Barbara Grassley spent much of her hour in Newton on Friday discussing how she thinks Hillary Clinton isn’t qualified to be president. However, another topic that came up as she discussed her husband’s run for a seventh term in Congress was “The Full Grassley,” and how tough it is for senators like Chuck Grassley to get to all of their home states’ counties. About 15 Republicans spent an hour with Barbara Grassley at Newton’s Bridgehouse Coffee, discussing various election topics. She arrived at Newton from

Grinnell, walking through the door shortly after news broke about new information being considered in Hillary Clinton’s classified email investigation, so that became a major topic in the discussion. Grassley, (R-New Hartford), 83, who has served as one of Iowa’s senators since he was first elected in 1980, has also been married to Barbara for 62 years. He’s the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and holds other roles in the Senate, but Barbara said he always tries to get out to all 99 counties in Iowa each year. Jon Dunwell, of Newton, asked Barbara Grassley about the decline in camaraderie in Washington, and how members of Congress spend so much time fundraising and attending functions, there GRASSLEY | 3A

Dealership opened this month By Kayla Langmaid Newton Daily News Lauterbach Buick GMC opened its newly polished dealership this month on First Avenue East. After nearly two years of planning, construction and preparation, the seven-acre lot sits on the edge of town at 2900 First Ave. E. with more inventory and a lot more space. Owner Jason Lauterbach said the plan for the updated facility was nailed down in June 2015, and demolition started January 2016. Lauterbach said the main reason for the extensive upgrade was to bring the dealership up to specs with General

Newton inmate dies of natural causes By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News Iowa prison officials say an inmate at the Newton Correctional Facility has died of natural causes. Ernest M. Christensen, 66, was found unresponsive at 11 a.m. Thursday and was later pronounced dead. After Christensen was found, health service and security staff responded and used emergency medical protocols but were unable to revive him. An autopsy report showed he died of natural causes due to coronary artery disease. Christensen was serving a 10 year sentence for third-degree sex abuse in Osceola County. He had been at the facility since July 2013. Contact Jamee A. Pierson at 641-792-3121 ext. 6534 or jpierson@newtondailynews.com

the dealership’s body shop but is set to move to the new location as soon as possible. “The plan is to sell the old building to someone,” Lauterbach said. “We’ve had a lot of interested parties walk through.” LAUTERBACH | 3A

Trail of Terror fundraiser a scream By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News BAXTER — Deep in the woods, far off of the beaten path, screams of terror could be heard for hours on end near Baxter Friday. Local residents need not worry, though, because it was all for a good cause and a good time. to turn an everyday walking trail into a fright filled good time, perfect for the Halloween season. “It is a walking

county trail that people use everyday but it has witches, chainsaw, Bigfoot, zombies, there is a little bit of everything,” Smith said. To get to the trail, participants must first drive to rural Jasper County, past an old country church with neighboring cemetery and down a winding path surrounded by timber. After a brief walk in the dark the site comes into view, complete with scary music and backlit ghosts. Prior to heading onto the trail, people are given a flashlight and walk through a TERROR | 3A
