ILLINOIS GOVERNOR | REPUBLICAN

Rauner takes GOP nomination The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner won the GOP primary Tuesday in his bid for Illinois governor, as voters embraced a first campaign by the multimillionaire who flooded the airwaves with vows to run the Democratic stronghold like a business and curb the influence of government unions. With Republicans eyeing what they view as their best shot in years to win the top job in President Barack

Obama’s home state, Rauner defeated three longtime state lawmakers – including the current state treasurer. He advances to a November matchup with Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, who easily won his nomination for a secBruce ond full term. “ T h e v o t e r s a r e Rauner going to face a stark choice in November, a major decision about the future of our state,” Raun-

er said in his victory speech. “It’s a choice between failure of the past and a new day.” Between Quinn and predecessor Rod Blagojevich, now imprisoned for corruption, Democrats have held the governorship since 2003. But Rauner could present a serious threat, partly due to a massive campaign bank account that already includes more than $6 million of his own money. For voters across Illinois, the governor’s race represented a potentially

transformative battle over union influence, with some voters saying they wanted to break an alliance between organized labor and Democrats, who have long controlled most statewide offices and the Legislature. Organized labor battled back out of concern that Rauner could seek to weaken unions in the same way GOP governors have in other states across the Midwest. Rauner says he would model his

It was a close race for the Republican nomination for McHenry County Sheriff, with Bill Prim coming out on top, though his opponent didn’t concede late Tuesday. Less than 100 votes separated Prim from Undersheriff Andrew Zinke after early and absentee votes were counted. Prim garnered 14,516 votes to Zinke’s 14,418. But Zinke, who has been undersheriff since 2010, said he wasn’t giving up. “It’s still too close to concede,” Zinke said just before midnight Tuesday. “We have to wait for ev-

ery vote to be counted.” County Clerk Katherine Schultz said there still were 47 outstanding absentee ballots to be counted, not enough to change the outcome. Schultz didn’t have a count on the number of provisional ballots, but said there typically are not very many. About 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, Prim declared victory in front of his supAndrew porters gathered at Pinecrest Golf Zinke Club in Huntley. He declined to be interviewed by the Northwest Herald, and instead released a statement through his spokesman:

“I’m extremely pleased at today’s results. I’m grateful to all the men and women who have exerted themselves above and beyond the call of duty these past 18 months. The victory is theirs. I know we have more hills to climb. I’m very glad to be at the top of this one.” His election night victory will usher in a new era at the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. He pulled it off without much support from the party establishment. Zinke had endorsements from nearly every local Republican elected official including mayors and state representatives. He also had support
