Criticism of Crystal Lake teen’s torture coverage was fair, heard “Sickening” was the word Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson used to describe the abduction and torture of a Crystal Lake teen during a Facebook Live broadcast in Chicago earlier this week.

It seemed to fit the circumstances of the crime perfectly, so Northwest Herald journalists, myself included, decided to use it as our main cover in Thursday’s print edition.

According to Chicago police, the Crystal Lake 18-year-old was abducted by four other young adults. As the Facebook Live video so disturbingly shows, he was bound, gagged and assaulted all while the suspects had a good time and defiantly webcast the abuse online.

The abuse itself is sickening enough. To have the audacity to record the abuse and webcast it live? That’s a whole other level of sickening.

As the story broke Wednesday evening, the Facebook video went viral online. National media joined Chicago-area media in reporting the story.

The video wasn’t just part of the story. It was the story.

To watch four human beings treat a fellow human being with such contempt was, well, sickening.

It was frightening.

It was appalling.

But it also was the story.

We at the Northwest Herald decided to publish blurry still frames from the video both in print and online. On the newspaper cover, we printed a photo of the victim gagged and sitting in a corner as well as face shots of the four suspects. Inside, on page A3, we published two more video still shots of the victim, one a disturbing close-up of his gagged face, as well as yet another image on page A7.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Dan McCaleb were angry with how we covered the story, in particular for using the still frames of the victim. The common themes of the criticisms were that we revictimized the Crystal Lake teen by publishing his image and that we also sensationalized the story.

I can understand the criticism and appreciate that point of view.

Northwest Herald editors had a lengthy discussion about our coverage Thursday morning and what we’d do differently.

While I think the images were an important part of telling the story as completely as we could in print, in hindsight, I would not have published so many photos of the victim, particularly the tight shot of his gagged face that appeared on page A3.

I wish we had that one back.

Our sympathies are with the victim and his family. Our goal was not to exploit him but to tell this story in the most informative way possible and to demand attention to this heinous attack to ensure that his tormentors receive justice.

Chicago police on Thursday charged the four suspects with multiple felonies in connection to the abduction and abuse. We’ll continue to keep you informed about this sad story.

And we’ll also continue to listen to your feedback on how you think we’re doing.

WOODSTOCK – An Algonquin resident and former teacher has started as the new director of the Challenger Learning Center for Science and Technology of Aurora University in Woodstock.

Brigitte Redman said that her focus in her new role is to excite students and teachers about the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

“I just really feel like there’s a huge opportunity to increase exposure to students,” Redman said. “And to maybe get them to feel more confident going into those areas.”

At the center, students are introduced to STEM through activities ranging from space missions to a comet and Mars, to coding workshops.

When students leave the center after a field trip, Redman said she always hears

the same phrase as they walk out the door: “Best field trip ever.”

“I think a lot of children think that science is hard or math is hard, or what is engineering?” Redman said. “And technology is your phone and video. Well, that’s not really all there is.”

Redman has worked with the center for about three years as a commander, and officially took on her new role as director in November, following former director Rebecca Dolmon.

Redman has a background as an elementary teacher with endorsements in science, reading and special education.

She started in the Canadian school system before moving to the U.S. in 1996 and teaching at schools including Crystal Lake Montessori School.

In addition to building students’ confidence in STEM, Redman hopes to increase teachers’ confidence with the subjects.

The center has started to offer outreach

programs geared toward elementary school classes where coding and physics lessons are brought into the classroom, Redman said.

“When we’re talking about activities for younger students, it really is just getting their hands on [projects] and letting them explore and not having all the answers for them – letting them find those answers,” Redman said.

Another new program coming at the start of next school year will be an updated Expedition to Mars program, thanks to a $25,000 grant from NASA, Redman said.

Through her time as director, Redman said she hopes to bring new missions to the center and help students and teachers embrace STEM. “I hope to just bring an openness to new ideas, and to bring more of an open mind to bringing STEM ideas and activities into classrooms every day by seeing them here,” Redman said.

Ex-police officer accused of illegal search won’t face perjury charge

jreiland@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office will not pursue perjury charges against an ex-Woodstock police officer who is being sued for allegedly performing an illegally prolonged traffic stop and falsely testifying to a grand jury.

Officer Eric Schmidtke resigned from his position in November after a federal lawsuit was filed against him, K-9 Officer Sharon Freund and the city of Woodstock.

The lawsuit claims Schmidtke wrote a false police report and falsely testified about the traffic stop of Woodstock man Philip M. Williams.

Schmidtke pulled over Williams on Aug. 28 for having an expired license plate sticker. Schmidtke noted in his police report that he “detected a hint of cannabis emitting from inside the motor vehicle” and called for a K-9 unit.

Filed by civil rights attorneys Meyer & Kiss LLC, the lawsuit said that Williams did not give permission for Schmidtke to search his car, but alleged that he was told he was unable to leave despite a lack of probable cause or legal justification to keep him de-

tained.

Freund arrived with her police dog, Blue, several minutes later, and the K-9 detected the presence of drugs in Williams’ vehicle. Police then discovered a duffel bag containing 17 pounds of marijuana in the trunk, according to court documents. A video taken by Schmidtke’s dash cam shows that Schmidtke told Freund he didn’t smell any marijuana during the traffic stop.

Williams was indicted on felony drug charges and cited for driving without valid registration and driving without proof of insurance, but all charges were dismissed by the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office on Oct. 20. Williams’ criminal attorney, Mark Facchini, filed a petition to expunge his client’s arrest record but voluntarily withdrew the petition without prejudice Wednesday in McHenry County Court.

McHenry County State’s Attorney Patrick Kenneally said after reviewing all evidence and reports he did not believe they had enough evidence to prove a case against Schmidtke beyond a reasonable doubt.

Kenneally said proving perjury requires more than just showing someone lied under oath. The point

in question at the grand jury proceeding where Schmidtke testified was whether the state’s attorney’s office had probable cause to charge Williams with possession of cannabis. The evidence presented was the fact that there was cannabis found in his trunk.

Because Schmidtke’s alleged false statements did not relate to the material issue, despite the fact that it was made under oath, Kenneally said he didn’t not believe they had sufficient evidence to prove perjury.

Williams also alleged in the lawsuit that his constitutional rights were violated. Louis Meyer, Williams’ attorney, has said his client felt profiled and has been pulled over more than once in the McHenry County area. He is seeking unspecified monetary damages.

Meyer said he was not surprised the state’s attorney’s office declined to pursue charges, and their civil case will proceed with or without further criminal proceedings.

“It does send a bad message. At a minimum officers now know you could get the case thrown out, but you won’t be held accountable for it,” Meyer said.

“Whether he was charged or not, it doesn’t change how we proceed with this case.”

nlinhart@shawmedia.com McHENRY – The Rotary Club of McHenry plans to push back the 2017 dates for the club’s signature fundraising event, Blues, Brews & BBQ’s.

The new dates will be Aug. 18 through Aug. 20 at Petersen Park, 4300 Peterson Park Road, McHenry.

The annual festival traditionally has taken place during the first weekend in August, but Rotary officials have rescheduled this year’s festival to ensure there’s no scheduling conflict with the McHenry County Fair.

“The conflict made it more difficult for us to get food vendors, and the fair is very popular,” event chairwoman Donna Schaefer said. “Our hope is that this will increase attendance.”

Last year’s event raised $25,000, which was nearly half of the $44,000 raised in 2015.

“It could be a variety of factors, but the conflict with the fair seemed obvious,” Schaefer said.

Duffin said the victim and Hill knew one another from attending school together in Aurora.

At a news conference Thursday in Crystal Lake, the victim’s family said he is doing “as well as he could be at this time.”

“We’re so grateful for all the prayers and efforts that led to the safe return of our brother,” the victim’s brotherin-law, David Boyd, said on behalf of the family. “We are fully aware of the charges being brought against the offenders.”

The family said they had seen the video, and the attack “should never have happened.” They asked for prayers and privacy as they heal.

Johnson said they have statements from all four suspects, and Duffin said they were not apologetic for their actions.

