By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News Like many 8-year-olds, Emerson Hough Elementary student Cameron Muhs wanted a toy for Christmas. The toy Cameron had in mind, however, was discontinued and seemingly unavailable. Cameron has autism and is non-verbal. To make lines of communication more open, Cameron’s mother, Sarah Muhs, obtained a device called Nova Chat with the help of Iowa company Talk To Me Technologies. Using his “talker,” Cameron spelled out what he wanted — Tetra Tops. Tetra Tops aren’t like regular spinning tops, they are more like a cluster of marbles glued together and a Tetra Top can spin on any of its sides. Sarah did a quick internet search for the toy and came up empty handed. That’s when Emerson Hough paraprofessional Angie Hashman stepped in to help. “It was Angie who kept at it,” Sarah Muhs said. “She sent emails to the company, to Duncan Toys. She researched

a lot on the internet. She found out who the inventor was, and she emailed him.” Eventually, someone from Duncan Toys responded with good news. Augie Fash, who is the leader of Team Duncan and is known for winning a national yo-yo championship in 2004, told Hashman

via email the company might have some Tetra Tops archived in a warehouse. “A few days later that week, this box shows up addressed to Angie,” Sarah said. “It had a handwritten note from Augie, saying ‘I hope Cameron enjoys these for Christmas.’” SURPRISE | 3A

Sub-freezing temperatures are not often welcomed with open arms — but one benefit to the winter weather comes by way of the community ice skating rink. The rink, located at Maytag Park, is being filled and city parks superintendent Nathan Unsworth said he expects it to be ready as soon as Thursday. “The water was freezing as we were pumping it into the Unsworth rink,” Unsworth said. “We got the first layer in Monday and are working on the final piece with expectations that it could be ready by mid-week.” City park employees started working on the rink in November, putting the walls up at its southwest corner location at the park. As the temperatures began to cooperate the last several weeks to freeze the ground, crews were finally able to place the lining and begin filling it with water. With the forecast showing temperatures perfect to maintain ice, it looks as though the rink will be up and running about a month earlier than its inaugural season last year. “It is a very successful project and hopefully the weather will cooperate and we can have a long skating season this year,” Unsworth said. The rink will run similarly to last year, with a system has been put into RINK | 3A

The Central Iowa Workforce Development regional board will be looking for a new representative from Jasper County come the new year. CIWD representative Angie Arthur requested a replacement for exiting Jasper County Supervisor Dennis Stevenson at the board of supervisors meeting on Tuesday. “I have been on this board a long time and one thing I know is the employers that are involved in it, they like the program. I think it has been successful,” Stevenson said. “They see the need to get people trained or the education areas people need to get and I think that is a positive.” CIWD is a local partnership that brings together employers and workers, public and private funding streams and relevant partners to create and implement pathways to career advancement and employment. The No. 1 goal of CIWD is to close the skills gap and meet the needs of employers by helping them to recruit and hire qualified workers for jobs in central Iowa. At the same time, it strives to address the needs of job

Student’s artwork on display at Beard Center By Justin Jagler Newton Daily News Monday’s Newton Community School Board of Education meeting was focused mainly on business, but there was time before the agenda to shed light on a young artist. Newton High School student JiaHao Zheng was recognized for his 3-D artwork, which is displayed at the EJH Beard Administration Center in the lobby. Zheng is a senior in his first year at NHS. He enrolled in a 3-D art class taught by Ruth DenHartog this fall, and it became immediately clear that the senior was bursting with creativity. “The first project we had, he asked me if he
