Hydroelectric engineers find potential in old mine

By MARY ESCH The Associated Press MINEVILLE, N.Y. – Some look at an abandoned, centuries-old iron mine in New York’s Adirondacks and see a relic.

An ambitious group of engineers sees the shafts in Mineville as a new way to provide a steady flow of electricity in a growing market for renewable energy.

They are pitching a plan to circulate some of the millions of gallons of groundwater that have flooded the mine shafts over the years to power an array of 100 hydroelectric turbines a halfmile underground.

They envision the operation as a solution for solar and wind power producers, who need ways to ensure an uninterrupted flow of energy when the sun isn’t shining and winds are still.

“Today, everyone’s recognizing that a critical part of our energy infrastructure is going to be storage,” said Jim Besha, head of Albany Engineering Corp., as he gave officials a tour of the mine site about 100 miles north of Albany.

“You can think of it as a bank. If someone has excess solar energy, they would pay a fee to store it overnight.”

While logistically complex, the plan is at the same time incredibly simple: Engineers would drain roughly half of the water from the shafts and pump the remainder into an upper chamber. The water would then be released into a lower chamber, powering turbines and creating electricity. The turbines would be reversed to pump the water back up to repeat the process.

Technically, the pumped water is considered stored energy, to be released strategically when power is needed.

The Mineville Pumped Storage Project still faces federal approvals and up to three years of construction, but it could become one of the first projects of its kind in the nation.

It also would mark a 21st century re-use of a mine that famously contributed iron for the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War on nearby Lake Champlain and was mined for the last time in 1971.

For the locals, the pumped storage project would breathe new life into a depressed former mining town, doubling the local tax base, generating hundreds of construction jobs and a dozen permanent ones, and providing extras like a new highway garage and water lines, said Tom Scozzafava, supervisor of the surrounding town of Moriah.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a community that has never fully recovered from the closing of the mine,” Scozzafava said. “And environmentally, it’s very clean. It’s all underground and utilizes the same water source continuously. You can’t find a cleaner way to produce and store power than pumped storage.”

Besha first envisioned his plans in 1990 after Scozzafava came to him looking for a way to make the defunct mine profitable again. The project languished until 2005 as interest in renewable energy projects grew.

“Now it looks like it could be online just when it’s needed,” Besha said, noting Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s call for 50 percent of the state’s electricity to come from renewable sources like wind and solar by 2030.

The project is basically an underground version of big outdoor projects that rely on the same principle. The New York Power Authority’s Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Project in the Catskills and the proposed Eagle Mountain project in southern California, for example, use outdoor, hilltop lakes as the upper reservoirs.

The large-scale pumped storage projects, which have been used for decades to meet peak demand for electricity produced by fossil fuel and nuclear plants, represent 97 percent of the nation’s energy storage today.

By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Families from across McHenry County gathered Sunday to celebrate Jewish traditions with a community Hanukkah celebration.

The McHenry County Jewish Congregation, at 8617 Ridgefield Road in Crystal Lake, hosts the party annually to give congregation members and the public a chance to partake in the holiday’s traditions such as playing games, lighting candles and singing, as well as eating a community meal with traditional Hanukkah foods such as latkes, or potato pancakes.

The center is the only service synagogue in McHenry County and draws people from outside the county, including from towns as far as Des Plaines and Lake Zurich, said Ellen Morton, executive director of the congregation.

“We have a new rabbi this year, so there has been a higher interest,” she said. “It’s increasingly tricky – not just in Judaism, but for all religious institutions – to get people to affiliate. We see a lot of interfaith families, so making this a priority is a challenge.”

Congregation membership is about 85 families, and about 50 showed up Sunday. While Hanukkah traditionally has been a minor holiday on the Jewish calendar, its importance in modern Jewish faith is rising, Rabbi Tom Samuels said.

CRYSTAL LAKE – A slew of McHenry County schools canceled classes Monday because of the winter weather, according to the Emergency Closing Center.

All District 200 schools in Woodstock as well as St. Mary Catholic School were set to be closed. Johnsburg School District 12 and St. John the Baptist Catholic School also will be closed.

Huntley schools, McHenry schools, Harvard School District 50, Richmond-Burton High School District 157 and Nippersink School District 2 all will be closed, according to the Emergency Closing Center.

In Algonquin, Mackeben Elementary School, Conley Elementary and Heineman Middle School were scheduled to be closed. In Lake in the Hills, Marlowe Middle School and Martin and Chesak schools also were canceled.

Alden-Hebron School District 19 will not have class, but other Hebron schools will start two hours late, according to the district’s website.

Wind chills were expected to drop to 30 below zero Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Extreme temperatures are expected through Tuesday, according to the service.

McHenry County Board to convene Monday, vote on changes Tuesday If you go

By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The McHenry County Board will review proposed committee assignments and rule changes Monday in a Committee of the Whole meeting that could become a regular feature.

Board members will meet at 11 a.m. to discuss both items as well as review other things that will be voted on at its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening. Among the many changes that will go before a vote will be to go from two monthly meetings to one, preceded by a Committee of the Whole to facilitate discussion.

Rule changes to be voted on Tuesday were recommended by an ad-hoc rules committee convened by new County Board Chairman Jack Franks, D-Marengo, who was sworn in earlier this month.

The Committee on Committees, which convenes once after each November election, subsequently developed a roster assigning the board’s 24 members to the proposed committee structure, plus chairpeople for each.

Both the rule changes and the committee structure will not take effect un-

less the board votes Tuesday to approve them.

If approved, the County Board would hold a single voting meeting at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month, ending the practice of two meetings on the first and third Tuesdays.

This lone voting meeting would be preceded by a 9 a.m. Committee of the Whole the previous Thursday, giving board members the weekend to digest the issues and for county staff to get questions answered.

The recommended changes are the most significant overhaul of county government since it went from three representative districts to six after the 1990 U.S. Census.

Both the Committee of the Whole and the full board meeting will take place at the county Administration Building, 667 Ware Road, Woodstock.

2-car crash sends 7 people to hospitals

A 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada was traveling north on Route 14 about 6:30 p.m. when the driver lost control and the rear of the SUV slid into the southbound lane, where it was struck by a red 2014 Dodge Caravan traveling south, McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Aimee Knop said.

Of the seven people injured, three were taken to Mercy Harvard Hospital, three were taken to Mercy Walworth Hospital and Medical Center, and one was taken to Centegra Hospital – Huntley.

A juvenile passenger in the Oldsmobile had critical injuries.

A condition update was unavailable Sunday.

Route 14 between Oak Grove Road and Crowley Road was closed for about an hour and a half while crews worked to clear the scene.

