No checks? How can you conduct business?

SPRINGFIELD – “Just mail me a check,” I told a young man who I was doing business with.

The 20-something paused and finally said, “I don’t have any checks. And I don’t have any envelopes or stamps.”

I was flummoxed.

This was no ordinary person. He’s an accomplished entrepreneur and a college graduate.

And he ran a small business.

But he didn’t have a checkbook?

How on earth can someone operate a household, yet alone a business, without a checkbook?

But many millennials simply pay with plastic.

A debit or credit card more often than not will suffice. And they have apps such as PayPal on their phones that allow them to pay in other ways without a pen.

My young friend ultimately dropped by his bank to have a half-dozen checks printed. But before he filled one out, he watched a YouTube video showing him how.

When he shared that with me, I felt old. Really old. For me, getting a checking account was a rite of passage. I grew up on a farm, and when I was 11 years old, I opened an account so I had a mode of paying for the feed and supplies for the calves I was raising.

And writing checks was about responsibility.

I can remember my mother standing over me at the kitchen table as I worked to balance my checkbook. It was hard work – at least for an absent-minded 11-year-old who kept forgetting to enter transactions into his check register.

Mom knew all about this – she spent many hours every week balancing the books for our family’s business.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Americans wrote 17.3 billion checks in 2015, according to a survey released by the Federal Reserve last month. That compares with the 41.9 billion checks written in 2000.

If the trend continues, someday the written check will go the way of the telegram.

Folks will scratch their heads and say, “We used to move money that way?”

Still, there is something to be said for holding a check in your hands. I still remember my first paycheck as a journalist. I was a summer

I assure you, $3.35 an hour never felt so good.

Checks also could give you a glimpse into other people’s lives.

I remember a business near my hometown that would Scotch tape copies of customers’ bad checks behind the counter for all the world to see.

And when I was a reporter at the Quad-City Times, there was a clerk who would hold each person’s pay envelope up to the light to read the check within before distributing the checks to workers. (Most every reporter knew what everyone else was earning because of that chatty clerk.)

When folks tell me they don’t want to make the switch to electronic banking out of security concerns, I always think of that clerk holding checks up to the light.

Checks aren’t always secure either.

Still, checking has become a part of the American lexicon.

Just think about it: Bad check, rubber check, the check is in the mail.

We are raising a generation that will have no idea what these phrases mean.

Future students will ponder these words in Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech: “America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked ‘insufficient funds.’ ” Will those future young scholars marvel at the great man’s eloquence or simply ask: “What’s a check?”

jreiland@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Just more than a week after an estimated 250,000 people took to the streets as part of the Women’s March on Chicago on Jan. 21, participants, including those from McHenry County, have been posed with a question: What happens next?

Kelli Wegener, a Crystal Lake resident and attendee of the march with her 15-year-old daughter, said once the event ended, she realized her work had just begun.

“We must stand up for what we believe in. We have to be our own advocates and do it for those who can’t do it for themselves,” she said, adding that Kelli Wegener, the weekend Crystal Lake resident event was the first time she had attended a march.

About 670 marches in all 50 states and 32 counties, the largest taking place in Washington, D.C., were held to unite people and send a message to newly inaugurated President Donald Trump.

She said she thought it was important to attend the march with

her daughter to remind her daughter of the importance of standing up for yourself, especially as a woman.

“I don’t want her to have to work 20 percent harder than a man to be paid the same. I don’t want her to have to worry if she’s not going to be promoted or passed over because she’s a woman,” Wegener said.

As one of the Democratic candidates vying for a Nunda Township trustee position, Wegener said running for office is one way she can get involved in the community at the local level.

She said she wants people to learn and listen more, especially

PRAIRIE GROVE – Prairie Grove Consolidated School District 46 will have a new superintendent starting July 1.

John Bute will hold the position that Dan Bertrand has been filling part time since former Superintendent Phil Bender retired in December, according to a news release from the district.

Bute, 48, said that after working as the superintendent at Central School District 104 in O’Fallon since 2012, he and his family were looking for something closer to the Chicago area.

“It’s an outstanding district with high-quality staff, high-achieving students and a great community,” Bute said.

“Those are really the factors that pulled me to [Prairie Grove].”

Before working in O’Fallon, Bute was the superintendent at Bureau Valley Consolidated Unit School District 340 in Manlius and Pleasant Hill School District 69 in Peoria. He also has served as a high school and junior high school principal.

“I’m very passionate about helping every student to the best of their abilities,” Bute said.

Bute received his bachelor’s degree in secondary social science education and educational specialist John Bute degrees from Eastern Illinois University, and his master’s in administration and leadership from Northern Illinois University.

He also is a candidate for a doctoral degree in educational administration and leadership from Southern Illinois

The board approved Bute’s contract at its Jan. 10 meeting, according to the news release.

“The board is excited to begin working with our new superintendent and our outstanding faculty, staff and administrative team, to continue our legacy of educational excellence,” board President Joe Ricciardi said in a statement. “We feel Mr. Bute’s considerable experience and the dedication to continuous improvement he articulated during the selection process will serve the district well.”

Bute will be paid an annual salary of $150,000 for each year of his three-year contract, with potential for salary increases based on the evaluation of performance goals, according to his contract.

LOCAL BRIEFS Police: Volo man facing charges of aggravated assault

A Volo man was arrested Saturday evening after a domestic disturbance and an encounter in which he waved a knife at sheriff’s deputies, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived in the 200 block of Terra Firma Lane at 5:19 p.m.

Saturday for a domestic disturbance. Upon arriving, they found Arthur A. Cal, 35, of Volo, was intoxicated and armed with a knife, according Arthur A. Cal to the release.

Cal reportedly told police, “Come and get me,” according to the release. Cal then retreated to a different area in the home. A deputy gained entry to the room and found Cal still armed with the knife. Cal refused to put the knife down, and the deputy used a Taser to subdue him, according to the release.

Cal was uninjured. He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, Class 4 felonies, and remains in the Lake County Jail on $20,000 bail.

Lions Club to hold 18th annual steak fry fundraiser

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – The Crystal Lake Lions Club will hold its 18th annual Winter Steak Fry fundraiser Saturday.

The fundraiser will start at 6 p.m. at D’Andrea Banquets, 4419 Route 14, Crystal Lake. All proceeds from the event will go to the Crystal Lake Lions Club to help fund the Eyeglasses Program, which has provided hundreds of adults and children with glasses and eye exams in the past five years.

More than 500 people have signed up and are expected to attend the Lions Club fundraiser. A ticket costs $40 a person, which includes the price of a draft beer. Also included in the cost of the ticket will be a 16-ounce steak, which attendees will grill themselves.

Last year’s fundraiser raised about $30,000.

Jill McCutcheon, a Crystal Lake resident who also attended the Chicago march with her 15-year-old daughter, said her message after the march is simple and visible: Hate has no home here.

