Village seeks use for its land

ALGONQUIN RESIDENTIAL PROJECT 10 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Lakewood looks to turn Village Hall into restaurant By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com

LAKEWOOD – A “destination restaurant” could replace the Lakewood Village Hall, at least that’s what village officials are shooting for. The village hired Master’s Restaurant Group this time last year for $14,750 to look at what’s offered in the county and region, find a concept for the property and engage an architecture firm to put together renderings and potential layouts. The renderings were released by the village this week in an effort to answer some questions that have been milling around the 3,810-population village and to raise interest among potential investors or purchasers. They show a classic Italianate building from the front through the back of the building which features floor-toceiling glass windows looking out onto Crystal Lake with a patio and dock. The renderings of the inside show dining rooms with exposed wood beams and modern light fixtures interchanged with antler chandeliers, depending on the room. “This isn’t a final design,” Village Manager Catherine Peterson said. “This is a concept.” The goal is to give potential investors or buyers – Master’s Restaurant Group could

The 63-unit luxury residential building, which aims to be the energizing centerpiece of Algonquin’s downtown redevelopment, was officially opened and celebrated Thursday.

New luxury apartments celebrate grand opening By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com ALGONQUIN – It’s been more than a decade in the making, but Riverside Plaza in Algonquin is done.

The mixed-used building, including 63 luxury apartments and forthcoming retail on the first floor, was celebrated Thursday with a grand opening ceremony – the end of a long, and at times rocky, road during the past 10 years on which

the development process began, stopped and started again. The four-story building is at 1 N. Main St. in Algonquin, next to Port Edward restaurant. The village’s Community Development Director Russ Farnum said

the project’s completion brings a great sense of relief. “For a long time that building was a big embarrassment for the village, just standing half-finished

McHENRY – When the Tampa Bay Lightning announced they were prohibiting Blackhawks gear in certain areas of their arena for the first game of the Stanley Cup Final, Bob Winter wanted to find a solution to the problem. The partner and executive creative director at VSA Partners, a branding and marketing firm in Chicago, asked VSA senior designer Steev Szafranski to help. exercise in how do you make a Blackhawks shirt when someone tells you it can’t be a Blackhawks shirt,” he said. The T-shirt reads “Let’s go,” and has a censor bar over the space that would read “Blackhawks.” Under the censor bar it reads: “Hockey team from the Midwest with a logo that has a guy with feathers in his hair whose name rhymes with Smackhawks.” About 500 shirts were initially sold for $22 from Strange Cargo Tees, 3448 N. Clark St., Chicago, Winter said. A portion of the profits benefit Blackhawks Charities.

Winter said the shirts were sold by the Blackhawks at the United Center for Wednesday’s game, as well as the Blackhawks Store, 333 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, and at strangecargo.com. Szafranski said the design was successful partially because of “the simplicity of just getting to the point of how ludicrous the thing is with the big censorship bar.” The shirt “was basically our little way of coping with a difficult situation,” Winter said. “We found a sort of silly solution to the thing that just made us smile about it all.”
