Three people were arrested for the armed robbery that occurred at a Newton Casey’s General Store Wednesday after a multi-county investigation led by the Newton Police Department. Gabriel Lee Crandall, 16, Matthew Shawn Victor Bridges, 24, and Taylor Danielle Helton, 17, all of Eldora, were arrested Friday for the robbery at 1200 W. 18th St. S. in Newton. The three were charged with first degree robbery, a Class B felony. The trio was located near the Eldora area. Crandall was identified as the gunman who entered the convenience store at gunpoint Wednesday night and left with an undisclosed amount of money. Bridges and Helton were seen in the area on a surveillance camera from a neighboring business and were wanted for questioning.
After the investigation spread outside of Jasper County, Bridges and Helton were identified through the camera footage and found to be co-conspirators in the planning effort of the robbery. Following the robbery, the Newton Police canvassed the area and notified residents in the area via the wireless emergency notification system. The department also used social media to help identify the two suspects from the surveillance camera. Newton Police Chief Rob Burdess said he would like to thank the many community members and witnesses who provided tips and information that assisted in the investigation. Crandall, Bridges and Helton were all taken to the Jasper County Jail where they are each being held on $25,000 bond.