Authorities did not specify at the news conference under what grounds the defendants were charged with hate crimes. Under Illinois law, hate crime charges can be filed not only for attacks based on racial or religious reasons, but

The Carpentersville Police Department said in a statement that there is no information confirming that Hill is a resident. Likewise, the report filed with Streamwood police stated that Quadcomm, the dispatching agency for Carpentersville, confirmed that the address Hill gave during a previous encounter with Streamwood police does not exist.

report Monday with the Streamwood Police Department, according to the report obtained under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. Streamwood police listed him as endangered because of his mental health history and the fact he had last taken his medication on Saturday.

Hill and the victim ended up Tuesday at the West Side apartment of Brittany and Tanisha Covington, who are sisters. Apparently, a play fight between the victim and Hill got out of control, leading the suspects to get angry and overpower and bind the victim. The assault, part of which was streamed live by the suspects, took place over a sixhour period, Duffin said.

The victim escaped when the sisters went to a downstairs apartment to challenge a neighbor who threatened to call the police because of the noise. The sisters kicked in the neighbor’s door, prompting the police to be called and the sisters each being charged with burglary, police said.

Officer Michael Donnelly, one of the police officers responding to the call about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, said he noticed the victim and Hill walking down the street and stopped them because the victim was bloodied and battered, wearing a tank top, jean shorts and sandals in the cold.

Duffin said the victim has been reunited with his parents.

Federal agency clears Longmeadow’s environmental impact Construction in Algonquin could start this spring

hprokop@shawmedia.com ALGONQUIN – With a recent finding by the Federal Highway Administration that said Longmeadow Parkway will have no new significant effects on the environment, the project can move to the next step of development.

Although the project has received criticism from some residents and local officials who contest that it will not affect the environment, Steve Coffinbargar, assistant director of transportation for the Kane County Division of Transportation, said, “We’ve met our obligation to the environmental aspects associated with the project.”

Throughout the corridor, which runs from Huntley Road east to Route 62 in Barrington Hills, there will be a median between the road and a bike path, Coffinbargar said. The project also adds another Fox River bridge crossing that will require a toll to pass.

The road will include features that blend in with the natural environment, Coffinbargar said.

Project directors have worked with municipalities to gather feedback in regard to landscaping on both sides of the river, he said.

Total construction costs are estimated at about $115 million, according to KDOT, with about $14 million from federal sources, about $39 million from the state of Illinois and about $61 million coming from Kane County.

Having less traffic on roads and easier access to Algonquin’s corporate campus are two reasons Algonquin Village President John Schmitt said he has supported the project.

“We’re really, really looking forward to seeing this completed,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt said having fewer idle cars will be a benefit to the environment, and the project has been designed to give ample space between homes and the road.

“There’s a lot of children in this neighborhood,” Strapko said. “The noise alone with all the traffic – it’s not good. This is not the kind of roadway you put though a small residential area.”

The Stop Longmeadow Tollbridge Facebook group has more than 600 followers, and in the summer it raised about $10,000 to pursue a lawsuit to stop the highway construction, which Strapko said is ongoing.

Arlene Harriet Guzzardo, age 88 of McHenry passed away on January 5, 2017 in Lake Zurich surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 20, 1928 in Chicago to William and Harriet Kamprowski.

She married the love of her life, Raymond Guzzardo on May 8, 1948 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in McHenry, IL. Arlene was a lifelong homemaker and loving mother and grandmother.

Lorraine Ivy Johnson Kopsell, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at JourneyCare Pepper Family Hospice Center in Barrington with family by her side.

She was born on February 3, 1931 to Eugene and Helen (Diedrick) Johnson of Crystal Lake. She graduated from Crystal Lake Central High School in 1949 and also

attended Blackburn College. She worked at Pure Oil Co. in Crystal Lake. On June 26, 1954 she married Willard Kopsell.

She enjoyed doing volunteer work and was actively involved with First Congregational Church, Meals-on-Wheels and Sherman Hospital. She was an avid reader and member of the Crystal Lake Public Library. It was not unusual for her to read a book per day. She also loved traveling the country with her family, especially annual trips to Cocoa Beach, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Joan Schiavone; brother, Gene Johnson; husband, Willard Kopsell; sister-inlaw, Ruth Petschow; brother-in-law, Arthur Kopsell; and nephews, Scott Johnson and Jim Petschow.

Survivors include son, Robert (Kathy) Kopsell; granddaughter, Jill (Kevin) Muradian; great-grandson, Benjamin Muradian; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Margaret M. Sundby, 88, of Petersburg, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Sunny Acres Nursing Home.

Margaret was born on August 8, 1928, in Chicago the daughter of Caesar and Mary Kalck LeClercq. She married Robert George Sundby on April 21, 1951 in Chicago; he preceded her in death on February 8,1982.

Margaret worked for Northern Illinois Medical Center and retired as the Director of Human Services.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert George Sundby; and sister, Jeannette Bessler.

She is survived by two sons, Don (Carla) Sundby of Petersburg and David (Renee) Sundby of Janesville, WI; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Stephen H. Otis, 80, of Marengo, passed away suddenly at his home on January 2nd, 2017.

Born November 9th, 1936 in Belvidere Illinois, he was the son of Elsa (Behm) and Stephen W Otis. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy A Slaughter, on January 28th, 1956 in the parsonage of the United Methodist Church. He grew up in the heart of Marengo and at an early age he started at a lifelong passion of construction with his father. A veteran of the United States Naval Reserve as a Seabee, he broadened his skills achieving the rank of builder second class. He continued this passion through Otis Construction and Otis Building Supply by building hundreds of homes in the Marengo area. He provided an opportunity for young students to learn a lifelong trade through the high school CWT (Cooperative Work Training Program) from 1968-1984.

He was an active member of the First Baptist Church, in Marengo. Serving as the regional president of the American Baptist Men, he participated in building projects at Judson College, BlackHawk Camp and Lake Springfield, often taking his younger grandsons along with him. One of his proudest accomplishments was overseeing the construction of a teacher housing project for the Hopi Mission School in Arizona in 1986. He also taught bible study.

Every May you could also find him as the head egg chef at the annual May breakfast.

He had a love for the community in which he lived serving as a member of the Marengo Planning and Zoning Commission, the Marengo Township Assessor for seven years, on the Board of Education of Marengo Community High school from 1970 to 1979, on the SEDOM (Special Education District of McHenry County) executive board from 1970 to 1974, the McHenry County Regional Board of School Trustees and the McHenry County College Board of Trustees.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren attending their sporting events and working on projects in his shop. In retirement, he was a founding member of the Dino’s breakfast club and a gentleman farmer on his ancestral homestead where his manger scene will be greatly missed. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor,caring ways and his willingness to lend a helping hand. His love of life was his trademark.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years; Children, Stephen J Otis, Elizabeth A (Joseph) Henning and Jennifer W L (William) Hoeske; Grandchildren, Ryan Carr, Stephanie (Dave) Fanthorpe, J. Benjamin Henning, Trae Hoeske, Jesse Henning, Lynsey Hoeske; Great-grandchildren, Kerrigan Carr and June Fanthorpe; Sisters, Jeanne (Jim) Schaefer and Midge (Lowell) Wagner; Two special dogs, Mable and Sparkle.

He was welcomed into his Heavenly home by his parents; and several other loved ones.

Goal to end veteran homelessness unmet

The Obama administration set a goal in 2010 of ending homelessness among veterans in 2015, and first lady Michelle Obama challenged mayors nationwide to do so in 2014. Although the deadline passed without the goal being met, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness said it won’t rest until every com-

munity has reached the goal.

The nonprofit Community Solutions also ran a campaign to end veteran homelessness by the end of 2015 and chronic homelessness one year later, called “Zero: 2016.” That work continues under a new name, “Built for Zero.”

Thursday to house as many veterans as possible in 30 days, saying that homelessness typically increases after the holidays and that winter is a tough time.

Obama’s “audacious” goal galvanized people, McDonald told the AP in an interview. As outreach and data collection improved, he said, officials realized estimates were low.

“I think we’re going to make a big dent this year, and I would say within a couple of years, we should be there,” McDonald said.

The number of homeless veterans nationwide is down 47 percent, or about 35,000 people, since 2010, but there still are about 40,000 more, HUD said in August.

To get homeless veterans into permanent homes, the Obama administration used a program that was created in 2008 and combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services from the VA. Nearly 90,000 so-called HUD-VASH vouchers have been awarded, with $635 million appropriated for vouchers from 2008 to 2016. Many places were able to house most of their homeless veterans, but vouchers became harder to use as the housing market tightened.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Pledges by President Barack Obama and a national nonprofit organization to end homelessness among veterans did not meet their goal. But advocates see improvement, and the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs said Thursday that “we should be there” within a couple of years.