McCutcheon bought a sign with the message on it and placed it in her yard. She plans to get more in hopes of distributing them to members of her neighborhood and community.

She also said she appreciated hearing messages from women who are in the minority.

“I want to find ways to hear, listen and be a part of people’s lives who are [in minorities], not just women,” she said.

Pearl Harbor Navy salvage diver dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN DIEGO – Ken Hartle, who as a Navy diver during World War II had the grim task of retrieving bodies from ships sunk by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, has died. He was 103.

Hartle died Tuesday afternoon at an Escondido, California, center for people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Friday. A reporter was at his bedside with Hartle’s son and daughter three hours before his death.

Hartle may have been the oldest surviving Pearl Harbor salvage diver, said David Ball of San Diego, an officer with the Navy Divers Association.

Hartle and his fellow Seabees worked in the days before scuba diving equipment was commonplace. His heavy canvas diving suit and brass helmet weighed more than 200 pounds.

Japan’s Dec. 7, 1941 surprise attack on Pearl Harbor sank or beached 18 ships. Among them was the battleship Arizona, which went down with 1,177 crew members.

Hartle was working as a civilian ship-fitter at a Navy yard in the San Francisco Bay Area when the war broke, out but he wasn’t allowed to enlist until 1943 because his job was deemed too important to the war effort. Hartle was proud of the work he performed over the next two years, his children said. He risked death by towing away unexploded torpedoes and salvaging ships and planes, first at Pearl Harbor and later from Maine to the Philippines.

He suffered the bends – painful and dangerous bubbles in his bloodstream from improper decompression – and was nearly killed when an anchor chain cracked and spewed metal shards.

But he avoided mentioning one task:

He worked as a prune-picker, a ranch hand and a cook for mining camps and resorts, earned a high school diploma and studied commercial art in college, where he also managed the basketball team.

In late November, British intelligence in Albania learned the American plane had crashed and those aboard were alive. American and British rescue plans were developed.

On Jan. 9, 1943, 10 nurses and 17 medics and crew members boarded a British launch and crossed to Italy.

Three nurses who remained behind in the German-occupied city of Berat made it across in March 1944, riding pack mules to the coast and then a torpedo boat across the Adriatic.

The escape was kept classified for years because some partisans who helped the Americans were shot by Germans and, after the war, those suspected of helping the Americans were executed by Enver Hoxha, Albania’s Communist dictator. He died in 1985.

“For many years, I didn’t say anything about what happened in Albania,” Hayes told The New York Times in a 2015 telephone interview.

MEDFORD, Ore. – Harold Hayes, an Army medic and the last survivor of a group of medics and nurses who spent nine weeks evading capture in Nazi-occupied Albania during World War II, has died. He was 94.

All 30 men and women in the group eventually made it out, but it was kept secret to protect partisan fighters who helped them.

Hayes’ daughter, Margaret Bleakley, told The New York Times that he died Jan. 22 in a hospital in Medford, Oregon, following an operation to remove a blood clot from his leg.

Hayes was among 13 medics, 13 nurses and four crew members to board a twin-engine cargo plane in Nov. 8, 1943, in Sicily expecting a two-hour flight to help wounded troops in Italy.

“It sure wasn’t something any of us expected,” said Hayes in a 2013 interview with the Medford Mail Tribune. “We thought we

would be in Italy for a very short time, then return.”

Bad weather caused the plane to go off course, and it was attacked by German fighters before ducking back into the clouds, finally running low on fuel and landing 25 miles inland.

“The pilot made a skillful landing,” Hayes said. “But it came to an abrupt stop when the wheels bogged down in the mud.

It turned up on its nose and fell back again.”

A 23-year-old crew chief was the only casualty, unable to walk with a knee injury, and the others carried him for much of their 600mile trek out.

Along the way they suffered dysentery, lack of food, lice and the dangers of German patrols and getting caught up in Albania’s civil war.

“We were caught in the middle of all that,” Hayes said. “Some days we walked 24 hours without stopping.”

They were listed as missing in action, and letters went out to

SPRINGFIELD – A federal court monitor is criticizing Illinois for failing to ensure that people with developmental disabilities receive adequate support within their communities for a second year in a row.

The monitor’s annual report, issued last week, says a lack of state funding to raise caregiver wages has created unprecedented shortages of workers who assist developmentally disabled residents when they move out of institutions and into apartments or group homes. The services include everything from eating and hygiene to learning life skills.

The report expanded on a similar finding last year. But the Illinois Department of Human Services said in a statement that it disagrees with the conclusion. The agency insists that the state continues to meet requirements laid out in a federal decree issued in 2011 after civil rights groups sued Illinois for failing to comply with a 1999 Supreme Court ruling that unjustified institutionalization constitutes discrimination.

The decree details what Illinois must do to provide community support for the developmentally disabled.

Springfield museum to open exhibit on New Philadelphia

SPRINGFIELD – A temporary museum exhibit is to open in Springfield showcasing New Philadelphia – the first U.S. town to be founded and registered by an African-American.

The exhibit will be at the Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum through the end of July. The Springfield State Journal-Register reported that the exhibit is a partnership between the Illinois State Museum and the African American History Museum.

caregivers and their families below the federal poverty level. Medicaid matches state wage rates, but states must raise wages first to secure a higher federal contribution.

VANDALIA – A former state Capitol in southern Illinois once again will welcome visitors to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. The Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site will offer music, refreshments and presentations about the 16th president on Feb. 11. Admission is free.

The Vandalia Statehouse was the center of Illinois’ government from 1836 to 1839.

It was the fourth Illinois statehouse and is the oldest surviving capitol building in the state. Lincoln served in the Vandalia Statehouse when he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives. The building was placed on the National Register of

Chicago police chief says he’s had kidney offers

CHICAGO – Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said some of his own officers and citizens alike have offered to donate a kidney to him since he disclosed that he’s on a kidney transplant waiting list.

After nearly fainting at a Friday news conference, Johnson announced that he’s had a kidney condition for decades and now is awaiting a transplant.

He said Saturday that since he made that disclosure, citizens have called 911 to give their information for possibly becoming a kidney donor for him.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Johnson said those kind offers have given him

number of people awaiting services who’ve left institutions or family homes to live on their own or in group residences. But it found Illinois out of compliance because state government has not budgeted sufficient funds to guarantee that disabled people integrating into community life receive personalized care that addresses more than basic needs.

Court orders issued last year ensured the state continued funding service providers at 2015 levels. But federal monitor Ronnie Cohn said these funds were not enough to combat a staffing shortage.

The shortage left providers in 2016 up to 30 percent understaffed and created turnover rates as high as 70 percent, which resulted in uprooted routines, overtime shifts for remaining staff and fewer resources devoted to activities that help disabled people engage with their community.

The report also referenced a Chicago Tribune investigation that found more than a thousand cases of abuse and neglect in state-funded group homes.

But Cohn told The Associated Press in an interview that ensuring quality care goes beyond more closely monitoring providers.

