Auditor’s Office. “I have to thank all of the supporters, those that went to the polls this evening or cast an absentee ballot. Also, those who were gracious enough to allow me to display a sign in their yard,” Hansen said. “Thanks to my family and friends for all of their support during this election cycle and those who wrote letters of support to the Newton Daily News.” Hansen has served as Newton’s mayor since 2012 when he was appointed after former mayor Chaz Allen stepped down to take a position at the Jasper County Economic Development Corporation. Hansen was then elected to the position two years ago. “I am very pleased to be able to work on behalf of the citizens of this community, our stakeholders and city staff for the betterment of our

community over the next two years,” Hansen said. Berndt said he decided to challenge Hansen because he wanted to become more active in local politics. “I’m not disappointed for this being the first time ever running for anything. I am very proud of the city for the huge turn out for voting that occurred,” Berndt said. “I want to congratulate Mayor Hansen on the victory and hope that he stays true to what he said during the campaign and continue to move the city forward.” Also elected Tuesday were Craig Trotter, Miranda Kulis and Jeremy Biondi to the Newton City Council. Trotter was re-elected to his second term serving the third ward. He received 263 votes. ELECTION | 3A

List of Veterans Day benefits includes food, other perks By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News In addition to formal Veterans Day ceremonies, there are usually many Iowa businesses that offer discounts or free products or services to active duty military or veterans. Jasper County Veterans Affairs Director Chris Chartier recently sent out information about a variety of businesses that are acknowledging Veterans Day — which is Nov. 11 — in this way. Most businesses or organizations offering these products or services will re-

quire some form of military ID or other proof of military service. This might include a military ID card, a VA ID card, a current leave and earnings statement, a driver’s license with a special veterans designation, a veterans organization ID card (such as the American Legion, AMVETS or VFW), DD Form 214 or discharge paperwork. Wearing a uniform in public — if that branch of the service permits it — might suffice as proof of service. In some cases, a photograph of VETERANS | 3A

Charges dismissed against Newton woman in adult abuse case By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News A case has been dismissed against a Newton woman accused of abusing an adult woman in her care. Jacki L. Owens, 33, was charged with dependent adult abuse after a resident of Newton Health Care Center complained she was abused during the night. Charges were dismissed due to lack of evidence in the case, according to a motion by assistant county attorney Jonathan Noble. Owens was working as a CNA at the center last August when police say she

shoved the victim into a bed rail and grabbed her arm and leg. The victim sustained bruises on the evening of Aug. 27 and into Aug. 28. 2014, according to a police report. Newton police charged Owens on March 3. The victim also complained she was propped up on her side and left in that position, which is painful to her due to a history of fractures. The victim said she did not say anything that night because she was afraid Owens would come back, according to the report. Owens denied being OWENS | 3A

Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News New flooring for the dispatch room at the Jasper County Jail was approved by the Jasper County Board of Supervisors at its regular Tuesday meeting. Pictured is Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty.

New flooring approved for jail By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News New tile flooring was approved for the dispatch room at the Jasper County Jail on Tuesday. The Jasper County Board of Supervisors decided to move forward with a bid from The Floor Store in Newton at a price of $4,672. “The dispatch room was not supposed to have carpet. One of the issues we’re having is it is one of those rooms that there is always something going on. When you try to clean the room when it is carpet you can’t have the noise because they always have calls coming in 24/7,” maintenance director Adam Sparks said. Luxury floor tile, the flooring selected, comes in sections four feet long and six inches wide. The long-lasting flooring will

makes us a little money, a little revenue for the county. We are doing compliance checks and they pay us $50 per compliance check. It’s good, too, that we do a training program if there is a violation of one of the vendors, we can schedule training for them so that they can get their employees trained on how to properly sell tobacco products.” Halferty said that the sheriff ’s office started the program in the late 1990s under previous sheriff Mike Balmer. In other business: • Jerry Nelson was appointed to the Veterans Affairs Commission. • Herb Scott was appointed to the Zoning Board of Adjustment. Contact Jamee A. replace the commercial carpeting that was installed in error. “It’s about as indestructible of a floor as you can get,” Sparks said. “The cleaning is going to be very minimal, it’s something we can go in and sweep instead of having to go in a vacuum. It’s just going to be longer lasting, easier to clean, easier to do everything with that we need to do.” Also approved was the continued contract with Iowa Alcoholic Beverage Division for the I-Pledge program. The I-Pledge program is a partnership between the ABD and local law enforcement to perform compliance checks by local retailers. “This is the annual tobacco compliance check for the retailers in the county, not just within the city of Newton,” Halferty said. “The benefit to us is it
