FRK to take designs to ‘user groups’ By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News One of the largest-scale projects the Newton Community School District has ever attempted cleared a procedural hurdle Tuesday. At a specially scheduled meeting, the NCSD Board of

Education unanimously approved a schematic design of the new Berg Meddle School Complex from Dave Briden and Rachelle Hines of FRK Architects & Engineers. The approval gives FRK Design the green light for design development of specific spaces within Berg, with groups of

one to three Newton school staff participating in “user groups” to advise the firm. The schematic design is a general drawing of the layout of the new middle school, which was approved in a Sept. 13 bond-issue election by district voters. Superintendent Bob Callaghan said the sche-

What do Arnold Palmer, John Mellencamp, Hayden Fry, Cyndi Lauper, Big Bird, Wade Boggs and Carrie Fisher all have in common? The auction will be in its second year raising funds for the United Way, and features hundreds of signed items and unique experiences to be auctioned off in live and silent auctions. The event drew nearly 150 people from around Iowa in 2015. “We have a little bit of everything this year from sports icons to people who have shaped history,” Lowe said. “I think the auction features some of the most unique items I’ve been able to collect so far.” AUCTION | 8A

Two weeks after the recent vandalism of Dakota Access Pipeline equipment, no arrests have been made and the case is still under investigation, Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty said. Dakota Access and Precision Pipeline have been offering a $100,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The sheriff issued a new press release Tuesday about the reward, encouraging anyone with information to come forward. “There is no new information to give out for the ongoing case that is still under investigation,” Halferty said. The latest incident took place on Oct. 15 near Reasnor causing approximately $2 million in damage to three bulldozer and an excavator. Following the incident, the sheriff ’s office reported the preliminary investigation revealed the cause to likely be arson.