“Even the best providers with the best of intentions can’t manufacture money to keep people working,” Cohn said. “When the money stops moving, it creates problems.”

NEW YORK – President Donald Trump’s immigration order sowed more chaos and outrage across the country Sunday, with travelers getting detained at airports, panicked families searching for relatives and protesters marching against the sweeping measure that was blocked by several federal courts. Attorneys struggled to determine how many people had been affected so far by the rules, which Trump said Saturday were “working out very nicely.”

But critics described widespread confusion and said an untold number of travelers were being held in legal limbo because of ill-defined procedures. Others were released. Lawyers manned tables at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to help families whose loved ones had been detained, and about 150 Chicago-area lawyers showed up at O’Hare Airport after getting an email seeking legal assistance for travelers.

“We just simply don’t know how many people there are and where they are,” said Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project.

Advocates for travelers said the chaos is likely to continue. The executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, Marielena Hincapie, said “this is just the beginning.”

“We’re really in a crisis mode, a constitutional crisis mode in our country, and we’re going to need everyone,” she said. “This is definitely one of those all-hands-on-deck moments.”

On Sunday talk shows, White House officials defended Trump’s actions.

“I can’t imagine too many people out there watching this right now think it’s unreasonable to ask a few more questions from someone traveling in and out of Libya and Yemen before being let loose in the United States,” White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway described the changes as “a small price to pay” to keep the nation safe.

By Sunday evening, officials said nearly all of those who had been detained were free or soon would be, but the status of some travelers was unclear. The released included nine people held at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings’ office said.

The people affected included a woman who was sent back to Saudi Arabia after traveling to Indiana to care for her cancer-stricken mother; a family physician who has lived in the U.S. for two decades who was held for nine hours; and a Minneapolis woman about to become a U.S. citizen who was questioned for 12 hours.

Meanwhile, protests continued across the country Sunday, from smaller airports such as Rapid City Regional Airport in South Dakota to one of the nation’s busiest, Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Demonstrations first erupted Saturday, a day after Trump signed the order banning travel to the U.S. by citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia or Yemen. The president also suspended the U.S. refugee program for four months.

Trump mulls fate of young immigrants protected by Obama

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Missing from President Donald Trump’s blitz of immigration orders was any mention of the fate of hundreds of thousands of young immigrants protected from deportation by former President Barack Obama.

That omission has left immigration advocates hopeful Trump has softened his opposition to what he once derided as “illegal amnesty,” while others say he has quickly abandoned a core campaign pledge.

Trump and Republican leaders in Congress have said they are working on a plan that will address the status of the roughly 750,000 immigrants currently protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. The program allows young people who were brought into the country illegally as children to stay and obtain work permits.

Neither the president nor GOP leaders have disclosed details on their discussions, although both have suggested those currently protected under the program won’t face immediate deportation. Whether they will be allowed to continue to work remains unclear.

Trump said this past week he intends

to reveal a proposal within a month.

“They shouldn’t be very worried,” Trump told ABC News. “I do have a big heart. We’re going to take care of everybody. ... Where you have great people that are here that have done a good job, they should be far less worried.”

Trump’s delay and the tone of his remarks were a striking shift from the campaign, when he promised to quickly end the program and labeled it amnesty.

“We will immediately terminate President Obama’s two illegal executive amnesties, in which he defied federal law and the constitution to give amnesty to approximately 5 million illegal immigrants,” Trump said in August.

His current approach appears to be a concession to Republican leaders in Congress who have called for a less aggressive stand on an issue that has pushed some Latino voters away from the party.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., has argued for a more compassionate approach in dealing with these young immigrants. He has discussed the issue privately with the president and recently said congressional Republicans had been working with his team on a solution.

DACA was arguably the most significant and high-profile change Obama

made to immigration policy, one he said he made only after Congress failed to enact a broader immigration overhaul. The status of the immigrants, some of whom have little or no connection to the country where they were born, has been a focus of advocates’ anxiety and activism since Trump’s election.

The program would be relatively simple for Trump to reverse. The policy does not require an executive order.

As of Friday afternoon, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said it was still processing DACA-related work permits.

Trump’s White House is thought to be divided on the how to handle the issue. Those who have pushed Trump to embrace more restrictive immigration policies, including policy guru Stephen Miller, are said to prefer a harder line.

On the other side are those in the White House considered more moderate, including chief of staff Reince Priebus, who said recently that the White House is planning to work with House and Senate leadership “to get a long-term solution on that issue.”

Under a draft executive order first published by the news site Vox, the government would immediately halt processing new DACA applications, but would allow those who already

have work permits to retain them until they expire sometime over the next two years.

Trump faces pressure from GOP hard-liners, including Iowa Rep. Steve King, who has chafed at signals from Trump aides that immigrants covered

by DACA are not a priority for deportation.

King said Trump risks a backlash from his political base if he doesn’t act swiftly “because it was a clear and definitive promise that he made.”

“And when you hear these kinds of statements coming out of the chief of staff and some of these statements that echo pretty closely out of the speaker of the House, it gives real pause to rule of law conservatives,” he said.

Advocates on both sides are expecting a compromise in which the president perhaps ends DACA and then works with Congress on a permanent solution that allows these immigrants to stay in the country.

Mark Gonzales, the president of the Hispanic Action Network, said Trump’s actions this past week have “definitely shaken up our Hispanic community and the immigrant community in particular.” But he said that he’s confident from Trump and his aides’ rhetoric that young immigrants currently protected

by DACA don’t have to be alarmed.

CHICAGO – The night before Donald Trump’s inauguration, five environmental lawyers filed a federal court brief defending an Obama administration clean-water rule that the new president and his Republican allies have targeted for elimination, considering it burdensome to landowners.

The move served as a warning that environmentalists, facing a hostile administration and a Republican-dominated Congress, are prepared to battle in court against what they fear will be a wave of unfavorable policies concerning climate change, wildlife protection, federal lands and pollution.

Advocacy groups nationwide are hiring more staff lawyers. They’re coordinating with private attorneys and firms that have volunteered to help. They’re reviewing statutes, setting priorities and seeking donations.

“It’s going to be all-out war,” Vermont Law School professor Patrick Parenteau said. “If you’re an environmentalist or conservationist, this is indeed a scary time.”

Trump’s first week in office only heightened their anxieties. He moved

endangered species list.

“They’ve wasted no time in doing bad things,” said Pat Gallagher, director of the Sierra Club’s 50-member legal team, which he said is likely to grow as environmentalists increasingly regard the courts as their best option, even though success there is far from certain.

The Department of Justice, which represents the federal government in environmental lawsuits, declined to comment while the White House did not respond to emails seeking comment. Doug Ericksen, communications director for Trump’s transition team at EPA, said of the environmentalists that he’s “not sure what they think they’re preparing for” but suspects they are stoking fear of Trump as a fundraising tool.

