Loretta Lynch: ‘We have always pushed forward’

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Attorney General Loretta Lynch, in her final speech as head of the Justice Department, praised the work of the Obama administration to advance the dream of justice and said worries of difficult days ahead should be a call for action, not despair.

Speaking in Birmingham, Alabama, just days before leaving office with the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, Lynch praised the work of President Barack Obama and acknowledged – without mentioning Trump by name – some voters’ anxieties for the future.

“I know that while our accomplishments should make us proud, they must not make us complacent. We cannot stop. We have to work. I know that in our pursuit of a brighter future, we still face headwinds. We still face oppositions. We see it. Waves of hatred, waves of intolerance and injustice that are still blowing in this country, and they seem to grow stronger the more that we achieve, Lynch said.

Lynch took the pulpit of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church for a celebration ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The church was the site of a 1963 Ku Klux Klan bombing that killed four girls just weeks after King delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech. The Obama administration this week named the church and other Birmingham civil rights landmarks as a national monument.

Lynch drew parallels between the church bombing that killed the four girls and the massacre of nine people at a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015.

“Fifty years after that we still see our fellow Americans targeted simply because of who they are – not only for their race, but for their religion, sexual orientation and gender identity, as well,” Lynch said.

She said 50 years after the victories of the civil rights movement there are “new attempts to erect barriers to the voting booth.”

Lynch praised the work of the Obama administration and the Justice Department to fight voting restrictions and prosecute hate crimes and to urge community policing tactics.

In an interview Thursday, Lynch, who championed a repair of relations between police and communities, said the federal government must continue to hold police accountable.

Some in the predominantly black congregation and crowd said they were openly mourning the end of the Obama presidency.

“I cried. I cried. I never thought in my lifetime I would live to see the day that there was an African-American president,” Tara Banks said.

Banks brought her granddaughter Kimorah Thomas to the church on her eighth birthday to learn about King’s legacy and hear Lynch, the first female African-American to hold the post of U.S. attorney general.

Lynch said she recognized the anxiety that some have about what is ahead, referencing Trump without saying his name.

“And I have seen the concerns that the voting booth will be moved out of reach, that our hearts will close along with our borders, that a prayer in a different tongue or posture will place one at deadly risk. I have seen the fear that, with the turn of the electoral wheel, so many of us will be seen as children of a lesser God,” Lynch said.

But Lynch added she also has seen the determination of men and women dedicated to the future of the country.

“Yes, these are challenging times and yes, we undoubtedly have more challenges to come. But many of our greatest strides, in equal rights, in human rights and civil rights have come after some of our most heartbreaking losses. ... We are Americans and we have always pushed forward,” Lynch said.

The 60-year-old set off with her colleagues Dec. 2 from Ushuaia in Argentina. The project was a learning experience at sea – aiming to highlight the impact of women in science and introduce new leadership skills.

While on the trip, Trummel said every day was a new and enlightening experience. The group received instruction and lectures, went on field trips, completed leadership training and

watched films, among other activities.

Trummel, who has been to Antarctica three other times, said she found herself often sitting and watching things unfold before her instead of worrying about taking photos or video.

“I really wanted to take a step back and be a really conscious observer of the environment because it’s something we need to protect and preserve,”

Wisconsin-style supper club coming to city

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Dave Perlick, the executive chef at Montarra Grill in Algonquin, is planning to open a new restaurant in Crystal Lake within the next six weeks.

The restaurant will be a Wisconsin-style eatery called M Supper Club.

“The ‘m’ is short for Montarra, because we’re trying to bring our success of the Algonquin restaurant over to Crystal Lake,” Perlick said.

The new restaurant will be at 394 W. Virginia St., the former location of London Pub & Grill. Along with Perlick, the owners of the new restaurant include George Kanellos, Jim Kanellos, Dennis

Koukounaras and Niko Kanakaris.

“We’ve had a lot of success with Montarra Grill over the years and have such a talented team here, so we came to the conclusion it was time to grow,” Perlick said.

M Supper Club’s renovations are about halfway finished, he said, and the restaurant is expected to seat about 170 inside, with an additional 40 seats available during the summer hours when the patio is open.

“The goal is to take a classic dish and give it modern touches,” Perlick said. “We wanted to better the region with higher-quality dining options.”

Some menu items will include a jagerschnitzel, praline-crusted walleye, oysters Rockefeller, homemade hash browns and

brandy-roasted mushrooms.

In addition to the regular menu, the new restaurant will feature a food challenge inspired by a scene in “The Great Outdoors” where actor John Candy tackles eating a 6-pound steak.

“We’re doing a 64-ounce, center-cut, bone-in, rib-eye steak and adding a couple pounds of other items on the plate for our challenge,” Perlick said.

“People also have to finish a thick, chocolate milkshake as a part of it, so the whole thing will be about 96-ounces like in the movie,” Perlick added.

Although it’s a $240 plate, Perlick said it will be free for whoever is able to complete the challenge.

“And I just want to add we’re hiring right now as well,” Perlick said. “Positions we are hiring are servers, hostesses, bussers, among others.”

MCC ranked as 6th most affordable online college

Nationwide rankings done by education research publisher

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – McHenry County College has been ranked as one of the most affordable online colleges in the nation, according to SR Education Group, an education research publisher.

In creating the rankings, SR Education Group researched accredited schools that offer online degree pro-

grams and ranked the top 25 of them based on annual tuition rates.

According to SR Education Group’s research, MCC came in at sixth overall for associate degrees because of its commitment to affordability. MCC’s annual tuition rate was reportedly at $3,570, while the average annual tuition rate of the ranked schools is $4,012.

More than 700 colleges met the ranking’s criteria. To be considered for the rankings, colleges needed to offer at

least 10 fully online degrees, with at least one degree at the bachelor’s or master’s level. MCC offers 11 online associate degrees.

The five schools ranked higher than MCC were Allen County Community College of Kansas, Penn Foster College of Arizona, Washtenaw Community College of Michigan, Southeast Community College of Nebraska and Southeast Technical Institute of South Dakota.

Metra train hits, kills pedestrian in Woodstock NORTHWEST HERALD WOODSTOCK – A man died after he walked in front of a Metra train Sunday evening in Woodstock, according to the Woodstock Police Department.

Woodstock Police Sgt. George Kopulos said police were dispatched to train tracks near the bridge over South Street, just east of Madison

Street, at 6:08 p.m. for a call of a train hitting a pedestrian. Kopulos said the preliminary investigation indicated the man knowingly walked in front of the train. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the family.

All train crossings throughout the city were closed for about two hours while police and fire crews worked the scene. According to a Metra alert,

train No. 719 traveling from Chicago and expected to arrive in Harvard at 6:20 p.m. on Union Pacific’s Northwest line was involved in the crash. It was on the move again about 8:15 p.m.

Passengers were allowed to get off the train in Woodstock once police were finished with the initial investigation.

Two other Union Pacific Northwest line trains also were delayed Sunday night.

WOODSTOCK – Woodstock School District 200 will start accepting applications Friday for its 2017-18 preschool program.

Applications for the program will be accepted through Feb. 24.

District 200 is offering a dual-language program for 4-year-olds along with a tuition-based preschool program. All preschool programs will be taught by Verda Dierzen Early Learning Center’s certified staff.

