Classic Newton band reuniting for benefit concert By Ty Rushing Daily News Senior Staff Writer Rock ‘n’ Roll and rollerskates will come together for the “Rock the Rink” benefit concert, 7 p.m., Oct. 25, at the recently reopened West Gate skating facility, 1611 First Ave. W. Proceeds from the concert will go toward three musical scholarships and building a new Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association Hall of Fame Museum, and the man behind the festivities is Newton resident Dennis Farland. “We’ve been doing the ‘Winter Dance Party Music Scholarships’ for 15 years now, and we’ve

given over $50,000 to students going to school for either music education or music performance,” Farland said. Farland is hoping this show is the catalyst for an even bigger central Iowa musical fundraising tour, but for now he’s focused on getting the rink to rock. He’s pulled out all the stops and has got his former band, The Eight Track Bank, to reunite for the event. The band was together for more than 20 years and developed a reputation for quality performances in the

There were few surprises in Thursday’s League of Women Voters’ Candidate Forum at Newton City Hall, as hopefuls seeking election in Iowa Senate District 15, Iowa House districts 41 and 28 stayed on message — answering questions posed by voters on topics ranging from the state of infrastructure improvements, renewable fuels and the future of common core standards. The group will be one of the headliners for the “Rock the Rink” benefit concert, 7 p.m., Oct. 25, at the recently reopened West Gate skating facility, 1611 First Ave. W.

Allen, Bruntz: In the race to fill the seat being vacated by long-time State Senator Dennis Black (D-Newton), the debate between Iowa Sen-

ate District 15 candidates Chaz Allen (D-Newton) and Crystal Bruntz (R-Baxter) stayed centered on the issues. For Bruntz, the forum was an opportunity to define herself and policy positions in contrast of Allen — who has more name recognition from his 10 years serving as mayor of Newton. As he’s done throughout his campaign, Allen emphasized his record as a city government head, touting his role in attracting TPI Composites to Newton following the departure of Maytag. Allen voiced his support for the Wind Production Tax Credit and urged a longer extension from federal lawmakers to give the industry more predictability in order to wean the industry

off subsidies its relied on to stay competitive since the 1990s — a trend that makes many free market Republicans in Iowa uneasy. “We’re unable to create a long-term plan for wind energy because Washington wants to only do one year at a time,” Allen said. “The wind industry has said we can get off of this if you give us a longer term to ensure that we can come up with a plan. We want off of it.” Bruntz echoed the free-market approach, stating that Iowa industries should develop energy products based on market demands. But she did not go as far as stating support for the PTC. DEBATE See Page 3A

National Teen Driver Safety Week begins Sunday Newton Daily News Today’s youth are busier and more engaged than ever. Unfortunately, this also means they have more things to distract them, especially while they are driving.

Iowa’s young drivers travel many miles over local, state, interstate and rural roads. Many of these miles are before and after school as well as late at night, after work or sporting events — in all kinds of

weather. Oct. 19-25 is dedicated to raising awareness and seeking solutions to unnecessary teen deaths on the road. SAFETY See Page 3A
