kdahlstrom@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – A Crystal Lake police officer shot a man early Monday morning who was suspected in a domestic violence incident after police said the man charged the officer with a knife. Sources confirmed the injured suspect is 29-yearold Joseph A. Laudicina, who police said was taken to an area hospital Joseph A. and treated for a Laudicina gunshot wound. Neither hospital officials nor police would comment on the nature of his injuries.
Laudicina has not been charged with any wrongdoing, but could face criminal charges when released from the hospital. Crystal Lake police put out a statement Monday afternoon saying the incident is being investigated by the Illinois State Police and they would not be releasing any more information Monday. The incident began about 11:10 p.m. Sunday when Crystal Lake police officers responded to a domestic battery at a home in the 300
block of West Terra Cotta Avenue, or Route 176. Witnesses told officers Laudicina had battered an adult female family member, and threatened her with a knife, Crystal Lake police said in a news release. The man left the scene before officers arrived, authorities said. The woman was treated at the scene for injuries to her face, according to the release. Then early Monday morning, Crystal Lake police officers responded to a single-family home in the 800 block of Boxwood Drive for a report of an “unwanted subject,” officials said. They responded about 1:35 a.m. A preliminary investigation indicated the suspect entered the Boxwood Drive home against the wishes of the occupants, including the female victim from the earlier incident, according to the news re-
lease. The first officer at the scene on Boxwood Drive entered the home after hearing distress calls from inside, according to the release. The male officer was allegedly confronted by Laudicina, who was armed with a knife and charged the officer, authorities said. The officer then fired his weapon, hitting the suspect at least once, according to the release. As a precaution, the police officer was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was treated and released, according to the release. Authorities would not release the name of the officer, who has been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in officer-involved shootings. The incident remains under

Mississippi, Tennessee rethinking Confederate flag after attack S.C. Gov. Haley calls for removing symbol from Capitol grounds The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHARLESTON, S.C. – South Carolina’s governor declared Monday that the Confederate flag should be removed from the Statehouse grounds as she acknowledged that its use as a symbol of hatred by the man accused of killing nine black church members has made it too divisive to display in such a public space. Gov. Nikki Haley’s aboutface comes just days after authorities charged Dylann Storm Roof, 21, with murder. The white man appeared in photos waving Confederate

Survivors told police he hurled racial insults during the attack. “The murderer now locked up in Charleston said he hoped his actions would start a race war. We have an opportunity to show that not
only was he wrong, but that just the opposite is happening,” Haley said, flanked by Democrats and Republicans, blacks and whites who joined her call. “My hope is that by removing a symbol that divides us, we can move our state forward in harmony, and we can honor the nine blessed souls who are now in Heaven,” Haley said. The massacre inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church has suddenly made removing the flag – long thought politically impossible in South Carolina – the go-to position, even for
conservative Republican politicians. Haley was flanked by Republican U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, now running for president, as well as South Carolina’s junior Republican senator, Tim Scott, and Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn, both of whom are black. Within moments, her call was echoed by the Republican Party chairman and the top GOP lawmaker, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The governor’s declarations sparked action in other arenas as well on Monday:
