President’s Message

Melissa Hernandez President Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce

NKCC, Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce, is a regional chamber serving the communities of Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Sleepy Hollow and West Dundee. Having worked for the chamber for the past 10 years, I have witnessed the business landscape has change significantly. Online shopping, social media engagement and other web-based interactions have deprived us of the personal relationships and dedicated attention that used to accompany our business transactions. In the midst of these changes, chambers have struggled to find relevance, competing with busy schedules and a myriad of networking opportunities and choices. Some question whether chambers are relevant or necessary today. Here is my answer.

Chambers offer the business community a place to come together and share ideas, make new connections and expand their contact base. Networking opportunities are offered in a variety of formats and at a variety of times to suit varying schedules.

In addition, chambers offer educational seminars and professional development on relevant topics such as marketing, finance, social media and tools to help the small business owner with limited resources succeed.

In addition to educational and networking opportunities, chambers offer access and advocacy with local government. The NKCC works closely with Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Sleepy Hollow and West Dundee through community events and other local initiatives to promote shopping local businesses. Rise and Shine events were designed for businesses to have access to village leaders to address questions and concerns. They are hosted on a rotating schedule throughout the year at each participating municipality.

Our chamber’s board of directors, representing a wide range of businesses in our community, work hard to make sure the chamber stays relevant, accessible and progressive. Their commitment and dedication has helped NKCC to be viable and dynamic for more than 35 years.

Strong businesses make strong communities. The chamber understands that. We work with area service organizations and clubs to clean up our community and make it a better place to live. The NKCC participates in local food drives, local Habitat for Humanity projects, the local Rotary clubs, and the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township to name a few. We truly believe that when we all work together, we all win by making the Northern Kane County region a wonderful place to live, shop and do business!

Village of Gilberts

I

ncorporated in 1890, Gilberts grew up around a train station on the regional rail line. The village population was reported as 5,747 in 2005.

Gilberts Elementary School is the primary destination for the village’s youngsters to begin their public school education. Students in Gilberts stay within Community Unit School District 300 as they move up to Hampshire Middle School and then Hampshire High School, where athletes are known as the “Whip-Purs.” Sonshine Christian Preschool also serves the Gilberts community.

Shop specializes in fireplaces, gas logs and gas grills. 4Athletes fitness focuses on helping customers achieve athletic and health goals. Utopian Farm Mushrooms is a family-run operation selling locally grown mushrooms. For food options, there’s Cruisin’ bar and restaurant, Hacienda De Los Perez Mexican Grill, Pub 72 and Rosati’s Pizza.

Several Christian churches call Gilberts home. Dating to 1887, St. Peter Lutheran Church is a longtime institution in the village. St. Mary Catholic Church, which dates to the 1800s, is associated with St. Catherine of Siena in West Dundee. Fellowship Life Bible Church is a newer congregation that meets at the elementary school.

When it comes to hospitals, Gilberts residents are likely going to head to Elgin. Advocate Sherman Hospital’s new campus opened in 2009 and has 255 beds, while Presence Saint Joseph Hospital dates to 1902 and has 184 beds. Move! Village of Carpentersville

I

ncorporated in 1894, Carpentersville today is the largest community in Dundee County with a population of 38,291 as of 2016.

Younger children in Carpentersville are split between District 220’s Sunny Hill Elementary School and District 300’s Dundee Highlands, Golfview, Lakewood, Liberty, Parkview, Meadowdale and Westfield elementary schools. Prairie and Station middle schools are the next steps in District 220, along with Carpentersville and Dundee middle schools in District 300. At the high school level, there’s Barrington High School in D-220 and Dundee-Crown, Hampshire and Jacobs high schools in D-300.

For hospitalization needs, Carpentersville residents are most likely to head to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, which was relaunched in 2009 with a new 255-bed campus. Another option is Presence Saint Joseph in Elgin, which opened in 1902 and has 184 beds.

The Wellness and Nutrition Center offers chiropractic and dietary services.

Along with close proximity to the Spring Hill Mall, Carpentersville has quite a bit of retail of its own. Businesses in the village include Village Fresh Market, Main Street Bicycles, El Paraiso Furniture and Arturo’s Jewelry. Ziegler’s Ace provides hardware and home improvement supplies from the Meadowdale Shopping Center. Fox River Spa and Salon is a 3,000-square-foot space devoted to beautification and relaxation.

The village boasts more than a dozen churches, with notable houses of worship including Faith Lutheran Church, St. Monica’s Catholic Church and Faithwalk Harvest Church. The Sant Nirankari Mission is tied to the spiritual movement that originated in India.