Jim Burling, litigation director for the Pacific Legal Foundation, a nonprofit property rights group that sues regulators on behalf of businesses and landowners, also contended environmental groups were exaggerating the Trump administration’s threat for political and financial gain.

The government bureaucracy is entrenched, Burling said, and “who happens to occupy the White House hasn’t made that much difference.”

OSWEGO, N.Y. – When the Nine Mile Point reactor first went online, Richard Nixon was president, the Beatles still were a band and Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima weren’t yet bywords for the hazards of nuclear power.

Almost 50 years later, New York state is betting big on the future of Nine Mile Point, one of the nation’s two oldest nuclear plants.

The state is putting up $7.6 billion in subsidies to ensure that the plant and two other upstate nuclear plants stay open, part of New York’s strategy to lean on nuclear energy as it ramps up renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydroelectric.

But even as Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration embraces nuclear power upstate, it’s moving to shutter the Indian Point nuclear plant about 30 miles north of New York City.

To critics, Cuomo is making a political calculation that favors jobs and energy upstate, and safety and the environment downstate.

“These things have an expiration date, and they’re really pushing it,” said Sue Matthews, who worked for contractors building Nine Mile Point’s second reactor in the 1980s. She said her opposition to the plant makes her the “most hated” woman in town. “Everyone here depends on that place – the jobs, the property taxes. They can’t afford to close it.”

Nuclear plants around the nation are at a similar crossroads, with more closures likely as owners become reluctant to spend increasingly large sums operating aging plants.

Located on the shores of Lake Ontario, Nile Mile Point is a wonder of Cold War-era engineering, with miles of colored pipes and wires snaking through long corridors to a cathedral-sized turbine room. Anyone getting close to the reactor is fitted with a small dosimeter to monitor exposure, and must step inside a phone-booth sized radiation scanner before and after.

The plant’s first reactor went online in 1969, sharing the nation’s-oldest honor with the Oyster Creek plant in New Jersey.

Immediately adjacent to Nine Mile Point is a second, 42-year-old nuclear plant, FitzPatrick, which was slated to close before Cuomo’s nuclear bailout package was approved. A third, the 47-year-old Ginna nuclear power plant, is located just east of Rochester.

Closing the plants would devastate an upstate community that, like most of upstate New York, has struggled over the decades. Oswego County has one of the state’s highest unemployment rates – 6.7 percent last month, compared to 4.5 percent statewide. The two plants here employ 1,600 people and pay far above the area’s average salary.

“These aren’t just normal jobs,” said Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow, a Republican. “These are high-paying jobs, the people who eat in our restaurants, shop in our stores, who make our community what it is.”

N.Y. bets big on aging nuke plants

More important, where aren’t the trees? A lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is helping some of the world’s cities answer both questions in an attempt to make them more pleasant places to live and work.

In an effort to enhance the critical role trees play in urban environments – providing cooling shade, alleviating air and noise pollution, and easing the effects of climate change – the school’s Senseable City Lab has developed an online platform that maps out the canopy in some major cities to make it easier for urban planners and ordinary citizens to see where more are needed.

The project, called Treepedia, uses Google Street View to create what the MIT team calls the Green View Index.

Trees block shortwave radiation and increase water evaporation, creating more comfortable microclimates and mitigating air pollution, lab director Carlo Ratti said. But they also just make people feel better, Ratti said, channeling Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson’s biophilia theory that humans innately seek out connections with nature.

“We as humans have a natural willingness and desire to be in green spaces,” he said.

The interactive website gives bird’s-eye views of 15 cities, with trees represented by green dots. Users can zoom into a particular neigh-

borhood or individual street to see ground-level images.

The City of Lights apparently isn’t the city of trees. Of the cities mapped so far, Paris scores lowest with a Green View Index score of 8.8 percent.

North American cities tend to score higher than European cities.

Singapore, however, ranks the highest with a 29.3 percent score, slightly ahead of Vancouver, British Columbia.

The other cities mapped so far are Amsterdam; Boston; Frankfurt, Germany; Geneva, Switzerland; London; Los Angeles; New York; Sacramento, California; Seattle; Tel Aviv, Israel; Toronto; and Turin, Italy.

More cities are being added.

“In the future, the goal of this project is to start a conversation so that cities can see how they compare with one another and how they can learn from each other,” Ratti said.

He also hopes ordinary citizens will use the website to check out their own homes, and advocate with municipal officials for more trees in their neighborhoods.

The project was inspired by the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the Future of Cities, which included increasing tree canopy cover on a list of top 10 urban innovations.

“We hope that this endeavor will give citizens a greater appreciation of their city’s green canopy and appreciate that the green canopy can assist in responding to climate change,” council manager Alice Charles said in a statement.

A trade war we don’t need Until a few days ago, the U.S.-Mexico relationship was a strong one that benefited both countries. In the first week of his term, President Donald Trump seemed determined to change that – and for no good reason.

After decades of economic integration, the United States and its southern neighbor have established a valuable trading relationship exchanging $1.4 billion in goods every day. Mexico is the second-largest foreign market for U.S.-made products. Trade and investment between the two nations create wealth for both nations, and for innumerable American companies, workers and consumers, all of whom would be harmed by a trade war. Moreover, Mexico has become a valuable partner in promoting liberal values, having institutionalized multi-party democracy and steadily increased economic freedoms within its borders. As it has matured into a middle-class nation, the flow of Mexicans north has reversed, with more returning home in recent years than migrating to the U.S. In deference to this mutually beneficial relationship, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has strained against provocation to get along with Trump. He invited him to a meeting in Mexico City last year. He was planning a visit to Washington next week to look for constructive cooperation.

Then, boom. Trump planted a stick of dynamite under a structure that leaders of various parties in both nations have been carefully constructing for decades.

And for what? The president first announced this week that he intended to proceed with construction of an expensive and unnecessary border wall, fulfilling a campaign promise based on misunderstandings of both the extent of illegal immigration and the best way to deal with it. Then Trump revived his pledge that Mexico would finance its construction. The humiliation was too much to bear for Peña Nieto. The Mexican president canceled a scheduled meeting with Trump.

At that point, wiser heads still could have defused and de-escalated. Instead, White House press secretary Sean Spicer announced that the president is considering a new tax on Mexican imports to pay for his gratuitous wall. Spicer, without providing many details, suggested the tax would raise some $10 billion a year. Depending on its design, such an imposition could indeed hurt Mexico. But it also would likely act as a tax on American consumers, who would pay for the wall by paying higher prices for Mexican-grown tomatoes, Mexican-built cars and other Mexican-imported products.

U.S. officials should reach out and seek to repair the week’s damage. It took the United States nearly a decade to recover from the economic wreckage of the last recession. A wealth-destroying trade war with one of America’s closest partners would threaten that longsought recovery.

To the Editor: Regarding the Jan. 18 letter, “Words of wisdom from dear friend, veteran” in which the writer quotes his veteran friend, “Never, never underestimate the stupidity of the American electorate.”

