VA office offering book as tribute to Korean War veterans By Ty Rushing Daily News Staff Writer While some people refer to the Korean War as “The Forgotten War,” the nation that would emerge as the Republic of Korea, better known as South Korea, will never forget the sacrifices made by American troops in its fight for freedom. To commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Military
Armistice Agreement, the U.S. and South Korean governments teamed up to create a photo book, “Korea Reborn: A Grateful Nation Honors War Veterans for 60 Years of Growth.” “This precious book was published with the support of the Korean government, people, and business community and expresses our appreciation to the countries that come to our aid during the War,” South
Korea President Park Geun-hye wrote in the book’s forward. “I hope this book

is passed on to further generations as a book of history that honors the noble sacrifice of the veterans and reminds them of the value of freedom and democracy,” she continued. This book is available free of charge at the Jasper County Veteran’s Affairs Office, located at 115 N. Second Ave. There are close to 100 copies on hand and for the moment, they are reserved for Korean War-
era veterans. Copies will become available for citizens at a future date. There are more than 100 pages of content in the book and numerous photos detailing everything from the war itself to the country’s transition from being one of the poorest nations in the world before the war to the global power it has become. More awards were handed out Thursday during the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas party and business awards ceremony The Curb Appeal Award is awarded to a business known for keeping a clean and tidy appearance. The winner of the award was Newton Manufacturing. “They’re right on First Avenue, and if its not looking good, you’re going to know it, but it always looks great,” Newton Chamber Executive Director Darrell Sarmento said. “It’s a beautiful old building, and their crew does a great job keeping it up.” Newton Manufacturing also received recognition for its support for Chamber events and other businesses. “For the Chamber breakfasts that they hold, they truly throw out the red carpet,” Sarmento said “They not only keep their spot looking great, but they help make our community look great, as they helped the community
with doing the mural at Capitol II Theatre.” In the Non-Profit Award category, the second runner-up was the United Way of Jasper County. The first runner-up was RSVP of Jasper County, and the winner of the Non-Profit Award was Progress Industries. “They’re a longtime organization in Newton we’re proud to have,” Sarmento said “They do so much for the people who are developmentally challenged and emotionally challenged, creating opportunities for people.” The Social Media Award was recognized as one of the toughest awards to decide on, as more businesses are getting involved in more social media concepts other than Facebook. The only single award winner was the Daily News as second runner-up. “It was tough to pick, but we picked some that highlighted some great opportunities that helped Newton connect and get people working together — not just saying things about their
Those who may have been thinking about making a donation, either monetarily or as an in-kind donation, now have a little more time to give it some thought. The Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce has extended the deadline for pledges and letters of support to Wednesday. The Main Street program is about $7,545 away from its stated goal of $80,000 that it will need ahead of its application submission deadline of Friday. To make a pledge, visit the Chamber office on the south side of the downtown courthouse square. Just this week, the State Historic Preservation Office sent a letter of support for Newton’s application to Main Street Iowa. The letter reflects the efforts made by the Newton Historic Preservation Commission in its efforts to have the Newton Downtown Historic Area added to the National Register of Historic Places, which has been useful in the community’s Main Street program efforts.