Village of East Dundee

N

amed after a town in Scotland, East Dundee was incorporated in 1871. The village had a population of 2,860 in 2010.

Northern Kitchen & Bath sells to both homeowners and trade professionals. Complete Bridal offers bridal gowns, bridesmaid dresses, mom’s, prom and pageant dresses. The Uncommon Palate is a specialty grocery store with locally sourced food products.

Elementary age children in East Dundee who enter public schools will likely attend District 300’s Lakewood or Parkview elementary schools in nearby Carpentersville.

At the middle school level, Carpentersville Middle School is the most common destination, and in high school most will go to Dundee-Crown. Another option is Immanuel Lutheran School for students from preschool to eighth grade.

Located right in the heart of downtown East Dundee, Immanuel Lutheran Church is a local institution, claiming a congregation of more than 2,200 members. Fox Valley Baptist Church has been welcoming congregants since 1963. Just across the Fox River in West Dundee are a number of other worship options.

Along with close access to Advocate Sherman Hospital and Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, East Dundee has a number of medical resources in town. Fox Valley Care Centers, 7Hills Healthcare Center and Northwest Health Care Associates serve patients of all ages, while Hopscotch and Kid Care Medical are focused on children. Neu Family Dental offers oral care to patients, and the Center for Chiropractic & Natural Medicine focuses on chronic pain issues.

West Dundee has a pair of notable retail centers, its downtown and the Spring Hill Mall. Downtown retailers include Lady Bug Lane boutique, Shelley’s Bridal Couture and Bob’s Trading Post. Anchor retailers at Spring Hill Mall include Kohl’s, Sears, Macy’s and Carson Pirie Scott.

Incorporated in 1887, West Dundee is nestled along the west bank of the Fox River in northern Kane County.

The village had a recorded population of 7,331 in the 2010 census.

West Dundee is served by Community Unit School District 300. Many West Dundee residents start out at Dundee Highlands Elementary School before moving on to Dundee Middle School. High school students mostly go to Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville.

Other educational options include the Children’s House Montessori School and St. Catherine Catholic School.

A number of Christian denominations call West Dundee home.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church’s church dates to 1909. First Congregational Church marked its 175 anniversary in 2016. Other local churches of note include First United Methodist Church, St. Catherine of Siena Church and St. James Episcopal Church.

Residents of West Dundee have just a short trip to access two high quality hospitals in their area. Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin opened a new, 255-bed facility in December 2009. Village of Sleepy Hollow

S

leepy Hollow builds a thriving community for residents and visitors

Incorporated in 1958, Sleepy Hollow began its life as a carefully planned community designed to be more hospitable than the typical suburb.

It’s population was estimated at 3,695 in 2005. A community garden project helps residents gather their own locally grown vegetables, and the Giving Garden supports area food pantries.

Historically, Sleepy Hollow was strictly a bedroom community, but in recent years a small number of businesses have launched in the village. Randy’s Vegetables Farm Stand sells flowers and produce during the warmer months. Retail stores include Advance Auto Parts and Verlo Mattress. Eateries include Rosati’s Pizza and Salsa Street Mexican Restaurant and Cantina.

Twin Oaks Baptist Church, which was founded more than 40 years ago, is based in Sleepy Hollow, and the surrounding communities host Christian churches of a variety of denominations, including Lutheran, Greek Orthodox and Methodist churches.

Sleepy Hollow Elementary School is part of Community Unit School District 300. Students generally go on to Dundee Middle School in West Dundee and then Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville or Jacobs High School in Algonquin. Sleepy Hollow KinderCare offers programs for infants to 12-year-olds.

There are two local hospitals in nearby Elgin, Advocate Sherman Hospital and Presence Saint Joseph Hospital. Advocate launched a new campus in 2009 and has 255 beds. St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Fireworks

Sleepy Hollow 4th of July Celebration

East Dundee is the site for the 11th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 10; 11 a.m. Spectators can celebrate Irish tradition with leprechauns, bagpipe players; floats and marching units. The parade is only the beginning to a festive week that includes food, music and fun as East Dundee merchants, restaurateurs and friends welcome visitors for this special community celebration. The week concludes with fireworks on the Fox River; Saturday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by Bandito Barney’s in East Dundee, the annual parade and fireworks are coordinated

Sabatino Park in Sleepy Hollow is the place to be each year on the Fourth of July. The Sleepy Hollow Service Club of Illinois annually provides a full day of festivities including a one-mile fun run, fishing derby, pie eating contest, car show, entertainment by local bands, parade (11:30 a.m.), food and raffle. August 2018 Rock the Fox Music Fest Carpenter Park in Old Towne Carpentersville The 2018 Oddfellows Rock The Fox Music Fest is not only a music fest it’s also a Food Fest! The Fest kicks off on a Friday evening and runs all weekend in the beautiful historic Carpenter Park in Carpentersville.