Fire departments from Harvard, Hebron, Woodstock and Marengo responded, and Harvard police assisted with traffic control.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate.

Knop said bad weather is thought to be a factor in the crash, and citations are pending.

Knop said the sheriff’s office had multiple calls Saturday and throughout the night for cars in ditches and minor property damage crashes as a result of snow and ice making roads hazardous.

There isn’t an enormous Jewish community in McHenry County, which makes involvement with the synagogue important, said Andy Purvin, who also is on the board of directors at the congregation.

“We come to services here. We participate in everything here,” he said. “We want that for our kids. It’s more important to immerse them in it because they don’t get a lot in everyday life otherwise.”

One of 10-year-old Miles Purvin’s favorite Hanukkah traditions is the food and candle-lighting, he said.

He said that he liked that his family was involved with the synagogue because he likes to learn about the religion.

“It gives me a chance to study different stuff,” he said. “I think it’s a cool religion because I have friends who aren’t Jewish, so I can learn from both.”

Hunter Purvin, 10, agreed that the food was one of his favorite parts of the annual party. He added that his family also incorporates different traditions at home during the holiday.

“On the last day of Hanukkah, we get a really big present,” Hunter said.

‘Every other day it’s a small one. I like that we have a party before Hanukkah starts.”

WOODSTOCK – Beginning snowmobilers will have an opportunity to learn the principles of safe snowmobile operation at an Illinois Department of Natural Resources education course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 7 and Feb. 19 at the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, 2200 N. Seminary Ave., Woodstock.

Under Illinois law, the course is required for those ages 12 to 16 who plan to operate a snowmobile. The course also is required for those older than 16 who do not have a valid driver’s license.

A Snowmobile Safety Education Certificate will be issued by the Department of Natural Resources upon successful completion of the course.

The eight-hour course includes instruction in safe operation, rules of the road, snowmobile law, first aid, proper riding techniques and more.

The course is free of charge.

CRYSTAL LAKE – Four Community High School District 155 students and a teacher were selected to be part of the 2017 All-State musical “Sweeney Todd.”

The All-State cast, crew and pit orchestra consist of top student performers, musicians and technicians from across Illinois.

More than 375 students from 73 high schools auditioned for this year’s production. There were 109 selected for the final production company.

The forum will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at McHenry County College. It features people and resources available in the area to help individuals in need through breakout sessions, panel discussions and workshops.

Topics for the event include homelessness, veterans services, suicide prevention, Alzheimer’s disease, resources for young adults, financial planning, “too much month at the end of your money” help, therapy animals, human trafficking, children and families in crisis, heroin in McHenry County, rape culture and cyber safety.

No previous tax experience is necessary but good computer skills are required.

Those who volunteer receive IRS training and materials, and attend three to four classes in January at the Algonquin Township office in Crystal Lake.

Volunteers must satisfactorily complete a required test to become IRS-certified tax preparers.

They also must be able to commit to a minimum of four to five hours a week during the tax season, February through April.

Library to install more solar panels

McHENRY – The McHenry Public Library is planning to add its second 10-kilowatt solar panel structure to the library’s roof in April.

The McHenry Public Library Board of Trustees discussed the solar project at its Tuesday meeting.

“Our solar panels provide us with about 8 [percent] to 10 percent in energy savings right now, and our energy savings should be at around 16 percent with the addition of the new panels,” Executive Director Jim Scholtz said.

The library installed its first 10-kilowatt solar panel structure in 2014. The cost of the installation was $53,000.

For the upcoming project, Johnsburg-based Magitek Energy Solution Inc. will be upgrading the existing system along with installing the new system.

Scholtz said this solar project is

“We’re able to get payback for 125 credits at $240, which basically means we save $30,000.”

“The project really only costs $10,000 because of the SRECs,” Scholtz said.

“Since this solar contractor already had purchased some SRECs, we’re able to get payback for 125 credits at $240, which basically means we save $30,000.”

She was an avid Cubs fan, loved to play golf, and a good game of cards.

Lucile is survived by her son, Frank (Carolyn) Oakley; her granddaughters, Kathy (John) Kadlec and Anna (Peter) van Ophem; her great-grandchildren, Richard, Max, and Emerson Kersten, and Sydney and Madison van Ophem; her step-great-grandchildren, Kyle and Chloe Kadlec; her sister-in-law, Jane Morehead; and many nieces and nephews.

STATE Farrakhan sees a new opening for black separatist message

extremism, has found black separatism growing alongside white supremacy, creating a more favorable environment for the Nation’s teachings.

“Racial nationalism of all kinds is on the rise,” said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The Nation has been largely closed off to outsiders, making it impossible even for those who follow the movement closely to gauge its strength. Neither Farrakhan nor the head minister of the movement’s Mosque Maryam in Chicago, Ishmael Muhammad, responded to interview requests.

Still, Farrakhan and his message of black empowerment clearly have an ongoing impact. The Million Man March he organized in 1995, drawing hundreds of thousands to Washington, remains a cultural touchstone, and hiphop artists praise him in their music.

The Nation has an extensive prison ministry, along with health and social service programs, and the movement’s militia, the Fruit of Islam, provides security at public housing and elsewhere.

That name recognition and high level of organization has left the Nation well situated to take advantage of the

current political moment, including the emergence of Black Lives Matter protests over police shootings of black men.

“We have to turn to each other,” said Nation member Duane Muhammad, 63, a Chicago-area elected official who helps produce videos of Farrakhan.

In Chicago, Nation members stood between police and marchers at a post-Thanksgiving protest last year over the killing of black teenager Laquan McDonald by a white police officer. Marchers blocked traffic and store entrances along the Magnificent Mile shopping district, and Nation members “formed a line and made sure we were OK,” said Ja’Mal Green, a Chicago activist.

Zain Abdullah, a Temple University professor who specializes in Islamic studies, noted the Nation first gained national prominence in 1957 after their stunningly disciplined Harlem protest after police beat Nation member Johnson Hinton. “Before that, the membership was a couple of hundred.

After that, people were coming to the temple to listen and join,” Abdullah said.

It was the week after Donald Trump won the presidency. The result had delighted a new generation of white supremacists, and Farrakhan was analyzing the political landscape.

In a speech before the State of the Black World Conference in New Jersey, he warned, “The white man is going to push. He’s putting in place the very thing that will limit the freedom of others.” Then he pointed to the crowd, smiled and said, “That’s what you needed,” as motivation to finally separate from whites.

