Illinois’ civil forfeiture law needs to change SPRINGFIELD – Henry County, a rural piece of western Illinois sliced by two interstates and the home of the “Hog Capital of the World,” is hardly the place you would expect important constitutional issues to be argued, but it is.

Larry Vandersnick, a Republican who is a former judge and prosecutor, developed misgivings about a common government tactic, civil forfeiture, which allows government to seize property from individuals even when they have never been convicted of a crime.

From his office in Cambridge, a picturesque town of 2,100, he’s become a soldier in a battle that is being fought in Washington, Springfield and county seats across the nation.

“I guess I’ve seen the light on part of the war on drugs,” he said. “Laws like these were passed in the early 1990s all across the country as part of it, but civil forfeiture has become a lot more common in the last 10 years. And it is hurting innocent people.”

Civil forfeiture basically is a money grab by government. And instead of just nabbing yachts from drug lords, it has caught plenty of ordinary people in its net as well.

Last year, Vandersnick read in the The Dispatch and Rock Island Argus about Judy Wiese, a 70-year-old housekeeper who lost her car.

She lent her 2009 Jeep Compass to a grandson so he could drive to work. The car was seized by police because the grandson’s driver’s license was revoked.

Wiese told the newspaper that her grandson had told her otherwise. Judy was just a grandma helping out a grandson. She hadn’t broken any laws. Vandersnick donated his legal services and got the car back for her, but most folks aren’t so fortunate.

“This is about money. Government looks at this as a way to bring in lots of money,” Vander-

And we are talking big money. Really big.

Since 2005, Illinois has pocketed more than $319 million from private citizens throughout the state. Federal law enforcement took in more than $404 million in Illinois over the same time period, Hilary Gowins of the Illinois Policy Institute told me.

The institute, along with the American Civil Liberties Union, is leading the charge to reform civil asset forfeiture laws in Illinois.

In a cash-strapped state such as Illinois, it will be an uphill slog. But justice is priceless.

And other states have seen the light.

New Mexico, Nebraska and North Carolina allow asset forfeiture only when a person has been convicted of a crime. And California recently passed a law banning forfeiture in most cases unless a conviction has been made.

Illinois should do the same.

No one should have what they own taken from them unless they have been found guilty.

And we should expect our police to defend the private property of Illinois residents – not take it away.

That might be common sense, but it’s not the law.

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Illinois residents concerned about the future of the state’s environment can rest assured Sen. Pam Althoff and Rep. Steve Andersson, among others, are doing something about it.

“State Legislature is helping create clean jobs and promote renewable energy,” Althoff said.

To inform McHenry County residents what’s going on in the state in terms of environmental legislation, Althoff and Andersson gave a presentation to about 100 environmentally minded people at the latest Green Drinks meeting Wednesday.

Led by the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, the event took place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Duke’s Alehouse & Kitchen, 110 N. Main St., Crystal Lake.

“The importance of this evening is the opportunity to appear before a group of well-educated, well-informed people on legislative issues that deal with the environment,” Althoff said.

Throughout the event, Althoff and Andersson talked about how a recently adopted green energy bill might help create new jobs in renewable energy development, cap energy rates and keep Exelon’s nuclear plants downstate in operation.

The environmentally friendly bill was passed Dec. 1 by the Illinois General Assembly. It will take effect June 1.

During the presentation, Andersson, who is the Illinois 65th House District state representative, said that possibly the most controversial part of the bill is what some might

Resident seeking explanation after supposed water valve replacement Aqua Illinois will not confirm yard damages are result of its work

hprokop@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – When Tom Mills looked out the window of his Crystal Lake-area home Dec. 31, he noticed tire tracks in the snow on his driveway and through his lawn.

After taking a closer look, Mills, of 7410 Hemlock St., discovered a hole had been dug in his backyard behind his garage, and the cap to his water valve had been replaced.

Mills said he had been in the process of having his water utility company, Aqua Illinois, come to replace his water meter, but had not been notified by the company, or anyone else, that someone would be coming to do work in his yard.

In addition to the tracks through his yard, there also is a dent to the gutter hanging over the garage, a gash in his

driveway, dirt left torn up behind his garage and damage to a fence post in his yard, Mills said.

Mills believes Aqua Illinois is responsible for the damage, but Aqua officials were not able to provide information confirming whether they did work at Mills’ home.

“This wouldn’t have been a big deal if they would’ve just communicated saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to be here,’ and I had somebody to talk to to say, ‘Hey, you scratched up the driveway and dinged up some stuff in the back, when are you coming to fix it?’ ” Mills said.

However, after reaching out to Aqua Illinois’ customer service line multiple times, Mills said he hasn’t been able to get any straight answers.

According to Algonquin Township records, Aqua Illinois is the water utility company that serves Mills’ home.

In 2016, Aqua Illinois finished work upgrading the water treatment facility in the McHenry Shores subdivision.

Aqua Illinois bought the McHenry Shores water system in 2014 after seeing that the facility was in need of repairs.

The sale resulted in increased water bills for some local residents and businesses.

A police report filed Dec. 31 with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, which the Northwest Herald received through a Freedom of Information Act request, shows Mills reported he believed the damage to his property occurred sometime Dec. 30.

According to the report, Mills said he believed the people who came to his home were from the water utility company because the front of his yard was marked with spray paint and flags earlier in the week.

The report also notes that “deep treads” were observed in Mills’ grass, and behind the garage there was a “significant area that was dug up.”

The report stated that Mills would follow up with police after he had contacted the water company.

As of Friday afternoon, Mills still hadn’t heard any explanation as to what happened in his yard.

“I’d just like, first of all, for [Aqua] to admit that they were here, and then for them to correct the situation they created,” Mills said. “And letting me know what they did and what they’re going to do next would be nice – or if this is it, or if they’re just going to leave it like this.”

nlinhart@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – McHenry County College is announcing its first graduating class from the Paralegal Studies program, which began in spring 2015.

Four students completed the twoyear Associate of Applied Science degree program, while an additional two students earned certificates. Those who earned their degrees were Laura Dendor of McHenry, Beatris Beard of Cortland, Caroline McRea Keller of Crystal Lake and Christopher Flint of Crystal Lake. The certificate earners were Karen Bucchianeri of Woodstock and Monserrat Yeverino of Crystal Lake.

McRea Keller plans to transfer to Regency University in London to pursue an international business degree.

“We were the pioneers of the paralegal program at MCC,” McRea Keller said. “The college created the classes geared toward the demand in the area. We like to think we ironed out the bumps in the road, making it even better for the next group of graduates.”

With the recent group of paralegal graduates, the community college now is qualified to start the process to be recognized by the American Bar Association.

“This is a milestone for our graduates and represents the final milestone for the college to be able to seek American Bar Association approval, which will be retroactive to all stu-

“Not everybody would agree that nuclear energy is green, but some people do because it’s a zero carbon emission energy source,” Andersson said.

If those plants closed, Andersson said, more than 4,000 jobs would be eliminated.

“I personally think it is green, so I agree with this bill helping those struggling plants,” Andersson said.

Althoff, who represents the 32nd Senate District of Illinois that covers the majority of McHenry County, said she has been a huge advocate of this adopted bill.

“We knew the electricity rates would go up if we didn’t keep the nuclear plants,” Althoff said.

Passed by the House on a 63-38 vote and by the Senate on a 32-18 vote, the bill also updates clean energy portfolio standards to potentially create more jobs in the state. Andersson said those jobs would include manufacturing and ongoing maintenance jobs.

“This will hopefully allow us to find jobs for people who right now are struggling to find jobs and enhance our environment at the same time,” Andersson said.

Another topic discussed during the meeting was proper recycling and the elimination of plastic bags at grocery stores, which the Environmental Defenders frequently has promoted throughout the county.

“What we need to do is educate our kids in McHenry County,” Althoff said.

“There’s a huge amount of recycling in the county because we had programs with the schools to teach them about recycling. And we use the same incentive for people to bring in cloth bags, so by the time they become adults, it’s second nature to them.”