The dual-language program, which will run five days a week, will accept up to 20 English language learners and up to 20 Spanish language learners. To be considered for this program, a child must be 4 years old by Sept. 1, 2017, and live within the district’s attendance

hprokop@shawmedia.com LAKE IN THE HILLS – Three Lake in the Hills businesses were recognized Thursday, including one that donated time and materials to build raised garden beds at the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry.

The village annually presents the Gordon Larsen Business Achievement Awards to businesses based on customer service, community service and employee treatment.

The award is named after Gordon Larsen, a resident who was influential in shaping the physical and civic landscapes of Lake in the Hills and championed benevolent business operations, according to the village.

Lake in the Hills Village President Paul Mulcahy presented the awards at Thursday’s Board of Trustees meeting.

The village received 154 nominations for 25 different businesses, he said.

Lowe’s Home Improvement, 300 N. Randall Road, received the award for best community service.

“This is kind of getting redundant,” Mulcahy joked as he presented the award. “Lowe’s Home Improvement

Lowe’s was recognized for donating materials and employees’ time to build six 20-foot-long raised garden beds as part of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry’s children’s garden, Mulcahy said. The beds are also wheelchair-accessible, he said.

All produce grown at the garden is donated to the food pantry.

The company has about 140 employees who receive excellent benefits, Mulcahy said, and are given the tools to allow for employee growth and development.

Konrad’s Bakery was recognized for best customer service. The family-owned business specializes in highend, European-style cakes, Mulcahy said, and nominations for the business raved about the care and concern employees give to customers.

Subconsciously, we all want each year to be better than the last. There are so many opportunities for your success with your chamber’s support. Lord Snowdon, ex-husband of Princess Margaret, dies

LONDON – Lord Snowdon, the society photographer and filmmaker who married Britain’s Princess Margaret and continued to mix in royal circles even after their divorce, has died. He was 86.

Buckingham Palace said that Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret’s sister, had been told that he died.

“The Earl of Snowdon died peacefully at home on 13th January 2017,” said Camera Press, the photo agency with which he worked.

One of the country’s most famous photographers, Snowdon was one of the few top-echelon royals to hold down an outside job after he married the queen’s sister in 1960, and his professional reputation grew steadily.

Margaret died in 2002.

Snowdon was admired for his discretion, never speaking with the media about the breakup of the marriage in 1978, and rejecting offers to write a book about it. But over time a number of details about his complicated love life emerged.

Born Antony Armstrong-Jones, he was a slightly bohemian member of London’s smart set and an established society photographer when he and the queen’s sister surprised the country with their engagement in February 1960.

They had met at a London party and managed to keep their courtship a secret in the months that followed, despite intense interest in Margaret’s romantic life.

Unconventional, artistic and not nearly as wealthy as Margaret’s other suitors, Armstrong-Jones lived in a studio in west London and did his own cooking. He was certainly not seen by the public and press as a royal prospect.

The “Jones Boy” married the high-spirited Margaret at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 1960, in the first royal wedding to be televised. Whatever doubts the country might have had

about his suitability were swept aside by general relief that Margaret had, at last, found love. It had been five years since her widely publicized decision to end her romance with divorced war hero Peter Townsend after pressure from church leaders, political figures and her own family.

Armstrong-Jones was named the Earl of Snowdon in October 1961, in time to give a title to their first child, David, Viscount Linley, born the following month. Linley became a successful furniture designer. His sister, Lady Sarah, born in May 1964, became a painter.

Margaret, unlike most of the royal family, shared her husband’s interest in the arts, and the two moved in a circle of creative people at a time when “swinging London” gained a worldwide reputation for music, clothes, films and clubs.

In 1969, Snowdon designed the setting for the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales at Caernarvon Castle in Wales.

Snowdon was born March 7, 1930, the son of lawyer Ronald Armstrong-Jones and Anne Messel, sister of celebrated stage designer Oliver Messel.

Snowdon’s first exposure to the world of celebrity came as a teenager when his uncle Oliver Messel brought Noel Coward and Marlene Dietrich to the hospital to sing to him after he was stricken with polio.

Snowdon was educated at Eton and studied architecture at Cambridge University, where he failed his final exams.

He did an apprenticeship with Bar-

on, the leading society photographer of the day, then set himself up as a theatrical photographer. By the late 1950s, he was doing a considerable amount of work for fashion magazines.

He had a sense of humor and engaging manner that put his subjects at ease, and he brought a new informality to portraits of the royal family.

By the early 1970s, Snowdon’s marriage to Margaret was beset by rumors of infidelity. They separated in 1976 and quietly divorced in 1978.

Snowdon married Lucy Lindsay Hogg, and had a daughter, Frances, in 1979. They divorced in 2000.

Margaret did not remarry, and she died after a stroke in 2002.

In the 1990s, two relationships Snowdon had with other women became public.

After the suicide of 55-year-old journalist Ann Hills in 1997, it was revealed that she had known Snowdon for 20 years, had been a longtime lover and had remained a close friend.

In April 1998, journalist Melanie Cable-Alexander gave birth to a son, Jasper, and said Snowdon was the father.

He did not deny it.

In later years, Snowdon was troubled by the effects of polio, which left him with a slight limp, and he had difficulty standing for any length of time.

He endowed a fund that provides scholarships for disabled students.

Snowdon remained a favorite photographer of the queen long after his marriage to her sister ended in rancor, and he took many portraits of her. Diana, Princess of Wales, was another frequent subject.

Former pro wrestler Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka dies at 73

The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA – Former pro wrestler Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, who earlier this month was found not competent to stand trial in the 1983 death of his girlfriend, has died at his son-in-law’s home in Florida. He was 73.

Attorney Robert Kirwan II said Snuka was taken Sunday to the home near Pompano Beach so that he could spend his last moments there. The family informed him shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday to say he had died, Kirwan said.

Lehigh County Judge Kelly Banach on Jan. 3 dismissed the murder case against the retired WWE star after the defense said he had dementia, was in hospice care in Florida and had six months to live.

Snuka’s daughter, Tamina Snuka, also a WWE wrestler, tweeted Sunday afternoon: “I LOVE YOU DAD” with a

hashtag #RestWell.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, also a WWE star, called it “sad news” in a post on his Twitter page.

Snuka was charged in 2015 with third-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of Nancy Argentino, whose body was found more than three decades earlier in their Whitehall Township hotel room. Prosecutors allege she was beaten, while Snuka maintained she died from a fall.

Authorities reopened the investigation after The Morning Call newspaper raised questions about the case in 2013.

Banach had first ruled last summer that Snuka was not competent to stand trial after his attorney argued the ex-athlete suffers from dementia, partly due to the head trauma sustained over a long career in the ring. Prosecutors countered that Snuka’s brain shows normal signs of aging and suggested he might be feigning symptoms.

Kirwan said Snuka died “due to complications from his ongoing medical problems.”

Snuka wrote about Argentino’s death in his 2012 autobiography, maintaining his innocence and saying the episode had ruined his life.

“Many terrible things have been written about me hurting Nancy and being responsible for her death, but they are not true,” he wrote. “This has been very hard on me and very hard on my family. To this day, I get nasty notes and threats. It hurts. I never hit Nancy or threatened her.”

Senate vows swift action on budget plan

SPRINGFIELD – If last week’s action is any indication, the Democratic and Republican leaders of the Illinois Senate are serious about trying to bust the state’s 18-month budget deadlock – quickly.

Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and Minority Leader Christine Radogno negotiated an ambitious, multi-part plan to end a nearly twoyear battle between Democrats and GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner, which has forestalled an agreed-upon annual state spending plan since 2015.