“My message to Mr. Trump: Push it real good,” Farrakhan said, building to a roar that drew applause and cheers. “Push it so good that black people say, ‘I’m outta here. I can’t take it no more.’ ” After a presidential campaign that emboldened white identity politics, the Nation of Islam, a black separatist religious movement, is positioning itself as newly relevant.

CHICAGO – Dangerous, record-low temperatures caused cancellations of some holiday festivities in the Plains and Midwest over the weekend before the cold front pushed into the Ohio Valley and the Eastern Seaboard on Sunday.

Cook Co. Jail officials find laptop in inmate’s cell

CHICAGO – Cook County Jail officials are trying to figure out how an inmate who was allowed access to a laptop to prepare for his criminal case was able to keep it there long enough to record homemade talk shows on it.

In a news release, the sheriff’s department said 41-year-old Jimmie Smith had the laptop in his cell on Dec. 5 when officers tried to retrieve it. During a confrontation, he allegedly punched an officer in the face. He was charged with aggravated battery.

An investigation revealed that Smith, who is being held without bond on several charges including attempted murder and kidnapping, had recorded a show he called “My Back’s Against the Wall” while in jail. The computer also contained lewd

Gary, Hammond, East Chicago getting $5.6M for blighted homes

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority said the Lake County cities of Gary, Hammond and East Chicago will receive a combined $5.6 million to eliminate blighted homes.

The agency said Gary will receive $4.4 million; East Chicago, $914,000; and Hammond, $268,000. The Blight Elimination Program funds will be drawn from the $221.7 million in federal funds the state has received.

The agency said the three cities were eligible to receive the funds after meeting certain milestones in an initial round of funding.

The funds are not grants but are structured as forgivable loans.

France, Russia reach compromise as Aleppo rescue still uncertain

LEDERER The Associated Press BEIRUT – France struck a compromise Sunday with Russia on a U.N. resolution that it said would prevent “mass atrocities” in besieged areas of Aleppo, where thousands of trapped civilians and rebel fighters await evacuation in freezing temperatures.

On the ground, prospects for swift evacuations from Aleppo and other besieged areas were thrown into doubt again Sunday after militants burned buses assigned to the rescue operation, although one convoy of five buses was reported to have reached safety from the city late Sunday.

The Aleppo evacuations were to have been part of a wider deal that would simultaneously allow more than 2,000 sick and wounded people to leave two pro-government villages that have been besieged by Syrian rebels. Most villagers are Shiite Muslims, while most rebels are Sunni Muslims.

Six buses that were among those poised to enter the villages of Foua and Kfarya on Sunday were set on fire by unidentified militants, presumably to scuttle any deal.

A video posted online showed armed men near the burning buses as celebratory gunshots rang out. “The buses that came to evacuate the apostates have been burned,” the narrator of the video said. He warned that no “Shiite pigs” would be allowed to leave the towns.

The video could not be verified independently, but was in line with Associated Press report-

ing from the area.

Earlier Sunday, pro-Syrian government TV stations showed dozens of buses on stand-by at a crossing near eastern Aleppo, reportedly poised to resume evacuations from the opposition’s last foothold in the city. Later, a Syrian opposition war monitoring group said the first civilians and fighters to evacuate eastern Aleppo in over 48 hours arrived safely in the countryside from the city. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said shortly before midnight Sunday that government forces allowed five buses to leave Aleppo.

Evacuations were suspended two days earlier amid mutual recriminations after several thousand people had been ferried out of the war zone. Thousands more desperate civilians are believed trapped in the city.

About 2,700 children were evacuated in the first rescue mission earlier this week, but hundreds more “are now waiting in freezing temperatures, close to the front lines,” said Shushan Mebrahtu of the U.N. agency for children, UNICEF. “We are deeply worried.”

The troubled evacuations are throwing into disarray an Aleppo deal that was brokered last week by Syria ally Russia and opposition supporter Turkey.

The deal marked a turning point in the country’s civil war. With the opposition leaving Aleppo, Syrian President Bashar Assad has effectively reasserted his control over Syria’s five largest cities and its Mediterranean coast nearly six years after a national movement to unseat him took hold.

By JIM GOMEZ The Associated Press MANILA, Philippines – The United States said Sunday that it would work with the Philippine president to address any concerns after he threatened to terminate a pact that allows U.S. troops to visit the Philippines.

President Rodrigo Duterte was enraged after a U.S. government aid agency deferred a vote on a renewal of a major development assistance package for the Philippines over concerns about extrajudicial killings in Duterte’s war on illegal drugs, which has left thousands dead.

Although no decision on the aid package has been taken, Duterte on Saturday launched an expletives-laden tirade, telling the U.S. to “prepare to leave the Philippines, prepare for the eventual repeal or the abrogation of the Visiting Forces Agreement.”

He was referring to a 1998 accord that governs American forces visiting the Philippines for joint combat exercises.

The pact has helped the Philippines contain a violent Muslim insurgency in the

south and train and equip Filipino forces facing an assertive China in disputed South China Sea waters.

“You know, tit for tat ... if you can do this, so [can] we. It ain’t a one-way traffic,” Duterte said, adding tauntingly, “Bye-bye America.”

The U.S. Embassy in Manila said in a statement that Washington would work closely with the Duterte administration to address any concerns it may have. It did not elaborate.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment, but spokesman Josh Earnest has said previously that the White House would not react publicly each time Duterte made an offhand remark.

The 71-year-old Duterte, who describes himself as a left-wing politician, has made similar threats before and after taking office in June, but he and his officials have walked back on many of his public statements, causing confusion.

While calling Americans “sons of bitches” and “hypocrites,” Duterte on Saturday praised China as having “the kindest soul of all” for offering what

he said was significant financial assistance. “So what do I need America for?” he asked.

He also said Russia can be a very important ally. “They do not insult people, they do not interfere,” he said.

The Philippines had been slated for another aid package after its previous five-year, $434 million poverty reduction program was successfully completed in May under Duterte’s predecessor, Benigno Aquino III. A spokeswoman for the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Laura Allen, said Thursday that it would continue to monitor events in the Philippines before the next board review in March 2017.

The U.S. decision is among the first signs of how concerns about the rule of law and human rights under Duterte could entail economic costs.

The U.S. government, along with European Union and U.N. officials, has raised concerns about Duterte’s crackdown on illegal drugs, which has left more than 2,000 suspected drug users and dealers dead in purported gunbattles with police. More than 3,000 other

deaths are being investigated to determine if they were linked to illegal drugs.

At a news conference in his southern hometown of Davao, Duterte was asked Saturday how many crime suspects he killed while he was a crime-busting city mayor. The former government prosecutor again gave contrasting replies.