Several times in It’s Your Write, I’ve opined that conclusions need to be based on evidence, reason, rationality and critical thinking. Stanford University and the University of Michigan jointly sponsor a research organization, American National Election Study.

There were 5,415 individual completions to their 2012 Direct Democracy Study. The results: The top 25 percent of the voters got 90 percent of the questions correct (Grade A-). The middle 50 percent of the voters got slightly more than one-half of the questions right (typically an F grade on knowledge tests in school.) The

bottom 25 percent scored less than chance, a lower score than just guessing without reading the questions. Q.E.D. Pat yourself on the back if you know that Q.E.D. stands for Quod Erat Demonstrandum, with which Euclid concluded most of his proofs. It means “what was to be proved” and signifies the proof has been concluded. Note: You can live a happy and useful life even if you did not know what Q.E.D. meant, but now you do. Your life has been enriched with new knowledge. Education enriches your life even if it does not enhance your income.

Long on rhetoric

To the Editor: In light of all of the campaign rhetoric from the Republican establishment wing of the McHenry County Board, it was shocking

and disappointing to see them sit on their hands when given an opportunity to act on property tax reform. Board Chairman Jack Franks is a proven tax fighter, and his reforms would go a long way toward unwinding the mess that the long-serving Republican majority has gotten us into.

Illinois has the dubious distinction of having the highest median property tax rate in the nation, while McHenry County is saddled with property tax rates that are among the 10 worst in the state.

Their financial mismanagement continues to make our county less attractive to new residents and businesses alike.

The people voted ranks into office to bring about change, yet the tax-and-spend Republican supermajority seems perfectly happy with the status quo.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

When 27-year-old reporter William W. Price came to Washington from South Carolina in 1895, there was no such thing as a White House beat. Then Price, working for the Washington Evening Star, began calling himself a “White House correspondent” and getting stories about President Grover Cleveland, and a beat was born. Today, White House reporters are promising to hold the new president, like his predecessors, to account. But relations are tense, fueled partly by the administration’s desire to weaken a group it has called an “opposition party” and partly by misunderstandings about the beat.

Myth No. 1 The daily briefing is a waste of time.

Myth No. 2 White House reporters needlessly cling to old traditions.

Conservative columnist Cal Thomas recently dismissed the media as one of the “entrenched bureaucracies ... that are reluctant – even hostile – to change.” It’s true that in the past, the White House Correspondents’ Association has fought certain changes, such as President John Kennedy’s decision to televise his news conferences.

But today’s reporters have worked with administrations of both parties to find better ways – collaborating on travel schedules, cost-cutting measures and which charter flights reporters use. Contrary to what presidential aides

have suggested, the correspondents’ association has not blocked access to any accredited reporters and has not kept them out of the briefing room. White House chief of staff Reince Priebus seems to think the 49 assigned seats in the room are set in stone and doled out to long-established media outlets. In fact, 20 of the 49 seats are held either by news organizations that didn’t exist when the seats were first assigned in 1981, including Yahoo News, SiriusXM, the Washington Examiner, Real Clear Politics, Fox News, BuzzFeed and Politico.

Myth No. 3 It’s the most glamorous beat in Washington.

Merriman Smith, the most famous White House correspondent for four decades, from Franklin Roosevelt to Richard Nixon, was often offered less-grueling beats by his bosses at United Press International. He declined. Smith saw the beat as “glamorous and important” and the only one that “sated [his] competitive zeal,” according to a monograph about him. That perception hasn’t changed. Reporters still fight for the White House assignment, with its extensive foreign travel, frequent stories on Page One and all the airtime a TV correspondent could crave.

But there’s often nothing splendid about the work. There are the hours spent at White House stakeouts in the rain, snow and heat, never certain if a visiting lawmaker will deign to come out. Or the nights spent in vans on pool duty (a tedious job in which reporters take turns recording the comings and goings for the rest of the press corps that couldn’t be on site).

Myth No. 4 Reporters are always with the president, so he has no privacy.

A few days after his win in November, Donald Trump went to dinner with his family and ditched the small pool of White House reporters at Trump Tower, causing journalists to wring their hands. Meanwhile, cable TV was filled with Trump surrogates indignant that reporters, as they contended, wanted to be at the table along with Trump’s kids.

The reaction reflected a misunderstanding of how a pool operates. Reporters are not asking to be at the table with family members. They are asking to know where a president is if he leaves the White House grounds. No one knows when a crisis will develop; no one knows when a motorcade will be in an accident; no one knows when a president will take ill; no one knows when an aide will whisper to the leader of the free world, as one did on Sept. 11, 2001, that “America is under attack.”

In recent years, former White House press secretaries (Ari Fleischer and Mike McCurry), former White House reporters (Ron Fournier and James Warren) and political partisans (Newt Gingrich and Sean Hannity) have embraced this theory. “They’re a waste of time,” Fournier wrote. “They are redolent with tradition and an air of media entitlement,” Warren commented in Vanity Fair. Reid Cherlin, a former aide to President Barack Obama, called them “a worthless chore for reporters, an embarrassing nuisance to administration staff.”

It is true that the briefings can be boring.

Ida Tarbell wrote about those early briefings in 1898, noting that they were conducted by presidential secretary John Addison Porter around a table at 10 p.m. “They gather around Secretary Porter for a kind of family talk, he discussing with them whatever of the events of the day he thinks wise to discuss.” Then and now, no reporter would ever base any story solely on what was said in the briefing.

But it is still vital to a democracy that a representative of the president present himself every day. Everyone benefits when the government has to face that daily ordeal. It was at a White House briefing that Press Secretary Ron Ziegler on April 17, 1973, was forced to backtrack on months of Watergate evasions and declare his previous statements “inoperative.”

It was at White House briefings that press secretaries for George W. Bush had to try to explain why no weapons of mass destruction had been found in Iraq. And it was at White House briefings that Jay Carney was forced to explain the problems with the healthcare.gov website.

Health benefits found in nuts Dear Doctor: Will eating nuts really reduce my risk of heart disease, cancer and other diseases, which a new study has suggested? If so, how many should I be eating?

Dear Reader: Nuts are fruits. They consist of a hard shell and an edible seed.

To answer your question, I’ll use the definition of nuts to refer to the varieties we typically eat, although some, like the peanut, are not truly nuts. Nuts are a good source of fiber and contain antioxidants such as vitamin E, healthy polyunsaturated fats and magnesium. These aspects of nuts could reduce the risk of vascular disease and cancer and possibly rates of diabetes.

A 2013 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at nut intake per week among both male and female health professionals. The researchers followed 173,000 people for a period of 30 years and looked at how many of those people died. They found a marked decrease in death rates among those study participants who ate nuts. They also found the benefit was dose-dependent, meaning the more nuts people ate a week, the smaller their chance of death during the study period. Compared to people who rarely ate nuts, those who ate nuts once a week had an 11 percent decrease in death rate, while those who ate nuts daily had a 20 percent decrease in death rate.