As for the future, Andersson said

“We’re not there yet, but could be there in 10 to 15 years,” Andersson said.

Toward the end of the presentation, Althoff and Andersson encouraged attendees to get more people involved and continue to let the Legislature know what environmental issues are going on.

“You guys have been instrumental in educating me about what’s important to this area,” Althoff said. “People in Illinois come to us often about environmental issues since they know we are concerned.”

From her birth in Chicago, IL on December 23, 1932 to her passing on Thursday, Dorothy nourished people around her with love, faith, and songs. After her graduation in 1951 from Austin H. S., Dorothy married John “Jack” Gomoll on February 13, 1954. Their life together started in Chicago, followed by a move to Streamwood, IL, where Dorothy volunteered at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elgin. She loved caring for people, family, and friends. The family then moved to Elgin, and finally landing on the Fox River where she last resided.

It’s there where our best memories have been made with our family and friends alike.

Left to honor Dorothy and remember her love are Dorothy’s five children, John M. (Lisa) Gomoll, Kenneth J. (Peggy) Gomoll, Mark S. (Ramona) Gomoll, Wendy A. (Bill) Hoover, and Jeffery A. Born: July 6, 1925; in Chicago, IL Died: January 6, 2017; in Crystal Lake, IL Ethel J. Pearson, 91, of Crystal Lake, died peacefully on Friday, January 6, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born July 6, 1925, in Chicago, the daughter of Herman and Beatrice (Echterling) Schutz.

Ethel graduated from Loretto High School and attended Bryant & Stratton Business School and Loyola University. She worked as a bookkeeper beginning in Chicago for Cahill Bros. and retiring after 22 years at Klitz Cutting Tools in Crystal Lake, the town where she lived for over 60 years.

On August 7, 1954, in Chicago, she married Edwin R. Pearson. After the death of her first husband, she married again on July 26, 1997, in Crystal Lake, to N. Kenneth Pearson.

In addition to raising her family, Ethel loved sewing, needlework, quilting and travel. She was well-known for her beautiful handmade sewing projects and even made her own wedding gown into a communion dress for her granddaughters to wear.

Surviving are two daughters, Christine (James) Arnold of Crystal Lake, Beverly (Doug) Shinneman of St. Joseph, MO; three sons, Kurt (Jodi McPhillips) Pearson of McHenry, Guy (Mary) Pearson of Oregon, WI, and Donald Pearson of Crystal Lake; a stepdaughter / niece Lorine (Ron) Walters of Presque Isle, WI; seven grandchildren, Bethany Arnold, Katelyn Arnold, Drew Shinneman, Shawn Shinneman, Brooke Shinneman, Megan Pearson, and Matthew Pearson; four step-grandchildren, and eleven step-greatgrandchildren; and a special niece Ann (Tony) May of Crystal Lake.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, her sister, Sister Beatrice Marie; and a stepdaughter/niece, Karla Pearson.

Ethel’s family would like to give special thanks to Journey Care Hospice and all of her caregivers, especially Anne Brown.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00pm on Tuesday, January 10th at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. Ron was born and raised in Ashton, IL, a rural community west of Rockford. He remained closely connected to the town and community throughout his entire life. After graduating from Monmouth College in 1957, he came to Crystal Lake where he began his career as a teacher in School District 47.

He later completed his Master’s degree at Northern Illinois University and then served as a Speech/Language Pathologist for the remainder of his educational career in District 47. Ron was one of the early presidents of the teachers’ association, CLETA. Following retirement, he was active in the McHenry County Retired Teachers’ Association.

Ron was a faithful church member throughout his lifetime. He attended The First United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, Christ Church in Algonquin and The Congregational Church in Algonquin. He was active in church choirs, Sunday School and Men’s Fellowship Groups.

Ron was a long time resident of Crystal Lake until, due to chronic health issues, he moved to Florence Nursing Home in Marengo.

He lived there for almost 8 years participating in numerous activities, befriending many residents and enjoying special visitors. Ron and his wife Bobbie celebrated their 50th anniversary last June at Florence with friends and family members.

Ron is survived by his wife, Roberta “Bobbie” Reed of Crystal Lake, IL; daughter, Emily Reed of Fox Lake, IL; sister, Barbara (Charles) Eaton of San Rafael, CA and brother, Jon (Nancy) Reed of Salem, OR, nieces and nephew: Julie, Susan, Scott, Amy and Holly, and cousins: Dolores Reynolds, Janelle Haack and Suzanne Huang.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Otto Machacek, 75, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, passed away on December 27, 2016 in Elgin, IL, of complications from a stroke.

He was born on June 9, 1941 in Chicago, IL, the son of Marcella (Strmiska) Machacek & Otto Machacek. He married Margaret (Baumhardt) Machacek in Chicago on June 8, 1968. They met at Wright Junior College, and Otto immediately knew she was the one for him. Dancing together was one of their favorite activities. They celebrated 48 wonderful years of marriage.

Otto enlisted in the United States Army in February 1963 to March 1969. He was one of the first computer programmers to utilize the concept of mobile computers in Germany.

Otto continued his profession after the military as a computer analyst. Otto obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in general studies from Columbia College May 11, 2002.

He was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and participated as a volunteer with the Ministry of Care at Advocate Good Shephard Hospital. He was a retired member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, January 1, 1996 - October 23, 2002, and served as a Flotilla Commander.

Otto enjoyed accompanying his wife to the Bachelor ‘N Bachelorette-McHenry Square Dancing Club, where he participated as treasurer. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed trips with his son and friends. He was an Assistant Scout Master in his son’s Boy Scout Troops 161 & 190. Otto enjoyed travel and made friends with Pat and Bob Barker in England. Special thanks to Lee Hayes and Phil Pickard, for the many outings and hours of lively conversation. He treasured the time spent with you.

Otto is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret E. Machacek. His daughter Kimberly (Witty) Dery and her husband John Dery. Granddaughters, Elizabeth (Dery) Kane and Naomi (Dery) Creamer. Daughter, Patricia E. Machacek. Son, Edward O. Machacek, his wife, Courtney M. Machacek, and granddaughter, Elayna C. Machacek. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Marcella (Strmiska) Machacek; his father, Otto Machacek; his sister, Roberta (Machacek) Moser; his brother-in-law, John W. Baumhardt; and his sister-in-law, Beverly (Burton) Baumhardt.

Coffee shops have long had a place in county LOCAL HISTORY Kurt Begalka I was intrigued to read that Starbucks Coffee Corp. is poised to overtake McDonald’s Corp. as the world’s most valuable restaurant company.

Who knew?

Bloomberg reported that Mark Kalinowski, restaurant industry analyst with Japan’s Nomura Group, named Starbucks his top restaurant stock this year – and for good reason.

Amid the store closures rampant in retail right now, the Seattle company expects to nearly double its number of stores to 37,000 during the next five years – 5,000 of which will be in the burgeoning Chinese market that already operates 2,500 cafes.

The company currently averages a new store each day in China, and that will go a long way toward it reaching the 50,000-store level Kalinowski foresees – eclipsing Subway.

I suppose President-elect Donald Trump can always threaten to rectify the trade imbalance by decaffeinating Beijing.

In her 2008 book “Homestead Memories,” author Linda Runyon explained the buzz this way: “There aren’t any adequate words to express the comfort, joy, energy and secure feelings a cup of coffee gave me.

Still does. Many memories flood back, and hundreds of experiences make special cups of coffee remembered even now.”

At present, McHenry County residents can choose from the likes of Caribou Coffee, Chicago Coffee Roastery, Java Delites, Conscious Cup and a slew of doughnut shops and diners – not to mention Starbucks in Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Cary, Volo, Huntley and Woodstock – to quench their coffee addiction. But back in the day, general stores and corner diners served as gathering spots for locals.

