Call or write – tell us how it is

There are some people who regularly call or write me to tell me what they think.

With few exceptions, they are people I appreciate, and not because they agree with me (often, they don’t). It’s because they are real people with a point of view, and by God, they’re going to tell me how it is whether I care to hear it or not.

That kind of honesty is worth a lot.

In the aftermath of Donald Trump’s upset victory in the presidential election, people talked a lot about the media being out of touch.

The popular theory is that media elites living on our coasts didn’t see Trump’s victory coming because they have lost touch with real Americans.

Of course the elites have lost touch. A better question to ask might be whether they ever were in touch with the rest of America. Elites are, by definition, in a class apart from the rest of us.

The people who call me, write me or buttonhole me in public help keep me from losing touch. As some of them occasionally remind me, I’m not so “elite.”

Recently I heard from longtime reader Gayla White. She wanted to share some of her thoughts about the holiday season with me.

I thought they were worth sharing with you.

holiday season, how much work it is preparing for celebrations and buying gifts, and it can be stressful. But the reason for it is love.

“If we didn’t love and appreciate our brothers-in-law and our nieces and nephews, our co-workers and crossing guards, then we wouldn’t go through all this.

“We do it, though, because we love each other. That’s also the underlying reason for the season: The gift of Christ, and his love for mankind, to the world.”

I was glad Gayla called to share this with me. It is a simple truth, one I might overlook if someone didn’t stop to point it out to me.

Happy holidays to all of you who call or write to tell us how it is – and those of you content to just spend a few minutes every day reading, too.

Huntley village officials have said they expect the Huntley Outlet Center to completely close at the start of 2017. Earlier in the year, the village filed an ordinance complaint regarding the property because it has been falling into disrepair since it was bought in April by Huntley Investment Partners LLC, which consists of California-based Craig Realty Group, Chicago’s Prime Group Inc. and Elgin’s Capital Realty and Development.

HUNTLEY SETS 2017 PRIORITIES After year of growth, village looks forward to finding use for outlet mall

hprokop@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Throughout 2016, Huntley has seen an increase in residents, the completion of improvements to the square and the addition of a new hospital – the project that stands out most for Village Manager Dave Johnson.

“In addition [to] what it brings from a medical standpoint, I think the economic development impacts are huge,” Johnson said of Centegra Hospital – Huntley, which opened in August.

In all, there was about $308 million

in private-sector investment within the past year in the village, Johnson said.

The hospital brought about 860 employees to the village, Johnson said, and other businesses, including Alden Health Care and Senior Living and technology company HIWIN Corp., brought in an additional 200-plus jobs combined.

Aside from job growth, Huntley saw growth in residents after a special census conducted in 2016 put its population at 26,632, making the village a home rule community.

“That’s a credit to the community

itself,” Johnson said of the population increase. “I think it’s a good place to either move to raise a family or retire to, and I think that all of the governmental agencies in the community do a good job.”

More than $5 million in overall improvements to Huntley’s downtown square were finished this year, Johnson said, and the village will continue to see what it can do to improve its downtown.

Although it’s been a positive year, Johnson said finding a new purpose for the Huntley Outlet Center is at the top of the village’s priority list looking

ahead to 2017.

The mall at Route 47 and Interstate 90 was bought in April by Huntley Investment Partners LLC, which consists of California-based Craig Realty Group, Chicago’s Prime Group Inc. and Elgin’s Capital Realty and Development.

jreiland@shawmedia.com Friends and loved ones are remembering a Marian Central Catholic High School graduate and Libertyville resident who was fatally shot last weekend.

Libertyville police officers were dispatched to the area of Milwaukee Avenue and Hollister Drive on Dec. 23 about 11:30 p.m. when they located an unresponsive man inside a dark-colored Volkswagen Jetta, said Chris Covelli, a Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman.

David E. Gorski, 30, was killed by a single gunshot that sent a bullet through his right arm and into his chest, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Authorities have said Gorski was allegedly shot

by Kenneth S. Seplak, 37, the night Gorski was going to attend a movie with a woman Seplak was likely stalking.

Seplak, of Round Lake Beach, has been charged with first-degree murder and is in Lake County custody in lieu of $3 million bond. Defense attorney Steven McCollum said in court Seplak is a “steady guy” with no criminal history.

Gorski, who was working at Medline Industries, grew up in Crystal Lake. He played baseball at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock and graduated in 2004.

Eric Knott, a longtime friend and teammate, said the two met in 2001 at Marian.

Gorski was Knott’s catcher and the two developed a close relationship that carried through their time at McHenry County College and after.

Knott described Gorski as an “excellent teammate with a great work ethic” who was quiet and reserved most of his high school career. It wasn’t until senior year when he came into his own and earned his spot as a leader of the team. Knott said he was struggling during a game, and Gorski came out to the mound to talk to him. Gorski chewed him out and from that point on really grew into a leadership role, he said.

Marian Central Catholic High School graduate and longtime friend and teammate of David Gorski told me to shut up and pitch. He had a smile on his face and I said, ‘Gor, if you’re gonna put me in my place, you can’t smile,’ ” Knott said, laughing.

After attending McHenry County College, Gorski went on to Northern Illinois University, although he never hesitated to return home and help a friend in need, Knott said. He said his younger brother, Ryan, had Tommy John surgery and Gorski caught for him and helped him through his rehabilitation. “[Gorski] was just more than willing to help out when he could,” Knott said. “He really didn’t want anything back. He just wanted to do things right.”

Hebron village president candidate accused of DUI, hitting pedestrian Mark Mogan is a Lake in the Hills police sergeant and Hebron trustee

hprokop@shawmedia.com A Lake in the Hills police sergeant and candidate for Hebron village president has been accused of driving while intoxicated and striking a pedestrian.

Mark Mogan, 49, of Hebron was arrested by Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, police Tuesday on the charge of injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle, Lake in the Hills Police Public Information Officer Amanda Schmitt said.

About 5:20 p.m Tuesday, Mogan allegedly struck a 27-yearold Lake Geneva woman who was crossing the road at Edwards Boulevard and State Highway 120 in Lake Geneva, according to a report from Lakegenevanews.net.

The woman was transported in critical condition to Froedtert

Hospital in Wauwatosa, the report stated.

Mogan was taken to Walworth County Jail, Schmitt said, and had a bond hearing Wednesday. He was placed on administrative leave with the Lake in the Hills Police Department on Wednesday, pending an investigation into the incident, Schmitt said.

Mogan has been with the Lake in the Hills Police Department for about 23 years, Schmitt said, and became a sergeant in 2004.

He also serves as a Hebron trustee, and filed to run for Hebron village president in the April 4 consolidated election against John Jacobson, who is facing drug and gun charges after his most recent arrest.

LOCAL BRIEF Crystal Lake light and Christmas tree recycling underway

CRYSTAL LAKE – Residents wanting to recycle their real Christmas trees and old Christmas lights have a window during which to do it.

Residents should place real Christmas trees on the curbside by 7 a.m. through Jan. 6 to be collected for composting. Questions should be directed to MDC Environmental Services at 815-568-7274.

The city is partnering with Elgin Recycling to recycle Christmas lights.

The program, which lasts through Feb. 24, accepts all string lighting and extension cords, but does not accept garlands, wreaths or other nonrecyclables.

Drop-off bins are located in the lobby at City Hall, 100 W. Woodstock St., which is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, except for holidays. Call the city at 815-459-2020 for more information.