“Maybe one, two three ... I’m saying, maybe my bullets hit them, maybe not, but after the burumbumbumbum, they’re all dead,” Duterte said.

Replying to another question, he said that he indeed has killed, but did not provide details and tried to justify his act. “When I tell you now that I killed, do not term them as suspects because all of them died while they were fighting government people,” he said.

He asked God for forgiveness in advance, saying he may not have time to pray if he’s assassinated. “God, forgive me for killing these idiots,” Duterte said, before blaming God for the presence of criminals. “You create a human monster, so if you are God, why do you have to create these idiots? That’s why they die.”

HOUSTON – A nearly four-day ban on drinking the water in Corpus Christi, Texas, was lifted on Sunday after test results showed no contamination from a chemical leak, the city’s mayor announced.

Mayor Dan McQueen said residents could resume using the city’s water supply for drinking, bathing and cooking.

“It is all full use but we are going to continue to monitor as we go on,” McQueen said.

None of the 28 drinking water samples the Environmental Protection Agency reviewed tested positive for Indulin AA-86, an asphalt-emulsifying agent that’s corrosive, the federal agency said Sunday in a statement. Indulin can burn the eyes, skin and respiratory tract if a person comes into contact with concentrated amounts.

The water ban had been issued late Wednesday out of concern that a chemical leak at an asphalt plant leased to Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions by oil refiner Valero could have contaminated the city’s water supply.

The EPA said there have been seven “unconfirmed” reports of symptoms possibly related to prohibited water use. The federal agency, along with the Texas Commission on Environmental

There had been two reports earlier this month of dirty water at the plant site that resulted in city workers flushing out pipes. City officials have said such dirty-water reports are common.

Ergon had said in a statement that it uses a soap solution comprised of about 98 percent water and 2 percent Indulin and hydrochloric acid in its asphalt operations.

Assistant City Manager Mark Van Vleck had told The Associated Press on Saturday that city technicians responding to dirty water complaints at the plant were not alerted to white, sudsy water until Dec. 12.

But on Sunday, Van Vleck said he believes Valero’s version of events is probably accurate.

“When I read it I said, ‘That’s a little different from what I’ve been told,’” said Van Vleck, who added that he was going on what people in the public works department had told him.

Ergon has acknowledged the “soap solution” had backflowed into a pipe through which it receives water at the plant.

Trump action on health care could cost Planned Parenthood

By ANDREW TAYLOR The Associated Press WASHINGTON – One of President-elect Donald Trump’s first, and defining, acts next year could come on Republican legislation to cut off taxpayer money from Planned Parenthood.

Trump sent mixed signals during the campaign about the 100-year-old organization, which provides birth control, abortions and various women’s health services. He said “millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood,” but he also endorsed efforts to defund it.

Trump once described himself as “very pro-choice.” Now he’s in the anti-abortion camp.

Still, the Republican has been steadfast in calling for repeal of President Barack Obama’s health care law, and the GOP-led Congress is eager to comply. One of the first pieces of legislation will be a repeal measure that’s paired with cutting off money for Planned Parenthood. While the GOP may delay the impact of scuttling the law for almost four years, denying Planned Parenthood about $400 million in Medicaid funds would take effect immediately.

dream of social conservatives, but it’s a loser in the minds of some GOP strategists. Planned Parenthood is loathed by anti-abortion activists who are the backbone of the GOP coalition. Polls, however, show that the group is favorably viewed by a sizable majority of Americans – 59 percent in a Gallup survey last year, including more than one-third of Republicans.

“Defunding Planned Parenthood as one of their first acts in the new year would be devastating for millions of families and a huge mistake by Republicans,” said incoming Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. Democrats pledge to defend the group, and they point to the issue of birth control and women’s health as helping them win Senate races in New Hampshire and Nevada this year. They argue that Trump would be leading off with a political loser. But if he were to have second thoughts and if the Planned Parenthood provision were to be dropped from the health law repeal, then social conservatives probably would erupt.

“They may well be able to succeed, but the women of America are going to know what that means,” said Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., citing reduced access to services Planned Parenthood clinics provide. “And we’re going to call Republicans on the carpet for that.”

At least one Republican senator, Susan Collins of Maine, may oppose the effort. Collins has defended Planned Parenthood, saying it “provides important family planning, cancer screening and basic preventive health care services to millions of women across the country.”

She voted against the health overhaul repeal last year as a result.

KARAK, Jordan – Gunmen assaulted Jordanian police in a series of attacks Sunday, including at a Crusader castle popular with tourists, killing seven officers, two local civilians and a woman visiting from Canada, officials said.

Several armed men were reported barricaded inside the castle after nightfall, hemmed in by special forces soldiers.

At least 34 people, including two foreign nationals, were wounded in the day’s violence, which was one of the bloodiest attacks in Jordan in recent memory.

Security officials said in a statement late Sunday that at least four gunmen were killed and that troops continued to search the area. The statement said large amounts of weapons had been seized. It made no reference to local media reports that at one point, the attackers had held hostages.

The shootings were the latest in a series of attacks that have challenged this pro-Western kingdom’s claim to be an oasis of calm in a region threatened by Islamic extremists.

The killing of the Canadian tourist could further hurt Jordan’s embattled tourism sector, which has declined sharply since the Islamic State group seized large parts of neighboring Syria and Iraq two years ago.

Another Canadian was injured in the shooting, Canada’s Global Affairs spokesman John Babcock said.

“Canadian officials in Amman are actively working with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to Canadians at this difficult time,” he said.

The Canadian Embassy in Amman issued an alert warning urging Canadians to avoid travel to Karak, a town in central Jordan about 87 miles south of

the capital.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks in and near Karak.

The chain of events began when a police patrol received reports of a house fire in the town of Qatraneh in the Karak district, said a statement by Jordan’s Public Security Directorate. Officers responding to the call came under fire from inside the house, the statement said. Two policemen were wounded and the assailants fled in a car, it said.

In another attack, gunmen fired on a security patrol in Karak, causing no injuries, the statement said.

Armed men also opened fire on a police station at Karak Castle, a Crusader fort, wounding members of security forces. The statement said five or six gunmen were believed to be holed up inside the castle.

In all, seven members of the security forces, two local civilians and the tourist from Canada were killed, security officials said. Fifteen members of the security forces, 17 local civilians and two foreign nationals were injured.

Jordan faces homegrown extremism, with hundreds of Jordanians fighting alongside other Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria and several thousand more supporting the extremist group in the kingdom. Jordan is a key U.S. ally, and a member of a U.S.-led military coalition fighting IS. Over the past year, gunmen have carried out several attacks on members of the Jordanian security forces and foreign trainers. Earlier this year, Jordanian security forces engaged in a deadly shootout with suspected IS sympathizers in a northern Jordanian town.

