Good morning, McHenry County ...

Fearing future cost of 3 weddings It’s weekends like this past one that make me realize that I have daughters, and that they won’t be little girls forever.

For one, we had a birthday party for two of them. My wife and I decided a great way to make the holiday season more chaotic was to have two children in December, one in early December and one on New Year’s Eve. It hardly seems possible that my second-born is now 9, or that her older sister is 11 and soon to be 12, closer to adulthood than to infancy. I know the next time I blink, they’re going to be out of high school.

At least I’ve still got the 3-year-old, who still shows a childlike willingness to refuse even the most reasonable of requests, such as, “Can I put your shoes on?”

And then there are all those wedding stories we’ve been running. The weekend Lifestyle cover was about wedding trends, followed by a cover story about the local wedding expo.

My own wedding was 15 years ago, and I don’t plan to have another. Although it still seems like a far-off dream that any of my little girls would ever get married – I mean, I’m not yet willing to accept that they might go on a date one day – it’s no longer an impossibility.

Then it occurs to me that the bride’s family usually foots the bill, and that I’ve got three potential brides.

I mean, look, I want my girls to be happy, but the more I think about it, the more it seems as if white weddings could really start to add

up to a lot of red ink for the old man.

I’ve heard of people offering their children cash to skip the big wedding to-do and just elope. But that didn’t appeal to their mother, and I don’t think it will appeal to her daughters, either.

I guess I could start saving for these happy occasions/financial debacles now, but that seems like jumping the gun considering I still have to find a way to get them all through college.

Instead, I think the strategy I will use is denial – don’t consider that any of them will ever get married, or that I will ever be old enough to walk them down the aisle and give them away, let alone try to figure out how to pay for it.

But I guess if my fears come to pass – I age, my daughters grow up and get married, and I have to foot the bill – on balance, there are much worse problems I could have.

Heck, maybe it’s even something to look forward to. Other than the bills, of course.

However, FaithBridge executive director Budd Friend-Jones said that by uniting, listening to one another and finding common ground, people of different backgrounds still can help end racism and religious discrimination.

“In today’s world with the growing division of our country and growing hatred expressed against Muslims, African-Americans, Hispanics, the list goes on, we think it’s important to be together through celebration, music and prayer,” Friend-Jones said.

WOODSTOCK – Filling a committee saved from the chopping block and gauging voter support for a countywide property tax freeze highlight Tuesday evening’s McHenry County Board agenda.

The first order of business after approving zoning petitions will be to assign seven members to the Human Resources Committee, which County Board members spared from a consolidation effort spearheaded by new board Chairman Jack Franks, D-Marengo, after his Nov. 8 election.

One issue that could prove contentious will be whether the full board follows the Committee on Committees’ advice to name Paula Yensen, the 24-member board’s sole Democratic member, as chairwoman. Yensen, D-Lake in the Hills, originally was nominated to chair the Public Health and Community Services Committee, but Republican members in a surprise vote chose someone else.

The committee is in charge of the overall management of personnel issues and collective bargaining with unions.

Board members also will vote whether to place an advisory referendum on the April 4 ballot asking McHenry County voters whether local governments should be required to ask voter permission to raise property taxes by any amount.

without going to a referendum.

Franks announced at the end of last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting that he intended to put the referendum before them. One of his last actions as a state representative last week was helping push a statewide freeze through the House, although it could not get a Senate vote before the end of the legislative session.

His decision was inPaula dependent of a Friday Yensen vote by the McHenry County Electoral Board to toss a similar question submitted by petition from the ballot.

The board ruled that the petition by new state Rep. Allen Skillicorn, R-East Dundee, only had about 1 percent of the signatures required by state law.

While governments can choose to

freeze their own levies, only state lawmakers can impose a countywide or statewide freeze.

Franks backed off of a plan to ask board members for two other referendums gauging public support for eliminating the recorder’s office – the main goal of new Recorder Joe Tirio – and halving the size of the County Board and going to single-member districts.

He will convene a special committee to investigate reducing the size and other government consolidation measures.

Tuesday night also happens to be the deadline for local governments to put referendums on the April 4 ballot.

Voters will go to the polls to elect their representatives to municipal, township, community college, school, park, library and other districts.

Although the County Board size referendum is listed on Tuesday’s agenda, Franks does not intend to call it.

McHenry County College Literacy Program helps volunteers help others SPONSORED BY

By Diane Krieger Spivak Life can be extremely difficult for those who don’t have basic skills in reading, math or English.

For more than 20 years McHenry County College’s adult volunteer literacy program has trained volunteers to teach reading, math or English as a Second Language to people living in McHenry County and the surrounding area.

The program, which serves more than 450 students annually, has approximately 100 active volunteers who collectively donate more than 300 hours of their time and talents each month to help improve the lives of those who need literacy services. Volunteers also assist with recruitment, assessment, and computer literacy.

Volunteers can teach throughout the county, on a day and time that is convenient for them, in a variety of locations including all public libraries in McHenry County and many churches.

Morning, afternoon and evening assignments

are available Sunday through Saturday. Flexible scheduling allows both working and retired people the opportunity to teach students who are at least 16 years old and not enrolled in any other school. Students come from many countries and have various levels of education.

Two free information sessions are available for prospective tutors, either 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 in Room A370 or 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 in Room A372 at McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake.

Volunteer tutors must be at least 18 and do not have to speak a second language or have any teaching experience. Volunteers receive free basic training to work with literacy students.

Instructional materials and support from MCC’s Adult Education staff and faculty are also provided. Currently, 93 people are on the waiting list for tutors.

Police department receives safety equipment donation

nlinhart@shawmedia.com McHENRY – Two local business owners met Monday with the McHenry Police Department to present them with more than 40 ballistic helmets.

“After all the issues with police officers not feeling safe with the shootings, I thought it was a great time to support our local police department,” said Wayne Jett, owner of Jett’s Heating & Air in Crystal Lake.

In September, Jett’s Heating & Air held a charity golf outing to raise money for the 48 ballistic helmets.

LOCAL BRIEF Officials wait to release ID of man killed by train in Woodstock WOODSTOCK – Woodstock police and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office have not yet released the identity of the man who was killed after being struck by a Metra train Sunday evening.

Woodstock Police Chief John Lieb said the coroner’s office was waiting to

conduct toxicology tests and notify the family before releasing the man’s name.

No one at the coroner’s office could be reached for comment Monday.

About 6:08 p.m. Sunday, police were dispatched to train tracks near the bridge over South Street, just east of Madison Street, for a call of a train hitting a pedestrian, Woodstock Police Sgt.

Red Kettle Campaign raises more than $230K NORTHWEST HERALD CRYSTAL LAKE – The Salvation Army of McHenry County recently announced that its Red Kettle Campaign surpassed its $200,000 goal, despite a $60,000 shortfall less than a week before Christmas.

With the help of more than 1,500 volunteers ringing the bells, this year’s campaign was able to bring in more than $230,000.

“We were blessed with joyful and determined bell ringers who were committed to help us reach our goal,” Capt. Carol Lewis said. “For us at The Salvation Army, it’s always encouraging to know that we have a supportive

community behind us and with their support, we can make a difference. We have an awesome community, and I am grateful for their kindness and support.”

The funds raised from the Red Kettle Campaign go back to the community to help families in need throughout the year.

Even though the Red Kettle Campaign is over, The Salvation Army still accepts monetary donations at The Salvation Army Crystal Lake Corps Community Center, 290 W. Crystal Lake Ave., or by donating online at www. salarmycl.org.

LAKE IN THE HILLS – Community members are planning a vigil to show support for the Lake in the Hills family killed in an apparent murder-suicide.

Two children, 11-year-old Ezequiel Garcia and 8-year-old Ariana Garcia, were strangled, and their mother, 27-yearold Carla M. Lopez-Mejia, died from asphyxia from hanging, according to the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.

Lake in the Hills police and Huntley Fire Department personnel found the three Jan. 10 in their residence in the 2300 block of Daybreak Drive. Police have not yet released information on Lopez-Mejia’s motive.

Ezequiel was a sixth-grade student at Marlowe Middle School, and Ariana attended Martin Elementary School as a third-grade student.

The vigil will be at 5 p.m. Friday in between the two schools, near 9625 Haligus Road, Lake in the Hills.

City Council to recognize Prairie Ridge champions

CRYSTAL LAKE – The state champion Prairie Ridge High School football team will be recognized Tuesday evening by the City Council.

The Wolves ended an undefeated season to take the Class 6A state championship in November with a 48-17 win over Sacred Heart-Griffin, which had been the top-ranked 6A team all season. Down 10-0 at the start of the game, the Wolves racked up 48 points to be answered with only seven by the Sacred Heart-Griffin Cyclones. It was the Wolves’ second championship title in six years.

In a separate matter, council members are expected to approve a new restriction to forbid semitrucks from parking along the east end of Central Park Drive, which provides access from Route 31 and Rakow Road to the Walmart Supercenter and its associated shopping center, the Goodwill store and Pauly Toyota.

Trucks for several years have been parking along the roadside, which makes snow removal difficult, and has made it difficult for the farmer who tends the field at the end of the road to access it with farming equipment.