Citizens Utility Board offers guide to help state residents cut TV costs DAILY CHRONICLE The Citizens Utility Board has released its first-ever guide to help TV viewers cut costs.

The guide comes in response to public opinion polls that show Illinois consumers want lower cable and satellite TV bills.

“It’s obvious Illinois consumers are hungry for changes in the pay-TV industry, but reforms usually don’t come quickly,” CUB Executive Director David Kolata said. “CUB’s guide focuses on what consumers can do today to help reduce their bills.”

CUB’s Guide to Cutting Your TV Costs includes tips on how consumers can reduce TV bills and details the pros and cons of various market choices. Illinois consumers can visit www. cubcablecenter.com to receive a free copy of the guide.

CUB, a nonprofit utility watchdog created by Illinois Legislature, examined whether public polling supported

consumer comments about cable service it had heard for decades. In the fall, the consumer group conducted a series of Google Consumer Surveys from randomly selected Illinoisans ages 25 and older. Each question was asked independently and had at least 1,000 respondents among people surfing the internet to read online content.

The margin of error is no more than 3.1 percent.

One of the surveys revealed that 75 percent of respondents with a pay-TV service said their bills were too expensive. Another survey found that 76.6 percent of customers who have “cut the cord” said they left their previous cable/satellite company also because of high bills. Illinois consumers also said they strongly support a series of reforms in the industry that would amount to a “Cable Customer’s Bill of Rights.”

High school teammate and friend Steven Letzter said he’s known Gorski for most of his life. After high school, the two played at McHenry County College together for one year and, 11 years later, they both ended up working at Medline Industries. Letzter said he and Gorski would get together every month for lunch to catch up on sports and their lives.

“Dave was Dave. He loved sports, kept to himself, worked hard, and that was about it,” Letzter said. “He was a real simple guy.”

Nicholas Shane, who knew Gorski through softball leagues at Lippold Park, said his friend and teammate was one of the most talented players out there but he remained humble and soft-spoken on and off the field.

“He was a gentle giant of sorts, and The Associated Press contributed I know our family of teams will continue on honoring him in our play,” to this article.

CRYSTAL LAKE – Crystal Lake police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred Wednesday night at GameStop.

At about 9 p.m., two suspects entered the store, 1125 S. Route 31, and displayed handguns, according to a news release from the Crystal Lake Police Department.

The suspects demanded money from employees, police said, and fled the scene with an undetermined amount of cash and two electronic game consoles, police said. They were last seen running south from the scene, police said.

Witnesses described the suspects as a 5-foot, 11-inch tall man with average

build and a 5-foot, 6-inch tall woman with a large build, police said. The man and woman were described as wearing black ski masks and dark-colored clothing and gloves, police said.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information can call Crystal Lake police at 815-356-3620 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 800-762-7867. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to the arrest of any individual, the release said.

With two runners on base, Gorski hit a shot to left-center field that left the park for a three-run home run. Marian won 3-1 and advanced to the state quarterfinal.

“I’ve told that story numerous times to other men I’ve coached,” Wikierak said. “He was a quality person who was well liked by his teammates and by the coaching staff. It’s one of those student-athletes that you welcome having a young man like that in the program.

“I believe that the retail aspect of what’s going on there probably won’t be anything close to what it was during its heyday,” Johnson said. “I think it’s a byproduct of what’s happening with all brick and mortar retail stores.”

Johnson said the village would like to see a strong mixed use in the property, which could mean a business parktype use, and some retail aspects, too.

Other priorities for 2017 include capital improvement projects that account for about 21 percent of the $27.6 million budget that was approved earlier this month, according to village documents.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois will ring in the new year with a familiar tune: Deadlock in the Capitol and no state budget.

The only spending agreement reached in two years between bickering Republicans and Democrats, a sixmonth temporary fix, expires Sunday.

Not only is there no arrangement to fill the void, Gov. Bruce Rauner and his Democratic opponents controlling the General Assembly have hardly talked about it.

Funding for elementary and secondary education was provided through June. But colleges and universities will see state spending dry up. And even though billions of dollars for Medicaid health care is assured, the backlog of bills is so great that hospitals are having an increasingly tougher time staying ahead.

State workers will continue to be paid, but there’s no money to pay utility bills or buy commodities; vendors continue to wait for payment. Those needing mental health, addiction treatment or senior-living programs likely will wait, too. The private agencies that provide those services continue to wait months for checks to arrive.

The two sides have met just a handful of times since last fall, and Democrats criticized Rauner for canceling a scheduled conference Dec. 12. He wanted a spending plan from Democrats, but as Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said Thursday, “We need to hear from the people who are actually going to

spend the money on how they want to spend it and how much they want to spend.”

Madigan, the steel-willed Chicagoan, said Rauner’s ideas shouldn’t be tied to a budget deal.

The Legislature returns to Springfield on Jan. 9 for two final days of the current session before a new General Assembly is sworn in.

John Patterson, spokesman for Senate President John Cullerton, said the Chicago Democrat was surprised by the governor’s nixing the last meeting but hopes they’ll sit down again soon.

“Businesses that work and provide services on behalf of the state deserve to be paid,” Patterson said. “We need to be investing in higher education and preserving our safety net. These are all vital to Illinois being the competitive and compassionate state.”

She was born March 9, 1926 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Clarence and Vera (Boren) Bobay. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1943. On February 14, 1947 she married Verlin Roberts in Auburn, Indiana. She and her husband moved to Crystal Lake in 1965 where they raised their five children. Laurine was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Crystal Lake.

Imposing at 6-foot-2, he was always smartly dressed. His children bought him blue jeans one Christmas “as a joke,” his son said, adding: “He took them back and exchanged them for khakis.”

Hulseman also invented the Traveler coffee cup lid, with his friend and employee Jack Clements, a design the Museum of Modern Art added to its permanent collection.

He worked nearly 60 years with Solo Cup Co., the food-service packaging company that his father, Leo, started in a suburban Chicago garage in 1936.

The company made disposable food and drink containers from paper, plastic and recycled materials.

Dart Container Corp. bought the company in 2012, but it still makes the party cups and Traveler lids.

While the large red version claimed the limelight, Solo party cups come in many sizes and several colors.

“Truth be told,” his son said, “Dad liked blue the best.”

CHICAGO – Robert Hulseman, who in the 1970s invented the Red Solo Cup for family picnics only to see it embraced as the go-to beverage holder at college keg parties and football tailgates – and even the inspiration for a country music party hit – has died. He was 84.

The former president and chief executive of his family’s Solo Cup Co. died Dec. 21 at his home in Northfield of health complications after a series of strokes, his son Paul Hulseman told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The younger Hulseman said his father never fully understood how massively popular the large red plastic cup became in pop culture. He said the cup was intended for families, and recalled being about 10 years old when he and his siblings helped their father choose the cup’s first colors: red, blue, yellow and peach.

“That product was never intended for keggers,” Paul Hulseman said.

Country music star Toby Keith recorded a tribute to the party side of Hulseman’s invention in the 2011 hit “Red Solo Cup,” with lyrics extolling the plastic cup as “the best receptacle for barbecues, tailgates, fairs and festivals.”

The next line’s rhyme, referencing the male anatomy, embarrassed Paul Hulseman when he played the song for his mannerly parents.