In the most recent incident, three U.S. military members were killed in a shooting outside an air base in southern Jordan in November. The three were in Jordan on a training mission, and came under fire while driving into the base.

Trump and legalized pot In November, eight more states voted to legalize medical or recreational marijuana. In all, 29 states have approved the medicinal use of marijuana and only six have done nothing to ease the prohibition of pot.

All that could be undone by one simple fact: President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., to be his attorney general and, as reported

by Politico, Sessions has a long history of opposing marijuana and any steps to legalize it. He has called reform of marijuana laws a “tragic mistake” and once said he thought members of the Ku Klux Klan “were OK until I found out they smoked pot.”

A reversal of current policy by Sessions is a real possibility. Under federal law, marijuana remains classified as a Schedule 1 narcotic, the same as heroin. With that, he would need no additional authorization or authority to start cracking down on all involved.

That is a problem – and not just for those who like their weed. For starters, everywhere it has occurred, legalization has been accomplished by a vote of the people.

Barring a profound constitutional conflict, those votes should be respected.

More than half of all Americans now live in states where medical marijuana is allowed, while 65 million live where recreational marijuana is legal. And, according to Politico, marijuana is now a $6.7 billion industry.

Fortune reported in February that it topped $1 billion in Colorado alone. It also means jobs. CBS News reports that nationwide, the marijuana trade employs roughly the same number of people – more than 100,000 – as there are flight attendants, web developers or librarians.

Moreover, legal marijuana has become a major source of revenue for a number of states. Counting total revenue from marijuana taxes, licenses and fees, Colorado reported that it took in almost $73 million in one year.

That is real money, especially to a state perennially strapped for cash. It would be wrong to let one man upset all that based solely on his own prejudice – and in defiance of millions of voters.

It seems unlikely that the Senate will refuse to confirm Sessions as attorney general, despite his poor record on civil rights and other issues. But there is one other man who could prevent causing trouble over pot. As president, Donald Trump could simply tell Sessions to respect the voters and leave marijuana alone. And Politico quoted U.S. Rep. Jared Polis, D-Boulder, urging just that.

“If we don’t take action and hold President-elect Trump accountable,” Polis said, “in one fell swoop, the federal government could damage state economies, and discourage entrepreneurship – placing some of our innovators behind bars, all while eroding states’ rights.”

Polis is right, of course. The question now is whether Trump is listening.

For many, the cold weather simply enhances the feeling of the Christmas season. It is particularly fun when the cold weather is associated with clear skies and bright sunshine.

It brings to mind cuddling up with loved ones before a roaring fire, drinking hot chocolate and contentment.

But for others, the cold weather and gray skies often conjure up other thoughts, much less happy ones.

As days get shorter, darker and colder, many people experience the blues, also known as the holiday blues.

The Mississippi Department of Mental Health says this depression for many

Experts say changing levels of the brain chemicals melatonin and serotonin, which plays a role in our mood and how we sleep, triggers the depression. Seratonin is the body’s feel-good chemical and it’s generated in part by sunlight. When we are exposed to less sunlight, we could experience lower levels of serotonin.

The good news is help is available. If you or a loved one is experiencing sadness, loss of interest in activities you typically enjoy, feelings of hopelessness or a strong depression, please reach out for help.

That policy bore some fruit and contributed to the Sino-Soviet split. Indeed, Mao believed that Khrushchev’s embrace of “peaceful coexistence” with the West proved that United States had weakened the U.S.S.R.’s revolutionary resolve.

In October 1959, Khrushchev, fresh from meeting Eisenhower at Camp David, arrived in Beijing with the news that because the U.S.S.R. had improved relations with the United States, he would have to scrap Moscow’s agreement to help China build an atomic bomb.

Ten years later, Nixon reversed the policy of Eisenhower, whom he had served as vice president, and engaged Beijing in the United States’ global competition with the Soviet Union. Several years later, President Jimmy Carter doubled down. As a means to block the spread of Soviet influence in Southeast Asia, Carter administration officials approved of the Chinese invasion of Vietnam, which occurred shortly after Deng Xiaoping concluded the first trip of a Chinese leader to the United States in January 1979. Subsequent U.S. administrations, both Democratic and Republican, cooperated with China in proxy wars against the U.S.S.R. The question now is, will Trump’s pivot work in a world that has changed vastly since the days of the Cold War? What, other than bedeviling Beijing, are its goals? And what will the U.S. have to give Russia to pry it from Beijing’s embrace?

China’s relations with Russia are businesslike.

The two routinely back each other on the U.N. Security Council. China has purchased more than $30 billion in weapons from Russia over the last several decades.

But Russia has also chafed under the impression that it is now the junior partner in its relations with Beijing. China’s economy was once a fraction of the Soviet economy; now it’s about five times larger. In the 1950s, during the heyday of Sino-Soviet relations, Chinese called Russia “big brother.” Now they jokingly call it “big sister.”

China is no longer the poor backwater it was in 1972. It responded to Trump’s call with Taiwan by flying a bomber over the South China Sea. And Russia is led by a man who is dedicated to restoring Russia’s influence to the days when the Soviet Union struck fear in countries around the world.

Trump’s willingness to play Kissinger’s “balance-of-power game” promises a new era of unpredictability in a world where American power is no longer unparalleled and unchallenged.

On Feb. 14, 1972, President Richard Nixon and his national security adviser Henry Kissinger met to discuss Nixon’s upcoming trip to China.

Kissinger, who had already taken his secret trip to China to begin Nixon’s historic opening to Beijing, expressed the view that compared with the Russians, the Chinese were “just as dangerous. In fact, they’re more dangerous over a historical period.”

Kissinger then observed that “in 20 years your successor, if he’s as wise as you, will wind up leaning towards the Russians against the Chinese.” He argued that the United States, as it sought to profit from the enmity between Moscow and Beijing, needed “to play this balance-of-power game totally unemotionally. Right now, we need the Chinese to correct the Russians and to discipline the Russians.” But in the future, it would be the other way around.

Could it be that, almost 45 years after Nixon’s breakthrough with China, the United States’ 45th president will be taking Kissinger’s advice?

President Barack Obama tried to make a “pivot” to Asia the capstone of his foreign policy. Will Donald Trump make a “pivot” toward Moscow, and away from Beijing, a capstone of his?

With a series of tweets, phone calls, interviews and statements by surrogates, President-elect Trump has signaled a new, tough policy against China.

Breaking with decades of precedent, he spoke directly with the president of Taiwan, who called on Dec. 2 to congratulate him on his victory. Two days later, in an interview with “Fox News Sunday,” Trump raised questions about the one-China policy, under which Washington, Beijing and Taipei have kept the peace in Asia since the Nixon trip.

He accused China of manipulating its currency, cheating the United States on trade and failing to help the United States deal with the North Korean nuclear program. Meanwhile, Carly Fiorina, who is reportedly under consideration to be Trump’s director of national intelligence, met with the president-elect Monday and emerged from the conversation announcing that the pair had discussed China as “probably our most important adversary and a rising adversary.”

On the Russian front, Trump had kind words for Russian President Vladimir Putin on the campaign trail. Last week, he announced that Rex Tillerson, who has had a long relationship with Putin, will be his nominee for secretary of state.

Trump’s pick for national security adviser, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, is also believed to have ties to Russia and has argued for closer coordination between Moscow and Washington in the fight against the Islamic State.

Last week, Trump labeled as “ridiculous” accusations from the Central Intelligence Agency that the Russian government, by hacking into computers used by officials from the campaign of Hillary Clinton, endeavored to help him win last month’s election.

The triangle between Washington, Moscow and Beijing figured mightily during the Cold War. In the 1950s, the Eisenhower administration treated the Russians significantly better than the Chinese

Vitamin D supplement may not be necessary Dear Doctor: Should I take large doses of vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis?

Dear Reader: This is an excellent question. Vitamin D appears to be a wonder vitamin in regard to health. For whatever ails you, it seems, vitamin D is the cure.

But that’s not necessarily true.

Vitamin D is so crucial for healthy bones that deficiencies in children lead to the malformed bones seen in rickets.

Because vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, it’s vital for a host of other biological functions as well. In fact, vitamin D acts more like a hormone in that way.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is 600 to 800 units. It can be found in foods fortified with vitamin D – and the numbers of those products seem to be increasing – or from fatty fish or eggs. But the majority of the vitamin D our bodies need begins with UVB light; our bodies use this light to produce the precursors of vitamin D. Adults who are out in the sun regularly and have normal vitamin D levels probably don’t need a vitamin D supplement. A meta-analysis published in the renowned medical journal The Lancet reviewed 24 studies that followed patients who took vitamin D. The research found little change in bone density with supplementation of vitamin D. Some studies found vitamin D reduced the risk of bone fracture – but only when it was combined with calcium.

Calcium on its own has been shown repeatedly to decrease the risk of fractures.

Vitamin D on its own has not been shown to decrease fracture risk.

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley ga-doses of vitamin D to their patients, causing very high blood levels of it. But high levels of vitamin D in the bloodstream might actually increase the rate of bone breakdown.

The highest daily intake considered safe by the Institute for Medicine is 4,000 units.

If you are taking vitamin D, have your blood levels checked. For the prevention of osteoporosis, the Institute of Medicine recommends a vitamin D blood level greater than 20 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter).

The majority of people can achieve this level without supplementation, but if you do supplement, 600 units is more than sufficient.

As for all the other purported health benefits of vitamin D, such as its ability to decrease the risk of cancer and heart attacks, there may be benefit to vitamin D intake, but we’re not sure yet. We need good long-term studies that compare people who take vitamin D daily against those who don’t.

Until then, if you don’t have osteoporosis and you do have sufficient vitamin D levels in your blood, there appears to be little additional benefit to taking a vitamin D supplement.

My male friends tell me to quit looking for a long-term commitment and just date for sex. Neither of these options appeals to me. Over three spades, South should control-bid four clubs, North would control-bid four hearts, and the contract would be either six spades or (if North-South use Roman Key Card Blackwood) perhaps only five spades when South learns a key card (an ace or the spade king) and the spade queen are missing.

In six spades, South should not be influenced by West’s lead into thinking that he has the spade queen. West’s lead is normal after any sensible sequence. The percentage play is to finesse spades through East because declarer can pick up queen-fourth. Win trick two with the diamond queen, cash the spade king, play a spade to the jack and, assuming the finesse wins and West follows suit, draw the last trump and claim.

Packers’ dominance of Bears no fluke The Bears’ 30-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at Soldier Field on a 32-yard Mason Crosby field goal with no time left on the clock left Bears fans wondering again why the Packers beat the Bears so often.

Many fingers were being pointed at coach John Fox’s clock management and/or his decision to kick a tying 22yard field goal on fourth-and-goal from the Packers 4-yard line with 1:19 to play after driving 75 yards on 14 plays to get there.

Right or wrong, Fox is not the real problem.

This is why the Packers are the Packers and the Bears are the Bears.

After taking over as the Packers general manager in January 2005, Ted Thompson used his first draft choice three months later to select future NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers with the 24th pick in the first round after 23 teams passed on him, including the Bears, who used their first pick to take Cedric Benson fourth.

Over that same time frame, the Bears have drafted quarterbacks Kyle Orton in the fourth round of 2005, 80 picks after Rodgers, Dan LeFevour, Nathan Enderle and David Fales, and they traded two first-round picks and a third-rounder for Jay Cutler.

The star of the game Sunday for the Packers was running back Ty Montgomery, drafted as a receiver with the 94th pick in the third round of the 2015 draft.

In the first round of that draft, the Bears took Kevin White, who is on

injured reserve for the second straight season. In the second round, they took Eddie Goldman, who was inactive Sunday with a bum ankle for the eighth time this season, and in the third round, 23 picks in front of Montgomery, the Bears took center Hroniss Grasu, who has spent the entire season on IR and when healthy is a backup at best to rookie Cody Whitehair.

The defensive star for Green Bay on Sunday was safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix with two interceptions. He was drafted with the 21st pick in the first round of 2014 after the Bears, desperate at Clinton-Dix’s position, selected cornerback Kyle Fuller seven picks earlier, even though they already had Pro Bowlers Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings on the roster.

3 things that worked Fourth-quarter Barkley: The Bears’ quarterback rallied back from four turnovers to complete 15 of 20 passes in the final quarter for 166 yards and a touchdown, leading the Bears to 17 consecutive points to tie the score.

Special teams: Josh Bellamy downed one Pat O’Donnell punt at the 1-yard line, and another punt of his was returned for only 2 yards. Bellamy also stuck Ty Montgomery on a kickoff return, forcing the Packers to start a drive at the 15-yard line. Connor Barth made both of his field goals.

Red-zone defense: The defense held inside the 20, where the Packers scored touchdowns on only two of five opportunities. Granted, one of those red-zone field goals was the game-winning kick from Mason Crosby, but the Bears never would have been in position to tie if the defense hadn’t made stops near the goal line.

