New pediatrician joins Skiff Medical Center By Jamee A. Pierson Daily News Staff Writer

Jamee A. Pierson/Daily News Volunteers work to construct a ramp at Camden Brown’s home Saturday. Brown was born with a rare club foot condition and a dislocated hip that has caused him to be in a cast or leg braces most of his life. This marks the third time since he was born that Brown has been wheelchair bound.

Volunteers answer the call for wheelchair bound child By Jamee A. Pierson Daily News Staff Writer Volunteers answered the call from Kid Assist of Newton to help build a wheelchair ramp at the entrance of a wheelchair bound child’s home Saturday. Starting first thing in the morning, several local volunteers built a ramp, including railings, for Camden Brown and his family to use in the coming months. “Kid Assist didn’t have the ramps, this time we didn’t have one available, so I just shared a post and people responded,” said

Melissa Hammer-Strand, president of Kid Assist. Kid Assist is a nonprofit equipment loan program serving children, youth, and adults with disabilities in Jasper County. Brown, who already had surgery on his right hip and foot and is currently in a cast, has an additional surgery planned for the middle of November on his left foot that will put him into a body cast until the beginning of January. He was born with a rare club foot condition as well as a dislocated hip that has caused him to spend most of his life in either a cast or with leg

braces. This is the third time since we was born that he has been in a wheelchair. Kid Assist, which was founded in 1997, is a free service for children and adults with disabilities in Jasper County. For children, it is especially beneficial because they often outgrow their equipment quickly. The equipment can often be very expensive and through Kid Assist, families can trade in used or outgrown items for ones that will better suit their needs. Contact Staff Writer Jamee A. Skiff Medical Center has a new doctor who is filling a much needed p o s i tion. Dr. Jennifer Paisley is the new and only pediatrician at Skiff and is also an internal Paisley medicine doctor. “I really, really liked it (pediatrics) when I did my rotations at Blank Children’s Hospital when I was a student and there was an opportunity to do a combined residency with internal medicine and pediatrics,” Paisley said. “I’m really interested in things like diabetes, thyroid disease and particularly pediatric obesity, that kind of adult diseases are coming down into childhood.” Originally from Grinnell, Paisley went to the University of Iowa for undergraduate and medical school. When looking at the next step in her education, she found an opportunity to combine the areas she was interested in. “I really decided I wanted to do a combined

residency, so I went down to Kansas City for their combined internal medicine and pediatrics residency,” Paisley said. As she was finishing her schooling in Kansas City, she had an idea of where she wanted to go. “When it came time to look and figure out what we wanted to do, we knew we wanted to come back home and there was an opportunity to let me be in my home town and work close to home,” Paisley said. “It was a nice opportunity close to home, and let us be closer to my parents and my family so that our 2-year-old could get to know her grandparents a little bit better.” Paisley will have her outpatient practice at NewCare Health Services in Newton but will be available for consultation or general inpatient care at Skiff. With pediatrics, the age range is generally newborn to age 21 but her internal medicine practice ranges from birth to death. The only thing she said she does not do is deliver babies. When her residency is complete, Paisley will be board certified in both pediatric and internal medicine. A little different than PAISLEY See Page 3A

Supervisors have packed agenda Tuesday By Ty Rushing Daily News Senior Staff Writer After a few slow weeks, business has picked back up for the Jasper County Board of Supervisors, and the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting reflects that. Angie Arthur, a member of the Central Iowa Workforce Development Board, will provide the board with an update on Jasper County’s progress in becoming a Skilled Iowa Community. In August, Jasper County and the City of Newton were only 80 people away from earning the designation,

according to Iowa Workforce Development. The purpose of Skilled Iowa is to solve the lack of middle skill workers available in the workforce. One way of combating this is offering up the free National Career Readiness Assessment test. The test would then give a certification of bronze, silver, gold and platinum which can show potential employers a person’s qualifications for a position. As of August, there were nine Skilled Communities in Iowa. If Newton and Jasper County earn the designation,

the city and county would become two of the largest Skilled Communities in the state. In other business: • Dennis Simon, Jasper County Human Resources director, will present a part-time jailer hiring resolution. He will also present the board with various insurance plans for county employees and elected officials. • Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty will present a resolution to the board for his office to have an equitable sharing agreement with the U.S. Departments of Justice and Treasury.

• Russ Stutt, county engineer, is asking the board to consider a contract with Polk County for construction on a culvert near the Beaver Township in Polk County and the Washington Township in Jasper County. Terms of the contract indicate the cost won’t exceed $43,690.80, and the cost would be split between the counties. Stutt’s other request is for a snow removal contact with the state. Under terms of the deal, the state will reimburse the county for performing snow removal at Rock Creek State

Park from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. • The Young Professionals of Jasper County will ask the board for permission to hold a chili cook-off on the courthouse lawn. If approved, the event would take place on Nov. 28. • The board will vote on whether or not to approve the Jasper County Recorder’s Office monthly report. According to the report, the office collected $16,454.81 in September. Contact Senior Staff Writer Ty Rushing at (641) 792-3121 ext. 6532 or at trushing@newtondaily-
