are voting on whether to authorize a strike as contract talks with Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration remain stalled.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 vote is being held from Monday through Feb. 19.

The vote doesn’t guarantee a strike, but will indicate whether union members want to give their bargaining committee power to walk off the job.

State labor regulators have declared the two-year-old talks at “impasse.” That allows the Republican governor to impose a contract and the union to strike.

Singapore teen submits U.S. asylum claim in court

CHICAGO – A Singapore teenager seeking to stay in the U.S. after his blog posts mocking his government twice landed him in jail made his first appearance Monday in a Chicago immigration court,

recalled.

Mayes resolved her aggravated battery case a few months later and was sentenced to one day in prison, with credit for the 571 days already served.

As the broader bail reform issue has received more attention in recent years – in part because of events such as the death of Sandra Bland, a black woman who died in a Texas jail cell after a traffic stop while waiting help posting bail – opposition has come from bail bondsmen, who charge fees to post a bail bond on someone’s behalf, and some law enforcement officials.

Beth Chapman, president of the Professional Bail Agents of the United States and the star along with her husband of television’s “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” said the community groups mean well but don’t have the resources or expertise to ensure that freed prisoners don’t abscond or reoffend.

“They’re not licensed or trained to deal with the criminal element,” Chapman said. “They’re going to get burned.”

The bail agents organization also argues that eliminating the cash bail system would put the public at risk.

With few exceptions, Chapman said, “People are not in jail because they are poor. They’re in jail because they broke the law.”

CHICAGO – Chicago’s famous Frango chocolate brand is being sold to the city’s most famous popcorn company.

Department store chain Macy’s Inc. announced Monday that it’s selling Frango mints to Chicago-based Garrett Brands, the Oprah Winfrey favorite that owns Garrett Popcorn Shops. The companies didn’t disclose the price.

Macy’s still will sell Frango chocolates at its locations across the country. The chocolates were a signature brand of Chicago’s Marshall Field’s department store, which Federated Department Stores bought in 2005 and converted to Macy’s.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Monday fired Sally Yates, the acting attorney general and a Democratic appointee, after she refused to defend in court his controversial refugee and immigration ban.

The extraordinary public clash over Trump’s most consequential policy decision to date laid bare the discord and dissent surrounding the executive order, which temporarily halted the entire U.S. refugee program and banned all entries from seven Muslim-majority nations for 90 days.

The firing came hours after Yates directed Justice Depart- Sally Yates ment attorneys not to defend the executive order, saying she was not convinced it was lawful or consistent with the agency’s “obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right.”

In a statement, Trump said Yates had “betrayed the Department of Justice by refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States.” He named longtime federal prosecutor Dana Boente as Yates’ replacement.

Yates’ abrupt decision reflected the dissent over the order, with administration officials moving to distance themselves from the policy.

As protests erupted at airports over the weekend and confusion disrupted travel around the globe, some of Trump’s top advisers and fellow Republicans privately noted they were not

consulted about the policy.

At least three top national security officials – Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly and Rex Tillerson, who is awaiting confirmation to lead the State Department – have told associates they were not aware of details of the directive until around the time Trump signed it. Leading intelligence officials also were left largely in the dark, U.S. officials said.

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that despite White House assurances that congressional leaders were consulted, he learned about the order in the media.

Other parts of Trump’s administration were voicing dissent Monday. A large group of American diplomats circulated a memo voicing their opposition to the order, which temporarily halted the entire U.S. refugee program and banned all entries from seven Muslim-majority nations for 90 days.

In a startlingly combative response, White House spokesman Sean Spicer challenged those opposed to the measure to resign.

“They should either get with the program or they can go,” Spicer said.

The blowback underscored Trump’s tenuous relationship with his own national security advisers, many of whom he met for the first time during the transition, as well as with the government bureaucracy he now leads.

While Trump outlined his plan for temporarily halting entry to the U.S. from countries with terror ties during the campaign, the confusing way in which it finally was crafted stunned some who have joined his team.

QUEBEC CITY – A French Canadian known for far-right, nationalist views was charged Monday with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder over the shooting rampage at a Quebec City mosque that Canada’s prime minister called an act of terrorism against Muslims.

Suspect Alexandre Bissonnette made a brief court appearance and did not enter a plea in the attack that left six people dead during evening prayers Sunday. Wearing a white prisoner jump suit, his hands and feet shackled, he stared down at the floor and fidgeted, but did not speak.

The 27-year-old suspect, who has espoused support for the French farright party of Marine Le Pen and had liked U.S. President Donald Trump on his Facebook page, was known to those who monitor extremist groups in Quebec, said François Deschamps, an official with a refugee advocacy group.

“It’s with pain and anger that we learn the identity of terrorist Alexandre Bissonnette, unfortunately known to many activists in Quebec for taking nationalist, pro-Le Pen and anti-feminist positions at Laval University and on social media,” Deschamps wrote on the Facebook page of the group, Bienvenues aux Refugiés, or Welcome to Refugees.

More than 50 people were at the Quebec Islamic Cultural Centre when the shooting erupted. In addition to the six dead, 19 people were wounded – all men. Of the five victims who remained hospitalized, two were in critical condition, authorities said. The dead ranged in age from 39 to 60.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard both characterized the attack as a terrorist act, which came amid heightened tensions worldwide over Trump’s travel ban on seven Muslim countries.

Le Pen, leader of the National Front in France, is known for her anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant positions and has won the endorsement and admiration of white supremacists.

Canada is generally welcoming toward immigrants and all religions, but the French-speaking province of Quebec has had a long-simmering debate about race and religious accommodation. The previous separatist government of the province called for a ban on ostentatious religious symbols, such as the hijab, in public institutions.

Police did not give a motive for the attack.

The victims were businessmen, a university professor and others who had gathered for evening prayers, said Mohamed Labidi, the vice president of the mosque. “’It’s a very, very big tragedy for us,” Labidi said tearfully. “We have a sadness we cannot express.”

He said the victims were shot in the back. “Security at our mosque was our major, major concern,” he said. “But we were caught off guard.”

The shooting took place just before 8 p.m. Sunday.

Senators voted, 56-43, to put Tillerson’s bid to be the nation’s chief diplomat on track for confirmation later this week. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., pressed unsuccessfully for a delay in the vote until Tillerson answered for Trump’s travel ban order.

Trump’s order bars individuals from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Trump has repeatedly said the move is aimed at protecting the nation against extremists looking to attack Americans and Amer-

Although many Democrats – including Schumer – will oppose Tillerson, they’ll need at least several Republicans to join them to derail the nomination. That appeared unlikely, even after two of the Senate’s leading Republican voices on national security voiced concern Rex Tillerson over Trump’s desire for a better relationship with Moscow.

Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina also criticized Trump’s travel ban order and his failure to consult with key federal agencies, including the departments of Justice and Homeland Security.

“We fear this executive order will be-

come a self-inflicted wound in the fight against terrorism,” McCain and Graham said. That elicited an angry tweet from Trump, who called the two GOP senators “weak on immigration” and accused them of “looking to start World War III.” Whether Trump intends to lift U.S. sanctions against Russia will likely be another major theme in the Senate debate over Tillerson’s nomination, which is restricted to no more than 30 hours after Monday’s vote. The president last week was noncommittal, telling reporters at a news conference: “We’ll see what happens. As far as the sanctions, very early to be talking about that.”