Tackling Ty: A few days after Vic Fangio reminded everyone how bad the Bears defense he inherited was, Packers wideout-turned-running back Ty Montgomery made this ‘D’ look like the old group. He rushed for 162 yards, including a 61-yarder – the longest run the Bears had allowed since 2013.

Protecting the football: The end-of-half interception on a Hail Mary wasn’t a big deal, but the ensuing fumble on a strip-sack and back-to-back interceptions in the third quarter were. The Bears were fortunate to make it a game after four total giveaways and zero takeaways to back it up.

Third-down offense: The Bears were 3 for 8 on third down, including missing on manageable opportunities in the first quarter (third-and-3, third-and-4). The most notable miss came on the final drive, when Micah Hyde broke up a pass to Cameron Meredith, forcing the Bears to settle for a tying field goal.

Adams’ first drop: Packers wideout Davante Adams, who torched the Bears in Lambeau Field, had two drops in the end zone. His first, with 50 seconds left in the first half, kept the Packers from taking the lead before halftime. They settled for a field goal and a 10-10 score.

Paulsen’s hold: The Bears were in business with 1:50 left in the game, trailing by three. They had first-and-goal at the Packers’ 3-yard line, but Logan Paulsen was called for a holding penalty, backing them up. The Bears did have two shots from the 4-yard line but eventually kicked a field goal after an incomplete pass on third-and-goal.

Rodgers to Nelson: A play that seemed oh-so-Packers and oh-so-Bears, symbolizing the rivalry in the past eight years. Facing third-and-11 with 31 seconds left in a tie game, Rodgers launched it to Jordy Nelson behind corner Cre’Von LeBlanc with no safety in sight. The 60-yard play set up the winning field goal, making the Bears’ comeback attempt fall short.

Record: 3-11 What it means: A Jaguars loss keeps the Bears in position for the No. 4 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Barkley’s seesaw game fails to ‘wow’ Pack

CHICAGO – Julius Peppers did not appreciate the presumption that Matt Barkley’s fourth-quarter performance was impressive to the nine-time Pro Bowler.

“Who said I was impressed?” Peppers responded after the Packers’ 30-27 win at Soldier Field.

“I thought he played well. I’m not discrediting him or trying to say anything bad about him, he played a helluva game,” said the former Bear, “but I wasn’t impressed.”

Barkley has become a popular player for fans of this 3-11 team. He hasn’t played like a third-stringer that a rebuilding team is riding out to the finish.

At times, he has played like the former No. 1 player in the country, someone who could be in the quarterback conversation in Chicago in 2017, or elsewhere.

His two interceptions in the third quarter, however, showed Barkley playing like the career backup he has

“He was a good quarterback. He made the throws he needed to make, besides the two mistakes he made to me, which was a blessing, thank you,” said Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. “He’s a good quarterback. He’s going to develop into something special.”

That was high praise for Barkley, and what the Bears’ personnel staff is working to evaluate, but the two picks

didn’t help the “something special” potential.

On his first INT, Barkley said he “just hung on to it too long, hoping [Daniel Brown] was going to win” The second interception, also over the middle, came when Barkley thought Daniel Braverman “was going to cross face and get around the guy, but it didn’t happen that way, the way I played it out in my mind.”

The Packers took advantage and went up, 27-10, in single-digit temperatures, but Barkley – the “Cali boy,” as teammates mockingly reminded him of during the week of practice – battled back, as he has often since becoming the starter.

“I just kind of settled down and didn’t try to force anything,” he said.

“I stuck with my reads, and guys were getting open.”

Barkley completed 15 of 20 passes in the fourth quarter, including a touchdown to Alshon Jeffery. The Bears tied the score at 27 instead of taking the lead because Micah Hyde broke up Barkley’s pass to Cameron Meredith on

third-and-goal late in the game.

The Packers seemed to give credit to Barkley for making the plays but weren’t overly enamored with the specific plays he was making. They praised Barkley but certainly didn’t anoint him.

“He was making the easy throws, it’s as simple as that,” Hyde said. “He knew what defense we were in and just made the easy throws, and the receivers were breaking tackles, I think there were a couple penalties. He adjusted to his mistakes and went out there and played huge in that fourth quarter.”

Peppers gave props for the Bears’ comeback to John Fox – coincidentally (or not), the coach who drafted Peppers in 2002 with Carolina.

“That’s more of a reflection of the head coach,” Peppers said. “His imprint was on that of how he plays the game and how those guys follow him. They got down – that was a tough spot for them to be in – but they kept fighting, made a comeback and made it a great game. I think that was more of a reflection of Coach Fox than anybody else.”

“I don’t know who else is out there,” Battaglia said. “We don’t have a lot of depth this year. That’s one thing that definitely hurts.”

The Wolves were deep enough in 2015 to win without Riley Mahoney, who suffered a torn ACL and was out for the season. Mahoney now competes Nikki Baars at Illinois-Chicago.

They scored 150.6, their highest score in team history, to win state last season with a lineup that often used eight competitors.

Nikki Baars, a Kira Karlblom senior who attends Cary-Grove, tied for third in the all-around at state and won the uneven bars title last season.

Baars returns to lead this group. Kim and Kira Karlblom, both sophomores at Prairie Ridge, are other key returning athletes, along with Alyssa Petko, a senior from C-G. Two newcomers, sophomore Macy Woodlock and freshman Katie McEnery (both from South), and Clancy Raupp, a sophomore at Central, round out the lineup.

“We have pressure (as two-time defending state champs), but we can’t let that get to us,” Baars said. “We keep it in the back of our minds, but we don’t let it show in our performances.”

Kim and Karlblom will assume bigger roles this season rather than competing in one or two events a meet.

“We’re pretty solid. There’s always room for improvement, taking those little wobbles out,” Karlblom said.

“We had so many other girls (last season), super-talented. There aren’t as many, but we’re still really talented.”

Baars has added skills in her floor routine and a new dismount on bars that can improve her scores. She could be a contender again for the allaround title.

“As long as I hit everything and keep training and get my release on bars, hopefully, I’ll be in my same spot (near the top),” Baars said.

Kim and Karlblom have worked on their consistency.

“I’ve gotten physically stronger,” Kim said. “I’m better at staying on my feet on floor. I feel like I’m stronger than last year.”

Raupp has fought through some injuries recently, but Battaglia sees her as a key for the team.

“She’s my ace in the hole,” Battaglia said. “The way I’m looking at it, she’s a huge competitor, she’s got all the stuff. It’s just a matter of getting her back in shape. We’re relying a lot on Clancy for that fourth score.”