Promising to act on a package by month’s end, they introduced 13 measures Wednesday that included non-budget-related sweeteners for both sides. By Thursday, they had been rapidly assigned public committee hearings.

The package includes Democrat-friendly ideas such as a minimum-wage hike and an income-tax increase – which many in both parties agree is necessary to pare down a multibillion-dollar deficit. But it also seeks to meet Rauner’s demands for measures he said will improve the business and political climate. There’s legislation to freeze local property taxes,

Chicago police officer fatally shoots fleeing gunman

CHICAGO – A police officer confronted by a fleeing gunman suspected of shooting three people fatally shot the man early Sunday, Chicago police said.

Officers were on routine patrol in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the city’s west side when they heard gunshots and began chasing a 34-year-old man, police said.

“Officers initiated a foot pursuit during which the offender ran to an alley and confronted them with a weapon. As a result of this action, one of the pursuing officers discharged his weapon striking the offender multiple times,” police said in a statement.

Officers requested medical aid for the suspect, police said. The man was later

a must-have for Rauner, and to tighten rules on when injured workers may make claims under the workers’ compensation law.

The Senate put one Rauner wish on the books already. It voted unanimously last week to limit, by Senate rule, its leaders to 10 years at the helm. Radogno promises to expand the idea with a constitutional amendment in the future.

Not only is the timeline aggressive – the Senate is scheduled to be in Springfield only three more days this month, including one reserved for the governor’s State of the State address – but so is the end game. The package of bills includes a pension-reform plan to reduce more than $111 billion in underfunded retirement accounts – a solution that has long eluded lawmakers.

The outstanding question is whether a Senate-approved deal would ultimately pass muster with Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, who has refused to entertain Rauner’s pro-business agenda as part of budget talks.

Here’s a look at other major pieces of the legislation some in the Capitol have nicknamed the “grand bargain”: • Income tax increase: The personal income tax would jump from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent, a plan to generate $4.1 billion a year. With spending cuts,

Democrats argue, that could eliminate what the governor’s office estimates will be a $5.3 billion deficit on the June 30 end of the fiscal year.

• Borrowing to pay down debt: The legislation would allow Illinois to borrow $7 billion by selling bonds to pay off overdue bills, which on Friday totaled $10.7 billion. The loan would get the state back to paying vendors and service providers within 30 days of receiving their bills.

• Covering costs: The plan includes $694 million to cover expenses for the first half of 2017 for seven agencies, including prisons and the Human Services Department. A six-month, temporary budget agreed to last summer expired Jan. 1, and the state is back to operating without appropriations.

• Pension reform: The proposal would eliminate pensions for future legislators. It aims to save up to $1 billion a year by offering what Cullerton has termed “consideration” – essentially a choice between how future pay raises figure into retirement income or whether pensioners receive cost-of-living adjustments in retirement.

• Teacher pensions: The measure would move Chicago’s responsibility for paying the employer’s portion of teachers’ pensions to the state – a $215 million obligation for 2017 alone.

That would remedy a long-running complaint about fairness from cashstrapped city officials, since the state already picks up the employer portion for teachers outside the city.

• Gambling expansion: Similar to a contentious proposal from previous years, the plan would create a landbased casino in Chicago and add riverboat casinos in Lake County, Rockford, the south suburbs of Chicago, Danville, and in Williamson County, in southern Illinois, as well as giving horse racing tracks a piece of the action by permitting slot machines at Arlington Heights, Cicero and Collinsville.

• Workers’ compensation: Democrats have argued they made important changes to the injured-workers program in 2011 and that the insurance industry hadn’t caught up to those cost-saving measures. This plan would further restrict claims when injuries are accidents, set maximum compensation rates and limit physical therapy, among other things.

• Minimum wage: The minimum wage would increase from $8.25 an hour to $9 on July 1, then by 50 cents each year until 2021, when it will be $11. According to the U.S. Labor Department, the wage exceeds $8.25 in 21 places outside Illinois, including the District of Columbia, which is tops at $11.50.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident, police said. It said the officer who fired the shots will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days.

Winter a good time for bird watching in Illinois

KANKAKEE – There are a lot of things that can’t be done in Illinois during the winter, but bird watching isn’t one of them.

Chris Gutmann of the Isle a la Cache Museum said that there are birds that can’t be seen any other time of year – starting with the common redpoll that was spotted last year at Isle a la Cache after making the trip south from the tundra of northern Canada or Alaska.

The Daily Journal reported that snowy owls and northern harriers make the trip from the north to Will County this time of year, and it turns out that bald eagles are a lot easier to spot in the winter as they fly up and down area rivers in search of food.

PARIS – Sending a forceful message to Israel’s prime minister and the incoming Trump administration, dozens of countries called Sunday on Israel and the Palestinians to revive work toward long-elusive peace – including an independent Palestinian state.

The closing declaration at a Mideast peace conference in Paris urged both sides to “officially restate their commitment to the two-state solution” and disassociate from voices that reject this.

It also warned them against taking one-sided actions that could hurt talks, an apparent reference to Israeli settlement building.

While the Palestinians welcomed Sunday’s declaration, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the conference “rigged” and cooked up behind Israel’s back to force it to accept conditions against national interests.

WARREN, Mich. – Thousands of people showed up in freezing temperatures on Sunday in Michigan to hear Sen. Bernie Sanders denounce Republican efforts to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law, one of dozens of rallies Democrats staged across the country to highlight opposition.

President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to overturn and replace the Affordable Care Act,

and majority Republicans in Congress this week began the process of repealing it using a budget maneuver that requires a bare majority in the Senate.

“This is the wealthiest country in the history of the world. It is time we got our national priorities right,” Sanders told the Michigan rally.

VALLETTA, Malta – Tens of thousands of people seeking better lives are expected to trek across deserts and board unseaworthy boats in war-torn Libya this year in a desperate effort to reach European shores by way of Italy.

More than 181,000 people, most so-called “economic migrants” with little chance of being allowed to stay in Europe, attempted to cross the central Mediterranean last year from Libya, Africa’s nearest stretch of coast to Italy. About 4,500 died or disappeared.

Hundreds already have taken to the sea this month, braving the winter weather. In the latest reminder of the journey’s perils, more than 100 people were missing off Libya’s coast over the weekend after a migrant boat sunk.

NEW YORK – The outgoing CIA director charged on Sunday that Donald Trump lacks a full understanding of the threat Moscow poses to the United States, delivering a public lecture to the president-elect that further highlighted the bitter state of Trump’s relations with American intelligence agencies.

John Brennan’s pointed message on national television came just five days before Trump becomes the nation’s 45th president amid lingering questions about Russia’s role in the 2016 election even as the focus shifts to the challenges of governing.

“Now that he’s going to have an opportunity to do something for our national security as opposed to talking and tweeting, he’s going to have tremendous responsibility to make sure that U.S. and national security interests are protected,” Brennan said on “Fox News Sunday,” warning that the president-elect’s impulsivity could be dangerous.

“Spontaneity is not something that protects national security interests,” Brennan declared.

Trump, who has unleashed a series of aggressive tweets against the U.S. intelligence community and his political rivals in recent weeks, did not respond to Brennan’s criticism.

Among Trump’s immediate challenges: the United States’ complicated relationship with Russia, crafting an affordable health care alternative that doesn’t strip coverage from

millions of Americans, and growing questions about the legitimacy of his presidency.

Civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., is among several Democrats in Congress who vowed to skip Trump’s inauguration, charging that Russian interference in the 2016 election delegitimizes his presidency.

“There will be many more members who join us in this decision,” Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., wrote Saturday on his Facebook page.

Trump’s lieutenants pushed back hard Sunday in a round of television interviews.

“I think it’s incredibly disappointing and I think it’s irresponsible for people like himself to question the legitimacy of the next United States president,” incoming White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said of Lewis on ABC’s “This Week,” insisting that Republicans did not question the legitimacy of President Barack Obama’s victory eight years ago. Vice President-elect Mike Pence said on “Fox News Sunday” that he hopes Lewis will change his mind and attend.

Priebus later acknowledged that conservatives – led by Trump himself – spent years questioning Obama’s eligibility to serve as president, suggesting he was not born in the United States.

Trump has done little to encourage unity in recent days, instead inflaming tensions with his critics through a series of tweets. The incoming president tweeted Saturday that Lewis should pay more attention to his “crime ridden” Atlanta-area district, adding that the civil rights leader was “all talk.”

The final days of the circus

The Associated Press SARASOTA, Fla. – Goodbye to death-defying feats – daring young men (and women) on the flying trapeze, whip-wielding lion tamers, human cannonballs. Goodbye to the scent of peanuts and popcorn, the thrill of three rings, the jaunty bum-bum-dadadada of circus music.

Send out the clowns. The Big Top is coming down – for good.

On Saturday, officials of the company that owns the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus announced that it will close in May, ending a 146-year run that dates back to a time before automobiles or airplanes or movies, when Ulysses S. Grant was president and minstrel shows were popular entertainment.

What killed the circus? There are many suspects: increased railroad costs. Costly court battles with animal rights activists that led to an end to elephant acts – and the fact that some people didn’t want to see a show without elephants.

But mostly, in an era of Pokemon Go, online role playing games and YouTube celebrities, the “Greatest Show on Earth” doesn’t seem so great.

“It’s been through world wars, and it’s been through every kind of economic cycle and it’s been through a lot of change,” said Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, owner of the Ringling Bros. “In the past decade there’s been more change in the world than in the 50 or 75 years prior to that. And I think it isn’t relevant to people in the same way.”

For a long time, the circus was more than relevant – it was the stuff that dreams were made of.

The first circuses were created in Europe; the American twist would be canvas tents that allowed mobile troupes to go to the far-flung audiences of the 19th century.

Phineas Taylor Barnum’s traveling menagerie was wildly popular, while the five Ringling brothers performed juggling acts and skits in Wisconsin.

Eventually, Barnum, the Ringlings and another performance-minded businessman named James Bailey pooled their resources and knowledge. Some of the early performances were merely zoos on wheels and a few human oddities, but over time, the acts became truly spectacular – attractions like Jumbo, touted as the world’s largest elephant.

impresario John Ringling’s mansion, art and circus collection in Sarasota – said that the circus’ impact on small town America is often overlooked.

“That wonderful show that you can see in Madison Square Garden crisscrossed the country and ended up in San Francisco. And every place in between saw the same thing,” she said.

“In the 1880s, especially, here you had this huge colossal canvas city that tracked across the country. It brought the wonders of the world to your door.

You didn’t have to go to Africa or Asia to see the animals.”

The circus also heralded societal changes, she said. Women became performers around the turn of the 20th century (although there would be no black ringmaster until 1999 or a female ringmaster until 2016).

When the circus came to town, kids dreamed of running away to join it and its ever-changing roster of stars: the sad-faced clown, Emmitt Kelly; the daredevil trapeze act, the Flying

Wallendas; Gunther Gabel-Williams, blond-maned and fearless in the ring with the big cats.

The circus was so important to home-front morale that President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave Ringling Bros. special permission to use the rails during World War II. “The circus is the only ageless delight that you can buy for money,” Ernest Hemingway wrote in a threepage essay for the Ringling Bros. program in 1953. “It is the only spectacle I know, that, while you watch it, gives the quality of a truly happy dream.”

But as the 20th century went on, kids became less enthralled. Movies, television, video games and the internet captured young minds. The circus didn’t have savvy product merchandising tie-ins or Saturday morning cartoons to shore up its image. After 1956, the circus no longer performed under tents, moving to arenas.

The public grew conflicted about animal acts. Circuses without ani-

mals – such as Cirque du Soleil – were smaller and growing in popularity.

Animal rights activists put pressure on cities where the circus toured.

Los Angeles and Oakland prohibited the use of bull-hooks by elephant trainers. Asheville, North Carolina, banned wild or exotic animals from performing in the city-owned stadium.

In 2014, Feld Entertainment won $25.2 million in settlements from groups including the Humane Society of the United States, ending a 14-year legal battle over allegations that circus employees mistreated elephants.

Kenneth Feld testified about the elephants’ importance to the show at that 2009 trial.

“The symbol of the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ is the elephant, and that’s what we’ve been known for throughout the world for more than a hundred years,” he said.

Asked whether the show would be the same without elephants, Feld replied, “No, it wouldn’t.”

And, it wasn’t. Feld Entertainment removed the elephants in 2016, sending all 40 of them to their Center for Elephant Conservation in Florida.

Ticket sales plummeted. The circus, already an afterthought for many, receded further in the public mind.

ocrats might resist any overtures from Trump, though he said total resistance would not serve his party well either.

Advisers and others who have spoken with Trump since the election say that despite his combative public presence during the transition, he’s aware of the grand sweep of history as he approaches the presidency. He’s told friends that he’s drawn to both the ambition and style of Presidents Ronald Reagan, a Republican, and John F. Kennedy, a Democrat.

During a lunch with presidential historian Douglas Brinkley and other guests at his South Florida club, Trump said he was thinking about spending his first night in the White House sleeping in the famed Lincoln Bedroom. A participant in the lunch first recalled the conversation and Brinkley confirmed its accuracy.

Several people detailed their recent interactions with Trump on the condition of anonymity in order to disclose private discussions with the president-elect.

Trump is said to have become particularly fixated on veterans issues, evaluating numerous candidates to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs before settling on David Shulkin, an Obama nominee who is a VA undersecretary.

“at least 100 people” for the job, though aides said that was an exaggeration.

Between meetings at Trump Tower and Mar-a-Lago in Florida – and sometimes during them – Trump is said to be constantly making and taking calls on his personal cellphone from lawmakers, foreign leaders, aides and journalists.

But any behind-the-scene diligence and focus has largely been overshadowed by Trump’s remarkably public battles – against the intelligence agencies, Hillary Clinton, actress Meryl Streep and, over the weekend, Lewis.

One of the biggest questions facing Trump as he prepares to take office is how his confrontational and unpredictable style will affect his ability to enact his agenda and manage the inevitable crises he will face. He has the benefit of a Republican-led Congress, but potential intraparty disagreements loom over spending and entitlements.

Obama, who has been offering advice to Trump both publicly and privately since the election, questioned whether a president can be “improvisational” in office. But in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” he also suggested his successor’s unorthodoxy should not be misjudged.

“Don’t underestimate the guy,” Obama said. “He’s going to be the 45th president of the United States.”

WASHINGTON – After 10 weeks, dozens of tweets and one rollicking news conference, Donald Trump’s transition into the White House has left little doubt that the man Americans elected in November is the president they’ll get.

The immense responsibilities of the office and the daunting decisions that await Trump when he takes office Friday have not appeared to change the confrontational, divisive Republican.