Homelessness among veterans has been effectively ended in Virginia, Connecticut and Delaware and in about 35 communities, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. But many veterans still sleep on the streets elsewhere.

Still, as Obama’s term ends, advocates call the national push a success because many veterans did get homes, and the ambitious goal created urgency. About two dozen nonprofits, government officials and homeless veterans in 17 states and Washington spoke with The Associated Press about the effectiveness of the effort and the challenges they faced.

“It has been the best kind of failure I’ve experienced,” said Chris Ko, director of homeless initiatives for the United Way of Greater Los Angeles. “It’s black and white. Did we reach it? No. Did we succeed in the broader effort?

SPRINGFIELD – A Springfield medical group is requiring patients insured by the state to pay half of their expected surgery bills up front.

The requirement from the Orthopedic Center of Illinois comes at a time when payments to all providers for the care of state workers, retirees and dependents insured through the State Employees’ Group Insurance Program total $3.66 billion. Those payments are overdue a year and a half or more, the State Journal-Register reported.

National Guard soldiers return from Afghanistan

SPRINGFIELD – About 30 Illinois Army National Guard members who served in Afghanistan during the past year have returned home during the past few weeks.

Officials said members of the 233rd Military Police Company based in Springfield came home after completing a post-mobilization program at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The soldiers were mobilized in January 2016 as part of a personal security detail.

The 233rd was responsible for escorting general officers, VIPs, U.S. and foreign dignitaries, advisers and NATO officials throughout Kabul and the region.

They also guarded the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. military base.

Nine of the soldiers were awarded the Bronze Star. One was given the Meritorious Service Medal. Nineteen received the

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said he’s discussed a pending civil rights report on the Chicago police with President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to head the Department of Justice.

The Illinois Democrat spoke to reporters after Wednesday’s meeting in Washington, D.C., with Sen. Jeff Sessions, a Republican from Alabama.

Durbin said he sought assurances that if Sessions is confirmed as U.S. attorney general, he would address problems identified by the department.

The department launched its investigation into police practices after a video showed a white officer fatally shooting black teen Laquan McDonald 16 times. The video prompted protests and demands for reforms.

U of I employees to get 2 percent midyear raises

URBANA – University of Illinois employees will receive a 2 percent raise in March after the school had to put pay increases on hold for the past two years.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported that a school spokesman said the raises will take effect in February and the money will show up in March paychecks.

University President Tim Killeen put general raises on hold for a second-straight year last summer because of the state budget impasse. But Killeen said he was optimistic the school could provide a midyear raise by making cuts elsewhere.

Killeen said most of the money to fund the raises will come from about 500 positions that haven’t been refilled over the past year. UI officials said the 2 percent raise will cost about $33 million a year.

National intelligence chief: No doubt Russia interfered in election The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – Brushing aside Donald Trump’s dismissiveness, the nation’s intelligence chief insisted Thursday that U.S. agencies are more confident than ever that Russia interfered in America’s recent presidential election. And he called the former Cold War foe an “existential threat” to the nation.

Did Russian hacking sway the results? There’s no way for U.S. agencies to know, said James Clapper, the director of national intelligence.

Asked about the possible effect of the disclosure of private information stolen by hackers, Clapper said, “The intelligence community can’t gauge the impact it had on the choices the electorate made.” But he did say Russian hacking “did not change any vote tallies.”

Clapper’s testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee was short on concrete evidence of Russian activities, but it raised the stakes in the intelligence community’s standoff with Trump. Clapper indicated the agencies he leads would not back down in their assessment, even if that threatens a prolonged crisis of confidence with their next commander in chief.

That puts the pressure back on Trump, who has raised the possibility of more positive relations with Russia and has repeatedly disparaged the U.S. intelligence agencies. He will be briefed Friday on the classified evidence concerning Russian interference.

Shortly after Thursday’s hearing, news leaked that Trump would soon name former Republican Sen. Dan Coats of Indiana to replace Clapper after the new president takes office.

In a joint report that roiled the presidential campaign last fall, the Homeland Security Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said the U.S. was confident about foreign meddling, including Russia’s hacking of Democratic emails.

“We stand actually more resolutely on the strength of that statement,” Clapper said Thursday. He declined to discuss whether Russia’s interference was aimed at helping Trump win.

An unclassified version of the report will be released next week, Clapper said. That version, expected to be a fraction of the length of the classified one, is not likely to answer all the questions about Russia’s actions. Exactly how the U.S. monitors its adversaries in cyberspace is a closely guarded secret, since revealing such details could help foreign governments further obscure

their activities.

“I think the public should know as much about this as possible,” Clapper told the senators. “And so we’ll be as forthcoming as we can, but there are some sensitive and fragile sources and methods here.”

Clapper was less shy about declaring Russia “an existential threat to the United States.” That’s strong rhetoric that harkens back to the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union, language Obama has avoided. For his part, Trump has embraced the possibility of warmer U.S.-Russian ties.

Republican John McCain of Arizona, chairman of the Senate panel, pressed Clapper as to whether Russia’s actions constituted an “act of war.”

The intelligence director said that was “a very heavy policy call,” more appropriate for others in the government to decide.

Obama announced sanctions against Russia late last year, a move Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said was akin to throwing a pebble.

“I’m ready to throw a rock,” Graham said.

Mobile video changes the way we witness crime

NEW YORK – Mobile video is changing the way we witness crime, from live footage of a mentally disabled man tortured by four assailants, to a recording that led to the manslaughter conviction of an Israeli soldier, to the body cameras designed to keep police accountable.

We’re still all wrestling with the implications.

In theory, such videos should make it easier to hold criminals, including police officers who violate the law, accountable. In practice, that hasn’t always worked out the way proponents had hoped, although smartphone video played a big role in elevating public awareness of police violence.

And sometimes the presence of a camera might actually encourage criminal activity, or at least deter bystanders from helping victims.

SCENE OF THE CRIME

It’s not clear how any of that might have played out in an incident on this week, when attackers used Facebook Live to stream the beating and torture of a man with mental health problems.

They threatened him with a knife, cut off his clothing and forced him to drink

The assault went on for up to two days, according to police, although it’s unclear how much of it was streamed on Facebook Live. Police have arrested four people in connection with the crime.

Last year, an Ohio woman plead not guilty to charges of rape, kidnapping and other crimes for live-streaming the rape of a friend on Periscope, Twitter’s live-streaming app. Prosecutors said Marina Lonina continued to film the assault despite the victim’s cries for help, caught up in the attention the livestream was getting. Lonina’s attorney said she was recording the attack as evidence.

During a Thursday news conference about the Chicago assault – itself livestreamed on Facebook – Chicago Police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin noted, “I can’t understand why anyone puts anything on Facebook.”

While live broadcast gives them a sense of immediacy, many live videos only go viral well after the fact. So it may not really matter whether a video is live or not, just that it’s a concrete record of a crime that happened, visible to all who dare to click.

Even then, video evidence doesn’t necessarily lead to criminal convictions. In South Carolina, a white police officer was charged with the 2015 shooting of an unarmed black man after a traffic stop. A video shot by a bystander clearly shows Keith Scott being shot eight times in the back. But the jury was unable to reach a verdict and forced a mistrial. In another case in Ohio, the two sides in the trial clashed over a video from a police officer’s body-worn camera that showed him shooting an unarmed man after a traffic stop. That case also ended in mistrial. The officer, Ray Tensing, will be retried.

As for users, a quick trip down memory lane confirms that some people will do almost anything in front of a camera to get online attention. Before Twitter gutted its quirky video-sharing app Vine, a popular phrase among users was “do it for the Vine,” the idea that people will do anything just for the sake of a six-second Vine video.

S.C. church slaying victims remembered

The Rev. Anthony Thompson said his wife, Myra, was a dedicated person of faith who did her best to enjoy life.

Thompson cried as he described a conversation with his wife about their future plans to move and pursue studies and careers in the church.

“She was my world, and she was gone,” he said. “I’m just glad to know she’s somewhere ... where somebody can take care of her better than I ever could.”

