Introducing the Baxter Bolts Baxter CSD unveils new mascot, cleared for 8-man football By Mike Mendenhall Newton Daily News

Kayla Langmaid/Daily News The Salvation Army is nearing its yearly goal for its Red Kettle Campaign but is in need of bell ringers on Christmas Eve. Financial donations can also be mailed or made online.

BAXTER — After months of uncertainty following a departure from the 28-year CMB sports agreement, the Baxter Community School District’s announcement Thursday of the student body’s choice for a new mascot was “electrifying.” In a district-wide assembly with many Baxter citizens in attendance, staff announced that beginning in fall 2017 the school will be known as the Baxter Bolts. The new mascot and colors of purple, silver and black were unveiled in a video produced by Baxter CSD Technology Director Eric Padget. Set to the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” the video showed the four mascot finalist — Railriders, Bulls, Knights and Bolts — and slowly eliminated them one by one with each musical phrase. The music was accompanied with soaring rhetoric which read: “One era draws to a close, a new one opens. Your voices have been heard, your votes have been counted. Our future has been determined, and it’s just beginning. Our time is now ... Do you hear thunder?” BAXTER | 3A

Red Kettle Campaign nears fundraising goal

Bell ringers needed this holiday weekend By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News The Jasper County Salvation Army is continuing its efforts to reach the Red Kettle Campaign goal this holiday season. The Salvation Army is aiming to raise $35,500 just from the kettles campaign alone. The donated money goes toward maintaining programs throughout the year. Bell ringers began fundraising Nov. 18, and The Salvation Army has

reached 83 percent of its initial goal as of Thursday. Volunteers are still needed to ring bells this Christmas Eve. If bell ringers give a little bit of their time this holiday weekend, the salvation army’s goal could succeed the finish line. Major Mikey Carter said the number of donations sent through the mail or online have also been down as of late. Numbers aside, Carter said community members have been nothing but supportive

throughout the season of giving. “We’re really blessed to see some sharing of resources,” Carter said. “Its been a reminder of what its like to serve in this area — people are sacrificing their time.” Sometimes the sound of music can provide a little bit of encouragement for passerbys to donate. “Some folks respond to the bell and some folks, they respond to music,” Carter said. Carter said there have been a couple of music groups who have played and groups of carolers as well. “It really gets people’s attention to make

a donation and it might spark someone to get online and make a contribution,” she said. To volunteer as a bell ringer, call the Jasper County Salvation Army at 641-792-6131. Financial donations can be mailed or dropped off at 301 N. Second Ave. E. P.O. Box 337 or be made online. “We’re just really thankful we’ve been able to see straight support from individuals, groups, and clubs and other folks — we are grateful for that support,” Carter said. City extending partnership with Venture Homes By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News To keep housing the momentum going, the City of Newton has extended an agreement with Venture Homes to build in Fountain Hills Estates. The subdivision, located north of South 12th Avenue West, near Highway 14, has three homes completed and is currently finishing construction of a fourth. “Extending the agreement will ensure more houses will be built,” Newton Housing Development Cor-

poration Director Bruce Showalter said. “It’s starting to look like a very nice neig hb orhood. More houses will Showalter just make Fountain Hills better and a more desirable place to live.” Fountain Hills had previously sat dormant for nearly 20 years, when in March 2014, the city entered into

an agreement with the West Des Moines company to start building new homes. Since the city had not paid to acquire these lots through the tax sale process, they were pledged to Venture Homes at $1 each. “Fountain Hills is a good example of the City of Newton stepping in and taking something that has been a problem and unproductive for years and making it useful and attractive,” Showalter said. For almost three decades, HLW has provided those services and has an extensive history of the landfill to continue the work. “The personnel at HLW Group LLC have been working with the Newton Sanitary Landfill for 27 years and are very familiar with the geology, hydrology and cell construction of the landfill,” interim city administrator Jarrod Wellik said. “The City of Newton has been pleased with service HLW has provided.” LANDFILL | 3A