During Unterschuetz’s presentation, she talked about how, over time, she’s learned about understanding racism and how white people need to put an end to their conscious and subconscious beliefs.

“Our role as white people is to become more aware of our racial conditioning and how it impacts others,” Unterschuetz said. “We can become aware of that by forming relationships with people of other races, and then we can heal ourselves by making decisions that prioritize unity above our own sense of wanting to always be right.”

Along with Unterschuetz, several community leaders came up to give brief speeches and calls to prayer. One of the event’s speakers was the Rev. Fred Rajan, who quoted Martin Luther King Jr. by saying, “Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

“The more we get to know each other and hear others’ stories, the better we are,” Rajan said.

Among many religious groups in attendance was the American Muslim Community Organization, based in Lake in the Hills.

“MLK Day opens our eyes, hearts and souls to everything as Americans should be doing to make our country better in terms of race relations and recognizing other faiths,” Mushtaq Darabu of AMCO said. “FaithBridge has done a great job at honoring this day.”

“People need to know you shouldn’t just judge someone by their skin color,” Quarcoo said.

After Quarcoo’s speech, Lexi Radzinski of School District 158 read her winning essay, which addressed growing up as a white girl and not truly knowing what it feels like to be discriminated against.

“I wrote about how I’ve never really experienced someone walking away from me or rolling up their car window just because of my skin color,” Radzinski said. “So I thought about what would it be like in someone else’s shoes, how we should treat people differently and how could we end racism.”

She was born May 3, 1935 in Fairmont, Minnesota to George and Susie (Gould) Miller. On August 25, 1956 she married Arnold Dahlman in Marengo.

Clarice spent 30 years working at the YumYum instilling a strong work ethic in the high school students of Marengo. After the YumYum closed she worked for 20 years at Ace Hardware where she again demonstrated her work ethic to those younger than her. She retired from Ace in 2016.

Clarice was always busy and usually it was doing something for the community and those around her. She was a very active member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Zion Ladies Aid. Clarice was also a longtime member of the Riley Township Cemetery Board. Later in life she also enjoyed playing cards.

She is survived by her children, Duane (Lou) Dahlman and Deb (Roy) Merritt; her grandchildren, Bill Dahlman and Kristin Dahlman; and many extended family members and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her parents; and her siblings, Harriett Boersma and Lyle Miller.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00pm on Tuesday, January 17 at Zion Lutheran Church, 408 Jackson St., Marengo. Visitation will continue from 10:00am to 11:00am on Wednesday, January 18 at the church. The service will be at 11:00am. Interment will be in Riley Township Cemetery.

News from across the state Governor signs school, day care lead-testing law

CHICAGO – Illinois elementary schools and day care centers must test drinking water sources for lead and notify parents of the results under legislation signed into law Monday by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

The plan for required one-time testing takes effect immediately and applies to schools with students up to grade 5 and facilities built before 2000. Schools and facilities will have to pay for the testing.

“This will change the system. We’re holding our schools and our day care centers accountable for lead testing,” Rauner said at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Chicago with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and state legislators. “We are

going to insist that this get done and our administration will be a key part of this.”

Off-duty sergeant wounds person after shots fired

CHICAGO– Authorities said an off-duty Chicago police sergeant shot and wounded a person after someone in a vehicle opened fire on the sergeant and his companions on the city’s northwest side.

Police said the sergeant was walking with acquaintances Sunday night in the Albany Park neighborhood when a group of people in a vehicle instigated a verbal confrontation. Police said someone in the vehicle fired shots, prompting the

sergeant to draw his gun and return fire.

The vehicle sped away. Police said a person in the vehicle, identified as a male, was shot in the head and taken to a hospital. Investigators recovered a weapon.

Neither the sergeant nor his companions were wounded.

Congregation hopes to rebuild after church fire

EAST ST. LOUIS – Members of an East St. Louis congregation are hoping to rebuild after a large blaze destroyed their church.

East St. Louis Fire Chief Jason Blackmon said the Saturday night fire engulfed the whole structure of the Christ Redeemed Missionary Baptist Church. The cause of the blaze is unknown. Blackmon described it as “almost like a big warehouse fire.” He said the fire started in the back of the church and took firefighters about five hours to get under control.

Rail union rejects deal on jobs program for felons

CHICAGO – The union representing Chicago Transit Authority rail workers has come out against an extension of a jobs program for felons.

The decision by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308 to oppose the Second Chance program that provides felons with temporary jobs cleaning buses and trains could mean the loss of jobs for 63 people.

CTA President Dorval Carter announced last year Local 308 and ATU Local 241, which represents bus workers, had agreed in principle with the CTA to extend the program before it was to expire.

Local 308 President Kenneth Franklin said Carter’s statement that an agreement was reached was “premature” because membership hadn’t yet voted.

Franklin says membership since has voted not to extend the program.

NEW YORK – Days before taking office, President-elect Donald Trump attempted to navigate the fallout of his flap with a civil-rights leader and colleague of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while also losing a member of his incoming administration to accusations of plagiarism.

Trump on Monday met with one of King’s sons on the holiday marking the life of the slain American icon just days after the president-elect attacked Rep. John Lewis on Twitter. Lewis and the elder King were among the Big Six leaders of the civil-rights movement of the 1960s.

Trump accused Lewis, D-Ga., for being “all talk” after Lewis questioned the legitimacy of Trump’s election. The president-elect also advised the veteran congressman to pay more attention to his “crime-ridden” Atlanta-area district. Trump’s comments drew widespread criticism and have done little to reassure those uneasy about the transition from the nation’s first black president to a president-elect still struggling to connect with most nonwhite voters.

On Monday, she withdrew her name from consideration after CNN reported last week that several passages in a 2012 book Crowley wrote were plagiarized.

Publisher HarperCollins then pulled the book.

Crowley’s retreat was first reported by The Washington Times. The transition official confirmed the decision on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Trump has continued to lash out at his critics in the intelligence community and questioned whether the CIA director himself was “the leaker of fake news” in a Sunday night tweet.

FBI arrests widow of Orlando shooter

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The wife of the Orlando nightclub shooter, who was extensively questioned by federal agents in the days after the massacre, has been arrested by the FBI in connection with the attack, authorities said Monday.

Noor Salman was taken into custody Monday morning in the San Francisco Bay area and is facing charges in Florida including obstruction of justice. A Twitter post from the U.S. attorney’s office in Orlando said Salman will make her initial court appearance Tuesday morning in Oakland, California.

Noor Salman moved to California after her husband, Omar Mateen, was killed in a shootout with SWAT team members during the June 12 massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

FBI agents repeatedly questioned Salman in the aftermath of the shooting about whether she had advance knowledge of her husband’s plans. Salman told The New York Times in an interview published last fall that she knew her husband had watched jihadist videos but that she was “unaware of everything” regarding his intent to

Mateen pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in a 911 call to emergency officials during the standoff. He also made a series of Facebook posts and searches before and during the attack.

Salman, who grew up northeast of San Francisco, wed Mateen in 2011 after the two met online. They lived in Fort Pierce, Florida, at the time of the shooting. Last month, Salman filed a petition in a California court to change the name of the son she had with Mateen.

“We said from the beginning, we were going to look at every aspect of this, of every aspect of this shooter’s life to determine not just why did he take these actions – but who else knew about them? Was anyone else involved?” Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in an MSNBC interview on Monday.

The Times first reported on the arrest.

For the overall global economy, the IMF left its projections unchanged growth of 3.4 percent for this year and 3.6 percent for 2018, both up from 3.1 percent growth in 2016, a year when global growth slowed to its weakest performance since the 2008-2009 financial crisis.

But the IMF saw better prospects in a number of countries including Germany, Japan, Spain and Britain, thanks in part to a rebound in growth in many parts of the world in the second half of last year that provided momentum going into 2017.

“The global economic landscape started to shift in the second half of 2016,” Obstfeld said, helped by a rebound in manufacturing activity in many countries and the financial market rally that started with Trump’s No-

vember election victory.

But Obstfeld said there was a wider than usual range of upside and downside risks in part because of the uncertainty over how much of Trump’s program will win congressional approval and what the spillover effects will be for the rest of the world.

While Trump’s election victory boosted economic prospects in the United States, the impact has been uneven for the rest of the world. Some countries could see stronger growth from the increase in activity in the United States, the world’s largest economy, but some emerging market countries may face challenges as global interest rates rise.

The new outlook boosted the growth forecast for China, the world’s second largest economy, by 0.3 percentage point to 6.5 percent this year. The IMF expects the Chinese government to providing further stimulus to the economy.

The outlook also boosted 2017 growth projections for Germany, Japan, Spain and Britain to reflect stronger-than-expected performances in the second half of last year. At the same time, the IMF lowered its forecasts for Italy, South Korea, India and Brazil, reflecting disappointing performances in the last half of 2016.

Mexican resort shooting kills 5, panics festival-goers

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Gunfire broke out in a crowded beachfront nightclub throbbing with electronic music before dawn Monday, causing five deaths and setting off a bloody stampede by screaming concertgoers at an international festival in this Caribbean resort.