A reporter for the New Haven Register described the closing of a 60-yearold coffee shop there last month this way: “… For the morning crowd, everyone has their own seat, either along the countertops on swivel stools or in the booths, and the banter and laughter is constant. The camaraderie and friendships created while drinking coffee and enjoying breakfast are strong and long lasting. … Most mornings you will find the same people

in the same seats enjoying the same meal every day. The waitress places most orders without even asking the customer.”

Everyone, it seems, had their favorite hangout – from Bill’s Grill in Crystal Lake to Harvard’s Kozy Nook, from Ueber’s Café in Marengo to McHenry’s Busy Bee. They even had “coffee shops” proper, such as the Bide-A-Wee in McHenry and the aptly named Helen and Ray’s Coffee shop in Marengo.

Mrs. N.E. Taylor, a Chicago transplant and former hotel manager, opened Bide-A-Wee on Route 12 in 1929. Helen and Ray McAndrews operated the Marengo coffee shop from 1939 to 1946 – surviving a forced furlough during 1945 because of World War II rationing.

“Ray McAndrews, of the Coffee Shop, said that he had no choice but to close for two weeks, as he had no points to operate and could only have served meals by cheating points,” the Marengo Republican-News reported.

Coffee was considered a staple at diners and lunch counters, most of

which have disappeared from downtowns across the country. One exception is the Little Chef, a family-owned restaurant that has operated at 1332 N. Riverside Drive in McHenry for the past 50 years.

Little Chef owner Terry Fair said her mom, Shirley Klapperich, bought the restaurant in 1968 when Terry was 11. Back then, they opened at 4:30 a.m. rather than 5:30 in the morning. But one thing that hasn’t changed are the people waiting outside – in the rain, snow, even bone-chilling cold – for the place to open.

“I remember we had this huge snowstorm, I think it was in 1979, and my dad picked me up on a snowmobile. I’m thinking, ‘Woo-hoo, I’m off from school.’ … Not so much,” Fair said with a laugh. “That was one of our busiest days. We had firemen, plowmen, police; everyone who had to go out during a snowstorm. We were the only place open.”

Fair said she still has a few customers remaining from the opening days, but the Chef also caters to a new generation, longing for a simpler way of life in a high-tech world.

“Now it’s completely cool. It’s so retro,” Fair said. “There still is the silver countertop. It looks just like it did back in the day. It’s so great. Who knew?”

The resilience of poppy fields – in the midst of the horrendous trench warfare between 1914 and 1918 – prompted Canadian doctor Lt. Col. John McCrae to pen the famous poem “In Flanders Fields.”

“In Flanders’ fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row on row, / That mark our place: and in the sky / The larks, still bravely singing, fly / Scarce heard amid the guns below.

“We are the dead. / Short days ago / We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, / Loved and were loved, and now we lie / In Flanders’ fields.

“Take up our quarrel with the foe; / To you from failing hands we throw / The torch; be yours to hold it high, / If ye break faith with us who die / We shall not sleep, though poppies grow / In Flanders’ fields.”

After World War I, the poppy was adopted as a symbol of remembrance.

Senate to vote on plan to end budget impasse

SPRINGFIELD – A plan to end a twoyear Illinois budget standoff negotiated in the Senate – which likely includes an income tax increase as well as items on Gov. Bruce Rauner’s agenda – could get a vote in Springfield as early as Monday, a leading Republican senator said Sunday.

The deal was still shaping up over the weekend after weeks of talks between Democratic Senate President John Cullerton and GOP Leader Christine Radogno, said Sen. Pamela Althoff, a Republican from McHenry.

While it would mark a significant step toward smashing the logjam on a state spending plan between Republican Rauner and Democratic legislative leaders, there are only two work days remaining for the current General Assembly – no time to seek a House vote.

But it could position the Senate as distinct in what has largely been a test of wills between the billionaire governor and Chicago Democrat Michael Madigan, house speaker for three decades. Rauner often invokes Madigan’s

Durbin hesitant on some Trump Cabinet nominees

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin is expressing concern about several of President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks, noting that overall it is a “very rich” group.

Durbin told the State Journal-Register in Springfield that he likely will support Elaine Chao, Trump’s nominee to be secretary of transportation, and has heard good things about retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, Trump’s pick for secretary of defense.

However, he is skeptical about former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Energy. Durbin said he doesn’t understand how Perry could administer a department he has said he wants to close.

Durbin said he is unsure about Senate colleague Jeff Sessions of Alabama, who is Trump’s choice for attorney general.

He said they agree on the need for criminal justice reform. But Durbin said

Two mobile stroke units poised to start operating

WINFIELD – Two suburban Chicago hospitals plan to launch mobile units this year that are designed to quickly get lifesaving treatment to stroke victims.

The Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Rush University Medical Center mobile stroke units will be the first of their kind in the Chicago area.

The ambulances will carry CT scanners, video-conferencing equipment and clot-dissolving medication that can restore blood flow.

“I think this will be the standard of care as time goes by. It’s a phenomenal technology to have,” Dr. Harish Shownkeen, medical director for stroke and neurovascular medicine at Central DuPage, told the Daily Herald. “The treatment hasn’t changed; it’s the initiating of the treatment that has made the quantum leap.”

Doctors said the mobile units are valuable because they allow treatment to begin sooner, making a huge difference in patients’ recoveries.

“Time really is of the essence,” said Dr. James Conners, section head of cerebro-

To this point, Democrats have argued those are “nonbudget items” that should be negotiated separately.

And it might include a plan to borrow billions of dollars to pay down overdue bills – which topped $11 billion on Friday – to vendors and service providers.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly did not comment Sunday. On Friday, the governor told reporters in

Carbondale he knew few of the details but said, “I’m optimistic that Democrats and Republicans will continue to negotiate in good faith to come up with changes to our system so it’s not broken anymore.”

The refusal to budge on either side has forced Illinois to limp along for two years without an approved spending plan. Government has functioned largely on the strength of court-ordered spending for social services and lawmakers’ piecemeal appropriation action.

But 1 million or more people relying on mental health, substance abuse treatment or domestic violence prevention funded with state dollars had been cut off.

Rauner’s budget office predicts a $5.3 billion deficit June 30, the end of the fiscal year, in addition to the mountain of past-due bills.

Legislative leaders this week scheduled only two days – Monday and Tuesday – to tie up loose ends before a new General Assembly is sworn in Wednesday. It will be the 100th General Assembly, which will serve during the Prairie State’s bicentennial in 2018.

Man in custody after O’Hare airport checkpoint breach

CHICAGO – Chicago police said a man is in custody after breaching a security checkpoint at O’Hare International Airport.

Authorities said the man breached a checkpoint early Sunday in the airport’s Terminal 3, and tried to board an aircraft.

When police officers prevented him from doing so, the man attacked the officers, striking them several times.

Authorities said after being taken into custody the man was taken to Resurrection Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.

Child porn producer gets 80-year sentence

EDWARDSVILLE – An 80-year prison sentence has been handed a southern Illinois man who pleaded guilty to child pornography and predatory criminal sexual assault.

David J. Von Bergen of Godfrey was arrested in September 2014 when police served a search warrant on his home.

Police said Von Bergen was downloading child pornography on his computer at the time of his arrest.

Authorities said a search of the computer turned up two videos made by the 36-yearold Von Bergen depicting sexual acts between him and two sisters, ages 7 and 8.

Madison County Circuit Judge Neil Schroeder on Friday sentenced Von Bergen to 25 years on each of the two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault. Von Bergen received 15 years for each of the child pornography charges.

Von Bergen must serve 57 years before he is eligible for parole.

Agent who questioned Hussein leads Fla. case

FORTLAUDERDALE,Fla.– The FBI agent who interrogated Saddam Hussein alone for months after the former Iraqi leader’s capture is now leading the investigation into the Florida airport shooting rampage blamed on an Iraq war veteran.

George Piro, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami field office, was Saddam’s sole interrogator beginning in January 2004. In previous interviews, Piro has said Saddam did not know his true identity – the Iraqi leader called him “Mr. George” – and that he posed as a high-level envoy who answered directly to then-President George W. Bush.

