The two-week early voting period before the March 18 primary begins Monday at 10 locations throughout McHenry County. You can cast your ballot at any of them, not just the one closest to you, through March 15. McHenry County voters this year will elect all statewide constitutional offices, a U.S. Senate seat, all seats in the U.S. and state Houses of Representatives, one Illinois Senate seat, four countywide offices and half the County Board. Winners of the primary will run
in the Nov. 4 midterm election. Voters March 18 also will decide the fate of a number of referendums and elect their local precinct committeemen. Both races for Illinois governor are contested. Republicans will settle a four-way race among Bruce Rauner, Kirk Dillard, Bill Brady and Dan Rutherford, while incumbent Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn faces a long-shot challenge by Chicago anti-violence advocate Tio Hardiman. Former Illinois House Minority Leader Tom Cross and Bob Grogan are

U.S.: Putin’s move could be costly to Russia By LARA JAKES The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Western powers on Sunday prepared a tough response to Russia’s military advance into Ukraine and warned that Moscow could face economic penalties, diplomatic isolation and bolstered allied defenses in Europe unless it retreats. CRYSTAL LAKE – State Sen. Pamela Althoff has introduced legislation to prevent disputes over zoning authority between school districts and municipalities in hopes of avoiding situations similar to the court battle between District 155 and Crystal Lake. A l t h o f f , State Sen. R - M c H e n r y , Pam Althoff wants to solidify city zoning authority over school districts as her bill states a “a school district is subject to and its school board must comply with any valid local government zoning ordinance or resolu-
tion that applies where the pertinent part of the school district is located.” Her legislation has already passed through the education committee with unanimous bipartisan support on a 13-0 vote and it could be voted on in the full Senate on Tuesday. Althoff said after Community High School District 155 and Crystal Lake became embroiled in a court battle over the legality of the $1.1 million bleacher expansion at the Crystal Lake South High School stadium, she saw examples of similar disputes had been popping up throughout the state in recent years. She said she believes the school code as written could cause confusion because it
