Pence rallies Trump supporters in Newton

County jail to add part-time positions By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News The staff at the Jasper County Jail will be growing with the addition of three part-time positions. Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty requested the approval of the positions from the Jasper County Board of Supervisors to help to fill an open position and add two for more efficient jail coverage. “The one-on-one time we are spending with inmates is increasing every day,” Halferty said. Currently, the jail has 17 full-time and three part-time staff including

a chief jailer and three shift leaders. The addition will fill an open part-time position and add two part-time positions to help reduce overtime pay and give staffers time off. “I don’t see a need to amend the budget. Any time a staff member takes a day off we have to fill it and we’re at the minimum of three in the jail most of the time,” Halferty said. “We are hoping to lower the cost of overtime, and second part is to allow our longtime staff the time off they deserve.” JAIL | 3A

Newton sewer Dogged Determination rates to increase Newton counselors are By Jamee A. Pierson Newton Daily News For the second year in a row, the city is looking to increase sanitary sewer rates by 5 percent. City council approved the first reading of an ordinance to increase the rates which would net an estimated $130,000 in Water Pollution Control revenue. “I want to commend our water works department for staying on top of this,” councilwoman Evelyn George said. “When talking with other cities, there are some communities in Iowa that are in dire position where they have major improvements they are required to make in their department and they are at a loss in terms of how to fund it. This is very responsible fiscal planning.” For those community members who use less than 200 cubic feet per month, the minimum SEWER | 3A

assisted by comforting eyes and a wet nose By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News As Berg Middle School students file into the grades 5-6 half of their building each morning, some are alert, and some are still sluggishly getting into the day. However, nearly all of them are happy to see one particular face. The students call out “Sawyer!” to the therapy dog that greets them

in the hallway as they come in for the day. Counselor Shelly Fitzgerald’s 18-monthold labradoodle cross-breed isn’t around every minute of every day, but when he’s at school, he’s the most popular thing on campus. Fitzgerald, a

dogs, decided she wanted to get a therapy dog of her own, and ended up taking Sawyer home when he was about 8 weeks old. That happened just as Fitzgerald completed her counseling training, and she interviewed for one of the few guidance positions in the area advertised for the 2015-16 school year — at Grinnell-Newburg High School. She was hired there, and when reconfiguration and a teacher leadership grant created shuffling among Newton staffing, she SAWYER | 10A