Now the 49-year-old Piro, a native of Beirut, Lebanon, fluent in Arabic and Assyrian, is in charge of the FBI investigation into the shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport that left five people dead and six wounded. Federal prosecutors have charged Esteban Santiago, 26, with airport violence and firearms offenses that could bring the death penalty if he is convicted.

In announcing the charges filed Saturday, Piro said his thoughts are with the victims and their families.

“I want to ensure these families that law enforcement is working tirelessly in order to ensure justice is served,” he said.

Piro, an FBI agent since 1999, moved with his family from Lebanon to California’s San Joaquin Valley as a teenager. After high school he enlisted in the Air Force, then became a police officer for a decade in Ceres, California, followed by a job as an investigator in the local prosecutor’s office.

Once he joined the FBI in Phoenix, Piro was one of only a handful of Arabic-speaking agents – a group that suddenly

In 2003, Piro was promoted to the FBI’s Counterterrorism Division at headquarters in Washington, leading to his work as Saddam’s interrogator.

In later interviews, including a 2008 appearance on CBS’s “60 Minutes” program, Piro said he met daily with Saddam in a windowless room and worked to gain his trust by becoming his only provider of necessities and such things as paper for Saddam to write poetry.

Eventually, Piro said Saddam confirmed that Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction before the U.S. invasion but might seek them in the future to deter Iran and other threats. Saddam also denied any links to al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden, Piro has said.

Saddam also liked to brag about how he escaped U.S. airstrikes and capture, Piro said.

“What he wanted to really illustrate is ... how he was able to outsmart us,” Piro told “60 Minutes.” “He got rid of his

normal vehicles. He got rid of the protective detail that he traveled with, really just to change his signature.”

Saddam was later tried and executed by hanging in December 2006.

Santiago, the airport shooting suspect, also served in Iraq in 2010 with the Puerto Rico National Guard as part of an engineering battalion, guard officials said. Santiago later served in the Army Reserves and Alaska National Guard.

After Iraq, Piro moved on to top FBI counterterrorism jobs in Washington, including a White House position involving high-value detainee interrogation that works with various intelligence agencies.

Since taking the top Miami FBI job, Piro has overseen work in more domestic areas such as health care fraud, identity theft and tax fraud, Ponzi schemes and mortgage fraud – all areas where South Florida is among the nation’s leaders. Bank robberies, violent street gangs, public corruption and smuggling of humans and drugs round out much of the work for the Miami office’s estimated 1,000 agents and employees.

Navy, Trump plan biggest fleet expansion since Cold War

The Associated Press BATH, Maine – With President-elect Donald Trump demanding more ships, the Navy is proposing the biggest shipbuilding boom since the end of the Cold War to meet threats from a resurgent Russia and saber-rattling China.

The Navy’s 355-ship proposal released last month is even larger than what the Republican Trump had promoted on the campaign trail, providing a potential boost to shipyards that have struggled because budget caps that have limited money funding for ships.

At Maine’s Bath Iron Works, workers worried about the future want to build more ships but wonder where the billions of dollars will come from.

“Whether Congress and the government can actually fund it, is a whole other ball game,” said Rich Nolan, president of the shipyard’s largest union.

Boosting shipbuilding to meet the Navy’s 355-ship goal could require an additional $5 billion to $5.5 billion in annual spending in the Navy’s 30-year projection, according to an estimate by naval analyst Ronald O’Rourke at the Congressional Research Service.

deployments, and for the ships, which would have more down time for maintenance, said Matthew Paxton, president of the Shipbuilders Council of America, which represents most of the major Navy shipbuilders.

“Russia and China are going to continue to build up their navies,” he said.

“The complexities aren’t going to get

any easier. The Navy, more than any of the services, is our forward presence.

We’re going to need this Navy.”

Many defense analysts agree that military capabilities have been degraded in recent years, especially when it comes to warships, aircraft and tanks.

The key is finding a way to increase Navy shipbuilding to achieve defense and economic gains “in a fiscally responsible way that does not pass the bill along to our children,” said independent Sen. Angus King of Maine, a member of the Armed Services Committee.

Even when Trump takes office, no one envisions a return to the heady days during the Cold War when workers were wiring, welding, grinding, pounding and plumbing ships at a furious pace to meet President Ronald Reagan’s audacious goal of a 600 ship Navy.

The Navy currently has 274 deployable battle force ships, far short of its old goal of 308 ships.

Lawrence J. Korb, a retired naval officer and former assistant defense secretary under Reagan, said the Navy’s request isn’t realistic unless the Trump administration is willing to take the budget “to levels we’ve never seen.”

“You never have enough money to buy a perfect defense. You have to make trade-offs,” said Korb, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress.

“La La Land” steamrolled, “Moonlight” swooped in at the last minute and Meryl Streep offered a stirring rebuke to president-elect Donald Trump at a schizophrenic Golden Globes that pivoted between heartfelt moments of protest and a desire to sing and dance.

Damien Chazelle’s bright-hued Los Angeles musical “La La Land” dominated the Beverly Hills, California, ceremony with seven awards – a Golden Globes record – including best motion picture, comedy or musical, further cementing its Oscar favorite status.

But perhaps its stiffest Academy Awards competition, Barry Jenkins’ tender coming of age drama “Moonlight” – which competed largely in separate dramatic categories – took the night’s final award, best movie drama.

It was the film’s only hardware despite six nominations.

Yet the night belonged to Meryl Streep, this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award honoree, who most articulated an argument for the inclusivity of the movies – an ongoing theme of the night – over the platform of the president-elect, who is to be sworn in Jan. 20.

In one of the evening’s more emotional acceptance speeches, Gosling dedicated his award to the late brother of his partner, Eva Mendes.

“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” said Gosling, referring to Juan Carlos Mendes.

The ceremony got off to a rocky start, with a broken teleprompter initially froze Fallon. “Cut to Justin Timberlake, please,” implored a desperately improvising Fallon. It was the second fiasco in eight days for Globes producer Dick Clark Productions, which presented the infamous Mariah Carey flub on New Year’s Eve. As if predicting the “La La Land” haul to come, the “Tonight Show” host started the show with a cold open ode to the film in a lavish sketch more typical of the Academy Awards than the Globes.

Fallon did a version of the film’s opening on-top-of-cars dance scene, with starry cameos from Timberlake, Tina Fey, Amy Adams and the white Ford Bronco of “The People v. O.J. Simpson.”

Cleaning up VA should be a priority The body of a military veteran was left in a Veterans Affairs health care facility shower room for more than nine hours before someone finally had it moved to a morgue, the Tampa, Florida, Bay Times reported last month.

Then, once their negligence came to light, some staff at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System hospice tried to cover it up, according to an in-house investigation.

Some staff at the hospice violated VA policies by “failing to provide appropriate post-mortem care” of the veteran’s body, the hospital Administrative Investigation Board concluded. A hospital spokesman called the episode “unacceptable,” but refused to tell the newspaper whether the guilty employees had been disciplined in any way.

Providing that information would have been a violation of confidentiality rules, the spokesman said.

That is absurd, of course. If confidentiality rules prohibit the government from disclosing whether employees have been disciplined – without providing any names – something is badly wrong within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

But we knew that.

What the spokesman did say was that members of the hospice staff have “recommitted” to VA core values.

Pardon us for doubting that. More likely, those involved breathed sighs of relief for being punished by mere slaps on the wrist.

If they recommitted to anything, it was to not getting caught the next time they do something wrong.

A bill that would allow VA officials to come down hard on the handful of personnel who make a mockery of efforts by others to help veterans is pending in Congress.

Why hasn’t it passed, yet? Because the bureaucracy wants it killed.

President-elect Donald Trump should make cleaning up the VA one of his top priorities – recommitting the nation to treating veterans decently.

Should be no rush to kill Obamacare

For seven years, Republicans have yearned to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. Now that they have the chance, they seem wholly unprepared to do it right.

