No altruistic candidates

To the Editor: Peggy Noonan’s article in the March 5 edition of the Wall Street Journal indicates that, like Humpty Dumpty, the Republican Party is broken. However, 40-plus years ago, I worked for City Colleges of Chicago, and my boss was a former Washington lobbyist for education, and he told me that in Washington, D.C., there were no Democrats or Republicans. They all were politicians, and one hand washed the other. The latest political attack ad about Donald Trump liking the “uneducated” was most likely written/funded by the elites who propagate Washington, D.C., and Illinois politics. Neither Trump nor Hillary Clinton are the reincarnations of the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, or the last true Democratic president, Harry Truman. Unfortunately, in this 21st century, altruism is not the reason anyone runs for U.S. president or Congress; it’s power, prestige and money. Robert Gebhardt Johnsburg

Gonsiorek will work for you

To the Editor: I encourage residents of County Board District 3 to vote for Nancy Gonsiorek. Nancy is a 20-year resident of the district and a certified public account with

Cam is the man

To the Editor: I have worked with Cameron Hubbard on the Crystal Lake Foundation Board. He is a man who is very detailed. He covers all of the bases when making decisions. He is a family man. He is dependable. He is responsible. He will make a great choice for you when deciding whom to vote for in District 2 as a new County Board member. Mike Splitt Crystal Lake

We can count on Franks

To the Editor: Jack Franks cares about all of us here in McHenry County. He always is fighting for us – lowering our taxes and any other issues we have. You always can count on him. Joanne Van Dever Woodstock

Support Gonsiorek

To the Editor: I am writing to express my support for Nancy Gonsiorek in the Republican primary for County Board District 3. It has been my pleasure to work with Nancy as a member of the District 47 school board. Nancy is a hardworking person who always puts the needs of the community first. She has a very good grasp on financial issues and subjects, and always is endeavoring to reduce

costs and improve the return on taxpayers’ dollars. I believe she is exactly the type of person we need to bring fiscal accountability and stability to the County Board. If you are in District 3, please support Nancy with your vote in the Republican primary. Jeff Mason Crystal Lake

Rely on Wilbeck

To the Editor: I am in favor of Tom Wilbeck for County Board because I believe he has the professionalism, proven business acumen and years of experience in county government positions to hit the ground running if he is elected. We will see an immediate positive effect with his presence on the county team. Having known Tom for several years and observing his consistent position on reducing taxes, but also adding value to the services of the taxpayer of McHenry County, I can say with confidence he will do an outstanding job on the County Board. He is someone we can rely on to do the right thing for the taxpayer. The taxpayer needs a champion, and that is Tom Wilbeck. The cronyism with this entire situation is a taxpayer’s nightmare. Consumers have right to know

To the Editor: If Monsanto and big food companies have their way, states will not have the right to require food labels to indicate whether they contain GMOs, or genetically modified organisms. Genetically engineered foods typically are modified to withstand the application of pesticides and herbicides to increase crop yields. There is little debate these chemicals are absorbed into the plants that eventually are eaten. The companies that produce GMO foods (and the herbicides and pesticides used

on them) argue they are perfectly safe. If that’s the case, then why have they and the Grocery Manufacturers Association spent more than $80 million to fight states who try to initiate labeling standards? If proposed legislation backed by Monsanto and the GMA passes, consumers will lose the right to know whether foods they and their children eat are made with GMOs because states will be prohibited from passing GMO labeling laws, even if their citizens want them. The argument over whether genetically engineered foods are safe still is raging, but more than 60 countries in the world consider it important enough to require some form of labeling on GMO foods. Don’t we, as consumers, deserve the right to know what’s in our food, or are the interests of food companies more important to our elected politicians? Call or email Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk today (www.durbin.senate. gov/contact; www.kirk.senate.gov/?p=contactand) and ask them to vote no on H.R. 1599/S.2609. Our right to know what’s in our food depends on it. Disappointed in dirty tactics

To the Editor: I am so very disappointed in the dirty campaign tactics I have seen in the race for McHenry County state’s attorney. I was shocked to see a candidate’s signs sandwiched and covered up by the opponent. It makes me question the ethics of the campaign, as well as the candidate doing these outrageous tactics. Citizens, take a drive all over the county and witness it for yourself. Dan Regna has exhibited great character for not responding or stooping to the antics of his opponent. For the above reasons, I endorse Dan Regna for state’s attorney. Nora Watson Marengo

To the Editor: The functions of the state’s attorney are two-fold: Legal representation for McHenry County, plus civil law-related matters, and representing the people of the state of Illinois through his criminal prosecutors. The state’s attorney of McHenry County is supported by 32 assistant state’s attorneys and staff. The skill set needed to effectively manage and guide many attorneys exceeds merely being a criminal prosecutor. Dan Regna’s abilities, diversified experience and being a longtime resident of McHenry County gives him not only the capability of effectively overseeing all functions of the state’s attorney’s office, but to do so with compassion for the law-abiding residents of McHenry County. As a 45-year resident and practicing attorney, I urge you to vote for Dan Regna for McHenry County state’s attorney.

25 years of experience. Nancy has many years of public service – four years as a Nunda Township planning commissioner and co-author of the first Nunda Township Comprehensive Land Use Plan, plus eight years on the District 47 School Board, providing oversight of an $85 million budget. Nancy knows the most impactful way the County Board can alleviate your tax burden is to promote economic growth. This includes providing adequate transportation corridors to provide the free flow of enterprise. Nancy is passionate about ensuring that McHenry County remains beautiful and protecting our precious groundwater. This is important because all of McHenry County’s water supply comes from the ground. Please vote March 15 for Nancy Gonsiorek. She will work hard for you and your business.
