Defense wants interview tossed
McHenry-area man accused of killing ex-girlfriend, hiding her body in sealed room By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – The defense attorney for a McHenry-area man accused of murdering his former girlfriend has asked a judge to bar statements he made to authorities from his trial. William J. Ross, 64, was arrested in November 2013 in Las
Vegas. He first was charged with concealing the death of 49-yearold Jacqueline Schaefer, and later charged with her homicide. Authorities said Schaefer was shot in September 2011, and her remains went undiscovered for two years. Ross has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in custody of the McHenry County Jail in lieu of $5 million bond. A trial date
has not been set. He was living in a motel in Las Vegas at the time of his arrest, and spoke with detectives there as well as investigators from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office. Although Ross made no admissions of guilt during the interviews, they were revealing. Authorities allege that after Ross killed Schaefer, he went to great
lengths to seal the bedroom where her remains eventually were found. He nailed and screwed both the windows and doors, he caulked the edges and painted over it, according to a transcription of the Las Vegas interview attached to his case file. A woman who was watching over Ross’ home at 518 Country Club Road in the McHenry area
found the badly decomposed remains in November 2013. That woman reportedly lived in a second home Ross owned down the street and promised to look after the property where the remains were found. She told police that Ross told her never to enter the room where

GRIMOLDBY editorial@nwherald.com CRYSTAL LAKE – If you’ve lived in the Crystal Lake area for a while, you’ve probably met, or at least know of, Bob and Rosemary Blazier. They are well-known – and loved – for what they’ve done. “[Bob] and Rosemary have been involved with starting, participat-
ing and expanding literally over 40 organizations in McHenry County,” said Kathleen Caldwell, chairwoman of the Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce Foundation. “They get in, they have a vision, they start [the organization], they get involved in a leadership team and then they advocate on behalf of the organization. ... It’s amazing, really amazing.” Bob Blazier is a former superintendent of Crystal Lake Community Consolidated School District 47, a former Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce president and a former vice president of marketing and education for Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry (now Centegra

CARY – Weeks after losing an appeal regarding lot coverage calculations, Pedcor Industries has submitted a modified site plan for its proposed affordable housing complex in an attempt to comply with village ordinance. Village officials received the plan Tuesday afternoon, Village Administrator Chris Clark said, and are in the process of checking the calculations provided by Pedcor to make sure they are correct. If the plan is found to be in compliance, building permits for the complex could be issued by the end of the year, Clark said. “Obviously, this has been a project that’s taken some time to get to a possible construction stage,” Clark said. “The parties worked together to identify an approach that complied with village ordinance, which was essentially the direction of the Board of Zoning, Planning and Appeals.” The controversial Garden Place Apartments project at First and Pearl streets was approved by a 4-2 vote of the Village Board in June 2014, but after a delay in the permit process, village officials discovered a miscalculation in lot coverage that required the company to file a variance request. In August, the zoning board voted against a variance that would allow the project to increase lot coverage from the usual 45 percent to 55 percent. An October appeal of the initial staff