Much work is still needed to figure out how to avoid destabilizing the health-insurance system. Yet, in their hurry, leaders in Congress seem to want to skip that part.

What’s the rush?

Republicans are allowing themselves just three weeks to develop a budget bill that would scuttle Obamacare – ending the tax penalties on people who don’t have insurance, and scrapping insurance premium subsidies for low-income Americans. Presumably, some or all of the funding to states that have expanded Medicaid coverage under Obamacare would also be cut. Congressional leaders intend to thus lay the groundwork for those changes but then avoid actually making them for two or three years – during which they promise

to think up a better system.

It’s an unrealistic strategy, because it would give the young and the healthy an incentive to drop their policies, and lead insurers to flee a marketplace undermined by a weakening risk pool and shrinking or disappearing subsidies.

Companies can hardly be expected to count on lawmakers’ assurances that they’ll create a better marketplace later.

Obamacare has been able to expand the number of Americans with health insurance by at least 20 million people and slow the rising cost of health care by addressing the system’s inescapable economics: The healthy and relatively affluent need to carry some of the expense of covering the sick and the poor.

In theory, Republicans could create a successful system of their own, with conservative characteristics. But it’s a complicated challenge that takes careful, sustained

attention. If Republicans start by sending the insurance market into a tailspin, they’ll need to spend precious time – and money – on dealing with the consequences.

Republican leaders keep saying that America demands a quick repeal. But what makes them think that? In a poll taken after the election, just 26 percent of respondents said they wanted the entire law repealed. Even Republican voters were split: Only 50 percent of those who supported Trump were in favor of repeal.

Republicans now have the opportunity to shore up America’s still unstable health-insurance system – either by amending the Affordable Care Act or creating an entirely new system. Obviously, fixing would be easier, and probably more effective, than rebuilding. What’s irresponsible would be to destroy what exists with no clear plan to replace it.

This is bizarre for a few reasons. To start, Assange’s description of the press environment in Russia has a curious omission. Why no mention of the journalists and opposition figures who have been killed or forced into exile? Assange gives the impression that the Russian government is just as vulnerable to mass disclosures of its secrets as the U.S. government has been. That’s absurd, even if it’s also true that some oppositional press is tolerated there.

Also, WikiLeaks once had a Russian-speaking associate. His name is Yisrael Shamir, and according to former WikiLeaks staffer James Ball, he worked closely with the organization when it began distributing the State Department cables. Shamir is a supporter of Vladimir Putin. This is all a pity. A decade ago, when Assange founded WikiLeaks, it was a very different organization. As Raffi Khatchadourian reported in a 2010 New Yorker profile, Assange told potential collaborators in 2006, “Our primary targets are those highly oppressive regimes in China, Russia and Central Eurasia, but we also expect to be of assistance to those in the West who wish to reveal illegal or immoral behavior in their own governments and corporations.”

For a while, WikiLeaks followed this creed. The first document published, but not verified, was an internal memo purporting to show how Somalia’s Islamic Courts Union intended to murder members of the transitional government there. It published the emails of University of East Anglia climate scientists discussing manipulation of climate change data. In its early years, WikiLeaks published information damaging to the U.S. as well. But no government or entity or political side appeared to be immune from the organization’s anonymous whistle-blowers.

Today, WikiLeaks’s actions discredit its original mission. Does anyone believe Assange when he darkly implies that he received the DNC emails from a whistleblower? Even if you aren’t persuaded that Russia was behind it, there is a preponderance of public evidence that the e-mail account of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta was hacked, such as the e-mail that asked him to give his password in a phishing scam. Assange himself is not even sticking to his old story: He told Hannity that a 14-year-old could have hacked Podesta’s emails. Good to know.

In short, the founder of a site meant to expose the falsehoods of governments and large institutions has been gaslighting us. Just look at the WikiLeaks statement on the e-mails right before the election. “To withhold the publication of such information until after the election would have been to favour one of the candidates above the public’s right to know,” it said.

That’s precious. WikiLeaks did favor a candidate in the election simply by publishing the emails. And the candidate it aided, Donald Trump, is so hostile to the public’s right know that he won’t even release his tax returns. In two weeks, he will be in charge of an intelligence community that asserts with high confidence the e-mails WikiLeaks made public were stolen

by Russian government hackers. Assange, of course, denies it, and Trump seems to believe him. Sad!

You almost have to feel sorry for Julian Assange.

Shut in at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London without access to sunlight, the founder of WikiLeaks is reduced to self-parody these days.

Here is a man dedicated to radical transparency, yet he refuses to go to Sweden despite an arrest warrant in connection with allegations of sexual assault.

His organization retweets the president-elect who once called for him to be put to death. He spreads the innuendo that Seth Rich, a Democratic National Committee staffer, was murdered this summer because he was the real source of the emails WikiLeaks published in the run-up to November’s election. And now he tells Fox News’s Sean Hannity that it’s the U.S. media that is deeply dishonest.

This is the proper context to evaluate Assange’s claim, repeated by Donald Trump and his supporters, that Russia was not the source for the e-mails of leading Democrats distributed by WikiLeaks.

We all know that the U.S. intelligence community is standing by its judgment that Russia hacked the Democrats’ emails and distributed them to influence the election. And while it’s worrisome that Trump would dismiss this judgment out of hand, this also misses the main point. Sometimes the spies get it wrong, like the “slam-dunk” conclusion that Saddam Hussein was concealing Iraqi weapons of mass destruction.

The real issue is Assange. The founder of WikiLeaks has a history of saying paranoid nonsense.

This is particularly true of Assange’s view of Hillary Clinton. His delusions have led him to justify the interference in our elections as an act of holding his nemesis accountable to the public.

Bill Keller, the former New York Times executive editor, captured Assange’s penchant for dark fantasy in a 2011 essay that described him casually telling a group of journalists from the Guardian that former Stasi agents were destroying East German archives of the secret police. A German reporter from Der Spiegel, John Goetz, was incredulous. “That’s utter nonsense.

Some former Stasi personnel were hired as security guards in the office, but the records were well protected,” Keller recounts him as saying.

In this sense, WikiLeaks’s promotion of the John Grishamesque yarn that Seth Rich was murdered on orders from Hillary Clinton’s network is in keeping with a pattern. Both Rich’s family and the Washington police have dismissed this as a conspiracy theory.

That, however, did not stop WikiLeaks from raising a $20,000 reward to find his “real” killers.

Add to this Assange’s approach to Russia. It’s well known that his short-lived talk show, which once aired a respectful interview with the leader of the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah, was distributed by Russian state television. WikiLeaks has also never published sensitive documents from Russian government sources comparable to the emails of Democrats last year.

When an Italian journalist asked him last month why WikiLeaks hasn’t published the Kremlin’s secrets, Assange’s answer was telling. “In Russia, there are many vibrant publications, online blogs, and Kremlin critics such as [Alexey] Navalny are part of that spectrum,” he said . “There are also newspapers like Novaya Gazeta, in which different parts of society in Moscow are permitted to critique each other and it is tolerated, generally, because it isn’t a big TV channel that might have a mass popular effect, its audience is educated people in Moscow. So my interpretation is that in Russia there are competitors to WikiLeaks, and no WikiLeaks staff speak Russian, so for a strong culture which has its own language, you have to be

Try to combat stress of infertility Dear Doctor: My husband and I are trying to have a baby, but we’re having problems conceiving. Could my stress be to blame?

Dear Reader: First, let’s consider a couple of statistics, specifically as they relate to women. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 6.1 percent of married women between the ages of 18 and 44 are infertile, while 12.3 percent of women between the ages of 18 and 44 have difficulty getting pregnant. Infertility is known to be linked to alcohol use and smoking, and possibly caffeine, so in assessing your own risk factors, I first would look at those potential influencers.