But Democrats have doubted Tillerson’s willingness to be tough with Russia. Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said his responses to questions about sanctions against Moscow sounded more like answers a corporate

executive would give instead of a prospective secretary of state.

Trump complained Monday night about the confirmation process, tweeting: “The Democrats are delaying my cabinet picks for purely political reasons. They have nothing going but to obstruct.”

Trump has nominated some of the wealthiest Americans to serve a president, leading to exhaustive ethics reviews. A Senate schedule interrupted by breaks has also delayed the process.

McCain, the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, and Sen. Rob Portman, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, last week warned the White House about easing any punishments on Moscow and vowed to turn the sanctions into law.

U.S. intelligence officials have concluded that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election to help Trump become president.

WASHINGTON – King Abdullah II of Jordan’s visit to Washington this week is testing President Donald Trump’s ability to maintain key Arab alliances while cracking down on immigration from some Muslim countries and possibly moving the American Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

The next few days could provide an indication whether Trump is willing to compromise.

Abdullah, a close U.S. ally, held meetings Monday with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Vice President Mike Pence. Trump and the king were to come face-to-face on Thursday at the National Prayer Breakfast, the White House said. The king also planned to meet with U.S. lawmakers this week.

Abdullah’s trip comes as the Trump administration is embroiled in its first major Mideast controversy, sparked

by Trump’s executive order temporarily halting all refugee admissions and suspending entry to the U.S. for citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries. Although Jordan isn’t among the seven, even U.S. friends in the region fear Trump’s move could embolden Mideast extremists and contribute to a perception that Washington is at war with Islam – which Trump’s administration insists is not the case.

The kingdom, fighting as part of U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State group, is closely watching to see whether Trump fulfills a campaign pledge to move the U.S. Embassy in Is-

rael from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Doing so could trigger widespread protests among Jordan’s massive Palestinian population, potentially even jeopardizing Abdullah’s hold on power.

“The U.S. relationship is central to the internal stability of the kingdom,” said Robert Satloff, who runs the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

“This is really part and parcel of the national security fiber of the kingdom, and building this new relationship is really important to the king.”

This month, Jordan warned in unusually brusque terms that moving the embassy would cross a “red line” and could entail “catastrophic” consequences. Information Minister Mohammed Momani told The Associated Press it would be a “gift to extremists,” threatening U.S. ties with Mideast allies.

The embassy was a prime topic of discussion in Abdullah’s meeting with Pence, officials said. The White House said they discussed Abdullah’s “views on potential changes” and how to make progress on Israeli-Palestinian peace.

The Jordanian Embassy in Washington said the U.S. “committed to working closely with Jordan” on issues related to the conflict.

Jordan serves as the custodian of Islam’s third holiest shrine, located in Jerusalem’s eastern sector. Any U.S. rift with Jordan could spill over to the kingdom’s participation in the fight against IS, a campaign both Trump and Abdullah say they hope to accelerate.

During his campaign, Trump pledged repeatedly to move the American Embassy in Israel, a promise former U.S. presidents have made and broken.

Northeastern University said the hypothesis of economic stress and gun violence doesn’t apply to younger shooters who wouldn’t be thinking of entering the workforce.

Amaral argues that when joblessness is high, “there’s sort of a loss of hope and increasing anger,” Amaral said. “We think there is a kind of anger that gets pent up as these things happen and it comes out as violence.”

And while economic crime goes up with the unemployment rate, the statistics show that the rate of violent crimes such as murder and also rape don’t go up and down with the unemployment rate, Amaral said, citing existing crime statistics. He said that’s the result of a broader and more complex set of factors that affect violent crime rates outside of schools.

Jordan’s king visits D.C. amid refugee concerns

WASHINGTON – School shootings rise when the economy tanks, according to a new study of U.S. schools, even as violent crime in general appears to be unaffected.

Researchers analyzed data from 379 shootings in schools between 1990 and 2013 and found a link between changes in national and local unemployment rates and the frequency of shootings.

Most were targeted attacks – often not fatal – and suicides, according to the study in Monday’s journal Nature Human Behaviour.

Only six percent of the shootings studied were random mass shootings.

Using a complex statistical analyses, researchers found “with very, very high confidence” there are specific time periods when school shootings are higher than others, said study co-author and data scientist Luis Amaral, a physicist and co-director of the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems.

“Above 5.7 percent (unemployment) you start to really detect an in increase,” in the frequency of school shootings, Amaral said.

Some experts not involved in the research did not find the study convincing, in part because different types of gun violence at school – random and targeted, and fatal and non-fatal – often have completely different motivations and root causes.

War on NAFTA will end badly Hostility to supposedly bad trade deals was a main theme of President Donald Trump’s campaign, and he seems to mean business: Not only has he withdrawn the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, but he also confirmed his intention to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. His exact plans for NAFTA, however, aren’t clear.

NAFTA could stand some improvement. The problem is every way to make it better would, from Trump’s point of view, make it worse. That’s why his apparent sincerity is so disturbing.

America’s trade pact with Mexico and Canada reshaped all three economies, creating a highly integrated and competitive economic zone.

The evidence is clear that, in the aggregate, this helped American workers – and not just because NAFTA and other free-trade agreements make goods cheaper and promote U.S. exports. A subtler point is equally important: When a U.S. firm takes advantage of NAFTA by moving jobs abroad, those investments spur demand for workers at home.

This surprising and little-understood benefit isn’t theoretical speculation. On average, the evidence shows, when U.S. manufacturers create 100 new jobs in Mexico, they create roughly 250 new jobs at home. U.S. manufacturing employment has declined over the years – but, as one study of NAFTA puts it, more manufacturing jobs are lost from companies that don’t invest abroad. When U.S. companies build foreign plants, they not only hire more U.S. workers, they also invest and spend more on research and development – at home.

This striving for success in a connected global economy is disruptive: Some workers lose in the process, even as others (in larger numbers) gain.

So the U.S. needs a stronger social safety net, better schools, more support for training and worker mobility, subsidies for low-wage employment and other measures. Sheltering U.S. firms from competition with import barriers, or blocking their foreign investments with threats or other interventions, will make them less competitive – and make Americans overall worse off.

A true “America First” trade policy would combine help for the victims of disruption with efforts to promote, not restrict, international competition and improve U.S. competitiveness.

So by all means, Mr. President, feel free to continue to boast about being a tough negotiator, and to make tweaks to NAFTA while calling them radical changes. And take better care of workers hurt by the agreement. But make no mistake: NAFTA is working. Don’t ruin a good thing.

Russia strikes blow to women

Victims of domestic violence often are helpless to fight back, for reasons of fear, shame and feelings of defeat. A civilized society enacts laws to protect such vulnerable people. The decision by the Russian parliament to change the law to decriminalize some forms of domestic violence is wrong-headed and sends a message brutality in a family is legitimate.

On Friday, the Russian lower house of parliament, the State Duma, approved a bill that decriminalizes domestic battery for first-time offenders. Battery against a family member will be subject to administrative rather than criminal penalty if it does not cause serious medical harm.

Violations can be punished with a fine of up to 30,000 rubles or about $500, police custody of up to 15 days or compulsory community service of up to 120 hours.

