Veugeler, streets supervisor for Crystal Lake, deployed multiple dumpster trucks Wednesday to clear storm drains, streets and sidewalks ahead of potentially damaging rainstorm Thursday that could cause flooding throughout areas of the county. The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Wednesday warning of a “powerhouse storm system” that could include rain, freezing rain, snow, thunder, sleet, ice and 50 mph wind gusts.

Illinois lawmakers are considering a bill that would add an excise tax to soda. The state would use the revenue to create an “obesity fund” that would help to “diminish the human and economic costs of obesity,” according to the proposed amendment. By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com Local lawmakers had some harsh words about a proposed bill that would impose a tax on sugary beverages. The bill, introduced in Springfield on Wednesday, calls for a penny-per-ounce excise tax, which would raise an estimated $600 million for prevention and health care, according to the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity.

With little debate, the McHenry County Board filled the last vacancy on a Mental Health Board that has undergone reform and change. The County Board voted Tuesday to appoint attorney Sam Melei to the Mental Health Board, bringing it back to a full nine members for the first time in more than eight months.

For 35 area wrestlers, the goal of having a place on the awards podium at the state individual finals still is alive. The three-day tournament begins Thursday. Six area wrestlers received seeds. Democrats to present a counter plan, the GOP lawmakers announced their list of demands Wednesday at a Capitol news conference. Earlier this week, Democratic Senate President John Cullerton warned of a $3 billion budget hole next year. That includes a $1.6 billion revenue dip if the state’s temporary income tax increase expires as scheduled in January 2015, as well as about $1.3 billion in increased costs to required programs and services.