The best study of stress and pregnancy was among 401 married couples in Michigan and Texas attempting to get pregnant. The women in this study were followed for 12 months. They filled out questionnaires to assess their stress levels and took part in a measurement of their saliva’s amylase.

Salivary amylase is an enzyme that has been shown to be a reliable marker of psychosocial stress. Levels of it rise with increased activity of the sympathetic (“flight or fight”) nervous system.

This study found the group of women with the highest level of amylase was 29 percent less likely to become pregnant than those with the lowest level of amylase.

Further, the level of amylase correlated well to a woman’s stress level based on the scores from the questionnaires that were filled out.

So it seems reasonable that psychological stress can reduce the chance of getting pregnant.

Further, simply trying to become pregnant and being unable to do so can create stress, as many studies have shown. A Korean study found the levels of psychological distress were significantly higher in women who had difficulty conceiving compared with women who were able to conceive. This

Even the stress of fertility treatments can affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant.

One study found women who were undergoing fertility treatment and were part of a support or therapy group had a 54 percent conception rate, while those who were not in a support group had a 20 percent conception rate.

Note men are not immune to the negative aspects of stress. Men who have experienced more than two stressful life events have been found to have lower sperm concentration, motility and morphology.

It would be easy for me to tell you: “Stress less.” But no one knows your typical life stressors better than you. My advice is threefold. One, turn to your husband for support.

The two of you are in this together, after all, and he’s in the best position to understand what you’re going through. Second, develop some coping skills through relaxation techniques, meditation or simply going for a walk within nature. Hearing the sounds of the waves as you walk along the beach, listening to the sounds of birds or enjoying the view from a mountain can provide a calming perspective to your everyday life.

And three, if you find yourself still unable to become pregnant, consult a fertility specialist. Having some answers can point you in the right direction – and reduce your stress.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY wife and I and our 13-year-old Jeanne son live in a nice Phillips home we have been remodeling for the last eight years. The problem is, my wife has a hard time getting rid of anything, and she constantly brings home “new projects” that take up space but never get done. At one point, we hired a professional organizer because we had reached the point of having “goat trails” as the only means of navigating our way around the house. We also have a barn that is chockablock full.

I have heard the root cause may be due to an anomaly on a chromosome. How should I approach my wife about getting some genetic testing done? Her mom also is a professional pack rat. The clutter is taking its toll on our relationship – we are in marriage counseling – and on our family. We have so much stuff I can’t breathe. – Suffocating In Montana Dear Suffocating: It is interesting your wife’s mother also has this problem. Hoarding is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, which can run in families, and has been known to be associated with depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. It couldn’t hurt if your wife had genetic testing done, but the suggestion might be better coming from the marriage counselor rather than from you, because if she hears it from you, she might become defensive or resistant.

Dear Abby: I have worked at the same small company for 25 years. All but one of the employees have been with this company for more than 20 years. “Grace” has been here only three years. She is pleasant, funny, trustworthy and easy to be around. However, she never brings her own lunch.

If something is in the refrigerator, she feels it is fair game to eat it. If I bring something she wants, she will come up to me, take the bag and ask, “What’s for lunch this week?”

I keep snacks in my desk, and she knows which drawer I keep them in. When I reach for something to hold me over, sometimes the drawer will be empty and the bag will be on her desk or in her trash. It infuriates me.

I have made subtle comments on how this upsets me. I have progressed to no longer bringing my lunch. I know she can afford her own lunch. She earns more than I do and doesn’t have children or a mortgage. How do I tell this woman to keep her hands off my lunch and snacks? – Hungry In Houston Dear Hungry: How “trustworthy” can Grace be if she steals your food? When her outrageous behavior and petty thievery started, you shouldn’t have hinted – you should have told the woman to keep her hands off your lunch and out of your desk drawers. If she didn’t respect your wishes, you should have reported it to your supervisor or your boss. It’s still not too late to do that, and I suggest if there isn’t a policy in your company handbook pertaining to this kind of pilfering that one be included.

If the clubs are 4-2, and South has to ruff the fourth round, then he should lead the spade queen from hand. Maybe West will not cover. But if he does, declarer returns to hand with a trump and runs the spade nine.

Here, if West takes the third club, he is endplayed. So let’s assume West defends well, throwing away his queen on the second round. When East shifts to a low spade at trick eight, South plays low from hand.

Here, that forces out West’s king and declarer is home.

How did Jelic defend? South started clubs with his king, then on the second round, Jelic correctly played his queen. But declarer decided that this was from an initial queen-doubleton (and West had erred in not throwing his queen under the king), so South played low from the board.

Jelic exited with his third club to defeat the slam.

The Volkenings have a couple of hoops, one outside and one in the shed. Melinda Volkening played basketball at Marengo herself, and Mike – the third of her four boys to go through the Indians basketball program – said she always is willing to help.

“She rebounds for me all the time,” Volkening said. “It’s really nice, actually. At home, if I’m not able to get in the gym, she’ll come out, take some of her time away and help me get my shot down.”

Whatever drills they’re doing on out there, they are working.

Volkening is averaging 25.3 points a game about midway through his senior season and has helped Marengo to a 10-3 record.

As much as mom’s rebounding helps, Volkening also can attribute much of his competitiveness to playing with his two older brothers – Andrew and Ben – both of whom have a few inches on the 6-foot-3, 180-pound Mike.

“I’ve always said that Mike is probably the most competitive of his brothers,” Marengo coach Nate Wright said. “He didn’t get the same kind of height. I think he’s always had that competitive edge knowing he still wanted to play and compete with his older brothers.”

Mike and Ben played together before Ben graduated last year. Mike, who played on varsity as a sophomore, admitted it has been an adjustment without his brother.

That hasn’t been the only adjustment for Marengo.

Volkening was the only returnee who saw significant playing time a year ago. The Indians lost not only Ben to graduation, but also sharpshooting guards Craiton Nice and Zach Knobloch, among others.

“We got off to a lot better start (this season) than I anticipated,” Wright said. “The kids really understand

Alabama: WR Calvin Ridley. The sophomore receiver has had a relatively quiet season compared to his breakout freshman year (67 catches for 733 yards and seven touchdowns). He is capable of great things, and remember in last season’s title game it was Alabama tight end O.J. Howard who broke free for a career-best 208 yards receiving and two touchdowns against Clemson.

TAMPA, Fla. – Nick Saban and Alabama are on the verge of leaving college football history behind.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide face Clemson on Monday night in a College Football Playoff national championship game rematch.

A victory would give Alabama five national championships in eight seasons, a feat never completed at the highest level of the sport during the poll era.

The Tide (14-0) can become the first FBS program to finish 15-0, along with the first to win four championships in span of six seasons, going back-to-back twice in that span.

A case already can be made that Alabama’s current run is the greatest in college football history. Better than Notre Dame back in the grainy black-andwhite footage days of Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy. Better than Miami’s long run of dominance in the 1980s and early ’90s.

Better than anything Alabama did when Bear Bryant was leading the Tide in the 1960s and ’70s.

Another title would give Saban six during the poll era that began in 1936, including a BCS crown at LSU in 2003, matching Bryant for the most of any major-college coach.

With one more championship, there will be no more college football dynasties left to compare to Saban’s.

“I mean, I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, an Alabama native who grew up worshiping Bryant and ended up playing for national championship Tide team in 1992. “Every year is kind of that season of its own and you have your challenges, and it’s a journey of its own.

Swinney’s team stands in the way of an Alabama championship again. The Tigers have not won a national title since 1981.

As Swinney and his players have said over and over, it is the only box left for the program to check as it has taken a place among the elite in college football.

Heisman Trophy runner-up Deshaun Watson said he knew when he decided to come to Clemson in 2012 he was joining a program poised for big things.

“I felt the energy, I bought into what coach Swinney was saying and what he thought the future was going to bring to this program and I wanted to be a part of it,” said Watson, a junior most certainly playing his last college game.

Clemson is working on a streak of six consecutive 10-win seasons, topped only by Alabama’s 10 straight.