June 1 – June 3, 2018 Gilberts Community Days Free three-day community festival held the weekend after Memorial Day. This is the sixth annual Community Days festival and will take place in Town Square Park, 195 Jackson Street. The festival offers entertainment for all ages including live bands, a wide variety of food and drink options, as well as a car show to conclude the weekend. Those in attendance will find an assortment of rides and games provided by Windy City Amusements along with a children’s tent, a petting zoo and magic show. Town Square Park is located near the intersection of Route 72 and Center Drive in Gilberts.

Heritage Fest, now in its 20th year, is a free threeday outdoor community festival held each September in downtown Dundee. Heritage Fest offers something for all ages, including live entertainment on three stages, fireworks, car show, craft and antique fairs, carnival, games for kids and adults, fitness workshops, a broad menu of food and drink options, and more. In the tradition of Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”, downtown Dundee comes to life during the first weekend in December in a Victorian Christmas celebration with smalltown ambiance. Friday night festivities include tree lighting ceremonies, cocoa and an opportunity to meet with Santa.

Create memories as you view live portrayals of Christmas scenes in the merchant storefronts along Main and River streets, adorned with white, twinkling lights. The “Spirit of Christmas” Parade steps off on Saturday at 10 a.m. and features community organizations and performance groups, and of course, Santa Claus himself. Make a day of it, and enjoy a variety of activities for all ages, including the opportunity to decorate your own gingerbread house, craft sales, bake sales and other activities at area churches, a petting zoo, carriage rides and more. October 27, 2018 Halloween in the Hollow There aren’t many events where you get to see the famed Headless Horseman from Washington Irving’s classic tale, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”. But ever since the early 1970s, Sleepy Hollow has taken its name to heart once a year for a big Halloween event at Sabatino Park. The buildup for this event actually starts a month in advance when the Village opens up the park so that residents can pile up their branches and other yard waste into a huge pile (which becomes a bonfire at the fest). The evening’s festivities, which start at 3 p.m. with a chili contest, include food sales, a costume parade and contest, pumpkin carving and hayrides.

The day culminates with the lighting of the huge bonfire at 6 p.m. and the appearance of the “headless horseman” riding in on a majestic horse, to the delight of the large crowd. The fest is sponsored by the Sleepy Hollow Service Club of Illinois.

hen pet owners hand over their beloved family members for boarding, grooming or training, they want to know that their critter is going to be well taken care of. Easing that concern is a priority for Stacy Pyrek of Four Legs Pets.

Four Legs Pets started as an in-home pet-sitting business in 2004 before opening a storefront in Algonquin in 2006, followed by the Gilberts location in 2010. That steady growth is not at an end, as Pyrek envisions more ways that the business can help area pet owners.

“We care for their pets like they are our own,” Pyrek said. “All of our clients are like family to us, and we are proud of the fact that so many people entrust us not only with their pets, but coming into their homes as well.”

illis, Shirley and son Chris Johnson have been in the motion picture exhibition business for nearly 40 years. Classic Cinemas is an independent family-owned theater operation that began operation August 1978 with one theater, Tivoli in Downers Grove.

Main Street Bicycles keeps clients rolling along

M

ain Street Bicycles in Carpentersville has a great selling point in its favor - if you’ve just bought a bike from them, or had one repaired, you can try it out immediately on the nearby Fox River Trail.

In fact, according to owner Jeff Provisor, having the bike path nearby was one of the key reasons why he chose the store’s location.

“Proximity to the bike path, a fantastic retail space, and distance from competition at the time,” were the key factors when the story moved to its current spot in 2010, Provisor said. The store originally opened in a smaller space nearby in 2004.

Main Street Bicycles offers the services you would expect, such as selling new and used bikes, bicycle parts and accessories, bike rentals and bike repairs. Provisor also sees himself as something of an evangelist for bicycling, supporting organizations such as Chicago Area Mountain Bikers that build off-road trails in local woods and parks.

His favorite experience as a store owner, he says, is the moment when someone gets on a bike for the first time or after a long hiatus.

“I have seen repeated time and time again ... when they pedal a bike for the first time, the first time in a long time, or maybe it is the first bike that fits them and actually moves with ease as they should,” Provisor said.

