Des Moines woman, 13-year-old killed in I-80 rollover

By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Newton Community School District reconfiguration for the 2016-17 school year took another step forward Tuesday night — and dozens of community members were directly involved. Seven groups of about seven people each were able to draw on maps of the school district, supplied by consulting firm RSP & Associates, to suggest boundaries and guidelines for the four elementary schools the district will have next year. The maps were supplied as part of a public input forum, held in the Berg Middle School cafeteria. Led by Rob Schwarz and

A Newton man is charged with attempted murder after allegedly assaulting a female victim with a hammer. Jasper County Sheriff ’s Stone deputies were called to a residence in the 2800 block of West Highway F48 at 10:30 p.m. Monday night regarding a domestic disturbance. There, they determined Abraham Stone, 33, of Newton, had struck a female victim with a hammer

and choked her. The victim suffered only minor injuries. Stone was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail, where he is being held on a $50,000 bond. In addition to the attempted murder charge, which is a Class B felony, Stone was also charged with going armed with intent, a Class D felony, and domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor. The sheriff ’s office did not release any other information, including the age of the victim.

Dave Stoakes of RSP, which is based in Kansas, the teams were able to suggest the boundaries for the Thomas Jefferson, Emerson Hough, Aurora Heights and Woodrow Wilson K-4

Downtown business owner wants Thunder Nites moved By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Downtown business owner and recently elected city council member Jeremy Biondi requested Thunder Nites bike night move from its current location in downtown during Monday’s council meeting. Biondi, owner of Moo’s BBQ, explained to the council the loss he is taking both in sales and from clean up during the monthly event. “During the past few years, as a business owner on the square, business on bike night has been five to 25 percent

lower than normal Friday nights. I have spent additional money on repairs due to the influx on non-paying bike night customers,” Biondi said. He also said within the last year, three intoxicated people have vomited inside of his business. “That takes me an average of four to six hours to clean up that smell. I have to bleach everything,” Biondi said. Biondi said he is not alone in feeling the event should relocate, saying he has spoken to other business owners on the square who have much greater losses than

what his business has. He suggested moving the event west to the DMACC parking lot as an alternative. “I feel bike night is great for Newton but the square is not the place to have it,” Biondi said. Biondi said this issue alone was not a motivating factor for him to run for council. He said he knows a lot of the small business owners have frustration with what is happening in the first ward district. As for his timing, Biondi said he wanted to bring it to the council before he was a sitting member and to give