Just days away from his inauguration, Trump is still litigating old campaign fights and picking new ones with intelligence agencies and Rep. John Lewis, the Georgia Democrat and civil rights movement veteran. Trump is refusing to be boxed in by the conservative ideology his party prefers and he’s battling with journalists, yet still craves their attention.

To supporters, Trump’s handling of this transition period is proof that the political novice-turned-president-elect plans to follow through on his campaign promises to take a sledgehammer to Washington’s traditional ways.

“The American people voted for change,” Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said. “He is the instrument of that change.”

It’s clear, however, that a solid majority of Americans are not behind him.

Trump is poised to enter the Oval Office with a far lower approval rating – 42 percent – than his three predecessors, according to Gallup, which only has comparable data going back to 1992.

The previous lowest was George W. Bush, who won positive marks from 59 percent during his transition to office.

Bush, like Trump, also lost the popular vote in a tightly contested race.

Gallup found just 44 percent of those questioned approve of the way the incoming president has handled his transition, compared with 83 percent approval of Barack Obama’s transition.

Sixty-one percent approved of Bush’s transition.

That leaves a hefty task ahead for Trump, who must take the stage on Friday and, after swearing the oath, address perhaps his largest, broadest audience to date. Presidents typically call for unity and common purpose.

David Axelrod, a longtime political adviser to Obama, cast doubt on whether that was something Trump could do. He pointed to Trump’s postelection “thank you” tour that took the Republican only to states he won.

“It might not be within his emotional range to be a unifying figure,” Axelrod said. He acknowledged that some Dem-

Hate crime charges are appropriate The decision to charge four young adult African-Americans in Chicago with hate crimes and other felonies for the abduction and torture of an 18-year-old white student with special needs was the correct one.

The case is especially notorious because of the depravity of the crime and the brazenness of the perpetrators. The victim, from Crystal Lake, was cut on the scalp, burned with cigarettes and beaten repeatedly while gagged and bound. They also heckled the victim with anti-white racial epithets and denunciations of President-elect Donald Trump.

The images of the beating show a terrified man who will be feeling the mental effects of the trauma for years to come. He was reportedly beaten for hours by the merciless quartet in a residential apartment building.

The assailants broadcast 30 minutes of the torture sessions on Facebook Live. In doing so, the four sadists lost the advantage of anonymity that criminals usually strive to maintain. Getting caught means losing not only their personal freedom but also access to the social media that made them feel fulfilled.

Today, Jordan Hill, 18, Tesfaye Cooper, 18, Brittany Covington, 18, and Tanishia Covington, 24, are facing charges that could send them to prison for the next 30 years.

They’re young, but they’re also old enough to understand the implication of their actions and go to prison for it. After all, they tortured an acquaintance and tried to generate fame from his humiliation and pain. Now they have more fame than they can ever deal with.

The fact that the four perpetrators are African-American doesn’t exempt them from hate crime charges. It shows that even racial minorities can be charged with hate crimes, especially when they make an issue of the victim’s race. Was the victim chosen solely because of his race, or did the fact that he has developmental issues play into why he was kidnapped? Either way, it looks like a hate crime to everyone but the most cynical defense lawyer.

Fortunately, prosecutors in Chicago recognize a hate crime when they see one and have charged the four accordingly.

Voters again don’t have a say Voters on Chicago’s South Side didn’t have a choice last year in the race for the 27th House district. Longtime Rep. Monique Davis, D-Chicago, briefly faced a challenge from Justin Slaughter, but he dropped out before the primary. Davis ran unopposed in the November election.

Then just before Christmas, she filed paperwork to retire from the seat she has held since 1987. But voters won’t pick her replacement. Local Democratic leaders did it for them. A handful of Chicago aldermen and suburban township committeemen met privately and selected Slaughter, a Chicago resident who works for the Cook County Board, to fill Davis’ seat.

Surprise, 27th District voters!

You have a new state rep.

It’s a maddening pattern repeated by lawmakers from both parties: They resign midterm or

just before or after an election when it’s too late for someone else to compete for the seat. The timing triggers a process that allows local power brokers to choose the next lawmaker.

Roughly one-third of the 177 lawmakers serving in the House and Senate first got their seats in the General Assembly because they were appointed, not elected.

An appointed lawmaker still has to run for the seat in the next election cycle, but he or she gets a head start, sometimes nearly a full term, in Springfield. They gain access to staff, campaign donors and special interest groups. Their political patrons prop them up by giving them popular, noncontroversial bills to sponsor. They have all the benefits of incumbency, including campaign lawyers, advice and money.

That is, they have a built-in advantage over challengers.

Which is why more than half of states require a special election when a lawmaker steps down.

That gives voters the opportunity to choose their representatives, and it discourages elected officials from stepping down midterm.

Switching to that system in Illinois would require a change to the state constitution. Fat chance. Legislative leaders and insiders have influence over who gets appointed, and they aren’t eager to cede that power to voters. That’s why they’ve refused to let voters weigh in on other constitutional changes, such as term limits or redistricting reform.

The result is a General Assembly populated by so-called representatives who owe their jobs to party bosses, not to voters. No one should be surprised when they act like it.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

5. Can Trump use Democrats to whipsaw his own party? Trump obviously cares much more about getting a deal to crow about than advancing any policy objectives. That opens up the possibility of all sorts of horse-trading with Democrats. Pick an older, more moderate Supreme Court justice, and Dems will vote for his infrastructure bill. Why not?

Include coverage for abortion and Medicaid expansion to get Trumpcare. Why not? The combinations are endless.

6. How does Trump respond to his first foreign policy crisis? If Trump goes on Twitter rants, makes rash ultimatums, appears indecisive or backtracks on American commitments, he will damage his standing abroad and at home. Alternatively, if he projects calm, seriousness and perseverance, he could re-calibrate America’s image in the world, signaling that the Obama era is over.

7. Does the media stand tall? If legitimate news organizations are dogged and abide by ethical standards, refuse to give Trump a club to hit them with or a free pass to escape accountability, and refuse to be intimidated, Trump may after a few years begin to wilt under pressure (or, more likely, explode in frustration). In that regard it remains to be seen whether campaign flacks prepared to say anything will serve the president well in the White House.

8. How does Trump handle setbacks? Every president loses some – bills that fail, nominees who don’t get confirmed, etc. There will be times when staff or Congress or courts tell him “no.” As a candidate he could indulge in public tantrums; as president he cannot. The ability to maintain one’s equilibrium and restraint to avoid burning bridges with those whose help you will need later are keys to a successful presidency. Trump doesn’t take defeat well - and his tendency to blame others and lash out at underlings may work against him in the public sector.

9. Can he be a mourner in chief? Like it or not, the president has become a source of empathy and reassurance in times of tragedy. Trump cares little for others’ feelings – if he even recognizes they have them. As a candidate, he could holler “I was right!” when a terrorist attack like Orlando happened. As president, that reaction will be disastrous. On a more personal level, can he comfort grief-stricken parents or calm survivors after a natural disaster?

10. Will Trump learn to stop dividing Americans? Trump won by pitting working-class whites against immigrants and “elites.” His rhetoric served to inflame passions after police shootings. He enters office with one of the worst approval ratings in history. Unless he can unite rather than subdivide and inspire rather than berate, his approval will sink, he’ll lose his political mojo and his party will suffer in the midterms.

