OF ‘THE AMAZING RACE’ ON CBS
With “The Amazing Race” now in its 33rd season, what keeps you coming back?
When we started 20 years ago, it was mind-blowing. And I would not believe that we would still be here 20 years later, with a show that feels as fresh as the day we started it. It’s never the same. I think if I was doing a studio show and I was going in and doing the same thing over and over again, rinsing and repeating the same format over and over again, I would definitely have gotten stale on the idea. “The Amazing Race” never feels that way. It feels, honestly, maybe more relevant today. It was groundbreaking 20 years ago, and I still think it’s continuing to push boundaries all these years later. And I just love being a part of something that the audience has resonated with. Production on Season 33 was interrupted for a year by the coronavirus pandemic. How did you find resuming the race so much later?
We had challenges, and I think we adapted and we’ve come back with some new elements, just because we’ve freshened up some of the ways we’ve done things. Certainly, (those involved) the plane (we used) and knowing that everybody was safe. It was a very comfortable plane. It was nice. We didn’t have long lines to stand in and all those things that you don’t see on the show, but that are very taxing on all of us. It was a welcome change, actually. You live, you learn, you adapt, and you try to make the best of the situation. I can promise you that this season, it’s a special one.
‘Law & Order’ returns, with Camryn Manheim on board
What’s your assessment of the teams in Season 33?
You know, we have some very special teams this season. Some of them have made some headlines in the world. We’re always looking for unique teams, and I would say definitely this season, you’re going to be fully entertained. No matter how good the challenges are, no matter how well we shoot, no matter what we do, if we don’t have good teams, we don’t have a good show.