Second-time offenses and those

causing serious medical harm still would be criminal violations and punishable by up to two years in prison. This came about because last summer, parliament decriminalized battery among strangers but not among family members, which remained a criminal matter. This irked some lawmakers and the Russian Orthodox Church. They felt it meant a parent could be punished more harshly for slapping a child than a neighbor. According to the Economist, the church said “reasonable and loving use of physical punishment is an essential part of the rights given to parents by God himself.”

The move fits a larger drive

by President Vladimir Putin and some of his allies to instill what they call traditional family values. There’s precious little data, but by all accounts, domestic violence remains a serious problem in Russian society. One Interior

Ministry estimate is 12,000 women are killed every year in assaults by their partners. But there are deep divisions over the issue. In Soviet times, the presence of the state was pervasive, and now some people say the state should keep its nose out of family matters. At the same time, there has been a growing grass-roots awareness, including a social media campaign in Russia and Ukraine last year under the hashtag “#IAmNotAfraidToSpeak.”

What’s most objectionable about the law is the broader message it sends: that a domestic assault that doesn’t break bones or result in a concussion – a beating that could be humiliating, painful and cause deep emotional damage to the victim – should bring little or no penalty from the state. It is hard to see how a healthy society benefits when the most vulnerable are left exposed.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Get off the sidelines

To the Editor: Steve Willson regularly protests any proposed tax increase, but his letter accusing the Crystal Lake Library Board and staff (and by association the City Council) of unethical behavior is outlandish even for him. He demands government officials provide voters with complete, accurate and objective information. Too bad he doesn’t hold himself to the same standards.

Fact: The Library Board is composed of nine Crystal Lake residents, appointed by the mayor with the approval of the City Council. They are responsible for the library’s budget, policies and strategic plan, and they pledge to “provide the highest level of service to all library users.” Despite serving on the board, individual members are just city residents and will benefit from and pay for a new library like any other citizen.

Misleading: Mr. Willson lives in Lakewood, but as an owner of rental properties in Crystal Lake, he does

VIEWS Rich Miller state payment without an actual appropriation. The potential for abuse is mind blowing. Just imagine if Rod Blagojevich could’ve paid whomever he wanted, however much he wanted without any legislative permission.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s position against a lawsuit brought by human service providers also is completely in line with that 2016 Supreme Court decision. The service providers say their signed state contracts mean they should be paid in full even though the General Assembly hasn’t approved the appropriations to do so. Never once has Gov. Rauner said those providers ought to be paid without a formal budget in place.

But there he was last week saying Attorney General Madigan’s motion would “directly harm” state workers while urging her to drop her legal motion. He’s been fighting the state employee unions since Day One and has said he wants to help social service groups, yet he wants state workers paid without an appropriation but doesn’t want social service providers paid the same way?

C’mon, man. I was born at night,

Misleading: Mr. Willson does his own math and claims his answers are the right ones. His calculation of how much it costs to circulate a library item might make sense to him, but there are several ways to make that calculation – and none of them are the “right” one.

I worry that the Good Government Association, of which Mr. Willson is chairman, has similarly self-defined ideas of what is “right” for everyone else. I would prefer they participate in the process (volunteer, attend, study, learn, discuss and decide) rather than proclaim to know what’s best from the sidelines.

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin’s reaction to AG Madigan’s move appeared to fly in the face of common sense: “This decision clearly undermines the legislature’s duty to negotiate a bipartisan solution.”

I was in Decatur to give a speech last week about the prospects for the Senate’s much-touted “grand bargain” when I found out about AG Madigan’s motion. My speech, as initially written, gave that bipartisan effort no better than a 50-50 chance to spur a final deal.

If the attorney general had filed her motion last year after the Supreme Court ruling, we wouldn’t be in this mess today, and Durkin most certainly knows it. Nothing focuses the General Assembly’s bipartisan attention quite so much as a massive crisis.

So, why didn’t she file it last year?

I’m told she wanted to give the General Assembly and the governor some time to work things out. They eventually agreed to a stop-gap budget, so she laid low. But that stop-gap budget expired at the end of December, and the General Assembly left town last week without making significant progress.

There naturally will be widespread suspicions that AG Madigan

acted on behalf of her father. The Illinois Republican Party explicitly made that very point when it claimed the attorney general “decided to put Speaker Madigan’s power politics ahead of hard-working families in an effort to shut down state government.”

That last sentence is the key here.

The governor has done all he could to avoid a shutdown because a shutdown means all the emphasis then would be on quickly passing a real budget and the tax hikes that go along with it to reopen the government’s shuttered doors.

And that means the governor will lose much (or most, or possibly even all) of his beloved “leverage” to force through his various anti-union/ pro-business economic reforms. And that leverage, whether he admits it or not, is the extreme pressure that’s been put on social service providers and the people they serve since this impasse began 18 long months ago.

The attorney general has asked the judge to allow the governor and the General Assembly to delay any order until Feb. 28 to give them time to work out a deal.

Get on it, folks.

The start-up garden consisted of a half-acre plot behind Jennings’ office that in one season produced more than 1,000 pounds of fresh vegetables that were donated to the local food pantries.

The produce then was made available to those in need. The garden is funded strictly on donations and service by volunteers.

Question the timing all you want, but last week’s legal filing by Attorney General Lisa Madigan to stop paying state employee wages without an official appropriation is long overdue and is completely consistent with a 2016 Illinois Supreme Court ruling and with her (and the governor’s) opposition to a similar lawsuit brought by social service providers.

Back in 2015, after the General Assembly and the governor couldn’t come to terms on a budget deal, AFSCME and other unions went to court and asked a judge to force the state to pay state workers even though there was no official appropriation for the salaries. That ruling remains in place today.

But this passage in the Illinois Constitution pretty much says it all: “The General Assembly by law shall make appropriations for all expenditures of public funds by the State.”

So the Illinois Supreme Court ruled in March 2016 on a different case the portion of AFSCME’s contract with the state requiring payment of back wages could not be honored without a proper legislative appropriation. In other words, no appropriation, no payment, even with a contract.

It was a completely reasonable decision. The governor shouldn’t be able to sign contracts and then force

Walgreens slashes offer for Rite Aid

The Associated Press Walgreens substantially lowered its offering price for drugstore rival Rite Aid and, facing resistance from U.S. regulators, raised the number of stores it would be willing to unload to ease monopoly concerns.

The companies initially expected to sell no more than 500 stores, but that was pushed to 1,200 under the new terms announced Monday.

The new offer for Rite Aid is between $6.50 and $7 per share, depending on how many stores need to be divested.

When the deal was first announced in late 2015, Walgreens bid $9 per share, roughly $9.4 billion, for the nation’s third-largest drugstore chain.

The lower price range would cut the deal’s new value to between $6.84 billion and $7.36 billion, based on Rite Aid’s roughly 1.05 billion outstanding shares.

The deadline to complete the deal, which had already been extended once and expired last week, was pushed back to the end of July.

Shares of Rite Aid Corp. tumbled more than 17 percent to $5.74 in midday trading Monday.

The combination of Walgreens and Rite Aid would create a drugstore giant with more than 11,000 stores nationally, even with the sale of more than a thousand stores. That’s a few thousand more than nearest competitor, CVS Caremark Crop.

The drugstore chains said Monday that Walgreens will buy shares of Rite Aid for $6.50 to $7 per share, depending on how many stores they need to divest.

Rite Aid, based in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, runs nearly 4,600 drugstores.