At least one person died in the crush to escape, and some of the 15 people wounded or injured were hurt in the rush out, authorities said.

Quintana Roo state Attorney General Miguel Angel Pech ruled out any terrorist attack, and the state’s governor said it involved a personal dispute.

Pech said the shooting erupted when security personnel tried to stop a man from entering the Blue Parrot club with a gun.

Three of those killed were part of the security detail at the 10-day BPM electronic music festival, Pech said.

State officials said the dead included two Canadians, an Italian and a Colombian. The gunman apparently fled.

Jeffrey Castelein, 33, a fork lift operator from Belgium, said he heard 15 to 20 shots before he and his friends leapt the fence. “At first we didn’t realize, and then everybody fell down and you had to hide a little bit. And then we went out the back by the sea.”

His group got separated and had to wait for everyone to meet back at the apartment. “It was the longest 20 minutes of my life,” Castelein said.

WASHINGTON – The International Monetary Fund on Monday raised its forecast for the U.S. economy over the next two years, saying President-elect Donald Trump’s policies should boost economic growth, particularly in 2018.

But officials warned that if Trump’s protectionist trade proposals set off a trade war, that could be “quite destructive” for the global economy.

The IMF also increased 2017 growth projections for a number of other countries including China, Germany, Japan and Britain, but warned that the global economy faced a number of downside risks from rising protectionism to a jump in interest rates.

The 189-nation global lending agency’s latest economic outlook took note of the significant effect Trump’s election has already had in giving a boost to U.S. stock prices, interest rates and the dollar. The new outlook puts U.S. economic growth at 2.3 percent this year and 2.5 percent in 2018. That would be an improvement from lackluster U.S. growth around 1.6 percent in 2016.

During the campaign, Trump said his economic policies of tax cuts, regu-

latory reform and boosts in infrastructure spending would lift U.S. growth to annual rates of 4 percent.

The new forecast represents a boost of 0.1 percentage point this year and an increase of 0.4 percentage point for 2018, when Trump’s stimulus plans would be expected to be phased in. That is a half-point higher growth than the IMF was forecasting in October, before Trump’s election.

In contrast, the World Bank last week left its Maurice U.S. forecast unchanged Obstfeld at 2.2 percent growth in 2017 and 2.1 percent for 2018, arguing that there was too much uncertainty over the fate of Trump’s proposals to incorporate them in a forecast.

But IMF Chief Economist Maurice Obstfeld told reporters at a briefing Monday that he viewed the IMF’s upgrade for the U.S. as a moderate increase that took into account the U.S. election results.

Picture mixed on Sessions The concerns voiced about Sen. Jeff Sessions’, R-Ala., nomination for attorney general cannot be written off as political grandstanding. There are substantive objections to Sessions, for years an ideological outlier in the Senate, ascending to the pinnacle of the U.S. justice system. Though the senator made a series of encouraging commitments during his confirmation hearings last week, he did not allay every reasonable worry.

Sessions was at his most impressive when he repeatedly insisted he would respect the rule of law, affirming that the attorney general must be willing to say “no” to the president and must resign if ordered to do something illegal. Mark those words. Sessions also committed to enforcing Supreme Court rulings upholding abortion rights and same-sex marriage, though he disagrees with them. He promised to recuse himself from any outstanding questions relating to Hillary Clinton’s email practices or the Clinton Foundation, given his strong comments on these matters during the campaign. Though he alarmingly supported “enhanced interrogation techniques” in the past, he acknowledged that laws barring them now must be respected.

Sessions was not quite as definitive in disclaiming Trump’s proposed “Muslim ban.” He insisted that restricting all Muslims would be wrong, but he left wiggle room when he said that those who interpret their religion to include “dangerous doctrines” should be scrutinized.

Though Sessions painted himself as a civil rights champion, the picture is mixed. He acknowledged the South’s horrific legacy of racism and called the NAACP “an organization that has done tremendous good.” But he mostly evaded specific questions about discriminatory voter ID laws, which the Justice Department must play a key role in fighting. He pointed out that he voted to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act, but his Democratic interlocutors reminded him that he also opposed fixing a core section after the Supreme Court gutted it.

Most concerning was Sessions’ habit of pleading ignorance to avoid taking clear positions on some pressing issues. “I have done no research into that” was his response when asked if the Russians conducted election hacking, even though he expressed confidence in intelligence agencies who have taken a clear position.

Will Sessions live up to his commitment to stand up to the White House when the president or his staff is wrong? Will he treat civil rights enforcement as the core Justice Department responsibility it is?

As attorney general, Sessions will have the opportunity to prove he is as serious about these principles – The Washington Post as he claims.

Death penalty not the answer The death penalty is not a deterrent to horrendous crime. It has never proved to be. And it’s costly. So why do we do it?

A federal district court jury in South Carolina last week sentenced Dylann Roof to death for his June 2015 attack on a black church’s Bible study group. Nine people were slaughtered.

A lot of people would argue Roof should be put to death.

And we’re guessing it would include the relatives of some of his victims. We can’t blame their emotion. All their relatives were doing was going to Bible study class. How horrific it must have been to get that phone call from authorities.

During his trial, he served as his own attorney and in a sworn confession he told FBI agents “I had to do it.”

Roof showed no remorse after he was arrested. Yes, he’s despicable. He’s proven to be

a terrible collection of molecules. He is the poster child for capital punishment. Yet, we still shouldn’t do it.

Social media has taken to debating his death sentence.

It’s running about half and half.

Some people want him to rot in prison, others want him to fry.

But study after study has shown the death penalty is actually more costly than a life in prison. According to deathpenalty.org, cases without the death penalty cost approximately $740,000, while cases where the death penalty is sought cost $1.26 million. It’s a high price to pay either way and justice should be the motivational factor, not economics. But the hunch here is the boys in the big house will take care of justice on their own, which is typical in these situations.

Currently, only 18 states have the death penalty, with Texas be-

ing the most prominent user. Yet that fact has done little to deter capital crime in Texas. It leads the nation in capital crime.

Iowa did away with the death penalty in 1964. And during the years, federal courts have offered rulings on capital punishment. That debate, we suspect, will continue.

We certainly don’t feel sorry for Roof and the punishment he’s been given. It’s the law of the land in South Carolina, so he’s getting what the law in that state allows.

But, while it will fill another grave once his lethal dose of poison has been injected by our government, there’s no evidence to support his death is going to do anything to deter future capital crimes by others.

So, why do we do it?

We shouldn’t.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

What are the conditions in Mexico and throughout the region that cause people to want to flee? What are the government policies in those countries that prevent their citizens from living healthy, happy, productive lives?

The most productive use of taxpayer dollars is to help those countries fight drug lords, stimulate the economy, produce jobs with living wages, clean up the slums, promote education, and provide safe communities where parents don’t have to fear for the lives of their children.

Come to think of it, why not spend your time working for these same goals right here in the United States?

Madigan began his own speech by asking for bipartisanship, but then defiantly refused yet again to participate in any “race to the bottom” with Gov. Rauner and appeared to dismiss out of hand any attempt to reform workers’ compensation insurance, a key component of the compromise brewing in the Senate.

Madigan’s speech was nothing like Senate President Cullerton’s, who mildly complained about the fact that the Senate is often ignored by reporters because “if there’s no conflict there’s no coverage.”

Cullerton talked about the advances he and Senate Republican Leader Radogno have made together. The two were elected to their leadership roles as the divisive end of the Rod Blagojevich era was coming to a tragic end. “We’ve seen some pretty bad times and we’ve gotten through them by working together,” he said.

“How about we just try governing for a little bit?” Cullerton gently asked near the end of his speech after saying the non-stop campaign-style messaging needs to stop. “That’s what the people have sent us here to do.”

That same sentiment was expressed much more forcefully in the

House, where Republican Leader Jim Durkin angrily demanded an end to the Democrats’ “gotcha” games of holding endless roll calls purely designed to be used in campaign ads.

Watching the two ceremonies was truly a study in contrasts. The Senate was brimming with hope that it can finally lead the way out of this horrific two-year impasse. The House, meanwhile, is still mired up to its collective neck in the stalemate with no clear way forward.

And then there was the lone “Present” vote by Rep. Scott Drury (D-Highwood), who issued a long and rambling press release afterward predicting that he will likely face “repercussions” for his (mostly meaningless) act, and claiming that “Illinois is in a free-fall into the abyss.”

Despite his usual melodramatics and penchant for self-aggrandizement, Drury’s statement was almost the perfect cap for a joyless and grim afternoon. It is clear, he wrote, that “a majority of the General Assembly is not ready for a new Speaker.”

That is very true. Last week, the House Democrats continued the ageold political practice of dancing with the one who brung them. But there were few smiles to be seen.

If I had to choose a word to describe the Democrats’ nominating speeches for House Speaker Michael Madigan’s re-election last week, it would be either “defensive” or perhaps “joyless.”

The speeches seemed directly aimed at Madigan’s toughest critics – and there are plenty of those out there. The nominators at times angrily justified their own votes for Madigan and their continued willingness to support him while under siege by a hostile kabillionaire governor and much of the state’s media. They literally cannot go anywhere without being asked about why they continue to back Madigan.