Friday, President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in. More than most presidencies, uncertainty (for some, panic) may be the defining sentiment as the country embarks on a journey that may test America’s democratic principles, decency and common sense. We have elected someone who has very little of any of those three precious commodities. Honesty demands that we all concede we have no idea whether he’ll be among the worst presidents (perhaps not even finishing his term), remarkably mediocre or a surprising success. Regardless, we do think the following will determine the course of the presidency: 1. Do the multiple power centers and presence of so many people new to government create a chaotic, dysfunctional White House? To be fair, other presidents have been plagued with staff problems, fired people (even the chief of staff), gone back to the drawing board, and restaffed and reorganized the White House. A year from now, in all likelihood there will be some new faces, or even an entirely new org chart. What will be critical for Trump is to minimize the chaos at the start of his tenure, when he has the greatest chance to accomplish his aims. If confusion, miscommunication, backbiting and gridlock prevent him from delivering a clear message, his presidency won’t get off the ground.

2. Do Trump’s ethical outrages swamp his presidency? Predictably, Republicans are declining to challenge Trump on his phony “blind trust” and refusal to sell assets. Democrats rightfully may object to his snubbing of the emoluments clause – or even file articles of impeachment – but the test will come when and if the public sees real instances of pay-toplay, self-enrichment or foreign-influence peddling.

Should more come to light about his connection to Russia, Trump may spend the rest of his term under a cloud of intrigue and suspicion.

3. Will Trump get off his Vladimir Putin obsession? In confirmation hearings last week, his nominees for State, Defense and the CIA all supported the intelligence finding that Russia was behind the election hacks and disinformation campaign; all spoke highly of the intelligence agency; all identified Russia as an adversary; all refused to accept Russian occupation of Georgia and Ukraine; and all refused to excuse Putin’s egregious human rights record. In the face of that, and with widespread worry that Putin really does have his hooks into Trump, he may choose to defy expectations and chart a much tougher course on Russia policy than his predecessor. Then again, he may do real damage to the NATO alliance, disregard American values, ignore human rights atrocities and allow Russia to obtain unprecedented influence in the Middle East.

If he chooses to, he will be isolated from his own national security team, both parties in Congress and voters.

4. How does he escape the Obamacare box? If Republicans repeal major elements of Obamacare, leave the system hanging by a thread, panic its beneficiaries and incur the wrath of voters, they may blow their chance to make good on their promise to “repeal and replace.” Whether Trump sticks with Republicans in Congress as finger-pointing and criticism rain down on Americans remains an open

Teenage boys also should be given the HPV vaccine Dear Doctor: My teenage daughter got the HPV shot. Should my son get it as well?

Dear Reader: The vaccine against HPV infection initially was created for females younger than 26 to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Human papilloma virus, or HPV, has been shown to be the cause of virtually all cervical cancer cases in women. Thus, if you decrease the possibility of infection with HPV, you would decrease the rates of cervical cancer, a disease diagnosed in 12,000 to 13,000 women in the United States each year. That’s all for the good among females, but your question – a logical one – was about the benefit to males.

In men, HPV infection can lead to penile cancers, anal cancers and oral cancers. It has been estimated that 70 percent of cancers of the oropharynx are related to HPV. If that is the case, HPV-related cancers are diagnosed in about 11,000 men in the U.S. per year, so the vaccine would appear to have benefit for males as well.

The other benefit of the vaccine – for both men and women – is the prevention of genital warts. These warts are not life-threatening, but they’re more than a nuisance to the people who get them.

The Gardasil vaccine, the most common HPV vaccine, protects against four types of HPV. In addition to protecting against HPV types 16 and 18, which cause many HPV-related cancers, the vaccine also protects against types 6 and 11, which cause 90 percent of genital warts.

In addition, by giving your son the HPV vaccine, you also will decrease the likelihood the virus will be passed on to other people. Providing the vaccine to boys nationwide will lead to less HPV in the community, which will in turn lead to a decrease in cervical, penile, anal and oral cancers.

The biggest problem with the HPV vaccines is the rate of vaccinations. Only 6 of 10 adolescent girls have started the HPV vaccine series, and only 5 of 10 adolescent boys have started it. As there is a two- to three-shot regimen for these vaccines, I can understand if your son does not want to get the vaccine simply to prevent a hypothetical cancer or wart.

However, as a society, we vaccinate against many other illnesses at a much higher rate even when the incidence of those illnesses is quite low. HPV is a very common infection and leads to multiple cancers and genital warts. I’m glad your daughter received the vaccine. Your son should get it too.

DEAR ABBY am a 58-yearold female. My Jeanne mother passed Phillips away in my home almost exactly a year ago. I took care of her for the last three years of her life. After she died, my brother and his wife came to my home at 1:30 p.m. The funeral home didn’t arrive to pick her up until 8:30 that night.

Later that evening, after my mom was gone and my brother and his wife left, my daughter came to me and announced that my sister-inlaw secretly had taken pictures of Mom in the body bag on the stretcher as she was being wheeled out of my home. She didn’t know my daughter had seen her.

I am furious, horrified and hurt beyond description. My mother always liked to look nice and made a special effort to look good for a picture. The coroner had told me to go into another room when they were taking her because he said I wouldn’t want that as my last memory of her.

I have never said anything to my sister-inlaw, but I can’t seem to let this go. It’s killing me. Am I overreacting? Please, I need your advice. – Missing Mom Dear Missing Mom: I truly am sorry for your loss, but you may be overreacting. Not everyone grieves in the same way, and similarly, not everyone feels the same way about taking pictures of deceased loved ones. During Victorian times the practice was quite common.

I don’t know why your sister-in-law felt compelled to take the photos, but it could have been a gesture of love and respect. If you want to know why she did it, you calmly should ask her and let her explain.

This week, let’s look at the candidates for the Yeh Bros. Best Bid Deal of the Year award from the International Bridge Press Association. (Unfortunately, all of the declarer-play candidates are too complicated for this length of column. Shortly, I will send them out to subscribers to my website: www.bridgeforeveryone. com.)

First, let’s see what a cruel game bridge can be. Sitting North-South were world champions Steve Robinson and Peter Boyd. The deal occurred in the Norman Kay Platinum Pairs last March in Reno.

Three clubs showed four controls: two aces, or one ace and two kings, or four kings. Three no-trump was natural and forcing. Four clubs was Puppet Stayman. Four spades guaranteed a five-card suit. Five hearts was an artificial slam-try in spades.

Six clubs was a grand-slam try. Seven clubs suggested a final contract. Seven hearts asked North to bid seven no-trump if he had clubs headed by the queen-jack.

Note that seven no-trump would have made if clubs had been 3-2, but seven spades was better.

Boyd won trick one with his heart ace, drew trumps and turned to clubs. When they split 4-1, South ruffed the fourth round, establishing a discard for his heart loser on the fifth club. But that only got him up to 12 tricks: five spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs. He also needed the diamond finesse, but that lost and the contract went down one.

East-West gained a lucky 11.5 out of 13 matchpoints.

major victory for the well-being of young arms is causing some logistical concerns for small-school baseball coaches.

Few will argue against the health benefits of the IHSA pitch-count limits, which became official in December.

The rule is in place to protect pitchers from being overworked. But small schools with fewer players might have trouble adjusting to the mandated rest days.

The pitch-count rule limits any pitcher to a maximum of 105 pitches in one day. There is a sliding scale for mandated rest days. A player who throws 31 pitches is required to take one day off. A player who throws between 76 and 105 pitches is required to rest for four days before pitching again.

Last year, Alden-Hebron, which co-ops with Faith Lutheran, had 15 players on the roster, six of whom pitched regularly.