A much larger recent study, published in the journal BMC Medicine, combined multiple studies and looked at rates of death from heart attacks, strokes and cancer. The studies were from the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia and included a total of more than 819,000 participants. The study quantified the benefits of nuts by the number of servings a day.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley The study authors found a 19 percent decrease in death rates among people who were high nut consumers compared to people who were low nut consumers, with a 24 percent decrease in heart disease, an 11 percent decrease in stroke and an 18 percent decrease in cancer. The authors also found the greatest benefit was seen among those who consumed at least 15 grams to 20 grams of nuts five or six days a week. These results appear to support the findings in the New England Journal study.

So how many nuts is 15 to 20 grams?

About 14 almonds, four Brazil nuts, 11 cashews, 12 hazelnuts, nine walnut halves, 29 pistachios and 18 peanuts.

That’s not a lot. I’m not suggesting you precisely count the number of nuts that you eat at any given time, but I would suggest you eat nuts frequently, perhaps as a snack. I have them on my desk at work. They’re much better for you than the unhealthy, high-sugar, high-carbohydrate snacks that can lead to obesity, diabetes and higher death rates. Nuts are high-energy snacks that provide a more sustained suppression of hunger than sugary snacks.

If you don’t eat nuts already, start slowly. You may like some more than others, and you may tolerate some better than others. In any case, have some nuts; they’re good for you.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY feel like a terrible wife when my Jeanne husband gets Phillips sick – not majorly sick, but with a run-of-the-mill cold. Men can be terrible babies when they are sick. It is a cold. He’s not dying. I happen to have a cold right now, and I am functioning just fine and not moaning and groaning about it.

Also, I am not his mother. When he whines, I shut down or become touchy and crabby. If he doesn’t whine, I’m happy to take care of him, but I can’t take the time during the day to lie in bed with him (I work from home, so I am accessible to him) to keep him warm. I can’t stay up until midnight rubbing his back, and I cannot tolerate the sappy whining.

I made him aware of my disdain for the way sick men behave a number of years ago, but he still acts like the world is ending when he has a cold. How do I tend to him without feeling resentful? – Not His Mother Dear Not His Mother: Cold season is in full swing now. Your husband didn’t catch one on purpose. When people feel fragile they need TLC, and he is no exception.

Here’s how to “tend” to him: Keep a supply of chicken soup on hand, and insist he keep drinking it to stay hydrated. (Chicken soup has magical curative powers.) If he has a headache, there are over-the-counter meds he can take, so suggest it when he complains. While you’re at the pharmacy, buy a heating pad and an extension cord for him so you can keep working if he has the chills. (You probably caught his cold while you were cuddling.) Sanitize any surface he may have touched. Even if you aren’t feeling sympathetic, try to appear as if you are – and keep your sense of humor. A final suggestion: Sleep apart until he’s no longer contagious, which may give him an incentive to recover faster.

Dear Abby: Every year, my adult siblings and mother exchange Christmas gifts. Since my husband died in 2012, my sister has told me she has made a gift in our name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She also makes a production of telling this to my children.

Abby, the MDA sends the person in whose name a donation has been made a notification about it, but we have never received a notice of any kind from them. When I contacted them and asked, I was told a donation was never received.

I always give my sister an expensive gift. After finding out what has been going on, I am really upset. Is this acceptable? I have no problem with not exchanging gifts, but this seems to be a way to receive without giving. – Hurt In Georgia Dear Hurt: Lying is not acceptable, and your sister should be ashamed of herself if that’s what has been going on. Tell her that, having received no notification from the MDA acknowledging her donation, you contacted them to ask why and were “shocked” to hear no donation had been made. If she can’t produce proof of payment, from now on agree to exchange Christmas cards – if you’re still speaking.

Here are the answers to the first two questions in my competition.

1. South is in six spades. West leads the club king. Declarer puts up dummy’s ace, but East ruffs and returns a trump. When West discards a club, how should South continue?

South has 12 top tricks: five spades (East’s club ruff cost his natural trump trick), three hearts and four diamonds. However, he cannot draw trumps, because he won’t have a dummy entry left.

West cannot have seven diamonds. So, after winning the second trick in hand, cash the diamond king.

If West discards, take the diamond queen, play a spade to the jack and cash the diamond winners. When both opponents follow suit, cash the heart ace. If West discards, cash the other top hearts, ruff a heart in the dummy, cash the spade jack, ruff a club to hand, draw trumps and take the last two tricks in diamonds.

If West follows to the heart ace, cash the diamond queen. If West discards, continue as above. Here, though, he follows suit. Now cash the heart king. When West pitches, cash the heart queen, ruff a heart low, take the spade jack and diamond ace (discarding your last heart) and claim.

2. Supply a sequence after South opens two clubs, and West overcalls five clubs.

This depends on partnership agreement. The “standard” method is that double by North warns of a very bad hand and pass is encouraging. In my sequence, South cue-bids six clubs to show at least 5-5 in two suits, and the auction ends in seven spades by North! It’s hard to reach seven no-trump.

MARENGO – The speech was one Matt Lynch never wanted to make. It also may have been the most eloquent words the Marengo football coach has ever spoken.

“If I want to remember somebody, I live the way they lived,” Lynch said.

“I make their spirit my spirit. I challenge you, if you’re going to memorialize him, do that. Because we’ll never know why. It’s Derek Caskey hard standing here and we have to lay to rest a 20-year-old kid who had so much promise in this world.”

Lynch spoke for 10 powerfully emotional minutes Sunday in Marengo’s Homer “Bill” Barry Gymnasium, remembering former player Derek Caskey, who died Jan. 17 after a battle with cancer. About 800 people attended the ceremony, which the Caskey family referred to as a celebration of Derek’s life.

Although Caskey’s life was far too short, there was no doubt about the impact he made on others. He truly had a gift.

“I can’t remember something that he ever did the wrong way,” said Weston Shepard, a former football teammate of Caskey’s. “His intentions were always good; he was always caring for other people. He took every opportunity, on and off the field, to do his absolute best.”

Shepard is a sophomore at Midland (Nebraska) University, an NAIA school where he plays basketball. He had a game Saturday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa, then made the seven-hour drive to be at the ceremony. He planned to drive back to Nebraska on Sunday night.

“Coach Lynch had asked me to speak on behalf of my peers, come back, and say these words,” Shepard said. “I had to take the opportunity; I’m very honored to do that.”

Caskey played football and wrestled at Marengo and graduated in 2015. He played football at Central College, an NCAA Division III school in Pella, Iowa.

Derek had never smoked or used tobacco, yet this disease was eating away inside. Medical personnel removed his tongue and his bottom teeth during eight-plus hours of surgery in August.

He had a traecheotomy left in his throat to take in food.

Through it all, the Caskeys remained upbeat. Patrick gave credit for that to Derek’s attitude.