Myra Thompson seemed to know something would happen to her. A month before the shootings, daughter Denise Quarles said her mother talked about being confident she’d raised her children with strong morals that would serve them after her death. She also made it clear what she wanted, and didn’t want, for her funeral: Use red nail polish and don’t let the funeral home dye her hair gray or cake-on the makeup.

On the night of the shooting, Quarles said she woke suddenly after a dream about watching her mother drown and hearing a voice saying her mother was gone. Quarles picked up her phone, checked Facebook and learned of the shooting – and her mother’s likely fate.

“I just feel like that was God who spoke to me,” she said. “That’s why I know where my mom is. She’s in heaven, with everybody else. She’s fine.”

CHARLESTON, S.C. – One by one, friends and family members walked up to the witness stand and testified about the nine black church members gunned down during a Bible study in Charleston on June 17, 2015. They described personalities, future plans and final conversations.

The testimony came during the sentencing phase of Dylann Roof’s death penalty trial. The same jury that convicted the 22-year-old white man of hate crimes and other charges will decide whether to sentence him to life in prison or death. Here are highlights from the testimony Wednesday and Thursday.

Videos give harsh glimpse into evil world

What happened to a Crystal Lake teen who suffers from mental illness paints another horrific picture of what is happening to individuals in some Chicago neighborhoods and the general coarsening of culture.

The heinous humiliation and torture was broadcast live on the internet via Facebook and YouTube complete with racial taunting and the stomach-churning treatment of a human being.

The inclination from any decent person is to look away. While not everyone needed to have witnessed this spectacle, as a culture we must examine it for what it is and acknowledge there is real hatred perpetrated against real people in these neighborhoods every day, and we just witnessed it perpetrated against someone from our backyard.

In addition to hate crime charges, Jordan Hill, 18, of Carpentersville; Tesfaye Cooper, 18, of Chicago; Brittany Covington, 18, of Chicago; and Tanisha Covington, 24, of Chicago, all face charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

From our suburban perch, we are saddened and troubled by the senseless shooting deaths in Chicago neighborhoods, many of which are the deaths of innocent bystanders. The numbers have become staggering – Chicago ended 2016 with 762 homicides, more than New York City and Los Angeles combined.

While we are saddened, the sheer volume and media coverage leave many numb. When something horrific happens to one of our neighbors, that numbness turns to anger. While we’re extremely grateful that he’s alive, we want his attackers to face justice.

This is what life is like every day for so many in North Lawndale, Austin, Englewood, Garfield Park and other Chicago neighborhoods that have turned into nationally notorious war zones. There are good people in all of those neighborhoods just seeking safety every day. Justice sounds as likely to them as unicorns grazing in city parks.

Based on the evidence we’ve been allowed to see, the hate crimes and other charges appear to be justified. The defendants are entitled to a presumption of innocence, but if they are found guilty of these heinous crimes, we hope the punishment fits.

In the meantime, we hope all those who prey on the weak and innocent in these neighborhoods without regard to human life, much less dignity, meet similar fates.

Congress’ ethics reform controversy The 115th Congress flopped into Washington on Tuesday with House Republicans proposing and then dropping marginal changes to an internal ethics office. The reversal is an unforced political error, but the GOP is right that the investigative body has the power to destroy reputations without due process.

The office is composed of political grandees, often former members, and it has no prosecutorial power. But it conducts investigations into members or staffers and makes recommendations to the House Ethics Committee. The proposal limited what information can be released to the public and barred the committee from having a press secretary.

Speaker Paul Ryan and other House leaders opposed the rule as badly timed. But the rank and file adopted the idea Monday night anyway, only to dump it on Tuesday after denunciations from the Democratic-media complex.

The left rounded up callers to deluge Republican switchboards for “gutting” the outfit. Donald

Trump couldn’t resist piling on with a pair of tweets: “With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority.”

The reality is that the office is at best redundant and perhaps worse. Democrats created the office in 2008 to deflect attention from a crush of corruption scandals, including charges against at least three members. The left is pitching the place as an essential institution of self-government, but the Senate manages to function without a similar office.

As it is, the ethics office is a roving investigator that can publish reports with details that may not be accurate and can damage a reputation with little or no proof of guilt. Evidence of wrongdoing in travel, campaign finances and other matters can be handled by the House Ethics Committee, and if necessary law-enforcement agencies. Both are politically accountable, unlike the indepen-

dent office.

The burning question in the media has been whether Trump or public outcry deserve credit for the GOP’s about-face. In any case, House Republicans will pay a political price for trying, then failing, to rush through ethics changes – after running on draining the D.C. swamp. By caving so precipitously at the first sign of opposition, they’ve also invited more such pressure campaigns.

The upshot is an embarrassing start for a new GOP Congress that is supposed to be stalwart for pursuing conservative reform no matter the opposition. Progressives are elated that their Trump “resistance” project notched a victory and will continue the fact-free outrage campaigns. If you think the political pressure is intense on ethics rules, wait until the left completes its nationwide talent search for the person most harmed by the GOP’s health-care proposals. Trump will also figure he can rout any opposition with a tweet, not that he’s known for restraint.

In response, House committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes argued that the Director of National Intelligence was “obligated to comply” with a House request, and that the committee was “deeply concerned” by the DNI’s “intransigence.”

The intelligence community’s response: Fuhgeddaboudit.

So the wait to learn more goes on.

Meanwhile, a number of Democrats are arguing that the evidence is so overwhelming that Congress must establish a special investigating committee, even though there will already be multiple investigations of the Russia matter in the standing committees of Congress.

“An attack against our election system is an attack on our very way of life and must not go unchallenged,” added Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, vice-chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The argument is taking place in the context of deep distrust of the intelligence community among some Republicans. Some GOP lawmakers believe the IC has been – to put it diplomatically – less than forthcoming about Benghazi, intelligence concerning the Islamic State, and intel concerning Osama bin Laden.

Already wary, they became more so when the IC refused to brief the House about the Russia affair.

There’s a greater context, as well.

Many times during the campaign, Trump declared the Iraq War a “big, fat mistake.” At Mar-a-Lago, Trump referenced the intelligence debacle that led to the war. “If you look at the weapons of mass destruction, that was a disaster, and they were wrong,” Trump said. “And so I want them to be sure.”

Now, some of the same people who in 2002 and 2003 pushed for war based on erroneous intelligence –

Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham are two – are pushing to take a hard line on Russia. It’s no surprise that some Republicans – lawmakers who have no illusions about Russia and its hacking in the past – want to see more evidence before going all-in on the new allegations. At the very least, they want to know what the intelligence community knows before signing off on a special congressional investigation of the hacking.

Trump is scheduled to meet with members of the Hill intelligence committees Friday. “The president-elect needs to sit down with the heads of the intelligence communities ... and get a full briefing on what they knew, why they knew it, whether or not the Obama administration’s response was in proportion to the actions taken,” spokesman Sean Spicer said.

Meanwhile, Trump himself is signaling there’s more to the story that he knows but the public doesn’t.

“I know a lot about hacking,” he said Saturday night. “And hacking is a very hard thing to prove. So it could be somebody else. And I also know things that other people don’t know, and so they cannot be sure of the situation.”

President-elect Donald Trump stirred yet more controversy Saturday night when, as he entered his New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago, he said he is not convinced the intelligence community is sure about allegations Russian hackers sought to influence the election.

“I just want them to be sure, because it’s a pretty serious charge,” Trump told reporters, “and I want them to be sure.”

The next morning, Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, scoffed at Trump’s statement. “This is the overwhelming judgment of the intelligence community and, frankly, all of the members of the intelligence committees in Congress, Democrats and Republicans,” Schiff said on ABC Sunday. “None of us have any question about this. The only one who does apparently is Donald Trump.”

That is not the case. There are, in fact, members of the intelligence committees who do have questions about this. Yes, many Republicans believe Russian hackers tried to mess with the U.S. presidential campaign in some way, mostly because they believe Russian hackers are always trying to mess with U.S. systems and institutions. But when it comes to solid information on precisely what was done, and

Sears to sell Craftsman tool brand Stanley Black & Decker plans to expand brand to more stores

The Associated Press NEW YORK – After controlling the Craftsman name for 90 years, troubled department store operator Sears said it will sell the famous tool brand to Stanley Black & Decker Inc. Stanley, which makes and sells tools under the DeWalt and Black & Decker names, wants to grow the Craftsman brand by selling its products in more stores outside of Sears. Today, only 10 percent of Craftsman products are sold in other stores.