“I don’t think I should have been sitting next to my mom,” he said. “My mom just said, ‘Well, that was nice.’ ” The elder Hulseman was known for his generosity and devotion to the Catholic Church. He didn’t give to large, well-endowed institutions but favored smaller, even struggling charities. “If ever a place was in trouble, he would come through and help them out,” his son said.

Cook board passed two new measures in October The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – At least one Cook County municipality has opted out of the looming minimum wage hike and paid sick time laws, and more communities could follow suit.

The Cook County Board passed two laws in October mirroring measures in Chicago. One allows employees to accrue up to five days of paid sick time each year, with some exceptions. The other incrementally increases the minimum wage to $13 an hour by 2020.

CHICAGO – Deliberating jurors at a major racketeering trial of the purported leaders of Chicago’s notorious Hobos gang sent a note to the presiding federal judge Thursday saying they are deadlocked on at least one count after four full days of deliberations.

The primary charge in the 10-count indictment is the racketeering conspiracy charge that applies to all six alleges Hobos leaders including purported boss Gregory “Bowlegs” Chester and hitman Paris Poe. Nine other stand-alone counts include drug and gun charges.

At the biggest gang trial in recent Chicago history, prosecutors told jurors the Hobos cultivated a reputation for brutality, once torturing someone with a clothing iron. Some witnesses were visibly nervous testifying and one refused outright to testify “for the sake of me and my family.”

The afternoon note Thursday doesn’t say which count the 12 panelists are stuck on, but it makes clear there is disagreement. And it at least raises the prospect that there could be a hung jury after three months of often chilling testimony and sometimes complex legal arguments.

Thursday’s note was the clearest sign of jurors’ struggles to reach unanimity.

But there were some earlier hints of trouble. One juror, referred to only as Juror No. 49, sent a note to the judge at the end of the first day of deliberations, asking if he could be dismissed from the jury.

“For me to sit here for a week or more ... is a waste of my time,” he told Tharp in court later. After the juror said he thought he could still fairly judge the evidence, Tharp told him he was keeping him on the jury.

Prosecutors don’t oppose delaying Schock’s trial

SPRINGFIELD – Federal prosecutors said they don’t oppose delaying the criminal trial of former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock because they expect it to last as long as six weeks and include up to 100 witnesses.

A preliminary trial date of Feb. 7 was set when Schock was arraigned this month, but the ex-conAaron gressman has requested Schock a delay until July. The 35-year-old Republican from Peoria is accused of misusing government and campaign money for personal use and faces 24 criminal counts.

His lawyers argued more time is needed to study “voluminous” documents that could be used as evidence.

The U.S. attorney’s office for the Central District of Illinois filed its response Wednesday, saying it doesn’t object to a delay. Schock said he’s innocent and that any questionable spending resulted from “honest mistakes.”

Robbers target FedEx delivery trucks in Chicago

CHICAGO – One FedEx truck was stolen in Chicago and the driver of another truck robbed of packages in separate incidents.

Fines for ignoring railroad crossing gates double Jan. 1

CHICAGO – Metra officials are reminding motorists that fines for driving over railroad tracks while crossing gates are down will double Jan. 1.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a law in July that increased the penalty for disregarding activated gates and warning lights from $250 to $500 the first time. It doubles to $1,000 each time after that.

Officials at suburban Chicago’s commuter rail service said Illinois ranked second in the nation in 2015 for highway-rail fatalities. Operation Lifesaver reports up to 80 percent of train/car collisions occur at crossings with warning devices operating.

Republican state Sen. Karen McConnaughay of St. Charles and Crystal Lake GOP Rep. Mike Tryon sponsored the measure. They believe the risk of steeper fines will make motorists think twice before trying to race a train.

U.S. punishes Russia for hacking campaign The ASSOCIATED PRESS HONOLULU – The U.S. struck back Thursday at Russia for hacking the U.S. presidential campaign with a sweeping set of punishments targeting Russia’s spy agencies and diplomats. The U.S. said Russia must bear costs for its actions, but Moscow called the Obama administration “losers” and threatened retaliation.

A month after an election the U.S. says Russia tried to sway for Donald Trump, President Barack Obama sanctioned the GRU and FSB, leading Russian intelligence agencies the U.S. said were involved. Those sanctions could easily be pulled back by Trump, who has insisted that Obama and Democrats are merely attempting to delegitimize his election.

In an elaborately coordinated response by at least five federal agencies, the Obama administration also sought to expose Russia’s cyber tactics with a detailed technical report and hinted it might still launch a covert counterattack.

“All Americans should be alarmed by Russia’s actions,” Obama said, adding, “Such activities have consequences.”

Trump issued a statement saying it was “time for our country to move on to bigger and better things.” Yet in the face of newly public evidence, he suggested he was keeping an open mind.

“In the interest of our country and its great people, I will meet with leaders of the intelligence community next week in order to be updated on the facts of this situation,” Trump said.

As part of the punishment, the U.S. also kicked out 35 Russian diplomats who the U.S. said were actually intelligence operatives, and shut down a pair of Russian compounds, in New York and

Maryland. The U.S. said those actions were in response to Russia’s harassment of U.S. diplomats, calling it part of a pattern of aggression that included the cyberattacks on the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman.

It was the strongest action the Obama administration has taken to date to retaliate for a cyberattack, and more comprehensive than last year’s sanctions on North Korea after it hacked Sony Pictures Entertainment. The new penalties add to existing U.S. sanctions over Russia’s actions in Ukraine, which have impaired Russia’s economy but had limited effect on President Vladimir Putin’s behavior.

Russia, which denied the hacking allegations, called the penalties a clumsy yet aggressive attempt to “harm Russian-American ties.”

Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would take into account the fact that Trump will soon replace Obama as it drafts retaliatory measures.

The day marked a low

point for U.S. relations with Russia, which have suffered during Obama’s years as he and Putin tussled over Ukraine, Edward Snowden and Russia’s support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Maria Zakharova, a Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman, took to Facebook to call the Obama administration “a group of foreign policy losers, angry and ignorant.”

It was unlikely the new sanctions, while symbolically significant, would have a major effect on Russian spy operations. The sanctions freeze any U.S. assets and block Americans from doing business with them. But Russian law bars the spy agencies from having assets in the U.S., and any activities they undertake would likely be covert and hard to identify.

“On its face, this is more than a slap on the wrists, but hardly an appropriate response to an unprecedented attack on our electoral system,” said Stewart Baker, a cybersecurity lawyer and former National Security Agency and Homeland Security Agency official.

With Trump’s victory, GOP hopes to overhaul Medicaid

ATLANTA – When President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January, Republicans will have the opportunity to pull off something they have wanted to do for years – overhaul Medicaid, the program that provides health care to tens of millions of lower-income and disabled Americans.

Any changes to the $500 billion-plus program hold enormous consequences not only for recipients but also for the states, which share in the cost.

Trump initially said during the presidential campaign that he would not cut Medicaid, but later expressed support for an idea pushed for years by Republicans in Congress – sending a fixed amount of money each year to the states in the form of block grants. Backers say such a change in the Medicaid formula is one of the best ways to rein in spend-

ing, but critics say big cuts would follow.

Currently, the federal government pays an agreed-upon percentage of each state’s Medicaid costs, no matter how much they rise in any given year.