Watson, the quarterback from Gainesville, Georgia, has been maybe the biggest reason why Clemson has become Alabama’s final and greatest challenge the past two seasons.

He was spectacular against the Tide in the title game last year with 478 total yards. Unable to stop Watson, Alabama used a surprising onside kick to swing the game its way and win 45-40.

The Crimson Tide defense enters the game ranked tops in the nation in total defense, rushing defense, yards per play allowed and points allowed. It also is responsible for 12 of the team’s stunning 15 nonoffensive touchdowns.

Clemson, meanwhile, is coming off its best defensive effort for the season in a 31-0 Fiesta Bowl win against Ohio State.

The Tide have won 26 straight games. The Tigers are 27-2 the past two seasons.

“Frazier-Ali type of fight,” Alabama tight end O.J. Howard said. “Two great teams, and we’re going to go at it and it’s going to be a great game Monday night.”

Bell, Pittsburgh beat up Miami Steelers RB rushes for team playoff record 167 yards

The Associated Press PITTSBURGH – Le’Veon Bell spent the past two Januarys watching helplessly while the Pittsburgh Steelers tried to make a deep postseason run without him. The ever fluid running back made up for lost time Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

So did Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown, the other members of Pittsburgh’s “Big Three” together in the playoffs for the first time.

Pounding away relentlessly at a defense that hardly seemed interested in stopping him at frigid Heinz Field, Bell ran for a franchise postseason record 167 yards and two scores. The Steelers overwhelmed the beaten-up and mistake-prone Miami Dolphins, 30-12, Sunday.

“We wanted to go out there and make a statement,” Bell said.

Bell, Brown and Roethlisberger, who wore a walking boot on his right foot afterward, more than wiped away the bitter aftertaste of a 30-15 whipping at the hands of the Dolphins in mid-October. Given a shot at redemption, Pittsburgh didn’t let it go to waste. The Steelers (12-5) led by two touchdowns before the game was 10 minutes old on

“Le’Veon was beastly,” said Brown, who finished with five receptions for 124 yards and the two scores.

“All day, controlling the line of scrimmage, just running guys over and finding a way to put the ball in the end zone. Any time he’s playing like that, we’re going to be a hard team to beat.”

At least against teams such as the Dolphins (10-7). Given a chance to prove their first playoff berth in eight years wasn’t a fluke despite being outgained and outscored during the regular season, Miami never found a rhythm. The problem wasn’t the single-digit wind chill or a vicious hit absorbed by quarterback Matt Moore in the second quarter as much as it was the Steelers.

Pittsburgh (12-5) ran off its eighth straight victory to set up a visit to AFC West champion Kansas City (12-4) on Sunday. The Steelers rolled past the Chiefs, 43-14, on Oct. 2.

“We have to understand the same passion and dedication that we put in this week to beat Miami, that’s how Kansas City is going to try to beat us,” Bell said.

At least Bell will be around for the challenge. He missed the playoffs each of the past two seasons with knee injuries. All he did in his postseason debut was break Hall of Famer Franco Harris’ team mark for yards rushing in a playoff game. Harris ran for 158 yards in a Super Bowl win over Minnesota 42 years ago. Bell reached that total by the end of the third quarter.

The Dolphins tried to hype themselves up by running around in short sleeves in the single-digit wind chill during warmups. Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier did them one better, racing around shirtless – as if to send a message that his team is plenty comfortable playing this time of year.

It sure looked like it.

Williams hired as defensive coordinator

The Associated Press CLEVELAND – Gregg Williams revived his coaching career after shame and suspension.

His next challenge: repairing Cleveland’s leaky defense.

Williams was hired Sunday as the Browns’ defensive coordinator, replacing Ray Horton, fired by coach Hue Jackson less than a week after Cleveland concluded a 1-15 season.

Williams was banned by the NFL for one season in 2012 for his involvement in New Orleans’ notorious “Bountygate” scandal. He spent the past three seasons with the Rams.

It’s the second time Horton has been dismissed by the Browns after one sea-

son, and although he appears to be the one taking the fall for the team’s failure, Jackson said that’s not the case.

Jackson said he “agonized” over the decision and understands Horton looks like a convenient scapegoat.

“This isn’t just Ray,” Jackson said on a teleconference. “If anybody, the finger is pointed back at me, it’s not pointed at Ray. “At the end of the day, the whole buck stops with me, so I get it. I know what it looks like and what the perception is, but that’s not what it is and this is my decision.

“This is through my time of thinking through what’s going to be best moving forward for our football team and where I wanted to take it, and what I thought we needed to do to get there.”

Jackson expects there will be other changes on the defensive side as Williams brings in some assistants.

As for Cleveland’s offense, Jackson said he’s “comfortable” that associate head coach Pep Hamilton will stay with the team. Hamilton is considering a position on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan. Hamilton previously worked with Harbaugh at Stanford.

The 58-year-old Williams, who coached Buffalo from 2001 to 2003, will take over a young defense that didn’t make enough big plays in 2016.

“He is one of the better coordinators in the [NFL], and I think that is proven,” he said. “The guy has a ton of skins on the wall doing this in a lot of different places with a lot of different players and a lot of different systems.”

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Aaron Rodgers, master of the Hail Mary pass, struck again in another big moment.

Rodgers overcame a sluggish start and finished with four touchdown passes, including a momentum-swinging 42-yard heave to Randall Cobb at the end of the second quarter, to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 38-13 win Sunday over the New York Giants in an NFC wild-card game.

The Packers move on to face the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round next week.

Rodgers was 25 of 40 for 362 yards, continuing a remarkable run of quarterback play that helped the Packers win their final six games of the regular season to take the NFC North. Cobb finished with five receptions for 116 yards and three scores.

For much of the first half, the Giants’ defense flustered the two-time NFL MVP. They got pressure on Rodgers and the secondary blanketed the

Packers’ talented receiving corps , and a few boos even rained down from the stands after New York built a 6-0 lead on two field goals by former Bears kicker Robbie Gould.

As it turned out, Rodgers was just getting started.

“We hit a Hail Mary. That got us going,” Rodgers said.

Green Bay scored two touchdowns in the final 2:20 of the second quarter, punctuated by another remarkable desperation pass by Rodgers.

With the ball on the Giants’ 42, Rodgers took the snap with 6 seconds left.

He rolled to his right before heaving a throw from about the Packers’ 47. Cobb got behind three defensive backs near the back of the end zone to haul in the pass, getting both feet down before falling out of bounds.

“They boxed us out better than we played it,” Giants coach Ben McAdoo said. “It was a heck of a throw, heck of a catch.”

The Giants looked stunned, just as the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals looked last season after Rodgers pulled off similar feats.

“Davante (Adams) made a bunch of plays,” Rodgers said. “And Randall Cobb, who this offense has been missing for a long time. We’re better with 18 on the field and he showed it tonight.”

Opening line: Cowboys, -4 That loss to Dallas nearly three months ago was part of Green Bay’s 4-6 start. But ever since Rodgers spoke about trying to “run the table,” NFC North champion Green Bay has won seven consecutive games, including 38-13 over the New York Giants in the wild-card round.

Rodgers has 19 TD passes and zero interceptions during the unbeaten run, but one question now is whether favorite target Jordy Nelson, hurt against New York, will be available.

Green Bay’s pass defense, shaky and beset by injuries, might not have an easy time against Dallas QB Dak Prescott, a preternaturally poised rookie who threw for three TDs in the October matchup. The No. 1-seeded Cowboys’ other firstyear sensation, Ezekiel Elliott, gained 157 yards in his first game against the NFL’s eighth-best run defense.

SEAHAWKS at FALCONS 3:35 p.m. Saturday, FOX

Opening line: Falcons, -4 All-Pro quarterback Matt Ryan, a leading MVP contender, and wideout Julio Jones put up NFC South champion Atlanta’s high-powered offense against NFC West champion Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” defense, which is missing injured safety Earl Thomas but still features Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor.