“He’d get bad news, then more bad news, then more bad news, and he would always stay positive,” Patrick said. “There was an alternative, and he was going to be able to take care of it.

He’s the one who kept us going.”

During Shepard’s speech, he related a story that beautifully summed up Caskey. They attended a Marengo football game in the fall and talked for about 15 minutes. Those 15 minutes, Shepard said, changed his life.

“Even with everything that was going on, he was talking about getting back in the weight room and on the football field,” Shepard said. “It was the most inspiring thing I’ve ever heard.

Even in his darkest times, Derek had hope.”

Shepard urged those in attendance to honor Caskey by how they lived their lives.

from Central College attended the ceremony. At the end of it, offensive line coach Eric Jones presented Patrick and Rea with an honorary Bachelor of Arts diploma.

Central head coach Jeff McMartin shared a funny story about Caskey that spoke to his nature of never cutting a corner.

“On the first day of class in the second semester last year, the professor came in at 12:45 (p.m.),” McMartin said.

“They went through everything, and she said she would see them tomorrow at 12:45. Derek raised his hand and asked if the class wasn’t supposed to start at 12:30. She looked it up, and he was right. He did it because it was the right thing to do.”

Caskey left the world too soon, but also left an indelible legacy of someone who gave maximum effort, cared for others and did things in the right way.

“The quality I’ll remember most is his selflessness,” said Ethan Walsweer, another former football teammate.

“I cannot recall one time that he was malicious to anyone. People weren’t always nice to him, even on the football team. But he was never mean to anyone, always had a huge smile on his face.

Just a heart of gold, always laughing, always loving life.”

In the last weeks of Caskey’s life, in a hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, the family had frequent visits from Lynch, old teammates and other friends. Walsweer wanted to see his friend, who he knew was dying, and dreaded it at the same time.

“It gave you the worst feeling in your stomach, to see your friend, teammate, this kid you’ve known most of your life, just strapped to this bed, stuff in his throat, he can’t eat, can’t talk,” Walsweer said. “Such a happy soul, just so drained.”

EVANSTON – No nerves for Bryant McIntosh this time around. Just a solid all-around performance against his family’s other favorite team.

McIntosh had 21 points and eight assists, Sanjay Lumpkin scored 15 points, and surging Northwestern beat Indiana, 68-55, Sunday.

“Just really proud of McIntosh,” coach Chris Collins said. “I thought he controlled the game.”

The Wildcats (18-4, 7-2) held the Hoosiers to 32 percent shooting in their sixth consecutive victory. It’s their longest Big Ten winning streak since the 1932-33 team matched a school record with seven in a row, and their 7-2 start in conference play is their best since the 1937-38 season.

Heady stuff for a program that has never made it to the NCAA Tournament.

But it sure looks as if this might be the year for the Wildcats.

“This isn’t the same Northwestern,” McIntosh said.

McIntosh, a junior guard from Greensburg in southeast Indiana, strug-

mlazerus@suntimes.com LOS ANGELES – Like most Blackhawks, Corey Crawford isn’t exactly the most popular guy in Los Angeles.

He was booed during introductions.

Booed when announced as a starter.

Booed when he gave up two quick goals. Then he was serenaded with the standard “Craw-ford” chants for the rest of his 10-minute stint in the most helpless position in all of sports – goalie during a 3-on-3 All-Star game.

“They don’t like me here very much; you’ve got to expect that,” Crawford said. “One guy was still yelling at me while I was on the bench. I thought that was pretty funny. He was still giving it to me while I was off the ice. Tough crowd.”

Even Crawford’s teammates were poking some fun.

“He could have had a couple of those,” Jonathan Toews cracked afterward. “Nah, I’m just kidding. We might have hung him out to dry.”

The Hawks’ appearance in the All-Star tournament was fun, but, in Toews’ words, “quick, short, disappointing.” The Central Division was run out of the Staples Center by the Pacific Division by a score of 10-3, eliminating it from contention for the $1 million prize. The Metropolitan Division beat the Atlantic, 10-6, and then the Pacific, 4-3, to win the tournament.

Crawford was under siege all game, giving up five goals on 11 shots. Toews scored a goal and even played a modicum of defense, tracking down Drew Doughty to break up a breakaway, but Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith came up empty in the 20-minute semifinal.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Andy Dalton completed 10 of 12 passes for 100 yards and engineered two scoring drives to help lead the AFC to a 20-13 victory over the NFC in the Pro Bowl on Sunday night.

The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce late in the first half and then guided the offense down the field to set

up Justin Tucker’s 38-yard field to put the AFC ahead 17-7 midway through the third quarter.

Bears rookie running back Jordan Howard led the NFC with 21 rushing yards on five carries. He also had two receptions for 12 yards.

In an NFL all-star game that lacked spectacular play on either side, the AFC put together just enough scoring drives and then held on to preserve a win.

It marked the return to the AFC vs.

NFC matchup after the NFL used a format the last three years in which teams were drafted among the Pro Bowl players by designated captains.

The NFC had a chance to tie or take

the lead in the waning moments, but Kirk Cousins pass to Jimmy Graham went off the Seattle tight end’s hands and was intercepted at the AFC 2-yard line by Buffalo linebacker Lorenzo Alexander, who lateraled the ball to Denver’s Aqib Talib on the return that ended at the NFC 12 to end the threat.

This was the first time the Pro Bowl was played in Orlando, and the ending certainly didn’t disappoint the 60,834 fans who packed Camping World Stadium.

New Orleans’ Drew Brees completed 10 of 19 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown to lead the NFC. Kansas City’s Alex Smith, the starter for the

AFC, completed six of eight passes for 74 yards and one touchdown.

In a first half defined by big plays and key interceptions, the AFC was able to come up with one more play to take a 14-7 lead into halftime.

The NFC should have had 17 points in the first half, but a decision to not a kick a chip-shot field goal and an interception in the end zone denied the squad of points during the first two quarters.

Dalton’s scoring strike to Kelce put the AFC ahead 14-7 with 1:40 remaining in the second quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 36-yard punt return by the Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill to the NFC 38.

Walk in the park, right?

Not with this team. A walk in the park for these Bulls is just an opportunity for a mugging.

It came in the third, as Philadelphia (17-29) tied the score with 4:43left in the quarter on a T.J. McConnell 15-footer.

But there was just too much Butler for the 76ers to have to deal with. First Butler hit a 19-footer, and a few minutes later scored on back-to-back baskets to jumpstart the lead back up to 92-83. It was a lead that the Bulls (24-25) wouldn’t let slip again, either.

“It’s always good to win, man, no matter what goes on around here,’’ Butler said.

CHICAGO – Never one to mince words, Frank Thomas is speaking out again about players who use performance-enhancing drugs.

“Not happy at all,” Thomas said of Jeff Bagwell and Ivan Rodriguez getting voted into the Hall despite PED allegations. “Some of these guys were great players. But they wouldn’t have been great players without drugs.

