Newton Parks hosts series of summer events Maytag Pool now open, concert series begins Thursday By Kate Malott Newton Daily News With school out for summer and longer days ahead, the Newton Parks and Recreation Department has developed a series of summer events to entertain its community members. Maytag Pool The Maytag Pool will be open to the public at 1 p.m. Friday. Lap swim will be available from noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Open swim hours are 1 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 1 to 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Maytag Pool lifeguards will offer swimming lessons this summer from July 6 to July 17. Lesson are 45 minutes, fees are $30 and will begin at 10:15 and 11:15 a.m. To register, visit the park office at 3000 N. Fourth Ave. E. or call 641-792-1470. Movie in the Park New this summer is the addition of Movie in the Park, free showings of family-friendly movies at the Maytag Bowl. There are two movies on the
A new location with several new vendors will greet community members at the kick off to the Newton Farmers’ Market Tuesday. Now located downtown on the northwest side of the Jasper County Courthouse lawn, the market will run from 4 to 6 p.m. every Tuesday. As a special treat, a surprise guest will be on hand to start of the market, spreading cheer to kids and adults alike. The market has also found a new manager this year with Newton Main Street taking up the post. “The market is such a positive, family-friendly event,” Newton Main Street Executive Director Andrew Bassman said. “We think it’s a natural fit with our mission. And the courthouse lawn, with high visibility and large traffic volume
lineup of events this summer. “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” will show around 9 p.m. June 6 at the Maytag Bowl, 301. S. 11th Ave. W. in Newton, and “Goonies” at p.m. July 25 at the Maytag Bowl. These movies are free to the community. Teen Pool Party Another new event added to the schedule this year is a Teen Pool Party during Newton Fest. Teen Pool Party begins at 7 p.m. June 12 at the Maytag Pool. Music will be provided by Nick Hoskin’s D.J. Service and costs $5 per student.
“We wanted to give middle school students the opportunity to have their fun own event during this exciting new community-wide event. The event is open to students that were in middle school (seventh and eighth grades) for the 2014-2015 school year,” City of Newton Administrative Park Superintendent Nathan Unsworth said. School year ‘runs’ out
Interim Police Chief Rob Burdess will present the Crime-Free Housing program to the Newton City Council Monday. The program, which was requested by the council and has been in the works for several months, hopes to give more education and structure to both the landlords and tenants at apartment facilities. The Strategic Action Plan called for the reduction of crime in multiunit housing complexes and to improve the quality of Newton’s rental housing. The program is designed to COUNCIL | 8A

At its May 18 meeting, the Newton Community School District board heard and saw a presentation from its superintendent, Bob Callaghan, who is charged with assigning personnel for upcoming school years. Callaghan presented a detailed personnel report that spells out where many teachers, specialists and administrators are headed in 2015-16. Products available will include fresh produce, baked goods, barbecue and a wide array of arts and crafts. The Bluegrass group “Without a Doubt” will perform at Tuesday’s market with live musical acts being regularly featured through out the season. Along with the vendors, nonprofit groups will also have tables throughout the season, holding fundraisers or providing educational material. “The market will have a variety of products and activity,” Bassman said. “We hope everyone will be able to find something they enjoy at the market.”