The addition of its locations is expected to give Walgreens more negotiating muscle with drugmakers and other suppliers and to grow its presence in the Northeast and Southern California.

Walgreens also has a sizeable overseas presence, especially in the United Kingdom. It currently runs more than 13,000 stores in 11 countries, including 8,175 in the U.S.

Walgreens said last December – more than a year after announcing the Rite Aid deal – that it would sell 865 stores to rival retailer Fred’s for $950 million due to concerns raised by federal anti-trust regulators.

A Walgreens spokesman said Monday that the company still has an existing deal with Fred’s, but he declined to comment on whether that company had agreed to buy more stores or if another potential buyer had emerged.

Under the revamped deal, Wal-

greens, based in Deerfield, Illinois, will pay $6.50 per share for Rite Aid if it is required to divest 1,200 stores. The price rises to $7 per share if 1,000 or fewer are required.

Walgreens executives told analysts earlier this month that they still expected to close the deal. Executive Vice Chairman and CEO Stefano Pessina said Walgreens had a “very good” relationship with Federal Trade Commission representatives, and the company wasn’t thinking of alternatives to the deal.

“We are working hard to have this deal approved and for the time being we don’t want to even think that the deal could not be approved after so many months,” he told analysts during a Jan. 5 conference call to discuss earnings.

Major deals have come under tough scrutiny because of the potential impact on consumers.

Last week, a federal judge rejected Aetna Inc.’s $34 billion bid for rival Humana Inc. on competitive grounds. The Department of Justice sued last summer to block that deal and a separate insurance acquisition, Anthem Inc.’s $48 billion purchase of Cigna Corp.

Walgreens also said Monday that it lowered the top end of its 2017 earnings forecast by 12 cents per share to account for the deal delay. Walgreens now forecasts adjusted earnings to range between $4.90 and $5.08 per share.

Analysts expect, on average, $5.02 per share, according to FactSet.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Mary Tyler Moore was laid to rest during a private ceremony Sunday at a Connecticut cemetery.

About 50 people attended the funeral and burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield. Police said actress Bernadette Peters was among family and friends who attended.

The gravesite was adorned with a statue of an angel and scores of flowers including white orchids and roses. Actor Jason Robards also is buried at Oak Lawn.

The Emmy-winning actress best known for her TV sitcom roles in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show” died Wednesday. She was 80 and lived in Greenwich.

Miss France crowned Miss Universe in Philippines MANILA, Philippines – A 24-year-old dental student from France won the Miss Universe crown Monday in a pageant held in the Philippines, saying her triumph will make the beauty contest more popular in Europe and help her efforts to put more underprivileged children in school.

Iris Mittenaere from Lille city in northern France buried her face in her hands in shock and joy as the outgoing winner from the Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, crowned her and the crowd erupted in cheers at the packed Mall of Asia Arena by Manila Bay. Miss Haiti, Raquel Pelissier, a 25-year-old survivor of the devastating 2010 earthquake that destroyed her hometown, was named first runner-up, while Miss Colombia, 23-year-old industrial designer and photographer Andrea Tovar, was second runner-up.

As he closed the ceremony, the host, American comedian Steve Harvey, quipped, “I got it right,” referring to his mistaken announcement of Miss Colombia as the winner in last year’s pageant in Las Vegas. He was roundly criticized for the embarrassing error.

“One thing I learned in life, when you make a mistake, you gotta keep on moving forward man, that’s all,” Harvey said.

In her farewell remarks as outgoing winner, a smiling Wurtzbach thanked Harvey for making her “the most popular Miss Universe.” Harvey, laughing, thanked her for making him the “most famous” Miss Universe host.

Mittenaere’s victory was the first by a French contestant in more than 60 years. “I think France and Europe really need a Miss Universe” after failing to win the crown for so long, she said at a post-pageant news conference, when she was asked how her countrymen would receive her victory.

Rapper Azealia Banks has launched another social media beef, and this time her target is Rihanna.

Banks called out the Barbados-born Rihanna after the singer tweeted: “Disgusted!

The news is devastating! America is being ruined right before our eyes!”

The tweet was a response to President Donald Trump’s order to temporarily suspend immigration from seven Muslim majority nations.

People magazine reported that Banks responded by noting that Rihanna isn’t a citizen and can’t vote. Banks added “Stop chastising the president.”

The stars went back and forth on Instagram for hours Sunday. Banks appears to have deleted many of her posts.

Banks has a long history of taking shots at stars on social media, including T.I., Iggy Azalea and Eminem.

Russell Simmons’ RushCard being sold to Green Dot

NEW YORK – RushCard, the prepaid debit card company founded by hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, is being bought by rival Green Dot for $147 million.

Green Dot said Monday that it will buy UniRush, the parent company of RushCard as well as the Rapid! payroll debit card. Simmons started RushCard in 2003 as one of the first prepaid cards to focus on minority customers and charge lower-than-average fees.

Prepaid debit cards are largely used by

the “unbanked,” or those who do not have a checking or savings account and largely rely on cash to pay their bills month to month.

RushCard is perhaps best known for a software upgrade that went haywire in 2015, cutting off more than 400,000 customers from their funds for days and even weeks.

People told of being unable to buy necessities for their children, and customer service lines were tied up for weeks.

Simmons apologized and took personal responsibility, and later used some of his personal fortune to cover customers’ expenses.

“This whole situation has been devastating for them, and we want to make sure they are made whole,” Simmons told The Associated Press in 2015.

Samantha Bee plans counter to White House dinner

NEW YORK – Comic Samantha Bee is throwing an alternative party to the annual White House Correspondents Dinner this spring.

Bee, who hosts TBS’ “Full Frontal” weekly show, said she will welcome journalists and “non-irritating celebrities” to the first Not the White House Correspondents Dinner. It will be held the same April night as the annual event, a fundraiser that mixes politicians, journalists and celebrities.

“It’s a party for the nerds not invited to the real ‘nerd prom,’ ” Bee said, using the real event’s common nickname.

Bee said she and her staff thought of throwing their own party as they sat around depressed in the days after the November election.

New company sends Teslas and Beamers out on service calls

By BRIAN FUNG – The Washington Post WASHINGTON – If you’ve ever signed up for cable, you’re probably familiar with those big, white vans your company usually sends with someone to help install your service. But a new cable company in town is teasing a very different experience. Instead of a corporate truck, what you might see at the curb is a BMW, or perhaps a Tesla.

Running on futuristic electric batteries rather than gasoline, the luxury vehicles reflect the kind of business Layer3 wants to be: An upscale, nextgen TV provider. But the way the company is going about it may not be what you expect. It is betting big on an oldschool approach, one where the traditional, fat cable bundle is king and the customers are TV die-hards who don’t buy into the newfangled streaming services flooding the market.

At a time when Americans are increasingly abandoning their cable companies – flocking to alternatives such as Netflix and Hulu – Layer3’s premise is the big bundle of basic and premium channels that has sustained the industry for decades still is a viable formula.

“We’re the first cable company in ... 10 years to come that’s brand new,” said Jeff Binder, Layer3’s chief executive. “Consumers haven’t had a young innovative company to provide [pay-TV] services to them since the mid-1990s, when Dish and DirectTV came on the scene.”

That notion flies in the face of moves by major players – AT&T, HBO, CBS – that believe major industry change is afoot. These companies have embraced online streaming in a big way, launching flashy stand-alone apps that deliver content over the Internet and to mobile devices in a bid to compete with Netflix. Some, such as AT&T, estimate there could be 20 million U.S. households to win over that don’t subscribe to cable.