“I don’t mind these guys doing what they want to do for their families and make their money. But don’t come calling to the Hall of Fame and say ‘I’m supposed to be in the Hall of Fame’ when you know you cheated.”

Speaking to an approving audience this weekend at SoxFest, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the Chicago Hilton, the White Sox great said Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa might as well be in the Hall as well.

“They should be in now, as far as I’m concerned,’’ he said.

Thomas was enshrined in 2014 after receiving 84 percent of the vote his first time on the ballot.

“They’ve let a few people in already, we all know,’’ Thomas said.

“It’s uncomfortable at this point. I’m sure this year’s going to be uncomfortable because we’ve got two great players going in, but they know. It’s no secret. If they didn’t do it, they would be stomping and kicking and in interviews saying, ‘I didn’t do it.’

Thomas, who batted .301 with 521 homers and 1,704 RBIs over 19 seasons in the majors, is considered the greatest hitter in Sox history. A former football player and baseball star at Auburn, he was never suspected of using performance enhancers and is proud of it.

“I never really worried about the other players,’’ he said the day he was elected. “I probably was the last one who found out, honestly, that everybody was taking drugs. I felt stupid about it, but I didn’t care about what the other guys were doing. I felt when I was healthy I was going to give you 40 home runs and 120 RBIs. That was me every year.’’

White Sox great and Hall of Famer users getting in. Bonds and Clemens were passed over for the fifth straight year but received a majority of votes from the Baseball Writers Association for the first time and now seem to be on their way to eventual enshrinement.

Thomas said he used amphetamines, commonly known as “greenies” early in his career. But not PEDs. Thomas also says Pete Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader who never has appeared on the ballot and has a lifetime ban because of gambling, should be in the Hall.

“Everybody deserves a second chance,” Thomas said of Rose, his Fox Sports sidekick. “If you’re gonna let the PED guys in, he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.”

Raines, who admitted to and dealt head-on with a cocaine problem early in his career before he became a teammate of Thomas with the Sox in 1991, was not associated with performance enhancers.

“I don’t know why it took him so long,” he said of Raines, who made it on his last try.

CHICAGO – Make no mistake about it, this Bulls team is still broken.

Sunday was just a good day to be fitted for a splint.

Thanks to 28 points from Jimmy Butler, as well as the bench showing up to add 49, the Bulls ended an ugly twogame losing streak that saw veterans criticize the young players, veterans criticize each other, fines handed out, and Butler and Dwyane Wade benched as punishment.

No wonder coach Fred Hoiberg was calling the 121-108 win over Philadelphia “a critical point of the season.’’

“I think the biggest thing [Sunday] was we played the right way,” Hoiberg said. “We played with great effort, and that’s what it’s about. If you go out there and give an honest effort every single night, you’re going to give yourself a chance. Not to say we’re going to win, but we’re going to be there. That’s what this group has to do.”

Hoiberg used words such as “togetherness,” and “unity.” Not exactly the description for this group five days earlier.

That’s when Wade and Butler made national headlines for criticizing the effort and how much the rest of the team cared about winning and losing. In the wake of those two veterans firing off those assessments, Rajon Rondo then took to his Instagram account and took a torch to both Butler and Wade, questioning their leadership skills.

A 40-minute team meeting/venting session Friday was the first step in trying to repair what seemed to be a very fractured locker room. And then Wade actually practicing with the team for the first time in months on Saturday was a good second step.

Winning, however, is the bottom line in the NBA. “We got to go out and act upon everything,” Butler said. “We talked about it, and now we’ve got to be about it. I think this is a great start. Now we’ve just got to string it together like I’ve been saying all year long. Now, it’s more important than ever. Now you can’t look back on how we’ve been playing and what has happened. Live for the right now and what are we going to do moving forward.’’

What still has to be concerning for Hoiberg, however, is the complacency in which his roster plays with over the course of a game.

The Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia – So here was Roger Federer, down a break in the fifth set in a Grand Slam final. Across the net was his nemesis, Rafael Nadal, the left-handed Spaniard he hadn’t been able to beat in a major final in almost a decade.

The 35-year-old father of four was back in his first tour-level tournament after six months off letting his injured left knee recover, and he hadn’t won any of the big four events in tennis since Wimbledon 2012. Nadal was returning from injury, too, and somehow the pair had renewed the Roger-Rafa rivalry in a throwback Australian Open final that transcended sport.

At that moment, an 18th Grand Slam title didn’t feature in Federer’s thinking.

Don’t play the player, he reminded himself, just play the ball. Attack the serve.

With that, Federer recovered the break and seized momentum in a roll of winning 10 consecutive points that helped propel him to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win Sunday. His fifth Australian title extended his buffer to four atop the list of all-time Grand Slam champions. Nadal

“For me it’s all about the comeback, about an epic match with Rafa again,” Federer said, “... that I can still do it at my age after not having won a slam for almost five years.

“That’s what I see. The last problem is the slam count – honestly, it doesn’t matter.”

Federer had lost six of the previous eight Grand Slam finals he’d played against Nadal and was 11-23 in their career meetings. His last win over Nadal in a major final was at Wimbledon in 2007.

“It remains for me the ultimate challenge to play against him,” Federer said.

“It’s super sweet, because I haven’t beaten him a Grand Slam final for a long time now.

“This one means a lot to me because he’s caused me problems over the years.”

With big wins come big celebrations, Federer said. “We’re going to party like rock stars tonight.”

By winning in Melbourne, where he first played in 2000 and where he kicked off his long reign at No. 1 with the title in 2004, he became the oldest man since Ken Rosewall in 1972 to win a slam.

After twice rallying from a set down, Nadal was a break up in the fifth but couldn’t hang on to become the first man in the Open era to win each of the four majors twice. Instead, Federer became the first man in the Open era to win three Grand Slam events at least five times (7 Wimbledon titles, 5 U.S. Opens, 5 Australian Opens and 1 French Open).

“The magnitude of this match is going to feel different. I can’t compare this one with any other one except for maybe the French Open in ’09,” Federer said.

“I waited for the French Open, I tried, I fought. I tried again and failed. Eventually I made it. This feels similar, yeah.”

Three months ago, Federer and Nadal were in the Spaniard’s native Mallorca for the opening of a tennis academy wondering if they’d ever be able to contend for majors again.

Yet here they were, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, renewing the classic rivalry that saw them dominate tennis a decade ago.

The long-odds final – No. 9 against No. 17 – unfolded after six-time champion Novak Djokovic was upset by No. 117-ranked Denis Istomin in the second round and top-ranked Andy Murray, a five-time losing finalist in Australia, went out in the fourth round to 50thranked Mischa Zverev.

Federer beat Zverev, and then U.S. Open champion Stan Wawrinka in a five-set, all-Swiss semifinal. That was the night before Nadal held off Grigor Dimitrov in an almost five-hour, five-set semifinal late Friday.