Sears said it will continue to sell Craftsman, including at its Kmart and Sears Hometown stores. The Hoffman Estates-based company first took control of Craftsman in 1927 when it bought the trademark for $500.

Sears has struggled, losing money for years as its revenue fell. The company also announced plans Thursday to close 150 stores, 10 percent of its total 1,500 locations. And last week, the company said it received a credit facility for up to $500 million to provide it with cash

Shares of Sears Holdings Corp., which are down about 48 percent in the past 12 months, rose 3 cents to close at $10.39 Thursday.

Stanley will pay Sears about $900

million for Craftsman, which includes $525 million when the deal closes this year, $250 million after three years and a percentage of sales for 15 years. After 15 years, Sears will start paying Stanley 3 percent of the Craftsman sales it makes.

Shares of Stanley, based in New Britain, Connecticut, rose $1.87 to $118.35.

Stanley said it plans to hire more workers and open a new U.S. plant to make more Craftsman products, but didn’t provide details.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Country music star Mel Tillis is receiving home care after surgery and treatment for a digestive disease.

Tillis’ publicist, Don Murry Grubbs, said in a statement that the 84-year-old was hospitalized in Nashville a year ago with diverticulitis and later underwent colon surgery.

Grubb said Tillis is recovering at his home in Ocala, Florida, “where he is being cared for by nurses as needed” and getting physical therapy.

Grubbs said Tillis is trying to get stronger and that his “vitals are good and his sense of humor is very much intact.”

Megyn Kelly leaving Fox News, will host 2 shows on NBC NEW YORK – Megyn Kelly, the Fox News star who’s had a contentious relationship with President-elect Donald Trump, said Tuesday that she’s leaving the network for NBC News, where she will host a daytime talk show and a weekend newsmagazine, as well as contribute to breaking news coverage.

NBC News made the announcement Tuesday, ending months of speculation over whether she would re-up with Fox, where she has flourished while suffering bruised feelings in recent months, or start a new chapter in her career. Her contract with Fox expires this summer. Her last show on Fox will be Friday night.

Kelly’s departure deprives Fox News of its second-most-watched host, behind only Bill O’Reilly, and a hole at 8 p.m. in its prime-time lineup.

Rupert Murdoch, executive chairman of Fox, said that “we thank Megyn Kelly for her 12 years of contributions to Fox News. We hope she enjoys tremendous success in her career and wish her and her family all the best.”

Details about Kelly’s new jobs at NBC will be revealed in upcoming months, said Andrew Lack, chairman of the NBC Universal News Group.

“Megyn is an exceptional journalist and news anchor, who has had an extraordinary career” Lack said. “She’s demonstrated tremendous skill and poise, and we’re lucky to have her.”

Kelly wasn’t immediately available for comment about what made her choose to leave Fox. Scientists say changes found after pregnancy may help care for baby

NEW YORK – Pregnancy affects not only a woman’s body: It changes parts of her brain too, a new study says.

When researchers compared brain scans of women before and after pregnancy, they spotted some differences in 11 locations. They also found hints the alterations help women prepare for motherhood.

For example, they might help a mother understand the needs of her infant, Elseline Hoekzema, a study author at Leiden University in the Netherlands, explained via email.

The women also were given memory tests, and they showed no signs of decline.

Hoekzema, a neuroscientist, began working on the study while at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain. She and colleagues presented the results in a paper by the journal Nature Neuroscience.

The study includes data on 25 Spanish women scanned before and after their first pregnancies, along with 20 women who didn’t get pregnant during the study. The brain changes in the

pregnancy group emerged from comparisons of those two groups.

The results were consistent: A computer program could tell which women had gotten pregnant just by looking at results of the MRI scans.

And the changes, first documented an average of 10 weeks after giving birth, mostly still were present two years after childbirth. That’s based on follow-up with 11 study participants.

Further work showed they’re a motherhood thing: No brain changes were seen in first-time fathers.

Based on prior research findings, the researchers think the brain changes happened during pregnancy rather than after childbirth.

What’s going on? Hoekzema and colleagues think the differences result from sex hormones that flood the brain of a pregnant woman. In the 11 places, the MRI data indicate reductions in volume of the brain’s gray matter, but it’s not clear what that means.

For example, it could reflect loss of brain cells or a pruning of the places where brain cells communicate, called synapses.

Losing some synapses is not necessarily a bad thing. It happens during

a hormonal surge in adolescence, producing more specialized and efficient brain circuits. The researchers suspect that could be happening in the pregnant women.

Some study results hint such upgrades may prepare a woman for motherhood. One analysis linked brain changes to how strongly a woman felt emotionally attached to her infant.

And when women viewed pictures of their babies, several brain regions that reacted the most were ones that showed pregnancy-related change.

In addition, the affected brain areas overlapped with circuitry that’s involved in figuring out what another person is thinking and feeling. That’s a handy ability for a mother tending to an infant.

The idea of synapses being pruned in pregnancy makes a lot of sense, commented Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University in New York, who studies hormonal effects on the brain but didn’t participate in what he called a terrific study.

“The brain is being shaped all the time,” he said, and “sex hormones are part of the whole orchestra of processes that change the brain structurally.”

WASHINGTON – Most babies should start eating peanut-containing foods well before their first birthday, say guidelines released Thursday that aim to protect high-risk tots and other youngsters, too, from developing the dangerous food allergy.

The new guidelines from the National Institutes of Health mark a shift in dietary advice, based on landmark research that found early exposure dramatically lowers a baby’s chances of becoming allergic.

The recommendations spell out exactly how to introduce infants to peanut-based foods and when – for some, as early as 4 to 6 months of age – depending on whether they’re at high, moderate or low risk of developing one of the most troublesome food allergies.

Babies at high risk – because they have a severe form of the skin rash eczema or egg allergies – need a check-up before any peanut exposure, and might get their first taste in the doctor’s office. For other tots, most parents can start adding peanut-containing foods to the diet much like they already introduced oatmeal or mushed peas.

No, babies don’t get whole peanuts or a big glob of peanut butter – those are choking hazards. Instead, the guidelines include options like watered-down peanut butter or easy-togum peanut-flavored “puff” snacks.

Medela launches Sonata pump

Sonata, weighing about 2 pounds, is the company’s quietest breast pump, and it connects to the app MyMedela to track sessions and babies’ activities, as well as provide support and expert tips. It also uses Responsive Pump Technology, which uses sensors to detect changes in the mother’s body or her environment.

Everyone understands, and most agree, with this principle in theory.

But when our children encounter honest-to-goodness struggles, we are hard-wired to jump in and protect them. However, struggles are the way a child learns to be an adult eventually; this is how they grow.

Unfortunately, there usually are not benign, loving-but-firm, Mary Poppins sort of challenges that will help children grow in a comfortable way. The obstacles they need to develop into self-sufficient, functional adults are going to be uncomfortable.

So my baby-step this year will be applying this test before I respond.

One: Is there imminent physical danger? If so, intervene.

Two: Is there imminent and genuine long-term emotional danger (e.g. from being bullied)? If so, intervene.

Three: Will there be serious longterm consequences? If not, don’t intervene.

Four: Is it frustrating, unfair, unpleasant, irritating or otherwise a raw deal? If so, don’t intervene.

Five: Am I annoyed at the teacher, coach or other authority figure? If so, generally don’t intervene.

The long-term benefit to a child of grappling with a real problem almost always exceeds the short-term value of having the problem solved by the parent.

Recently, we’ve been hearing about the value of boredom for children. My baby-steps here are to impose strict limits on electronics, make sure we only do one extra-curricular activity a season and refuse to fix boredom.

• I will model respect and empathy. I am determined my children will not hear me speak ill of another human, even – especially – those with whom I disagree. To be honest, I have a long way to go. So, I’m going to take a few baby-steps. To begin, using proper titles: president, senator, governor, secretary, etc. I’ve found some oldschool formality helps keep my tone temperate and restrained. I am going to try to presume people I encounter are acting in good faith. And I am going to work to help my children understand different viewpoints on various issues and why someone may see something differently.

As a parent and a middle school teacher, I’ve been making resolutions to guide my efforts in the coming year.