For the most part, these were speeches from an all-too-real bunker.

Rep. Dan Beiser (D-Alton) told a touching story about how Madigan dotes over his grandchild, but began his speech with an anecdote about how he figured the child would get him in trouble by playing with a toy car in Madigan’s office – a clear acknowledgment of his leader’s fearsome reputation. It was an attempt to humanize a man who has been turned into a cartoon caricature of an evil villain. But it was too little, too late.

Beiser, by the way, was a Tier One campaign target last year who was repeatedly forced to distance himself from Madigan. His nominating

Oxfam: 8 men are as rich as half the world

The Associated Press DAVOS, Switzerland – The gap between the super-rich and the poorest half of the global population is starker than previously thought, with just eight men, from Bill Gates to Michael Bloomberg, owning as much wealth as 3.6 billion people, according to an analysis by Oxfam released Monday.

Presenting its findings on the dawn of the annual gathering of the global political and business elites in the Swiss ski resort of Davos, anti-poverty organization Oxfam says the gap between the very rich and poor is far greater than just a year ago. It’s urging leaders to do more than pay lip-service to the problem.

If not, it warns, public anger against this kind of inequality will continue to grow and lead to more seismic political changes akin to last year’s election of Donald Trump as U.S. president and Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.

“It is obscene for so much wealth to be held in the hands of so few when 1 in 10 people survive on less than $2 a day,” said Winnie Byanyima, executive director of Oxfam International, who will be attending the meeting in Davos.

“Inequality is trapping hundreds of millions in poverty; it is fracturing our societies and undermining democracy.”

The same report a year earlier said that the richest 62 people on the planet owned as much wealth as the bottom half of the population. However, Oxfam has revised that figure down to eight following new information gathered by

Oxfam used Forbes’ billionaires list that was last published in March 2016 to make its headline claim. According to the Forbes list, Microsoft founder Gates is the richest individual with a net worth of $75 billion. The others, in order of ranking, are Amancio Ortega, the Spanish founder of fashion house Inditex; financier Warren Buffett; Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim Helu; Amazon boss Jeff Bezos; Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg; Oracle’s Larry Ellison; and Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York.

Oxfam outlined measures that it

hopes will be enacted to help reduce the inequality. They include higher taxes on wealth and income to ensure a more level playing field and to fund investments in public services and jobs, greater cooperation among governments on ensuring workers are paid decently and the rich don’t dodge their taxes. And business leaders should commit to paying their fair share of taxes and a living wage to employees.

Max Lawson, Oxfam’s policy adviser, urged billionaires to “do the right thing,” and to do “what Bill Gates has called on them to do, which is pay their taxes.”

The ability of the rich to avoid paying their fair share of taxes was vividly exposed last year in the so-called “Panama Papers,” a leaked trove of data that revealed details on offshore accounts that helped individuals shelter their wealth.

“We have a situation where billionaires are paying less tax often than their cleaner or their secretary,” Lawson told The Associated Press. “That’s crazy.”

It’s because of this kind of inequality that trust in institutions has fallen sharply since the global financial crisis of 2008, according to Edelman, one of the world’s biggest marketing firms.

In its own pre-Davos survey of more than 33,000 people across 28 markets, Edelman found the largest-ever drop in trust across government, business, media and even nongovernmental organizations. CEO credibility is at an all-time low and government leaders are the least trusted group, according to the survey.

The firm’s 2017 Trust Barometer found that 53 percent of respondents believe the current system has failed them in that it is unfair and offers few hopes for the future, with only 15 percent believing it is working. That belief was evident for both the general population and those with college education.

“The implications of the global trust crisis are deep and wide-ranging,” said Richard Edelman, the firm’s president and CEO. “It began with the Great Recession of 2008, but like the second and third waves of a tsunami, globalization and technological change have further weakened people’s trust in global institutions.

The consequence is virulent populism and nationalism as the mass population has taken control away from the elites.”

Woody Harrelson to star in film ‘Lost In London LIVE’ LONDON – Woody Harrelson is trying to do something that’s never been done before, although he’s starting to realize why his feat would be a first.

The American actor plans to spend the early hours of Friday shooting a full-length film, called “Lost In London LIVE,” which will be broadcast as it happens in more than 550 U.S. theaters.

“Someone was asking me earlier, ‘Do you think that people will start doing this now? Filming a movie and live-streaming it at the same time?’ And I said, ‘Well, not if they speak to me first.’ This is some harrowing stuff,” he laughed.

Based on a relentlessly awful night out he really had in the British capital, Harrelson wrote and is directing the film that combines comedy and drama.

Talking on the movie’s set in the streets of London’s theater district, where rehearsals are happening during the day and at night, Harrelson said he could do with three more weeks of preparation before the action unfolds in real time.

Harrelson, 55, was arrested in London after a night out in 2002. He declined to say whether “Lost in London” is based on events from that night, but the set includes a re-creation of the club he visited before his arrest.

“Lost In London LIVE” is an attempt to merge his two loves, film and theater. And even though audiences will be watching on the other side of the pond when it’s Thursday evening, Harrelson is convinced the event’s live-streamed nature will add an electrifying element.

“Will it mess up the performance? That’s the question. Will the fear be too high to eke out a performance? I don’t know,” he said.

Harrelson’s co-stars are musician Willie Nelson and actor Owen Wilson, a close friend who also helped refine the script.

TRENTON, N.J. – A Bruce Springsteen cover band has changed its tune about performing at a Washington gala the day before Republican Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The B Street Band decided to pull out of the Thursday night performance at the New Jersey State Society’s gala.

Band leader Willie Forte said Monday that the decision was based “solely on the respect and gratitude we have for Bruce and the E Street Band. That conquers everything else.”

Trump’s inauguration is Friday, followed that evening by inaugural balls.

Springsteen has called the Republican president-elect a “flagrant, toxic narcissist” and has questioned whether he’s competent for the job. Springsteen performed during Democratic President Barack Obama’s 2009 inaugural, and Obama presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

Manager: Met Opera’s cancellation ‘disappointing’

NEW YORK – The manager for Spanish director Calixto Bieito said the Metropolitan Opera’s decision to cancel his production of Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino” is “cruel and disappointing.”

Met General Manager Peter Gelb said Friday that he had dropped the staging from the company’s 2016-17 schedule to save about $1 million. The staging, a co-production with the English National Opera, premiered in London in November 2015.

DuVernay talks with Winfrey about Trump, race, new film

Carriers bracing for massive data usage during inauguration

ASHINGTON – All around the National Mall, what look like strange, giant meatballs or cheese wheels on a stick mysteriously have been cropping up.

Fenced in and padlocked, these towering structures easily might be confused for spy equipment or extra security – perhaps not a bad guess for a city that’s among the world’s most heavily defended. But in fact, they’re part of a massive effort by cellphone carriers to prepare for an estimated million or more people who will be descending on Washington for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Wireless companies are bracing for a torrent of data usage by smartphone-toting visitors who intend on sharing photos and videos of their experience online. And to support all that activity, the carriers literally are rolling out their most advanced cellular antennas, the meatball-shaped devices now dotting the nation’s capital.

These “cells on wheels,” or COWs for short, have been placed in key locations to boost coverage and capacity. Unlike a typical cell tower, these mobile antennas are designed to handle surges of traffic surrounding large, public events such as NASCAR races and music concerts. Each one is capable of blasting out a dozen or more radio beams that together will allow hundreds of thousands of people to tweet, Instagram and post to Facebook on Jan. 20 as easily as they were standing in their own living room.

The companies declined to share estimates on how many thousands of gigabytes’ worth of tweets and

Facebook posts might traverse their networks next week. But to be safe, many have spent months boosting their mobile data capacity in the area by 400 percent or more. Some began their planning almost as soon as President Barack Obama’s last inauguration ended.

“This is going to be the most connected inauguration in history,” said Mark Funka, Verizon’s regional director of system performance.

This isn’t the first time carriers have put stopgap measures in place to handle the crush of additional traffic.

Companies started doing it in earnest beginning in 2009, with President Obama’s first inauguration. At the time, the country’s data usage habits looked very different; only a third of Americans had a smartphone, according to the Pew Research Center.

Most consumers previously had been on more basic phones, and so past inaugurations didn’t put as much pressure on carriers’ networks.

But those usage numbers have shifted dramatically during the past

few years. Today, Pew estimates nearly 80 percent of Americans are on smartphones, and 68 percent of the country is on Facebook.

All this means tremendous demand for wireless services, particularly for data. To keep up, carriers aren’t just using mobile cell sites for the inauguration. They’re also retrofitting existing cell towers with newer antennas that can tilt and adjust their angles to cover large crowds better.

They’re using new bandwidth management techniques that only are possible with the latest flavors of LTE, such as something called “carrier aggregation.” That’s when a company melds together airwaves that operate at different frequencies to create, essentially, a larger highway for data.

“These options weren’t available to us four years ago,” said Brian Harrison, a technical communications manager at AT&T, “but they are today, which is great, because user habits have changed so much.”