Battaglia knows last year’s depth was a luxury, yet still looks toward making a run at a third title.

“Maddy and Kira will be better contributors this year; they’re a year older; they’re a year better,” Battaglia said. “They’re a huge part of our program. They have to hit their events; their scores are going to count.”

Green Bay drafted Hyde with the 159th pick in the fifth round of the 2013 draft after the Bears drafted Jon Bostic with the 50th pick and Khaseem Greene with the 117th pick.

On the first play of the second half, the Packers got a sack, strip and fumble recovery from Julius Peppers that led to a field goal.

Peppers was available after the Bears released him in 2014, and since becoming a Packer he has notched 24 sacks and seven forced fumbles.

Over that same period of time, Willie Young leads the Bears with 24 sacks and three forced fumbles, and second is Pernell McPhee with nine sacks and two forced fumbles.

The Bears’ offensive line includes four draft choices – Kyle Long, Cody Whitehair, Hroniss Grasu and Charles Leno Jr. Green Bay’s O-line includes seven draft choices – Bryan Bulaga (first round), Jason Spriggs (second), David Bakhtiari (fourth), J.C. Every one of them is home grown.

The Packers almost always beat the Bears because they are built to win, and the Bears are not, or at least not yet.

The Wolves graduated Maddie Solka, one of the state’s best all-around performers, along with Kendall Rumford and Becca Ruff from last year’s team. Prairie Ridge coach Lee Battaglia, who owns Crystal Lake Gymnastics Training Center, where his team trains, said there still is a hunger for a team that has brought home trophies each of the past five seasons.

“It’s a really, really good feeling, and once you have that (state title), you want it every year,” Battaglia said. “You expect to have it. I knew the last two years our shot was really good. I felt really confident. It put more pressure on me and the kids because they knew it, too. This year is not the same. DeKalb is a very, very good team and has a slight edge on us right now.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars fired Gus Bradley on Sunday, ending one of the least successful coaching tenures in NFL history.

Owner Shad Khan announced the decision after a 21-20 loss at Houston, in which the Jaguars (2-12) blew a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Khan considered the move in late October, after a debacle at Tennessee on national TV, but opted to keep Bradley for seven more weeks. During that time, Jacksonville lost to backup quarterbacks Tom Savage (Houston), Paxton Lynch (Denver) and Nick Foles (Kansas City).

Bradley went 14-48 in four seasons in Jacksonville, the worst winning percentage (.225) of any NFL coach with at least 60 games.

Chicago-area natives boost Hawks

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Even now, even after all of these games and all those of road trips and all of those battles won and lost, it sometimes seems surreal to drive to work every day for Scott Darling, Ryan Hartman and Vinnie Hinostroza.

“You’re living in downtown Chicago and you’re playing for the Blackhawks,” Hartman said. “And it’s a blessing every day to be able to contribute and help the team win.”

The heroes of Sunday night’s 4-1 victory over the defending Western Conference champion San Jose Sharks weren’t of the superstar variety. They were of the local variety.

Darling, the Lemont native, made 33 saves after convincing Joel Quenneville to let him start his ninth game in 16 days.

Hartman, the West Dundee kid, scored the game-winning goal in the third period.

Hinostroza, the Bartlett product, set up Hartman’s winner and tacked on a badly needed insurance goal of his own.

Playing their sixth game in 10 days, without their second-leading goal-scorer, in the middle of the dog days of December, it was the Hawks’ youthful locals who stepped up and delivered. And while they’re no longer slack-jawed, starry-eyed kids in the dressing room, it hasn’t stopped being, well, awfully cool.

“We’re just happy to be on the team,” Darling said. “We’re happy to chip in.

For all of us, we just want to stay here and play as much as we can. So we’re happy to be doing our jobs.”

It was entirely reasonable to expect the weary Hawks to lay an egg against a Sharks team that intentionally stayed off of the ice all weekend.

But they won, anyway, the latest gutsy performance by a team making a habit of pulling out unlikely victories.

Whether they’re at their best or not, the Hawks just keep winning.

Tight until the final minutes, the win extended their hot streak to 6-0-1 – all without Corey Crawford, some without Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook, and Sunday without Artem Anisimov.

“I think we’ve got a great group of players that play the right way,” Quenneville said. “You lose one guy, and somebody will absorb that responsibility, jumping in the lineup. But [it’s] the leadership, as far as playing the right way, knowing the importance of finding a way to keep themselves in games, and getting points in games.”

Trailing 1-0 on Joe Pavelski’s goal 73 seconds into the second, Darling made two big stops to survive an extended Sharks shift in the offensive zone, during which they hit two posts. Moments later, the Hawks tied the game as Duncan Keith finally got his first goal of the season, beating Martin Jones clean from the point.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead at 6:59 of the third when Hinostroza’s extra effort on a 50/50 faceoff nudged the puck to Hartman, who snapped a shot past Jones for his sixth goal of the season, and first in 12 games. Neither Hartman nor Jones quite knew where the puck was.

“I wasn’t actually sure where it went at first,” Hartman said. “But I heard the goal horn, so I think it surprised both of us.”

Crawford scheduled to return Friday vs. Colorado

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com The Blackhawks could be getting an early Christmas present – the return of Corey Crawford.

Coach Joel Quenneville said Sunday he’s targeting Friday’s game against Colorado for Crawford’s return to action. That would put the goalie right on the three-week timetable that was forecast after his emergency appendectomy Dec. 3 in Philadelphia.

“He was out there [Sunday] with some players, and so he got some good work again,” Quenneville said. “[He’ll practice on] Tuesday, and we’ll look at the 23rd as an option.”

Sunday’s game against the San Jose Corey Sharks was the ninth Crawford that Crawford has missed since his surgery. The Hawks, after stumbling in the first two games

against Philadelphia and Winnipeg, have gone 6-0-1 since, with Scott Darling playing very well until the two games before Sunday, when he gave up four goals each in high-scoring wins over the Islanders and Blues.

Sunday’s game was Darling’s ninth in 16 days, the busiest stretch of his career. Quenneville said he was seriously considering giving 29-year-old rookie Lars Johansson his NHL debut against the Sharks, but Darling convinced the coach he was still good to go.

Anisimov out: Artem Anisimov, who left Saturday’s game in the first period with an upper-body injury, did not play against San Jose. Quenneville said it was not a long-term concern.

With Anisimov out, and with the third line of Dennis Rasmussen, Marcus Kruger and Richard Panik performing so well lately, Vinnie Hinostroza moved up to center Ryan Hartman and Marian Hossa, while Jonathan Toews took Anisimov’s spot between Artemi Panarin and Patrick Kane.