“That makes me smile every time.”

To achieve that kind of reaction from customers takes more than just lining up a bunch of bikes and putting prices on them.

“We are a throwback retail store that strives for a great experience,” Provisor said. “We provide knowledge and expertise to help the customer make the best decision in a sport we both are passionate about.”

The Dundee Township Park District doesn’t quite have a park or facility for every letter of the alphabet, but it comes pretty close. From Aldis Park to White Oaks Park, there are more than 30 parks, forest preserves, recreational centers and other attractions to keep Carpentersville and Dundeearea residents occupied.

Bonnie Dundee Golf Club 270 Kennedy Drive, Carpentersville. This 18-hole course dates to the 1920s. Rates range from $15 to $46. A number of tournaments are held throughout the year, and residents can reserve the course for group outings, as well.

Dolphin Cove Family Aquatic Center 300 N. Kennedy Drive, Carpentersville. Open in the summertime, this community water park features slides, a giant pool, beach area and plenty of lounge chairs. Concession stands and picnic tables make it a good option for summertime meals, too.

Huffman Park 811 Tartans Drive, West Dundee: This 12-acre park features a baseball diamond, basketball court, playground, skate plaza, soccer field, tennis courts, splash pad and more.

Kemper ParK Wren Road and Sparrow Road, Carpentersville. Comprising 20 acres, this park includes a natural wooded area, baseball field, playground and soccer field.

Raceway Woods

offers a leafy welcome to bicyclists

Whether your goal is to take in a scenic long-distance bike ride down the Fox River, tool around one of Kane County’s many charming villages, or get an intense mountain biking workout, there are plenty of options to indulge your bicycling needs.

Raceway Trail The key feature of Raceway Woods Forest Preserve in Carpentersville, Raceway Mountain Bike Trail follows what used to be the Meadowdale International race track.

The now-paved track is a focus of The Chicago Area Mountain Bikers, also known as CAMBr. With the oversight of the village of Carpentersville, CAMBr members work to clear brush and enhance existing features of the bike trail for the use of the group and the surrounding community.

CAMBr, through a Facebook group and other means, organizes regular workday events to keep the trail in good shape. The group also fundraises to pay for future improvements for features like jumps and downhill trails.

A map on the CAMBr website (CAMBr.org) of the Raceway Trail includes fanciful names for various sections of the trail, including Little Monza Trail, Silo HIll Trail, Corkscrew Trail and Serpentine Trail. One section, labeled “Scarab’s Revenge,” is marked as a “difficult section of trail” on the map.

CAMBr members monitor the conditions of Raceway Trail on a regular basis and share information via social media, both to help fellow cyclists best enjoy the trail, and also to keep the trails in good shape.

Raceway Woods Forest Preserve is a 112 acre plot of land about a mile north of Huntley Road. The preserve itself is jointly controlled 24 | NORTHERN KANE COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

by the Kane County Forest Preserve District and the Dundee Township Park District. There’s a horseback riding area and picnicking areas in addition to the bike trails.

Keith Andres Park Named after a Carpentersville resident killed in the Vietnam War, Andres park is home to a bike challenge course that is being maintained and improved by a local group of volunteers.

The 25-acre park includes a basketball court, playground and mountain bike skills area. There’s off-street parking available for visitors.

The Chicago Area Mountain Bikers group is leading efforts to improve the park’s biking features. The group’s efforts are documented on the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ AndresBikePark. There, CAMBr members have shared information on their work to build assorted hills and jumps that give mountain bikers chances to get some big air and encounter terrain that’s not commonly found in the Chicago area.

Cyclists can also get information from CAMBr as to the condition of the trail on Facebook to avoid poor biking conditions and prevent damage to the trail.

According to CAMBr, the park had been neglected for decades before the group signed an agreement with the village. The park was “used as an unauthorized dump and the scene of gang related activity,” according to the park’s Facebook page.

As CAMBr’s efforts to fix up the park bear fruit, the village is looking into adding more parking to accommodate the increase in usage and ease the impact of traffic on the surrounding neighborhood. The construction of restrooms is also under consideration by the village.

Fox RiveR TRail One of the landmark trails of the Chicago region, the Fox River Trail is a more than 40-mile course that traverses the eastern edge of Kane County from north to south. The route starts in Algonquin at the McHenry County line and concludes in Oswego in Kendall County - or vice versa.

The trail is ideal for bicycling, but it’s also used for hiking, cross-country skiing and jogging, among other uses.