Over the past year, Sprint has added three times the amount of bandwidth normally available in the area.

T-Mobile says it expanded its local network capacity by 10 times. AT&T is quintupling its LTE capacity, and Verizon said it is enhancing it by six times.

In addition to boosting signals on the Mall, the carriers have upgraded facilities at locations likely to experience high traffic, such as Reagan National Airport, Union Station and area hotels. Signal capacity along the presidential parade route also is being buffed.

Although the COWs are temporary, much of the inauguration prep – like the retrofitted towers– will be permanent, meaning D.C. residents and tourists will continue to benefit from the system upgrades long after the stands and crowds disappear.

And when it comes to some of the carriers’ newest technologies, Washington will be the vanguard; some of this stuff only has begun to roll out to the rest of the country.

“Charging for its online services is hardly surprising, but I’ll be curious to see if Nintendo can justify it,” said Jim Sterling, founder of the influential gaming blog The Jimquisition.

For new games, Nintendo also introduced a new Mario game called Super Mario Odyssey as well as Splatoon 2, a successor to the popular paint-throwing game. Another new title called Arms was introduced, designed to work with the Switch’s new Joy-Con motion-sensing controllers. While the controllers pack more features and sensors, allowing for new ways to play games, they essentially are upgrades of Wii’s motion controllers.

It’s critical to have a lineup of compelling games that have broad appeal – including sports, first-person shooter, role-playing and puzzles – at the launch because that drives sales of new consoles. The Switch, however, will have fewer than a dozen titles when it goes on sale, half what Wii U had when it debuted.

In terms of battery life, Nintendo said the Switch will provide 2.5 to 6 hours of gameplay. Nintendo’s promise of delivering high-end graphics in a portable package also rests largely on its ability to maximize battery life.

“Our biggest concern is battery life, which we think will remain an issue,” Macquarie Securities said.

As a portable gadget, the device sports a screen, attachable joysticks and battery. Nintendo is betting the ability to play the same titles indoors and outdoors will appeal to gamers who now play one set of games at home and a different collection on their smartphones when out and about.

Still, that means the Switch will have to compete with smartphones, which most people already own and use. It’s unclear if consumers will want to carry another bulky device when smartphones already fill their spare moments with millions of games, apps and videos.

“There is a possibility that this proposed new game-playing experience will not immediately be understood,” said Takeshi Koyama, an analyst at Mizuho Financial Group Inc. Since its Wii peak about a decade ago, Nintendo shares have slumped by about two-thirds, losing more than $50 billion in market value. In October, Nintend President Tatsumi Kimishima told Bloomberg the Switch will play a central role in restoring operating profits to a level of around 100 billion yen a year.

Nintendo’s new Switch gaming console is off to an underwhelming start.

The new machine, a tablet-sized device with wireless controllers that can be used anywhere but also connects to TVs, will go on sale March 3 at a price of $300, with a brand-new Zelda game as its launch title. None of that, however, was enough to convince investors it will be a big moneymaker for the Kyoto-based company, whose shares fell 5.8 percent to 23,750 yen after Nintendo executives held a presentation in Tokyo last week.

Nintendo is counting on the Switch to end years of pain at its console division, which released a successor to the popular Wii in 2012, only to see it flop. After shunning the smartphone market for years, its long-awaited foray into smartphone gaming got off to a rough start, with last month’s disappointing debut of Super Mario Run. With Switch, there isn’t any single distinguishing feature – like the Wii’s motion controllers when that machine debuted a decade ago – likely to lure buyers for the new console and its games. That’s fueling concerns

Nintendo may be losing its ability to deliver hit entertainment products.

“The pricing and game titles were as expected; the stock was bought up on hopes and sold on the fact,” said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Ace Research Institute. “The first two weeks of sales will be critical for Nintendo, and they will have to sell the 2 million units they forecast for the quarter. The Switch’s success will be determined at the start.”

Switch surpassed most analysts’ estimates of a price between $250 and $280. At $300, the Switch would cost more than Sony’s $260 PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s $240 Xbox One, based on current U.S. retail pricing. An early leak of the price in Canada triggered a decline in Nintendo shares hours before Friday’s presentation.

Nintendo also introduced one new feature for the Switch: an online gaming network. While details were scarce, the company said it would let people play with friends and chat online. The service initially will be free from March, and become a paid service later in the year. While the connectivity is new for Nintendo, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 console have had the feature for years.

24 Consult doctor before moving kids to vegan diet Dear Doctors: My sister has decided to switch her entire family to a vegan diet, including her 2-year-old twins. But I’m really worried – is it possible for young children to stay healthy and get all of the nutrients a growing body requires?

Dear Reader: Unlike a vegetarian diet, which cuts out meat, poultry and fish, the vegan approach eliminates all animal-based products. It centers instead on whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables and leafy greens.

Some people choose a vegan diet for health reasons, others for ethical ones. But because not all nutrients essential to human health are present in plants, vegans face special challenges to ensure their diet is well-rounded.

A vegan diet for young children has gotten a lot of bad press recently. A mother in Pennsylvania, who fed her infant only nuts and berries in an effort to go vegan, was recently charged with child endangerment.

In Italy, where a number of vegan babies wound up in the hospital with malnutrition, some lawmakers want to make a plant-based diet illegal for anyone under 16.

But these are extreme cases. Proponents of plant-based diets say the real culprit is ignorance of proper nutritional principles, not veganism itself. With care and vigilance, and with the guidance of a pediatrician or registered dietitian, a well-balanced vegan diet can provide the nutritional essentials of children and adolescents.

Due to their more intensive nutritional requirements, children and adolescents are more susceptible to malnutrition when following an atypical diet. With a relatively short window in childhood during which critical growth in the brain, skeleton and internal organs takes place, it’s all too easy for a child’s diet to adversely affect future

Vitamin B-12, vitamin D, iron, zinc, calcium and essential fatty acids are key nutrients for proper development in babies and children. Getting an adequate amount of B-12, which is provided by milk and eggs in a traditional diet, and meeting the minimum requirement for iron, which is present in red meat, is of particular concern in the vegan diet.

As there are no known plant sources for vitamin B-12, and without meat to provide essential fatty acids and other nutrients, providing a nutritional supplement, such as a multivitamin, is essential to normal growth and good health.

Another concern is the plant-based diet is less nutrient-dense and more difficult to digest than the traditional diet. It not only takes more food to meet caloric and nutritional needs in a plant-based diet, it requires a greater amount of energy for the body to extract nutrients. Including concentrated sources of energy such as nuts and nut butters, soy products and legumes will help support appropriate growth.

A final thought – going vegan is a radical change. Perhaps suggest to your sister the family do a dry run, for instance Vegan Wednesdays for a month or two? If that works, then they can expand slowly until veganism becomes a family lifestyle.

I bought my 11-year-old daughter a cellphone. My ex does not approve.

We have been divorced for six years, and he still can’t get over it. He despises me. He refuses to listen to why I want her to have a cellphone.

While I want her to be responsible with it, I realize she will make mistakes – which she already has by being on her phone too much. (It has been taken away from her once.) I want her to carry the phone with her in case of emergencies. If it is confiscated at school, her dad will no doubt tell me, “I told you so.”

Should I abide by his wishes and not allow her to have the phone, or do you think my points are valid? – Mom With Phone Issue Dear Mom: Wanting your daughter to have the cellphone in case of emergency seems valid to me. If you are her custodial parent, I think that prerogative belongs to you.

But I do have a question: Who took the phone away from your daughter? If you did it because she was abusing the privilege, then she will learn her lesson if you are consistent. If a teacher takes it away from her at school, there should be consequences and you should ensure they are enforced.

Yes, he had only three-card support, but those three honors were more powerful than four low cards would have been. Five no-trump asked South to pick a slam, and Justin did well to choose the 4-3 fit.

West led a trump. South took that on the board and ran the heart queen. West won and persevered with a second trump. However, declarer won on the board, played a heart to his ace, ruffed a heart, crossed to the spade ace, drew trumps and claimed. His 12 tricks were three spades, two hearts, four diamonds, two clubs and the heart ruff.

Every other South in a six-team event played in six no-trump, but only two succeeded. Do you see how to bring home six no-trump?

This slam is against the odds.

Probably most declarers hoped for a 3-3 club split, but the winning line was to lead a heart toward dummy’s queen. If West took the trick, South had 12 winners. Or, if West played low, declarer, after winning with dummy’s queen, could run his pointed-suit winners to squeeze-endplay West. The curious may work it out.

A 4-3 fit plays well when the trumps are strong and a ruff can be taken in the shorter trump hand -- as in this deal.

joestevenson@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON – Marengo displayed a mood that was practically upbeat after its championship loss at the Burlington Central MLK Classic to the host Rockets.

The Indians took consolation from their second-half fortitude, while realizing their first-half ball security issues were what led to a 13-point deficit.

They maintained a focus on the larger picture, knowing there were things they learned about themselves and Burlington that can be applied in the not-too-distant future – such as Friday’s 7 p.m. rematch on the same floor in a Kishwaukee River Conference boys basketball game.