Republicans have argued that states have little incentive to keep expenses under control, because no state pays more than half the total cost. Both House Speaker Paul Ryan and Trump’s pick for secretary of health and human services, Georgia Rep. Tom Price, want to switch to block grants.

Key questions facing Republicans will be how the funding is structured and how much flexibility will be given to the states.

“It’s exciting because you know it’s not going to be the same as it was, and it’s nerve-wracking because you know it’s not going to be the same as it was,” said Terry England, a Republican state lawmaker who chairs the House budget committee in Georgia.

Republican control of Congress and the presidency means the GOP can act on its long-held priorities of reining in entitlement programs and repealing President Barack Obama’s health care law, which allowed states to expand the number of people eligible for Medicaid.

Thirty-one states have opted for the expansion.

It is not clear what the GOP’s replacement plan will look like. Democrats have warned of dire consequences, and any proposed changes are likely to trigger a fight in Congress.

Last week, the Democratic Governors Association warned that repealing the Affordable Care Act would end health coverage for millions of people and shift the financial burden onto the states, costing them $68.5 billion in uncompensated care over the next decade. The group said the Medicaid expansion alone has provided coverage for millions of Americans who lacked

insurance and that it had been a critical tool for states in combating the opioid epidemic.

In 2012, a plan by Ryan to reduce the federal deficit included a proposal to convert Medicaid funding into block grants with a cap on the amount the federal government would provide. Advocacy groups warned that that approach would ultimately lead to fewer people receiving coverage.

The Congressional Budget Office concluded that under Ryan’s proposal, “states would need to increase their spending on these programs, make considerable cutbacks in them, or both.”

Earlier this year, Ryan and Republican leaders offered another, more flexible option: States would receive a fixed amount from Washington for each person enrolled. That approach would allow federal payments to grow if, for example, a recession forced more people onto Medicaid.

The number of police killed in the line of duty rose sharply in 2016, driven by shootings of police around the country, most notably ambushes in Dallas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

From Jan. 1 through Wednesday, 135 officers lost their lives. Some died in traffic accidents, but nearly half were shot to death.

That’s a 56 percent increase in shooting deaths over the previous year. Of the 64 who were fatally shot, 21 were killed in ambush attacks often fueled by anger over police use of force involving minorities.

“We’ve never seen a year in my memory when we’ve had an increase of this magnitude in officer shooting deaths,” said Craig Floyd, president and chief executive of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. “These officers were killed simply because of the uniform they wear and the job they do. This is unacceptable to the humane society that we are.”

In Dallas, a sniper attacked July 7 at the end of what had been a peaceful rally against police brutality. He killed five law enforcement officers and wounded nine others – the largest death toll among law enforcement from a single event since the 9/11 attacks, which killed 72 officers. Months later, Dallas businesses and residents still display blue ribbons and banners declaring, “We support our Dallas police officers.”

But even amid community support,

Baton Rouge police Cpl. Lester Mitchell was partners with Matthew Gerald, one of the three slain officers, and was among the officers who raced to the scene of the shooting that also killed sheriff’s deputy Brad Garafola and officer Montrell Jackson. Mitchell has daily reminders of the deadly shootout, driving past the scene on his way to police headquarters.

“Just passing there, you can’t help but replay it over and over again,” he said.

Mitchell said the shooting has made him more alert and aware of potential dangers on patrol, sometimes in situations that wouldn’t have alarmed him before, such as a hand in a pocket. “You learn to cope with it, because if you don’t, you can drive yourself crazy,” he said.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund’s Floyd said the impact of this year has been profound on law enforcement. Agencies are struggling to recruit officers to their ranks and those who continue to serve “talk about how their head is now on a swivel.”

“They’re always looking over their shoulder, always worrying about the next attack that could come at any time from any direction,” Floyd said.

That was underscored by the slaying in November of a San Antonio detective who was fatally shot and killed outside police headquarters as he was writing a traffic ticket. The man accused of shooting him said he was angry about a child-custody battle and simply “lashed out at somebody who didn’t deserve it.”

Be careful driving in 2017 “Hey, let’s be careful out there.”

The late Michael Conrad, portraying Sgt. Phil Esterhaus in the 1980s NBC police drama “Hill Street Blues,” made that phrase a national watchword.

As 2017 dawns, motorists in our region should take those words to heart, because driving a vehicle in Illinois has become more dangerous.

For the first time since 2008, more than 1,000 fatalities were recorded on Illinois roadways in 2016. The count stood at 1,055 as of Wednesday, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The state’s fatality rate has risen this year by 7.3 percent.

Why are traffic fatalities increasing statewide?

IDOT points to several reasons.

1. Gas prices are low, and people are driving more.

Illinoisans drove 630 million more miles last year than the average previous 4 years; this year, they’ve driven 1.7 percent more miles than in 2015.

2. Not enough people wear seat belts. Nearly half of all fatalities involve someone who didn’t buckle up.

3. Too many people drink and drive. Nearly 25 percent of all fatalities last year involved an impaired driver.

4. Distracted driving can cause crashes – more than 6,000 of them from 2009 to 2013, because the driver was using a cellphone at the time.

It’s worth noting that unlicensed drivers have been involved in 151 fatal crashes this year, and that 215 fatalities occurred where the victim didn’t use a restraint or used it improperly.

The increase in traffic fatalities comes after a remarkable period of improved highway safety in Illinois. In 2009, fatalities fell to 911 – the first time they were below 1,000 since 1921. Fatalities stayed in the 900-plus range over a seven-year period through last year, thanks to several factors: tougher laws on intoxicated and distracted driving, greater focus on teen driving safety, and greater enforcement of existing laws regarding speeding and seat belts.

The state’s slow recovery from the Great Recession of 2007 to ’09 likely also was a factor in suppressing motorist miles driven during some of that period.

But with fatalities rising from 924 in 2014, to 998 in 2015, to 1,055 as of Wednesday, Illinois drivers should sit up and take notice.

Making the highways safer isn’t rocket science. Whether they’re going to the store, driving to work, or heading out on the tollway or interstate, drivers should resolve to follow traffic officials’ advice: • Always buckle your seat belt.

• Don’t drink and drive.

• Don’t text and drive.

• Don’t use a cell phone at all while driving.

• Don’t speed.

• Obey all other traffic laws.

• Drive defensively.

If we’re all a little more careful out there, we can make 2017 a safer and happier new year.

Saving Medicare payment reform The quest to create a more rational health care system took a dispiriting turn this month, when the federal government abandoned an effort to motivate doctors to use the best available drugs, rather than the costliest ones. What’s worrisome is that this could be the start of a more general retreat from payment reform in health care as the White House changes hands.

The effort in question was to change the fee that Medicare now pays doctors for administering drugs in their offices, a fee that amounts to 6 percent of the drug’s cost. Under this system, the pricier the medicine, the greater a doctor’s financial incentive to use it.

Given that drug spending

by Medicare has been rising by 10 percent annually, and now tops $100 billion a year, this reimbursement policy is indefensible. Indeed, it illustrates why the U.S. spends 18 percent of its economic output on health care – more than any other country.

Yet in March, when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services proposed shrinking the fee, doctors and pharmaceutical companies pushed back. Last week, CMS capitulated.

The broader cause of payment reform is in jeopardy, too, partly because the present administration has moved slowly on it. When Barack Obama exits the White House, dozens of pilot projects for new payment systems will be left unfinished, and only a handful of those reforms have become mandatory. A bigger concern: Congressman Tom Price, Donald Trump’s pick to be health secretary, has already demanded that CMS scale back the initiatives.