Schools test IHSA pitch-count logging system

IHSA assistant executive director Sam Knox, who oversees baseball, said a few select schools across the state are testing a new pitch-count logging system. With pitch-count limits going into effect this season, the IHSA has said it will have an online logging system ready by the start of the season.

Knox said the logging system the IHSA is working on is within the IHSA’s schools and officials center, which coaches already use to rate umpires online. When a coach enters a player’s pitch-count after a game, the system will provide coaches with a five-day forecast for how much a player is allowed to throw in

the coming days.

“It takes a lot of thinking and the paperwork out of it,” Knox said. “There’s no guess-work involved.”

The program also will allow coaches to see pitch logs for all the teams across the state.

This allows a coach to know how many pitches an opposing player can throw in an upcoming game.

“The other component is kind of a checks and balances,” Knox said.

Crystal Lake Central senior Cole Barkocy likely would have received interest from most NCAA Division I schools he approached about running.

Barkocy did not correspond with many, however, because he found what he wanted in November just south of where he took fifth in the Cole Barkocy Class 2A boys race at the IHSA Cross Country State Meet.

Barkocy visited Bradley and found everything he wanted – a knowledgeable coaching staff, a strong team and reliable back- Griffin Bright ground information from his host, freshman Michael Hahndorf of McHenry.

A two-time Class 2A All-State runner, Barkocy committed to Bradley two weeks ago and will sign his Andrew National Letter of In- Engelking tent in April. He will run cross country and track and plans on majoring in business.

“I really didn’t pursue a ton of other schools,” Barkocy said. “Shortly after the state meet (in early November) I went on a visit, I met with the [Bradley] coaches, and I fell with the school.

The coaches are young guys. The head coach [Darren Gauson] is about 30.

They’re really humble guys who are extremely focused and have big goals.”

It helped Barkocy having Hahndorf, against whom he raced for three years, as a host.

Barkocy originally looked at the Air Force Academy and Utah State because he was interested in becoming a pilot. He decided to take a different path, and Bradley jumped to the lead.

Bradley has won back-to-back Missouri Valley Conference championships.

Barkocy led the Tigers to the Fox Valley Conference title this season and went on to take fifth in the state meet at Peoria’s Detweiller Park. He finished 13th as a sophomore.

“I didn’t have the season [this year] I was expecting,” Barkocy said. “I kind

of struggled through the season, I was able to pull it together a little bit for the state meet. I think the coaches were looking more at my 3,200 [meters] time from last spring.”

Barkocy had two sub-9:20 times in the 3,200 before an injury and sickness held him back the rest of the track season. He hopes to have a good bounceback season before heading to Peoria. “[Bradley coaches] brought in a huge recruiting class for next year,” Barkocy said. “They have seven guys, five from Illinois, they all ran about the same times as me. It will be a great group to train with.”

From South to St. X: Crystal Lake South will be sending two more baseball players to St. Xavier University, an NAIA school on the south side of Chicago, next year, which will make four ex-Gators playing for the Cougars.

Utility man Griffin Bright and right-handed pitcher Andrew Engelking will go to St. Xavier next year, joining Griffin’s brother Garrett and John Constantino, who will be sophomores with the Cougars this spring.

Griffin Bright played infield and outfield for the Gators, who tied for the FVC Valley Division championship. Engelking was in the starting rotation.

“They consider themselves brothers and friends, it’s a neat thing to have,” Gators coach Brian Bogda said.

“That’s rare at a four-year school to have that many guys. It will be neat for Garrett and Griffin to play together.”

Garrett Bright started at shortstop and hit cleanup for St. Xavier last season; he was the Northwest Herald Player of the Year in 2015. Constantino was recruited as a pitcher, but wound up playing a lot of outfield. Bogda said he told the Cougars’ coaches they should look at Constantino as a hitter as well.

St. Xavier saw Garrett Bright after his junior season in the Chicagoland Classic All-Star Game, playing for the Fox Valley Conference. Bogda said Garrett Bright and Constantino are close friends, plus Constantino has a grandparent who lives close to St. Xavier. The Cougars improved to 30-26 last season, 17 more wins than in 2015.

“Garrett and Johnny had an opportunity to go in and play right away,” Bogda said. “Coach [Rocco] Mossuto has done a really good job. They do a good job recruiting our area.”

Forget politics; White House visit a must

CHICAGO – When a championship team’s top officials have drastically split political allegiances, what’s an organization to do when the president calls after the most fractious election in generations?

“Once you’re invited, you go,” said politically conservative Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, whose brother and co-owner Todd Ricketts has been selected to join president-elect Trump’s commerce department.

“There’s no big conspiracy here,” said team president Theo Epstein, a Hillary Clinton supporter who attended President Barack Obama’s farewell speech Tuesday in Chicago.

In fact, despite how long it seemed to take the Cubs to accept the monthsold invitation to visit the White House on Monday, Epstein said he would have had no problem attending the celebration at a Trump White House later in the year, either.

“I’m, like, giddy to be able to get invited on the trip,” he said. “Tom [Ricketts] summed it up best with that one-liner: No matter your politics, when you get invited to the White House, you go.

“Everyone I’ve talked to is super excited about it. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and meaningful [with the Walter Reed visit included].”

The Wildcats have won three straight. Their last conference victory of 20 or more points came last season in a 98-59 rout on Feb. 27 against Rutgers.

Iowa (11-8, 3-3) entered Sunday averaging 83 points a game but was stifled from start to finish, shooting 35.3 percent.

Peter Jok, who led the Big Ten with 22.9 points a game, was held to four points, snapping a streak of 22 games in which he scored in double figures.

Miles Bridges paced Michigan State with 24 points on 9-for-12 shooting, and he was 4 for 5 from beyond the arc.

Then the Hoosiers got back to business.

James Blackmon Jr. scored 16 points, OG Anunoby added 11 points and seven steals and the Hoosiers (12-6, 2-3 Big Ten) used a 23-point scoring advantage off turnovers to blow past Rutgers (11-8, 0-6).

Since the defending Big Ten champions climbed as high as No. 3 in the Top 25, fans have been mystified by Indiana’s sudden struggles.

The Hoosiers dropped four of their previous five games primarily because of turnovers and a defense that wasn’t playing well enough.

This time, they flipped the script.

Indiana had only one turnover in the first 16 minutes and finished with just 11.

Rutgers, meanwhile, committed 21 turnovers and was outscored, 33-10, in transition. Indiana finished with 14 steals, easily a season best.

Loyola 77, Missouri St. 71: At Chicago, Aundre Jackson scored 22 points, Milton Doyle had 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Loyola (13-6, 3-3 Missouri Valley) beat Missouri State (12-7, 3-3).

Loyola hit 8 of 10 free-throw attempts in the final 1:04 to hold on.

Donte Ingram sank four 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Loyola, which was 5 of 13 from distance. Doyle entered averaging 29 points, nine rebounds and 4.5 assist in his past two games and he has scored 10-plus in 20 straight games.

Loyola erased an 11-point halftime deficit to improve to 9-1 this season at Gentile Arena.

Alize Johnson had 20 points and 10 rebounds – his 10th double-double this season – for Missouri State. Dequon Miller added 16 points and Chris Kendrix 15.

ARLINGTON, Texas – This time it was a catch, and another win for the Green Bay Packers.