Monday’s title game belonged to the Rockets, who held off Marengo’s second-half surge for a 64-57 win. It was Burlington’s second title in the event’s two-year history and ended the Indians’ seven-game winning streak.

“In the second quarter, they went on a pretty big run, we kind of got a little frazzled by the pressure they were putting on us,” Indians guard Mike Volkening said. “After that, we kind of figured it out and kind of brought it back, so, hopefully, we can take a few notes from this game.”

Volkening led Marengo (14-4) with 20 points, while Alex Schirmer added 16 points and nine rebounds. Connor Wascher added 10 points with a pair of 3-pointers.

“I’m proud of our effort,” Wascher said. “Our goal was to compete hard against a team we’re going to see again Friday. We have things to work on, but we also have a lot of positives we can take out of tonight and use.”

Burlington (16-1) hit two 3s late in the first quarter and another early in the second to open a 33-20 lead with 3:00 remaining in the half. On the other end, the Indians struggled against the Rockets’ defensive pressure, committing 12 turnovers.

“They got their hands on a lot of balls, they’re always causing havoc,” Indians coach Nate Wright said. “We

Volkening had a clean look at a 3 with just less than three minutes remaining that could have cut the Rockets’ lead to one, but he said it slightly slipped off his hand and missed. The Rockets got a transition basket on the other end for a 54-48 lead.

“Offensively, we were pretty solid,” Rockets coach Brett Porto said.

“Defensively, other than the second chances, I thought we executed pretty well. [Volkening] is going to get his points with the volume of shots he takes, so we just wanted to make everything really hard, make everything contested.”

Forward Mike Kaluso led the Rockets with 19 points and guarded Volkening for most of the game. Joe Ratzek added 13 and TaVontae Harris tossed in 12.

Schirmer, returning from a brief absence after he was sick, was another bright spot for Marengo, hitting 8 of 13 field goals.

“My guys were able to find me, I was able to get that energy,” Schirmer said. “Even when we were down, our whole team was like, ‘Next play.’ We picked it up in the second half.”

Johnsburg’s usual go-to players struggled in the second game, as well.

Junior Aannah Interrante was held to nine points on 4-of-19 shooting after

scoring a game-high 20 earlier in the day. Kayla Stefka, who scored in double figures against Plainfield East, was held to eight points on one made field goal.

As a team, Johnsburg shot 28 percent against Maine South in a game for seventh place.

“We definitely didn’t come out with energy,” said Interrante, who was named to the all-tournament team.

“We’re obviously not very happy with the outcome. I think we were tired after the first game and didn’t play all that well.”

“I think the energy just wasn’t the same in that second game,” Stefka said.

“I feel like our confidence was down a little bit, too, after that close loss earlier.

Everyone had to play multiple games today, though, so we can’t make excuses.

We have to come out right from the start and play better.”

Although the Skyhawks never wanted to see three losses in four games at DeKalb, they also took away some positives to the level of play of their opponents.

Seeing several Class 3A schools (Johnsburg is 3A) and stronger competition than it might see in the Kishwaukee River Conference was something that

could prove beneficial moving forward.

“When you get back into the grind of the conference schedule, you look back at games like we had this weekend,” Frey said. “You play better competition than you’re used to and play teams you’re not used to playing. These tournaments are becoming really popular because they provide that kind of postseason feel.”

Although Johnsburg trailed by one point in the final minutes against Plainfield East, and only eight at halftime, it knows a more consistent 32 minutes is crucial for success in the second half of the season.

Frey preached that at halftime of the first game, and the Skyhawks responded. The second game’s energy wasn’t there.

“Coming out with more energy is definitely something we need to key on,” Interrante said of what she’s looking for from her team moving forward.

“It’s been a weakness at times this season, and that can really determine how the rest of our season goes.”

Morgan Madsen added a combined 18 points in the two losses Monday for Johnsburg, which will resume KRC play Thursday at Woodstock.

DeKALB – Playing multiple basketball games in one day can have a couple of different impacts.

While it gives teams a chance to gain momentum, there also can be a letdown after a close, hard-fought loss.

That seemed to be the case for the Johnsburg girls basketball team, which lost, 61-43, to Maine South in its nightcap to finish eighth after a five-point defeat earlier in the day to Plainfield East on Monday in the DeKalb MLK Tournament.

After having possession a couple of times with a chance to tie or take the lead late in the 58-53 loss to Plainfield East, the Skyhawks (16-8) committed a couple of key turnovers that proved to do them in.

The Skyhawks showed signs of fatigue in the second game, as they lacked rhythm on both ends of the court.

“I think there’s always a big letdown after a loss like that,” Johnsburg coach Brad Frey said. “It was the second game of the day, in a [different] gym, and you spend all of your energy in the first game and play less than two hours later.

Whip-Purs plan to stick together QB Vincent, WR Hornbeck commit to Robert Morris in Chicago

joestevenson@shawmedia.com Hampshire quarterback Jake Vincent felt a connection with Robert Morris University football coach Jared Williamson and appreciates what the Eagles have going with their 6-yearold NAIA program.

Almost as integral in Vincent’s decision was that his football Jake cohort Jared Hornbeck Vincent also wanted to play for Robert Morris.

The two friends have played sports together since second grade. Vincent led the area in passing the past two seasons; Hornbeck led the area in receptions this season. They work out together, watch game video together, do almost everything together.

And that will not change, because the Whip-Purs’ dynamic duo will play for the Eagles next season. Vincent and Hornbeck recently decided they should finish their football careers together,

and both announced they were headed to the Chicago school.

“There was a lot of thought to it,” Hornbeck said. “We both thought we could excel on and off the field there, so we thought it was the best fit for us. We’ve had a lot of success at the high school level, so it’ll be great to keep that going in college.”

Hornbeck (6-foot, 172 pounds) was a NorthJared west Herald All-Area Hornbeck first-team receiver after posting area-best totals in receptions (66), yards (1,235) and touchdowns (15). Vincent threw for 2,665 yards as a junior and led the area with 2,318 this season. Hornbeck and Vincent put up those numbers in nine games as the 3-6 Whips missed the playoffs.

“We found a lot of success, but I wish our team could have had some more wins,” Hornbeck said.

past two seasons. He had interest from NCAA Division I schools Wyoming and Dayton (which plays in the nonscholarship Pioneer Football League) and D-II’s Northwest Missouri State and Grand Valley State.

“I really liked Coach Williamson.

That’s really why I wanted to go to Robert Morris,” Vincent said. “They’re building something special at Robert Morris. We thought Robert Morris was our best chance to play together at a smaller school.”

Robert Morris will return starting quarterback Kenyatte Allen, who will be a senior. Vincent hopes he can have three years as a starter. Hornbeck, likewise, looks at a receiving corps with one returning starter and hopes to compete right away.

Robert Morris, which plays its home games at Morris Field in Arlington Heights, won the Mid-States Football Alliance last season, then lost to Marian, Indiana, 32-7, in the first round of the NAIA playoffs.

Knobloch sets Marengo girls record for 3s in win NORTHWEST HERALD Belvidere had scouted Marengo sophomore Marissa Knobloch and came out with a special defense for the Indians on Monday night in Belvidere.

It didn’t matter.

Knobloch fired in eight 3-pointers in the first half – a school record for a half and a game – and finished with 37 points as the Marissa Indians defeated the Knobloch Bucs, 63-51, in their nonconference girls basketball game.

Knobloch’s 37 points were two off the school record set in 1999 by Kristan Knake, who went on to play at Northern Illinois University. Marengo improved to 8-10.

“I should be in bed, but I can’t sleep,” Marengo coach Nick Rode said by phone late Monday. “I’m overjoyed, just sitting here smiling. The most impressive part was they were in a trian-

gle-and-two on her, so she did that while she was the main focus of their defense.

I don’t know what her (3-point) percentage was in the first half, but it was probably close to 75.”

Knobloch did not make another 3 in the second half but had two 2-point baskets and was 9 of 13 from the foul line.

“Maybe she used them up a little bit,” Rode said. “I didn’t pull her the whole first half. She got hot, and we just rode that wave. Her first couple were short in the second half. We ran a good zone offense and the girls did a good job getting to the line.”

Jacobs 48, Elk Grove 36: At Elk Grove, the Golden Eagles’ Carly Sidor scored 12 points in a win over Elk Grove. Maggie Grady added eight points, and Nicole Durben contributed seven for Jacobs (89).

Huntley 36, Burlington Central 31: At the DeKalb MLK tournament, Morgan Clausen scored 16 points and Missy Moffett added seven in the Red Raiders’ win over Burlington Central in a consolation game.

Lincoln-Way East 52, Huntley 36: At the DeKalb MLK tournament, Lincoln-Way East handed the Red Raiders a loss in the consolation final. Clausen led Huntley (11-9) with 20 points, going 6 for 7 from the free-throw line. Mallory Moffett scored seven points.

Sox fan Obama gracious to World Series champs

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama, with only days left in office, honored the Cubs, the 2016 World Series champions, Monday afternoon at the White House.