For mainstream TV firms, the right response to streaming is to start swimming with the tide. Layer3’s first instinct is to swim in the other direction.

bia – its first official market – and it plans to expand into most major U.S. cities over the next two years. The company’s standard package costs $79 a month and gives you about 150 channels as well as trial subscriptions to HBO and Epix; and optional add-ons include Showtime, Cinemax and Spanish-language content. The vast majority of Layer3’s 250-channel lineup comes in high definition.

In interviews, executives declined to say how many customers have signed up. But they predict there may be as many as 35 million current cable subscribers who will not be lured away by online substitutes such as Dish’s SlingTV or DirecTV Now, the new streaming service from AT&amp;T. But if the industry’s biggest players think streaming is the future, what makes Layer3 think it can survive for the long haul?

One way of answering this is by looking not at how many households are cutting the cord every year, but at how much they earn. It turns out the most avid cord-cutters among us tend to be lower-income Americans. Does your household make $75,000 a year

or more? You’re more likely to have stuck with your cable company than if your annual income is below $20,000.

Those findings from the Pew Research Center may sound familiar to those who’ve canceled their subscriptions because of rising bills. For many Americans, cable is just too expensive. But Layer3 is more interested in the other folks – the more affluent households that absolutely need their pay-TV and still are willing to shell out for it. This market may shrink as cord-cutting grows. But it’s still enormous, and it’s where Layer3 hopes to find its niche.

“It is certainly a counterintuitive strategy,” said Craig Moffett, an industry analyst at MoffettNathanson. “Theirs will be a high cost, and therefore high priced, alternative to a service that many believe is already too expensive. There’s a premium segment in any market, but what remains to be seen is whether they can capture enough of that premium segment.”

To help court those high-end customers, Layer3 is trying to improve on the reputation many cable providers have gained as stodgy, hulking corporations trying to nickel-and-dime

their customers. It isn’t just rolling out red-carpet customer service in the form of fancy cars or a “white-glove” customer experience, such as your ability to text the company whenever you have questions or concerns. It’s also trying to lure subscribers with the promise of next-gen technology embedded in its product.

Layer3’s wireless set-top box supports 4K-resolution video. It offers a curated feed that automatically learns what you like to watch, and it has integration with Facebook and Twitter, along with a few other bells and whistles.

Behind the scenes, the company manages a large backbone network that can pipe content all across the country; by year’s end, Layer3 will control about 24,000 miles of fiber optic cable.

All of this is aimed at raising the bar for cable service, making it so consumers feel they’re actually getting what they pay for – or more.

“It’s no different than comparing an HTC to an Apple,” Binder said. “I think we can out-innovate. I think we can have a much better customer-relationship environment.”

President Donald Trump is arguably Twitter’s most prominent user. But, as many outlets have reported over the past couple of days, the people operating his administration’s Twitter accounts may not be using all their security options to the fullest.

As CNN reported, a hacker specifically wrote to the president with tips on how to lock hackers out of his official Twitter account.

Although your own Twitter account may not be as sought-after as the president’s, the hubbub over the security of the White House’s accounts is a good reminder for all Twitter users to take a spin through their settings. Below are some tips.

recommended to the Trump Twitter team. It’s also a tip Twitter itself recommends in every password reset email. In Twitter settings, there’s an option to require someone to put in a phone number or email address before they see your redacted password.

Verify your log-in requests: Look at the accompanying screenshot, and you’ll see an option to “verify login requests,” which is Twitter’s way of trying to de-jargonize the phrase “two-factor authentication.” Using two-factor authentication means signing in with a special code in addition to your password. The code can come via text, a login notification on your phone or by using an authentication mobile app that automatically will generate

codes for you. Doing any of those things makes your account harder to hack, since it requires someone to both know your password and have access to your phone or text messages.

Yes, it’s a bit of a pain, but it’s worth it.

Also, if you receive your codes by text, don’t reply to them. As my colleague Abby Ohlheiser reported, doing so will post whatever you reply straight to Twitter. Some theorize this is how White House press secretary Sean Spicer ended up sending two apparently nonsensical eight-letter strings to his account two days in a row – although the White House’s official response is that both messages were a “pocket tweet.”

If your name is John Doe and your email address shows up as jd***@gmail.com, it’s probably going to be pretty easy for a hacker to fill in the blanks.

In fact, that’s exactly what WauchulaGhost did with the @VP account. Per the CNN report: He said the email associated with Vice President Mike Pence was easy to guess once you saw the redacted version: vi***************@gmail.com, which WauchulaGhost pieced together as vicepresident2017@ gmail.com.

The @VP account no longer is linked to a Gmail account. Nor is the @POTUS Twitter account, which also was tied to a personal Gmail account – an address the Hill and others say appears to have belonged to White House director of social media Dan Scavino. That’s not illegal, though many companies and agencies have policies against using personal accounts for professional Twitter accounts. It’s also arguably pretty insecure, depending on the security settings enabled on Gmail.

Since that news broke, the account has been changed to link to two different accounts, which appear to have the government “who.eop.gov” domain. As of time of writing, it still did not have the personal information requirement enabled.

Therefore, it’s vital diabetics seek medical treatment.

As for new treatments, some physicians and podiatrists offer laser treatment of toenail fungus. Although some patients report good results, reliable data about the longterm efficacy of laser treatment is scarce.

Dear Doctors: I had toenail fungus two years ago, and my doctor prescribed Lamisil.

It took a long time, but it worked. Now the fungus, which is so ugly, is back again. Why is it so hard to get rid of, and are there any new treatments available?

Dear Reader: Toenail fungus is fairly common, but that’s not much consolation to the 6 million or so people in the United States who have to put up with it. It’s an often-unsightly infection caused by a microscopic organism called a dermatophyte that lives beneath the toenail. More precisely, it colonizes the portion of the nail known as the matrix, which is underneath the cuticle.

Initial symptoms are a yellowish or brownish discoloration of the toenail. As the infection progresses, nails often become thickened, crumbly and malformed. Although the fungus affects the appearance of the nails, it actually lives on the layer directly beneath the toenail. That’s why it’s so difficult to treat.

Your nails are made up of keratin, a tough, fibrous protein. The same hard shell that protects your toes is giving shelter to the fungus. For topical medications to be successful in killing the fungus, they have to be able to reach it.

Anti-fungal creams and liquids are available, both in over-the-counter preparations and by prescription. But because nails are not porous, it’s difficult for the medication to reach the infection in concentrations great enough to kill the fungus. As a result, success rates for topical treatments are low.

Systemic medications, like the Lamisil your physician prescribed, take a more direct approach. You swallow the pill, it gets digested and the medication enters your bloodstream. Your circulatory system delivers the medication directly to the fungus living beneath your toenail and, in the bestcase scenario, kills it.

Then, over three spades, North’s four-club control-bid promises spade support, the club ace and a good hand. Blackwood does the rest. But I accepted any sensible sequences for questions 2 and 3.

4. If West were the dealer with both sides vulnerable, what should he open? Five clubs -- sock it to ‘em, baby!

5. Look at the North hand. a.

South opens one spade; with the opponents silent, how should North plan the auction? He should invite game, either (in two-over-one) by responding one forcing no-trump and rebidding three spades, or (in Standard) by responding two clubs and rebidding a minimum number of spades. b. West opens one no-trump, and East raises to three no-trump.