Call it a “Half Mary” from Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers threw a 36-yard pass to a toe-dragging Jared Cook on the sideline, and Mason Crosby kicked a 51yard field goal as time expired, sending the Packers to the NFC Championship game with their eighth straight win while thwarting a huge Dallas rally in a 34-31 victory in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday.

The throw on the run from Rodgers to Cook on third-and-20 with 12 seconds left – confirmed on review – wasn’t nearly as debatable as Dez Bryant’s famous catch that wasn’t in the Cowboys’ divisional round loss to Green Bay (12-6) two years ago.

Cook, who led Green Bay with 104 yards receiving, kept both feet

inbounds with a knee just above the ground out of bounds.

And it came after the Cowboys tied the game twice in the final 5 minutes behind rookie sensations Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott in their playoff debut.

It was the third field goal of more than 50 yards in the final 1:33 – two from Crosby and one from Dallas’ Dan Bailey. And Crosby had to make the winner twice after Dallas coach Jason Garrett called timeout before the first attempt.

Rodgers, who sparked last week’s wild-card win over the New York Giants with another Hail Mary before halftime, is headed to an MVP showdown with Atlanta’s Matt Ryan next Sunday. It will be his third NFC title game – all on the road.

“Unbelievable effort. I mean, what a game, what a game,” said Rodgers, who threw for 356 yards with two touchdowns. “We’re going to celebrate this and move on to Atlanta. We’re

just going to enjoy this right now.”

Green Bay’s win was the first by a road team after 12 straight home victories in the playoffs dating to last season. The Packers were the previous road team to win – over Washington in last season’s wild-card round.

The Cowboys (13-4) almost became the third team in the Super Bowl era to win in the playoffs after trailing by 15 points in the fourth quarter. The first was Dallas in 1972, when “Captain Comeback”, Roger Staubach, rallied the Cowboys for a 30-28 win over San Francisco.

Instead, top-seeded Dallas ended up with its fifth straight loss in the divisional round and a 21-year drought in trips to the NFC championship game.

Prescott, whose 11-game winning streak during the regular season sent Tony Romo to the bench when he was ready to return from a back injury, rallied the Cowboys in a way that probably made Dallas’ 10-year starter proud.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Who needs to reach the end zone when you have Le’Veon Bell chewing up yards and the clock, and Chris Boswell setting an NFL playoff record with six field goals?

Throw in a stingy Pittsburgh defense for most of Sunday night, and a multitude of mistakes by Kansas City, and the Steelers’ 18-16 victory sent them into the AFC Championship Game.

The Steelers (13-5) needed to hold off a last-ditch threat by the Chiefs (12-5) before advancing to face New England next Sunday night for a spot in the Super Bowl. The Patriots won this season at Pittsburgh, 27-16, but Ben Roethlisberger was injured and didn’t play.

“I think it’s going to be a showdown,” Bell said. “Two great quarterbacks going head to head. Two of the best teams in the AFC. It’s time to settle it next week.”

Since 2001, the Patriots and Steelers have combined to win nine AFC titles.

Spencer Ware’s 1-yard touchdown run took Kansas City within 18-16. The Chiefs at first converted the 2-pointer to tie it, but tackle Eric Fisher – the first overall selection in the 2013 draft – was penalized for holding. The next try failed.

With 2:43 remaining, Justin Gilbert misplayed the kick return and was tackled at the Pittsburgh 5. Roethlisberger hit Antonio Brown for 7 yards on third down and Pittsburgh then ran out the clock, securing a ninth straight victory for the Steelers. The Chiefs have not won a home playoff game since 1994, losing five in a row.

The scoring started furiously in the opening minutes, then the game became a kicking exhibition by Boswell, who also had six field goals in the regular season against Cincinnati. And Bell put on a virtuoso running performance, patiently finding holes and then exploding through them. He added a team-record 170 yards rushing to the 167 he had in a win over Miami last week.

“The coaches put a lot of trust in me to get the job done,” Bell said of his 30 carries. “Just run hard. Just picked my spots where I could and run hard.”

No, it’s the cost of the soon-to-be 35-year-old being a huge influence on a Bulls locker room that sorely needed a championship presence versus resting Wade’s knees and possibly costing themselves games in the standings.

That was on full display yet again Sunday, as Wade didn’t make the trip to Memphis after playing 32 minutes in the home win over New Orleans on Saturday afternoon. Not that the Bulls needed him, beating the Grizzlies, 108104, and again getting back to the .500 mark at 21-21.

According to coach Fred Hoiberg, however, the juice is worth the squeeze with Wade.

“Unfortunately, you don’t have that crystal ball right in front of you to see how things are going to play out, obviously, with Dwyane and with the backto-backs,’’ Hoiberg said. “The biggest thing with getting Dwyane in here was getting a guy with the type of experience, getting a guy with great leadership, really teaching our young guys what it’s like to be a pro at this level, and he’s been great in that area.

The game against the Grizzlies was the fifth game Wade missed so far this season. Four of the five were because of back-to-backs, while he missed the

Jan. 2 game against Charlotte with swelling in his left knee. The Bulls have lost only two of the games without Wade.

They usually have Jimmy Butler to thank for that, and while Butler was big down the stretch, it was Doug McDermott who stepped up, scoring a career-high 31 points. “[This win] says a lot about us,’’ McDermott said of his performance.

“When D-Wade doesn’t travel, we all know that everyone has to play a lit-

tle better and bring a little more to the table. We all did that, and Jimmy took over in the fourth quarter like we’re all used to, and just a big road win.’’

What’s now facing the Bulls, however, is with the standings in the Eastern Conference so fragile, what will Wade’s scheduled off-days look like as the second half of the season has started?

Wade has been limited in practices since early December, but Hoiberg is hoping that last season’s model used

by Wade in Miami means the Bulls will have his services for when it matters – down the stretch and hopefully into the playoffs.

“Again, what he offers to this locker room has been invaluable to the group,’’ Hoiberg said.

It might be a bit of a wake-up call to see how good we really are.”

D-C girls bowlers 2nd at Jacobs Invitational; Huntley takes 6th

Dundee-Crown’s girls bowling team finished second Saturday in the 20-team Jacobs Invitational at Liberty Lanes in Carpentersville with 5,308 pins. Freeport (5,482) took first place.

D-C was led by Taylor Gonio’s third-place finish with 1,234 pins for six games. She bowled a 289 in her first game. D-C also was helped by Mary Ehrmann (12th, 1,130 series), Grace McLean (13th, 1,129) and Clarissa Musselwhite (44th, 948).

Other local teams included Huntley (sixth, 4,823 pins), Marengo (seventh, 4,786), Johnsburg (eighth, 4,760), McHenry (10th, 4729) and Jacobs (12th, 4,543).

Thomas sets PGA Tour 72-hole scoring record, wins Sony Open

HONOLULU – Challenged only by the record book, Justin Thomas won the Sony Open on Sunday with the lowest 72-hole score in PGA Tour history.

Thomas capped a week at Waialae that began with a 59 and ended with his second straight victory. He closed with a 5-under-par 65 to set the record at 253. Tommy Armour III shot 254 at the 2003 Texas Open.

Thomas, 23, won by seven shots over Justin Rose.

Vonn 13th in downhill in return

ALTENMARKT-ZAUCHENSEE, Austria – Racing for the first time in 322 days, Lindsey Vonn had to settle for 13th place Sunday in an unusual women’s World Cup downhill with an unexpected winner, Christine Scheyer of Austria.

Vonn has been out with a knee injury and a broken arm since February last year.