Most of what I want to accomplish as a father comes down to parenting for the long-term, building skills and traits that will endure well after my day-to-day influence has faded. However, as with all resolutions, it’s easy to overpromise and under deliver.

I’ve found in the past having a few simple goals with associated steps can make all the difference.

So, here are my resolutions and baby-steps to get there.

28 Vitamin E’s benefits may be overrated Dear Doctor: I’ve been taking vitamin E for years because it’s an antioxidant and supposed to be good for me, but my doctor told me recently I shouldn’t be taking it. Is that correct?

Dear Reader: Just before I graduated medical school in 1997, I wrote a review about vitamin E. Due to its apparent antioxidant effect, it appeared to have great benefits not just for decreasing the risk of heart disease, but also for decreasing the risk of cancer.

I was convinced by two large observational studies that were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1993. These studies analyzed data from both men and women who had filled out a questionnaire about diet and supplements and who were then followed for a period of four to eight years. The results were promising. Those women who took vitamin E had 34 percent fewer heart attacks compared with those women who didn’t take vitamin E. Among men, those who took vitamin E had 37 percent fewer heart attacks than men who didn’t take a supplement.

I was convinced and ready to preach the benefits of vitamin E. But the biggest problem is a questionnaire is not a good assessment of daily vitamin E intake. Thus, studies were needed that looked at intake of vitamin E supplements versus placebo.

The 2005 Women’s Health Study followed almost 40,000 women over a 10-year period, giving one group of women 600 international units (IU) of vitamin E every other day and the other a placebo. Researchers found no difference in rates of heart attacks. Then there was the 2008 Physicians’ Health Study, which assessed the impact of 400 IU of vitamin E every other day – and, again, researchers found no difference in the rate of heart attacks.

Those looking at vitamin E and prostate cancer have found no benefit from supplementation. Although one study did find a decrease in prostate cancer in Finnish smokers who took 50 IU of vitamin E daily, further studies did not support this benefit.

A study in China found people with good dietary intake of vitamin E had a lower risk of developing lung cancer, but those who took vitamin E supplements had a higher risk of lung cancer. In addition, vitamin E supplements have been shown not to have benefit in reducing the risk of either colon cancer or the formation of colon polyps.

Some experts suspect vitamin E may even increase the rates of prostate and lung cancer, as well as increasing the virulence of melanoma.

As for the other reported benefits of vitamin E, such as its potential to decrease the risk of colds, cataracts or dementia, those benefits have not panned out.

Currently, the recommended daily amount of vitamin E daily is 15 milligrams.

You can get this from three ounces of almonds. Since vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, if you have problems absorbing fat, you might need more of it in your diet and should consider a supplement.

But a vitamin E supplement has no benefit for a healthy individual who has a normal intake of vitamin E through the diet.

My brother and sister-inlaw have been dressing my 2-year-old nephew, “Charlie,” in dresses and pink clothes.

They say these are what the boy has chosen.

To me, a toddler will pick out whatever gets his attention at the moment, and children that age have only a rudimentary understanding of gender.

It would be one thing if Charlie were old enough to understand and still insisted he felt more comfortable in girls’ clothing. But at his age I feel what they’re doing will only confuse him. Keep in mind, I do not believe this is a transgender issue. I think people who are transgender should dress and act the way they feel.

My parents (the boy’s grandparents) are worried and angry. My sister-in-law knows this upsets my mother and yet it’s as if she’s taunting her with texts and pictures of Charlie in pink and/or dresses. Are we overreacting? –

At the bridge table, success at the top level sometimes requires playing cards that generate incorrect thoughts in the minds of the opponents.

In this deal, the defenders were Brad Moss (East) and Joe Grue. East could not open with a weak twobid in diamonds. North’s one-heart response showed spades. His second-round jump to four hearts asked his partner to choose between four spades and four hearts.

West led the diamond six, third-highest from an even number or lowest from an odd number. The declarer ruffed in the dummy, played a spade to his ace and returned a spade to dummy’s king, relieved to see the 2-2 split. Now South had two chances: finding East with the club ace or playing hearts for only one loser.

In hearts, declarer could have won if East had honor-10-doubleton or 10-doubleton, or either opponent had king-queen-doubleton and South guessed correctly.

At trick four, declarer led a low heart from the board, and East sowed a misleading seed by playing his 10. West did his part by taking South’s jack with his king, then leading a second diamond.

Declarer ruffed in the dummy and tried a club to his king, but West won with his ace and played a third diamond.

Now South had to guess hearts.

It really looked as though East had started with queen-10-doubleton, so declarer cashed the heart ace and went down one.

Cubs are game for bowl at Wrigley CHICAGO – The Cubs would like to host a bowl game at Wrigley Field.

President of Business Operations Crane Kenney told the Chicago Tribune the team intends to start hosting a bowl game after the ongoing overhaul to the 103-year old ballpark is completed. They would need a few years to find title sponsors and align with conferences.

Wrigley Field was the longtime home of the Bears before they moved to Soldier Field. More recently, Northwestern met Illinois there in 2010.

akantecki@shawmedia.com JOHNSBURG – After scoring 30, 23 and 26 points in her previous three games, it was a matter of when and not if for Johnsburg’s Aannah Interrante.

The sharp-shooting junior entered Thursday’s Kishwaukee River Conference girls basketball game against Marengo needing five points to become one of six players in Johnsburg history with 1,000 points.

Interrante, a 5-foot-10 guard, continued her recent standout play and flew past the milestone, pouring in a gamehigh 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting for the Skyhawks in a 63-40 victory.

Even her AAU Illinois Elite travel coach, Tom Hohenadel, planned ahead and had a sign made in advance to capture the moment.

“It’s crazy,” Interrante said after taking pictures with coaches, family and teammates. “I’ve always wanted to do it my whole life. I remember watching (2011 graduate) Melissa Dixon do it, and thinking, ‘I want to do that someday.’ It’s kind of crazy to think that I actually did it.”

Interrante reached the 1,000-point milestone on her first of five 3-pointers with a little less than five minutes left in the first quarter. She really got going in the second quarter with three 3s and had nine points in the third before sitting out the fourth with the outcome in hand.

She sits at 1,020 career points and passed 2010 graduate Danielle Slivka (1,004 points) for fifth on the school’s scoring list. Dixon, who went on to a record-breaking career at Iowa, is Johnsburg’s all-time leader with 2,146 career points.

“When she gets this way, it’s automatic. She was unstoppable.”

Morgan Madsen added 12 points and 12 rebounds for Johnsburg, Megan Madsen (two 3s) and Kayla Stefka (seven rebounds, four blocks) had six points apiece, and Cortland Sommerfeldt finished with four points and five assists.

Marengo (6-9, 2-3 KRC) was led by Marissa Knobloch with 11 points. Erin Haeflinger added seven points and five rebounds, and both Hannah Ritter (two 3s) and Jordan Parker had six points.

Johnsburg leads the KRC halfway through the schedule and is the overwhelming favorite to win it.

“We just want to keep going with this momentum,” Interrante said. “We started to jell a little more, and I think you can probably see it when you watch us.”

“I’ve won every match I should have won, and only lost to good wrestlers,” Sabella said. “I’ve had a chance in some of them I lost, but I wrestled my hardest and didn’t come away with a win. I’ve beaten some good wrestlers, too, so I’m happy.”

Conrad thought the Eagles’ overall performance was lacking but singled out Sabella, 106-pounder Justin Peters and 182-pounder Ryan Dykes for having strong matches.

“We’re trying to find consistency where everyone wrestles really good throughout the whole night,” Conrad said.

Dykes pinned Calvin Pesina at 1:34 in the next-to-last match of the meet to move to 6-6 for the season.

“I wasn’t really expecting the headlock to come. I think I did a good job of rolling through it,” Dykes said. “I ended up getting a great opportunity for a cradle to pin him. I’m working to get better for regionals.”

jwilkinson@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The 120-pound match in Thursday’s Fox Valley Conference wrestling dual between Huntley and McHenry simmered and simmered.

McHenry’s Lucas Busse and Huntley’s Josh Stenger, both 2016 state qualifiers, seemed to be trying to solve on another through the early going, Busse happy to let Stenger go on the offensive.

“Just keep it on my feet because he’s good on bottom,” Busse said of the game plan. “He’s really spazzy and rolly, so I just wanted to keep on my feet and control the match.”