The reforms CMS has pursued include such promising strategies as paying hospitals a single fee for a hip replacement and other procedures, paying doctors a fixed fee per patient, along with a bonus for improving care, and asking doctors

and hospitals to coordinate the care they give in order to avoid providing unnecessary services. If Medicare could save money through such reforms, private insurers could follow suit.

Republicans, meanwhile, want to replace Medicare altogether with a voucher system that would help older people buy insurance on the individual market. Presumably, competing insurers could then figure out for themselves how to cut costs. But the companies could save money as easily by simply covering fewer services and shunning sicker patients as by giving doctors incentives to work more efficiently.

The Obama administration’s unfinished payment-reform efforts are a far better way to lower costs – for Medicare and for health care generally. They’re yet another important aspect of Obamacare that President-elect Trump should preserve.

I was devastated by the news of Carrie Fisher’s passing. Fisher was so many things: a writer, an actor, a script doctor, an author and one of the funniest women out there. She spoke frankly about her struggle with drugs and mental illness, letting people know it was OK to have flaws. She laughed at her own struggles, tweeting in 2011, “If my life wasn’t funny it would just be true and that is unacceptable.”

Part of what she laughed at was the fame she earned playing Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” films. It was not all she was, but the role she played changed everything for me, and for millions of little girls around the world.

Back in the 1970s, girls didn’t have a lot of strong role models in mainstream entertainment. The women we saw in films and on TV were waiting to be rescued or draped artistically over the hero. They were decoration, or prizes to be won. We read books and fairy tales where the only accomplishment of the lead female was to be lovely enough to catch someone’s eye.

Even the smart ones were smart only until they found a man.

Little girls in the 1970s were lucky enough to find something different in Princess Leia. I was almost 4 when the film came out, and I saw it in the theater in 1977.

“Star Wars” did something new with their lead. Leia wasn’t just a princess to be won; Leia was a fighter in the Rebellion against the evil Empire. She stood up to Darth Vader despite seeing her entire planet blown to bits in front of her – she barely even flinched when it happened. Leia survived Vader’s torture, and when Luke Skywalker and Han Solo came to rescue her, she took over and saved all of their skins. She ran the Rebel outpost on Hoth and, after trying to save Han, she strangled her captor, Jabba the Hutt, with her own slave chains.

She later became a general in the fight for freedom. If you read any of the new canon books about her, you know just how vital she was to the Rebellion for her entire life.

You cannot imagine what a revelation that was for me and for girls everywhere. Many of us were sick of waiting for our prince to come or of

When I was a girl on the playground, I wasn’t sitting on top of the monkey bars waiting to be rescued, or standing by politely with my hands folded like a good little princess. I took up my stick/blaster and fought the Stormtroopers and Darth Vader.

When I saw something that was wrong, I did something about it. And why not? Leia didn’t back down from anyone. She didn’t always succeed, but she always tried, despite all the odds.

Being in love was great, but it wasn’t the only thing in her life. She risked her life to save the galaxy. Her friends mattered. Her cause mattered. She was certainly a better shot than those Stormtroopers.

Once I saw Leia, I was never going to sit quietly again. Leia inspired me to hold my head high and tell the world

when something was wrong with the way women are portrayed.

Because of Leia, I fight for equality.

Because of Leia, I started my site, Legion of Leia, to tell the world that women love geek culture. I did it to shine a light on the things that were wrong in the world and to celebrate them when they’re right.

I’m hardly alone. So many women of my generation can point to a picture of themselves dressed as Princess Leia as a kid. If you walk around any comic book convention, you see dozens of little girls with those iconic cinnamon-roll buns in their hair. It stirs my heart every time I see it.

Carrie Fisher wasn’t just Leia, of course. Her career encompassed so many parts of the entertainment industry. Her contribution to erasing the stigma around mental illness was enormous. Her humor kept us laughing with her through her struggles and her triumphs. She was a role model as Leia, but she was one as Carrie as well: Her positive attitude and raw honesty

were a guiding example to me in my own career.

Leia was (almost) the only woman in a group of men, and Fisher was one of the few female stars in the sci-fi world; that was something I could relate to, being one of the only women covering geekdom early on. She seemed to be able to find the ridiculous in the diciest of situations. If she could laugh at herself through it all, so could I. Her ability to do so much – write books, act, pen advice columns and more – encouraged me to keep taking on different projects until I found what I wanted to do.

Leia was brave. So was Carrie.

Rest in peace, general. May the Force be with you.

BUSINESS As 19 states up minimum wage, millions to benefit

ALBANY, N.Y. – It will be a happy new year indeed for millions of the lowest-paid U.S. workers. Nineteen states, including New York and California, will ring in the year with an increase in the minimum wage.

Massachusetts and Washington state will have the highest new minimum wages in the country, at $11 an hour.

California will raise its wage to $10.50 for businesses with 26 or more employees. New York state is taking a regional approach, with the wage rising to $11 in New York City, $10 in its downstate suburbs and $9.70 elsewhere.

“This $1.50 increase, I cannot even comprehend or tell you how important this will be,” said Alvin Major, a New York City fast-food worker. The 51-year-old father of four helped lead the fight for the increase in his state, one of several successful efforts by fastfood workers and other low-wage workers around the country. “The price of food has gone up. Rent has gone up. Everything has gone up. ... This will make a difference for so many people.”

Voters in Arizona, Maine, Colorado and Washington approved increases in this year’s election. Seven other states, Alaska, Florida, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio and South Dakota, are automatically raising the wage based on indexing. The other states see-

ing increases are Arkansas, Connecticut, Hawaii, Michigan and Vermont.

In Arizona, the state Chamber of Commerce and Industry filed a lawsuit challenging the increase, which will raise the minimum wage from $8.05 to $10. On Thursday, the Arizona Supreme Court refused to temporarily block the raise.

Workers and labor advocates argue that the increases will help low-wage workers now barely making ends meet and boost the economy by giving some consumers more money to spend. But many business owners opposed the higher wages, saying they would lead to higher prices and greater automation.

Some restaurant owners may consider reducing portion sizes or charging for side dishes that were once included in the price of a meal to absorb the increase, said Melissa Fleischut, president of the New York State Restaurant Association.

“I’m sure prices will go up where they can, but restaurants want to avoid sticker shock,” she said. “They’re going to have to get creative.”

The adjustments in Oregon, New York, California and several other states are part of a series of gradual increases to a $12 or $15 hourly wage.

The minimum wage also will go up this weekend in 22 cities and counties, including San Diego, San Jose and Seattle.

LOS ANGELES – Pink and her motocross-champ husband got a bundle of joy for the holidays.

The Grammy winner announced on Instagram that her second child with her husband, Carey Hart, was born Dec. 26.

Pink posted a photo of herself cradling her newborn son, Jameson Moon Hart.

Another photo shows Hart with the infant in his arms. Pink captioned that one: “I love my baby daddy.”

A spokeswoman for Pink confirmed the news Thursday.

Pink and Hart, who married in 2006, also have a 5-yearold daughter, Willow.

32 Risks abound for kids using marijuana Dear Doctor: Marijuana seems to be increasingly accepted in our country. But I worry about my kids using it. Is it addictive?

Dear Reader: You’re right to be worried – and not only because marijuana can indeed be addictive.