“They said this day would never come,” Obama said as he started his remarks. As he walked into the East Room, the boisterous audience, consisting of the extremely well-connected, chanted in the singsong Chicagoans know well, “Let’s Go, Cubbies!”

Obama, relishing the moment, said he has a chance to say “Something none of my predecessors ever had a chance to say, ‘Welcome to the White House, the World Series champion Chicago Cubs.

“I will say that the Cubs took long enough. I’ve only got four days left,” Obama said.

After the event, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said, “That was the best sports ceremony ever.”

It’s routine for a championship team to be honored by a president. What’s unusual is that Obama sped up the timetable so he could salute the champs from his adopted hometown on his watch.

Obama has been a vocal White Sox fan but was gracious in hosting the Cubs. Cubs president Theo Epstein issued a “midnight pardon” to the president for being a Sox fan.

“Among Sox fans,” Obama said, “I’m the Cubs’ No. 1 fan.”

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who wears No. 44, presented Obama –

the nation’s 44th president – with a No. 44 Cubs jersey with “OBAMA” on the back. When Cubs Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins suggested Obama wear the Cubs jersey, the president smiled and politely declined.

In a more serious note, Epstein told the president: “Thank you for the dignity and integrity with which you served our country.”

In the president’s last official event at the White House, the president explained why sports teams get honored by presidents.

“Sports has a way of changing hearts in a way that politics and business doesn’t,” Obama said.

The event, in the White House East Room, was crawling with Chicagoans, starting with Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s former chief of staff who brought with him his younger brother Ari, the Hollywood agent. Other elected officials included Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan; state Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago; Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.; Democrats Rep. Mike Quigley and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and GOP Rep. Randy Hultgren. Former Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood also was at the ceremony.

State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, D-Chicago, said, “My love for the Cubs is not new, and it’s not a secret. I am just flatout lucky to have Wrigley Field in my district,” she told the Sun-Times.

“I am still floating on air about the Cubs winning the World Series. My admiration for the president is no secret either; seeing President Obama and the Cubs together – it’s a dream come true.

I am just over the moon. Pinch me.”

After three years of varsity football in which he helped build Johnsburg into a winner, it was important to Skyhawks senior running back Alex Peete to attend a college program with a winning tradition.

The record-setting back found his match at Wisconsin-Whitewater. The six-time NCAA Division III national champion received a commitment Monday from the eighth all-time leading rusher in state history.

“It’s Whitewater,” Alex Peete the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Peete said. “They have the best D-III program in the nation. They’ve lost three games in the last three years, which is crazy. I think I have the right mindset for it, as well. I love playing in front of big crowds.”

From 2005 to ’14, the Warhawks reached 10 consecutive D-III championship games, winning six of them, most recently in 2014. Coach Kevin Bullis will enter his third season as coach in 2017.

Peete, a Northwest Herald All-Area first-team running back in 2016, met with Bullis during a visit to the UW-Whitewater campus Monday. Peete also had an offer from Winona State in Minnesota, but meeting with Bullis on Monday swayed his opinion.

“I feel like I fit perfectly with their offense,” Peete said. “The coaching staff is amazing. Coach Bullis is a great guy. I knew we had a connection.”

Peete ran for 6,070 career yards, eighth in state history. His senior year he led Johnsburg with 2,528 rushing yards and 39 touchdowns. The Skyhawks reached their first state championship game, losing, 38-14, to Rochester in the Class 4A final, after winning their first 13 games.

“It’s a great fit,” Johnsburg coach Dan DeBoeuf said. “I know that he’s really liked that school. We did our summer overnight trip to Whitewater, and he really liked it then. He’s always had his eye on Whitewater. It’s great to see how happy he is with making a decision, and I definitely think he feels like it’s the right decision.”

Peete said he plans to study business, although he has not decided on a specific major.

He will join a number of local players on the UW-Whitewater roster. They include Kyle Copeland (Jacobs), Jake Gierlak (Jacobs), Luke Tegtman (Marian Central), Ben Franzen (Hampshire), Mason Fleury (Hampshire) and Dominic Swanson (Huntley).

John Flood (Richmond-Burton) and Tim Regan (Jacobs) just finished their senior seasons for the Warhawks.

Peete said he is ready for the bigger, faster and stronger opponents in the college game.

“I have to come in with a different mindset,” Peete said. “I’m starting from the botJosh Stenger tom now. They’ve got these seniors that have been there and know more than I do. I have to become a freshman again and work my way up the depth chart.”

Huntley’s Stenger to La Crosse: When two coaches from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse made the four-hour drive from La Crosse to Josh Stenger’s house for dinner, Stenger knew the Eagles were committed to him.

On Monday, the Huntley senior made his commitment to the Eagles.

Stenger finished fourth in the 120-pound weight class at the IHSA Class 3A state tournament in 2016 and was a first-team Northwest Herald All-Area performer.

“I really just like the feeling of the team there,” Stenger said. “I felt like it was like a brotherhood. They were really cool, all the guys and the coaches seemed like they really cared and had interest in not only my wrestling career, but also my academic career.”

UW-La Crosse coach Dave Malecek is in his 11th season in charge of the program. Stenger said he’s a positive person who even encouraged Stenger to visit his other top choices.

Ultimately, UW-La Crosse stood out.

He also had an offer from Minnesota State-Mankato. Stenger said he first heard from UW-La Crosse in the spring.

“I really felt a connection with the guys there and with the coaches,” Stenger said. “They made it clear to me that they really wanted me.”

Stenger has not decided on a major yet. He said he likes that the campus is small, yet has an enrollment of more than 10,000 students.

He will join Crystal Lake South graduate Garrett Dziedzic at UW-La Crosse.

Top-line left wing still the missing piece

Hawks reluctant to make a big splash, but might have to to make another Cup run

mlazerus@suntimes.com Against one of the hottest teams in the league, a division rival that was on the verge of passing his Blackhawks for the top spot in the Western Conference, coach Joel Quenneville apparently didn’t think he had 12 forwards worthy of playing.

So he dressed seven defensemen Sunday against the Minnesota Wild and kept sending Patrick Kane over the boards again and again.

It almost worked. Kane was spectacular, but the Hawks squandered his two early goals and lost, 3-2, falling out of first place for the first time since early November. The loss came on the heels of a humiliating 6-0 loss Friday to the Washington Capitals.

But the Hawks don’t panic, nor should they. They know April, May and June are when the games really matter, not January. And the Capitals and Wild have been cautionary tales

about peaking too early in the past.

The Capitals ran roughshod over the NHL last season on their way to the Presidents’ Trophy, only to lose to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round. And the Wild went on a 24-5-1 tear from late January to late March in 2015, only to get swept by the Hawks in the second round.

Patrick Kane So defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk sort of chuckled at the thought that the Hawks’ loss Friday was ‘‘demoralizing.” And although Kane deemed the disappointing weekend a ‘‘wake-up call,” he hardly seemed overwhelmed by it. ‘‘You play two of the better teams in the league and lose, there’s got to be room for improvement, right?” he said.

No, the sky isn’t falling after two mid-January losses. But it doesn’t exactly feel as though the sky is the limit

for this Hawks team, either. It’s starting to look a lot like the 2015-16 squad – far too reliant on Kane’s line and great goaltending. Yes, the defense is deeper than it was last season, but the forwards are even thinner. Last season, it was Marian Hossa who couldn’t seem to find the back of the net. This season, it’s Jonathan Toews.

The solution is clear: The Hawks must acquire a top-six winger before the trade deadline Feb. 28. The domino effect would be massive. Suddenly, Toews (seven goals all season) and Hossa (no goals in nine games after his torrid start) would have the left winger they’ve been looking for since the start of last season.

And if the Hawks can fill that spot, Vinnie Hinostroza can bolster the bottom six, which desperately needs it.

Add Hinostroza and the eventual return of injured Marcus Kruger to the mix, and the Hawks suddenly have four capable lines, with Andrew Desjardins and Jordin Tootoo (who have combined for zero goals and zero assists) as viable extras.

The Hawks have been sniffing around the trade market, but a source said they are hesitant to make a major

move. They like the young players they have and want to see them flourish.

And they’re hosting the draft and want to hoard picks, not deal them away.

It’s almost unthinkable they will trade their first-round pick this year, as they did in 2015 to get Antoine Vermette and 2016 to get Andrew Ladd.

At the same time, though, they quietly have been banking cap space by keeping their roster at 21 players until recalling Nick Schmaltz on Saturday. Capfriendly.com says the Hawks will have more than $3.3 million of cap space available at the deadline. So if they are wiling to part with a roster player and can coax a team into eating some salary, maybe they can land the Toronto Maple Leafs’ James van Riemsdyk, the Colorado Avalanche’s Gabriel Landeskog or Matt Duchene or the Arizona Coyotes’ Martin Hanzal.

They need to try.

The Hawks are very good, but they’re not great. They’re Stanley Cup contenders, but they’re not favorites.

And they have too many defensemen and not enough forwards.

The solution isn’t simple, but it’s obvious: Find that top-line left winger and watch the pieces all fall into place.