What should North lead? Diamond three. This needs the least from partner (with luck, only the diamond king) to defeat the contract.

6. Look at the East hand. North opens one no-trump, and South raises to three no-trump. a. What should East lead? Probably the heart seven. b. What should he lead if West doubles three no-trump? Definitely the heart seven. c. West opens two spades, a weak two-bid. After North passes, what should East bid? Four no-trump would be my choice! But almost anything except pass.

The Wolves would have won the Buffalo Grove Regional by a wide margin anyway, but they will need Raupp to bolster their lineup in the next two weeks as they chase a third consecutive state championship.

Raupp, a sophomore at Crystal Lake Central, delivered just what Prairie Ridge coach Lee Battaglia was looking for Monday, with four solid events.

Raupp won the balance beam and took third in the all-around behind teammates Nikki Baars and Kira Karlblom.

“I did pretty well, considering I’m coming back from an injury,” Raupp said. “This is the first meet I’ve hit all four events. I don’t necessarily feel behind. I tried to keep up my strength while I was recovering. I did a lot of conditioning and stretching and flexibility things.”

Raupp learned she had a stress fracture in her back last summer and missed four months. She returned just before the high school season and Battaglia called her his “ace in the hole” before

Baars, a senior at Cary-Grove, won vault, uneven bars, floor exercise and the all-around with 37.575 points. Karlblom, a sophomore at Prairie Ridge,

took second at 36.875, Raupp was third at 36.775 and Maddy Kim, a sophomore at Prairie Ridge, was fourth at 36.3.

“We’ve had [Raupp] such a short period of time, but I knew that when she got better [healthwise] she was going to be an ace in the hole for us,” Battaglia said. “She’s getting healthy. She’s done her job and she’ll be there next week at sectional. She’ll be big.”

The Wolves scored 148.075 to win the regional and advance to the Fremd Sectional on Feb. 7. Barrington (137.475) was second. All finishers in the top five automatically advance, and others can earn at-large berths.

Battaglia was not that upset that the team missed points with four falls on balance beam. Raupp stayed on and won that event.

“We had a very rough beam, but I’m not worried about it because we’ve gone 5 for 5 and scored 38,” Battaglia said. “It was just an off night for them.”

Baars might have won every event if she had stayed on the beam, but she found a bright spot.

“We did pretty well. There’s always room for improvement, especially on beam,” she said. “I guess this would be the best place to have all those falls. Now we go back to the gym and work hard and improve for next week.”

ALGONQUIN – The start to Monday’s Fox Valley Conference girls basketball game between Jacobs and Crystal Lake Central had the feeling of a different sport altogether.

“For a while there, it was like a track meet. That first quarter lasted for what felt like three days,” Jacobs coach Joe Benoit said. “It was like, turnover, jump ball, turnover, missed shot. Once we kind of got in our groove there and settled down, we got some nice scores and stops.”

Jacobs, which never trailed, reeled in its offense and got scoring contributions from seven of eight players, and the Golden Eagles rolled to a 58-38 FVC win against the Tigers, improving to 1112 overall and 7-6 in conference.

Senior guard Carly Sidor led Jacobs with 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting to go with six rebounds, and senior Emily Anderson came off the bench and had 14 points and three 3-pointers. Maggie Grady added 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.

“It was a good team win,” said Anderson, who made all but one of her four 3-point attempts. “It’s all about just coming out early, and trying to get that lead up as much as possible. We’re just focused on trying to get as many wins and getting our confidence up again as we go into the postseason.”

No. 25 Wildcats can taste NCAA tourney

The Associated Press EVANSTON – Bryant McIntosh is close enough he can see it when he closes his eyes. They all can, up and down the coaching staff and throughout the roster. With every 3-pointer, every shutdown performance, they move one step closer to the sweetest of uncharted territory for Northwestern.

At long last, the NCAA tournament.

The Wildcats have been playing men’s basketball for more than a century and never made it to the sport’s marquee event. But McIntosh and company look ready to end that drought, brimming with confidence heading into the final stretch of their increasingly successful season.

“We feel we are really good, but we can be even better, which I think is scary,” McIntosh said. “Yeah, I mean that’s the fun part, going in each and every day and understanding what everyone thinks of this program and kind of allowing that to be a little bit of a fire in our bellies. ... We have to be different, like this, this is over. This isn’t the same Northwestern.”

Big Ten winning streak for the Wildcats since the 1932-33 team matched a school record with seven in a row, and their 7-2 start in conference play is their best since the 1937-38 season.

When the AP Top 25 was released Monday, Northwestern came in at No. 25 for its first appearance in the poll since the 2009-10 season. Coach Chris Collins and the Wildcats (18-4) also began the workweek all alone in third in the conference, a half-game back of co-leaders Maryland and Wisconsin.

“They’re a good team,” Indiana coach Tom Crean said. “I mean, Chris is a great coach. I’ve said that every year I’ve been here; he’s a great coach with a great staff.”

“I just think we’re a tough-minded team,” Collins said. “In my first year, we couldn’t score at all, so we had to play great defense. Then I thought the last two years, our youth, we got beat up a little bit, we had to figure out, playing a lot of young guys. I think this year, having veteran guys that kind of understand our principles, we are a function of each other on both ends of the floor. We are not a one-man band.”

Next is a trip to No. 23 Purdue on Wednesday. The Wildcats also play consecutive games against 10th-ranked Wisconsin and No. 17 Maryland in mid-February that could decide the Big Ten title.

Collins is nervous about the attention that goes along with success – “I worry about it every second,” he said Sunday with a chuckle, “because as a coach you’re always worrying about what could derail what you got going good.” – but McIntosh sounded a reassuring note after the victory against the Hoosiers.

“We’re really hungry ... We know really well it can go as fast as it came,” he said.

Pump was the Tigers’ best 3-point shooting threat, a role Lerum likely will assume with senior Adam Wittenberg. Lerum hit three 3s in Friday’s 46-45 win against Huntley.

“I love these younger kids on our team, and I just want to help them as much as I can,” Pump said. “The game feels faster to them – anything I can do to help them out.”

Loeding was the Wolves’ leader in points, rebounds, steals and blocks. Prairie Ridge (9-0 FVC) leads Jacobs by one game in the conference standings. Wolves coach Corky Card knows they will miss Loeding’s contributions and leadership.

“We’ll do what we do, play well each game and want to have a chance to win at the end,” Card said. “We’ll have the same goals in mind.”

Hot streak: Marian Central’s 50-47 victory Thursday at Carmel gave the Hurricanes their fourth consecutive victory, tying them with Jacobs for the longest current streak in the area.

“It’s great, a big morale boost I’d say,” senior guard Jack Schneider said. “It’s going to translate as we get further down. Our (East Suburban Catholic) conference is tough, so to get four in a row is really good.”

Two of the wins came outside the ESCC – against East Aurora and Johnsburg – but the Hurricanes have moved to 10-8 overall. Marian coach Jim Sarther thinks an emphasis on getting 6-foot-8 senior Sam Ohlrich the ball inside more has been beneficial.

“We’re still building. We’re progressing to where we need to be come February,” Sarther

said. “(Sophomore) Jonny Preston has stepped in as another ballhandler and opened things up for (point guard) Jack (Moscinski), as well.