In the first meeting, Ryan threw for three TDs, while Jones finished with seven catches for 139 yards and a score. But most memorable was an incompletion on fourth down with 90 seconds left, when Sherman grabbed Jones’ arm on a deep pass – definitely a 1-on-1 matchup to keep an eye on this time.

Also worth monitoring: How Atlanta’s so-so de-

fense deals with Seattle’s offense, which seemed reborn as Thomas Rawls ran for 161 yards in a 26-6 win over Detroit in the wild-card round.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn used to be Seattle’s defensive coordinator.

“Such a hard-nosed, tough coach, and his team embodies him out there,” Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett said. “It’s like playing ourselves.”

TEXANS at PATRIOTS 7:15 p.m. Saturday, CBS

Opening line: Patriots, -16 New England is one of the biggest betting favorites in a playoff game, and here’s why: Bill Belichick’s Patriots have outscored protegé Bill O’Brien’s Texans by a combined 54-6 in their past two head-to-head games.

As good as Houston’s top-ranked defense has been – Jadeveon Clowney’s interception set the tone for a 27-14 win over Oakland in the wild-card round – there is a world of difference between facing a rookie QB making his first NFL start (Oakland’s Connor Cook) and a three-time Super Bowl MVP (Brady). And Belichick surely will dream up some schemes to bedevil Texans QB Brock Osweiler.

STEELERS at CHIEFS 12:05 p.m. Sunday, NBC

Opening line: even What might matter and might not: Steelers QB Roethlisberger needed a walking boot after hurting his right foot against Miami. If he’s fine next week, it will be fun to watch him, WR Antonio Brown and RB Le’Veon Bell take on Marcus Peters, Eric Berry and the rest of Kansas City’s formidable defense. On the other side of the ball, Steelers LB James Harrison and Co. should be able to handle Chiefs QB Alex Smith, but the question is how Pittsburgh’s defense and special teams will corral rookie speedster Tyreek Hill.

There will be a familiar feel to the NFL playoffs next weekend: Every divisional-round game will be a rematch from the regular season, the first time that’s happened in six years.

In the NFC, it’s the Green Bay Packers at the Dallas Cowboys, and the Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta. In the AFC, it’s the Houston Texans playing as huge underdogs at New England, and the Pittsburgh Steelers at Kansas City.

The first times around, Dallas beat Green Bay, 30-16, in Week 6; Seattle beat Atlanta, 26-24, in Week 6; New England beat Houston, 27-0, in Week 3 with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback; and Pittsburgh beat Kansas City, 43-

14, in Week 4 .

Not that those results necessarily mean much now, especially because none was more recent than October.

The Steelers know how much things can change.

After all, they lost to the Dolphins by 15 points during the regular season, then advanced Sunday with a 30-12 victory over Miami in the wildcard round, their eighth victory in a row.

“We’re not trying to settle vendettas and things of that nature. They beat us fair and square in Week 6. You tip your cap to them for that performance,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. “Today was today. And it’s going to be the same going forward.

What happened during the regular season is of little importance.”

Volkening said he has received interest from numerous Division III schools and even a few D-II schools.

In addition to his scoring ability, he averages about four assists and nine rebounds a game.

Marengo has a chance this year to reach 20 wins for the fourth consecutive season. The last time the Indians had a stretch like that was from 1988 to 1992.

mpotash@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The Hawks’ vaunted puck-possession game is not what it used to be. But they still are finding ways to win. The question is whether they can sustain that success – especially in the postseason.

The Hawks entered Sunday night’s game against the Predators with a mediocre 50.3 Corsi percentage – a Joel Quenneville-era low and 14th in the NHL. The Hawks were in the top six in Corsi percentage from the 2008-09 through the 2014-15 season – ranking fourth or better in six of those seven seasons.

They were 15th last year at 50.7, when they finished third in the Central Division and lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Blues. The Hawks have won 14 games when they’ve been outshot this season, including five games with a differential of 11 or more shots.

“I don’t know if it’s a recipe for success,” forward Patrick Kane said. “But our goaltending’s been great – we’ve probably relied on that a little bit too much this season.

“It’s up to us now to try to keep getting better and improve our puck-possession game, whether it’s hanging

onto pucks or putting pucks in areas where we can get them back; or even if you’re about to change, instead of dumping, bring it back, regroup and get the other guys out there fresh.”

Despite the downward trend the past three seasons – from 53.6 to 50.7 to 50.3 – Kane is hopeful the still-evolving Hawks can regain their touch.

“That’s one of those things I still think we’re kind of learning in there, so if it gets to that level where it was a couple of years ago, great. If not, I still think there’s room to improve of it and try to get better than where we’re at right now.”

Subban still out: The Predators were without former Norris Trophy-winning defenseman P.K. Subban, who missed his 11th consecutive game with an upper-body injury. The Predators are 4-4-3 without Subban.

Subban, acquired from the Canadiens in the offseason for All-Star defenseman Shea Weber, has seven goals

and 10 assists, with a minus-11 differential in 29 games this season.

Kane awaits payoff: Kane was unwilling – or unable – to divulge the payoff from teammate Jonathan Toews after Kane won their bet on the USA-Canada final in the World Junior Championships. It is presumed that Toews will have to show up at the United Center wearing a USA jersey.

“We’ll see,” Kane said. “You guys will have to wait and see, I guess. It’s nothing too crazy.”

The USA victory itself was thrilling for Kane, a Buffalo, New York, native.

“It was awesome,” Kane said. “You come off the ice after a big win against Buffalo – it was pretty cool having 25 guys in the room watching the shootout.

“It was fun to watch. Obviously cool to see the Americans win. It seems like the future’s bright for USA hockey – not only the World Juniors, but the young American players in the league.

It’s good to see.”

CHICAGO – Ryan Hartman isn’t into style points.

“A goal is a goal,” he said.

The Blackhawks rookie from West Dundee knows his job is more about grit, perseverance and hard work than anything else, and he ended up right where he should be Sunday night – at the right place at the right time.

Hartman turned a fortuitous bounce into a tie-breaking goal and parlayed his good fortune into a third-period hat trick – capped by two empty-net goals – that led the Hawks to a 5-2 victory over the Nashville Predators before 21,822 at the United Center.

Hartman scored the tie-breaking goal at 11:49 of the third period when a shot by Richard Panik in front of Predators goalie Pekka Rinne popped up in the air and off Hartman’s

hip for a 3-2 Hawks’ lead.

With Panik going between his legs for a shot on goal, Hartman was rushing the net from the right side and defended by Mike Fisher. Adding to the confusion, the net was dislodged just as the puck crossed the goal line. Upon review, officials determined the net was dislodged after the puck crossed the goal line and that Hartman did not direct the puck into the net with his glove.

“It was just a battle in front,” Hartman said. “Pans made a good play at the net and I don’t really know how it came to me. But I was trying to get to the net and I just felt it go off my hip. So, a lucky one.”

Hartman will take it and so will the Hawks (26-12-5), who won their third consecutive game after a stretch of five losses in six games (1-4-1). Artemi Panarin and Niklas Hjalmarsson also scored goals. Patrick Kane had three assists.

It’s worth noting the Predators (17-16-7) were short-handed.

Not only have they been without All-Star defenseman P.K. Subban for 11 games, but they also were missing forwards James Neal, Colin Wilson and Viktor Arvidsson, their second-leading scorer. The Hawks were playing their fourth game without center Marcus Kruger.

Panarin gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead with a particular nasty one-timer from the left circle off a pass from Kane. It was Panarin’s 17th goal and 41st point of the season.

The lead lasted only 45 seconds, as a neutral-zone turnover led to Mattias Ekholm’s goal that tied the score at 1. Ekholm, taking a pass from Fisher, beat Crawford from the left circle.

Hjalmarsson gave the Hawks the lead when he took a pass from Kane and fired a shot from the point that went through an Artem Anisimov screen and past Rinne to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead at 14:04 of the first period. It was Hjalmarsson’s fifth goal of the season.
