MCCD aims to protect snakes Survey, head-start program helping species in danger By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com WONDER LAKE – The snakes are a bright green color and tiny with heads the size of a pinky fingernail. McHenry County Conservation District wildlife ecologist Cindi Jablonski didn’t have much experience handling snakes when she first got involved in the district’s smooth green snake survey and head-starting program. “If people could just see one of these green snakes – they are so beautiful,” she said. Development of the prairies and marshes that the snakes call home, plus the use of pesticides, have pushed the snakes onto the state’s list of species in greatest need of conservation, and so in 2013, the district’s

JOHNSBURG – Several young adults were scattered throughout a large dining room Thursday, heads down as they talked on cellphones and tablets. These particular young people were taking a rare opportunity to talk to family members they hadn’t had contact with in five weeks. Clad in beige and black, the roughly 42 naval recruits were spending a day away from training at the Great Lakes Naval base as guests of the McHenry Moose Lodge 691, which provided food, fun and entertainment.

We want to help these kids, to thank them for what they’re doing for us.”