When he got off to such a good start, teams started keying on him, picking him up full court and showing double teams, and we need to free him up from some of that pressure.”

Tough Trojans: Cary-Grove held off Crystal Lake South, 50-40, last week for its fifth win in six games. The Trojans lost to Prairie Ridge on Friday.

“We’re going in a great direction,” forward Chris Walther said. “We can play better, we can tweak some little things, but we’re in a good direction and want to play our best basketball at end of the season.”

Inside Boys Basketball ATHLETE OF THE WEEK BLAINE BAYER Richmond-Burton, sr., G Bayer gave Marengo all kinds of trouble Friday in the Rockets’ 57-40 victory, which was the Indians’ first loss in the Kishwaukee River Conference.

Bayer scored 32 points in the game and hit 19 of 22 free throws. The 5-foot-10 guard, who passed 1,000 career points this season, also hit three 3-pointers in the game. He is averaging 15.7 points a game.

The victory kept R-B close in the KRC race at 4-2. Marengo and Burlington Central, both 4-1, lead the league and Johnsburg is tied with R-B.

4. Marengo (16-5): The Indians stumbled on Friday against Richmond-Burton, then bounced back with a win over Harvard. They slip one spot this week after the loss but remain tied atop the KRC with Burlington Central.

5. Cary-Grove (10-8): The Trojans have won five of their past seven games, with the only losses coming to Fox Valley Conference-leading Prairie Ridge and second-place Jacobs.

Kerr: Travel ban ‘horrible idea’

PORTLAND, Ore. – Warriors coach Steve Kerr expressed dismay over President Donald Trump’s executive order that bans citizens of seven majority Muslim countries from entering the United States for 90 days.

Kerr, who played five seasons with the Bulls in the 1990s during his 15-year NBA career, spoke about the administration’s travel ban after a 113-111 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night, calling it a “horrible idea.”

“As someone whose family member was a victim of terrorism, having lost my father, if we’re trying to combat terrorism by banishing people from coming to this country, by really going against the principles of what our country’s about and creating fear, it’s the wrong

way to go about it,” Kerr said. “If anything, we could be breeding anger and terror.

“I think it’s shocking. I think it’s a horrible idea. I feel for all the people who are affected. Families are being torn apart, and I worry in the big picture what this means to the security of the world.”

Malcolm Kerr was murdered while he was the American University president in Beirut when Steve Kerr was 18 and a freshman at the University of Arizona.

Kerr has been outspoken on matters including gun control. He also expressed his disappointment when Trump was elected, likening his campaign to “The Jerry Springer Show.”

The White House on Sunday defended Trump’s immigration restrictions as protests spread throughout the country.

CHICAGO – The discussions continue.

Actually, they’ve been taking place more frequently immediately after recent Bulls games.

There’s Fred Hoiberg, gathering his assistant coaches, and having a heartto-heart on whether they should just go ahead and hand Jimmy Butler the keys to being the full-time point guard.

“We have talked a lot about that as a staff, and we are putting the ball in Jimmy’s hands a lot,” Hoiberg said on the topic. “He’s pretty much fourth-quarter, the guy who’s got the ball in his hands, bringing the ball down and initiating offense. He’s also doing it in the first half, especially that first unit now with the lineup change with Jerian (Grant) on the floor, Jimmy has handled a lot of that ball-handling responsibility.”

But technically, it’s still not being the full-time point guard, and there’s reasons that they have been resisting that.

First, there’s no debating that the best pure point guard on the Bulls’ roster is Rajon Rondo. The problem is Rondo is not the best pure point guard for that starting unit. Butler and Dwyane Wade are ball-dominant guys, while Taj Gibson and Robin Lopez are more physical big men rather than athletic big men.

That’s why even when Rondo puts on a point guard show like he did Sunday night against Philadelphia, in which he scored eight points, grabbed five re-

point guard, the second issue that would have to be addressed would be figuring out that fifth starter.

Michael Carter-Williams dethroned Rondo in the starting lineup at the end of December, mostly because of the defense he could provide on the perimeter alongside Butler. Then the Bulls realized how inconsistent Carter-Williams’ outside shot was, so they moved on to Grant.

Now Grant is struggling from the outside.

Ideally, Butler would move over to the point and McDermott would slide into the starting lineup, providing the Bulls with their best outside threat to work with that starting group.

The problem with that, however, is that Butler is already covering up defensive issues that Wade brings to the table, and the last thing Hoiberg needs is Butler having to deal with two below-average defensive players in Wade and McDermott.

That’s the huge problem with this Bulls roster. Too many players who have only one skill set. No wonder Hoiberg is still tinkering with lineups 49 games into the season.

For now, Hoiberg said he would stick with Grant, and that means Butler will patiently wait. “[Heck] yeah, I’ll do it,” Butler told the Sun-Times last week when the point guard duties came up. “That’s not saying I am [a point guard], but I think that if that’s what my team, my coach needs me to do, I definitely think I can handle it.”

Hahn has fans on his side for rebuild

Rick Hahn doesn’t have to sit down for breakfast with the locals at a Bridgeport diner to know what aggravated White Sox fans have endured since he became the organization’s general manager.

All he has to do is sit down over a bowl of cereal with his kids at home.

“I got an 11-year-old,’’ Hahn, with a pained wince, said this weekend during SoxFest. “When the Cubs were up 6-2 in Game 7, he was so upset he couldn’t go to sleep. All he wanted to talk to me about was, ‘When are the White Sox going to be back in the playoffs and how?’

So I’ve got to answer questions in my own house that aren’t so easy.”

For the first time in a while, the Sox are taking the difficult route toward building a winner, eschewing patchwork fixes with an overhaul that will, if successful, likely take a minimum of three years. Hahn warned fans at SoxFest it could take more, saying a typical plan takes five.

As tough as four consecutive losing seasons and no postseason appearances since Hahn’s 11-year-old was a toddler in 2008 are, the majority of fans at SoxFest confirmed to the organization that they are willing to wait through the process that began with the unpleasant parting of Chris Sale, not to mention Adam Eaton. More tough goodbyes are in the works.

Pittman said he attends 20 to 25 games a year, and plans to attend the same this season even though the Sox will be worse on paper than their 78-84 team last season.

“Trust the process,’’ he said.

That could be a slogan for Sox vice president marketing and sales Brooks Boyer.

Dean Reszel of Mokena, a fan since the early 1960s, said he “approves what they are trying to accomplish” showed his trust by recently buying a seven-game ticket plan. He will likely go to a few more games ,including Opening Day. “My only concern will be smaller crowds, perhaps, during the rebuild,’’ Reszel, 61, said, “and will those fans ever

come back even if they become very competitive again?’’

Losing fans is a risk chairman Jerry Reinsdorf must be prepared to take. The Sox in turn went all out promoting prospects at SoxFest, where fans seemed eager to meet new, highly rated prospects such as Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolito and Michael Kopech.

“There is a clear plan and direction for the on-field product and our fans understand the process,’’ Boyer said.

“As Rick has stated, we are closer to the start of the process than the end, but this weekend our fans and media got to meet a number of the young guys and it created optimism.

“As for ticket sales I am cautiously optimistic. Our season ticket renewal is meeting expectations and our group and premium seating business is pacing as anticipated.’’

Promotions, giveaways, good food, relatively easy access to newly named Guaranteed Rate Field and affordable ticket pricing options always have carried much of the freight for bringing fans in. That certainly will be the case in 2017.