Midterm grades are in, and they’re not pretty

jcowley@suntimes.com Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg is running short on superlatives when discussing star Jimmy Butler. ‘‘Great,” ‘‘brilliant” and ‘‘unbelievable” are words Hoiberg has used throughout the first half of the regular season to describe Butler.

But one word he’s not using is ‘‘surprised.” ‘‘Because I know how much time and effort he puts into his offseason workout programs,” Hoiberg said. ‘‘Just how he’s always looking to add to his game. The biggest thing we’ve done more with him this year is put the ball in his hands, especially in the fourth quarter, and let him play the role of our lead facilitator. He’s been really good in that role.”

Butler’s midterm grade is a no-brain A. Here are the grades for the rest of the team: Dwyane Wade: Sure, he’s had some absences, but they all have been excused (sorry, Derrick Rose). His impact might be bigger off the court than on it. Grade: A-.

Taj Gibson: The last soldier standing from the Rose dynasty that never happened. Ask it, and Gibson does it. Grade: A-.

brought in to do – rebound and play like a 7-footer. He’s a rim protector and a reason the Bulls are so good at grabbing offensive rebounds. Grade: B.

Michael Carter-Williams:

Is he an upgrade from Tony Snell? Yes, because he contributes, especially on defense.

But he still is a shooting liability. Grade: B. Rajon Rondo: Based on performance, Rondo gets a C. Then again, can a grade be handed out if the professor was misleading in the lesson?

Grade: B-.

Doug McDermott: His 31

points Sunday were great, but why can’t he be a 20-point threat every game? Grade: C+.

Cristiano Felicio: He has great feet and improving hands, but he still is a onetrick pony around the rim.

Grade: C+.

Nikola Mirotic: There hasn’t been enough improvement from a player general manager Gar Forman overhyped.

Grade: C-.

Jerian Grant: He has had a few moments, including a start in Portland. He’s an interesting athlete, but still has a long way to go. Grade: C-.

Bobby Portis: His dwindling minutes show exactly what the team thinks of him. Playing time doesn’t lie. Grade: D+.

Isaiah Canaan: The 3-point specialist looked like the perfect piece for the second unit early in the season, but he barely is used these days.

Grade: D.

Paul Zipser: Forman has been doing his best to promote him, but this isn’t the German League. He has a bright future – for the Windy City Bulls.

Grade: D. Denzel Valentine: Bad ankles and catching Butler’s flu have hampered him. The rookie has shown some signs, but we need to see more. Grade: Incomplete.

Hoiberg: Do coaches improve? Absolutely. Has Hoiberg done so in his second season? Absolutely. Victories against elite teams aren’t accidental, but neither are losses to below-average opponents.

Grade: C+.

Front office: Unloading Rose was masterful. That saves Forman and vice president John Paxson from a midseason F. But they still have too many missteps on their résumés, including a major one this season with the roster they built. The Bulls lack shooters and athletes. Grade: D-.

Warriors rout defending champion Cavaliers in rematch

OAKLAND, Calif. – Stephen Curry hit five 3-pointers and had 20 points while matching his season best with 11 assists in Golden State’s 126-91 rout of the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday.

Klay Thompson scored 26 points with five 3s for the Warriors, and Draymond Green produced his third triple-double of the season with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. He also equaled his career best with five blocks – and had another dustup with LeBron James in the process.

James had 20 points on 6-of-18 shooting and eight rebounds. He and Green got into their latest altercation with 6:55 left in the first half and the Warriors leading 52-35 when James collided with Green near midcourt, resulting in a flagrant 1 foul on Golden State’s emotional All-Star.

Green reacted by appearing to mock James for flopping.

St. John’s hits 12 3-pointers in win over DePaul

NEW YORK – Malik Ellison hit 5 of 6 3-point attempts and scored a career-high 23 points to help St. John’s end a fourgame slide with a 78-68 victory over DePaul (8-11, 1-5) on Monday night.

Maybe Pace can find a Rodgers for Bears I don’t want to make Bears fans cry any more than they already do on a daily basis, but how about that Aaron Rodgers?

On third-and-20 Sunday, his team holding onto the ledge by a fingertip against the surging Cowboys, Rodgers spun to his left and completed a 36-yard pass to a toe-dragging Jared Cook on the sideline. Mason Crosby came in to kick a 51yard field goal as time expired to send the Aaron Rodgers Packers into the NFC Championship Game.

It feels like forever since the Bears won a game like that, and it actually has been forever since the Bears had a quarterback like that.

I bring this up not to torture you but to give you an opportunity to dream big dreams, dreams that could come true if everything goes right in the NFL draft, if the planets align and if, I don’t know, hunger as we know it is wiped out.

Why not? It happens to other teams.

Is it so out of the realm of possibility that it could happen to the Bears? Before you answer firmly in the negative, consider that the Packers took Rodgers with the 24th pick in the 2005 draft. If you value your sanity at all, pay no

The Bears didn’t believe they needed a quarterback back then. They already had Rex “Is Our Quarterback” Grossman. On the other hand, why did the Packers need another quarterback in 2005 besides Brett Favre? Because smart is in their DNA. We’ve spent the past several weeks arguing about whether the Bears should use the third pick in the April draft to choose a quarterback, and if I know one thing in life, it’s that we’ll spend the next several months arguing about the same thing.

There is no question this time around that the Bears need one, but the early consensus is that the draft is weak for quarterback talent and that taking a QB with the third pick very well could be a reach of disastrous proportions.

But let’s go back to Rodgers as he was coming out of Cal, and maybe we’ll feel better about Notre Dame’s DeShone

Kizer, North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky or Clemson’s Deshaun Watson. Before the 2005 draft, Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel asked NFL scouts what they thought of Rodgers.

Some liked him. Many didn’t. Here’s a sampling from several of those anonymous talent evaluators: • “I think he has a good chance of being a bust. Just like every other (Jeff) Tedford-coached quarterback. Thing I struggle with him is he gets sacked a lot. He doesn’t have great ability to change the release of the football. He’s mechanically very rigid.’’

• “The guys that Tedford has had, what have they developed into? They’re too well-schooled. So mechanical. So robotic. I don’t know if they become good pro players. I think Rodgers is in that same mold.”

• “I don’t like him. He’s a clone of (Joey) Harrington and (Kyle) Boller.

They all throw the same way. What have those guys done? Nothing. If you take him in the second round, fine.

Heady guy. They do a marvelous job of coaching quarterbacks there. I don’t think he’s as good as the top quarterbacks coming out last year.”

• “He’s a system quarterback.

Three-, five-, seven-step guy. Can’t create on his own. Panics under pressure.

Gets flustered easy. I don’t think there’s

a quarterback in the draft worthy of a first-round pick. I’m dead serious. None of them are worth it.”

OK, you get the idea. Scouts make mistakes. They made a colossal mistake on Rodgers. And who’s to say they’re not making a mistake in their assessment of this year’s quarterback class?

Draft experts have downgraded Trubisky, Watson and Kizer so much that many of us take it as gospel that the three aren’t worthy of where the Bears are picking in the first round. But what if one of them is the next Rodgers?

Maybe we’ll look back on this draft as the year the Bears finally had a general manager who knew what he was doing. It didn’t take long for the Packers to realize it in 2005. That’s when new general manager Ted Thompson chose Rodgers in the first round.

No one outside of Halas Hall seems to know what Bears general manager Ryan Pace will do in April. It’s highly possibly he doesn’t know yet. If he likes one of the quarterbacks a lot but is worried about reaching, he might want to take a journey back in time.

Serena cruises into 2nd round

The Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia – For five games in the second set, Serena Williams played almost flawless tennis in her first-round match at the Australian Open.

Then came the rustiness that tends to follow a lengthy layoff, giving Belinda Bencic a glimmer of hope, before Williams regained her composure to win, 6-4, 6-3, Tuesday (in Australia).

The six-time Australian Open champion improved her impressive record in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments to 65-1.

The No. 2-ranked Williams’ priority here is an Open era record 23rd major title. She’s has taken the first step, beating a player who was seeded 12th here last year and reached a career-high No. 7 ranking.

“She was just recently in the top 10.

I knew it would be one of the toughest first-round matches I’ve ever played,” the newly engaged Williams said.

In the second round she’ll meet Lucie Safarova, who beat Yanina Wickmayer, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1.

Bencic got one service break in the first set, but only took two points in the

first three games on Williams’ serve in the second.

Serving for the match at 6-4, 5-1, things changed for Williams. She finished her 2016 after the U.S. Open, resting injuries, and started 2017 with an error-prone loss in New Zealand.

Williams served only her second double-fault of the match to give Bencic a break-point chance, and the Swiss teenager converted it with a crosscourt winning forehand.

Bencic held at love to close the gap, but then faced a match point.

Williams double-faulted again on her first match point, but made no mistake on her second. She finished with 30 winners and 30 unforced errors, eight errors and four double-faults.

Karolina Pliskova and Johanna Konta both made their Grand Slam breakthroughs last year, both prepared for the season’s first major with title runs in Australia and both advanced with straight sets wins.

U.S. Open finalist Pliskova followed her title win at the Brisbane International with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Konta, who won the Sydney International title last week, had a 7-5, 6-2 win over Kirsten Flipkens.