After a scoreless first period, Busse took a 3-1 lead into the third, when the intensity began to ratchet up.

Coming off two big tournaments in a short span over winter break, Huntley coach BJ Bertelsman said he thought some kids might have been a little worn down but wasn’t too concerned.

“You can rest after the season,” he said. “I’m not worried about it. We just have to get going.

You’ve got to bite the bullet and get after it.” to go ahead, 7-3. With 43 seconds left, Stenger came out of a tie-up and had to leave the mat to vomit. The Huntley senior returned reinvigorated and got a reversal with 12 seconds left to draw within 7-5, but Busse was able to

hold on for the win, pulling McHenry within five points through six bouts.

“Lucas has been close with him – every match he wrestles has been close,” McHenry coach Jake Guardalabene said. “We had a little bit of a better game plan, and he capitalized on it and wrestled about as perfect of a match as you can wrestle.”

Then things boiled over a bit.

After having his arm raised by the referee, Busse put his hands on his throat in a choke gesture toward the Huntley bench. “Some kids on their bench were talking trash, so that’s about it. Shut them up,” Busse said.

When Huntley coaches protested to the referee, McHenry had a team point deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Guardalabene said he didn’t see the gesture and during the next bout, still smarting from the penalty, kicked his chair and was charged with another unsportsmanlike conduct point.

After Busse’s win, the Red Raiders won the next six matches, and Huntley went on to win, 48-19, in a Fox Valley Conference dual. The Red Raiders won nine of 14 weights to improve to

12-6 overall and 5-0 in FVC duals.

Huntley’s Michael Jernigan opened the meet with a pin at 195, and Sammy Spencer received a forfeit at 106. Huntley’s Zach Spencer (126) won the first match after the BusseStenger bout with a first-period pin.

The Red Raiders got wins by decision from Joey Armijo (132) and Luke Loprieno (138), then pins from Tim Stowell (145), David Ferrante (152) and Juan Quiroz (160) to open a 48-11 lead.

“We got Quiroz and Ferrante back, so that’s going to solidify that middle,” Huntley coach BJ Bertelsman said. “We’ll be tough to beat.” Bertelsman called it a “not fully good night, like, 90 percent good” from his team.

McHenry closed the dual with wins from Jaden Glauser (170) by technical fall, and Jake Leske (182) by decision.

“I don’t think the score indicates how we wrestled,” Guardalabene said. “We wrestled pretty well, made some mistakes that they capitalized on, and that’s why the gap of that score was so big. Give our kids credit, man, their backs were against the wall from jump street, and they wrestled well.”

ALGONQUIN – Jacob Sabella felt there were times during his junior wrestling season when he came up short in matches he should have won.

The Jacobs senior 160-pounder has prevented that from happening this year, extending a personal trend of success that could leave anyone with envy.

Sabella played center defender for the Golden Eagles’ sectional champion soccer team, which finished one win from the Class 3A state semifinals. He scored 35 on his ACT and is ranked No. 1 in his senior class.

On Thursday, he beat Prairie Ridge’s Dean Reid by technical fall, 15-0, in the third period as the Eagles defeated the Wolves, 56-12, in their Fox Valley Confer-

ence wrestling dual meet. The win lifted Jacobs to 9-4 overall, 3-2 in the FVC, while Prairie Ridge fell to 2-7, 1-4.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” said Sabella, who improved to 22-5.

“I can’t complain. We were in the top eight in soccer, and I’m doing pretty well in wrestling, and the team’s doing well. Hopefully, I’ll Jacob Sabella have a chance at state, too.”

Eagles coach Gary Conrad calls Sabella, who is a captain on both varsity teams, a “one-in-a-million kid.”

“He’s having a great year,” Conrad said. “He’s just one of those kids you don’t run across very often as a coach. He has awesome academics, and he works really hard in the [wrestling] room. He’s a guy who doesn’t wrestle very much (in the offseason), too, but he works so hard in practice and makes up for it.”

Sabella will major in actuarial science, which deals with risks and probabilities for businesses to make decisions.

He has been accepted to Drake, Illinois and Iowa and is waiting to hear from

Inside Girls Basketball ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Morgan Clausen Huntley, sr., F Clausen averaged 14.8 points and eight rebounds a game for the Red Raiders in the prestigious Montini Christmas Tournament, where Huntley finished 2-2 after an 0-2 tournament start.

The 6-foot-1 forward had 13 points and six rebounds in a 36-31 win over Lake Zurich in the fifth-place consolation game. Against Marian Catholic, she poured in 23 points in a 40-33 victory.

Clausen outscored Dundee-Crown through three quarters Wednesday and finished with 18 points in a 35-27 Fox Valley Conference win. She filled up the stat sheet with 10 rebounds, four blocks and five steals, sending the Red Raiders above .500 for the first time this season.

NOTEWORTHY Who wants it? Unlike in previous years, the top spot in the FVC appears to be wide open this year, with six of the nine teams at .500 or better in conference play. C-G and Huntley have the early advantage with one conference loss, but it’s true that any team can beat any team on any day.

That was the case Wednesday, as Jacobs surprised McHenry and held the Warriors – who averaged 49.4 points a game (second most in the area to Johnsburg) – to a season-low 23 points.

“There’s just a lot of parity and you have to bring it each night,” said Huntley coach Steve Raethz, whose Raiders have won the past three FVC Valley titles. “It’s not a cliche. It’s really true. Every conference game we’ve played has been a real battle, and it’s going to continue to be that way.

“There’s a lot of conference season left, and you really have to take advantage of those opportunities where you protect your home floor, and really come ready to play in away games.”

Crystal Lake South has been close in each of the past two years in the FVC Valley but has fallen short of Huntley. At 3-3 in the FVC, the Gators are confident in their ability to compete with every team in the conference.

“Our conference is so kind of up in the air,” Gators coach Mark Mucha said. “There’s obviously a few favorites that don’t have many losses, but I feel anyone can beat anyone on any night.

“We’re looking to be competitive and hopefully shake some things up. We have 10 (FVC) games left, so there’s a lot of basketball to play, and a lot of things to prove still.”

The Sabres then kept the action away from Nilsson for much of the third. The Hawks finally broke through when Kane got a backhander to the net and Anisi-

mov knocked in the rebound for his team-best 18th goal with 2:04 remaining in regulation.

“He’s so skilled, and when he gets those chances in front, he’s not going to miss them too often,” Kane said. “He’s patient, he’s skilled and he knows where to put the puck.”

Buffalo also jumped in front in each of the first two periods, only to have the Hawks rally each time.

“There is a lot of disappointment giving up that game with the opportunity to win,” Sabres coach Dan Bylsma said.

Marcus Foligno intercepted a clearing attempt by Hawks defenseman Brent Seabrook in the first and beat Crawford on the glove side for his sixth of the season at 7:21. But Ryan Hartman responded for the Hawks, splitting Okposo and Sabres defenseman Taylor Fedun before sending a hard wrist shot over Nilsson’s glove at 16:20.

Kempny impresses teammates in return to ice

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Long, lung-searing morning skates weren’t what Michal Kempny had in mind when he decided to skate up his whole world and make the jump to a new league, a new country, and a new language. Kempny signed with the Blackhawks to play, not to watch from the press box.

But for an excruciating three-week span in December, Kempny could only sit and watch each night as a healthy scratch.

“It wasn’t easy,” Kempny said through an interpreter. “But you do have to think positive, stay positive. Every practice, for me, was like a game. I was trying to work out on the ice and in

the gym, waiting for the game to come.”

When Kempny finally got back in the lineup after being scratched for nine of 10 games, he didn’t waste his opportunity.

After a middling performance in Nashville last week, he had stel- Michal lar efforts at Carolina Kempny and St. Louis, scoring a goal in each game and showing off an improved defensive game.

Kempny lamented that both of his goals came in losses, but the big efforts weren’t lost on his teammates.

“Probably the most impressive part is when you’ve been sitting for more than two or three games, it’s tough to

come back and just play right away,” fellow defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said. “He’s been playing unbelievable since he came in, and scored two goals in two games – I haven’t done that in my career yet. He’s been playing real well. Good player.”

Of course, with the Hawks’ eightman defensive rotation, one man’s good news is another man’s bad news. And so Brian Campbell was scratched for the second time in four games Thursday night against his first NHL team, the Buffalo Sabres. Campbell’s streak of 423 straight regular-season games played was snapped in Nashville.