Nothing brings them in like a winning team, of course. That’s what everyone, from Hahn’s son to the fans in the upper deck, want.

Patience is the word. It’s going to take some time.

“We know there are difficult days ahead,’’ Hahn said.

“However, I think everything here understands what we’re trying to accomplish for the long term.’’

Pursuit of division title intensifies down stretch

mlazerus@suntimes.com SAN JOSE, Calif. – Would it all have gone down differently last April had Game 7 between the Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues been held at the United Center instead of the Scottrade Center?

Would Joel Quenneville have been able to make a difference had he had the last change instead of Ken Hitchcock?

Would Brent Seabrook’s third-period shot received a friendly hometown bounce instead of clanging off both posts and skittering away?

We’ll never know. But that Game 7 served as a reminder that – although the Hawks have proved time and again that playoff seeding isn’t everything – it sure doesn’t hurt to have home-ice advantage in the postseason. And with 31 games left in the season, and with the Minnesota

Wild up four points with three games in hand on the second-place Hawks, it’s getting close to that time of year when you always need to keep one eye on the schedule, and one on the standings.

“Yeah, I think you start to,” Seabrook said Monday afternoon after the Hawks shook off Brent Seabrook any rust from the threeday All-Star break with a brief practice at SAP Center in San Jose. “It’s just a natural progression when the season starts to wind down and playoff races are heating up and everyone’s talking about it. But it’s the same message we’ve had all year. I might sound like a broken record every time I talk to you, but we’re focused on us. We can look at the standings all we want, but we’ve got to

play well and try to get as many points as we can.”

That starts with Monday’s game against the Pacific Division-leading Sharks, which begins a six-game road trip leading into the team’s six-day “bye week.” In fact, eight of the Hawks’ next nine games are on the road, including two trips to St. Paul to face the Wild. And until those two games, and until the Wild catch up in games played, it’ll be tough to get a real handle on the division race.

Quenneville certainly is paying attention, however. The Hawks’ coach always keeps tabs on the standings, and two third-period collapses in the past two games made his team’s late-season climb that much steeper.

“You’re aware of everything going on in the league and with your own game,” he said. “You value two points, and [we know] we have not many games left to

enhance the position we’re in.”

The good news for the Hawks is they have a sizable lead on Nashville (nine points back, but surging) and St. Louis (12 points back). The question isn’t whether they’ll make the playoffs, it’s whether they can win the division.

“Our main focus is trying to win our division and having home ice through the first and second round,” Seabrook said. “That’s a huge thing in our game.

But it’s also about playing our best hockey we can at the right point, when the playoffs start.”

Notes: Gustav Forsling, recalled from Rockford on Sunday, likely will play Tuesday against the Sharks. Michal Rozsival, who was hurt blocking a shot during Thursday’s practice, will be out two to three weeks. Artem Anisimov and Marcus Kruger were sick Monday and missed practice.

The agent for two Americans who play professional basketball in Iran hopes they will be able to return to the country to finish their season.

Iran is among them, and officials there threatened retaliation against the U.S., including limiting visas to U.S. citizens.

Agent Eric Fleisher said Monday his understanding is Americans with valid visas will be allowed to re-enter Iran, and two American players did Sunday. The visas for Prince and Jones, however, have expired.

SPORTS BRIEFS NEW YORK – The St. Louis Cardinals were stripped of their top two picks in this year’s amateur draft Monday and ordered to give them to Houston along with $2 million as compensation for hacking the Astros’ email system and scouting database, the final and unprecedented step in an unusual case of cybercrime involving two Major League Baseball teams.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred also banned former St. Louis executive Christopher Correa for life as he ruled the Cardinals must give the 56th and 75th draft choices in June to Houston. They must pay the Astros the money within 30 days.

Correa, the Cardinals’ director of baseball development until July 2015, pleaded guilty in federal court last year to five counts of unauthorized access of a protected computer. He was sentenced to 46 months in prison and ordered to pay the Astros $279,039 in restitution.

Even Patriots fans find it hard to root against ex-BC star

The Associated Press BOSTON – The enemies list is long in New England, and it grows with each tweet that dares to doubt Tom Brady’s supremacy or call coach Bill Belichick a cheater.

But there’s one opponent who has escaped the fury of the Foxborough fans, and even has a considerable amount of goodwill in the heart of New England. In fact, it’s hard to find any kind of animosity toward Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who built his reputation – personally and professionally – at Boston College.

“It’s hard to think of anything bad to say about Matt,” said former BC sports information director Chris Cameron, who was in the athletic department when Ryan led the Eagles to a No. 2 ranking in The Associated Press poll in the middle of the 2007 season.

“I think there are many people at Boston College who are die-hard Patriots fans who are somewhat torn. But I can’t think of anyone who will wish any ill will on Matt Ryan.”

Peyton Manning is persona non grata in New England because he had the nerve to win a couple of Super Bowls.

His original team, the Indianapolis Colts, earned the Patriots’ ire for questioning whether the team’s footballs were properly inflated in a 2015 playoff game.

The Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets also were sucked into the two-year “Deflategate” scandal, drawing the wrath of the local fans. And don’t get the Foxborough Bros started on commissioner Roger Goodell, or on ESPN. But Ryan is the rare New England opponent who doesn’t inspire hatred in the area, even as he prepares to face the Patriots in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

At Boston College, a guard shack displays a poster of “Matty Ice,” the nickname Ryan picked up from his Eagles teammates for his ability to remain cool under pressure. In the athletic building, a case is filled with life-sized action shots of Ryan and some of the trophies he won: Johnny Unitas Award, Manning Award, Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year.

Around campus in the run-up to the Super Bowl, they’re telling stories about the humble but talented quarterback who was also a conscientious student and friend.

“He remembers people’s names.

He’s polite to them. There’s really no ego there that I’ve detected, but there’s confidence,” Cameron said. “He’s just a really nice, caring guy. He’s just got that ‘It’ factor.”

A Philadelphia native who was under-recruited coming out of high school as an option quarterback who also played baseball and basketball, Ryan led Boston College to that No. 2 ranking and finished in the top 10 in Heisman Trophy voting. BC finished 11-3 and No. 10 in the nation, beating Michigan State in the Champs Sports Bowl.

But when the Falcons took Ryan third overall in the 2008 NFL draft, Cameron found himself spending hours online responding to comments on an Atlanta newspaper website from fans who were disappointed with the pick.

“I’m not too sure that Atlanta knew too much about Matt,” Cameron said.

“I must have responded to 100 of them.

I just took it so personally. I must have typed ‘Just wait. Just wait. Just wait’ 100 times.”

Despite growing up in Kentucky – a Bengals fan “I guess,” he said – Cameron became a Patriots fan after living in the Boston area for more than a decade but also maintained an allegiance to former BC Eagles in the NFL. (BC linebacker Luke Kuechly played in the Super Bowl last year for the Carolina Panthers.)

Asked about the mixed loyalties in his former stomping grounds, Ryan said in Atlanta last week, “None of my friends have mixed loyalties,” emphasizing the word “my” and drawing a laugh from the assembled reporters.

Count Cameron among them.

“I am a Patriots fan, and I’m rooting for the Falcons. Solely because of Matt,” he said. “On a very personal level, to see someone that good of a person succeed at that level would be incredible.”