Marijuana has gained greater acceptance in this country, not in small part because its medical use can stimulate appetite and control nausea and pain. One potential problem with this degree of acceptance is how adolescents view the drug.

In 2015, 70 percent of high school seniors viewed marijuana as not harmful, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s (NIDA) Monitoring the Future survey; in 1990, only 20 percent felt this way. Interestingly enough, the 2015 survey also found 70 percent of 12th-graders disapprove of the regular use of marijuana.

Perhaps the biggest risk with marijuana is how it affects the adolescent brain. The endocannabinoid system, a vast system of receptors within the brain, spinal cord and smaller nerves, affects multiple brain and body functions. This system continues to develop in humans until the age of 21 or so.

If used frequently in adolescence, marijuana can rewire many of these nerve pathways.

These changes aren’t seen as much in the adult brain and, if they surface, can be easily reversed by stopping use. In adolescents, however, this rewiring of the nervous system may create addiction.

According to the NIDA, only 9 percent of people who try marijuana become addicted. However, this number increases to 16 percent among those who start using marijuana in adolescence. It increases further if marijuana is used daily in adolescence.

In fact, 17 percent of admissions to publicly funded substance abuse programs are related to marijuana.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley much more addictive substance and can cause withdrawal symptoms that are life threatening. That is true. However, just because one substance has particularly bad effects doesn’t mean another one is safe.

There are problems with each.

Marijuana not only causes short-term memory loss, it also affects mental abilities for days after its use. That means a person’s ability to plan, organize, solve problems and make decisions is impaired, which has significant ramifications for adolescents trying to retain information learned in school or trying to maintain good study habits.

Further, for those predisposed to schizophrenia, marijuana can induce psychosis and, in younger users, can decrease the age of schizophrenia’s onset. People with a familial predisposition to schizophrenia certainly should avoid use.

However, marijuana has not been associated with depression or bipolar disorder, and while those with generalized anxiety are more likely to use marijuana, that connection may be linked more to a need to compensate than to causal effect.

I would advise high school students not to use alcohol or marijuana, but your child, like many others, may be exposed to these and other drugs in high school. As a parent, be sure to watch for signs of abuse or consistent use, and to note any psychological issues that could lead to frequent marijuana use.

husband and I are in our 30s.

We do well for ourselves and generally are happy. We both have siblings who have various problems – drug abuse, emotional issues, broken relationships. Our parents travel to support them during their various dramas, but visit my husband and me only if they need a place to stay and don’t want to pay for a hotel.

My parents have cited fear of flying as a reason they don’t visit us much, and my husband’s parents claim they don’t have the money. However, their travel itineraries to visit our siblings suggest otherwise.

I haven’t asked my husband’s parents about this, but I did ask mine. My mother said because we’re “on a good path,” they don’t need to see us as often or put as much effort into us.

I was shocked. How do we deal with knowing we’re less favored because we have our act together? – The Good Kids Dear Good Kids: You are not the only people with this problem. The same thing tends to happen in families in which there is a child with special needs. The parents expend their energy where they think it is needed most, which often results in hurt and resentment on the part of the stronger siblings.

Freshman guard Cassidy Randl made the first two of four consecutive 3-pointers by D-C, and fellow freshman Payton Schmidt hit the last two as the Chargers turned around a seven-point deficit over the final two minutes.

In the third quarter, whatever momentum the Chargers gathered leading up to the half had completely vanished.

D-C went cold from the field and St. Charles North pounded the inside to run away for a 58-43 win in the consolation bracket championship at the D-C Charger-Komaromy Girls Basketball Classic.

The host Chargers (8-9) finished 2-2 for the second straight year, earning 10th place in the 16-team tournament.

St. Charles North (7-5) received a consolation championship plaque for the win.

“We did great in the first half, and then we went away from everything we said we had to do in the second half,” Chargers coach Sarah Miller said.

“We talked about shutting down the post. We talked about not getting front-cut and jumping to the pass, and they front-cut us continuously. I really think it was a matter of not executing the game plan.”

The North Stars had three individuals score in double figures, including 6-foot-1 forward Anna Davern (17 points) and 6-0 center Elizabeth Olsem (16). Olsem had eight points in the third as St. Charles North outscored D-C, 214, and took a 45-31 lead into the fourth.

Jazmyn Harmon added 10 points and 10 rebounds for St. Charles North, which outrebounded the Chargers, 33-22, and shot 52.3 percent (23 of 44) from the field.

For D-C, Paige Gieseke led the way with nine points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Randl finished with eight points, Katelyn Skibinski had seven points and two assists, and Schmidt and Allison Michalski (five rebounds) had six points apiece.

“At halftime, we talked about stepping up in the post and not letting the post score anymore,” said Randl, who made both of her 3-point attempts. “I think that was a big part of us breaking

After losing the first game of the tournament, the Chargers rebounded to win two of the final three. Although it lost the consolation championship, D-C showed some spurts of brilliance that it hopes will carry over into the second half of the Fox Valley Conference schedule.

Dumoulin went 6 of 10 from the field and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line in a 40-38 win over Burlington Central. She hit 7 of 14 shots to go with 10 rebounds and six assists in a 54-50 overtime win over Fenwick.

The 5-foot-9 senior had a team-leading 12 points in a 48-26 loss to Maine West in the semifinals. On the season, Dumoulin is averaging 14.5 points a game.

But however you look at the tripping penalty called on Nashville’s Craig Smith midway through the third period Thursday night, it was the clear turning point in the Blackhawks’ come-from-behind 3-2 victory at Bridgestone Arena.

Trailing 2-1 in the third period after Mike Fisher’s power-play goal, Crawford drew a penalty – and the Bridgestone Arena fans’ ire – when he appeared to craftily stick out his left leg as Smith came across the crease, drawing contact and a tripping penalty. On the ensuing power play, Jonathan Toews deflected a Brent Seabrook shot past Pekka Rinne to tie the score at 2. Less than four minutes after that, Patrick Kane registered the 700th point of his

career with the game-winning goal, and the Hawks stopped their losing streak at three games.

“I was moving forward, I was pretty close to the goal line, too,” Crawford said. “I just got hit the one before, too. Just trying to brace myself and it didn’t really work too well.”

Toews and Kane both said they hadn’t seen the play, but certainly noticed the fans’ reaction to the replay. Coach Joel Quenneville, obviously, had no problem at all with the play or the call.

“It was his turf,” Quenneville said.

“And he’s doing what he has to do.”

The win allowed the Hawks to stay in first place in the Central Division, a point ahead of the streaking Minnesota Wild, who won their 12th straight game Thursday night. It also prevented the Hawks’ losing streak from getting out hand. A loss would have been their third straight against a bottom-tier Central Division team.

“It’s nice for us to get that one and kind of nip things in the bud, as far as our little skid right now,” said Toews, who has two goals in three games after scoring four in his first 26.

The teams traded goals 35 seconds apart in the first, with Artem Anisimov scoring on a power play and Filip Forsberg answering at the other end. After a quiet second period, Fisher snuck behind Duncan Keith and knocked in a nice crossice pass from Mathias Ekholm for a power-play goal and a 2-1 Nashville lead at 6:13 of the third period. Then Crawford appeared to do his best Dave Bolland impression, and the comeback was on.