Along its route, the trail winds past a number of cities and villages, including Carpentersville, East Dundee and West Dundee, Elgin and South Elgin, the Tri-Cities (St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia), North Aurora and Aurora.

As its name suggests, the trail follows and in some instances crosses the scenic Fox River. The Kane County Forest Preserve

District lists a number of their properties that are in close proximity to the trail, including Fox River Shores, Tyler Creek, Tekakwitha Woods, Fabyan Forest Preserve and more.

If fishing is your leisure activity of choice, the Fox River Trail connects many of the best fishing spots in Kane County. The river is known for bass, catfish and walleye.

The Fox River Trail connects with the Illinois Prairie Path, which goes east through DuPage County toward Chicago, near Aurora. Also in Aurora, the Virgil L. Gilman Trail heads west toward Montgomery.

At the northern end of the Fox River Trail in Algonquin, it connects with the Prairie Trail, which continues north toward Wisconsin.

puts children first

W

hen it comes to public education in northern Kane County, Community Unit School District 300 pretty much has it covered.

The sixth-largest school district in the state, CUSD 300 takes local children from preschool all the way to high school graduation in the villages of Carpentersville, East Dundee, Gilberts, Hampshire, Pingree Grove, Sleepy Hollow and West Dundee, not to mention portions of Algonquin, Barrington Hills, Cary, Hoffman Estates and Lake in the Hills.

It stretches beyond Kane County into slices of McHenry, DeKalb and Cook counties to serve about 21,000 students as of the 201718 school year. More than 1,200 teachers work for the district.

The roster of schools includes 16 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools (Dundee-Crown, Hampshire and Jacobs) one preschool, one alternative school and one charter school.

For families in need, the district supports the District 300 Food Pantry at Carpentersville Middle School (100 Cleveland Ave. Door 20, Carpentersville). The pantry is open every Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. to families that reside within the District 300 boundaries.

The nonprofit D300 Foundation works in concert with the school district to support educational activities not supported by tax dollars. The foundation initiated a Summer Theater Program that is now part of the district’s official curriculum. Other events include the annual golf outing and the Cultural Arts on the Fox event, for which students submit artworks.

The three high schools are each noted for their athletic accomplishments:

Dundee-Crown High School Located at 1500 Kings Road in Carpentersville, D-C was formed by the combination of the Dundee High School and Irving Crown High School in 1983. With a listed enrollment of 2,476, the school serves Carpentersville, East Dundee, West Dundee, Sleepy Hollow, Hampshire, Algonquin, Gilberts and Cary.

The Chargers boys basketball team finished an impressive fourth in the state of Illinois in its class in the 2008-09 school year, and the boys wrestling team did the same in 2003-04. The girls basketball team has seen a great deal of postseason success in recent seasons.

Hampshire High School Situated at 1600 Big Timber Road in Hampshire, the school’s athletic teams enjoy the unique moniker of “WhipPurs,” a reference to their white and purple color scheme.

Completed in 2008, the high school is one of the newest structures in the school district.

The school has a listed enrollment of 1,588.

The Hampshire football team has earned three state titles in football, in 1976-77, 1979-80 and 1995-96. They also earned a state title in cheerleading in 2014-15. The school has also seen state tournament appearances in girls volleyball and girls soccer in the past decade.

Jacobs High School Based in Algonquin, Jacobs is at 2601 Bunker Hill Drive and also serves students in Lake in the Hills, Dundee, Carpentersville, Gilberts, Hampshire, Sleepy Hollow, Barrington Hills, Cary, Fox River Grove and Pingree Grove.

Listed enrollment is 2,122.

The Jacobs baseball team, the Golden Eagles, came in third in their class in the 2013-14 school year. The boys basketball, soccer and tennis teams have seen a fair amount of success in recent years.

esidents in the Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce region have access to a wide variety of health care options, from blue-ribbon medical centers to specialized practices. Centegra Health System has hospitals in McHenry, Huntley and Woodstock, as well as Immediate Care Centers and other specialized centers to better serve the health needs of the community.

Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin is part of Advocate Health Care, the largest health system in Illinois, and earned Magnet recognition for nursing excellence. Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, also in Elgin, was founded in 1902 and offers a nationally recognized cardiac program, and accredited regional cancer care center. Chiropractic services are offered by Active Medical Center, Center for Chiropractic Medicine, Londos Family Chiropractic and Silberfine Chiropractic Center. When it’s time to look for dental practices, Midwest Dental, Neu Family Dental, Randall Oaks Dental and Schwarz Orthodontics are ready to help.