Campbell was on the ice for two Blues goals in St. Louis. Coach Joel Quenneville alluded to that when explaining the decision, but as he did

during Kempny’s extended absence, he said it’s more about having too many guys playing well, than not enough.

“You can say it’s a luxury over the course of 82 games,” Quenneville said.

“It’s nice knowing that we have that depth. [Campbell] was fine about it the other day, [but] obviously not happy either time. That’s where we’re at.”

Campbell said it’s been “different” than what he’s used to, after playing every single game in five seasons in Florida, but that he’s still “having fun.”

“Not a lot of teams carry [eight defensemen],” he said. “I guess when you’re in, you’ve got to be on, you’ve got to be good, and you’ll stay in. There’s not much leeway that way, so you’ve got to be good when you’re in. It creates good competition.”

CHICAGO – Patrick Kane stayed on the ice long enough to shoot the Blackhawks to a sorely needed victory.

Kane scored 56 seconds into overtime, Artem Anisimov had two goals and the Hawks beat the Buffalo Sabres, 4-3, Thursday night.

Jonathan Toews set up Kane’s 12th goal when he forced Anders Nilsson to make a left pad save. The rebound went right to the reigning NHL MVP, who knocked it into the open side of net before Nilsson could recover.

Coach Joel Quenneville was trying to get Kane off the ice before he scored the winning goal.

“The time I wanted him to come was the right time, and then he knew that, then it was a little too late, that he had to stay,” Quenneville said. “I give him credit. He knows the game.”

The Central Division-leading Hawks had dropped three in a row at home and five of six overall. Kane also had two assists against his hometown team, and Corey Crawford made 17 stops in the Hawks’ 10th consecutive victory against Buffalo.

“Nothing better than beating Buffalo, right?” a grinning Kane said as he addressed the crowd after the game.

Kyle Okposo had a goal and an assist for the Sabres, and Ryan O’Reilly had two assists in his return from an appendectomy. Jack Eichel also scored, and Nilsson finished with 39 stops.

Buffalo dropped to 3-9 in overtimes and shootouts.

“Too many overtime losses this year,” Eichel said. “It’s painful.”

Butler’s stardom reaches new level

“I’m just that humble kid from Tomball, Texas,’’ Butler said yet again late Wednesday night, as an ice pack was being wrapped up on his right shoulder.

The smile was ear to ear because he now knows he couldn’t be any further away from Tomball, Texas, these days.

Whether it’s hanging with actor Mark Wahlberg, Steelers receiver Antonio Brown or getting court-side hugs from former gal pal Shay Mitchell, Butler is no longer just Chicago’s blue-collar, late-first-round draft pick out of Marquette.

No, the secret has been out for a while. Butler has reached NBA stardom. He’s gone Hollywood. And he’s undoubtedly the best two-way player to wear a Bulls uniform since Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan were doing that dynasty thing in the 1990s.

And if Derrick Rose apologists want to speak up and point toward what a certain former No. 1 did for the Bulls, well, check the numbers. In Rose’s 2010-11 MVP season, the only statistical category he was better than what Butler’s been pulling off this year was assists.

Butler is scoring more than Rose did that year, rebounding more, shooting at a higher field-goal percentage, both overall and from 3-point range, and more importantly, still guarding the team’s best offensive player on most nights.

“Nope. I just consider myself a basketball player,’’ Butler said. “[Charlotte was] just another game.’’

The scary thing? At age 27 there’s still not a ceiling on what he’s capable of reaching. He just keeps getting better every season.

At one point Wednesday, Butler was asked whether he felt as if LeBron James respected him, especially with how many times the two have matched up over the years.

Blue Jackets’ streak snapped at 16 in Washington

WASHINGTON – Coach John Tortorella paced up and down the bench, trying to keep the Blue Jackets’ spirits high as they faced their first two-goal deficit since November.

The Jackets just didn’t have it Thursday night. Columbus lost a 5-0 clunker to the Washington Capitals, ending its winning streak at 16 games, one shy of the record set by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Blue Jackets’ fear-inducing, league-leading power play was blanked on five chances, and Columbus lost for the first time since Nov. 26.

Cowboys’ Gregory gets 1-year ban for substance abuse

FRISCO, Texas – Dallas defensive end Randy Gregory was suspended for at least a year Thursday for another violation of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

It’s the third time this season Gregory has been suspended. The first was a fourgame ban, followed by 10 games on top

of that. The latest suspension makes him ineligible for the playoffs, which start Jan. 15 for Dallas, the top seed in the NFC.

Walker enjoys the views and his game, takes lead at Kapalua

KAPALUA, Hawaii – With a chance to take the lead at Kapalua, Jimmy Walker missed in the one spot he was trying to avoid.

The way he was hitting his wedges Thursday, it really didn’t matter.

Walker hit a tough pitch to a tight pin on the elevated green to 3 feet for birdie on the par-5 15th, and he nearly holed a lob wedge from 78 yards on the final hole for an 8-under-par 65 that gave him a two-shot lead in the SBS Tournament of Champions.

He still is three days away from atoning for a playoff loss to Patrick Reed two years ago at Kapalua, but it was an ideal start for the PGA champion in ideal conditions on the west end of Maui, except for a short burst of showers.

Hoyer makes perfect sense as Bears’ ‘bridge’ QB Brian Hoyer never had broken a bone before. People told him that, if he ever did, he’d know it immediately.

When the Bears quarterback hit the Lambeau Field turf Oct. 20 and grabbed his left arm, he found out how right they were. He thought about the similarities after leaving the game: he also was playing on a Thursday night when he tore his ACL three years ago.

The Browns wore all brown uniforms that day; the Bears all navy against the Packers.

He knew, too, that a giant opportunity had ended too soon.

The Bears can fix that.

After listening to general manager Ryan Pace discuss his quarterback options Wednesday, Hoyer sounds like the odds-on favorite to be the Bears’ caretaker starter next season. He fits the GM’s requirement – a veteran presence who won’t turn the ball over.

Hoyer is more likely to return than Matt Barkley or Jay Cutler, although Cutler is the only one of the three under

contract next season.

The reason: if the Bears draft a quarterback, in the first round or otherwise, they likely will need to start a veteran to try to avoid another losing season – which could get the coaching staff fired.

“It’s a case-by-case basis,” Pace said. “If you get a young quarterback, is he ready to Brian Hoyer play right now? Maybe he isn’t. Maybe you need a ‘bridge’ quarterback to help out that transition.”

That parallel track seems the most likely path, unless the Bears decide they want to outbid other teams for the Patriots’ Jimmy Garoppolo.

The caretaker strategy isn’t the most exciting choice for Bears fans desperate for a jersey to buy, but it’s probably the most prudent. Hoyer is the best in-house candidate to be the one-year stopgap – and might be better-suited for

the role than any free agent, too.

Hoyer has mentored young players before, sharing a quarterbacks room with Browns rookie Johnny Manziel in 2014 and Texans second-year quarterback Tom Savage in 2015.

“This is what I said in Cleveland – the best way to show a young guy how to do it is to do it well and just do your job,” Hoyer said.

Pace said it’s “critical” for his next quarterback to have good decision-making skills. That, unequivocally, was Hoyer’s strength in his first year running the Bears’ offense.

In 200 pass attempts this season, Hoyer didn’t throw a single interception. Barkley threw 14 in 216 tries.

Barkley had a luxury that Hoyer did not, too – Jordan Howard averaged a half-yard more per carry in Barkley’s six starts than in Hoyer’s five.

“If you look at our turnover ratio this year, we’re bottom in the league,” Pace said. “Look at the bottom five teams – they’re all bad teams right now.

We’ve got to get out of that category. It starts with not throwing interceptions.”

Hoyer as a caretaker would give the Bears’ quarterback of the future – drafted somewhere in Rounds 1 through 3, preferably – time to develop.

Hoyer would grow, too. He’s started for three different teams in the past three seasons, and has played for five different franchises in six years.

“Ideally, you’d love to be in the same system two years in a row,” he said.

He values his relationship with offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains – whose job was declared safe this week – dating back to their time in Cleveland.

Were he to re-sign, Hoyer would be guaranteed of playing time.

At least for a while.

“I’d love to stay here,” Hoyer said.

“I think we have the building blocks in place.”
