NHS students protest bigotry Seek respect, understanding By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News The objectives of a small group of Newton High School students who gathered for a brief protest Tuesday were simple enough: Replace hate and hate speech with respect and understanding. None of the signs the students carried in their hour-long protest on a street corner near NHS mentioned the U.S. presidency or president-elect Donald Trump, or protests in other U.S. cities. The focus of their signs — and the slogans yelled to passing traffic — was

Authorities are asking the public’s help in identifying a man who robbed a Newton convenience store at gunpoint early Wednesday morning. The suspect displayed what appeared to be a semi-automatic pistol at store employees and demanded money at New Star, 702 First Ave. E., just before 1 a.m., according to Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess.
The suspect fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money by the time officers arrived. He’s described as a 6-foot 1-inch tall white man, with long dark hair. He was wearing dark clothing with a hooded jacket. The suspect fled north on foot before getting into a white, older model four-door car
which traveled north from the 100 block of East Seventh Street North. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Newton Police Department at 641-791-0850. More information will be released as the investigation continues. The suspect faces a first-degree robbery charge, a Class B felony. on peace, eliminating hate and respecting one another. “Trump simply revealed another side to an old problem,” NHS senior Megan Shores said. “Now, it’s time to deal with some real issues and promote the values that were taught to us, which includes acceptance of others.” NHS Principal Bill Peters said several students came up to him or other faculty ahead of time and announced they’d be participating in a peaceful protest, initially described as a “walkout.” He said the students who missed class for the hour of the protest could potentially PROTEST | 3A
Wellness Coalition receives $2,000 for snack program By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The Newton Wellness Coalition is once again furthering its efforts to provide healthy snacks to children in the Newton Community School District. The coalition recently accepted an additional $2,000 grant from Farm Credit Services of America to build on the already successful healthy snack closet program. The program, which initially started as a way to provide healthy snacks for kindergartners, transformed to include all elementary
aged-children following discussions with teachers in the school district about the needs children have shown. The group also found teachers have even gone as far as purchasing snacks for their classroom when they noticed the children losing focus, in part because of hunger and lack of energy. It received its first funds through a grant from the citywide parent teacher association for $2,000. Additional funds were also raised by Coalition Member Alayna Bailey through WELLNESS | 3A
New assessment costs, duration might not be so ‘balanced’ Superintendent passes along concerns about costs, time By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News After postponements and several years of back-and-forth discussion involving Gov. Terry Branstad and many Iowa educators, it looks like the Iowa Assessments will finally be replaced by the Smarter Balanced battery of tests beginning in the 201718 school year. Superintendent Bob Callaghan used part of Monday’s Newton Community School District
Board of Education meeting on Monday to inform the board about some of the challenges students and teachers will face in implementing the new statewide system. “This will be an extreme stressor going into 2017-18,” Callaghan said. “About 15 states are already using it. The state (Department of Education) has determined this is the route to go. It’s going to stress everyone, partly because it seems much of the material
won’t be unpacked until July 1.” Students in grades 3 through 11 will take Iowa Assessments in the spring of 2017, as they have for years. Beginning in the spring of 2018, students will take English and math assessments, with students in the fifth, eighth and 11th grades also taking a science assessment. One of the major changes will be the amount of time students spend on testing, Callaghan said. While the current math and reading Iowa Assessments take about 45 minutes each, the online Smart-