“Our starts need to be better,” Quenneville said. “We got going as the game progressed. But I think that’s been our M.O. for most of the games this year. We get better as the games progress. Tonight, [we needed] to find a way to win.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Five games into the season, Brian Campbell was on the verge of being a healthy scratch in Columbus, potentially ending his iron-man streak. He spent two straight practices outside of the top six, and appeared destined for the press box.

Instead, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville pulled a swerve at the last minute, and dressed seven defensemen against the Blue Jackets, including Campbell.

But Campbell wasn’t able to talk his way back into the lineup this time.

Campbell was a healthy scratch Thursday night, ending his streak of 423 Brian consecutive regular-sea- Campbell son games played. He last missed a game in March 2011, also with the Hawks and also under Quenneville.

Gustav Forsling also was a scratch, as Michal Kempny and Michal Rozsival returned to the lineup after spending most of the month watching.

“We have eight ‘D,’ making some tough decisions along the way,” Quenneville said.

“Our last game, the defense wasn’t great.

With eight defensemen, we always have tough decisions, and we have to sit out two at a time. The guys who were out (Kempny and Rozsival) were probably out a little too long. He’s part of a group that, with 82 games, might not be able to play them all.”

The 37-year-old Campbell has three goals and seven assists in 37 games. He had been playing on the second pairing with Brent Seabrook, but found himself on the third pairing once Quenneville shuffled the blue line midway through Tuesday’s loss to the Winnipeg Jets.

“He started all right, then he played very well, [but the] stretch recently wasn’t as good,” Quenneville said.

Roster report: Andrew Desjardins was a healthy scratch for the first time since Nov. 29. Marian Hossa (upper body) missed his third straight game and isn’t expected to play Friday against Carolina, either. Nashville’s star defenseman P.K. Subban – who entered the final week of fan voting for the Central Division captaincy at the All-Star game ahead of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews – missed his sixth straight game with an upper-body injury.

Meredith looks like a keeper Second-year WR appears to be a building block

who suffered a season-ending fractured left fibula in Week 4 against the Lions. But Meredith has made enough of the opportunity that he now looks like a building block. In 11 games since White was injured, Meredith has 56 receptions for 775 yards and four touchdowns. Only 12 players in the NFL have more receiving yards in that span – and none of them has had three quarterbacks throwing to them as Meredith has with Brian Hoyer, Jay Cutler and Matt Barkley.

“Where Cam has made the biggest jump is he’s become very consistent,” Loggains said.

“He’s become reliable, and the quarterbacks trust him.”

Hoyer and Barkley, in particular, have leaned on Meredith.

In four full games with Hoyer, Meredith was targeted 35 times, with 26 receptions for 295 yards.

In five full games with Barkley, Meredith has been targeted 46 times, with 29 receptions for 397 yards and two touchdowns.

Cutler never really had the chance to develop that rapport in training camp and the preseason, and it showed in the regu-

lar season. In three games with Cutler, Meredith was targeted eight times, with six receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown – including a Hail Mary that Meredith caught against the Buccaneers for a 50-yard touchdown.

Barkley in particular has developed a chemistry with Meredith, with 18 receptions for 239 yards in the past two games.

“He plays hard,” Barkley said. “I think his reaction in the way he always wants to keep moving after the catch is impressive. He’s grown in a lot of ways in regards to finding open windows and feeling the defense – not just running his route as it says on paper.”

Meredith’s ability to use that “feel” to his advantage is a learned trait.

“Everything goes back to experience and reps,” he said.

“I can’t say it enough because once you start to get a feel for the game, you do start to feel windows getting in and out of breaks. If you put in the time and you start seeing it in the film room, you start getting a knack for it. I think I have.”

Rookie RB Howard surprised league, team

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – It’s hard to blame anyone for not predicting that a fifth-round pick buried on the depth chart would be on the brink of the Bears’ single-season rushing record.

Dowell Loggains didn’t see it coming, but once Howard got healthy and his opportunities in games, the talent was apparent.

“I’m going to be real honest when I say this: I didn’t see the greatness in Jordan in OTAs and training camp,” the Bears’ offensive coordinator said Thursday. “Part of it was because he was hurt. Part of it is because he’s a much better player when the shoulder pads are on and it’s live, because he’s a big back. He’s hard to tackle.

“You’ve got to give a lot of credit to our evaluation process, to the guys upstairs – (general

manager) Ryan (Pace) and (director of player personnel) Josh Lucas and those guys – because they found a guy in the fifth round that’s a really good football player. He’s a much better player on Sunday than he is during the week just because his running style is Jordan Howard different. Sometimes it’s hard to see that.”

Loggains referenced the preseason finale as the first glimpse, when Howard had 107 yards on 16 carries. Coach John Fox mentioned the injury, too, as a reason it took Howard some time, and the general acclimation to the NFL. It was in Dallas when Howard first got his chance after Jeremy Langford hurt his ankle.

“I remember the Dallas game he had a big run early down the right sideline where I went, ‘You know, this guy has more speed and juice than you think he does for a big back,’ ” Loggains said. “Just hadn’t had an opportunity to see it, and I’m really glad and we’re fortunate that we did. He made the most of his opportunities.”

Howard is used to being known more for his play in games than practice because of his running style.

“I’ve definitely heard that a lot of times in my career because practice is not as physical as the game,” he said. “So I can’t really show one of my strengths off in practice. I definitely feel like I perform better in games.”

Howard needs 61 rushing yards Sunday to break Matt Forte’s record for rushing yards by a Bears rookie. Howard has rushed for 77 yards or more in

eight consecutive games.

“Once he got healthy, got ready and he got his opportunity, there’s probably not too many guys who have had better seasons than him at the running back position,” Fox said.

Banged-up OLBs: Pernell McPhee (shoulder), Leonard Floyd (concussion) and Willie Young (knee) missed practice Thursday for the second day in a row, putting the defense in a predicament not just because of the pass-rush prowess the trio brings, but also because of the lack of bodies at the position.

Fox said Sam Acho, Christian Jones and Josh Shirley – who is on the practice squad – have been getting the work in practice.

Receiver Alshon Jeffery (illness), running back Bralon Addison (illness) and safety Deon Bush (ankle) also did not practice Thursday.

As recently as the first month of this season, Cam Meredith was just another unheralded receiver with potential – he wasn’t even active in the first two games of the season.

“You see the mistakes young players make and you don’t know,” Bears offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said.

“They teeter, they flash. Cam showed enough last year – you’re intrigued by it. But is he going to take the next step? Is he going to turn the corner? Is he going to become a consistent player and not a flash in the pan?”

If a 13-game sample is any indication, Meredith has answered all three questions in the affirmative. The 6-foot-3, 207-pound second-year pro from Illinois State and St. Joseph High School

in Westchester – an undrafted free agent in 2015 – leads the Bears with 62 receptions for 827 yards (13.3 avg.) and four touchdowns. He is coming off backto-back 100-yard games – nine receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown against the Redskins last week; nine receptions for 104 yards against the Packers in Week 15.

“I’m definitely pleased,” said Meredith, Cam Meredith a quarterback in his first two seasons at Illinois State before converting to receiver as a junior. “Under the circumstances, when you get a shot like that, you have to take advantage of it – that’s mostly what was on my mind.

“I feel like I put in the work. I was ready. I just hadn’t had the experience. Once things started to get rolling, I was becoming a better player and making plays out there.”

The hope for the Bulls coming out of Thursday’s practice was that veteran Dwyane Wade can stop having headaches.

The expectations for Jimmy Butler moving forward? That the two-time All-Star can keep causing them.

At least as far as the opposition was concerned.

This is Bulls basketball these days.

A two-man show with a surrounding cast of characters who need to step up with more consistency from game to game.

The two players who can’t afford to have off-nights in most cases?

That’s where Butler and Wade fit in.

“He’s got a heck of a responsibility, every night, guarding the other team’s best player on the perimeter,” coach Fred Hoiberg said of Butler, as both Wade and Butler were major topics of conversation. “It takes a lot out of you.

He plays a lot of minutes and carries the load for us on the offensive end a lot of nights, as well. Two-way players are rare in this league, and we’re very fortunate to have one of the best ones in our game.”

Butler made that case yet again Wednesday, suffering a sprained right ankle in the fourth quarter, but still managing to tie a season high with 40 points, including the game-winner at the horn.

Hoiberg, however, knows that 40-point nights are a rarity in the NBA, and that’s where Wade comes in.

The 34-year-old was sidelined most of the second half, battling migraines for the second time in the past week.

During that win over the Nets, Wade was not only dealing with the pain caused by the headaches, but was having vision problems.

Both players seemed good to go for Friday afternoon’s game in Indiana.

“As of right now, [he’s cleared to play],” Hoiberg said of Wade. “[Migraines are] something he has dealt with his whole career.

“That was the first time we had to pull him out of a game because of it.

And, obviously, he’s a key member of our team down the stretch and we missed him.”

Not only was Wade expected to play against the Pacers, but Hoiberg was counting on having him for both games of the back-to-back Friday and Saturday.

Porzingis’ blocks charity up to $43,000 for NY hoop program NEW YORK (AP) – Knicks star Kristaps Porzingis’ campaign to raise money through his blocked shots has generated $43,000 thus far for a New York-area youth basketball organization.

Porzingis pledged to donate $500 to the RENS for each block, and New York real estate developer Keith Rubenstein, the founder of Somerset Partners and a longtime Knicks season-ticket holder, announced he was matching Porzingis’ contribution for $1,000 a block.

Monitoring Wade and his minutes has been quite the undertaking for the Bulls this season, as they know he still can cause some serious damage in the league, but only if upright and healthy. The goal coming in was keeping him at that 28- to 30-minutes-agame mark, and through the 28 games he’s played in, he was sitting at 30.5 minutes a game.

The process has remained the same, as well. It’s about keeping an

open line of communication with the veteran guard, and also a lot less practice time as of late. Whether that hurts the team’s rhythm or not, that’s just the reality, especially if Hoiberg wants Wade on the floor for heavy minutes in the fourth quarters of games, as he was Monday against the Pacers.

“He felt great, and we were able to run our offense through him pretty much exclusively all throughout that fourth quarter,” Hoiberg said of Wade and the thought behind his fourth-quarter usage. “He’s pretty good about letting you know, ‘Hey, give me a couple minutes here or a couple minutes there.’ Or if he feels great, he talks about keeping him in the game. A lot of that is just communication throughout the course of the 48 minutes.”

And if the Bulls wants to keep playoff hopes alive and well, communication that has to continue all season long.

Hunter waived: The Bulls waived guard R.J. Hunter, who signed with the Bulls on Oct. 27. He appeared in three games and played a total of nine minutes. The Bulls’ roster stands at 14 players with the move Thursday.

Michigan is 1-1. The higher-ranked team in the AP Top 25 has won the past six Orange Bowls, the most recent exception there being No. 10 Iowa’s 24-14 win over No. 9 Georgia Tech on Jan. 5, 2010.

BELK BOWL No. 18 Virginia Tech 35, Arkansas 24: At Charlotte, North Carolina, Jerod Evans threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two scores, and Virginia Tech pulled off the largest comeback in its 124-year history, erasing a 24-point halftime deficit to beat Arkansas.

After being limited to 180 yards in the first half, the Hokies (10-4) took advantage of three of Austin Allen’s interceptions and scored touchdowns on five of their first seven possessions of the second half.

Virginia Tech came in averaging 35 points, but the Razorbacks (7-6) set the tone early by turning Evans’ fumble and interception into 10 points to take a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. Arkansas extended the lead to 24-0 at halftime, and it looked as if it might cruise to an easy victory.

BIRMINGHAM BOWL No. 25 South Florida 46, South Carolina 39 (OT): At Birmingham, Alabama, Quinton Flowers ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more to lead South Florida past South Carolina (6-7) in overtime.

South Florida (11-2) squandered a 39-21 lead in the second half, but recovered for its school-record 11th victory. Flowers threw a 25-yard touchdown pass on the first play of overtime, finding Elkanah Dillon in the end zone.

South Carolina’s overtime drive ended after Jake Bentley was sacked by Mike Love on fourth down. Bentley fumbled and Khalid McGee recovered to end the game.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh finds oranges refreshing and has consumed at least two this week. And Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher used to break his bedtime as a kid to stay up late and watch bowl games.

On Thursday, those were their big revelations.

On Friday, neither coach will seem so relaxed.

Although not the game either team wanted to be in when this season began, the Orange Bowl is no consolation prize for No. 6 Michigan and No. 10 Florida State. The Wolverines (10-2) and Seminoles (9-3) square off Friday night, Michigan aiming for perhaps a top-five ranking to end the season and Florida State looking to avoid the first three-game bowl losing streak in school history.

“Winning the Orange Bowl championship is our goal now,” Harbaugh said. “That’s a lot, in our minds. We want to win the most awards. We want to get the best grades. We want to excel at sports, and we have that opportunity to win a trophy.”

When Florida State got off to a rocky 3-2 start and quickly fell out of the national championship picture, Fisher kept getting asked what was left to play for this season.

The answer now is obvious.

It’s not the College Football Playoff – but the Orange Bowl still is a pretty big deal.

“Just because you lose a game here and there ... things can be achieved,” Fisher said.

Both schools are big brands in college football, but this game also seems as though it could have classic something-has-to-give elements.

Florida State has the top-ranked red-zone offense in the country, while Michigan’s defense is No. 2 in that category. The Seminoles’ Dalvin Cook gets 6 yards a carry; the Wolverines allow about 3 yards a carry. FSU averages 35 points a game; Michigan allowed 38 points – total – in October and did not give up more than 30 in any game this season.

ALAMO BOWL No. 13 Oklahoma St. 38, No. 11 Colorado 8: At San Antonio, Mason Rudolph passed for 314 yards and three touchdowns, and Oklahoma State’s defense smothered Colorado in an Alamo Bowl victory Thursday night that gave the Cowboys their fifth 10-win season in seven years.

James Washington caught nine passes for 171 yards and a touchdown before leaving in the third quarter with an apparent hand injury. Rudolph and Washington already have announced they will return for their senior seasons, putting the Cowboys (10-3) among the favorites to win the Big 12.

Sefo Liufau passed for 195 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Buffaloes (10-4), but was sidelined for part of the second and third quarters after limping off after a sack.

The Leathernecks (4-8, 1-0) made 18of-=37 3-point attempts led by C.J. Duff who made 7 of 9 from distance and finished with 21 points.

Western Illinois took the lead for good at 79-76 on Mike Miklusak’s 3 with 5:04 left and held on despite leading by no more than five the rest of the way.
